Episode 19 Super League Show

The heat has been on how thd top and the bottom of Super League. The

glorious Midsummer weekend `nd we glorious Midsummer weekend `nd we

have highlights from all seven games. Not fun in the sun for

everybody, but plenty going on. The early birds on internathonal

duty, taking on Catalan. Matt Diskin looks to make a distance as the

Bradford Bulls battle for Stper League survival. And the box from

Brazil. Eight Gartner reveals his roots with the Samba nation. It is

getting quite congested at the top of the Super League table. Jamie

Peacock and Jon Wilkin are right in the middle of it and they are here

to navigate us through the latest ups and downs. It was Wigan that

went into the weekend in first place. Hitting top spot on Wednesday

after winning their game in hand against Widnes. After a couple of

months out injured Josh Charnley scored five and past 100 in his

career on his return to the side as they hammered Widnes and le`pfrog

leads and Saint Helens. At Wakefield it was a different story. Wd'll

pressure on the Wigan line here They are going to be driven forward

once again. Looking to get close to the try line and set up a position

for the home side. Couple of metres on the right`hand side. And he gets

through. And he takes that ball and gives Wakefield the lead. This is

Williams. Matty Smith. This is a good run by Hughes. Bursting into

space and he has got the ball back from 30 metres. It is the rdsponse

Wigan were looking for. What a well timed run by Jack Hughes, fhnding

the and motoring through it. Jack Murphy is clear. He has got support

on the inside. Liam Farrell takes the ball and another great love by

Wigan. And now the cake will commence on the left`hand shde. It

will be collected and put down by Anthony Gilling. What a trelendous

piece of skill by Anthony Gdlling. And he has found space. He lade that

himself. He wrong`footed thd Wigan defence. He has dragged his side

back into it. It was his first try since returning from Salford and

from the restart the Wildcats levelled the score when Richard Owen

raced away to score and it was converted to make it 18 apidce with

a couple of minutes to go bdfore half`time. The Wakefield captain

tried to rubble his way over and gets through one. Going tow`rds the

line anti`has held up. A cotple of metres short and looking very

vulnerable. Over the line. @nd he comes up with a 4`point. Thdy backed

themselves to go in for the try and they have done it. Matty Smhth has

got runners outside him. Thhs is Farrell. He is going to go hn again

and Liam Farrell get his second score. First attack for Wig`n of the

second half. Along the line. A lovely forward by sergeants.

Brilliant by sergeants. That was a brilliant move forward by the

full`back and he has got his side back in front. McShane is qtick and

dummy half. He is lively. Got it out to Tim Smith. Nearly got ovdr. One

tackle left. And the try. And another remarkable twist in this

game. One more score could sink them. They have got to defend out

here. Paul Sykes. Coming back in. Has he got it over? He has. That

could be the one. That could be the one that wins the game for

Wakefield. That was quite some win for Wakefield. They will be very

pleased. The Wigan side had played three games in eight games `nd had

young players in there. I think they have got a strong culture in their

team and players that can slot in here and everywhere. They whll be

pleased and for the coach that is two wins out of two. Tim Smhth is

back after an unhappy spell at Salford. How important has he been

in the past couple of games? I think is crucial. He seems naturally very

comfortable. The Salford move did not quite work out. He is in an

environment where he is thrhving and they get the best out of hil. A lot

of labour evolved around Til Smith. It seems to have gone back to that

pattern. `` a lot of play evolved around. Give credit to Dannx Kirmond

and people like that. The forwards are a real threat. And the love to

Wigan for next year, they h`ve got people laying a good platform for

Tim Smith. What more can thdy do this season to build on that? They

need to get clear of Bradford. They might have two or three mord wins in

the remaining games they have got left and make sure that thex are

definitely in Super League. `` next year. `` in company macro ndxt year.

`` in the Super League next year. They have got a blueprint. The coach

came in at the back end of the year and improve the following sdason.

Can they hang on to Tim Smith? It does seem to work with the rest of

the team and bring the best out of the other players. I am surd they

would like to retain his services. Going forward they need to be

consistent in the season. Not fluctuate in form. And like you said

eight great blueprint for C`stleford to look at. `` a very good

blueprint. I am sure he will be keen to make an impact. They do not want

his best assets to be stripped away. They probably got sick of hhs best

players leaving. For James Webster, the key is the board. And they are

allowing him to keep the pl`yers he has got. You need to retain their

talent over a long period of time. You talk about Wigan having three

games in one week. Shaun Wane, he said the best team won. He lade no

excuses. He is very honest. I think he will take a lot out of the

Wakefield game. I think he had one eye on that game on Friday with

Wigan. You know what Shaun Wane is like. He's emotional guy. In terms

of emotional intelligence I think he is one of the best. He would have

talked about that game for ` couple of weeks. I think it is a whn`win.

He blooded some players. For the big game against Saint Helens. Saint

Helens would return to the top of the table if they could get the

debtor of Castleford. They were hammered 42`0 last week and they

needed to respond. `` get the better of Castleford. Yes, very nice of

you! Both teams started verx well. This was a great one with Tom

Makinson. As a young player on the wing, he has consistently played

well. Castleford had a lot of possession. They took some

opportunities in the first half This was going across to Dixon in

the corner. The telling factor is the missed opportunities. They put

it down after a clean break. That allowed us through the stord warts.

`` through the defence. He did not realise what assets he had brought

until he went back there. Hd is a very good communicator and natural

leader. I think we overlookdd the defensive qualities in turn the

organising the defensive line`out. He is exceptional and fat. Very

experienced. Because of his lack of speed he has to find himself in the

right position. I think we have become obsessed with speed `t times.

Jonny Lomax is a big mess btt it is good to have Paul Owens. Yot talk

about halfbacks and managing the game well and Luke managed ht very

well. Kicking have the right time. And that is what you want from the

halfback. When we played ag`inst yourself and Luke Walsh havd been

playing, he's very organised. We can see Castleford coming back hnto the

game. And this is the first time I have ever seen the play on. A source

of frustration for everybodx. And for the cameraman! This acttally was

a try score. Luke Walsh has been very important. It is what we have

been lacking. You get your key players touching the ball most

playing well. Then you have a good chance. I think it is a better team

when he is playing with his guidance and leadership. They get thd next

10% out of the players, good leaders. I saw that against

yourselves. He brings that experience in the big games. That is

what you get with experiencdd players. Castleford to their credit,

probably to our detriment, we did not defend well have the backend and

they took advantage. How much has the challenge cup taken out of them

and is the semifinal hanging over them? It is hard to say. We have a

bit of expectation. Into thd semifinal. People are looking at

them and saying they are a threat and you prepare differently. Very

much like Huddersfield last year, top of the table. They are preparing

differently this year. They are not to be underestimated, Castldford.

Deservedly in the semifinals. They turn up and take them seriotsly You

have to be defending very wdll. A lot of the tries, they have got that

much passing between them. Latt Diskin took charge of Bradford for

the first time on Friday. Into memory control after France's

Cummings was sacked last wedk. They will make an announcement on Tuesday

and James Lonsdale is a big favourite. Jimmy is just wh`t the

club needs. He is passionatd about the club. He has been under some

good coaches. Tony Smith, Brian Madderson. I think he has h`d the

makings of it for a while. He knows what it means to play for the club

and the traditions it has got antibodies that. A fairly

challenging job. I do not think any coaching job is easy. It is

difficult coaching a professional Rugby League side. And with

interaction with Jimmy I thhnk he would be a fantastic head coach It

rings into focus the structtre. We have had transition and rot`tion of

coaches. Has the pressure of promotion and relegation, wd could

see a fluctuation of coaching and playing talent a lot more. Xou hope

that in the short`term, it does not take over. With the new strtcture.

What did you think about thd sacking of Francis Cummins? It is dhfficult

because he has been loyal to the club and he did the best job

possible. I think he tried to coach the team with what is going on in

the background, it was a very difficult thing to do. At the end of

the day they have made the decision and they will stick with it. For

Jimmy to be successful, thex need to let him know what is going to

happen. If not, Jimmy needs to plan for life in the division below

because I do not think they can stay up unless they get those pohnts

back. He needs to plan for that Bradford against Hull KR on Friday.

Getting closer to crunch tile. They must start winning soon. Thdy needed

point is to get back into the play`offs. Stuart Pyke saw this one.

Scrum start from Rovers. Thdy really have to win this game. They are not

going to stop him. Burns from close range. They have dominated the

Travis Burns and Josh Hodson were particularly influential. They were

the best players by some distance and played particularly well. Travis

Burns, we have picked him ott. Has he grown this year? I love him. I

think he's a great player. So competitive. The tough it gdts the

better he plays. That is wh`t you want. A real leader within that

team. I think that they would take him any day. What does he bring to

the team? Toughness. Aggression Surprisingly for a halfback,

physicality. More so the attributes that he brings to the team, mental

things. Mentally he is very tough. He is a competitor and does not give

up on lost causes. He gets ` last ditch tackle, how many times? It is

these qualities which make him stand out. He has grown as well. He is

much more calm. He came unddr the NRL and struggled. As a leader you

have got to be calm and know when not to blow a gasket and he does not

do that often now. Is that ht for Bradford and they will go down? It

will be difficult. I think ht will be tremendously difficult. H do not

think they have got the squ`d to do it. The players looked jaded. It is

Brazilian mother. `` there `re not many players with an interest left

in football. It comes from ly mum side. She is Brazilian and lived

there for the best part of 40 years. She is like a little, it is a

foundation in the middle of nowhere. And it is like north`east Brazil.

And in the mid`70s she moved up for work and the people she was working

for, she met a naval officer and there was a big shipbuilding

heritage and they moved over to just outside this area and my dad did the

smartest thing and got marrhed to her. It is always good when the

World Cup is coming around. With the Brazilian heritage. My mum `lways

goes a bit nuts. She does not watch too much sport when I'm on tour I'm

used to that. And my little boy he plays with Everton as well. Is Rugby

League well`known in Brazil? Not at all. I do not think, I tried to

explain it and she thought ht was American football! I do not think

they understand it very well. I think there is a little bit of a

drive to get Rugby Union gohng out there. There is something going on

in the Olympics, doing some enquiries, hopefully we will get a

free holiday! Luckily enough they got back in touch. Fingers crossed

something might come of it `nd it will be really good to reprdsent

Brazil. My mum would be really proud. They are going wide. Going

all the way will stop ``. It was on the back of a couple of tough

defeats and some good results either side of that. It is a club that is

really going places. When I have got the opportunity to come, thdy will

be coming over. I had a bit of time away from the game last year. Coming

back to 2010, I started picking up little niggles. They became quite

big injuries. I wanted to ghve it one last go and see where I could

go. And it held up pretty wdll and I am feeling pretty fresh. Having a

bit of a breakaway from the game, I think about it, getting the hunger

back for it. It is a big thhng. I have enjoyed my rugby again and I

did not want to finish my c`reer on the back a frustrating injury. It is

pretty full on now and I hope I have a couple of years left.

You were chuckling away at his footballing prowess there.

You did well to splice all those clips of him

together doing individual kdep up, you know

to get them all to look that seamlessly like he kept the ball up.

That was really well done. I've played with him all my career.

Jamie Jones`Buchannan and P`ul Aiton were back in the Leeds Rhinos

how did your team mates get on in your absence?

It was a so`so performance. I think we started well.

We're going to see a great try from Kallum Watkins

and then another try through some good interplay from Kevin.

I think Ben Jones`Bishop and then it leads to Danny McGuire scorhng,

who has come back from injury. You got a few numbers back.

Yeah, the values you want within a team are grit

and honesty and toughness and Paul Aiton and Jamie Jones Buchanan have

that in bucketloads and that's what we've been missing just recdntly.

But you've got to give Widnes credit.

They're playing their third game in eight days.

You know how tough it is, Jon, and they came back,

after having to defend their own line for the first 10 or 20 minutes.

Yeah, really tough. They had some key players missing as well.

I think they'll be pleased with the performance they put in.

Leads is such a difficult shde to play against and not only that,

So I think what pleased Dennis Betts is the amount of points that

Widnes managed to score in the game and, really, how they competed.

A few tries from kicks and they competed hard.

Yeah, yeah, they are a good side. They played well.

I think Dennis has developed a good culture there.

Personally, I think they're targeting the game against London.

I think they see that as other two points for themselves.

We came out and just played well in the second half.

Kevin Sinclair stepped up and so did Don McGuire.

We took the game away from them in the first 20 minutes

of the second half with some good tries.

An interesting mix you've got in there of youthful new players

coming through alongside the experience. Yeah,

we've got another great young player there in Liam Sutcliffe.

I think he's really putting pressure on Danny McGuire

and Kev in that halfback role. And then we're going to see a great try.

Sometimes I feel blessed whdn the ball gets kicked back and I'm

shuttling back and I can sed Tom or Ryan bringing the ball back.

I see Paul Aiton involved and it's a nice little trifle Danny McGuire.

We're not as good as we'd lhke to be. We're progressing slightly.

I think we did tremendously against Warrington

They played well and we're `iming to combat from that.

There is still a little bit of softness in there.

We've not got the steeliness in defence that we had

early on in the year and we're conceding too manx points.

Tell us about Josh Walters, another new face. He's come from rugby union

and he's just taken to the game like a duck to water.

He scored a try there but last weekend,

he made 37 tackles in 36 minutes. Unbelievable.

One of the things that stands out is his fitness.

and that's such an important thing in rugby league.

He's got genuine speed. Ben Jones`Bishop is no slouch.

He is probably the quickest in our team

and he's not even gained on him absolutely at all there.

I think Widnes have got a few of those within their team.

They've got some good marquee players

It's what counts the most. Ht's what teams work on in pre`season.

Unfortunately, Iestyn Harris and got that.

He's going to have to go aw`y and work on that within the pre`season.

You can still have effort and commitment and cause

and work towards a cause within any defensive structure

and I think that's what Iestyn needs to install, those values.

in the super league games and in the NRL, only 42 points on aver`ge so

it just shows, probably too many points being conceded hn our
