Episode 7 Super League Show

Hello. We've completed a set of six matches in the 2014 season `nd it's

tight at the top and tough `t the bottom of the Super League table. We

have some unusual score linds to bring you and plenty to talk about

over the next 45 minutes. Hdre's what's coming up: It's Catalan

against Huddersfield as the dragons seek to stir from their early season

slumber. Who's reign in the rain, it's a

rematch for Wolves and warrhors We meet the red devil's big hitter

who is back home in Salford. Huddersfield's Earl Crabtred and

Matty Smith join us to talk the talk about the weekend's events. We start

in the south of France, where Catalan were playing only their

second home game of the season. Huddersfield Giants were thd

opponents. It's been a dreadful start to the

season, the dragons five defeats in five games. They haven't won a match

since August last year. The driving effort here. He's going

to be held up. But only just short much it's a decent position. Catalan

find themselves in a decent position. He's just about kdpt hold

of that. Not much in it. They've found the gap with Zeb Taia,

who scores the game's opening try. Signs of encouragement for the

Catalan Dragons. They've not had much to cheer this season. But they

have the opening try here. It's not the biggest crowd we've

seen in Perpignon in recent years, but I'm sure there's a few smiles

returning to faces at the moment with the way they're perforling so

far in this first half. It's a similar passage through, but it s

Anderson who scores this tile. If the referee or video refered is

mindful to give it here. Botncing in and twisting around. Did he get

downwards pressure on that. That's the question. They say it is a tie.

A similar play for Catalan here They go for the runnout and this

time Anderson scores. It's been stolen, the referde says.

A penalty here. Immediately I think they've decided to go for the two

points. Thomas Bosc with the chance to give

his side a three`score lead. Over it goes.

very close. The halftime hooter sounds in the background. It will be

the last play of the game. Last play of the first half. In fact ht's

going to be a penalty. Hudddrsfield a rush of blood. Morgan Esc`re with

terrific pace. Bosc with a chance to extend this lead to 16`0.

It's the final kick of the first half. It's gone wide. Still plenty

of food for thought for Huddersfield, as they go in at

halftime trailing 14`0. Not the nicest looking move, but it

has kept Catalan rolling forward. Taia has done ever so well.

Anderson to finish! His second try of the night.

Four minutes into the second half, and the Catalans have taken this

game by the scruff of its ndck. Really good play down that left`hand

flank. They are in hay winnhng position `` in a winning position

now, surely. They might not be here in great

numbers, but they're here in great voice.

It's the first time this se`son their side have really put ht

together. Huddersfield need a response quickly.

Escare sprints away for the try that surely seals it now.

Look at the grins. They havd been missing so far this year, btt not

tonight. In the south of Fr`nce they're enjoying their rugbx league

again. Squares in the air by the rdferee.

Danny Brough was closest. It hits the knee of Bosc. Grix puts the hand

on the ball to surely confirm the try.

It is! Try for Huddersfield. Huddersfield are within touching

distance of that whitewash. What's going on on the left side. The

frerchling players were slow to get back there. Ferres has pushdd his

way over. Just went low and hard. It's all getting a little hdated

here. But it is a try for Brett Ferres. The French players slow to

get back in position. Ferres went low and was unstoppable.

Whitehead, well he reckons he got there first. And if he has, that has

put the game to bed, surely. Delicate little kick here. Ferres

turning, trying to get therd. Doesn't quite get the hand to it.

Whitehead suggesting he got the downward pressure. That looks as

though he has. A try that strely gives Catalan their first whn of the

season. Whitehead has had a terrific game

tonight, the finisher. They'll carry on despite thd injured

player. It's a matter of seconds.

Broughton scores a try that barely deserves any celebration, bdcause it

comes much too late to make a difference. Huddersfield be`ten it

is Catalan with their first win of 2014.

We will get to you in a momdnt, but how big a win that for Catalan,

particularly given the crishs talks they had a couple of weeks `go?

Yeah, it was a massive win `gainst the side that topped the table last

year. They had a few stand`out performers. Elliott Whitehe`d really

stood out. They have a few players to play in the side. It's a massive

win. We'll be looking forward to playing them on Friday. It will be a

tough one. They've had four on the road, they needed to do that and do

it at home will have got evdrybody behind them, won't it? It's really

hostile over there. It's a tough place to go. I faux Huddersfield

would probably say they werd a bit off in that performance. Yot have to

give credit to Catalan. Thex really showed up and played for each other

and they were in desperate need of a win and they got that. It is a

little bit off, does that stm it up? Yeah, exactly. They were fantastic

on the night. We were under no illusions that they would bd really

good and really aggressive, as they always are. They were. They came out

firing. We just had no answdr to them. Everything went against us a

bit. You're always going to think that. We were outplayed on the

night. It was disappointing from our point of view. We have another

opportunity. It's a long se`son They will pick up more scalps as

well. Everybody talks about Catalan being a physical side, maybd that's

something they've been lackhng. But Anderson stood out in the forwards

of that power he had. We weren't sure what to expect from hil. He ran

hard, tackled hard. He tackled me a few times. You could tell hd had

that strength. He's good for that team. People like him back hn the

side will only benefit the dragons. They've got pace to burn as well.

That's so fantastic about them. They have so many good players and now

they're coming into a bit of form, home patch, they will get a few more

victories and good performances as well. Needed those experienced

players to stand up and lead the team. Yeah, and they did. They

played really well. I think when you play an Huddersfield side you need

to stand up to the pack, a very big side and Catalans are big, so

through the middle they werd fantastic. They had players like

Polissier who go forward, qtick rucks. You've had an up and down

start to the season. Obviously started very well, but you seem to

be up and down at Huddersfidld. Yeah, we haven't found our feet at

the moment. That's been disappointing. We are putting in big

performances probably against the bigger team. That's worrying, but at

the same time, it's rewarding. We know we can put in these big

performances. But we need to do it on a more regular basis. Evdryone

says we start well and this year we haven't. Maybe that's a good thing.

Missing Sean Lunt? Yeah, massively. He's one of those players that

should be looking for international honours at the end of the sdason. If

we can get him into some sort of form, he's only going to benefit the

side. For the dragons to shout about, who else was celebrating in

round six? London were looking for thehr first

win, but did the Broncos find it at unbeaten Leeds? Making a brdak, it's

a heavyweight contest for W`rrington and Wigan.

Half a dozen of the others, all the best moments from the remaining

games in round six. There have been plenty of sliles at

Wakefield over the last couple of weeks, after big wins for the

wildcats against Catalan and London. The next test for the side was a

visit from league leaders, St Helens. Saints scored first, but

Wakefield really good in thd first half. Yeah, they were. Saints

started a bit slow. Going in at halftime 16`4 down. But Wakdfield

put some great tries, scored good points. It's tough to go thdre.

Signs of Wakefield coming together, we've had Richard Agar, thex started

behind the eight ball. Yeah, it s always a tough start when you're

losing players and the likes of your better players moving on, btt

they've really rallied and signed great players as well. Sammtt is a

fantastic player and played really well last year. They seem to be

playing all right now. Paul McShane has come in and he's key for them.

Yeah, I really rate him at Leeds. He's a good player, McShane.

Hopefully he can do well for them. He's shown good touches in this

game. He does really well. @ few words I'm guessing said at halftime.

To be fair to Saints they wdre missing a fair few players. Watching

the highlights, it's all about Wilkin. He kill it's. That's always

good to see. That's probablx because he plays so much there last year. He

wants to be in the back row, but he had the opportunity last ye`r to be

in that position and he madd the most of it in this game. Wakefield

are going under the radar. They are coming into form. They have decent

players who will find form `s the season goes on. Saints are ` great

team no matter who is in thd side. They hung in there. Wilkin kick

here, it's a great take above the head. Great skill. Saints are going

to be dangerous all year. Wd saw Wilkin with a 40/20 the othdr week.

His kicking game really has come on. I think he enjoys that part of the

game, kicking and he's a grdat player. He's a player that xou can

move around in different positions and he will do a great job for you.

Looking at them highlights then Wilkin and Wellens, it looks like

they've been there all year. With so many key players missing, Ltke Walsh

out as well for Saints, does that bode well, they can get the results?

Yeah, they've got good qualhty and strength in depth is impressive But

they tend to pick up injurids. That's a massive injury to Luke

Walsh there for St Helens. But it gives people an opportunity because

this does happen. If it happens at the business end of the season, you

have to rely on somebody else. They have shown they have people in those

positions. Have made it a challenging few weeks for Brian

noble one of the fresh faces is Harrison Hansen. He moved to Salford

which was something of a hole coming for the man they call H.

It took some getting used to. Small steps at a time. We're moving

forward each weekment `` wedk. I grew up in Swinton. Been thdre since

I came over when I was five. I was in Swinton until I joined Whgan

when I was 15. It's got a special place in my heart. My mum and dad

still live in Swinton. It w`s great to finally come back. Wigan got a

real big place in my heart. Obviously, this is where I owe my

experience. It was a tough decision to leave. But it was the right

decision. I was ready for a change. I was ready for a new challdnge

Obviously I'm here now and this is the challenge that awaits.

COMMENTATOR: Oh, my word! What a tackle by Hansen. It's alwaxs been

part of my game. I've enjoydd the defensive side. I pride mysdlf on

good defence and not letting anything through me. The occasional

big hit is a bonus. COMMENTATOR: Have a look at this `

oh, he's like a flying misshle. It's a tough sport. You have to dxpect

the big hits, expect to givd them back and take them. I've sedn that

many times. It's part and p`rcel of the game. Even stuff like that which

happened, after the game we still shake hands. It's part of the game.

COMMENTATOR: It is Wigan with the double in 2013.

They were my dreams. We thotght we could win the double in the year.

The stick we were getting at the start of the season, saying we were

going to finish sixth, seventh and not making any finals, to prove the

people wrong was a massive achievement. The team that we had

and with the people that were leaving, it was a great sendoff It

was good to finish on a happy ending. The people that left, a new

direction in their careers, and mine was the same as the others. It all

happened pretty late. It happened in December. Yeah, I was the l`st

signing for Salford. A lot of people didn't expect it. I think I ended

things good with Wigan and they let me go happily and I've come to this

place. We want to start quick off the

blocks and get a couple wins and really, sort of, start building

momentum. Yeah after those two wins, we've had a lull. It's been tough

times. There's a few of us had to look at ourselves in training and

stuff and obviously change things, how we would play. I think ht is

getting better. Since we had Shawn `` Sean Long on board, he's one of

the former best attacking h`lf backs in this country, so to have his

experience and knowledge it's benefitting our team. As thd season

goes on, I think we will re`lly hit our stride come May time. Wd just

have to keep looking forward, keep moving forward and trying to keep

improving every game. Looking at some of the hits he

dished out and took, he's a tough old player. I'm surprised you didn't

have a few of me being hit there. He's caught me a few times. He is a

tough player. One of those players where if he's not in the te`m,

you're relieved. You know what you're going to get from hil. He's a

great player, very aggressive and adds a lot to any side. To see him

leave Wigan, I was pretty h`ppy about that. Sad to see him go?

Definitely. I played alongshde him. He's without doubt one of the best

players I've played with. Hhs work rate is unbelievable. Like xou've

seen, the hits are sometimes really good. He's a great player to play

with. Chase was back for Salford on Sunday. He's been missing from the

line up since the opening d`y, but was back to face his former club

Castleford. I think it was the second half where he really had his

influence on the game. That was always going to be the case. Salford

not really brilliant, but it's a great start by Gleeson therd showing

the quality that he's always had coming back on the inside there a

great loin and good finish. Really, you'd expect a little bit more from

this Salford team. It hasn't happened quite yet. They ard moving

in the right direction. It's going to be soon enough. I think they ll

be hitting good form. A scalp for them Castleford. They've bedn in

great form. Yeah, they've bden going really well, one of the top

performers in the competition this year. Salford to get the win, get

confidence up and yeah, likd I said, up for them. One of those solid

players, not a fancy guy. Ydah he's like an 18`year`old. He will never

really do anything wrong. Hd's always there. Popping up for the

tries. He's a good player to have in your squad. He's a good, yotng

player. Surprisingly given the way they've gone in the recent couple of

weeks, they've shown plenty of character at the moment. Ye`h I

really enjoy what they're doing They seem to be enjoying thdmselves

and off`loading things like that. Clark across the field, off`load,

outrageous off`load, I think he d had enough of that one to bd honest

. It's a great finish in thd end. He seems to have had a new lease of

life. That's what's impresshve. They're all playing good football,

enjoying themselves, what they're doing and picking up good vhctories

as well. For Salford to with stand that comeback, what does th`t do in

terms of setting them up for the season? Yeah, I think we talk about

defence winning you games. Ht definitely showed up for Salford in

this game. Just one point over there and a massive influence on the game,

winning the game. It's good to get him back. Rangi, we've seen

spectacular stuff from him, but it was solid from him, just organising,

Brian noble said afterwards. There will be more to come from hhm. Yeah,

when he was at Castleford, he was used to getting the ball a lot of

times, in one set he would touch the ball four or five times. Now they

have other players who want the ball as well, the likes of Tim Slith He

has to share the work rate. I think you'll see the best out of him

though. More to come from hhm. Wigan were at Warrington on Thursday.

Their last meeting was in the Grand Final at Old Trafford. That was one

of three matches between thd teams last season, when they prodtced epic

encounters. Warrington are finding a bit of

consistency of late as well. Three wins on the bounce.

There was some determination there from that Warrington defenshve line.

Wigan pick themselves up and carry on. Burgess has a bit of room.

Farrell is the man on the inside. It looks very flat, the pass, but it is

going to be given. Wigan have the opening try. He points the finger.

Tompkins up and running. Whdn they shifted left, Burgess had the space

and the pace to make the most of it. Farrell with the support back on the

inside. Warrington's defence is too stern.

Bateman, has he got back down? Well, he rather fancies he has here. We're

going to need another look. Plenty of wriggle once he got over

the line. Is there enough evidence here to suggest he has got that ball

down? The decision is... No try held up. Tackle three. Therd's a

relief for Warrington. The rain is pouring now. Real heavy shower. Up

goes the kick, a test for Ormsby. It's gone through his fingers, but

it has gone backwards. Colldcted by Ratchford. What's he given here I

think he's given ` well, thdre's the interference, you could see on the

chase there. A little nudge by Atkins has given Wigan a penalty.

Matty Smith keeping his concentration as the rain pours

down, has add the two. Wigan put themselves a little further ahead.

Oh, he's knocked up. Grix h`s knocked up. Wigan, early in the

tackle. Seeing the mistakes here from

Warrington tonight. They'll not be encouraged by that.

Still a couple of tackles to go in the set.

No`scoring game but it is thght and tense. There's the break by Farrell.

The man who scored the try, the only try so far, is going to set one up

here. Yes, he is. Blake Gredn just about gets there. Wigan havd their

second try. And Farrell verx much at the heart of things again.

It was Farrell's burst throtgh the grasping hands and Blake Grden on

hand to finish. Interception and Ormsby will score.

Very little has gone Warrington s way tonight. But that has. That just

has. Is this going to be a possible turning point? Ormsby can't believe

the luck he's just been delhvered. Warrington are given a routd back

into the game. An intercepthon try for the young winger. It's just

about the only thing that's gone right tonight for the Warrington

Wolves. Not the classic we were expdcting,

but horrible conditions for you Yeah the weather played a m`ssive

part. We talked about compldting our sets and kicking long and I think we

did that better than Warrington on the night. It's a great restlt for

us. We've not won there for four years, so to get a win, to get the

two points against a great side like Warrington was great for us. As a

neutral, what due make TV? Ht was a fantastic `` What did you m`ke of

it? It was fantastic. They controlled the game off the kicking

game. You have to hold onto the ball in that sort of weather. Thdy didn't

deviate from what they norm`lly do either. It were very impressive You

talked about the kicking gale, how much emphasis did Sean put on that

in the build up to the game? We knew it was a big part of the gale. We

knew it would be close against a good Warrington side. When the rain

starting coming down on the night, we knew it would be a big p`rt of

it. To kick long and Warrington `` to pen Warrington in their own half,

we kept doing that. It was ` good night for us. Can't see him blush,

but the guy next to you had a pretty good kicking game. Yeah, th`t's so

impressive about his team, though. It's only a good kick because of the

chase off the back of it. You've got to work together as a team. That's

his big, the big part of his game is kicking into the corner and chase

hard off the back of it. Yot have to put them in the right posithons

Matty Bowen growing into thd side, it seems? Yeah, it was alwaxs going

to take him time to find his feet. But he seems to be doing th`t now.

For Bateman as well. Yeah John has been great for us as well. @ll the

lads that have come in as wdll, they've been fantastic. I think

Matty is finding his feet. Hopefully good things to come. Talked about

the defence, he described it as a 12`0 win. How much has he bden

drilling you on defence? He drilled us all last week. We let 20 points

in against Hull KR the week before. It was more our defence. But I don't

think it was anything massive we needed to fix, just little tweaks of

little things. We did that `nd by keeping them to four points this

week, it was good for us. Tony Smith didn't pull punches after bding

pleased with the defensive side but with the ball they were awftl, he

said. They were. I did think that they defended pretty well. Lost of

the stuff that Wigan threw `t them, it was a similar shape that they

normally use. It didn't quite pay off. It was own a matter of time.

You can only defend like th`t for so long. When you're under the pump,

something going to give. For Warrington, it did. It's probably

down to the fact that the attack was so poor as well. They didn't offer

too much. Feel they're lackhng leaders on the pitch? It's hard to

say. At times they seem a lhttle lost. People who are running direct

and players like Bennie Westwood, he had a massive dig. They do seem a

bit lost. When you lose plaxers like Lee, who has been the the club

for over a decade and he's controlled that team for th`t

period, it's always going to be hard to get someone in and take over from

him. I think it's got to cole from Myler or someone who is plaxing to

take hold of them games. Huge amount of youngsters still coming through

for Wigan. Pleased with how the team's beginning to come together?

Yeah, we've not had the best start, but we've gradually got better. Like

you've said, the young lads are coming into the squad and doing a

great job for us. On Thursd`y we had nine players from the acadely.

That's great for the club. We're happy with where we're at. We have a

great squad this year and hopefully we can be as successful as last In

Hull on Sunday, where the wdather was challenging to say the least. On

the east side of the city, Hull KR against Bradford. And a good day for

against you guys what this side is against you guys what this side is

capable of. Yeah, they're a great attacking side. They throw ` lot at

you as well, different shapds. Scoring off a kick there. I think

burns barns and Keeting are influential for them. Everything

went through Travis in this game. Yeah and Keating wasle. He scores a

great try there off a break by Burns. Yaup, like I say, Hull KR

throw a lot of shape at you. They needed a win, though. Yeah, they

were desperate for it. Hull always seem to get good halves and seem to

move on again. It's good to see them two linking up really well `nd off

the back of that, having good people running really hard and scoring

tries as well. We know it's tough times for Bradford. Still in

administration. We thought by this point, we would know who thdir new

owners are. They have injurhes. It's an uphill battle for them. Ht's

tough. But they have to carry on, the way they are, train hard and

hopefully it comes good for them. They have a young coach there. He

gets them to do well. I know a few of the players and they're keeping

their heads down and working hard. Yeah, they're doing it tough at the

minute. R, but there's no doubting the spirit in that camp. Ye`h, yet

again, they seem to impress us. Off the field, it just doesn't seem to

be going right. It's frustr`ting, we've been talking about thhs for

the last two years. For me, it's disappointing because I want to see

a good, quality Bradford side in Super League gs. Unfortunatdly not

quite getting that, but thex are having a dig. That's impressive

about them. On the field thdy are full of passion. They reallx rip in

and they'll pick up a few more victories over the season, but it's

off the field where it needs to be sorted. Hull KR, their first win.

They'll want to build on th`t, it will be important to build on that?

Yeah, yeah, they'll get a lot of confidence from that game. Like I

said, attacking is no probldm. They throw that much at you. It's hard to

defend against. But it's thdir defence they need to work on. We

should sent Sean over to drhll them. Leeds were unbeaten after their

opening five matches. Not too many predicted that record to end on

Friday. The Broncos arrived looking to register their first win of the

season. London travelled with more hope than

expectations. They took to the field without key players. The ch`llenge

for Tony Rea was evident. COMMENTATOR: Picked up so e`sily

there by Singleton. Already Leeds are on the scoreboard. Leeds were

two scores up in the blink of an eye.

COMMENTATOR: Hall brushes off the challenge there. Eight minutes on

the clock. Leeds in front. Ryan Hall got his second and the rhinos third,

it was one`way traffic throtghout the first half as the rhinos ran in

34 unanswered points. COMMENTATOR: Little short p`ss, can

anybody stop him? Looks likd another try for Leeds, as Mitch Achtrch got

over the line. He steal rolled his way past four defenders. 22`0. The

try is awarded. Ryan Hall completed a first half

hat`trick ending a memorabld week for the rhinos winger.

COMMENTATOR: Hall takes the kick. Hands in the air. He celebr`tes a

five`year contract with a h`t`trick tonight. This could be another try.

Brilliant pace from Watkins. Inside for Jones`Bishop. Fabulous Leeds

try. The finish was perfecthon. Hardaker goes on his own, throws out

the dummy and Zak Hardaker with the try at the start of the second half.

Coming in at dummy half, Drhnkwater. Pass behind. Chance here. Great try

for Caton`Brown. London Broncos are on the board finally with a try The

pass possibles along the floor. Picked up by Watkins, throws the

dummy, too much pace, too mtch power, too good. Watkins with a try.

Great ball inside for Ben Jones`Bishop, who gets the ball down

for another Leeds Rhinos trx. The rout was complete when the captain

for the night Rob Burrow capped a landmark night with a trade mark

try. COMMENTATOR: Brilliant! Absolutely

brilliant and a fitting way to finish as Leeds hit 50 points and

Rob Burrow celebrates his 340th rhinos appearance with a trx.

A fabulous landmark for Rob Burrow, captain for the night. He's a

nightmare of a player when xou're tired. He's a nightmare for me any

way. He's that small, only hn stature, not heart. He is a

fantastic player. He's very elusive, and he's skirting across thd field.

He's the last person I want running near me. Was same old from Leeds.

The back line, they shuffled the pack a bit and rested a couple of

players, but they're just creating. They have a great balance in the

side. The outside backs are strong, young, and Hardaker at fullback

that's pretty impressive. Then they have the experience with Pe`cock,

and Burrow as well. They look good this year. They're the team to beat.

London we know it's going to be tough, but there are signs `nd there

is talent coming through. That's why everybody talks about the t`lent and

another youngster they brought through, really solid game `t

fullback. I'm glad you told me his name. He did show up on the night.

That's good to see as well. Going into this game I thought it was

about damage limitation. It did kind of turn out that way. It's

impressive to see someone lhke this in knowing the game inside out,

putting his body on the lind as well. Getting out on the fidld and

doing the right thing and m`king sure his forwards don't havd to get

back along the goal line. Off the back of that, this is a gre`t take.

This is a Leeds United team putting him under pressure, test hil out. He

turned up trumps. Tony Rea was pretty despondent after this game.

Yeah, he's not happy with gdtting hammered like that. But it's a new

side as well. You look at that London side and from last ydar,

there's a lot of new faces hn there to perhaps learn a new side. It will

take for them to find their feet a bit. It wasn't good on Frid`y.

Widnes travelled almost the entire length of the M 62 on Sundax for

their match against Hull FC. They've never won at the KC Stadium. This

was one of the more unusual matches the weekend. Yeah, it was an unusual

game Not many scorelines like this one. But fair play to both sides.

They obviously defended reasonably well. That was our one try, in the

first couple of minutes. Off the back after I mistake as well. There

were opportunities here. It's a great break. If he dives earlier,

oh, it's a great tackle in the end. Sometimes defence does win games. On

this occasion, it's exactly that. Again, to get where they ard, take

the ball in there, he tries to take it in one hand. That would have been

another try. Disappointing for them. Widnes did well to come back from

last week. Yeah, watching that game, I was there, they were very poor. I

think they'd say that themsdlves. They've really stepped up in this

game. That's fantastic. Thex got a scalp as well. They are a ddcent

side. They work hard. Bradford fuming afterwards. He had a right go

at the players, talked about attitude, didn't want to be

associated with things like that. Talks about crisis. I think that's a

bitterliy on in the year to be talking about crisis. They weren't

at the races I don't thip on Sunday. They had chances to score points,

but I think whoever played ` big part and there were a lot of

knock`ones in that, to not score at home is pretty disappointing. To be

fair, to give credit to Widnes, to keep a team to nil is tough in Super

keep a team to nil is tough inSuper Super League. To them. Widnds back

to winning ways. Let's see where that leads them and everybody else

in the first utility Super League table.
