Hello there.

The first of the big finals is just days away, but before

hitting the road to Wembley, we have a detour around the latest

matches in the qualifiers and the Super League.

Here's what's coming up...

Paul Cook and Luke Robinson know what it takes

to make the finals.

They're here to run the rule over the top two

tiers in the Super Eights.

So it's a big week for Hull FC, who head to

Wembley on Saturday.

Before that they had a chance to confirm their

place in the super league semifinals.

They would do that if they could beat Catalan on Friday.

Watching on was Dave Woods.

because Hull are going to ask a few questions as they sweep it

towards this side.

Big finish from Frank the Tank.

That was really impressive again from Hull FC.

Four times they've played Catalan and they've

beaten them four times.

Not many teams do that.

I think going to France in round two we started to speak about

Hull FC maybe being a team that could go places this season.

They've kicked on from a loss at Widnes.

They've beaten all teams home and away this year.

Catalan four times, as you say.

Many people tipped Catalan to be very good this year.

They've only just started f`ding away from that top four.

They've been in there for a long time.

For Hull to go there and do that was a big statement of

intent heading to Wembley.

Talking about big statements, Luke, consecutive matches they've nilled

their opponent leading up to Wembley.

Regardless of the opposition, that's a massive statement.

Both facets of the game, attack and defence, contribute

to winning games.

But when the team's foundation is around the defence

that goes a long way with winning trophies.

They seem like a team that

are really dedicated to defence at the moment.

That's the defence.

Let's talk about the attack.

I want to ask you how good Mahe Fonua is.

We'll see a couple of examples of some brilliant play.

He's been absolutely integral to everything they've done right.

I think they signed him originally as a winger.

They signed Tuimavave to play the in centre.

I think what Mahe brought the team was a lot of talk on the edge.

Quickly they moved him from the wing to the centre.

Against Hull KR here.

Great feet for a big man.

Outside of Thornley.

And a flicked pass.

Not easy to execute.

Steve Michaels runs away and you see he's got two people interested.

Such a big man with a fleet of foot to go with it as well.

The try he set up for Sneyd is just fantastic, playing from his

right foot, right foot again.

And he has the strength to stay on his feet

and find the off-loading, carrying the ball like it's a tennis ball.

Plenty of tries to be scored off Mahe.

He could be handful for Warrington at Wembley.

They've got players on the other side they've got to watch.

He's a really explosive athlete who likes it and coupled

with his footwork as well, I'd love to hold the ball like a tennis ball.

But I've got baby hands.

He's going to be a danger that Warrington

need to keep an eye out for.

You mentioned Catalan fading a bit.

What do you think has happened?

They've gone.

I think they've gone out the four now.

I'm not sure what's happened.

They'll learn some serious lessons.

In my opinion they brought in the signing of the season

in Glenn Stewart.

He's basically the best player for me in the Super League,

or the best signing.

If they can get a couple more of him over the

line next year and learn sole lessons I think they can go a long

way again.

It seems to be that every ydar they promise and promise and

promise and then they fade `way

Some lessons need to be learned really quickly.

And I'm sure Fraser's trying to get to the bottom of that.

If anyone knows what is wrong he will definitely know.

Let's see more tries because Hull head to

Wembley in great form.

Their opponent in the showphece are Warrington and the Wolves faced

Castleford on Saturday.

Warrington quite difficult to read at the moment.

They're going up against a really talented Castleford side who

have put a lot of wins together in the last few weeks.

They are a difficult side to beat.

Just a different dimension.

When he plays loose forward it's like an extra half back.

Castleford are really dangerous.

32 for the season.

Unbelievable.

I don't think I got that in my career.

More than anything else I just love the fact that Daryl Powell `nd Danny

they seem to get the best out of players,

they know, Luke Gale on

him, they seem to have a gift of making average players good and good

players great.

He has been brilliant since he came back.

They will miss him because he's been really

explosive and he is the fastest

He caused the defence a lot of problems.

They are always good to watch at Castleford.

It is another victory and it becomes a habit.

Them going into this game and having a

closing counter is boding well for Saturday.

Daryl Powell said they are

durable at the moment which is not a word we have

heard about Castleford.

It is always classy Cass.

Class and very skilful.

What they are very good at is finding areas off the field and

finding shapes from it.

A dropped goal.

He misses that one.

And Gale comes in with one on the 79 and a half.

Looks like the winner.

I think everybody thinks the game is all over.

Warrington go short and you get the kick-off in

just a few plays later, it's all the way to the left

and all the way back to the right.

It's a fantastic try, this one.

Lots of skill.

We talk about what enterprise we might see

at Wembley on Saturday.

I think this shows the quality they have got.

Latchford, Clark and Sandel are all touching the ball.

That's what makes them so dangerous.

You've the key personel in the key positions and it

makes a really dangerous side.

A word on that final.

Gareth Ellis will be key for one of yours.

Gareth has been massive for the club since he

came back to the club.

He has had a few injuries.

It's one of the few honours he has missed out on in his career.

He feels like he's running out of time for that.

This is a big game for Gareth Ellis also Liam

Watts is back.

Some big players are back for Wembley.

I interviewed Gareth him some weeks ago and he said, I asked how much he

thinks...

and he would be gutted if he never ever won this.

Predictions from you then.

Warrington or Hull?

As I mentioned earlier I think the 9-7-1, the

formation that pretty much controls the side.

I think Warrington hold the edge.

I know Hull are big and powdrful and they have got good

players, but they might just edge it for me.

I'm on the flip side of that.

I think, listen, like you say, the 1, 7, 6 and 9

of both are both very good.

But maybe they do have the edge but Hull

are big and strong and powerful and they have

a fair amount of skill in

there with Pritchard and Minichiello and Ellis has a fair amount of skill

with Liam Watts.

I think it is made up for them to be Hull's year.

You should probably put all your money

on Warrington with me.

As long as it's a cracker.

One hour's build-up of the match gets started

Super League on Friday.

They are as close to the record books as they

are on the map.

Wigan impressive winners against their local rivals,

St Helens.

They are backed up into second spot.

Your club Wigan have not bedn in great form going into the game,

Saints on a seven match unbeaten run.

That is some way to rediscover your form.

I did not expect that.

Saints have been playing really good stuff but Wigan seem to be

getting players back.

It is amazing the amount of injuries they have had to be in the position

they are and it shows what a threat they are.

Those games are amazing to play and normally brings out the best,

Saints will be heartbroken.

Weren't you the last Wigan hat-trick scorer in one of these?

Someone tweeted me to tell le that I was the last one until Gelling.

What an amazing player he is.

He is big, strong, athletic, he can kick the ball,

he is an enigma.

Shaun Wane will be having heart attacks every time he gets the ball.

I do not think Gelling knows what he will do, never

mind anyone else!

That was the first one, that was the try that

did not deserve scoring, but it was brilliant.

He is an amazing player.

He is skilful, athletic, he has got the lot and a little

bit of pace.

He shows he can run as well.

Sometimes, you do not know what you will get with him.

A word on Saints, will they be scarred by this?

They will be.

The whole club will be scarred, to lose to your nearest and dearest.

It will hurt the team.

They will get a weekend off this weekend along with Wigan whilst

the other two in the top fotr, Hull and Warrington battle it out.

Any slip-ups after Wembley gives both those teams a chance to put

some pressure on Hull and Warrington.

In games like this when there is not really a great deal to play for,

how do you get players up for it?

It is tricky.

When I played with Salford, we came fifth and there

is a goal to make the top six and once you have done that,

the pressure is off.

Bit of a release valve, but as a player you have to go out

there and each and every wedk, you need to give it your best

and put your all in.

From a coaching perspective, it is about building for next year

and putting good performancds in and hopefully that will transfer

to next year.

A quick word on Chris Chestdr, is he planning for next year?

I think so, with the format, and it is important that

Wakefield did that.

Albeit by the skin of their teeth and the deduction for Salford,

but Chris will be planning for next year, looking at a couple of younger

players and seeing who can handle it moving forward for next year.

It is difficult, a difficult situation with Widnes and W`kefield

and Castleford as well.

Widnes are back to winning ways, here is the state

of play after 26 rounds in the First Utility

Super League table.

Confirmation that Hull and Warrington will definitdly

finish in the top four and be involved in the end

of season semi-finals.

Wigan need one more point to join them, St Helens are the clear

favourites to claim the fourth play-off place, they have a 4-point

lead over Catalan.

Things almost sorted in Super League, what

about the qualifiers?

Here is what was on the cards in week three.

The champions of the Championship are Leigh and they were looking

to continue their push for promotion at Featherstone on Sunday.

You are the assistant coach, it is a great start,

a brilliant start.

Probably too good.

We raced into a 12 point le`d within eight minutes and then

we lost a player to a hamstring strain and we had a bit

more to do on the bench, with a few more minutes and then

gradually they got themselves back into the game.

Thankfully for us we got a valuable two points leading into a break

and a much-needed break for our team as well.

That was Josh Walters, Featherstone from Leeds going over,

who have been Leigh's standout players this season?

It has been difficult for me, I came in halfway through the season.

They are littered with lots of big names.

The likes of Gareth Hock have been around, but one player who has

really impressed me has been Adam Hixon on the wing.

He played really well last week against Salford and had

opportunities this week and did not quite take them.

We have built a really strong side and as good a chance as we have

got to gain promotion with the players we have brought in,

Mitch Brown and Matty Dawson and one or two others.

There is that man, doing what he does.

He is one of their own, I al told.

They came back into it, ran out of a little bit of dnergy,

which is concerning for us.

We're running out of energy at the back end of games.

Losing a player so early did not help us in the game against London,

Round 1 of these eights and this round as well, we have got some

way to fix up to gain any kind of promotion,

before we can think about being in Super League.

Three wins out of three, Neal Dukes reckons ten points

would be enough for promotion.

I think ten points will get you promotion, eight points will get

you into the million pound game and possibly six would do it.

Both teams last year who pl`yed the million pound game were on six,

so if we can get to eight, it would be good.

It does not look like that this year.

Another big player wrapping it up there.

Whilst we are going into a weekend off, there is a lot of work to do,

refreshing and recuperating and being ready for what is really

a stiff challenge at Hull KR.

That looks a massive game.

Really set the cat amongst the pigeons beating Salford.

Salford beat us in the first round.

Leigh going and winning makes it exciting.

You're not sure who will get into the top three or

the million pound game.

It is really important, your points difference,

you have to win games and you have to try and concede as little

as you can and score as much as you can.

We will see that with London.

Hull KR went to Salford on Friday, both teams starting to look

a little bit nervous.

Each one won one and lost one in the opening games and defeat

here would leave one of them increasingly vulner`ble

Sharon Shortall has the details on this one.

With both sides having won one since the split, a win would be

valuable and Hull KR had thd best possible start when George scored

after only a few minutes.

Rovers followed that up when James Greenwood touchdowned.

Rovers were 12 points up with this conversion and soon

after the winger extended the lead with a towering penalty effort.

Salford eventually got their first points midway

through the first half.

Robert Louis moved the ball to Mason Caton Brown who performed

acrobatics to get in at the corner.

A further two points from a penalty kept Rovers in command

on a blustery and wet afternoon

And they went on to stretch their lead further before h`lf-time,

a 40-20 kick from Albert Kelly set up the position for Rovers deep

in the Salford half.

From the resulting scrum, they found a gap in the Salford

defence to score almost unopposed from around ten metres out.

Gareth O'Brien did add two points for Salford almost on the half-time

whistle but the deficit was 16 points and Salford had work to do

to get only their first win from the split.

The Red Devils started well after the break,

three tries were ruled out before they capitalised on the pressure,

Gareth O'Brien coming in and converting.

Another penalty edged Rovers further in front again.

And with Albert Kelly's one pointer, the game was slipping out of reach

of Salford and increasing the threat of being involved

in the million pound game.

Hull KR had the final say when Thomas got on the end

of the Kelly grubber.

Rovers moved closer to securing Super League status with a victory

and Salford face Leeds next.

We played them like a play-off game.

I think we knew how big a g`me it was before the game.

Salford are definitely not dead and buried in

this competition.

But we have made one small step closer to what we are

trying to achieve.

We have got to get together and reassess what we are about.

The Super League season has been and

gone and we can see that we held our heads

up in there and we did a

decent job of this in a completely different competition.

-- decent job but this in a completely different compdtition.

We need to accept it.

At the moment we don't seem to be kind of focused about how

serious the situation is and livelihoods and careers are on the

line a little bit.

There's a lot to play for in this competition and

there's going to be more swings and ups and downs.

I'm really pleased for the club and the players but I

understand there is still a huge amount of rugby left.

Two defeats, Luke, Salford, another one of your former clubs.

If we all packed up and went home now, they would be

relegated but that is not the state of play.

Is this trouble with a T?

I think it is for everybody.

It's nervous times.

As Watson said, livelihoods and careers on the line.

With that you don't know if you are going to pay

your mortgage at the end of the

year, it makes players nervous if they start making mistakes.

Leeds next.

They've got to get something there.

Nice and easy.

That's what they are trying to create.

The format dictates it is going to be

testing and we want it to be testing.

We want to compete against a Super League side and you do not

know who is going to come up and who is going to go down.

Whoever holds their nerve and plays the best in the

next couple of weeks will get themselves out of it.

Hull KR have blown a few leads this season.

It was crucial that they didn't this time.

James the Hull KR coach was speaking about the pressure of the game.

I think Salford are playing to be at home in the million pound game.

That's how serious it is.

They're on two points going to the break and

they go to Headingley.

If you're a betting man you would go with Leeds.

I don't think Leeds being as good as they are

and getting as many players as

they are back will lose in these middle eights.

Unless it's Leigh in the last one, they looked

too good and strong and it leans Salford will be left on two points

with only three games remaining.

I know they are all against championship teams but getthng to

eight points might not get xou in the million pound game at all.

Very quick on Rovers, do think they will

be OK?

What I saw on Friday night makes me think they will be fine.

Great players in key positions.

And a smart coach in James Webster.

What about Huddersfield, the first visiting

team in the qualifiers to go up and down the famous slope at Batley?

Trailed to an early penalty, Luke.

How did you approach this m`tch

Unless you have played on that pitch...

We started off the game really well.

The first half ran away to a decent lead.

Nine first-half tries.

I looked and thought you must been playing

downhill first half.

I was!

We scored some really good tries.

We played quite disciplined.

We were really patient in approach, not rushing things and scored some

really good tries.

The big fella.

Yeah.

Unfortunately that didn't l`st.

And at half-time, sometimes a bit of a mental barrier.

When you have a healthy lead in the first half it is

about sticking to your guns, staying composed, staying c`lm.

Repeating what you did in the first half.

They managed to get on top of us in the second half.

They played some good rugby.

We know more than anything dlse if we want to get out of this

situation we need to defend our way out of it.

We've always been able to score points.

Throughout the season.

But we haven't defended that well.

To get out of this situation we need to defend better

than we did in the second h`lf.

Did you target a run of three in a row

against championship side as games you have to win?

I think you have to win every game.

In this middle eight you can't sit back and pinpoint games

and think we will rest playdrs for this one and try and win this.

It looks really easy.

You want to blow your way ott of this as quick as possible.

Get in and get out and get `s many points on the board and win

as many games as we can.

A couple of quick tries for Ryan, who got a

hat-trick which was crucial with Danny Brough not there.

Broughy's an amazing player.

Someone you always miss.

But Brierley and Jamie Ellis did a cracking job.

He has got pace to burn, has Ryan.

What is his best position?

I don't know yet.

He's still only young.

He's new to this level of rugby but we are

going to find out in years to come.

What does he want to play?

I'm not sure.

One thing I can tell you, he's an extremely talented player.

In whatever sport there is no substitute for speed

and he has it in buckets.

He is a real good player and I think he will develop into a really

good six.

Batley won the second half 26-1 .

Was that more than just the slope?

Sometimes players use that as an excuse.

You've got to get it out of your head.

We are professional athletes.

You don't realise how steep it is on that hill until you

play on it.

We have got to be mentally strong going out there and

putting on the same perform`nce as we did in the first.

We might not run away with it as much.

But we should be winning the second half.

This was the final few minutes of the game

with another two Batley trids.

86 points in this match.

Defences were on top.

Exactly!

You don't need to be a genius to work out both sides

attacked very well but didn't defend very well.

It was a little bit slack.

We let in a few tries.

We were just a bit mentally weak in that second half.

With only 30 seconds to go on this try, and the

chip over, we just showed, just a lack of urgency and a desire

to keep them out which is something we need to eradicate.

A quick word from you on Huddersfield.

Do you think Rovers will be OK?

I think they will be really targeting their championship games.

After round one against Salford I was worried for them.

I thought Salford was reallx dominant in that game.

I thought Huddersfield might be in trouble.

But the chairmanship fixtures will help them.

-- But the championship fixtures will help them.

The first week has given thdm a lot of confidence.

Scored a lot of points that last weekend but they have

leaked a few.

The next game is a massive game against London.

As they play Leight in that final, one of the

four championship games.

They have got really big couple of games coming up.

You mentioned London.

Let's go to the capital.

Leeds face the Broncos on Saturday.

No problem for the Rhinos so far.

How did they go about this game?

The commentator, Matt Newsome.

here against the Super League holders!
