Some cities just brief history. Some cities are iconic. Some cities

:00:28.:00:37.
:00:38.:00:38.

can stir the memory. It is Linford Christie, and the British captain

:00:38.:00:48.
:00:48.:00:50.

is the Olympic champion! Sally Gunnell gets the gold. He has won

:00:50.:00:57.

nothing but admiration. Some cities can inspire. That is utterly

:00:57.:01:07.
:01:07.:01:07.

brilliant. But this is not just any city, this is Barcelona. Welcome to

:01:07.:01:17.
:01:17.:01:53.

A very warm welcome to Barcelona for the 2013 world swimming

:01:53.:01:56.

championships and with eight on our poolside perch are Mark Foster and

:01:56.:02:02.

a new to us, but not new to this environment, Rebecca Adlington. The

:02:02.:02:07.

world's greatest swimmers are assembled in Barcelona this week.

:02:07.:02:17.
:02:17.:02:42.

If you need a reminder of who they He is absolutely brilliant. She is

:02:42.:02:49.

going to win a gold medal in the women's 800 metres freestyle. The

:02:49.:02:59.
:02:59.:03:00.

individual medley. What a beautiful boy! We are going to start by

:03:00.:03:08.

showing you one of those big names in action, and the American

:03:08.:03:14.

teenager Katie Ledecky burst into the limelight. It is the women's

:03:14.:03:24.
:03:24.:03:37.

400 metres freestyle from last the heats. The final of the women's

:03:37.:03:47.
:03:47.:03:48.

400 metres freestyle. Katie Ledecky was the fastest qualifier. Jazmin

:03:48.:03:51.

Carlin of Great Britain is the Welsh record holder and expect her

:03:51.:04:01.
:04:01.:04:02.

to go out nice and comfortably in lane three. What have you got to

:04:02.:04:09.

do? You have got to keep its move, it has got to be easy speed. The

:04:09.:04:14.

first 50 does not feel that hard. You do not want to burn out, so

:04:14.:04:19.

they want to keep it nice and smooth and set the race up. Katie

:04:20.:04:24.

Ledecky is bowing out in a not dissimilar fashion that she went

:04:24.:04:34.
:04:34.:04:34.

out in the 800 metres final in London. Jazmin Carlin is in 7th or

:04:34.:04:38.

8th position, but she has a good second half. She does not want to

:04:38.:04:45.

get too far behind. No, she does not, but she does swim well in the

:04:45.:04:51.

second 200 metres. Expect her to dig in. Her coach calls her a rock

:04:51.:05:00.

Fila. Is that fair, Becky? definitely not. She goes for it.

:05:00.:05:05.

She definitely does. But Katie Ledecky is not just going for it,

:05:05.:05:12.

she is storming it. She looks as if she is on course for a record.

:05:12.:05:16.

think she will come back as well. She trains for the distance, I do

:05:16.:05:23.

not think she is going to drop off and died. A possible world record.

:05:23.:05:28.

Jazmin Carlin is just at the top three down in the picture. She

:05:28.:05:34.

could get a bronze medal here. Katie Ledecky has gone off like a

:05:34.:05:44.

shot. She is underneath world record pace. Jazmin Carlin is in

:05:44.:05:48.

6th position and she is moving through the field and looking

:05:48.:05:54.

pretty good. Becky, what do you think at the moment? She is spent a

:05:54.:05:58.

good position. Obviously Katie is next to her and it is a bit is

:05:58.:06:03.

heartening to see where she is. But she has got a great position and

:06:03.:06:09.

hopefully she can bring it back. She has gone on to Kylie Palmer's

:06:09.:06:19.
:06:19.:06:19.

shoulders. Katie Ledecky is going to smash this world record. It will

:06:19.:06:24.

be interesting if Jazmin Carlin can get close to the Spanish girl who

:06:24.:06:32.

is second at the moment. But the Hungarian is also there. Camille

:06:32.:06:38.

Muffat at the bottom has gone. metres to go and it is Katie

:06:39.:06:48.
:06:49.:06:49.

Ledecky ahead of world record pace and she is looking very strong.

:06:49.:06:53.

Jazmin Carlin has moved up into 4th position now and this is the

:06:53.:06:58.

strongest part of her race. She has got to keep pushing Katie Ledecky.

:06:58.:07:04.

Do you think the world record is going to go? She is always strong

:07:04.:07:09.

on the last 50, but Jazmin Carlin has got a race on her hands up for

:07:09.:07:16.

the third position. She could do it. It is Lauren boil or Jazmin Carlin

:07:16.:07:22.

for the bronze medal. She is in the bronze-medal position. She is going

:07:22.:07:31.

to do it, I am so excited. world record is on. It is held by

:07:32.:07:41.
:07:42.:07:43.

Federica Pellegrini of Italy. She is just outside. The bronze has

:07:43.:07:48.

just gone to New Zealand. Jazmin Carlin has been touched out by 141

:07:48.:07:58.

hundredths of a second. It is so close. That is a tough one. Katie

:07:58.:08:08.
:08:08.:08:11.

Ledecky has broken for a menace. beautiful stroke and very high

:08:11.:08:19.

elbows. Becky, world Jazmin Carlin be happy with that? She swung so

:08:19.:08:25.

well and nearly got a medal. Or will she be disappointed? 4th is a

:08:25.:08:31.

horrible position. But she will see the positive. She will be upset,

:08:31.:08:41.
:08:41.:08:48.

but I think she will realise it is a positive. It says Jazmin Carlin

:08:49.:08:55.

up for the freestyle still to come. You look very happy at. You went

:08:55.:09:01.

under four minutes without one of those suits. It is crazy. My coach

:09:01.:09:10.

sometimes jokes around when I am doing 29 and he says, under four

:09:10.:09:13.

minutes, and I always thought it was a joke, but he must have known

:09:14.:09:23.
:09:24.:09:24.

it was in me. We will see you later She has got a tough programme here,

:09:24.:09:29.

but before we talk about her, your job in the commentary box needs a

:09:29.:09:36.

quick mention. How did you find that? I loved it, but it is amazing,

:09:36.:09:41.

but you are commenting on your best friends. Jazmin Carlin did a

:09:41.:09:45.

fantastic job and it sets her up for the rest of the week.

:09:45.:09:49.

Unfortunately, she has not qualified for the 1500 metres and

:09:49.:09:54.

she was hoping to get herself back in the water and up on the rostrum.

:09:54.:09:58.

But Katie Ledecky came under the radar abate in London and suddenly

:09:58.:10:03.

she has grown physically. She is here again and it was no one-hit

:10:03.:10:10.

wonder. You should talk to Becky about her beating her last year.

:10:10.:10:15.

When you are younger you make a huge improvements. It was a

:10:15.:10:20.

surprise as she won last year and in such fashion. But coming here in

:10:20.:10:25.

that 400 with nothing to lose, it was about her and the record.

:10:25.:10:29.

way you have known what it is like to win gold medals and everybody

:10:29.:10:34.

knows who you are until you are the goal to beat. She is also a target

:10:34.:10:40.

now four other girls. In the US team that you have had Michael

:10:40.:10:45.

Phelps and Ryan Lochte and Missy Franklin, so back home she will not

:10:45.:10:50.

be a huge star, but it spreads across the team with the US team.

:10:50.:10:56.

There are so many big names it spreads the pressure across. It was

:10:56.:11:00.

different in my position, but she is an unbelievable athlete. I am

:11:00.:11:06.

glad I do not have to re serve. has got a big programme, the 115

:11:06.:11:11.

hundred. It is tough going. It will be interesting to see how she gets

:11:11.:11:17.

on especially with the 800 after the 1500. I am so excited because

:11:17.:11:23.

there will be special things from here. Next up, it is the men's

:11:23.:11:28.

hundred metres breaststroke final. Sadly no Ross murder or Michael

:11:28.:11:34.

Jamieson in it. But Michael Churm isn't's strongest event is the 200

:11:34.:11:44.
:11:44.:11:58.

medallists in the Olympic Games. is going out very strongly. The

:11:58.:12:02.

question is whether he has got the energy and the training to hold on

:12:02.:12:12.
:12:12.:12:13.

to this place. Christian Sprenger is right where he needs to be.

:12:13.:12:16.

Cameron van der Burgh had to do this, the question is whether he

:12:16.:12:25.

can do this. He is taking Felipe Lima and Fabio Scozzoli with them.

:12:25.:12:31.

This is fascinating. Surely he cannot come back. He is holding

:12:31.:12:36.

well in that green cap for South Africa. Christian Sprenger is

:12:36.:12:42.

coming through. It is Christian Sprenger, the world champion, right

:12:42.:12:51.

on the touch. The bronze has gone to Felipe Lima of Brazil. A great

:12:51.:12:57.

swimmer from him. Look what it means, the world champion at the

:12:57.:13:01.

100 metres breaststroke. deserves that one, all year he has

:13:02.:13:08.

been half a second faster than the rest of the field. I think

:13:08.:13:11.

Christian Sprenger was saying it was Cameron van der Burgh's title

:13:11.:13:21.
:13:21.:13:27.

to lose. He knew Cameron van der Burgh was going to go out quickly.

:13:28.:13:32.

Congratulations, you have had a great year. A fantastic way to top

:13:32.:13:37.

it off. I went into that raised thinking it was possible to get the

:13:37.:13:41.

world championship. But you do not want to get too overwhelmed by

:13:41.:13:47.

every possibility. I said to myself, whatever happens will happen. And I

:13:47.:13:52.

came away with a win will start you Australians have had a tough time

:13:52.:13:57.

over the last year, particularly the swimmers. Have you been able to

:13:57.:14:01.

handle that? Coming off London it was always going to be a challenge

:14:01.:14:06.

to bring ourselves back again. But we are really strong as a team and

:14:06.:14:11.

we can put up some pretty good times in these championships.

:14:11.:14:21.
:14:21.:14:21.

Australia is back. Yes, we are back Said a swapped around from the

:14:21.:14:29.

Olympic Games in one and two. was AA huge jump for a Felipe Lima

:14:29.:14:32.

and that is where Brazil will be in four years time. I was not

:14:32.:14:40.

surprised. Cameron van der Burgh has sat a few problems and injuries

:14:40.:14:45.

this year, but it was a great race. He tried to take it out and break

:14:46.:14:51.

Christian Sprenger. It was disappointing at the Olympic Games

:14:51.:14:54.

across the sport for Australia and they will be delighted this early

:14:54.:15:00.

in the championships to get a gold medal. It is so important for them.

:15:00.:15:07.

It was similar for us with a disappointing Games last year. They

:15:07.:15:17.
:15:17.:15:24.

can just sign it off and now night and missing out on the final,

:15:24.:15:28.

he knew he couldn't take any chances. Yes, some of the more

:15:28.:15:32.

established swimmers will take it a little bit easier. This evening, I

:15:32.:15:39.

hope he has a little bit more again. The race plan will be to make the

:15:39.:15:45.

top 16, and he came out first, so he is obviously on top form. Yannick

:15:45.:15:50.

Agnel is a bit of a mystery at the moment. He has relocated to America.

:15:50.:15:55.

He said he was only going to compete in relays. Is he still going to be

:15:55.:16:00.

the force in this race? It is difficult. He wasn't even meant to

:16:00.:16:06.

do the 200 until a few weeks ago. He did swim in the relay last night. He

:16:06.:16:11.

wasn't where you would expect him to be. I think he is going to surprise

:16:11.:16:18.

people with the fact he is not on top form. And this young Japanese

:16:19.:16:25.

swimmer in the first heat. We have seen a cutout of him on Japanese

:16:25.:16:28.

television around the corner. They are pitching him to be the next big

:16:28.:16:36.

thing. He has a big programme. doing lots of races. He could be the

:16:37.:16:46.
:16:47.:16:51.

next Lochte. Maybe he will start 200 metres freestyle, Yannick Agnel

:16:51.:17:01.
:17:01.:17:04.

of France. Up in lane and the three. -- lane number three. There is some

:17:04.:17:11.

big guys in this race. Conor Dwyer, who actually swims at North

:17:11.:17:19.

Baltimore with Michael Phelps' coach. The Japanese swimmer goes in

:17:19.:17:29.
:17:29.:17:36.

Olympic champion, has gone out in three. Don't be surprised by the

:17:36.:17:40.

Japanese either. He comes back very quick. Agnel has had a bit of a

:17:40.:17:44.

turbulent time in the last year since the Olympic Games. He split

:17:44.:17:49.

with his coach without telling his coach. He told the French

:17:49.:17:52.

federation. Then he went over to America to have a meeting, and his

:17:52.:17:59.

coach thought he was just taking some time off. A bit sneaky. Lane

:17:59.:18:09.
:18:09.:18:13.

six, Thomas Fraser-Holmes. Talk about sneaky, Thomas Fraser-Holmes.

:18:13.:18:20.

USA's Conor Dwyer, team-mates with Michael Phelps until he gave up last

:18:20.:18:30.
:18:30.:18:31.

year. Fraser-Holmes is still looking good. The race is two and three.

:18:31.:18:37.

Agnel still has something left. And Oliveira of Brazil in lane four.

:18:37.:18:47.

Very tight. The white hat of France is still in there. Yannick Agnel,

:18:47.:18:57.
:18:57.:19:00.

the Olympic champion. Goodness me! Hagino has got it. Kosuke Hagino of

:19:00.:19:07.

Japan, winning that first semifinal. Agnel second. Dwyer third. The time

:19:07.:19:11.

is not that fast. With Robbie Renwick of Great Britain in the

:19:11.:19:16.

second semifinal, that is great news for him. That was amazing pace of

:19:16.:19:26.
:19:26.:19:31.

Hagino. The Olympic champion second. Not that quick! It was crazy splits

:19:31.:19:36.

from Hagino. We know he trains hard on the back end of the race, but all

:19:36.:19:42.

the eyes were on the top end of the pool, and everybody missed him!

:19:42.:19:47.

has got his 200 and his 400 medley still to come. Those really are his

:19:47.:19:53.

best. He got that bronze medal in the Olympic Games in the 400 medal,

:19:53.:19:57.

pushing Michael Phelps into force. Look at this, right at the end of

:19:57.:20:05.

the race. We thought Agnel and Dwyer were going to take the positions.

:20:05.:20:15.
:20:15.:20:26.

will have just watched that first semifinal. Very exciting indeed.

:20:26.:20:36.
:20:36.:20:36.

Ryan Lochte up in lane two. Is a toff, who is very fast, in lane six.

:20:36.:20:46.
:20:46.:20:48.

-- Danila Izotov. Robbie Renwick has just seen a slow first semi. I echo

:20:48.:20:52.

what Mark Foster said. He gave quite a lot in the heat this morning. He

:20:52.:20:57.

will have to step it up a bit because there are some good swimmers

:20:57.:21:05.

in this one. He has got Ryan Lochte two lanes away in lane two. Danila

:21:05.:21:10.

Izotov has the fastest time this year. He has got to do his own race,

:21:10.:21:15.

Renwick. Very, very important that he looks after himself and doesn't

:21:16.:21:20.

get spooked by anybody else. Absolutely. If you look at this

:21:20.:21:25.

list, you will get spooked! Ryan Lochte coming out in his fancy

:21:25.:21:33.

shoes. Just like the pair you have under your bed! He is the poster boy

:21:33.:21:37.

of American swimming now that Michael Phelps has retired. He is

:21:37.:21:42.

not the fastest in the world this year. He is the defending champion,

:21:42.:21:51.

but not the fastest in the world this year. The world University

:21:51.:21:54.

games champion very recently, and any Izotov is a big threat for the

:21:54.:22:04.
:22:04.:22:08.

final. Cameron McEvoy of Australia. The new order is appearing,

:22:08.:22:13.

certainly in Australian swimming. The world junior in the 50 and 100m

:22:13.:22:19.

freestyle. This is the 200. The Commonwealth champion in Delhi,

:22:19.:22:26.

Robbie Renwick. From the city of Glasgow. Writ is record holder.

:22:26.:22:30.

There's never been a better opportunity to make the final of the

:22:30.:22:34.

World Championships of this 200 metres freestyle. There's the

:22:34.:22:43.

defending champion, probably the favourite, Ryan Lochte. Lochte lane

:22:43.:22:53.
:22:53.:23:16.

heats. If Robbie Renwick does that got a decent start up there in two.

:23:16.:23:23.

The defending champion on the 200 200 back, 200 medley and 400 medley,

:23:23.:23:31.

Ryan Lochte - what a swimmer he is! Renwick seems to be regulating it a

:23:31.:23:36.

little bit more. He was not on the pace this morning and came through

:23:36.:23:41.

very, very quick in the last 50. Renwick has to not let them get too

:23:41.:23:51.
:23:51.:23:55.

far away. Right now, McAvoy, Lochte, is a toff, -- Danila Izotov. He has

:23:55.:24:01.

the fastest time in the world this year. Very good turn. Lochte not

:24:01.:24:07.

using his turn as well as he normally does. Yes. Robbie Renwick

:24:07.:24:12.

has got some work to do. He does come back well on the second 100

:24:12.:24:22.
:24:22.:24:37.

metres. He is probably about fifth Lochte is going well. Mac one Mac

:24:37.:24:47.
:24:47.:25:07.

still holding. -- Izotoff still last turn of Ryan Lochte was

:25:07.:25:11.

something special. Something amazing. He was hardly breathing.

:25:11.:25:18.

You didn't really use the turn on the 100 metres. Izotov Had a

:25:18.:25:25.

fantastic turn. He will get confidence from that. Lochte is

:25:25.:25:30.

still hanging about in the pool. A really solid swim from Renwick. Not

:25:30.:25:40.
:25:40.:25:51.

fazed by either side of him going very mature swim. I've got to tell

:25:51.:25:59.

you, the relief! He's going to qualify fourth. He will be next to

:25:59.:26:04.

Ryan Lochte and next to Conor Dwyer. He will be in lane six. Not a bad

:26:04.:26:11.

lane four the final four Robbie Renwick. The tracks start there, one

:26:11.:26:17.

foot in front of the other. Very interesting stroke. He reads very

:26:17.:26:24.

heavily over to his left hand side. Create a real loping stroke. Lochte

:26:24.:26:32.

is looking over. He is back at the end. That is a trademark of him. He

:26:32.:26:37.

says, I've got my position, why waste any more energy? Robbie

:26:37.:26:42.

Renwick did really well in the middle. I think Lochte was

:26:42.:26:49.

comfortable at the top there. A fairly lazy finish. Izotov Looks

:26:49.:26:59.
:26:59.:27:06.

good. And Robbie Renwick is in. paced it well. A fantastic swim. He

:27:06.:27:10.

will be pleased with that after the 400 he missed out on earlier in the

:27:10.:27:17.

week. Can he go one better? Can he make it onto the rostrum? We would

:27:17.:27:24.

hope so. If he is on form, he has a lot more. But is he on form? He swam

:27:24.:27:31.

a great race. He just did his own thing. He didn't go out too fast. He

:27:31.:27:37.

did his own thing in the pool, and then he makes it back. He is in that

:27:37.:27:41.

optimum lane, and some of the great Olympic swimmers are on the outside

:27:41.:27:46.

of him. It must be hard to feel that you don't have to go with them.

:27:46.:27:52.

is one of those swims... A race, when it is paced, you can go with

:27:53.:27:58.

other people and burn other people off. When Becky is one her best

:27:58.:28:02.

races, she commanded it from the front. Some people are good at that,

:28:02.:28:08.

and other people like using other people. People have different

:28:08.:28:13.

tactics. We will hear from Robbie later on. We are building up to the

:28:13.:28:18.

final of the women's 200-metre individual medley, where we have not

:28:18.:28:23.

one but two women lining up. One of them is the very young Siobhan-Marie

:28:23.:28:29.

O'Connor, who qualified in night fastest. And Sophie Allen as well,

:28:29.:28:34.

fourth fastest in qualification. Unbelievable. It is great that

:28:34.:28:39.

Siobhan-Marie is in there. She is in contention for Rio. It is amazing

:28:39.:28:44.

for her that she has this final experience. I am excited to see what

:28:44.:28:49.

is coming from her. She swam really quick earlier in the season. It will

:28:49.:28:54.

be great to see her get in amongst the race. And Sophie swam a great

:28:55.:28:59.

race yesterday. She did swim a 100 breaststroke this morning, and

:28:59.:29:05.

didn't make it back. Hopefully, she can swim well tonight. Globally,

:29:05.:29:13.

this is a big race. The Olympic champion is there. Belmonte Garcia

:29:13.:29:16.

is being cheered right now. The local support for her is going to be

:29:16.:29:24.

huge. It is a stacked final. You have Alicia Coutts of Australia as

:29:24.:29:30.

well. It is the opportunity for these two to get the experience. In

:29:30.:29:34.

three years' time... I'm not saying that is when it really matters,

:29:34.:29:38.

because it matters now. But it is experience of the big stage. The

:29:38.:29:43.

more you do it, the more comfortable you become. Everyone wants to aim

:29:43.:29:48.

for the finals and get on the podiums. This is a great stepping

:29:48.:29:53.

stone for these guys, especially Siobhan, who was a bit younger. It

:29:53.:30:01.

is a great block for for Rio. Coutts has a big programme. It may

:30:01.:30:08.

have cost her in the relay yesterday for Australia. We have a big Chinese

:30:08.:30:12.

contingent in the audience here as well. Let's handover the commentary

:30:13.:30:22.
:30:23.:30:41.

Mary O'Connor is in lane eight for Great Britain. Sophie Allen is in

:30:41.:30:51.
:30:51.:30:51.

lane six for Great Britain. What a Lane assignment for the Brits.

:30:51.:30:57.

Absolutely. But Katinka Hosszu in Lane four has had multiple races

:30:58.:31:05.

over the year. She broke the one the Hungarian record this morning

:31:05.:31:15.
:31:15.:31:20.

and pulled out of the semis to try and win this one. Great Britain in

:31:20.:31:26.

lane six and eight. Six is Sophie Allen and eight A Sherborne Marie

:31:26.:31:32.

O'Connor. The weakest leg for the British girls is the backstroke.

:31:32.:31:38.

There breaststroke is good. But out of the blocks and going very well

:31:38.:31:45.

is Katinka Hosszu. She has started really well. We know Shiwen Ye has

:31:45.:31:52.

got a fantastic three staff at the end of the race. Katinka Hosszu has

:31:52.:31:57.

a fantastic backstroke. She did a 59 this morning breaking the

:31:57.:32:03.

Hungarian record. She is trying to put some distance between herself

:32:03.:32:10.

and the white cap of China, Shiwen Ye. Katinka Hosszu's breaststroke

:32:10.:32:15.

is not bad. But Siobhan Mary O'Connor is doing well on the

:32:15.:32:21.

backstroke and is going to turn in second place. She was second after

:32:21.:32:25.

the fly and that is really good for Siobhan Murray a corner. She has

:32:25.:32:32.

got a good breaststroke as well. Now the race is on. They are going

:32:32.:32:38.

to try and catch Katinka Hosszu, the Hungarian. Siobhan Mary

:32:38.:32:42.

O'Connor is still in medal position. The rest of the field are starting

:32:43.:32:49.

to really attack now. Alicia Coutts is going to be in second place. She

:32:49.:32:56.

has got great freestyle. The Olympic champion is in 8th place.

:32:56.:33:01.

Sophie Allen is coming through. What a great race by Katinka Hosszu.

:33:01.:33:05.

Dominated from the start to the finish. I cannot see her losing

:33:05.:33:15.

back, but I do not believe she will give it up. Alicia Coutts is a very

:33:15.:33:22.

good three-star. Finally Katinka Hosszu is going to win a big race.

:33:22.:33:27.

She did not quite break the world record, but she becomes world

:33:27.:33:36.

champion. The silver medal goes to Alicia Coutts. That is her third

:33:36.:33:40.

silver medals so far these championships. And Spain has got

:33:40.:33:47.

the bronze. What a fantastic swim by Katinka Hosszu. You can hear the

:33:47.:33:53.

crowd. You knew the Spanish girl got the bronze medal by the

:33:53.:34:00.

reaction. But she has raced so hard and so determined this year.

:34:00.:34:03.

Everywhere we have seen her raised through Air Europe and the world

:34:03.:34:08.

she has taken 10 or more events as she has prepared herself for

:34:08.:34:13.

raising tough and hard all the way through this competition. That is

:34:13.:34:18.

her first world title. Maybe another one? She does so many

:34:18.:34:28.
:34:28.:34:37.

events. She won it by miles. Nearly 1.5 seconds. 7th and 8th for the

:34:37.:34:47.

A great experience for the British girls. Sadly it Siobhan Mary

:34:47.:34:51.

O'Connor, I have looked as if she was with them on the turn, not

:34:51.:34:57.

quite her race today, but they will get experience. Definitely. They

:34:57.:35:01.

will be disappointed. They went slower than they did in their heats

:35:01.:35:06.

and the semi-finals come as Sir they will be disappointed. But that

:35:06.:35:10.

should drive them on for the next meet and hopefully they will train

:35:10.:35:17.

and work even harder. The hard work that Katinka Hosszu has done, but

:35:17.:35:23.

Shiwen Ye was nowhere in that event. Katinka Hosszu was determined she

:35:23.:35:30.

was going to address that. Also when she did the 100 backstroke and

:35:30.:35:33.

got a national record and poured out this morning, when people are

:35:33.:35:39.

on forum they pull out of the meat. Shiwen Ye is not the swimmer she

:35:39.:35:45.

was last year. It is an experience for our girls. The more you come to

:35:45.:35:49.

a competition and race the best people in the world, the more

:35:49.:35:54.

comfortable you become doing it. It is great experience. There is still

:35:54.:36:00.

a lot more to come from those two. There is an awful lot more to come

:36:00.:36:04.

with their age. This is a sea- change in the attitude towards

:36:04.:36:09.

British swimming. They want to tighten the squad and they want it

:36:09.:36:14.

to people -- to be people who get into finals. It is a totally

:36:14.:36:20.

different approach to the team. It is such a small team. It is nice to

:36:20.:36:24.

see that and it does need to be more focused. Everyone has to have

:36:24.:36:29.

the same edition and the same goal, to get on the podium. It will be

:36:30.:36:33.

interesting next year with the Commonwealth Games because it is

:36:33.:36:38.

going to be at home again. A lot of these guys had the home crowd

:36:38.:36:43.

experience in London and they have experienced it and they know how it

:36:43.:36:53.

can lift them. Sharon has managed to catch up with Sophie and Siobhan.

:36:53.:36:57.

Maybe not as fast as you would have liked to have gone, but fantastic

:36:58.:37:03.

experience. Everybody wants to improve after the semi-final, but

:37:03.:37:09.

it was an amazing race. Everyone was so close with Katinka Hosszu at

:37:09.:37:18.

the front. It just was not any tonight. Were you surprised to be

:37:18.:37:24.

in there? Yes, definitely. It was a crazy 10 minutes after the semi-

:37:24.:37:30.

final yesterday. I was determined to make the final, that was my aim

:37:30.:37:37.

when I came here. I was just disappointed I could not do a

:37:37.:37:43.

better time tonight. It is a big learning curve. You go out very

:37:43.:37:51.

fast and swim it in a pained away. What is there to work on? I think I

:37:51.:37:55.

worked to my strengths a bit too much because I know my flight is

:37:55.:38:01.

pretty strong. I could sacrifice something at the beginning to make

:38:01.:38:05.

up a few seconds on the back. it help that you push each other

:38:06.:38:12.

like crazy in training? Yes, definitely. My first 100 is my

:38:12.:38:18.

witness and her second 100 is, so it works well for us. Well done,

:38:18.:38:23.

ladies. We did not mention that how close they are in training and

:38:23.:38:27.

swapping British records as well over the last few days. That bodes

:38:27.:38:32.

well because they will push each other on. I know you had to do a

:38:32.:38:36.

lot of your training on your own, but having someone close to push

:38:36.:38:41.

you must be a positive. Sophie is very new, so it has taken a while

:38:41.:38:47.

to adapt, but they were brilliantly together. They will get stronger

:38:47.:38:52.

and stronger and better and better and work on each other's weaknesses.

:38:52.:38:59.

Let's move on to the 400 metres freestyle. We should also mention

:38:59.:39:09.
:39:09.:39:30.

James Guy competing in his first pace at the moment. Sun Yang's

:39:30.:39:40.
:39:40.:39:40.

strength is the second harp. -- second half. James Guy is closest

:39:40.:39:44.

to us. It is very difficult to follow from these pictures, I am

:39:44.:39:54.
:39:54.:39:54.

afraid. Connor Jaeger is holding it, the 22 year-old from Michigan. They

:39:54.:39:59.

have been talking quite highly about this guy. They are looking

:39:59.:40:06.

for the next new star with the retirement of Michael Phelps. But

:40:06.:40:11.

Sun Yang is very strong. He comes back like a rocket in the last 100

:40:11.:40:18.

metres. It is very interesting that he has set such a hard place.

:40:18.:40:25.

metres to go. Sun Yang is half a second behind world record pace. I

:40:25.:40:31.

wonder if he has gone out a little bit too quick. He is looking very

:40:31.:40:36.

good. Connor Jaeger is trying to stay with him, but it is all about

:40:36.:40:43.

the world record. Sun Yang has spotted Connor Jaeger. I think he

:40:43.:40:53.
:40:53.:40:57.

has moved his stroke rate up. Sun Yang has probably fallen short of

:40:57.:41:07.

the world record. He does come back very fast indeed. He is just

:41:07.:41:17.
:41:17.:41:21.

outside the record. Connor Jaeger has got the bronze. James Guy swum

:41:21.:41:27.

well, he finished in 5th. That was his first world final. That is very

:41:27.:41:34.

good from the young Brit, 17 years of age. That was a great swim from

:41:34.:41:44.
:41:44.:41:44.

him. He has not had the best of years. The Japanese 18-year-old

:41:44.:41:54.
:41:54.:41:56.

came through. James I got 5th. That must have really hurt him in the

:41:56.:42:06.
:42:06.:42:19.

That is a very impressive World Championship debut for James Guy.

:42:19.:42:26.

He has had a big season. He has done a European, the juniors, the

:42:26.:42:32.

trials as well. Is it easier or harder as a distance runner or a

:42:32.:42:38.

sprinter? Everybody is individual and then it comes down to the coach.

:42:38.:42:43.

We used to have our trials in March, but now we have the trials a month

:42:43.:42:49.

ago, which I like. Once you are swimming fast and you are on a high,

:42:49.:42:54.

it is easier to maintain a high. The best way to maintain form is to

:42:54.:42:59.

raise as much as possible. It is the men's 50 metre fly next. This

:42:59.:43:04.

is an open race. Power and speed can make up for any lack of

:43:04.:43:14.
:43:14.:43:36.

Florent Manaudou. He is going well, but the rest of the field is coming

:43:36.:43:46.
:43:46.:43:53.

back. It is the Brazilian! Oh, my goodness me. The defending champion.

:43:53.:43:56.

Could this Evans, nowhere near as quick as I thought it was going to

:43:56.:44:06.
:44:06.:44:14.

be. Silver medal for the USA. Florent Manaudou was last!

:44:14.:44:18.

American was a backstroke where Anto two years ago. How did Florent

:44:18.:44:28.
:44:28.:44:52.

Manaudou come last. The defending stadium, because he did fail a drug

:44:52.:44:56.

test. It is about respect. Swimmers do respect athletes who were clean.

:44:56.:45:02.

There are not that many drug cheats in swimming. There is a strict rule

:45:02.:45:06.

and format of drug testing. It is pretty strict within swimming, so we

:45:06.:45:11.

are very lucky. There is a respect thing, where athletes may feel a bit

:45:12.:45:17.

cheated by him as well. You were a bronze medallist in this in 2001.

:45:17.:45:24.

How do you get a medal in the 50 fly? Swim quick! It is a question of

:45:24.:45:29.

getting it all right. With me, the start had to be right. With

:45:29.:45:36.

butterfly, the more you rush, the timing has to be right. I would

:45:36.:45:43.

start quick, find my strokes, and the power came through. You have to

:45:43.:45:50.

not snatch the water. With Cesar Cielo, it is a grey area, because it

:45:50.:45:55.

wasn't proved either way. Let's move on to the women's 100 metres fly

:45:55.:46:02.

final now. Six of the line-up were in the final in London last year. A

:46:02.:46:12.
:46:12.:46:28.

butterfly. That was very close indeed. Otterson has come up really

:46:28.:46:38.
:46:38.:46:39.

well. Sjostrom is staying with her. Going well is Bianchi of Italy. I'm

:46:39.:46:49.

not sure she can hold that pace. Ottesen Grey is faster than the rest

:46:49.:46:59.
:46:59.:47:24.

Sjostrom of Sweden gets it. The Olympic champion has to take bronze.

:47:24.:47:31.

That was a textbook swim there from so strong. -- from Stu Ostrom. She

:47:31.:47:35.

used the different techniques she had used in the semifinal. She said

:47:35.:47:38.

she was more relaxed in this competition. Had a few changes in

:47:38.:47:43.

her life and the Olympic Games. Going from the fourth -- from a

:47:43.:47:48.

fourth in the Olympics to winning now... You can see she is excited.

:47:48.:47:58.
:47:58.:48:06.

how it can spur you on. Unbelievable. She swam it so well.

:48:06.:48:13.

Nobody was going to beat her. She wanted it. She looks fantastic.

:48:13.:48:21.

world-class field. Vollmer won the Olympic Games. Going into these

:48:21.:48:28.

championships, she looks good with the times. When Sarah Sjostrom first

:48:28.:48:34.

raised, she was very young. She came fourth in the Olympics. She has come

:48:34.:48:43.

back and one. For many, it is hard to keep it going. It is a cycle of

:48:43.:48:47.

four years, and it is a very long time in your life to commit to. She

:48:47.:48:54.

is at the beginning of that, and it bodes well. Definitely. She was only

:48:54.:49:00.

15, which was so, so young. She went back and trained hard. She wants to

:49:00.:49:05.

achieve more. She is motivated and driven, and works hard. Another lady

:49:05.:49:11.

who does all of those is up next. We are going to show you the second

:49:11.:49:21.
:49:21.:49:45.

breaststroke semifinal for a reason. Ruta Meilutyte. A brilliant start.

:49:45.:49:50.

That is a great omen for this world record. Let's hope she does it.

:49:50.:49:54.

Great. Not just the reaction time, but the way she came through the

:49:54.:50:00.

water. Meilutyte is right on course for this. She just needs to qualify

:50:00.:50:09.

for the final. The night before the final, the semis, is the time to go

:50:09.:50:15.

for world records. She is well ahead of her own best time. She is off the

:50:15.:50:25.

world record, but that is a very fast one. Yuliya Efrimova is going

:50:25.:50:35.
:50:35.:50:50.

proved she can go even faster. What a great swim that was! Attacked it

:50:50.:50:55.

down that first 50. She has got the world record. The Olympic champion

:50:55.:51:01.

is now the world record holder on the 50 metres breaststroke. The same

:51:01.:51:06.

reaction as we saw last year. Almost disbelief. This girl has trained

:51:06.:51:14.

very hard. The medal hasn't been won, but the world record has been

:51:14.:51:17.

captured. She is now the Olympic champion and the world record

:51:17.:51:25.

holder. That first 50 was blistering. The pacing was perfect.

:51:25.:51:35.

To get under 30 seconds, quicker than this morning. Almost at the

:51:35.:51:40.

end, just that glide... If she can finish on a full stroke, she could

:51:40.:51:46.

maybe go even quicker tomorrow night. On butterfly, you try and

:51:46.:51:51.

adjust your strokes are you finish right on the end. You do that on

:51:51.:51:54.

breaststroke as well. It's the sort of thing you learn with experience.

:51:54.:52:02.

Maybe she needs a few more years to work it out! It is Plymouth and

:52:02.:52:12.
:52:12.:52:21.

like to think of her as being made in Britain, don't we? What was a

:52:21.:52:26.

scary about that race was she glided in at the end. What else can this

:52:26.:52:31.

girl do? She is just unbelievable. I am looking forward to the final

:52:31.:52:36.

tomorrow night. Do you think she could break it again tomorrow?

:52:36.:52:46.
:52:46.:52:47.

Without a shadow of the doubt. If she has a good finish, maybe another

:52:47.:52:51.

half a second. When you saw her walk off for her interview, if you look

:52:51.:52:59.

at her back, she has developed a lot more muscle. You have the maturity

:52:59.:53:05.

that comes mentally and physically as well, between 15 and 16. It is so

:53:05.:53:10.

exciting what she can go on to achieve. Definitely. She has got one

:53:10.:53:15.

of the best stance I have ever seen. She is amazing. We do like to

:53:15.:53:19.

think of her as British, and a lot of the guys on the British team know

:53:19.:53:25.

her very well. We do cheer for her. We will be rooting for her

:53:25.:53:31.

tomorrow. Next up is the women's 100 metres backstroke semifinals. We

:53:31.:53:36.

have a British interest in this. Betty has a lot of interest in this,

:53:36.:53:46.
:53:46.:54:00.

as she spends a lot of time with 100 metres backstroke. Lauren

:54:00.:54:06.

Quigley right at the top there. A decent start from her. Liz Pelton

:54:06.:54:13.

from the USA as well. Pelton didn't go out too quickly, but came back

:54:13.:54:22.

very strong in the end. Quigley is doing well. Currently in fourth

:54:22.:54:27.

place. We would like to do well for sure. The middle of the pool is

:54:27.:54:36.

where the race is. Force will do, I think. She has got to bring it back

:54:36.:54:42.

down this last 25 metres. It looks like it is Seebohm at the moment.

:54:42.:54:52.
:54:52.:55:13.

Terakawa third. Lauren Quigley was sixth in the end. Hocking finished

:55:13.:55:23.
:55:23.:55:26.

very well as well. The first semifinal won by Seebohm. Lauren

:55:26.:55:36.
:55:36.:55:40.

Quigley, finishing 12th overall, and not making it through to tomorrow's

:55:40.:55:45.

final. The fastest qualifier Missy Franklin, that girl who did so well

:55:45.:55:55.
:55:55.:55:55.

in London. She is the favourite going into tomorrow's final. It was

:55:55.:55:59.

the men's semifinal as well, and unfortunately, Christopher

:55:59.:56:05.

Walker-Hebborn didn't make it through either. Lauren is only 18.

:56:05.:56:10.

This is her first competition. She is just shining through. This is her

:56:10.:56:13.

first senior meat. When I went through to my first world

:56:13.:56:23.
:56:23.:56:24.

competition, I was in pieces. It was great experience for her tonight.

:56:24.:56:30.

She is definitely the future. the names to watch. Will Christopher

:56:30.:56:36.

be disappointed? Yes, definitely. In the trials, he swum a fantastic

:56:36.:56:41.

time. He was nearly a second off that. The time you want to deliver

:56:41.:56:45.

is when you come to your Championships, as closed your best

:56:45.:56:49.

as possible. Tomorrow, one race in particular stands out, the men's 200

:56:49.:56:56.

metres freestyle with Robbie Renwick and Ryan Lochte. Agnel as well,

:56:56.:57:02.

depending on how good his training is going. A great chance for Robbie.

:57:02.:57:08.

He has got a shout. It is a loaded final. The semifinals were not that

:57:08.:57:13.

quick, so he is somebody who is always up for a race. He has got a

:57:13.:57:22.

chance. We will not write him off. Anything could happen. And that 1500

:57:22.:57:27.

freestyle as well. Definitely, I cannot wait for that race. I think

:57:27.:57:35.

that world record might go. Ledecky is on form. The men's 100 metres

:57:35.:57:45.
:57:45.:57:45.

backstroke, with Grevers. He Johno had a great semifinal as well. You

:57:45.:57:55.
:57:55.:57:56.

can't name it. -- hedge I know. Ruta Meilutyte as well, going for

:57:56.:58:00.

another world record, and a gold medal. I think she can go even

:58:00.:58:06.

faster. I think she can break that world record again. A good

:58:06.:58:13.

atmosphere here tonight. Lovely to see the Spanish swimmer, Belmonte,

:58:14.:58:19.

get on to the rostrum and get the home crowd going. I have raced in
