You'd half expect her to make that, especially hitting up into the wind.

:01:18.:01:24.

Go but yes, you would on other surfaces, but I do think it is a

:01:25.:01:28.

tough shot to play our grass court. To really get under the ball and

:01:29.:01:31.

spin it over your opponent's head. That's more like it! An emphatic way

:01:32.:01:40.

to record her first win. That's something Radwanska won't be

:01:41.:02:02.

allowing her to do, get hold of the Baltic topic comes that very hard.

:02:03.:02:07.

Lucic-Baroni very quick up to this one. All over it. Too much hyped

:02:08.:02:33.

from Radwanska. -- height. Yes, might find it a little harder

:02:34.:02:55.

coming down the end where we believe the wind is blowing into her so she

:02:56.:02:59.

is having to fight against it. She should be used all of that

:03:00.:03:32.

because there are other players who can beat her when it comes to power.

:03:33.:03:39.

That's what she's so good at, and absorbing pace from her opponents

:03:40.:03:43.

and redirecting the play. Just a little wayward in this game,

:03:44.:03:59.

Radwanska. It is a break for the qualifier. You

:04:00.:04:24.

would expect nothing less of Lucic-Baroni.

:04:25.:04:34.

Now, this isn't such a good sign. I'm just thinking about Mirjana, it

:04:35.:04:42.

doesn't seem very good, does it? She's 56th in the world, which is a

:04:43.:04:51.

fantastic ranking, and has won a lot of matches, but it's so strong. The

:04:52.:04:58.

last direct at into main draws was Heather Watson at 55. In case that

:04:59.:05:03.

sounds rather confusing, Mirjana must've just got a couple of spots

:05:04.:05:09.

from when the entry lists were sorted out for this event, which is

:05:10.:05:14.

usually six weeks before the start. It does get a little confusing. I

:05:15.:05:22.

was on the tool when she was 15 or 16 and won her first tournament when

:05:23.:05:26.

she was 16. She won her second couple of years ago at 32. Just

:05:27.:05:34.

can't quite get over it. She's done really well to come back. Had quite

:05:35.:05:38.

a few years out of the game. No longer lives in Croatia but she is

:05:39.:05:42.

still their best player, still represents them.

:05:43.:05:51.

She married a number of years ago now. I don't know what's going on

:05:52.:05:58.

but she offers three doesn't feel too well. That's not the best sign,

:05:59.:06:02.

is it? The doctor out. Well, she did play a match earlier

:06:03.:06:20.

today, beat the lucky loser Denisa Allertova in straight sets. I can't

:06:21.:06:30.

say there is anything obvious. Five games that they've played.

:06:31.:06:37.

No medical time-out taken. That's good to do, just let Radwanska know

:06:38.:06:47.

what's happening. Maybe she was just a little bit under the weather.

:06:48.:06:55.

The sun's out here in Eastbourne. You've got to feel chirpy, surely!

:06:56.:07:01.

The fans are feeling good. If she isn't feeling great, she'll

:07:02.:07:15.

want to keep these points short and snappy, which she tries to do

:07:16.:07:19.

anyway. There is no holding back when it comes to Lucic-Baroni. It is

:07:20.:07:23.

all or nothing, no plan B. But unfortunately, when she was at

:07:24.:08:31.

her very best, that was a long time ago. Too many errors these days.

:08:32.:08:37.

Still a fine player and quite capable of worrying the top.

:08:38.:08:48.

Offered to WTA titles, I wonder which one brings her the most joy,

:08:49.:08:56.

the first one or the last one. -- of her two WTA titles.

:08:57.:09:59.

Certainly the amount of time and commitment she's put in on the grass

:10:00.:10:04.

this season has paid off. Whatever happens here, after the first round

:10:05.:10:13.

in Holland... Much better here in Eastbourne. As she recovers from a

:10:14.:10:22.

three-game deficit to level up in this first set.

:10:23.:11:02.

I'd hazard a guess she's feeling a tad better and Radwanska once again

:11:03.:11:08.

under pressure on her serve. So important for Radwanska to really

:11:09.:11:35.

hit her shots here because Lucic-Baroni will be taking

:11:36.:11:36.

advantage of a wise. -- otherwise. Just get the feeling over the last

:11:37.:11:54.

12 months, that's department has been beefed up. Always accurate with

:11:55.:11:56.

her deliveries. Very quick, Radwanska to change

:11:57.:12:16.

things up if she thinks things are going the wrong way. Great on-board

:12:17.:12:19.

computer that she has. That could have been awkward.

:12:20.:12:33.

Radwanska hold serve. And pushes ahead once more in the second set.

:12:34.:12:42.

You talked about her mindset with her serve, what does that mean?

:12:43.:12:48.

There comes a point in the player's development that technical lead big

:12:49.:12:54.

changes are hard to make and to add another five or ten mph behind your

:12:55.:12:59.

server is tough to do. Particularly when you hit your 20s. But the

:13:00.:13:03.

mindset of trying to be more aggressive, that is something you

:13:04.:13:09.

are in control of yourself. To toss the ball up, she launches herself

:13:10.:13:13.

into the serve, that is something that Radwanska does much better

:13:14.:13:19.

these days. And overall, with the rest of her game. I am a big

:13:20.:13:26.

believer, aggressive tennis -- if aggressive tennis doesn't come to

:13:27.:13:30.

you naturally, if you're mindset can be up there on your server, it rubs

:13:31.:13:34.

off on to the rest of your game. It can make you become more aggressive

:13:35.:13:40.

from the back of the Court or at the front of the court and everything

:13:41.:13:46.

else follows. You anticipated my next question! Are there any other

:13:47.:13:50.

aspects of her game which you have seen change? She is looking to go

:13:51.:13:54.

after second serves more and get up the court. And the other thing for

:13:55.:13:59.

Radwanska is that this year her scheduling has been better. She is

:14:00.:14:03.

smarter about how much he plays and if she is injured or she has a

:14:04.:14:08.

niggle, she doesn't need to put herself on the line week in, week

:14:09.:14:11.

out. She needs to peek at the right tournaments. And she has trained her

:14:12.:14:20.

clay-court season. New ball skills -- new ball.

:14:21.:15:12.

She looks very good on the ball. Particularly when she doesn't have

:15:13.:15:19.

to run or stretch for it. When she has got the time.

:15:20.:15:33.

Game, Mrs Lucic-Baroni. The Croatian really sticking in here. She had the

:15:34.:15:57.

doctor out a couple of games ago. Her husband, to the left of your

:15:58.:16:07.

picture. And coach, to the right. Husbands doesn't fancy combining the

:16:08.:16:16.

role. Oh, that was huge! Very compact on that backhand. Uses a

:16:17.:16:23.

very stiff bracket, Szczesny don't get the sound on the replay but it

:16:24.:16:28.

came right of the sweet spot. Great racket head speed.

:16:29.:17:03.

that's where Radwanska is clever. She doesn't necessarily play the

:17:04.:17:13.

outright pass. She liked the target. Delightful, it really is, from our

:17:14.:18:15.

top seed. Some authority here. Certainly not having it all her own

:18:16.:18:22.

way. I wonder how long Lucic-Baroni will play for? Is she inspired by

:18:23.:18:28.

the owners Williams or Kimiko Dante who is even older than me! I think

:18:29.:18:36.

all the players are inspired by her. She's in her 40s now. I think she's

:18:37.:18:47.

getting beyond that! I remember, 1520 years ago, when you are

:18:48.:18:53.

approaching or 30s, before that was going to be when you need to start

:18:54.:18:57.

thinking about what the earth you would do apart from tennis. In my

:18:58.:19:03.

late 20s, people started asking, when you retiring?! Nowadays, if you

:19:04.:19:12.

don't go on to your 30s, it is as if you are putting up yours too early.

:19:13.:19:21.

But the tour has so much to offer. If you are playing those big events

:19:22.:19:27.

week in, week out, it makes it so much more enjoyable. You are not

:19:28.:19:33.

grafting at the ITF tournaments. Yes, she had to work away through

:19:34.:19:36.

the qualifying rounds, but it was all worthwhile. Yes, and she was on

:19:37.:19:46.

the cut of making the Olympic cut, -- on the cusp of making the cut.

:19:47.:19:50.

But she missed many years of tennis so she is probably about 27 or 28 in

:19:51.:19:56.

tennis years. Serving here to stay in this first set.

:19:57.:20:22.

She is a tough cookie, Radwanska, tough on herself. The ball really

:20:23.:20:27.

moved on her there. Not happy with that. It hit the line

:20:28.:21:31.

right in front of our commentary box. And it has been a good set from

:21:32.:21:40.

Lucic-Baroni, but facing set points here.

:21:41.:21:46.

Game and first set, Miss Radwanska. Radwanska slightly cross that she

:21:47.:21:58.

let a three - zero lead slip, but in the end, get the job done. Wins by

:21:59.:22:04.

six games to four. Just in case you have forgotten from last year, you

:22:05.:22:11.

can have your coach on pretty much once per set.

:22:12.:22:24.

As you can see, it is a lovely sunny afternoon at Eastbourne and if you

:22:25.:22:55.

want to follow any tennis news, you needed BBC sport at. Once we are

:22:56.:22:59.

done here, then I am sure you are in complete football don't -- dose, and

:23:00.:23:07.

this is what Radwanska wants to get off the court in time to see. On the

:23:08.:23:14.

red button today. And then highlights of everything and

:23:15.:23:20.

discussions at 10:55pm. And 35 minutes later in Northern Ireland

:23:21.:23:23.

because you will still be recovering from the enormity of the victory

:23:24.:23:26.

over Germany! If you like your cricket, this is

:23:27.:23:30.

what is taking place today. You can follow that now on the BBC app where

:23:31.:23:36.

you can get the clips as well as followed the BBC Test match special.

:23:37.:23:39.

That's on BBC five live sports extra.

:23:40.:23:47.

I don't think she was talking about where can we go see the football!

:23:48.:23:57.

Thomas is a good man, he has been in her corner for a good long time now.

:23:58.:24:03.

Since she was a junior. She seemed quite disgruntled at that change of

:24:04.:24:04.

ends, Radwanska. It's interesting that Radwanska even

:24:05.:24:36.

called him on to court, because it's not something you see often. She is

:24:37.:24:44.

not really one for on court chatting. Yes, she's a wonderful

:24:45.:24:51.

tactician, she works it out herself. I just wonder if she is being a

:24:52.:24:56.

little more insecure than normal eco-she lost in her opening match in

:24:57.:25:08.

Birmingham last week Ek -- to Coco Vandeweghe and base doesn't feel

:25:09.:25:11.

completely settled with the type of play she is facing. -- perhaps

:25:12.:25:19.

doesn't feel completely settled. She isn't getting rid getting stuck into

:25:20.:25:24.

this match despite winning this first set. That is kind of the issue

:25:25.:25:29.

whenever you up against somebody like she doesn't give you any

:25:30.:25:33.

rhythm, as you have to go with the flow and put those balls back into

:25:34.:25:35.

play. Won't want Lucic-Baroni is to get

:25:36.:26:07.

away here. It's the age-old problem, how do you

:26:08.:27:04.

hit through or past Radwanska? Good movement there from

:27:05.:27:29.

Lucic-Baroni. The control, too. -- good control,

:27:30.:27:38.

too. And maybe that is why she was so

:27:39.:28:05.

worried at the end of that first set. Really feels the threat from

:28:06.:28:11.

Lucic-Baroni. Can you follow her, please? She has just run off court.

:28:12.:28:23.

Mrs Lucic-Baroni just went to the bathroom. That is not a good sign.

:28:24.:28:30.

I'm surprised she didn't go at the end of the first set. Unscheduled

:28:31.:28:37.

bathroom break. I'm not sure about the stats, five unforced errors from

:28:38.:28:42.

Lucic-Baroni? It felt like she was in double figures in the opening

:28:43.:28:46.

set. And Radwanska doing a decent job on serve. Not venturing to the

:28:47.:28:55.

net too often. Hasn't had too many opportunities because it has been a

:28:56.:28:59.

winner or an error for the most part from Lucic-Baroni.

:29:00.:29:15.

Radwanska rather hopefully walking out to receive serve, no sign of

:29:16.:29:28.

Lucic-Baroni as yet. I hope she is all right, actually. Had the doctor

:29:29.:29:34.

out midway through that first set. But Radwanska doing the right thing.

:29:35.:29:39.

It is so easy to sit in your chair and not do a lot. You've got to keep

:29:40.:29:47.

moving. She is back. She seems all right, I she is.

:29:48.:29:53.

And she might want to remember after a terrible start to the first set,

:29:54.:29:59.

she is up a break early on in the second.

:30:00.:30:33.

Well, if you look at what has been happening in the last 20 minutes or

:30:34.:31:55.

so, since Radwanska pinched that opening set, it has been

:31:56.:31:57.

Lucic-Baroni dominating the points. sometimes she can look a little

:31:58.:33:02.

untidy with her footwork. Almost 6-foot. Not too many players

:33:03.:33:09.

confessed to being 6-foot, they are always five foot 11. Oh, but great

:33:10.:33:14.

levers. Advantage Mrs Lucic-Baroni. That was sloppy footwork, right

:33:15.:33:46.

there. Planted far too early, waited for the ball to come onto her

:33:47.:33:52.

racket. Square on. You can't do that in the grass court season because

:33:53.:33:56.

the ball takes so many last-minute dives.

:33:57.:34:06.

And all of a sudden, the former champion and finalist here last year

:34:07.:34:13.

has a chance to wrestle back some control in this match.

:34:14.:34:29.

And that is a real shame. The early break. She looks really despondent.

:34:30.:34:44.

She is clearly not feeling her best out there, having had the doctor on.

:34:45.:34:52.

But actually, playing pretty well. Despite everything. Just in a body

:34:53.:34:54.

language, not quite there. She took all the pace of this folly.

:34:55.:36:22.

Great feel. She has all the shots, and she has had quite enough of

:36:23.:36:26.

being pummelled from the back of the court by Lucic-Baroni.

:36:27.:36:56.

Just a little too heavy. More mistakes from the southern end with

:36:57.:37:06.

the wind behind her. You are right, despite the fact she is playing

:37:07.:37:10.

well, just the fact that she is not feeling great is getting in the way.

:37:11.:37:25.

Yes, come on says Agnes guff. Shaking her head, Lucic-Baroni. --

:37:26.:37:44.

ladies and gentlemen, Mrs Lucic-Baroni had to retire. We don't

:37:45.:37:53.

often see that. That is a real shame for her. She came up from a

:37:54.:37:56.

qualifying match and is clearly playing well but she must be feeling

:37:57.:38:01.

absolutely terrible. She is a fighter. To retire, clearly she is

:38:02.:38:08.

not feeling great, but it is a shame because she was not playing back

:38:09.:38:12.

tennis. You called it, you just said, and you don't often see it,

:38:13.:38:17.

players often take their bathroom breaks at the end of a set, so we

:38:18.:38:21.

can only speculate at what might have happened as she dashed off. Oh,

:38:22.:38:29.

dear. Well, she has had a few grass court matches going into Wimbledon.

:38:30.:38:33.

She will be dangerous, capable of beating the big names. And Radwanska

:38:34.:38:39.

might be heading for the practice courts. Our next match on Centre

:38:40.:38:52.

Court features Johanna Konta. We can have a look at the numbers, and

:38:53.:38:57.

reappear curiously at them, I think they are coming along, any second

:38:58.:39:07.

now... Well, there you can see Radwanska rock-solid on serve. I

:39:08.:39:13.

first serve percentage. Second serve, as well. Neither player

:39:14.:39:18.

venturing forward to much. But Radwanska capitalising on all those

:39:19.:39:23.

break point opportunities. Never too many errors but never too many

:39:24.:39:27.

winners from Radwanska, ever. She did enough but strange way to go

:39:28.:39:35.

through. Let's hear from her. Not the way you want to go through, but

:39:36.:39:39.

how do you assess the way you are playing. It was a tough match. She

:39:40.:39:45.

was playing really good tennis even when something happened to her

:39:46.:39:50.

today. I am very happy that I could play some good games but hopefully

:39:51.:39:55.

she will get better soon and she will play some good tennis at one.

:39:56.:40:00.

Grass has always been a good service for you. You have done well at

:40:01.:40:06.

Wimbledon and won the title here. How do you feel on these calls? I

:40:07.:40:11.

always feel great, I am happy to be for the 10th time so thank you for

:40:12.:40:17.

coming and see you tomorrow! Ladies and gentlemen, Agnieszka Radwanska!

:40:18.:40:27.

Obviously hugely disappointing for Lucic-Baroni, but bigger fish to fry

:40:28.:40:31.

for her and she will want to be in optimum form for women. Radwanska

:40:32.:40:34.

safely through and somebody else safely through is, well she was

:40:35.:40:40.

going to be the next big thing a couple of years ago. But the shard

:40:41.:40:44.

of Canada has had all sorts of issues of course, coloured Eugenie

:40:45.:40:53.

Bouchard, came through against Irina Kennelly and they do of Romania. --

:40:54.:41:05.

Irina Camellia bedroom, and this pair of us as a London was beaten by

:41:06.:41:12.

Kristina Mladenovic of France. So that's a browser that we so

:41:13.:41:18.

accustomed to on the clay of the Paris open is making a successful

:41:19.:41:23.

reappearance here on the grass of Eastbourne. The zebra is not extinct

:41:24.:41:27.

in Sussex. Other results to give you...

:41:28.:41:42.

Tsurenko will be the next opponent for a British player.

:41:43.:42:12.

Some second-round scores to give you...

:42:13.:42:47.

The next match we are going to see will feature the British number one,

:42:48.:42:53.

Joe Konta, who this time last year was sitting alongside us here in our

:42:54.:42:55.

little presentation booth and she was ranked 100 something in the

:42:56.:43:01.

world and money people had heard of her and suddenly her world is turned

:43:02.:43:05.

upside down and she is now going to be seeded at Wimbledon next week,

:43:06.:43:09.

the first woman to be seeded at Wimbledon for three decades and she

:43:10.:43:11.

really is someone who the other players on the tour are having to

:43:12.:43:15.

look out for. Yesterday, when it was pouring with rain, she spoke to Sam

:43:16.:43:17.

Smith. Jo, welcome back to Eastbourne. What

:43:18.:43:30.

was it like walking through the gates with a huge poster in front of

:43:31.:43:35.

you and coming back as a seed and a top 20 player? I did a double-take.

:43:36.:43:43.

I was like, "Oh, is that me?" . It was quite an imposing poster. I'm

:43:44.:43:48.

happy to be here. I get to go home and spent time with my family. And I

:43:49.:43:55.

get support in the lead at so that's the main thing. A lot has changed

:43:56.:44:00.

for you in a year, particularly with that wonderful run to the Australian

:44:01.:44:03.

open semifinals in January. Do you feel life has changed in terms of

:44:04.:44:11.

status, fame? Not really. On paper, it definitely does look different,

:44:12.:44:15.

my ranking, this year, compared to last year. How is it coping with the

:44:16.:44:20.

change in status, the workload? Has it come from yourself or compromise

:44:21.:44:23.

outside advice and help from people around you? The biggest thing is

:44:24.:44:29.

that I don't judge myself on my ranking all my results. My

:44:30.:44:34.

self-respect towards myself very much comes from my work ethic, how I

:44:35.:44:40.

approach the work every single day, so as long as that stays very clear

:44:41.:44:45.

and clean, I think I'm better equipped to really handle whatever

:44:46.:44:49.

happens. You that's only great results on hard courts. How well do

:44:50.:44:55.

you feel your game fits to grass? Obviously, what happened after the

:44:56.:44:58.

grass season here last year, my best results were at these events up

:44:59.:45:03.

until that point, so I think it's all relative and we'll see how it

:45:04.:45:10.

goes. I definitely don't think that last year's result is any reflection

:45:11.:45:16.

on how I will do this year. It is a New Year, new tournament, but I'm

:45:17.:45:19.

just really happy to be a part of it.

:45:20.:45:25.

Jo Konta and here is this huge poster of her that she was talking

:45:26.:45:28.

about it what a difference a year makes and her year will end with the

:45:29.:45:33.

US open but before the US open, she has a date in South America because

:45:34.:45:36.

Jo is going to be heading out to the Olympic Games.

:45:37.:45:54.

Jessica Ennis-Hill is back on top of the world. Nicola Adams has just

:45:55.:46:06.

made history. That's a huge jump! Laura Trott, world champion!

:46:07.:46:14.

40-something days and counting. Anne Keothavong has popped back from the

:46:15.:46:18.

commentary box. Whatley or collections of the picks? My best

:46:19.:46:23.

moment. -- what are your recollection of the Olympics? It was

:46:24.:46:30.

huge for me to be part of the Olympics for London 2012. My first

:46:31.:46:34.

and only the picks and it was on home soil. Did you stay in the

:46:35.:46:38.

Olympic village? We did for a few nights before the tournament started

:46:39.:46:41.

but all of us British players who won the team have a place in

:46:42.:46:44.

south-west London, so I actually stayed in my own flat. In hindsight,

:46:45.:46:49.

do you wish you hadn't stayed at home? Do you wish you'd just totally

:46:50.:46:53.

embraced it and be on the other big village for the whole time? -- been

:46:54.:47:01.

in the Olympic Village. Stratford is where I grew up. But you didn't grow

:47:02.:47:05.

up surrounded by 20,000 Kenyan athletes. There is a part of me that

:47:06.:47:11.

feels like I missed out on the Olympic experience at the other part

:47:12.:47:14.

of me knows that it wouldn't have made sense to stay in Stratford and

:47:15.:47:19.

be competing in Wimbledon, knowing the commute and knowing what it was

:47:20.:47:23.

like at that time of the year. The Central line is a killer! Do you

:47:24.:47:29.

think for someone like Serena, where do you think an Olympic gold bundle

:47:30.:47:32.

sits for her in her list of triumphs? -- gold medal. I think it

:47:33.:47:38.

is right up there. She puts herself on the line at the Olympics every

:47:39.:47:41.

time. What is this going to be, her fifth Olympic Games? And with Venus

:47:42.:47:46.

as well, teaming up to win gold in the doubles, it's a big thing for

:47:47.:47:51.

the Williams sisters. I know her big thing, though, the grand slam

:47:52.:47:54.

titles, but I'm pretty sure she would put the Olympic gold medal at

:47:55.:47:59.

there. Gulf is the Olympics for the first time this year and there are a

:48:00.:48:02.

lot of people who think that is a bit of nonsense, and there are still

:48:03.:48:05.

some people who aren't convinced about tennis's place against. What

:48:06.:48:10.

is a attitude to that? I sit in the middle here. I don't think tennis

:48:11.:48:16.

should be part of the Olympics. I don't think it's really an Olympic

:48:17.:48:22.

sport. It is a professional sport that's played right from the start

:48:23.:48:27.

of the year until October, November. It's not like the other track and

:48:28.:48:31.

field, swimming, where you get your moment in the spotlight once every

:48:32.:48:35.

four years. As a tennis player, you get to experience those type of

:48:36.:48:39.

feelings we can, week out and at the grand slams four times a year. I

:48:40.:48:43.

think the Olympics is very special but already you can see a number of

:48:44.:48:47.

top players, more on the men's side, have opted out on the Olympics and

:48:48.:48:54.

have chosen not to go to Rio. It is interesting. Kyrgios and tonic

:48:55.:48:58.

amongst others, who are now being accused of betraying the Australian

:48:59.:49:02.

Olympic ethic by not wanting to go to the games so it depends on which

:49:03.:49:06.

side of the fence you sit. You don't see... Our English footballers would

:49:07.:49:10.

be out there, the top guys will be competing at the Olympics. We don't

:49:11.:49:13.

see our rugby team at the Olympics. I don't think Gulf should be at the

:49:14.:49:16.

Olympics in the same way that tennis shouldn't. Each to their own but at

:49:17.:49:21.

the same time, I'm glad to have experienced that and I can still say

:49:22.:49:24.

I'm an Olympian. You can say that for evermore! Just going back to Jo

:49:25.:49:30.

Konta, who has a first-round match against a player who has played a

:49:31.:49:34.

match already today. How difficult will not be for her opponent? Well,

:49:35.:49:39.

it was based great sets victory for Lucy Tsurenko so she will be feeling

:49:40.:49:43.

good about herself. It wasn't physically too taxing for her and I

:49:44.:49:47.

think it is going to be a tricky one for Joe, to be cleverly honest. Jo

:49:48.:49:57.

is a completely different player to what she was back then. The thing

:49:58.:50:04.

about Jo is that 12 months ago, the border said Jo Konta? She might get

:50:05.:50:10.

through around, and now it is Jo Konta, she's going to be in the

:50:11.:50:16.

quarters at the least. And she doesn't get the quarters, it will

:50:17.:50:19.

seem that she has failed, which is ridiculous because she hasn't. Still

:50:20.:50:28.

got a lot to go. Tsurenko will be a tough opponent. I bumped into Jo's

:50:29.:50:33.

parents on the way here, who were a bit apprehensive, given their

:50:34.:50:36.

head-to-head record. Do they walk in? They live just down the road.

:50:37.:50:40.

I'm sure they would have walked it. It would have been far too lazy to

:50:41.:50:43.

have driven! We are at Queens on Sunday. We had 4 million people

:50:44.:50:49.

watching tennis on a Sunday afternoon on BBC One, which is a

:50:50.:50:52.

fantastic audience, given everything else. The weather was quite nice and

:50:53.:50:57.

all the football. Huge audience, a testament to a great event and a

:50:58.:51:02.

fantastic match but also annexed Audrey performance from Andy Murray

:51:03.:51:05.

who, having lost the first set to Milos Raonic, blades are extremely

:51:06.:51:09.

tennis. It wasn't just that he'd won the match, it was the manner in

:51:10.:51:15.

which he won it. You are seeing now almost a complete player. To come

:51:16.:51:21.

back from a set down against Raonic, Lendl back in his box... Everyone

:51:22.:51:32.

seems to be going on about him. Andy Murray I think is our greatest ever

:51:33.:51:36.

athlete. I'm with you on that. Of all the people that we have playing

:51:37.:51:39.

on the international sporting stayed at the moment, whatever sport it

:51:40.:51:45.

might be, he, I think has to be the number one because of who he is

:51:46.:51:53.

competing against and we can, week out, he... We will miss him. When he

:51:54.:51:57.

got his racket down, we will think, why didn't we get behind him of it

:51:58.:52:01.

more? The British public have embraced a more so than they did in

:52:02.:52:04.

previous years but they could do even more to see is the best we've

:52:05.:52:08.

had in a long time. What is your first memory of beating Andy? I

:52:09.:52:12.

couldn't tell you. Probably when he was a young teenager, I would like

:52:13.:52:17.

to say he was a brat but I don't think he was! Was he cracking jokes

:52:18.:52:24.

every five and its? Actually, Judy took me away when I was 13 on an

:52:25.:52:29.

international trip so my memories of the Murray boys were whatever she

:52:30.:52:33.

spoke to us about and I think it was probably the issues she had

:52:34.:52:36.

controlling his temper and his behaviour on the court, which was

:52:37.:52:41.

notorious, even when he was a kid. And very different to Jamie, who I

:52:42.:52:47.

assume was happy-go-lucky. They are completely different personalities,

:52:48.:52:51.

more so now, but Andy, away from the tennis court, that persona he puts

:52:52.:52:55.

out on the court, he couldn't be any more different. He's lovely, very

:52:56.:52:59.

down-to-earth, very friendly, very easy to get along with. When he was

:53:00.:53:06.

that age, where people saying, when he was 15, 16, "Watching, he's going

:53:07.:53:11.

to go a long way"? I believe so. He was one of the top juniors in the

:53:12.:53:14.

world and have achieved so much already. Nobody would have expected

:53:15.:53:19.

what he would go on to achieve and to lift a Wimbledon trophy, it's

:53:20.:53:23.

something special and something I'm not sure we'll see again in our

:53:24.:53:28.

lifetime, a British player lifting that Wimbledon trophy, someone other

:53:29.:53:32.

than Andy Murray. I don't know. Talking about being a junior, and he

:53:33.:53:37.

was a top junior, Petra Kvitova was up here a few moments ago and I'm on

:53:38.:53:41.

to ask her and I forgot, she was nowhere as a junior, barely got into

:53:42.:53:47.

the world's top 30, and is now double grand slam winner, and if you

:53:48.:53:49.

look at her contemporaries as juniors, most of them, I of the

:53:50.:53:54.

names and I thought, I'd almost never heard of those people, they

:53:55.:53:58.

just disappeared off the face of the. Why does that happen? One of

:53:59.:54:03.

the reasons for Petra Kvitova not being outstanding as a junior was

:54:04.:54:07.

she was in the Czech Republic but she did not play a lot of junior

:54:08.:54:10.

international events. I remember when she played one of her first ITF

:54:11.:54:17.

events because it was in the Czech Republic and it was a tournament I

:54:18.:54:20.

was in and I remember seeing this 16-year-old wild card smacking the

:54:21.:54:25.

ball so hard. She went out in the first round to my doubles partner

:54:26.:54:30.

that week but you just thought, "Oh, my goodness, this girl hits the ball

:54:31.:54:34.

so hard, she is going to go a long way". It was so long ago but curb

:54:35.:54:42.

was in the draw that week as well. Only people beginning with Kerry

:54:43.:54:47.

were allowed to be in it! It was a limited draw. Seeing her play as a

:54:48.:54:53.

16-year-old, having those huge weapons, was incredible, but nobody

:54:54.:54:58.

would have predicted she would go on to win two grand slam titles at

:54:59.:55:02.

Wimbledon and she could still win plenty more. She's a left-hander tit

:55:03.:55:07.

up there is an interesting article in the official programme about the

:55:08.:55:14.

advantages. It is a column, an opinion piece, about how almost

:55:15.:55:19.

unfair it is in tennis to be left-handed because of the advantage

:55:20.:55:23.

it gives you because less than 10% of the players who play tennis are

:55:24.:55:26.

left-handed so if you are a right-hander, you get so little

:55:27.:55:30.

practice against them, pro rata, against right-handed players, but

:55:31.:55:34.

sometimes when you are playing right-handed, you are sometimes

:55:35.:55:36.

taken aback and as a consequence of that, if you want to really make it

:55:37.:55:40.

in sport and you are left-handed, tennis is the sport you ought to go

:55:41.:55:43.

into because you've got an unfair advantage before you even start. Now

:55:44.:55:48.

you tell me! That's obviously where I went wrong! People always talk

:55:49.:55:54.

about, especially from the vantage court, that left-handed serve, the

:55:55.:55:59.

angle that it gets. The right hand does not have the same going the

:56:00.:56:04.

other way. No, for some reason a right-hander heading on the due

:56:05.:56:07.

score doesn't have the same effect. It's just not as good and as lethal

:56:08.:56:11.

as a left-handed player serving from the other court. I don't know why it

:56:12.:56:16.

shouldn't be. I've always felt left-handed players also have more

:56:17.:56:22.

natural feel on their shots than right-handed players but that could

:56:23.:56:25.

just be meted We are chatting away here but we are going to have some

:56:26.:56:29.

live tennis in just a moment or so because Jo Konta and her opponent

:56:30.:56:33.

from Ukraine will be on court very shortly. It is a lovely afternoon

:56:34.:56:38.

now for playing tennis and also for actually watching it, especially on

:56:39.:56:42.

Centre Court. Last year, my recollection of Eastbourne was that

:56:43.:56:46.

it was a bit mix and match as far as the weather was concerned and there

:56:47.:56:50.

were sometimes when you wanted a fleece and a woolly jumper out there

:56:51.:56:53.

to watch it. Today it is really nice and they've been playing Chris of a

:56:54.:56:58.

cross's Ride Like The Wind to get people feeling like it really is a

:56:59.:57:03.

summer over the tannoy. This is how this section of the draw looks at

:57:04.:57:10.

the moment. Radwanska against Bouchard is a good game for tomorrow

:57:11.:57:13.

and a good game for Bouchard after the last couple of years under the

:57:14.:57:17.

microscope, her ranking falling and people asking what happened to this

:57:18.:57:21.

great new star that was going today the game by storm. It didn't really

:57:22.:57:24.

happen but a really good run again at Eastbourne might get people

:57:25.:57:26.

thinking that she might be on the way back.

:57:27.:57:35.

We could have a good all Italian affair. Here comes Jo Konta's

:57:36.:58:11.

opponent for the afternoon and she had a very good winter day in

:58:12.:58:16.

straight sets against Shuai Zhang of China, Lesia Tsurenko. She is 27

:58:17.:58:21.

years old so she has been around for a while. And here is someone else

:58:22.:58:27.

who has been around for a while but never quite to a reception like this

:58:28.:58:33.

at Eastbourne. And the key thing, of course, is to embrace it, to enjoy

:58:34.:58:38.

it. Enjoyed it, yeah, and I think that's the hardest thing to do when

:58:39.:58:42.

you're desperate to do so well, desperate to perform in front of

:58:43.:58:49.

your home crowd. I suppose the key thing... Oh, she's walked on court

:58:50.:58:53.

and she's forgotten something. I knew I should have brought a rocket

:58:54.:58:57.

with meted top but in days gone by, if you are banished to... If you are

:58:58.:59:02.

at Wimbledon, you're playing on court 13. It is a very different

:59:03.:59:06.

experience to being on Centre Court but you can almost guarantee,

:59:07.:59:10.

providing it is an opponent of some stature, Jo Konta's first match next

:59:11.:59:14.

week is going to be on Centre Court at Wimbledon and suddenly it is

:59:15.:59:17.

like, show us what you've got. You'd hope so. Last year she played a

:59:18.:59:22.

first-round match out on Centre Court and was up against Maria

:59:23.:59:26.

Sharapova. She's been there, done it, knows what it feels like, but

:59:27.:59:31.

this time round, it will be, I guess, roles reversed, everyone

:59:32.:59:36.

expecting Konta to win the match as opposed to her opponent. This is

:59:37.:59:42.

interesting. What has she walked on court without? Have you ever walked

:59:43.:59:46.

on court without something? Like, why have I only got one shoe on?

:59:47.:59:50.

I've walked on court in my running shoes and of my tennis shoes before.

:59:51.:59:56.

As the umpire toss the coin, I thought I ought to change my shoes!

:59:57.:00:01.

I'm not too sure what's going on here but you see these huge tennis

:00:02.:00:06.

bags the players carry around, which weigh an absolute tonne. They seen

:00:07.:00:08.

to have everything in those tennis bags so I'm not quite sure what she

:00:09.:00:12.

seems to have forgotten, unless you just need the loo, last-minute

:00:13.:00:19.

nerves. -- she just needs. She might have some instructions that she

:00:20.:00:22.

keeps surreptitiously hidden in her bag but she doesn't need to hide

:00:23.:00:25.

them because on the women's tour, you can actually get the coaches

:00:26.:00:28.

down to talk to you at various points in the game if things aren't

:00:29.:00:32.

going well. Anyway, are very summery outfit on a summer's afternoon,

:00:33.:00:37.

albeit a little bit patchy. When you walked across from the commentary

:00:38.:00:40.

box to hear, how much of an impact is that having on the game, the

:00:41.:00:45.

wind? Roll huge. Here in Eastbourne, the wind swirls around Centre Court

:00:46.:00:51.

It is expected. You expect wind. You come to Eastbourne and don't expect

:00:52.:00:57.

perfect conditions. It will be something Jo is used to. Presumably

:00:58.:01:04.

when she lives here, does she come and practice here or is there an

:01:05.:01:06.

indoor centre down the road which she uses? Jo, when she's in the UK,

:01:07.:01:14.

practices at national tennis centre most of the time. That is where she

:01:15.:01:20.

will do most of her heading. -- hitting. She must come here

:01:21.:01:30.

occasionally. Her parents lived nearby and are huge supporters of

:01:31.:01:37.

her tennis. When you think about the peripatetic life that she's had,

:01:38.:01:41.

being born in Australia, Hungary and parents, coming to this country, in

:01:42.:01:46.

that kind of environment, it would be very easy to not actually end up

:01:47.:01:49.

focusing on something because your life just takes you here, there and

:01:50.:01:53.

everywhere but all the while, there has been an immense support base for

:01:54.:01:59.

the. ... Yes, and her parents follow her tennis very closely. I remember

:02:00.:02:08.

practising with Jo over the years and her mum or dad or whoever are at

:02:09.:02:13.

the back of the court, chipping in, trying to advise her here and there,

:02:14.:02:18.

getting involved with her tennis. That could be good and bad. Good and

:02:19.:02:23.

bad, and she knows how to manage it herself, better than anyone else,

:02:24.:02:26.

but I know she has a very close relationship with her mum and dad

:02:27.:02:31.

and each to their own. Be honest here, because I remember when it

:02:32.:02:36.

happened with Aljaz Bedene in the last couple of years, when I saw on

:02:37.:02:44.

the BBC website, another player from whatever background, Wenzhou

:02:45.:02:50.

appeared, were there some members of the British tennis set to thought,

:02:51.:02:54.

what is all this about? -- when Jo appeared. But she, as a teenager,

:02:55.:03:02.

based herself in the UK with her parents. The LTA bagged her before

:03:03.:03:10.

she got her British passport so she was always around. I remember

:03:11.:03:13.

practising with Jo for years and even before she got her British

:03:14.:03:20.

passport... You just get on with it. There will have been a few people...

:03:21.:03:24.

Especially people who have their noses put out of joint, who go from

:03:25.:03:28.

being number four and five to number five and six. It makes a difference

:03:29.:03:33.

but she's showing what she can do and I think everyone supports her

:03:34.:03:37.

now. It's going to be very exciting next week. Lets hope she has a good

:03:38.:03:42.

run here because if she can go into Wimbledon in a good run of form, it

:03:43.:03:46.

adds an extra dimensional to Wimbledon next week. It doesn't just

:03:47.:03:50.

become the Murray show, it becomes Jo getting through to the second

:03:51.:03:52.

week and who knows what happens after that. Who knows what can

:03:53.:03:58.

happen? We saw it at the Australian Open and I think a result there

:03:59.:04:01.

together on by surprise. The French Open didn't go her way but we've got

:04:02.:04:09.

a female player who is capable of beating those top players, capable

:04:10.:04:11.

of being involved in the second week of a slam, and it's something to get

:04:12.:04:17.

excited about and hopefully Jo will embrace it, Jo will enjoy it and

:04:18.:04:22.

live up to expectations. Absolutely. The knock up this taking place so

:04:23.:04:28.

we'll let Anne Keothavong had up to the commentary box. You are working

:04:29.:04:31.

overtime today! I'm getting my work-out! Let's have a chat with Sam

:04:32.:04:37.

Smith, who is up in our commentary box. Sam, two years ago, if we'd

:04:38.:04:44.

said Jo Konta was going to be a Grand Slam semifinalist and a top 20

:04:45.:04:47.

player in the world, would you have said, you've got to be joking? I

:04:48.:04:52.

don't the guy would've been quite bad as respectful but I think most

:04:53.:04:55.

people would have said, we are not seeing that, because just because of

:04:56.:05:00.

her results. Throughout her early 20s she was a good junior, not

:05:01.:05:04.

outstanding, and she was a player that could win a match or two in

:05:05.:05:08.

slams, having come through the qualifying, but she seemed to be in

:05:09.:05:11.

this awful place in the rankings, veering between 140 and 90, which is

:05:12.:05:17.

impossible to schedule, and she looked stuck there, and when I

:05:18.:05:21.

watched her play at the US Open a few years ago, she nearly made it

:05:22.:05:24.

through to the third round, played fabulously well. I thought her

:05:25.:05:28.

format was always going to hold her back and the fact that she just

:05:29.:05:32.

seemed to get very uptight and nervous. And over the last 12

:05:33.:05:37.

months, she's conquered that. Forehand is unrecognisable from what

:05:38.:05:44.

it was. Her fitness has improved dramatically. I've always thought

:05:45.:05:47.

she is a really good and strong athlete and mentally, she's put in

:05:48.:05:50.

so much work, so I think we're seeing a totally different player.

:05:51.:05:54.

Unless you had a crystal ball, I don't think you would've thought she

:05:55.:05:58.

would be in the position she is now. And I wonder how she processes it

:05:59.:06:01.

because it is a big change in status. For that don't have

:06:02.:06:06.

happened, did that require a big jump in mindset for her? Maybe I've

:06:07.:06:10.

got to work a bit harder certain aspects of my game? I don't the

:06:11.:06:14.

gritters mindset at all because I ball was felt that she has carried

:06:15.:06:18.

herself like a top player, super disciplined, so meticulous and when

:06:19.:06:23.

you are struggling, because it is a struggle around that ranking,

:06:24.:06:27.

sometimes you are in the main draw, you are in satellites, it is not the

:06:28.:06:32.

most grammar is like. -- glamorous life. You think, is it really all

:06:33.:06:37.

worth it, being this disciplined, this particular is about everything?

:06:38.:06:42.

Jo has carried on as if it was always going to be, she was always

:06:43.:06:46.

going to have a different tennis life, and I think that has been one

:06:47.:06:49.

of the most important thing is, along with training in Spain. I

:06:50.:06:54.

think that's been great for her. Her application has been of someone that

:06:55.:06:58.

has top-10 potential. She is back disciplined, that hard-working.

:06:59.:07:03.

Hywel Key to this rise up the rankings was last year? When you

:07:04.:07:15.

beat Ekaterina Makarova and another player, which is a victory that

:07:16.:07:17.

improves with age, you build a lot of confidence and it is great with

:07:18.:07:23.

hindsight top Bob she went on and won a couple of challenges in

:07:24.:07:26.

Canada, had a great run at the US Open, so it looks like it was very

:07:27.:07:31.

important. Only she will know what it meant to her but I can't think it

:07:32.:07:35.

was insignificant because it seems to be a real marker in the career of

:07:36.:07:41.

Jo Konta. We can pontificate until we are blue in the face and

:07:42.:07:47.

sometimes we have to, about what is significant and what isn't but as a

:07:48.:07:51.

player, you can offer platitudes the whole time about, I genuinely

:07:52.:07:59.

believe I can do this, but until you can actually do it, you don't know

:08:00.:08:04.

if you can do it on beating Muguruza last year was a moment when you

:08:05.:08:08.

thought, I've heard of her and she's beaten her well and suddenly things

:08:09.:08:11.

just change of interview to talk Things happen very quickly. She's

:08:12.:08:16.

got a tough match here. I watched Tsurenko in her first round this

:08:17.:08:19.

morning, hitting the ball fabulously well. Well, Sam is on her own for a

:08:20.:08:27.

moment but Anne Keothavong will get there shortly. The British number

:08:28.:08:29.

one in action today. COMMENTATOR: Lesia Tsurenko ranked

:08:30.:08:42.

at 42 in the world, beat Shannon Schweiger of China a few hours ago

:08:43.:08:44.

now. She hasn't had the best of years.

:08:45.:08:58.

She went upfront just outside the world's top 100 to just inside the

:08:59.:09:02.

world's top 30 and has struggled for victories on tour this year.

:09:03.:09:29.

Tsurenko is a player that has improved her fitness quite

:09:30.:09:35.

dramatically over the last few seasons but whenever we commented on

:09:36.:09:38.

her matches, the one thing you have to always mention, and it really

:09:39.:09:42.

stands out, if she only really took tennis seriously at age 17. Started

:09:43.:09:51.

to play mainly for fun, between 14 and 17, but only really applied

:09:52.:09:56.

herself in her late teens. This is extraordinary.

:09:57.:10:51.

Well-known for having a fabulous backhand. Sometimes struggles to

:10:52.:10:57.

generate her own pace and can sit deep behind the baseline but has a

:10:58.:10:59.

fine game overall. And that is the side that Konta

:11:00.:11:22.

should be targeting. That is her forehand that on her bad days can be

:11:23.:11:26.

erratic. Konta would love to break here.

:11:27.:12:06.

Altec smack correction. -- out. Correction. A correction and it did

:12:07.:12:26.

look good at first look. An ideal opening game on this first

:12:27.:12:43.

game for Lesia Tsurenko. And any, you should go back on the court, you

:12:44.:12:48.

are covering the ground with such grace and swiftness! You sound so

:12:49.:12:56.

impressed. Totally. I would take double the time. But Tsurenko, we

:12:57.:13:01.

will watching her this morning at 11am and she looked to be striking

:13:02.:13:07.

the ball really well. She was. She got herself into a good position and

:13:08.:13:12.

struggled to close it out in the second set. She was 6-1, 5-2 up. But

:13:13.:13:19.

she managed to close out the second set in a tie-break. She can get a

:13:20.:13:21.

little tight. these two have met on one previous

:13:22.:14:15.

occasion, three years ago. But at the start of that year, Tsurenko

:14:16.:14:21.

winning 7-5 in the deciding set and went on to have a really great run

:14:22.:14:27.

that week. They did play against each other last year in Fed cup as

:14:28.:14:34.

well. In Budapest. Tsurenko the winner there in straight sets. So

:14:35.:14:41.

this is a tricky matchup for Konta even though she is ranked 18 in the

:14:42.:14:47.

world. And the 11th seed here in Eastbourne.

:14:48.:15:31.

One of two Spanish coaches employed by Jo.

:15:32.:15:47.

An important game for Konta. Both women safely aboard in the second

:15:48.:15:59.

round match. The winner will play Petra Kvitova who won first up on

:16:00.:16:06.

Centre Court today. A very tough draw, wherever you look.

:16:07.:16:55.

Oh, beautifully done. She made that look a lot easier than it was. When

:16:56.:17:06.

I watch her play, maybe it is the backhand, she reminds me, maybe

:17:07.:17:12.

looks like her as well, but reminds me of Elena Vesnina, champion here a

:17:13.:17:17.

few years ago. You're not seeing it, are you, Annie?

:17:18.:17:31.

There are similarities in the way they look but she hit the ball very

:17:32.:17:43.

flat. As he you mean. Help me out here, Annie. Vesnina without the

:17:44.:17:52.

grant. Yes, she is very quiet, Lesia.

:17:53.:18:09.

What has Jo got to watch out for? The Tsurenko backhand? Also,

:18:10.:18:17.

Tsurenko moves well around the court.

:18:18.:18:31.

And her first serve should not be underestimated.

:18:32.:18:52.

Good shot from Konta. Stay down low. It threw the ball. -- stayed through

:18:53.:19:01.

the ball. A good hold from the Ukrainian. And

:19:02.:19:35.

looking comfortable. Her debut here at Eastbourne and on the Centre

:19:36.:19:40.

Court. She had a great year last year, almost ranked outside the top

:19:41.:19:47.

30 after being ranked just inside the top 100 at the start of the

:19:48.:19:50.

year. What has made the difference with her? 'S belief. For some

:19:51.:19:56.

delight to rank, she has been on tour for a number of years. I like

:19:57.:20:01.

the way she is tucking her racket up, like she's putting them to bed!

:20:02.:20:08.

Very odd, I've never seen a player do that. But you don't want too much

:20:09.:20:15.

sun on your racket. I thought they were also a statically sealed right

:20:16.:20:20.

now or am I thinking there is more technology than there really is? Oh,

:20:21.:20:25.

it's being touted by the umpire, being put to bed! Looks comfortable

:20:26.:20:31.

there, doesn't it? I guess that is one way to look after your rackets.

:20:32.:20:37.

A bit extreme. But what was the improvement all about last year,

:20:38.:20:43.

because she's 27 now? I think it is belief, more than anything. For any

:20:44.:20:48.

player. She has been out on tour for a number of years. I think she was

:20:49.:20:53.

just able to back herself. The tennis has always been there. She is

:20:54.:20:58.

in better shape than she used to be these days. She is much fitter and

:20:59.:21:03.

quicker around the court. That has been a big improvement. She backs

:21:04.:21:06.

herself. I think that is key. You know, when you put yourself on

:21:07.:21:37.

the line and compete week in, week out, get used to players around you,

:21:38.:21:41.

you feel like you belong and you start playing like you belong.

:21:42.:21:47.

Konta had such a good year last year, with big wins before losing to

:21:48.:22:02.

Belinda Bencic, the eventual champion, in the quarterfinals,

:22:03.:22:02.

having taken the first set. Yes, right on the line! This is

:22:03.:22:35.

going to be a difficult encounter and I wonder where Jo's confidence

:22:36.:22:41.

is? It has not been a particularly good grass court season for her.

:22:42.:22:46.

Second round exit in Nottingham and in Birmingham and also first round

:22:47.:22:53.

at Roland Garros, where she left to a player to you we were surprised

:22:54.:22:57.

she lost. Just needs to get back to winning ways. -- to whom we were

:22:58.:23:03.

surprised. Quite a clever shot there from

:23:04.:24:00.

Tsurenko, took all the pace of it. Got the ball to dip low. Tsurenko

:24:01.:24:10.

looking rather at home here, this is posing a few problems and Konta

:24:11.:24:13.

having to face break point. These two had very different days

:24:14.:24:46.

yesterday. Tsurenko very much watching the rain, hoping to get on

:24:47.:24:52.

court. Konta, a lot of media commitments.

:24:53.:25:33.

Come on! The fitness trainer to the left of your picture, Konta's coach.

:25:34.:25:52.

She used to do a lot of work with you. Yes.

:25:53.:26:17.

Really tense opening four games. Konta doing very well to hold there.

:26:18.:26:33.

Well, it's an afternoon that is lovely and sunny at Eastbourne but

:26:34.:26:37.

it is time for the industrial strength hairspray, they are playing

:26:38.:26:40.

enabling the tunnel at the moment! Not easy at all. -- they are playing

:26:41.:26:46.

in a wind tunnel. Got to give yourself bigger margins

:26:47.:27:16.

in these conditions, big targets. You aim for the central channel of

:27:17.:27:22.

the court! Yes! And then allow the wind to take it wherever.

:27:23.:28:00.

I don't know about you, Annie, I don't completely trust the swing

:28:01.:28:09.

path on that forehand. It is by far the weakest shot. And when it does

:28:10.:28:13.

get a little close and tense, you see her looking to take her backhand

:28:14.:28:17.

from the middle of the court as much as possible. A side she is much more

:28:18.:28:24.

comfortable on. It's a more reliable win, as well. -- wing as well.

:28:25.:28:56.

Yes, didn't really adjust her feet, there. And she has played her way

:28:57.:29:19.

into some trouble and now it is Konta with a chance to get the early

:29:20.:29:21.

break. Konta is not sure, but a look at her

:29:22.:30:36.

camp and elected not to challenge. It looks like Tsurenko won the

:30:37.:30:40.

coach, but going along pretty well here. She wants her racket, we are

:30:41.:30:50.

just seeing. A late we string. So, if you work on two, -- if you were

:30:51.:30:57.

Konta, how would you take on Tsurenko in the city conditions? She

:30:58.:31:02.

still has to give herself big targets. She knows what to expect

:31:03.:31:06.

from Tsurenko and she will be aware the forehand wing is the weaker wing

:31:07.:31:09.

and where she will have more opportunities to play more

:31:10.:31:15.

aggressively. If she attacked that side she is more likely to get a

:31:16.:31:21.

shorter ball. But I think for Jo out here, it is all about her. If she

:31:22.:31:27.

does what is in her control very well, it big first serve, she makes

:31:28.:31:31.

herself tough to break and then on the return games, have a go. She was

:31:32.:31:35.

able to create opportunities in that last game. Understandably, as you

:31:36.:31:41.

know her really well, you have practised with her quite a lot, she

:31:42.:31:46.

looks quite tense. But that is Jo for you. In terms of how she

:31:47.:31:51.

prepares, she is one of the most meticulous tennis players I know.

:31:52.:31:57.

She is, she is very OCD about a lot of things. She would take that as a

:31:58.:32:04.

compliment, wouldn't she? I don't doubt she would have prepared very

:32:05.:32:13.

well. But it is all about controlling the nerves, which is the

:32:14.:32:17.

toughest thing for her to do. When she can, she produces fabulous

:32:18.:32:23.

tennis. We on serve here. The second round match winner to play Petra

:32:24.:32:24.

Kvitova. Give her time on that forehand and

:32:25.:33:11.

she will give it a good crack. She is also the better at the southern

:33:12.:33:16.

end, where the wind is behind you and if you get the wind behind you,

:33:17.:33:20.

very difficult to defend against. Well, she talked about staying in

:33:21.:34:28.

her own bubble and not letting crowd support getting into her zone. She

:34:29.:34:33.

could do with it here. Once again, break point on serve.

:34:34.:35:08.

come on! UMPIRE: Deuce! It's not like in

:35:09.:36:07.

Germany or in France when the home crowd sensed their play a struggling

:36:08.:36:16.

a little and they do race slow handclap and let their player know

:36:17.:36:20.

what's going on. Here, it's not more polite. Oh, that might need a little

:36:21.:36:36.

look at. A challenge for the call, it was called out.

:36:37.:36:46.

A long way from our commentary box, the far end. Two challenges

:36:47.:36:54.

remaining. The wind really has picked up this

:36:55.:37:33.

afternoon. It's horrid wind, because suddenly it will drop for half a

:37:34.:37:40.

minute and then it will gust up. It just bounces off the stands and

:37:41.:37:43.

swirls around. You never know what you are going to get. Confusing

:37:44.:37:45.

wind. That is a gritty holder from the

:37:46.:38:11.

British number one. Konta just doing enough in that last

:38:12.:39:21.

game to draw the errors from Tsurenko.

:39:22.:40:23.

Cap next -- great control from Konta. Not the easiest control to

:40:24.:41:12.

find from that part of the court, she managed it.

:41:13.:41:25.

Still with serve in the second set, Tsurenko. We were chatting about how

:41:26.:42:09.

she didn't take tennis seriously until she was 17. A lot of players

:42:10.:42:16.

take it seriously from the age of seven! She is still very young in

:42:17.:42:21.

tennis years. How can you do that these days? Well, she is showing the

:42:22.:42:26.

rest of us that it is possible and you don't have to be on a full-time

:42:27.:42:30.

schedule by the age of ten to succeed as a tennis player. There is

:42:31.:42:36.

no right or wrong way to come through and up the tennis ranks.

:42:37.:42:40.

What works for one player will not work for another. You know, there is

:42:41.:42:45.

a lot of pressure on young kids these days, who do show an interest

:42:46.:42:50.

in becoming a professional tennis player to give up full-time

:42:51.:42:55.

education and training for five hours a day from such a young age,

:42:56.:42:59.

which I don't think is actually the right thing to do. I think if you

:43:00.:43:06.

can, you should stay at school until the age of 16, at least, try and,

:43:07.:43:15.

you know, base yourself at home for as long as possible, if it is

:43:16.:43:20.

possible, to have the right coaches and the right practice partners

:43:21.:43:26.

around to develop your game. I just think that provides you with much

:43:27.:43:32.

better stability. Some of these players now have online schooling or

:43:33.:43:37.

travelling tutors. It is easier to read and have that sort of life.

:43:38.:43:43.

Contact with the new ball certainly has her work cut out here. -- Konta.

:43:44.:44:35.

One of her favourite shots to play, that backhand up the line.

:44:36.:45:07.

Not the most fluent match, it is rather hit and miss, understandable

:45:08.:45:16.

in these conditions. A lot of nerves out there as well.

:45:17.:45:22.

Dropped, I'm afraid. Where is that steward today? He caught a beauty at

:45:23.:45:33.

Samantha Stosur's... APPLAUSE

:45:34.:46:01.

Well, they have been out here in this second round match for just

:46:02.:46:05.

over half an hour. Maybe Joe and just starting to

:46:06.:46:08.

loosen off and burn off some of those nerves. -- maybe Jo.

:46:09.:46:36.

Oh! That was the obvious short for Tsurenko to play. Konta very quick

:46:37.:46:49.

up to the short one. Very close to crushing forwards into the net. Had

:46:50.:46:58.

to steady herself there. Just a bit too much for the British number one.

:46:59.:48:16.

Frustrating for Konta, she has only had one in the fifth game of this

:48:17.:48:24.

opening set, had to face quite a few on her serve.

:48:25.:48:33.

And Tsurenko managing rather well here. Polite applause from the

:48:34.:48:45.

stands. It is funny when you come to Eastbourne and you're playing and

:48:46.:48:49.

coming down here for commentary, you see a lot of the same faces. They

:48:50.:48:54.

are very loyal, they know their players. Ticket sales, yesterday was

:48:55.:48:58.

terrible with the weather but as soon as the sun comes out, Centre

:48:59.:49:03.

Court is almost full now, apart from the odd little corner in the shade.

:49:04.:49:08.

As a tournament, it is well supported by the locals. They like

:49:09.:49:11.

their tennis here but they are probably the most polite crowd you

:49:12.:49:17.

will ever find. You might get the odd come on, Jo at some point. What

:49:18.:49:22.

do you think about her saying she was not going to allow the fact her

:49:23.:49:27.

parents live a couple of miles from here and she is very much, has spent

:49:28.:49:32.

a lot of her teenage years in Eastbourne, she is seen as a local

:49:33.:49:38.

girl despite being brought up on the northern beaches of Sydney, until

:49:39.:49:43.

she was 14, and her family moved everyone here, but she said she will

:49:44.:49:49.

stay in the bubble, she will not let lost support the PSF? Should she

:49:50.:49:55.

embrace it a little more? I don't think it would do any harm but

:49:56.:49:58.

leading thinkers that with -- that is really her personality. She is

:49:59.:50:04.

learning to just give people a bit more of her personality more. But it

:50:05.:50:08.

is not something that comes naturally to her. She is quirky, I

:50:09.:50:16.

can vouch for that. We are all quirky! You, more than just a bit!

:50:17.:50:22.

So, Konta here serving to stay in this opening set.

:50:23.:52:32.

Usually has a very reliable second serve, one of the best on the

:52:33.:52:39.

women's tour, was in fine form down in Australia at Melbourne Park. That

:52:40.:52:46.

was a huge part of her run to the semifinals.

:52:47.:52:58.

She has done an enormous amount of work over the last couple of years

:52:59.:53:04.

with a sports psychologist and you can almost see her going through her

:53:05.:53:06.

process, because she is nervous. Yes, relief to get through that

:53:07.:53:27.

game. They have gotten very handy players,

:53:28.:54:31.

they always produce a few... Bondarenko... They could have had

:54:32.:54:42.

Elena Vesnina, because she was born in that part of the world. Has

:54:43.:54:50.

chosen to represent Russia. Sochi is her home town these days. I think

:54:51.:54:57.

she moved there when she was quite young, when it was still part of the

:54:58.:54:59.

Soviet Union. The perfect shot from Konta to play,

:55:00.:55:13.

hard and deep into the Tsurenko forehand. That is exactly what

:55:14.:55:18.

you're talking about, when it gets tight, that forehand looks fragile.

:55:19.:55:40.

Good pressure from Tsurenko. The court looks very soft for her and

:55:41.:55:54.

the ball isn't coming through at all. But there are places where it

:55:55.:56:02.

is still a bit lush. Very much so. It will harden up as we go through

:56:03.:56:03.

this week. Again, that forehand... Right on

:56:04.:56:27.

power line. -- on our line. The wind looks as if it is blowing from left

:56:28.:56:34.

to right of your picture. The ball would have just drifted over. On

:56:35.:56:41.

another day, it would have been a couple of inches inside. But a great

:56:42.:56:46.

opportunity here for Konta. Second serve return. A careless

:56:47.:57:03.

error therefore Konta. There it is again. Deep into the

:57:04.:58:33.

Tsurenko forehand. There is an irony in that, because for many years, it

:58:34.:58:39.

would be players going into Jo's forehand hard and fast and getting

:58:40.:58:47.

the error. The Konta forehand is something that has improved, out of

:58:48.:58:55.

sight. It is not the same shot. Johanna Konta is not the tennis

:58:56.:58:58.

player I remember! Tsurenko rather labouring through

:58:59.:59:34.

this game, and she is at what we feel is the good end, with the wind

:59:35.:59:36.

behind her. When you're feeling nervous and a

:59:37.:59:59.

little uptight, the first thing that goes is your footwork, and Konta

:00:00.:00:02.

just not getting up to that ball in that last point.

:00:03.:00:47.

Oh! My goodness. I just wonder if she caught Konta moving... And also,

:00:48.:00:59.

the previous point where she missed a forehand, by some distance. That

:01:00.:01:07.

would have also had an effect. Big support there from the fans. They

:01:08.:01:09.

sense this is important. Whoever is doing the school graphic

:01:10.:01:33.

has got a little carried away. It is actually 5-5 at the moment. Another

:01:34.:01:43.

break point. That forehand really breaking down from Tsurenko.

:01:44.:02:08.

Better margin, better control that time of the forehand from Tsurenko.

:02:09.:02:15.

But it was the server setup that short ball, very smart serve into

:02:16.:02:26.

Konta's body. Must be coming up to, what, and eight of nine minute game.

:02:27.:02:35.

Once again, second serve return. Break point.

:02:36.:04:19.

Oh! Well, they are living and breathing every shot that Jo please.

:04:20.:04:36.

She has done a great job of building pressure in this game. -- Jo plays.

:04:37.:04:41.

Still hasn't got the breakthrough after so many chances.

:04:42.:05:22.

That was a much better return from Konta, that was what she needed when

:05:23.:05:32.

she had break point opportunities. That is what it is easy to think,

:05:33.:05:40.

why didn't I do that before? But Jo was ever dog-eared, sticking in,

:05:41.:05:41.

back to deuce. -- dogged. Very decisive and matter of fact on

:05:42.:06:01.

that forehand from Tsurenko. Surprising, given some of the

:06:02.:06:15.

mistakes he has made in this game. She has.

:06:16.:06:32.

Does incredibly well, Lesia Tsurenko. Hold on despite all those

:06:33.:06:39.

break points. They have been on court for just

:06:40.:06:48.

under an hour. I can't translate what he's telling

:06:49.:07:05.

her... It has been a topsy-turvy affair, both players have other

:07:06.:07:16.

opportunities. The conditions haven't been easy as well. The wind

:07:17.:07:22.

has been making it awkward for both women held there. You have to admire

:07:23.:07:37.

their discipline as well. You cannot expect of a perfect tennis out here.

:07:38.:07:45.

But for Konta, she has had her opportunity, and number of break

:07:46.:07:48.

point opportunities, the number of second serve returns she has missed,

:07:49.:07:52.

and she still looks fairly tentative out there, to me. She doesn't look

:07:53.:07:58.

like she is able to relax just yet. And just play with a bit more

:07:59.:08:03.

freedom, which she needs to, if she is to make a real impact in this

:08:04.:08:07.

match. Up against a player she hasn't beaten before. It would be

:08:08.:08:15.

great to see if Jo can release herself and once again, she finds

:08:16.:08:20.

herself trying to serve to stay in this very long opening set.

:08:21.:10:02.

Both women struggling with their ball tosses, normally so secure

:10:03.:10:11.

behind a second serve, gets a lot of sheep and work on it. -- shape.

:10:12.:10:28.

That was a great response from Konta.

:10:29.:10:38.

So, 12 games played, not a single break in them but lots of break

:10:39.:10:45.

points. Konta with a very good record this

:10:46.:10:55.

season. Oh, superb! But has she made it? I

:10:56.:11:45.

have to say poor guy has had a rest on the Centre Court today. --

:11:46.:11:53.

Hawk-Eye. On most of the matches, this is the fourth of the day. This

:11:54.:11:56.

is a good one from Tsurenko. Beautifully done. Superb from Konta!

:11:57.:12:48.

And maybe now, just starting to relax out here. Konta's tie-break

:12:49.:13:03.

record this year won five, lost two. You take that, wouldn't you? Yes.

:13:04.:13:40.

Very smart return, taking the pace off, forcing Tsurenko to come up

:13:41.:13:47.

with something herself. A clever shot to play to the Tsurenko

:13:48.:13:53.

forehand. Give her no pace. She doesn't like generating her own. And

:13:54.:13:57.

it is a tough thing to do on the grass, the ball staying down very

:13:58.:14:03.

low. Yes, take advantage of the soft courts. They will not be like that

:14:04.:14:05.

for much longer. What you can say about Jo Konta is

:14:06.:14:37.

that she has been persistent out here. She hasn't got too

:14:38.:14:41.

disappointed when she hasn't converted on so many break point

:14:42.:14:46.

opportunities. She might be rewarded here. She has had to play catch up

:14:47.:14:52.

the whole set, serving second. She can drive this tie-break now.

:14:53.:16:10.

And contour has just been -- and Konta has just been rock solid in

:16:11.:16:27.

the tie-break. She has had such a great record this season in

:16:28.:16:32.

tie-breaks. It has been a real labour of love, 67 minutes, four

:16:33.:16:34.

break points. The ball is taking a long time to

:16:35.:17:01.

get down to the other end. -- the balls.

:17:02.:17:37.

It's OK. Still got a couple of set points in her pocket.

:17:38.:18:00.

Oh, relief for everyone and Britain's number one as Konta take

:18:01.:18:09.

the opening set by 7-5 on the tie-breaker.

:18:10.:18:16.

STUDIO: That's great, a full house as the

:18:17.:18:22.

British number one take the set. It big upset with seeded Roberta Vinci

:18:23.:18:26.

going out to Ekaterina Makarova of Russia. That will make our British

:18:27.:18:32.

Tara Moore feel better because she lost two very yesterday. They have

:18:33.:18:38.

been mixed fortunes for two of our guys at Nottingham. A good win for

:18:39.:18:44.

Dan Evans. We are back tomorrow at ten past

:18:45.:18:52.

one. Let's hope that if Jo Konta can win

:18:53.:19:07.

this, she will be playing Petra Kvitova. And we should mention that

:19:08.:19:12.

Northern Ireland versus Germany is on BBC One at the moment. When this

:19:13.:19:17.

match leaves us here on BBC Two, you can still follow it on the Internet

:19:18.:19:23.

and also on connected TV. Which we know you have.

:19:24.:19:28.

COMMENTATOR: Whether you like or disapprove of

:19:29.:19:36.

this on court coaching, it's a huge relief for Jo to get her coaching.

:19:37.:19:44.

Let's listen in. I mean, I know there are some balls bouncing a bit

:19:45.:19:53.

shorter but it is pushing it back. Yes, if you find yourself in a

:19:54.:19:57.

vision like that, don't be afraid of missing because you have to hit a

:19:58.:20:02.

passing shot. Also you did a good job trying to bring her into the net

:20:03.:20:06.

with short balls or top shots. Stay with that.

:20:07.:20:11.

COMMENTATOR: Well, Jo is the last lead to

:20:12.:20:15.

complain about everything but bearing out what you have been

:20:16.:20:22.

saying tactically. Always very impressed with her coach when he has

:20:23.:20:29.

come on court. -- Jo is the last player to complain. Let's see how

:20:30.:20:32.

she goes now. Second set. Her coach, whenever he comes on for

:20:33.:20:50.

a pep talk, he's always very clear and precise.

:20:51.:21:07.

For Konta, in these conditions, she has to be decisive and make up our

:21:08.:21:18.

mind what she wants to do and go with it. You can't doubt yourself

:21:19.:21:20.

out there. A huge weight will have been lifted

:21:21.:21:43.

off her shoulders, having got that first set under her belt. Yes, just

:21:44.:21:49.

has to be careful she doesn't have a let down here. 15-30.

:21:50.:22:03.

A shot you see Konta play more often these days. There is definitely more

:22:04.:22:21.

variety in her game. That is one of the reasons why we have seen her

:22:22.:22:25.

improved so much and shoot up the rankings.

:22:26.:23:00.

If you are going to approach against Tsurenko, you have got to go into

:23:01.:23:12.

her forehand. Going into her strength... Tsurenko with the chance

:23:13.:23:17.

to begin the fight back here. Well that call has been challenged

:23:18.:24:03.

straightaway. Sorrento seems convinced it was either long or wide

:24:04.:24:16.

of the tramlines. -- Tsurenko. And it has caught the line, it's in!

:24:17.:24:23.

Just feels like such an important game for Konta, to keep the momentum

:24:24.:24:26.

of that opening set up. STUDIO:

:24:27.:24:44.

That may have been a big moment, but that is where we will have to leave

:24:45.:24:49.

things on BBC Two. But you can say with this match online and on

:24:50.:24:53.

connected TVs. Let's hope that Jo can carry on with her form. And the

:24:54.:24:58.

programme tomorrow starts at 1:10pm. From a

:24:59.:25:00.
