Rafael Nadal. Andy Murray. So powerful. It is like an exhibition

:00:38.:00:57.

match. Oh yes, that is amazing. That is an absolute demonstration. That

:00:58.:01:07.

is a wicked tennis point. Brilliant shot. The hard work has paid off,

:01:08.:01:22.

very comfortable, brilliant performance. That will be that. It

:01:23.:01:29.

is always a superb clash of style and personality, these two played an

:01:30.:01:33.

epic 3-set battle on this Court five years ago, Tim and Andy with me

:01:34.:01:37.

again, a lot has happened in that five years, particular for Rafa.

:01:38.:01:42.

There have been some fantastic achievements but we reflect on the

:01:43.:01:45.

previous ten or 11 months where he has had a real battle with his

:01:46.:01:50.

confidence and he had an open and frank press conference in Miami and

:01:51.:01:53.

he said in the big moments he was so nervous and struggling so much. In

:01:54.:01:57.

the last couple of months, it looks like he has found better form, he

:01:58.:02:00.

played a fantastic first match against Stan Wawrinka, 6-3, 6-2, it

:02:01.:02:07.

will be an interesting matchup against Andy Murray. As they make

:02:08.:02:13.

their way onto the court, Rafa has talked about the quote he gave in

:02:14.:02:17.

Miami where he said he was lost his confidence coming he was being so

:02:18.:02:21.

honest but he said that has really hurt him. You have to have fun when

:02:22.:02:27.

you are out there, he wants to be honest with having fun and with

:02:28.:02:31.

people in the game, he wants to play by instinct again and put the smile

:02:32.:02:35.

back on his face. He knows it is not a crisis, we know what a crisis is

:02:36.:02:39.

over the last few days and he has kept it all in perspective. He is

:02:40.:02:43.

better than number ten in the world and is back up to number five. He

:02:44.:02:52.

has 27 Masters 1000 trophies, from Spain, Rafael Nadal!

:02:53.:03:19.

Ladies and gentlemen, making his seventh appearance at the Barclays

:03:20.:03:26.

ATP World Tour Finals, winner of 35 titles including two grand slam

:03:27.:03:29.

singles crowns, from Great Britain, Andy Murray.

:03:30.:04:01.

The players are out, a great ovation for both players and we look at

:04:02.:04:08.

their head to head, Rafa has the advantage, 11-6 but they have only

:04:09.:04:14.

met once this year, on clay and Andy got his first victory over Rafa, a

:04:15.:04:18.

big win in Madrid. It certainly was, that was on his way to the mink his

:04:19.:04:25.

second clay title back to back, his first title back to back, his first

:04:26.:04:30.

titles five years, the surprise is they have only played five times,

:04:31.:04:34.

being top of the game, you would think they would play more than

:04:35.:04:39.

that. It is an interesting matchup, Rafa is a lefty and playing with so

:04:40.:04:43.

much top-spin, if you are going to compete well against him as a

:04:44.:04:46.

right-hander, you need a good at hand and that is where I think

:04:47.:04:50.

Federer in the past has struggled because there is so much spin on

:04:51.:04:55.

Rafa's forehand Ross court, that is where Murray can have success

:04:56.:04:59.

because he can step in and use his left hand on his two-handed backhand

:05:00.:05:03.

and get on top of the ball. It will be fascinating to see who will

:05:04.:05:09.

dictate the play today. Andy has a great record against lefties? I did

:05:10.:05:16.

not hear you. He has a great record against left-handers, if not Rafa.

:05:17.:05:21.

You think of Federer dealing with the high return on the forehand and

:05:22.:05:26.

all of those victories he was denied because Rafa came along, Novak with

:05:27.:05:29.

his double hander and Andy have worked out what they want to do.

:05:30.:05:35.

They can flatten it out and go to Rafa's strength, his forehand before

:05:36.:05:39.

going to his backhand side, tactically I think that will be

:05:40.:05:44.

interesting to watch today. It is a match that Murray starts as a narrow

:05:45.:05:49.

favourite but who knows what will happen. Great to see Rafa back in

:05:50.:05:54.

form, demolishing Stan Wawrinka in the first match, if a player wins in

:05:55.:06:00.

straight sets, they will be through to the semifinal. Gentlemen, welcome

:06:01.:06:10.

to the O2, we have umpires covering all the lines, Hawk-Eye is

:06:11.:06:15.

operational, it would be helpful if you make your time just clear and

:06:16.:06:19.

quick, preferably a verbal challenge to avoid any doubt and finally we

:06:20.:06:27.

have TV changeovers. Heads or tails? It is tails. Heads.

:06:28.:06:56.

Today it is the Nastase group in action and we are looking forward to

:06:57.:07:06.

this one, Murray against Nadal, Stan Wawrinka this afternoon against

:07:07.:07:09.

David Ferrer, they both lost their opening matches in straight sets so

:07:10.:07:13.

that is an elimination match, the second one on tonight. If Murray or

:07:14.:07:19.

Nadal win in straight sets, they will go through and join Roger

:07:20.:07:23.

Federer, Djokovic has not been beaten indoors for three years but

:07:24.:07:26.

we saw last night that all records are there to be and Federer did

:07:27.:07:32.

that. He finished it off in style. He said he got lucky with a top-spin

:07:33.:07:38.

forehand down the line but that is magnificent, he has volleyed a great

:07:39.:07:43.

deal more under Stefan Edberg, keeping the points short when he

:07:44.:07:47.

can, that was just a gorgeous shot last night, I replayed that at home.

:07:48.:07:52.

It is just a beautiful thing to watch him play well and he knows

:07:53.:07:55.

full well that he can play Djokovic again later in the week and he knows

:07:56.:07:59.

Djokovic can play a lot better than that but it was turning back the

:08:00.:08:04.

clock again, just what Roger once, moments and tournaments like this.

:08:05.:08:08.

So many Federer fans, it feels like a home tie for him, he takes on Kei

:08:09.:08:13.

Nishikori tomorrow, that is the match tomorrow afternoon on BBC Two

:08:14.:08:19.

at 2pm and then Djokovic against Berdych, all four players, the other

:08:20.:08:22.

three players all have a chance statistically of going through. I

:08:23.:08:28.

have some sort of idea, if Nishikori beats Federer, he then needs Berdych

:08:29.:08:33.

to beat Djokovic and then if Federer wins and Berdych beats docker vitch

:08:34.:08:38.

in straight sets, Federer and Berdych go through. It is

:08:39.:08:43.

complicated. How many years have we done this? It never gets easier, let

:08:44.:08:48.

other people worry about the maths, we talked a little bit about Rafa

:08:49.:08:54.

and how his confidence was down. But there are signs in the past two

:08:55.:08:59.

months that he is getting back, belief is so important. They talk

:09:00.:09:03.

about the physical side but the belief and confidence to win the big

:09:04.:09:05.

point is the difference between a good player and a great one. The

:09:06.:09:10.

ironic thing, with the mental side of things, when Rafa's confidence

:09:11.:09:15.

went down, it affected so many aspects of his game, he was not as

:09:16.:09:19.

aggressive on the forehand and it dropped a bit shorter and so his

:09:20.:09:22.

opponent could be more aggressive and make Rafa do the running. When

:09:23.:09:27.

you are playing with more pressure, it affects your movement, you do not

:09:28.:09:31.

feel as free or as fast, it is sort of a snowball effect that he is

:09:32.:09:35.

going the wrong way but I am delighted to hear how he spoke about

:09:36.:09:39.

the passion and how he wants to get back to playing at an exceptionally

:09:40.:09:43.

high level and he has started to do that. Irrespective of what happens

:09:44.:09:47.

at this tournament, we can expect big things in 2016. Let us hear

:09:48.:09:53.

about how he's getting that passion back for tennis because he spoke

:09:54.:09:58.

yesterday. I am enjoying my tennis more than a couple of months ago

:09:59.:10:01.

because I feel more relaxed on court. That is the most important

:10:02.:10:11.

thing that I needed to fix. Fix it, go on court and play and see what I

:10:12.:10:18.

can do to compete against an opponent. A lot of moments in the

:10:19.:10:21.

season I was thinking about what I had to do to play OK, not thinking

:10:22.:10:27.

what I had to do to beat the opponent and now it is different. I

:10:28.:10:31.

worked on my game. Is your hunger for success your appetite for the

:10:32.:10:37.

sport, as strong as always was? You know a little bit, when you come

:10:38.:10:41.

back from know a little bit, when you come

:10:42.:10:44.

motivation to be back to your best is very hard. I do not know if I

:10:45.:10:53.

will make that happen but my motivation and my passion for what I

:10:54.:11:02.

am doing is 100% and I have the motivation to really keep going and

:11:03.:11:09.

end this season on a high level. He certainly has that, the hunger. We

:11:10.:11:14.

will ask on social media, do you think he will win another Grand

:11:15.:11:18.

Slam? Many times over the last few years, the body has let him down. He

:11:19.:11:24.

has. You lose rhythm and belief, he is the kind of guy who needs a lot

:11:25.:11:27.

of matches to feel comfortable on court. I never thought I would see

:11:28.:11:32.

Nadal lose confidence, especially on the big points but that happened

:11:33.:11:36.

this year. He is human after all, is he going to win another slam, a good

:11:37.:11:40.

question, his record dropped to 70 wins and two losses at the French

:11:41.:11:47.

Open over his career by losing to Novak Djokovic. 70-2, I suspect he

:11:48.:11:54.

will win a 10th French. That is the thing, once he gets the confidence

:11:55.:12:00.

back on the clay courts, he could be unbeatable again. Very much so, hard

:12:01.:12:04.

courts will always be more of a challenge but the way he moves and

:12:05.:12:07.

the technique he has on the shots with so much spin and power, that

:12:08.:12:11.

will always be effective on a clay court. They have been such happy

:12:12.:12:16.

hunting grounds for him, as Andrew said, he can win another French

:12:17.:12:20.

Open, that is for sure. As for this match, Andy Murray beat David Ferrer

:12:21.:12:27.

in straight sets and looked good in that match. He did, the last six

:12:28.:12:31.

games were very impressive, the early part of the match was a bit in

:12:32.:12:35.

and out, his concentration came and went a bit but when he got that

:12:36.:12:39.

controlled aggression from 3-1 down in the second set to win it am a

:12:40.:12:46.

those are good signs. It is or is a tough matchup against Rafa but he

:12:47.:12:49.

does have a good record against lefties and his favourite server is

:12:50.:12:53.

out wide and slow, the other is going into Rafa's weaker side, when

:12:54.:13:00.

Murray goes to the forehand, he has to go there with strength and make

:13:01.:13:06.

sure that he does not give Rafa an opportunity to play his best shot

:13:07.:13:10.

and make Rafa beat him with his backhand. You talk about

:13:11.:13:14.

motivation, Andy Murray, a win would secure the number two spot in the

:13:15.:13:19.

world rankings and that is a big achievement and mix the difference

:13:20.:13:22.

for the seedings for the Australian Open. He would not be in Djokovic's

:13:23.:13:27.

ha. He has never finished as high as number two in the year and rankings

:13:28.:13:32.

so there are many things to play for and a by-product of that is the

:13:33.:13:37.

second seed at the Australian Open so fingers crossed. It has been a

:13:38.:13:42.

really good year for him, you always judged by Grand Slam victories but

:13:43.:13:45.

when you look at what he has done, particularly in the Davis Cup as

:13:46.:13:49.

well, he has had an outstanding year. It has been absolutely

:13:50.:13:53.

outstanding, you reflect back to this event 12 months ago when he

:13:54.:13:59.

lost 6-1, 6-02 Roger Federer and there were huge questions about his

:14:00.:14:03.

game and the style he was playing, was his back 100% and the

:14:04.:14:07.

relationship with Amelie Mauresmo but he has bounced back in brilliant

:14:08.:14:11.

style. He started off in Australia playing the final playing extremely

:14:12.:14:14.

well and he built on that for the Davis Cup and it has been an

:14:15.:14:17.

incredible achievement and hopefully they can finish it off in Belgium.

:14:18.:14:22.

That is the Davis Cup final which you can see live on the BBC. We will

:14:23.:14:30.

ask a question about Rafa and whether he can win another Grand

:14:31.:14:33.

Slam. Get in touch with us at hashtag BBC tennis or via our

:14:34.:14:36.

Facebook page. Many ways to get in touch and we love to hear from you.

:14:37.:14:40.

Tim is on his way and Andrew Castle is already in the commentary box, it

:14:41.:14:46.

is all yours. COMMENTATOR: I reckon they have turned the volume up here

:14:47.:14:53.

in the O2, 17,000 plus in the house. The sound system really booming out,

:14:54.:14:57.

they do just about every form of entertainment it, one of the most

:14:58.:15:01.

successful venues in the world, Madonna will be here soon. Some big

:15:02.:15:07.

bands to look forward to but I do not think it gets much better than

:15:08.:15:11.

watching Rafael Nadal play. The same can be said of Andy Murray. World

:15:12.:15:16.

number two plays the world number five in a group match. Best of three

:15:17.:15:25.

sets. Both winners in their first matches and another chance to assess

:15:26.:15:31.

the form of one of the all-time greats as he regains his joy for the

:15:32.:15:33.

game of tennis. 0-0. 15 drop shots against David Ferrer

:15:34.:16:19.

the other day, Andy Murray. He likes to mix it up, he talks about the

:16:20.:16:25.

importance of speed and says it is a little bit quicker than Paris on

:16:26.:16:27.

this court than a couple of weeks ago.

:16:28.:17:04.

It was a driven backhand from Andy Murray on Nadal's forehand side but

:17:05.:17:09.

it was on the line. If you are struggling a little bit

:17:10.:18:01.

with your confidence, there will always be more nervous tension at

:18:02.:18:07.

the start of a match. That is a rogues gallery, look at that.

:18:08.:18:44.

Struggling with a little bit of confidence can create a bit of

:18:45.:18:49.

nervous tension, particularly at the beginning of a match. Rafa making a

:18:50.:18:55.

couple of unforced errors, this is a good opportunity for Murray to stamp

:18:56.:18:57.

his authority. And that is the end of that. A quick

:18:58.:19:33.

break to Andy Murray in this clash of champions this afternoon. Great

:19:34.:19:44.

stuff. It used to be with Roger Federer trying to get that ball down

:19:45.:19:48.

to the Rafa forehand, the heavy top-spin forehand and could not get

:19:49.:19:54.

it down or control it with the racket either, really struggled on

:19:55.:19:58.

that side, these boys came along, Murray and Djokovic with a double

:19:59.:20:03.

handed backhand and their physicality and they can cope now

:20:04.:20:08.

with Nadal. The game has moved on in five, six, seven years. The game has

:20:09.:20:13.

moved on but when you look at Rafa's game now, he is not hitting

:20:14.:20:18.

it quite as hard or as much spin or as close to the line so it is a

:20:19.:20:26.

slightly easier proposition. In years gone by when you got into

:20:27.:20:32.

baseline exchanges, you felt that Rafa was managing proceedings but

:20:33.:20:35.

you saw in that first game it was Murray's choice how the points were

:20:36.:20:41.

played. And on this surface, a platter, hard ball is that much more

:20:42.:20:43.

effective. That is Murray's bread and butter

:20:44.:22:09.

served, the down the middle on the ad side of the box, particularly to

:22:10.:22:15.

Rafa's two-handed backhand, it is also important member to serve and

:22:16.:22:17.

volley occasionally to Nadal guessing.

:22:18.:23:11.

That was a bit of a wild one, wasn't it?

:23:12.:23:56.

Mr Murray is challenging the call on the baseline, it was called out.

:23:57.:25:03.

Went for the change of direction Andy Murray and he finds the net, it

:25:04.:25:07.

is a break of serve will a couple of uncharacteristic errors

:25:08.:25:20.

from Andy Murray in that game as he tried to consolidate the game he

:25:21.:25:27.

achieved in Game one. It already feels physical, doesn't it? A big

:25:28.:25:34.

rally to open up that game a sign of Nadal's intent, 25 shots. Not a

:25:35.:25:38.

first serve made in his first service game Nadal he needs to find

:25:39.:25:41.

his rhythm on the delivery. Mr Nadal is challenging the call on

:25:42.:25:58.

the service line. The ball was called out. Murray just making the

:25:59.:26:07.

point, how long will he take? As it catches the outside edge of the line

:26:08.:26:11.

which Murray suspected no doubt. Just making a point to the umpire in

:26:12.:26:22.

the chair. Rafa takes his time with everything, between points and

:26:23.:26:23.

challenges. Murray is being really talkative at

:26:24.:27:02.

them and, a sign of nerves? Did not look nervous when he broke serve in

:27:03.:27:06.

the first game, probably more frustration, being up a game and

:27:07.:27:09.

30-15. Have a look where this forehand

:27:10.:27:36.

lands. That is a ball that Murray has got to step into. 89 mph and so

:27:37.:27:40.

easy as well. Murray was right to pull his trigger

:27:41.:28:02.

on a backhand in the last rally but that one he was not quite in

:28:03.:28:08.

position and would not be the right position and accelerate that, you

:28:09.:28:09.

will not be in the right position. That is page one of the Nadal

:28:10.:28:22.

playbook, a first serve and despatching the short forehand.

:28:23.:28:30.

Murray is still talking to his camp over there, he is definitely

:28:31.:28:35.

agitated at the moment and he is not afraid to say to the umpire about

:28:36.:28:38.

how long he took to challenge and between points, it is part of the

:28:39.:28:42.

contest out there in establishing territory at the beginning of a

:28:43.:28:48.

match. When you talk about Murray being agitated, we have been in the

:28:49.:28:52.

match 12 minutes and played three games. You are right but what I am

:28:53.:29:01.

saying is, why? It is unnecessary because it is not doing himself any

:29:02.:29:06.

favours, he was up a break and 30-15 on his serve and he has lost seven

:29:07.:29:11.

of the next eight points and when he is distracted and has this dialogue

:29:12.:29:16.

going back and forth from the box he is not concentrating on the next

:29:17.:29:19.

point and when you play one of the greats of the games, you have to

:29:20.:29:25.

have 100% focus every point. Rafa, his achievements are fabulous, what

:29:26.:29:33.

a generation. Was he taking a little trim there. Who was it the other day

:29:34.:29:37.

had a cup of Coffey out there, Stan Wawrinka. He has taken quite a lot

:29:38.:29:45.

off there. Cutting his own hair on court. Always looking at ways to

:29:46.:29:51.

save costs. The vibration damper has fallen out.

:29:52.:33:18.

Definitely speeding up and flattening out the forehand.

:33:19.:33:26.

Against Ferrer he talked about playing himself in. I don't think he

:33:27.:33:44.

felt under threat against Ferrer at any point. This is a very different

:33:45.:33:51.

match for him. He certainly needs to make sure he is proactive in the

:33:52.:33:52.

rallies. We talk about the offensive skills

:33:53.:34:32.

of these players but I think it is the defensive ones that separate the

:34:33.:34:36.

best players and Murray's backhand was the defining factor of that

:34:37.:34:39.

point. Has not found his first serve read

:34:40.:36:05.

them yet. Rafael Nadal, just five first serves in out of 13 attempts.

:36:06.:36:12.

Under pressure from the back of the court.

:36:13.:37:15.

Big change of direction in that rally for Nadal. He had the guts to

:37:16.:37:24.

go on the offensive with that two hander.

:37:25.:37:35.

Certainly pretty warm out there with the amount that Nadal is perspiring.

:37:36.:38:52.

An intense start. We are settling in nicely here for a spectacular

:38:53.:39:05.

afternoon. Rafael Nadal went down to number ten in the world earlier this

:39:06.:39:10.

year. He is back up to number five. This is his record. It is just

:39:11.:39:16.

amazing. Nine titles in the French Open. Just two defeat there. He has

:39:17.:39:27.

won absolutely everything, including the Olympic gold medal, the Davis

:39:28.:39:37.

Cup in Seville as a 17-year-old. 27,000 people, as far as I remember.

:39:38.:39:41.

He has never won the World Tour Finals. That is the record. 27

:39:42.:39:50.

titles in the Masters. I think he's got a legitimate point

:39:51.:40:03.

when he talks about this being on clay. There is no chance of it being

:40:04.:40:13.

on clay in London. That is the great man. The sport has been lucky to

:40:14.:40:14.

have him. He's got a tennis academy that he's

:40:15.:40:20.

starting. There were times this year when

:40:21.:40:29.

people were talking about the possibility of him not being at the

:40:30.:40:33.

top of the game for too much longer. I think those thoughts are

:40:34.:40:39.

disappearing. That was probably the same people who said Roger Federer

:40:40.:40:42.

should retire about three years ago. That's right.

:40:43.:41:57.

Just helped by the net cord. What is he saying to the umpire? Murray was

:41:58.:42:10.

complaining about Nadal taking too much time, the umpire said the court

:42:11.:42:15.

needs to be dry because of how much he is sweating. I think Andy Murray

:42:16.:42:20.

was asking rather sarcastically whether he could have the court

:42:21.:42:21.

dried. Good to see his dad here. Captain

:42:22.:43:08.

Leon Smith from the Davis Cup as well. I wonder if he will pick him

:43:09.:43:10.

next week. Concentration is not where it should

:43:11.:43:25.

be. You cannot help but think, how deep does Andy Murray want to dig

:43:26.:43:33.

this week? How much do you want to win five matches ahead of the Davis

:43:34.:43:36.

Cup final? It is not ideal. As demanding on the concentration as

:43:37.:43:44.

anything. He has got down to a game point up.

:43:45.:45:43.

The players have been to the net nine times so far.

:45:44.:46:35.

Take your time, get a warning. The scrum told by the amount of time

:46:36.:46:43.

rather than a Dallas taking. This is what happens at a live

:46:44.:47:28.

event. He is very cross, he is getting the runaround here, and it

:47:29.:47:29.

is a break point to Nadal again. Masseuse, captain, dad, website

:47:30.:48:01.

organiser... It is a big business. There is the difference between

:48:02.:49:00.

Nadal now and Nadal before. He will hate that he misses those shots with

:49:01.:49:03.

an opponent struggling with concentration.

:49:04.:49:35.

Can guarantee finishing in the highest position ever. If he wins

:49:36.:50:11.

this match. Very likely to finish this excellent year with the highest

:50:12.:50:13.

ranking ever. The first and the third point,

:50:14.:51:45.

controlled aggression. Irrespective of whether Murray wins or loses the

:51:46.:51:50.

point, that is the way he can construct it.

:51:51.:52:14.

Instead of saying, good first serve, focus on the next point, you

:52:15.:52:21.

still hear this dialogue going back and forth to the box.

:52:22.:54:40.

It is great hitting from Rafael Nadal, absolutely exploding on the

:54:41.:54:46.

forehand side. There is uncle Toni, has been his coach ever since day

:54:47.:54:53.

one. Did not have any sort of knee jerk reaction when the form dropped,

:54:54.:55:00.

stayed loyal to family. Baseline rallies, when they go over nine

:55:01.:55:07.

shots, being won by an adult. -- I Ferrer. -- being won by Nadal.

:55:08.:55:35.

New balls, please. On the women's tour, the coach can come on and have

:55:36.:55:51.

a word with their player. The men opted not to go with that. No help

:55:52.:55:56.

from the outside. We all know that a little bit of communication comes in

:55:57.:56:01.

from the outside. Would anybody be able to say anything to Andy in that

:56:02.:56:06.

situation? He has always been somebody who has had a word with

:56:07.:56:09.

people and he expresses his frustration. We talk about it

:56:10.:56:14.

because it hurts his game. That is right. When you talk about

:56:15.:56:17.

communication and you say there should not be any communication

:56:18.:56:21.

coming from the outside into the court, I am not sure there is much

:56:22.:56:24.

communication coming that way but there is a lot of communication

:56:25.:56:28.

going from Murray back to his camp, and it does not do him any favours.

:56:29.:56:34.

When he construct the point, hit the ball, stepped in with clarity and

:56:35.:56:38.

dictates, key plays his best tennis, and when he does not, when he loses

:56:39.:56:42.

his focus and starts complaining, that is when he makes life difficult

:56:43.:56:47.

for himself. Is some of this to do with the fact of what is coming next

:56:48.:56:53.

week? It is huge. It is huge, he has played in huge events most of his

:56:54.:56:58.

career. Whether it is Wimbledon or the World Tour Finals or the Davis

:56:59.:57:01.

Cup finals, he has always played every match to win it with 100%

:57:02.:57:12.

effort. This is no different. If a court went on the court to have a

:57:13.:57:16.

conversation with him, the coach is not going to tell him anything he

:57:17.:57:20.

has not heard before -- if a coach went on the court.

:57:21.:57:23.

has not heard before -- if a coach his mind back on the next point and

:57:24.:57:29.

once that has been played he needs to concentrate on the point after.

:57:30.:57:30.

Simple as that. Both players felt that was over the

:57:31.:59:14.

top of the net. Will not help Andy Murray's state of mind.

:59:15.:00:05.

Another example of small margins in tennis matches.

:00:06.:00:23.

It is a way, played the point so well, excellent construction. A

:00:24.:00:43.

pretty decent lob from Nadal to push Murray into a difficult overhead, a

:00:44.:00:45.

couple of break points here. Rafa, checking the court, the ball

:00:46.:01:15.

does leave a bit of a mark. Nadal just trying to keep the ball

:01:16.:01:59.

on the length on the forehand side, just overdoing it, managed to get

:02:00.:02:03.

out of the way of the second serve on the return. Two break points

:02:04.:02:07.

saved by Murray. He has faced a crisis in this set,

:02:08.:03:05.

he has really knuckled down, hasn't he? Happy to go to Nadal's forehand

:03:06.:03:09.

hard and flat. Four straight points, Murray Dixon

:03:10.:03:56.

self out of the hole, it is for-4. I tell you what, concentration in or

:03:57.:04:02.

out but he has been up against it and produced. An excellent set of

:04:03.:04:07.

tennis, almost 50 minutes played, a round robin match in the

:04:08.:04:11.

season-ending finale of the ATP Tour. Nadal unable to be here last

:04:12.:04:21.

year, to have his appendix out. So good to have him back.

:04:22.:08:19.

It is long, this time a clenched fist from Rafa Nadal at the end of

:08:20.:08:27.

the game, a nice hold. Recent finals for Nadal in Beijing and Basel,

:08:28.:08:36.

losing to Djokovic and Federer, that will have helped his confidence as

:08:37.:08:39.

we talked about but he has gone a whole year without beating

:08:40.:08:45.

Djokovic, Federer or Murray. You would not have picked that at any

:08:46.:08:48.

time, even recovering from appendicitis, this is an important

:08:49.:08:52.

match for him, he would love to finish the year with some success

:08:53.:08:59.

and build a bad form for 2016. Exactly that, it is a great

:09:00.:09:03.

achievement to qualify for this year and championship but Rafa already

:09:04.:09:07.

has his mind on the beginning of 2016 to hit the ground running and

:09:08.:09:12.

this is about momentum as well. Certainly the way he is playing, his

:09:13.:09:16.

game is moving in the right direction again. Murray saving a

:09:17.:09:22.

couple of break points in his previous service game, Nadal would

:09:23.:09:26.

have served for that first set so this is a really tight match. And

:09:27.:09:31.

they will have noted what happened in the other group last night, Roger

:09:32.:09:35.

Federer defeating Novak Djokovic, the first time in three-year is, 38

:09:36.:09:42.

matches, that Djokovic has lost indoors. Federer in great form,

:09:43.:09:47.

winning this on six occasions, Novak going for four in a row. A superbly

:09:48.:09:52.

staged event at the O2 and we will be here until 2018 with this event

:09:53.:10:02.

at this time of the year. We are really coming down to the nub of

:10:03.:10:04.

this first set, 4-5. Somewhat surprised to see Murray has

:10:05.:10:22.

not used the serve and volley a little bit of a change-up, just a

:10:23.:10:24.

variation. Mr Murray challenging the call on

:10:25.:11:45.

the baseline, the ball was called out.

:11:46.:11:54.

first serve percentage down at 48%. Really need to find it now, this

:11:55.:12:11.

first serve. What a pleasing piece of matchplay

:12:12.:12:47.

from Rafa Nadal, absolutely going for it, three or four months ago he

:12:48.:12:51.

was pushing those back into play and hoping, he absolutely went after

:12:52.:12:53.

that second serve. Three set points. It is a break to love and it is the

:12:54.:13:37.

first set to Rafa Nadal. You cannot say it was against the run of play,

:13:38.:13:42.

he deserved that, 6-4. Murray will have to come back from a set down in

:13:43.:13:47.

this clash of the Titans here. He will have to dig deep in this match

:13:48.:13:52.

and his final group match and then next week we cannot wait for this.

:13:53.:13:59.

In 2004, Rafa won it for the first time. That moment was so special.

:14:00.:14:08.

Novak winning it in 2010. It gives you incentive and motivation. Last

:14:09.:14:14.

year, Roger won it. Definitely one of the big parts of my life as a

:14:15.:14:22.

tennis player. So did Stan. It was a dream. Can Andy and company follow

:14:23.:14:26.

suit, the Davis Cup final, Belgium against Great Britain from next

:14:27.:14:34.

Friday. Looking forward to that, such a big week and pressure on Andy

:14:35.:14:37.

Murray particularly but also on Jamie Murray in the doubles but they

:14:38.:14:41.

have done so well to get through to the final and you will be able to

:14:42.:14:46.

see that next week. Also coming up on radio five live tomorrow at

:14:47.:14:50.

8:30pm, the Wilderness years about the Davis Cup, you can hear from

:14:51.:14:55.

Andy Murray, John Lloyd and Tim Henman about the years that Great

:14:56.:14:58.

Britain have struggled in the Davis Cup and the struggles they have had.

:14:59.:15:05.

Right back to today and the preparation Andy has had, switching

:15:06.:15:08.

from clay to the hard court in the last week has maybe been playing on

:15:09.:15:13.

his mind and we talk about the immense pressure and he has said how

:15:14.:15:17.

much he wants to win this Davis Cup for Great Britain, immense pressure

:15:18.:15:21.

on his shoulders but he has to find a way to win, he is one of the great

:15:22.:15:26.

competitors but up against an inspired Rafael Nadal today, great

:15:27.:15:32.

match and super tennis as well. COMMENTATOR: It is an intense battle

:15:33.:15:37.

between these men, looking at their head to head, 21 times, Nadal

:15:38.:15:43.

winning 15 of those contests, losing six. Murray has won six times, in

:15:44.:15:51.

the Grand Slam championship, it is 7-2 in Nadal's favour. Earlier this

:15:52.:15:56.

year, Murray inflicted a heavy defeat on Spain, on clay in Madrid

:15:57.:16:06.

against his opponent here. Has to come back from a set down now. Any

:16:07.:16:11.

tactical changes you would call for here? I do not think there is

:16:12.:16:17.

anything wrong with the tactic Murray tried to implement, nothing

:16:18.:16:21.

wrong with his game or physically, he just has to focus is mined and

:16:22.:16:24.

cut out all the distractions away from the side of the court and focus

:16:25.:16:31.

on each point. If you looks to dictate, stay in the rally and hit

:16:32.:16:34.

the back and down the line when he gets the chance and play strong to

:16:35.:16:37.

the forehand and then he can turn this match around. If he continues

:16:38.:16:39.

to be distracted Rafa is too good. Was not happy with his second serve

:16:40.:17:20.

returns against David Ferrer the other day, he was quick to say so.

:17:21.:17:25.

Just having a little go at himself again there, Murray, about the

:17:26.:17:30.

length of the second serve returns. But of the court with nothing on it,

:17:31.:17:32.

did not come out of the middle. Is the mumbling going to Jonas

:17:33.:18:21.

Bjorkman. It is irrelevant who it is going to. Not if he is employing

:18:22.:18:30.

you. But then he is not focused on the job in hand.

:18:31.:18:59.

That is a tough point. Working last week from the back of the court with

:19:00.:19:15.

Ross Hutchins who just had the half court with Ross Hutchins who just

:19:16.:19:18.

had the hard court to defend but getting the heart rate over 180 and

:19:19.:19:23.

maintaining technique. Just the sort of rally where you see the work that

:19:24.:19:25.

they have done in the rally. " Should be doing that all day."

:19:26.:20:07.

Listen, you are paying, let us do it all day. It is a relevant but he is

:20:08.:20:13.

paying his coach for his trainer or anything, he is the one in control

:20:14.:20:19.

so if he is saying to do it all day then do it all day.

:20:20.:20:30.

Just one of those days for him at the moment, he is still in this

:20:31.:20:37.

match and striking the ball well and as fit as he has ever been, no

:20:38.:20:42.

problems with the back, reckons he has got

:20:43.:20:45.

problems with the back, reckons he for the Davis Cup next week.

:20:46.:20:58.

Would not be the first player to come off and the little bit

:20:59.:21:05.

embarrassed about the way things have

:21:06.:21:08.

embarrassed about the way things concentration is not the, that is

:21:09.:21:12.

the trouble with tennis, you are out there alone, no one to rely on. That

:21:13.:21:16.

is why we talk about the three elements of the game, technical,

:21:17.:21:23.

physical and mental. And right now, Murray has the technical and the

:21:24.:21:26.

physical but the mental side of things is letting him down. Nadal is

:21:27.:21:32.

taking advantage of it. And he is too good to be beaten if Murray is

:21:33.:21:43.

not 100% focused. The last game that Murray served of course was the

:21:44.:21:52.

break that took the set for Nadal. Evidence of a sharp match mind.

:21:53.:22:02.

And this dangerous five or ten minutes, if Murray is not as present

:22:03.:22:09.

as he needs to be in this match against somebody who does but

:22:10.:22:12.

however, he can turn it around at any second.

:22:13.:22:51.

Momentum, 14-4 out of the last 18 points, it is all with Rafa at the

:22:52.:22:58.

moment. Not often you see Murray lose eight

:22:59.:23:58.

points in a row on his serve will how would you like to ask the first

:23:59.:24:48.

question in a press conference after this? I think it will be a fairly

:24:49.:24:54.

simple one. What went wrong? The knock on effect of the mental

:24:55.:25:30.

side without the clarity of thought, Murray serving at 41% first

:25:31.:25:37.

serves. And only winning 56% when the first serve those in, 39% on the

:25:38.:25:39.

second serve. In Nadal's mind, when Murray is

:25:40.:26:29.

making an force is, he will be patient to stay in the rally and not

:26:30.:26:34.

miss but when he has got the opportunity to drive the forehand,

:26:35.:26:37.

he has the confidence and the platform in the match to go for it.

:26:38.:28:06.

A set and 3-0, Nadal, number five in the world at the moment. He has

:28:07.:28:17.

finished the year at number one before, Novak Djokovic has made that

:28:18.:28:22.

his home lately and he will be the end of the number one for the fourth

:28:23.:28:26.

time, if Andy Murray wins this match for the last group match against

:28:27.:28:30.

Stan Wawrinka he will finish the year at number two, that would be a

:28:31.:28:35.

high for him. Federer needs to go through this tournament unbeaten to

:28:36.:28:40.

perhaps take over Andy Murray but it is in Andy's hands at the moment.

:28:41.:28:49.

This is the top eight in the world. Andy has been distracted over the

:28:50.:29:00.

course of this match in the last 15 or 20 minutes, very disappointing

:29:01.:29:04.

indeed for him. Relevance for next week and the Davis Cup final,

:29:05.:29:10.

probably none. What do you think? No relevance at all but Murray will be

:29:11.:29:16.

frustrated and if this match continues in the same vein he will

:29:17.:29:21.

be disappointed with his performance. He has had a great year

:29:22.:29:27.

but he just needs to try and regain that focus. Not easy to do when you

:29:28.:29:38.

give your opponent a set and a break start, and Rafa playing better. We

:29:39.:29:42.

have focused on Andy for obvious reasons but Rafa making very few

:29:43.:29:47.

errors and hitting the ball powerfully from the back of the

:29:48.:29:50.

court and moving exceptionally well on a hard court.

:29:51.:30:28.

You would think this is a must win game for Andy Murray.

:30:29.:32:59.

When you get 40-0 up, you want to finish the game. Now it has turned

:33:00.:33:04.

into a bit of a scrap, this one. You've got to think you will get a

:33:05.:33:41.

look at Nadal's service game. Judged the top-spin well, Nadal, but

:33:42.:34:21.

his racket up nice and quickly. Murray played a nice, delicate

:34:22.:34:25.

slice. He had the easy approach shot.

:34:26.:37:46.

When you see Murray in this frame of mind, I always think, if he played

:37:47.:37:55.

his matches with nobody watching, nobody in his player's box, if they

:37:56.:38:00.

were sitting backstage, how that would affect his mindset. There was

:38:01.:38:16.

no one to talk to. The crowd are absolutely ready to support him. A

:38:17.:38:26.

lot of matches have been lost from this point of view, so for Rafael

:38:27.:38:31.

Nadal, he knows there is nothing to be taken for granted. A couple of

:38:32.:38:41.

decent swishes of the racket. There might be life in this match yet. He

:38:42.:38:49.

is always a great competitor, he will not give up on that. He has got

:38:50.:39:01.

great returns. Looking at the stats, Nadal has not served particularly

:39:02.:39:07.

well, we'll see if he can take advantage.

:39:08.:40:24.

This freezes him up to take more risks, because he is leading.

:40:25.:42:51.

It is a fourth break of serve in this match for Rafael Nadal, he is

:42:52.:43:07.

in complete control. He will serve for a victory over Andy Murray that

:43:08.:43:13.

will be important to him. This is a sign of this continued improvement.

:43:14.:43:18.

It has been a hungry performance. Competitive. If you had said before

:43:19.:43:27.

this group started that Nadal would win his opening match is against

:43:28.:43:30.

Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray for the loss of ten games...

:43:31.:43:43.

Looking to put the finishing touches on this match.

:43:44.:44:02.

The ball dropped in on the baseline.

:44:03.:45:32.

Whatever happens here, you can still go through to the semifinals.

:45:33.:46:47.

It has been a strange hour and a half in many ways for Rafael Nadal.

:46:48.:46:56.

So many superb competitive matches. This victory will be a very portable

:46:57.:46:58.

and for him. He has a match point. And that is it. Great to see Rafael

:46:59.:47:29.

Nadal back in London. Last time he was here it was so disappointing.

:47:30.:47:36.

Nadal back in London. Last time he returns and is playing with hunger

:47:37.:47:39.

and fire and finally some confidence. Never bad to see him

:47:40.:47:58.

play. One of the greats of our sport. No good today for Andy

:47:59.:48:08.

Murray, whose concentration certainly was not there. Had his

:48:09.:48:16.

moments, but ultimately not able to dig very deep. Very distracted

:48:17.:48:20.

performance at times. He has one more match to play against than the

:48:21.:48:32.

brink on Friday. I am glad to see he is taking the time to sign a few

:48:33.:48:37.

autographs. That is good, that is classy. He will qualify today if

:48:38.:48:54.

Stan Wawrinka defeats Ferrer or Ferrer defeats Stan Wawrinka in

:48:55.:49:00.

three sets. He is odds-on favourite to go through. As a match, this did

:49:01.:49:09.

not really exist. The number is not good enough anywhere down the

:49:10.:49:10.

left-hand side. Bratton Adele made so few unforced

:49:11.:49:19.

errors in that second set. He tightened things up. -- Rafael

:49:20.:49:21.

Nadal. Big victory for him in terms of his

:49:22.:49:28.

confidence. This man, with Olympic gold, all the

:49:29.:49:46.

Championships, he has never won this. I wonder if this is his week?

:49:47.:49:54.

Impressing his mum, his girlfriend, 70,000 people in here -- 17,000.

:49:55.:50:04.

Well done, that was a terrific performance. Can you give us your

:50:05.:50:10.

thoughts on the matter? First of all, thank you very much, I have

:50:11.:50:16.

been playing against a local player but always the crowd is

:50:17.:50:22.

unbelievable, respectful for everybody, just great to play here

:50:23.:50:27.

again. Thank you very much. For me, it is an important day, one of the

:50:28.:50:33.

best victories of the season, without any doubt. I am happy with

:50:34.:50:40.

the way that I am playing. There are so many layers to your matches. It

:50:41.:50:46.

was very tactical. What areas of the game work particularly well today? I

:50:47.:50:50.

think I played particularly well in general. I said the tactic is to

:50:51.:50:58.

play well. He is not a player you can think, I am going to hit against

:50:59.:51:03.

his forehand or backhand because he has all the shops. The only way to

:51:04.:51:07.

damage him is to play with high-intensity. I don't think I

:51:08.:51:17.

played with many mistakes. I am working hard. It is important for me

:51:18.:51:27.

to see these kinds of results. Well done today. We wish you the very

:51:28.:51:36.

best of luck in the next one. Rafael Nadal. You can hear from the warmth

:51:37.:51:41.

of the applause, how much they love him here and love seeing him back to

:51:42.:51:51.

his best. It does not mean it is over for Andy, he still has a chance

:51:52.:51:53.

to qualify for the semifinals. We have a very special ceremony on

:51:54.:52:13.

court, Lleyton Hewitt has announced he will retire this year, please

:52:14.:52:27.

welcome the ATP president who will present him with this award and

:52:28.:52:33.

please welcome John McEnroe, Boris Becker and Mats Wilander. It is

:52:34.:52:41.

great to see them come on court. This is a special presentation to

:52:42.:52:47.

Lleyton Hewitt, who is retiring from the game at the Australian Open in

:52:48.:52:57.

January. Please welcome onto court, Lleyton Hewitt.

:52:58.:54:26.

I have always admired him a lot. He has acted on court. He is what every

:54:27.:54:40.

young kid should look up to. The kid of six or nine years old. I would be

:54:41.:54:45.

getting them to watch. He will look back on his career and think that he

:54:46.:54:57.

gave it everything. Has been very good first really in tennis.

:54:58.:55:01.

Everybody respects him for what he's done and achieved. I wish him all

:55:02.:55:09.

the best on his retirement and congratulations on his career. And

:55:10.:55:19.

Chris will now present Lleyton Hewitt with his frame.

:55:20.:55:39.

This must be a very proud moment for you. How do you look back on such an

:55:40.:55:52.

amazing career? I feel old. I am lucky enough to sit courtside. It is

:55:53.:55:57.

how the game keeps evolving over the years. I look back at when I was

:55:58.:56:05.

able to play in the Masters Cup. Hold up the trophy. I'm looking

:56:06.:56:13.

forward to finishing at the Australian Open, I would like to

:56:14.:56:20.

thank Chris and the whole tour for organising this for me today, it has

:56:21.:56:27.

been such a big part of my life and I have loved every minute of it out

:56:28.:56:30.

here. Thank you everyone for supporting me. Absolutely, and we

:56:31.:56:36.

wish you all the best at yours truly supporting me. Absolutely, and we

:56:37.:56:42.

and open -- at the Australian Open. What are your plans? I have been

:56:43.:56:46.

appointed the Australian Davis Cup captain, I am still

:56:47.:56:52.

appointed the Australian Davis Cup to work with some talented players

:56:53.:56:57.

appointed the Australian Davis Cup coming forward, I loved being out on

:56:58.:57:01.

appointed the Australian Davis Cup the court and I think I've got

:57:02.:57:14.

something to offer. He has been such a great ambassador for the game, and

:57:15.:57:28.

what a record he's got. He has had some great moments and is one of the

:57:29.:57:34.

great competitors. One was when he tried to do the chest bump. He even

:57:35.:57:47.

made that competitive. Whoever plays him will need to give body and mind

:57:48.:57:52.

to knock him out. Does John McEnroe think he is going to be on court for

:57:53.:58:00.

this event? You don't know. For Lleyton Hewitt, he has had an

:58:01.:58:04.

incredible career. A horrible opponent, I hated playing him. I

:58:05.:58:09.

don't know how many times we played, I only beat him once. When you talk

:58:10.:58:16.

about success and maximising your potential, it's an incredible feat,

:58:17.:58:20.

what he was able to achieve in the game when power was starting to

:58:21.:58:25.

dominate. One of his big jobs now is to look after Nick Carey is -- Nick

:58:26.:58:34.

Krygios. We will see him to look after Nick Carey is -- Nick

:58:35.:58:43.

quite some time. He achieved against the odds because he is not built

:58:44.:58:49.

like the other players, he is quite short, quite slight, he had other

:58:50.:58:50.

weapons. Very much so. He came on short, quite slight, he had other

:58:51.:59:01.

the scene in Adelaide. You look that his game and thought he was a good

:59:02.:59:05.

player but is he going to go on to become World War I? I was not sure

:59:06.:59:13.

-- world number one. His consistency from the back of the court, he was

:59:14.:59:20.

very quick to get the ball past. That was the recipe for success

:59:21.:59:23.

very quick to get the ball past. him. But

:59:24.:59:26.

very quick to get the ball past. has had a catalogue of injuries.

:59:27.:59:32.

very quick to get the ball past. will be fun to watch

:59:33.:59:38.

very quick to get the ball past. time. It has evolved because they

:59:39.:59:42.

are all part of a time. It has evolved because they

:59:43.:59:56.

the information from them. Yellow that they how the game is run, they

:59:57.:00:04.

know how it goes. Take advice from people who have been there. There

:00:05.:00:09.

are governing bodies here. Andy Murray was saying, we have appointed

:00:10.:00:16.

someone who does not know tennis. Andy Murray says he does not know

:00:17.:00:32.

tennis so there we go. A lot of us asked about who we would want to

:00:33.:00:36.

apply for the job, somebody knows a lot about tennis, a lot of people at

:00:37.:00:40.

the LTA, from different sports and you need someone who understands the

:00:41.:00:45.

sport. Michael Downey asked me to get involved in that process and at

:00:46.:00:52.

that stage. So it is your fault? Not yet but you can blame me. He said up

:00:53.:00:57.

until the Olympics in 2016, there are a lot of people they would like

:00:58.:01:01.

to talk to involved in different positions and they are reluctant to

:01:02.:01:05.

talk because they do not want to distract their athletes. That is why

:01:06.:01:09.

the interim position has been put in place. Once the Olympics takes place

:01:10.:01:13.

in 2016, there will be a list of people interested in the job and I

:01:14.:01:18.

would be the first to say if it would be great to have a tennis

:01:19.:01:22.

person. You want them to have a good understanding of the game. It is

:01:23.:01:28.

about business antennas, there are candidates already? It is about

:01:29.:01:33.

participation, we focus so much on performance, I do not know who has

:01:34.:01:37.

thrown themselves into the hat, I go a little bit blank when it comes to

:01:38.:01:41.

this stuff because over 40 years or so I have heard it all. I am very

:01:42.:01:45.

keen on participation getting the numbers are, we have Tim, Greg and

:01:46.:01:49.

Andy Murray in the Davis Cup final and we have this, and participation

:01:50.:01:53.

figures have either trodden water or going down. Tennis is not the only

:01:54.:02:00.

sport where this is a problem. Young people's attention is taken by

:02:01.:02:04.

mobiles and tablets and everything but that is a battle that needs to

:02:05.:02:09.

be one for me as well as performance. What about Andy and

:02:10.:02:17.

Rafa, Andy, it reflects this group format, the way we have seen it with

:02:18.:02:21.

Stan Wawrinka and Djokovic last night, it does not matter if you do

:02:22.:02:25.

not win one of these group matches because you can lose and get through

:02:26.:02:28.

to the semifinals. Not the easy route but it is possible. On

:02:29.:02:33.

reflection of Andy's performance, that would be the route I would

:02:34.:02:38.

take, bad day at the office, forget about it, he got off to a good

:02:39.:02:42.

start, breaking in the first game but when he lost his serve to go

:02:43.:02:47.

1-1, mentally he was distracted and talking to the box and his

:02:48.:02:51.

performance went down. The beauty of the round robin format, he still has

:02:52.:02:56.

a chance of going through to the semifinals. It will be a question of

:02:57.:03:01.

pushing this to one side and saying this would be your next match,

:03:02.:03:06.

playing Stan Wawrinka and go out with a much better mindset and

:03:07.:03:09.

clearer game plan and execute that and get through to the semifinals.

:03:10.:03:13.

Wood he wants to avoid Djokovic in the semifinals so he wants to come

:03:14.:03:20.

second in the group. That is the tactic. But Rafa, maybe not back to

:03:21.:03:26.

his best but getting pretty close. He has talked about the steps he

:03:27.:03:31.

needs to take, getting victories against the big players is the way

:03:32.:03:34.

to get confidence back, he played the big points well, the break at

:03:35.:03:38.

the end of the first set was wonderful, dominating with his

:03:39.:03:41.

forehand again in the getting length of the forehand which he has not

:03:42.:03:45.

done for a while and he is going for it. You have to play to win and get

:03:46.:03:49.

those wins, that is the only way confidence will come back. He

:03:50.:03:53.

appears to be getting there which is wonderful for the game. That proved

:03:54.:03:58.

his variety of shots, hitting from the back and moving his opponent

:03:59.:04:02.

around and that lovely drop shot we have seen so often from Rafa. You

:04:03.:04:09.

look at who would get the upper hand early on in the rallies and who

:04:10.:04:12.

could push their opponent further behind the baseline and that is

:04:13.:04:16.

where I was impressed with how he hit his backhand crosscourt, this

:04:17.:04:19.

was a second serve return to get three set points and once he regains

:04:20.:04:24.

that confidence in his game and plays points a bit better and be

:04:25.:04:28.

more aggressive and go closer to the line, it was a disappointing

:04:29.:04:34.

performance from Andy but we should not let that detract from how well

:04:35.:04:39.

Rafa change direction well and played a complete match. It will

:04:40.:04:43.

surprise no one at the top of the game, Novak, Roger, they have seen

:04:44.:04:47.

it before but I never thought we would see Rafa struggling but he did

:04:48.:04:51.

this year and he has had to respond. He loves the game and practice, and

:04:52.:04:56.

there is no substitute for wins, this was a big one for him today.

:04:57.:05:02.

Andy is often so good in the long rallies but the long ones like this

:05:03.:05:07.

were being won by Rafa. You talk about the long rallies, Andy will

:05:08.:05:11.

usually get the upper hand because he is so good, he is one of the

:05:12.:05:17.

game's greats. To me, Rafa was impressive, he stayed in with his

:05:18.:05:21.

backhand crosscourt a lot, and when he could get his forehand into play,

:05:22.:05:26.

that is when he would be at his most aggressive. Two steps forward and

:05:27.:05:29.

takes the ball just inside the baseline and change direction up the

:05:30.:05:34.

line. That is as good as Rafa can play on an indoor hard court. How

:05:35.:05:39.

did our poll go in the end as to whether he would win another slam, I

:05:40.:05:45.

cannot imagine he will not get himself into position,

:05:46.:05:47.

quarterfinals, semifinals, once he does that, getting comfortable on

:05:48.:05:52.

the forehand and the defence of the backhand, why not? We talked about

:05:53.:05:57.

the comments he made in Miami and getting nervous on the big points

:05:58.:06:01.

and pointing out that he has not beaten the big three this year which

:06:02.:06:05.

is unheard of until today. He just showed on the big points how strong

:06:06.:06:11.

he is and strong mentally again. Very much so, when you reflect back

:06:12.:06:14.

to that press conference in March, he was brutally honest and it was

:06:15.:06:19.

slightly surprisingly an athlete because it was almost as if you

:06:20.:06:22.

saying there is a weakness your armoury. He is not honest and says

:06:23.:06:27.

everything is fine, everyone will look and say that he is not, missing

:06:28.:06:31.

shots that he never used to miss. But that sums up Rafa, what you see

:06:32.:06:38.

is what you get. He has not necessarily changed anything away

:06:39.:06:42.

from the court, he has always worked fantastically hard but now he has

:06:43.:06:46.

gained a bit of momentum in tournaments. He has played some

:06:47.:06:49.

better matches, the final in Basel where he lost to Federer and be

:06:50.:06:53.

confidence coming back to his game and that will be reflected in the

:06:54.:06:58.

way he plays the big points. Andy has to go back and regroup and play

:06:59.:07:03.

Stan Wawrinka. World number two is still up for grabs, you need is two

:07:04.:07:07.

wins so he needs to beat Stan and Federer is now still unbeaten, if he

:07:08.:07:11.

goes unbeaten through to the final, he would be world number two. This

:07:12.:07:16.

match, you can say is over but Stan has something to prove as well, he

:07:17.:07:22.

played poorly against Rafa, Rafa has the hex on people so far. Do the

:07:23.:07:27.

press, stay patient with all of the stupid questions we ask and come

:07:28.:07:32.

back on Friday and he will be fine. Speak for yourself. You ask the

:07:33.:07:37.

smart ones soon. We are going to talk Davis Cup now and Jamie Murray

:07:38.:07:43.

will come in and chat with us. Am I out? We will do musical chairs but

:07:44.:07:49.

we have the big Davis Cup final coming up next week. In 2004, Rafa

:07:50.:07:55.

won it for the first time. That moment was maximum. Novak in 2010.

:07:56.:08:05.

It inspires you to play your best. Last year, Roger won it. Won one of

:08:06.:08:10.

the big moments of my life. So did stand. For me it was a dream, to

:08:11.:08:18.

play for your country is so special. This year, can Andy and company

:08:19.:08:22.

follow suit? Belgium across Great Britain across the BBC from next

:08:23.:08:28.

Friday. We cannot wait, what a journey it has been and we will be

:08:29.:08:32.

heading off for that next week and coming up tomorrow at 8:30pm on

:08:33.:08:37.

radio five live you can listen to the wilderness years. Tim Henman,

:08:38.:08:41.

John Lloyd and the wilderness years. Tim Henman,

:08:42.:08:47.

years gone by in the Davis Cup but it will all get a bit nerve wracking

:08:48.:08:52.

next week. I am nervous, I don't know how you are feeling Jamie. I am

:08:53.:08:54.

looking forward to it, it will know how you are feeling Jamie. I am

:08:55.:09:01.

great week for the guys. A lots of hard work has gone into it in the

:09:02.:09:06.

last few years since Leon took over, we were in the lower divisions

:09:07.:09:08.

of the over, we were in the lower divisions

:09:09.:09:14.

in a lot of hard work and the team deserves to be in this position. You

:09:15.:09:17.

have played in some crucial doubles matches, some of them very tense,

:09:18.:09:23.

which one has been the worst? Won the Australian one, against France

:09:24.:09:28.

we played well but Australia we played well but it was such an epic

:09:29.:09:33.

match, peaks and troughs and ups and downs. We knew we had to win to make

:09:34.:09:42.

it happen and somehow we managed to get through in five sets. The fourth

:09:43.:09:47.

set was pretty tense, wasn't it? Yes, I've weigh myself of that,

:09:48.:09:53.

letting them come back into it, because I knew Andy had to play

:09:54.:09:57.

singles next day and he was battling a bit with his back and I felt bad

:09:58.:10:03.

for keeping him out there on court. He played an amazing three sets

:10:04.:10:08.

against Bernard Tomic. It shows what the Davis Cup means because Sam

:10:09.:10:16.

Groth, he got so tense in that fifth set alongside Lleyton Hewitt. Yes,

:10:17.:10:21.

the other 48 weeks of the year, you are out there as an individual but

:10:22.:10:25.

when you are playing in Davis Cup, you are representing your country

:10:26.:10:29.

and all of your team-mates on the side of the court. It is a different

:10:30.:10:33.

and all of your team-mates on the type of pressure and it is amazing

:10:34.:10:36.

what we talk about, the journey the British team have had this year but

:10:37.:10:38.

it goes further back as Jamie talked British team have had this year but

:10:39.:10:41.

about with Leon getting involved and being Davis Cup captain. There have

:10:42.:10:48.

been bumps along the road but the team has been incredible and the

:10:49.:10:51.

opportunity they have now in Belgium is incredibly exciting. As we all

:10:52.:10:56.

know, home court advantage is important so we should emphasise the

:10:57.:11:00.

challenge of going away and playing indoors on clay will not be easy.

:11:01.:11:05.

There will be outnumbered 9-1 in the crowds with most of the audience

:11:06.:11:09.

being for Belgium but it will be great to watch. That goes again, you

:11:10.:11:15.

have had three home ties and now you can't see those wonderful fans, I am

:11:16.:11:22.

sure a few Brits will go. We were due an away tie, it was great to

:11:23.:11:26.

play at home to get to this stage but another challenge for us and it

:11:27.:11:31.

will be difficult away from home and playing on clay will not be so easy

:11:32.:11:38.

but the team believes in itself and we have come a long way. We want to

:11:39.:11:44.

finish the job. It is huge, you sound so relaxed like it is another

:11:45.:11:49.

tournament, Davis Cup final, last in the final in 1978, not one it since

:11:50.:11:58.

1936. Andy has talked a bit. But are you feeling the pressure as it gets

:11:59.:12:03.

closer? People keep talking about it and asking so it is on your mind

:12:04.:12:10.

that I have had this tournament to focus on as well which is a big end

:12:11.:12:15.

of year event for us which gives my mind off it a bit. When everything

:12:16.:12:20.

is done here, I will turn my attention to Belgium. Who is the

:12:21.:12:24.

captain when you are on court with Andy? I think it is me if I am

:12:25.:12:31.

honest. For the most part until I start suggesting where he serves and

:12:32.:12:37.

then it changes. You seem to have a great knowledge, you did not play a

:12:38.:12:41.

lot of doubles together? Not so much when we were growing up but we

:12:42.:12:45.

played quite a lot since we have both been on tour, I have even

:12:46.:12:52.

helped getting into some of the Masters tournaments. We know exactly

:12:53.:12:57.

how each other is going to play, strengths and weaknesses on the

:12:58.:12:59.

court and what to expect from each other and that gives you confidence

:13:00.:13:04.

and calmness for when you go out there. We wish you the best of luck

:13:05.:13:09.

for here and next week, we are all looking forward to it, we will be

:13:10.:13:14.

back tomorrow at 2pm on BBC Two, Roger Federer against Kei Nishikori

:13:15.:13:19.

but today, it was not a vintage Murray but it was certainly Rafa at

:13:20.:13:23.

his best, we hope you enjoyed it, goodbye.

:13:24.:13:27.

COMMENTATOR: Clash of champions, we are settling in nicely. It is great

:13:28.:13:38.

hitting, all Rafa at the moment. Murray Dixon self out of the hole,

:13:39.:13:45.

the first set to Rafa Nadal. He is in complete control in this group

:13:46.:13:52.

match. And that is it, great to see Rafa

:13:53.:13:53.

some familiar faces are coming your way.
