Final: Murray v Djokovic Tennis: World Tour Finals

Good evening. We are down to the final tournament match of the year

and the stakes could not be higher. One match for number one. It does

not get any better than this. The dream of ending the year as world

number one continues. An all-time great and he may be the greatest

when all is said and done. It will be an amazing atmosphere and

special match. There will be a lot of excitement, a lot of emotions. I

have given myself a chance against some of the best players in the

history of sport. In the history of tennis we have never have the two

best players battle for world number one at the last match of the season.

What a fitting finale to an extraordinary year at the Barclays

ATP World Tour Finals with the two best players in the world bidding

for the trophy and world number one ranking. Tim Henman and one of the

legends of the sport are with us, Stefan Edberg. Thanks for joining

us. Is this what tennis is all about, the big matches? This is a

grand finale, the two best players of the year playing for the number

one spot for the year in the ATP finals, so I am delighted to see

that. Did you relish those matches? Playing against the best players,

that is what you thrived on. That is how you really enjoyed the tennis.

The big moments, that is what you remember the most. Did you love

playing in this event? I liked playing in the Masters as it was in

my days. Always the best players, but at the same time it was a tough

tournament. You could not have a slow start. You needed to get going

and keep on playing. Every statistic you look at, it is amazing, Murray

and Djokovic. The year has been a year of two halves with Djokovic

dominant until the French Open. 16,000 points, 8000 points in front

of Murray and in the second half, Andy Murray has been impressive,

Wimbledon, he won the Olympics, that did not count towards rankings. We

have kept our fingers crossed and hoped this could be the final

matchup. They got through to the final by different routes that is

great we have this match to look forward to. Andy Murray had a tough

match against Kei Nishikori, and a tough match yesterday against Milos

Raonic, three hours, 38 minutes, and he had to save a match point. ANDREW

CASTLE: We will have a tie-break to decide the place in the final. You

are kidding me. Match point saved. Now the match point on his own

serve. Now he has hit a slice along. Murray has seen three match points

come and go. Match point. Milos Raonic. It is match point, Murray.

And it is all over. A year of firsts for Andy Murray continues. It was a

hard match. It was not that it was physically hard, it was mentally

tough. It was pretty stressful. You can probably tell from the

atmosphere behind me, the players are making their way. Andy Murray

will have thousands of fans at the O2 but he has many supporters around

the world. Come on, Andy, you can do it. The boys are cheering you on in

India. Me, Jamie and the boys will be rooting for you. Good luck, Andy,

you have always been our number one. Go and win it. Good luck, tonight,

hope you smash it. You can do this. You are world number one and should

stay number one. It is Honey G. When you say Andy, you say? I do not

know. Everybody has taken him, everybody appreciating him so much.

It has been a journey. When he came on the scene, 18, 19, always a

confrontational character. But when you sense the atmosphere here it is

incredible. It has taken time for people to warm to him. Novak

Djokovic bidding to finish as world number one for the third consecutive

year, his fifth in six years. The five-time tournament champion from

Serbia. Novak Djokovic! CHEERING.

Ladies and gentlemen, making his eighth appearance at the Barclays

ATP World Tour Finals, winner of 43 titles, including 14 ATP Masters

1000s and three Grand Slam singles crowns, the 2016 Wimbledon champion

and the world number one, from Great Britain, Andy Murray!

CHEERING. That was pretty special. A standing

ovation for the players. They deserve it. It will be a great

match, an interesting match. Andy has played long matches. We will see

how he copes today. This is his chance today. Looking at the match

against Milos Raonic, you worry how much more he has left. It is amazing

to think with one of the biggest servers, playing in an indoor match

going on three hours 45 minutes and on the back of three hours and 20

against Kei Nishikori. Djokovic came through his semifinal in an hour,

6-1, 6-1 against Nishikori. Murray loves that element. He will need to

go out and put in one epic performance and if anyone can at

this stage of the year it is him. The match yesterday, he battled so

hard. The end was dramatic. It was an extraordinary match, probably one

of the better matches I have watched in a long time. It had drama. Tens

at times, playing great at times. It was a great ending to the match.

Fantastic. It really was. The Hawk-Eye system works on this court.

Any questions? Heads. This is tales. Tails. That is a photograph to

treasure. What a moment to take that one home. Two great players bidding

for the number one spot. We will hear from the players. Yesterday,

Andy proved he has a knack of getting himself out of seemingly

impossible situations. I did not expect to be in this position seven

weeks ago. I have won every match I have played since then and I am

still not there. I said it would be extremely difficult to do. At least

I have given myself a chance. Against one of the best players in

the world, one of the best players in the history of our sport. Even

though you have not played him since Roland Garros, will you approach

this match is a different state of mind? My mind will be the same. The

matches played in Madrid, Rome and Roland Garros, they were tough

matches, hard-fought matches. I am playing better tennis than I was

then. The way you approach the match is the same, you go out with the

idea you are going to win. And, hopefully with a successful game

plan. We have seen him play Kei Nishikori and Milos Raonic but the

biggest test is today because he will be made to work so hard. I

could not hear the interview, it was so loud in here, but I think I got

the gist of it. They go back such a long time. They met in junior tennis

at 11 and to have had many battles and though each other's games. They

have similar games and matchup will stop Djokovic has come out on top

more, but I think Murray, the way he has come through the rankings,

serving his time with Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal and Djokovic and he has

got to number one and wants to hang onto it. I know he will lay it all

on the line out there. What impresses you most about Andy? He

has been working so hard, for so long. He is a fighter. He has been

challenged with the great players from Federer, Rafa Nadal, Djokovic.

Winning Wimbledon twice, the Olympics. He is turning out to be a

great player and here he is today with a great chance of finishing at

number one, which will be very special to him, if he does, but it

will not be easy. Novak has won here before and I am sure he wants to win

again. People talking about the slump he had but he is getting

better with every match here. Eating Kei Nishikori 6-1, 6-1.

I try to influence what I can at this present moment, getting myself

ready and in the right state of mind, preparing mentally,

physically, emotionally for whatever is going to happen. Surely there

will be a lot of excitement and emotions and that is always the case

when the play. It is a great occasion, the O2 Arena, last match

of year. There is a lot on the line but my mindset is just right now, in

this moment. He may have had problems, they have been documented,

but this week, he looks like he has the eye of the champion again. That

is right. When you set the bar as high as he did, winning four Grand

Slams in a row, there is only one way to go and that is probably down

but he made the final of the US Open and won Masters Series in Canada. He

had surprising losses. In his match against Dominic Thiem, losing the

first set, but after that, he found his rhythm. Beating him 6-0, 6-2 in

the second and third. He has been number one a long time and will not

give up the ranking without a fight. They love their matches and to

challenge and Djokovic is desperate to get the number one ranking back.

You have had rivalries with Ivan Lendl, Boris Becker. Having the

number one is important. It is so important because you will not get

many chances. That is what counts, at least it did to me, finishing

number one for the year. I did it two years in a row and almost three

years and could not make it that year and was disappointed. This will

be a final showdown. There is the next year coming up and there will

be more chances. Andy, 122 weeks Djokovic was world number one and he

has only had it two weeks, he is desperate to hold onto it. The

context of being number one. Andy has achieved that but there is a

difference between being number one and finishing the year number one.

It does not need us to explain the importance of this match. It is best

of three sets and they have leave it all on the line and see who comes

out on top. This match means so much to them. Andy Murray, you have to

think, can his body get back out on court and have enough left in the

tank? As I see it, the last match of the season, he is probably tired,

but he is strong enough. It is more of a mental game to pull through

here. I think he can do it but it will be tough. He will probably work

really hard, but more of a mental game. As far as Murray is concerned,

in practice today he was going for the shots. He does not want long

rallies. Look at the different scenarios how he can come up with a

strategy. The longer the match, it will favour Djokovic. Andy Murray

has to look to be proactive to take the ball on and go for his shots. I

think the crowd have a part to play, to lift Andy and give him that extra

energy. In the past, we have seen Djokovic frustrated when he is not

crowd favourite. If that can give Andy Murray the extra per cent, so

be it. He has Ivan Lendl in his corner and you know him well. He is

a bit scary? Lendl is Lendl and will always be the same, but he is a

character. He has been good for Andy and he is probably happy to have him

in the box. Boris Becker is with Djokovic and they have done an

amazing job. Djokovic did not become a bad player overnight, he had those

problems. He has worked hard mentally to get himself back. He has

not changed as a tennis player physically and technically since

Wimbledon but mentally he has not been as focused. There has been an

element of frustration in his game. We have seen how he has been touchy

in the press conference with questions about his attitude. Those

are elements Andy Murray will have in the back of his mind to go out

there and be as resilient and give 100% and see what happens. We are

set for this match. Stefan Edberg, who will you pick as a winner? I

have to be pretty honest and thinking about it I think there is a

slight advantage for Djokovic in this final but it would be nice for

Murray to win it. Djokovic has won it many times before. Lovely to see

and his fans, this is best of three sets, not five. Hours extra on court

compared to his opponent, we will see how that tells.

An important point for Andy Murray to win.

The reason why I said the first set is important, obviously Murray is

exhausted. Djokovic has won 19 and lost zero against Murray when he has

won the first set. Mr Djokovic has challenged the call.

Pretty confident, I think. Standing his ground on the deuce court. Down

the middle and ace. Two double faults in the first game.

You do not know whether it is nerves, I doubt it. Settle the body

down. Been through a bit of a trauma with three hours and 40 against

Milos Raonic just yesterday. Ladies and gentlemen, as a courtesy

to the players, do not use flash photography during the point.

And Djokovic disturbed as much no doubt by the fact that... That is

the issue. They go on automatically. You do not even realise when you are

looking. Probably upset that he is missing the ball. He has an opponent

to double faulted twice and then lost every point when the ball was

in play. You might think the players are being pedantic with flashlight

photography, but the lighting in the stadium, it is darker within the

crowd, so when someone uses the flashy really does distract you.

Stretching back to that magnificent Wimbledon final of 2013, Djokovic

has won 13 of the 15 matches played against Andy Murray. He has won

three of the four matches this year, including the Australian and French

Open finals. Three straight Wimbledon finals

against our studio guest, Stefan Edberg, Boris Becker.

This week there is a direct comparison to make between the

players. They both played los Raonic and Kei Nishikori, the two longest

matches ever in London, Murray against those opponents. Djokovic

beat one of them one and one. I think this would be a diverse and

effort, possibly the best of the year, if Murray can come through

under these circumstances in this match, to claim world number one,

with everything that has happened this week.

I think that it really is a reflection on his career how he has

had so many hurdles in front of him and he has kept finding a way to get

over them. This is certainly a high hurdle to finish with.

Those muscles on rallies like this will be tested. Contracting and

squeezing the lactic acid around the system. Djokovic will look to

stretch Murray early on. That is lucky, because not just a

dead net cord, it looked like it was going out.

Yes, it was. Just lengthening the game, Djokovic. Very early stages,

still looking at Murray and wondering how he is physically.

And that is away. Another hold for Andy Murray. The final of the

Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. We have talked about Ivan Lendl and

Boris Becker but Jamie Delgado has made a massive difference to Andy

Murray. SUE BARKER: Top with this part of the team. The resilience he

has under these sorts of matches and mental toughness and physical

toughness that he has shown for a long time, but yesterday was

something special. You have been hitting with him, how was he?

Hitting the ball great, super-confident. Part of the issue

today will be to see how fresh he is but I have seen him in tough

situations where he finds that little bit extra. I think today will

be a great data show that again. It looked like he was attacking the

ball in practice. It is something he has worked on this year, to be more

aggressive and when you play Novak, the matches he has done well against

him, he has dictated play, using his forehand in the middle of the court.

He had a tough group and a tough match against Kei Nishikori and

Milos Raonic and Djokovic sell-through, it has to be an issue?

It is, we cannot hide from that. But he has played excellent tennis,

beating three top five players this week. In terms of freshness,

Djokovic had to be easier path but we feel Andy has been playing the

better tennis the last few months and that will give him an edge in

confidence. He has won four straight

tournaments. That is your old schoolmates. Did you go to school?

Briefly. I think Jamie was there even more briefly. He did a great

job with Muller, taking him to top 50. And joined Andy Murray 's team

in March which coincided with his fortunes turning.

Woody Harrelson is here. Sitting next to Chris Kermode's Y. Chris is

the boss of the ATP. Clive Owen is down there. He would

have been a good James Bond. Sebastien Schweinsteiger, the four

order is there somewhere. -- the footballer.

We have seen in the past months Djokovic a little bit distracted on

the court, but he has his game face on tonight.

Great news for Murray, if Djokovic is missing those. 15-15, second

serve. He has not totally settled, has he?

Judy Murray is here and his dad is getting married in a couple of

weeks' time. 56% first serve percentage this

week. And he pops one out wired and takes

another game. This is the start he wanted, certainly. How do you think

Do get in touch. How do you assess the opening stages, Tim?

He's done very well. We saw in his opening games very tight. He's done

a good job. Holding on to his serve. At the other side of the net

Djokovic has looked very efficient. I don't think either player will be

unhappy with how the match has started. It will be interesting to

see who can really create the first opportunity. 15-30, a break point

and look to stamp their authority on this first set.

Hasn't lost in London this year. Andy Murray, Wimbledon champion for

the second time. Queens' champion for a second time. Beating Raonic.

Could have easily have lost to Raonic. He did the good thing and

gave us the final that we wanted in this magnificent entertainment

venue. Nine million people come here each year to watch music and sport.

It is pretty easy to get here as well, particularly on the Jubilee

Line to North Greenwich. Can Murray mount a challenge against

the world number two? Again a good forehand from Murray.

Djokovic left the ball in the middle of the court and it can be the one

shot that's a little bit more erratic for Murray.

Djokovic has only lost one point on serve.

The sound of the feet, the rubber against the floor here - gorgeous.

. Even though Murray lost points and with a backhand, he was really

crunching the ball. Crunching the backhand some of the

time, but that was a vicious slice. The ball kept so low. Djokovic

couldn't get underneath it. Second break point for Murray.

Credit where credit's due. Not an easy volley there, but Djokovic

really stayed down well on the ball. Does that catch the? He's let that

go. He didn't feel the need, so Djokovic

is guilty of ball watching there. Amazing.

He's hit it so low on the racket that it has fallen right up.

Should never have missed a shot like that.

This was the second serve. Murray's questioning. He could have gone and

looked at it. At the end of the day, he's closest to the ball. Look at.

This it would have been another break point.

You don't like to stop and if you are sure, how can you be on a serve?

What a return from Andy Murray! Djokovic managed to knock it back to

a length. That was a fascinating ten minutes. Two break points for

Murray. Unable to capitalise.

The second serve at deuce was out. Murray knows that. There's nothing

he can do about it now. It is important he really engages in this

game, especially having a few chances.

It has been a fantastic starter Andy Murray. All the questions about his

physicality, so compliments to him, his physical team, his dietary

regime has worked. The rub-downs. It is all the training that has gone on

before. Still talking about that second serve which could have been

called a double fault. He did not overrule that one. Credit to the

team. It has been a great for British tennis Er as well.

Jo Konta. 67, Dan Evans, that is a huge rise. And Andy Murray.

Carl Edmond will work with Andy Murray, which is such an advantage,

isn't it? To have someone of Murray's calibre,

to see him in the off season, when they go to their block training to

Miami, I am sure he's been a big influrns on his career and Jo Konta,

she has a great influence on the women's game.

Carl Edmond has a couple of weeks of training. Just physicality and he's

come back from shark diving. He's got the video to prove it, with

Great Whites in South Africa. Murray verses Djokovic. Final of

London, 2016. Djokovic has restored faith in his

smash. A little bit off balance. Too much

left-hand dragged it into the net. Murray has established himself in

another Djokovic service game. Looking for a second serve to really

jump on and dominate the points. Wonderful forehand, a break of

serve. It is Murray 5-3 up. Serving for the set.

This was an enormous drain on his resources, mentally and physically.

He came out here. He looked white on the court, drained of energy. This

is superb. 42 minutes and, I wouldn't say he looks unbelievably

fresh, but he's moving so well. Never beaten Djokovic indoors.

Doesn't want to trade blows with Murray, does he? He's making

mistakes. 'S that is Murray's resilience, how

stubborn he is when they get into the backhand exchanges across court.

Murray is saying, I am not going to miss.

Errors are flying because of the man he is playing. Three quarters of an

hour of great intensity in the final match of the season-ending

championships. They are playing for the top spot.

Well, that is, for me, something of a turn up. I do not know how you

feel about it at home, but that is a fantastic performance from Murray.

If there was ever illustration of the fitness regime he has gone

through for years that is it because most people who are ordinary humans

cannot do this. He has had the two longest matches in the history of

these championships this week and he comes out and produces these

numbers, Tim. I am impressed. It is impressive. Prior to this match,

trying to come up with a game plan of how Murray could have an impact,

I felt in my heart I wanted to -- him to win. But the way Djokovic has

been playing, how he has been moving the ball around, but Murray loves a

challenge and loves to prove people wrong and the first set was

phenomenal. He kept his nose in front in the first seven games and

created opportunities. Two double faults in the first game of the

match and after that, not blemish free, but moving well. It was one

week ago the tournament started. Djokovic got is under way by losing

the first set to debutant Dominic Thiem from Austria and he came back.

Djokovic has not won four straight titles here without knowing how to

get the job done. Defeating Roger Federer in 2012 and Rafa Nadal in

2013. In 2014 Roger Federer was unable to

take to the court. And last year, Federer again. This is a man who

this year held all four grand slam championships after winning the

French Open. That is the sort of man Andy Murray is playing against here.

From the point of view of Djokovic, really important stages, the early

part of the second set, he is serving first and leads a couple of

strong service games to get his nose in front.

Murray is going to be saying three games in a row, first set, let's

keep the momentum going. An early break of serve.

Early break of serve and let's wrap this up in under four hours!

LAUGHTER. We would like to see a classic, but

we will take two sets. There have been years where you

would not necessarily want to hit the Djokovic backhand but he has

made as many mistakes in this first 50 minutes as I have seen on the

backhand. Djokovic has not had many free

points on his serve in the last few service games but that was a big

serve at the right time. Has he caught the line? He has. The

shot he used well against Wawrinka but Wawrinka does not move as well

as Djokovic and it finds the line. There is still room in the game for

changing the pace. Backhand slices from both players have produced

results in this match for both players.

As soon as Djokovic goes to the slice, Murray is moving to his left

to try to bring his forehand into play.

Backhand to backhand, Murray is winning that battle. That fella had

a backhand. That was a poor miss from Djokovic.

Murray trying to play the ball short but it sat up. Djokovic could have

gone either way but made the unforced error. He would love a

second serve. A set and a break, Murray. Eight

minute game. And on the first serve gets the ball back into play and

another error from Djokovic and it is a sign of the respect and esteem

he holds the Murray ground strokes in that the errors are coming. And

the movement Murray has on the court. Djokovic I think needs to

bellow, throw a racket, something, because he feels he is being

inhibited. He does not feel good. You can see it, Murray can see it.

Djokovic needs to change momentum. Four games in a row, and the crowd

believe, Murray believes. Dominating from the back of the

court. Not many volleys. If you are winning from the baseline in a

Djokovic encounter, you are in good shape.

I felt coming into the match Murray had to do something different, be

ultra-aggressive, keep the rally short, but he is playing Djokovic at

his own game and he is beating him. That is OK, it is 40-0. It is OK if

he wins the next point. When you're backhand is as good as

his, just hit a winner down the line.

A quick word of congratulations to John Peers and Henri Kontinen, who

won the doubles earlier. UMPIRE: Mr Djokovic has challenged

the call. Henri Kontinen from Finland who won the mixed doubles at

Wimbledon this year. The call is out. Djokovic has to turn this

around quickly, because he is on the way out here.

A good recovery from 0-15. After the French Open, I suppose when you

finally achieve everything that you set out to achieve, winning the

Davis Cup for his nation before, finished achieving the goals this

year by winning the French Open, it is a rare feat to hold four of the

grand slam titles and he did it simultaneously. It is like the

Apollo astronauts after walking on the moon, it is difficult to come

down again. That is Bastian Schweinsteiger and his wife. Quite

difficult for Djokovic to come down from the highs. I wonder where he is

now. Still brilliant. He is, and very much in this match but down one

set and a break, that last game was virtually a must win game. It is

almost, you reflect on the year, and it is inconceivable you can win two

Grand Slams and Masters Series 1000s and not finish is number one, but

that is what Murray is trying to do to Djokovic today. It has been a

great festival again at the O2. I just love this venue for this event.

get in the shot. Get out! -- Chris Kermode. There is big money in China

and the Middle East that will try to take this event away but as far as

the Time zones goes, I think it will be hard to move it from this time

zone, let alone the staging at the O2. Time will tell. Two more years

after this. For a player Djokovic's calibre at

this stage of the match, that is a poor miss. He needs to find a way to

get into one of Murray's service games. He cannot afford to miss

that. He has never lost a final, the ATP

World Tour Finals, he has won five of them. Subdued at the moment.

I don't believe it! He has knocked the stuffing out of Murray, he had

won the rally and on the 30th shot, he has an absolute nightmare. This

is worse than the overhead. I have no idea where his head is. It is a

big mess, the difference between 30-30 and 40-14.

There is one man who will not be complaining about that. Faultless

from Murray. Against possibly the best return in the history of the

game, he has only lost three points behind the first of serve.

I am not sure Djokovic fancies this. Definitely not right.

The let on the approach from Djokovic. But look at the smack on

this backhand. You are not going to get it passed me.

You see where Djokovic was covering, the crosscourt, that is where Murray

wants to hit the passing shot. They feel like match points.

Should not be fooled playing Djokovic, though.

Murray is closing in on another famous victory here.

An unbeaten run so far this year. 23 matches. Four straight tournaments

in a row. He's won more matches than anyone else. This year he's won 77.

Djokovic is second with 75. A vast amount of tennis for Andy

Murray. If that tells you he feels good about his body. Feels good

about his body and the confidence is there. But when you think, logically

about this match and what he's been through this week, for the last six

weeks, you just, for me, I felt, is this one step too far? For the way

he's come out, executed his game plan, hardly missed a ball against

one of the greats of the game. It sounds like the match is pretty much

done, but far from it against one of the great returners. Murray has to

keep this level of intensity. Hit his spots on his serve and force his

way to the finish line. Looking from Djokovic's end of the

court you think, well you've got to swing interest the hip and try and

hit some winners, but when you have made unforced errors, that means

you'll take more risks. I think first and foremost he will hope that

Murray's level drops. I remember when he would sit back

and soak up the pressure and try and counter it. Everyone would say,

you've got to take the ball on. Now look at him. The finished article.

That's an impeccable break point from Djokovic. Perfect length,

lovely direction, the backhand down-the-line. More like what we've

come to expect from this man, who was dominated this year in number

one position. Four of the last five years. Not

going down without a fight. CHEERING AND

APPLAUSE We sat there in 2013 watching Andy Murray doing what no

British player had done in 77 years and win Wimbledon. Do you remember

that final service game? 12 minutes or so of just amazing fight and

resilience from Novak Djokovic. When you think he looks like he's a

goner, he's got some momentum. There was always going to be a

reaction from Djokovic and I think Murray's match against Raonic last

night, when he served the match at 5-4 in the third. He served for the

match at 6-5. In the third he lost his serve. Similar scenario. Murray

needs to put the last couple of games behind him. No panic. Up a set

and a break and do a good job in his next service game.

I wonder if Milos Raonic is probably on an airport, I wonder if he may be

keeping an eye on the score of this one. Lots to look forward to next

year. He's certainly elevated the last year or so - the first Grand

Slam, final losing to Murray at Wimbledon, of course. He was in

tears at his press conference yesterday. He contemplated what he

described as his greatest ever match.

Only to lose it. He's a gent. With new tennis balls and a

resurgent Djokovic who has won the last two games in double quick time,

Murray, set at 4-3. Muscles screaming at you, but

maintaining technical control of the shot. A 33rd shot from Murray, just

dropping wide. Nine points in a row.

Murray obviously exhausted from a busy week. He's taking a fair amount

of time between points. Where's the consistency from the umpires.

Average is 30 seconds. They said it was supposed to be 25. Just an

observation. Like a dog with a bone. He just will

not let go. It is like one of those dogs that

you can swing around and they just cling on. The first rally of this,

well, he should have challenged. Should have challenged.

And he had one challenge left. Fine margins at big moments.

Concentration... If the opponent breaks a string

returning a serve when it is out, the server gets the first serve.

That is an extraordinary physical performance. Let alone the mentality

broken the 12 year stranglehold of the big three as they are known,

Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, Djokovic. Who had the preceding 12 years as

world number one. Amazing, Tim. It defies logic, it really does. Every

time there is a challenge put in front of this mad he finds a way to

get over it. Djokovic, one of the best players who has ever played

this game, in good form. At the end of such a long week, long year,

Murray found a way to get across the finishing line and all credit to

him. The world's number one. It is a ninth tournament victory this year,

including the Wimbledon title, which must be his highlight, of course. It

is the run at the end of the year that is phenomenal. He made a first

French Open final, another Australian Open final but this run

got him over the line to world number one. Nobody thought it

possible, did they? Shanghai, Vienna, Paris, defeating John Isner.

He had to match or better Novak Djokovic at this event to go year

end number one. The last person to achieve it outside the big three was

Andy Roddick in 2003. 2000 metres run by Andy Murray over an hour and

42 minutes after playing three hours and 40 against Milos Raonic and

saving a match point, yesterday. It is nice, he is going over to his

team to congratulate them and first, of course, his wife Kim. They have

been blessed with a baby daughter, Sophia this year. Great work from

Jamie Delgado who came in in March, April time and Ivan Lendl was

announced as part of the camp the day before Queen's Club. Amazing he

all England lawn tennis club. This year, Barclays has run a

champion. The winner has displayed passion and determination. Let's see

man by the name of Tom. How are you? I can tell you one thing about Tom,

he loves tennis. If he is not playing tennis, he is watching it,

and if he is not watching it, he is doing something behind-the-scenes

for the club. A young coach who lost his life in a crash. We wanted to

honour his memory. I started working nights so I could dedicate my days

fund-raising and take on the role of chairman. The dome is up and it is

fantastic. Just about to go on the court and presented. What an amazing

thing, can you believe it is happening? I cannot, I will be

trembling. It is absolutely amazing. Please welcome the Barclays Rewards

Very bad luck, I am sure you are bitterly disappointed, but you must

be proud of a great week and fantastic year. It has been a

history and it was an honour to be on the court and part of the big

occasion. Andy is definitely number one of the world, he is the best

like this. We have played Grand Slam finals, Olympics and matches like

this. It has been a tough rivalry and I have lost many of them and I

am happy to get the win today and finished the year number one is very

special, something I never expected. CHEERING. And you have words for

your team? Obviously, I could not do it without them, they have been a

huge help stop some of them have been around a long time. My family

have been there from the start and made a lot of sacrifices for me and

my tennis and so thank you very much to all of you. Special to be part of

an historical match, as well. Of course. There are a lot of great

champions of the past. Me and Novak are lucky to have to of them in our

SUE BARKER: What a site that is. Andy Murray with the trophy and

ending the world as world number one. Just when I thought I could not

admire him any more, even more respect today, Tim? Absolutely, an

incredible performance, when you reflect this week how much time he

has spent on court, how he has battled the whole year, amazing he

could find the one last push to play one of the greatest players of all

time and win the tournament and finish world number one. An

incredible achievement. I watched him dragging himself onto the

practice court today and looking tired, but he came out and went for

it. Great game plan. He double-faulted twice in the first

game and did not look to have the same colour in his face than we have

seen before but there is the man, he pushed on through, instead of

finding excuses he found a way to get the job done. It was lovely in

his speech he said he never expected this. That is part of his success,

he does not expect it, he continues working and allows the success to

come to him. He will have to build another house to put the trophies in

because he has won them all. What a gentleman, Djokovic, saying this is

your moment. He obviously had lovely words for Andy at the net. When you

look at this generation and bring in Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, they are

unbelievable ambassadors, for the sport, and they have huge respect

for each other. Djokovic has had plenty of these moments, but this is

Andy Murray's moment and he thoroughly deserves it. I have been

reading, and EZ everybody has asked in his run-up to the world number

one, you got there without beating Djokovic, so this will be special.

There will always be doubters and coming in here he had not beaten on

this great run of his anybody in the top ten and people saying he is not

good for it, that is that anybody who has played knows you can only

eat those in front of you. Andy beat him as well, Chris Kermode, who

brought the event here! He stages an amazing event. You can only beat who

is in front of you and Andy has beaten everybody. It is a remarkable

run and I am full of respect. I did not think it possible today. Like

Tim, I thought it was probably a match too far. After yesterday, only

24 hours to recover after a taxing match. It was tense at the end

because Djokovic raised his game like great champions do. There would

always be a reaction. The first five games important to establish

himself. When he got the opportunity he took it to get the break. That is

when people'sbelief in the stadium turned, that he could do this. Up a

double break in the second set and you know it will not be plain

sailing, there is no way Djokovic will go away without a fight.

Winning eight, nine points in a row, and you wondered if Murray would get

tight but he found a way. He has got a lot of points he can make up in

February because he took time off for the birth of his baby. He could

be world number one for sometime. That is right when you look at the

intricacies of the system. A person most closely challenging him in the

absence of Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, Wawrinka not as consistent,

is Novak Djokovic. Novak won Indian Wells and Miami and the Australian

Open, he won everything in the first half of next year. Andy as world

number one for quite some time. Wonderful to see him with the kids,

trying to get next to Andy to be in the photo. He inspires a generation?

It is imperative that the LTA and game in this country capitalise

because they have an unbelievable role model. He has overcome hurdles

and this has two inspired the next generation to play the game and

produce better players. A big cheer for Andy as he goes off the court

and a big cheer for Jamie Murray. What a year for the family. With his

partner Bruno Soares yesterday, the top ranked team in the world.

Murrays one and one. It is a fabulous story, the world doubles

number one, Nicolas Mahut, a Frenchman, to top the doubles, but

they are the top team. With a bit of luck, people will pick up a racket

and find a court. Their story is inspiring admission tell it time and

again without embarrassment. We can relive the match point again. The

cheering was so loud. Relief for Murray. It is almost as if he cannot

believe it. He had a couple of match points prior to that and on second

serve Djokovic stepped in on those points and Murray would have been

grateful to receive one last unforced error. We are blessed with

this generation. The stranglehold at the top of the game has been broken.

This achievement is different from winning Grand Slams regular

tournaments, it takes a team effort. He deserves a couple of weeks down

before training starts again. Great to see Ivan Lendl looking so

excited. He sort of smiled, I think you did, anyway. Great pictures and
