2017 has been a remarkable year of

tennis. Two legends once again rose

0:00:180:00:23

to the top of the men's game.

What a

champion here at Wimbledon. Nadal is

0:00:230:00:28

the top man. ... Now, in the final

event of the season, four men have

0:00:280:00:36

the final trophy in their sights.

Can Roger Federer end an exceptional

0:00:360:00:40

year with his seventh ATP Finals

trophy? In his way, David Goffin,

0:00:400:00:46

who has had the season of his life.

Can Grigor Dimitrov overcome the

0:00:460:00:54

American Jack Sock? Is the battle

for tournament glory, the last

0:00:540:00:59

chance to write a winning chapter.

Good afternoon. Semifinals day here

0:00:590:01:08

at the Nitto ATP Finals, but it's

another player, Andy Murray, who has

0:01:080:01:13

been making headlines, and we'll

talk more about that in a moment.

0:01:130:01:17

First, back to today, the final

four, familiar face, Roger Federer,

0:01:170:01:22

but three first timers, and a chance

to make a breakthrough.

Arguably the

0:01:220:01:26

best tennis this week has been

plagued by Dimitrov, who was

0:01:260:01:30

sensational last night. It's a match

which isn't supposed to mean

0:01:300:01:34

anything, and it produced great

entertainment. He has been playing

0:01:340:01:39

great, Jack Sock can't lose it when

he tries, Goffin was brilliant

0:01:390:01:44

against Thiem, and Federer is the

favourite. You've got to think that

0:01:440:01:48

Roger will have too much. Probably a

Federer, Dimitrov final, but Will

0:01:480:01:55

Stevens.

Goffin was saying he's got

to try and find the key to beat

0:01:550:01:58

Roger. -- but we'll see the

you

don't find that speed off forehand

0:01:580:02:06

lying around too often, but I think

it will be difficult for Goffin. He

0:02:060:02:10

will be thrilled to be through to

the semifinals of this event for the

0:02:100:02:14

first time, and he's got to have an

attitude of nothing to lose, to go

0:02:140:02:18

out and go for everything. He's not

going to just keep the ball in play

0:02:180:02:22

and expect Federer to miss. He's got

to make things happen. As much as we

0:02:220:02:26

try and put a game plan forward for

Goffin, I can only see one winner.

0:02:260:02:32

Federer's Serb, it may not be the

fastest, but the placement, he will

0:02:320:02:37

not get the chance to be aggressive

and -- Federer's serve.

He beat

0:02:370:02:43

David Goffin a couple of weeks ago

in but Goffin, with the Davis Cup

0:02:430:02:49

coming up, hats off to him. He could

have come here and said, I want to

0:02:490:02:52

hold back my energy. He hasn't. He

is so talented. It will be

0:02:520:02:57

fascinating to see what he does

today.

0:02:570:03:01

Ladies and gentlemen, making a

record 15th appearance, the six time

0:03:360:03:44

champion, with 95 titles, including

a record 19 Grand Slam trophies and

0:03:440:03:48

27 ATP Masters 1000s, the 2017

Australian Open and Wimbledon

0:03:480:03:56

champion, from Switzerland, Roger

Federer!

0:03:560:03:57

CHEERING

0:03:570:04:03

Ladies and gentlemen, please give a

big thank you...

That was a noise

0:04:310:04:34

and a half for Roger Federer! For

Goffin, when you got that head-on,

0:04:340:04:43

what do you tell yourself to try and

turn it around?

It's not easy. We

0:04:430:04:48

talk about the psychology of tennis

and sport, and it's about staying in

0:04:480:04:52

the present. He can't dwell on past

matches, if there's anything he can

0:04:520:04:56

take away from that, it is purely

the experience. He knows the

0:04:560:05:02

strengths of Federer's game. He has

to try and concentrate on his own

0:05:020:05:06

game, and I always think the start

is vital. Federer is such a good

0:05:060:05:10

front runner, you don't want to give

him an early break. It's important

0:05:100:05:15

that Goffin tries to get his spots

on his serve to try and keep that

0:05:150:05:20

first serve percentage guy and, when

he gets an opportunity for rallies,

0:05:200:05:24

he's got over it, flatten out his

ball and trying to be aggressive. --

0:05:240:05:29

he's got to go for it. Without any

weapons, Federer will wait to

0:05:290:05:33

dictate with his forehand.

We are

just waiting for Roger to come to

0:05:330:05:38

the site. You know, he is just, he

loves this arena, this occasion, and

0:05:380:05:45

he reacts to it so well.

He is

taking his time, like his rival,

0:05:450:05:49

Rafa. That is interesting.

Welcome

to the finals. After the coin toss,

0:05:490:05:58

we will do a quick photo. We have

the FedEx site and the ATP site,

0:05:580:06:05

which would you like? ATP site is

the call. It is FedEx. Roger.

0:06:050:06:12

Received.

Good match.

0:06:120:06:15

In keeping with tradition, Roger

wins the toss and he elected to

0:06:190:06:22

receive. Let's get back to the story

last night involving Andy Murray and

0:06:220:06:27

his split from Ivan Lendl. This is

what Murray had to say. I'm thankful

0:06:270:06:32

to Ivan for all of his help and

guidance. We have had great success

0:06:320:06:36

and learned a lot. My focus now is

on getting ready for Australia with

0:06:360:06:41

the team I have in place and getting

back to completing. Is this a

0:06:410:06:45

surprise? Not for me. As Andy

alluded to, they had a massive

0:06:450:06:52

amount of success.

I'm sure that

Andy and the team have learned a lot

0:06:520:06:55

from Ivan. They never actually saw a

great deal of each other but, right

0:06:550:07:01

now, the focus is on Andy's it and

getting healthy. I think he's got a

0:07:010:07:07

great team. Jamie Delgado, who

spends every day of the tennis

0:07:070:07:12

calendar with Andy on court, I think

he's done a great job. He

0:07:120:07:14

understands Andy's game and, as a

person, he gets on well with the

0:07:140:07:20

team.

People want to bring in super

coaches, and that is what Ivan was.

0:07:200:07:26

When he's fit with Amelie Mauresmo,

Ivan came on at Queen's at the

0:07:260:07:32

beginning of 2016. -- when he split

foot and then he won 52 matches out

0:07:320:07:36

of 55 for the remains of the year.

And he was world number one. You can

0:07:360:07:43

put out a statement like that, and

you can always get back together

0:07:430:07:48

again in a few months if it's not

working out. It's kind of a shame.

0:07:480:07:52

Ivan Lendl was somebody that will

always be on the end of a phone. If

0:07:520:07:56

Andy wanted to call on him in the

future, he can. I agree with Tim.

0:07:560:08:00

The main thing for Andy is to keep

the rest of the team employed by

0:08:000:08:05

being a tennis player himself, and I

remain extremely worried about his

0:08:050:08:09

hip and his future prospects. I'm

keeping my fingers crossed.

A

0:08:090:08:13

horrible year for him. He had

shingles and other illnesses,

0:08:130:08:17

injuries, and then the injury to his

hip. He's never been fit for a full

0:08:170:08:22

month.

It's been very difficult. I

think his performance at the end of

0:08:220:08:27

last year probably played a part. He

was exhausted and, in hindsight,

0:08:270:08:32

could probably have done with a bit

of time off at the end of 2016 to

0:08:320:08:36

give himself a chance for 2017. As

Andrew said, Andy has had the

0:08:360:08:43

problem with his hip. If anybody is

going to overcome it, it is handy,

0:08:430:08:47

because he is so meticulous and

motivated, and he likes

0:08:470:08:52

confrontation. He normally has

confrontation with an opponent but

0:08:520:08:54

now he has it with his hip, and he

is going to prove his hip wrong and

0:08:540:09:00

get back to full fitness. We will

all be keeping our fingers crossed.

0:09:000:09:05

At the press conference, Grigor

Dimitrov was asked about the

0:09:050:09:07

situation with Andy Murray and he

said, I'm not worried for them if

0:09:070:09:11

you me, is he going to take Danny,

no, it isn't going to take him back.

0:09:110:09:17

You mentioned it was a tough year

and they have just had their second

0:09:170:09:23

baby, so I guess it isn't all bad.

But Andy wants to be a part of this,

0:09:230:09:26

which is why he was here this week

practising. If his career is over

0:09:260:09:31

because of this, that would be sad,

but I tell you what, what a career!

0:09:310:09:36

I'm not trying to write the guy off.

We hope he is coming back. But hips

0:09:360:09:43

are notoriously difficult.

If

anybody can do it, it will be Andy.

0:09:430:09:47

Back to today, and Roger Federer,

how well has he played this week?

0:09:470:09:52

He's played OK. He has won three

matches in his group, but his first

0:09:520:09:57

serve percentage has been average,

back of the court, a lot more

0:09:570:10:00

unforced errors and we are used to

see from him. Again, he is good at

0:10:000:10:06

not panicking. I don't think he has

to play his best tennis to win

0:10:060:10:13

today, but if he were to go through

to the final, he'd be looking to up

0:10:130:10:17

his level at all times.

Goffin has

to do something different, so what

0:10:170:10:23

is that? Doing more to Roger's

background rather than the forehand?

0:10:230:10:28

I have no idea. I love the way

Goffin plays, but Federer as so many

0:10:280:10:35

tools and wasted that an opponent

that you have to see him as the

0:10:350:10:41

potential winner. Goffin, the mascot

was almost as big as he was when he

0:10:410:10:44

came out! It's so nice to watch him

play.

In his group match, Goffin

0:10:440:10:50

struggled against Dimitrov, because

Dimitrov was patient, he stayed in

0:10:500:10:53

the rally, he didn't make unforced

errors but, when he got the

0:10:530:10:58

opportunity to unload, he had the

firepower to hit through Goffin.

0:10:580:11:02

Let's be honest, Federer is a better

version of Dimitrov. That is where

0:11:020:11:06

it is difficult to come up with some

sort of game plan with the weapons

0:11:060:11:11

that Goffin has, to see how we can

but Federer, but he's got to give it

0:11:110:11:15

his best shot and he has nothing to

lose. He's had a great year and,

0:11:150:11:19

irrespective of what happens in this

match, 20 of stuff to follow. His

0:11:190:11:25

season is by no means over. --

plenty of stuff.

Last season, Roger

0:11:250:11:30

Federer was different, he was being

aggressive. It has worked for him.

0:11:300:11:37

He has talked about his racket with

a large ahead, a bigger sweet spot,

0:11:370:11:41

and he has certainly got the

confidence on his backhand to be

0:11:410:11:44

aggressive. If he is being

aggressive on both wings, it is a

0:11:440:11:48

bonus. Not too many areas to attack.

The one area you want to come in is

0:11:480:11:53

with a big serve to try and really

set up the opportunities for you to

0:11:530:11:59

dictate the points. Once Federer

starts being offensive, it is

0:11:590:12:02

difficult to defend against him on

any surface, let alone a fast indoor

0:12:020:12:07

court.

Can't wait to hear what you

are going to do for your cup of tea

0:12:070:12:11

today. No doubt that will be

unfurled in a moment. But sit back

0:12:110:12:15

and enjoy this semifinal.

A great reception for both players,

0:12:150:12:21

the first of two semifinals today.

This evening, Dimitrov against Sock,

0:12:210:12:26

the debutant, the first time for one

qualifier. David Goffin, serving to

0:12:260:12:30

the six time champion.

0:12:300:12:33

Worth remembering that he got off to

a poor start against Dominic Thiem.

0:12:460:12:51

He was getting hammered by Grigor

Dimitrov, where he got just two

0:12:510:12:56

games, and was 3-0 down against

Thiem.

0:12:560:13:00

It's early days but I think, when

you got a rallying shot and a

0:13:230:13:28

choice, from Goffin's point of view,

going to Federer's forehand, knowing

0:13:280:13:32

that it's a risk...

0:13:320:13:36

With respect to Federer, come on,

David! Keep it close.

0:14:370:14:42

He is unlikely to serve much better

than that -- much quicker than that,

0:15:230:15:28

125. This would be a tremendous

start for the Belgian.

0:15:280:15:35

6-1, 6-2 in Basel recently, Roger

Federer going ahead and winning his

0:15:540:15:59

home tournament for the eighth time.

0:15:590:16:02

Thierry Van Cleemput, who is working

with David Goffin. Eight straight

0:16:230:16:28

sets for Federer against this man.

0:16:280:16:33

Federer did the hard work and really

worked himself into the point. He

0:17:090:17:13

got forward and anywhere in that

service box would have been a

0:17:130:17:15

winner.

0:17:150:17:17

Fourth break point this opening

service game.

0:17:390:17:44

Tremendous work from Goffin.

Actually, from both players. Goffin

0:18:280:18:35

going into the forehand lot in this

match where there is a choice.

It's

0:18:350:18:41

a risk. You've got to go there with

strength, but the advantage of going

0:18:410:18:46

into the four and is it opens up the

backhand. If you keep playing to the

0:18:460:18:51

backhand side, Federer will edge

over there and your gets smaller and

0:18:510:18:54

smaller. -- your target gets smaller

and smaller.

0:18:540:19:02

I think they are bluffing. I think

it is in somebody's and back. --

0:19:260:19:33

somebody's handbag.

0:19:330:19:36

Oh, it's a way. What a contest in

the opening game. On his fifth break

0:20:150:20:26

point opportunity, Federer

breakthrough. -- breaks through.

0:20:260:20:32

Boy, that was a decent game.

It's

been a story of this event, how well

0:20:320:20:37

the players have come out and struck

the ball from the first point.

You

0:20:370:20:42

were directing our attention to this

earlier in the week. Federer's first

0:20:420:20:46

serve and second serve placement.

He

can hit all six areas of the court,

0:20:460:20:53

so you can't tell where he is going

to do it. Serving few into the body.

0:20:530:20:57

But not one of the fastest servers

in the game, but certainly one of

0:20:570:21:02

the most accurate.

Starting to go

out wide with this slice serve. He's

0:21:020:21:11

got the break.

0:21:110:21:12

Former world number three, Ivan

Ljubicic. Coaches Federer with

0:23:590:24:06

Severin Luthi. He's been with Roger

Federer years, both the Swiss Davis

0:24:060:24:11

Cup captain and his coach. But

mainly friend and part of the team.

0:24:110:24:17

It's not all about the tennis.

Mirka. I am sure the four children

0:24:170:24:28

are here somewhere. I haven't seen

them in the stadium.

0:24:280:24:32

Speaking of children and families,

got some good pictures to show you

0:24:370:24:42

in a minute. Serena Williams getting

married a couple of days ago. Did

0:24:420:24:49

you see the wedding gown?

No, but

looking forward to seeing it.

$2.6

0:24:490:24:57

million, apparently, the wedding

dress.

0:24:570:25:01

Expensive dress, if you only wear it

once.

I was going to say, folds that

0:25:070:25:13

one up and take care Robic! -- take

care of it.

0:25:130:25:19

So, who pays for that? Is it the

father of the bride?

Yeah. I bet he

0:25:390:25:49

got two.

0:25:490:25:51

First challenge from Roger Federer.

0:25:570:26:00

Need to start building up a fund now

to save up for your daughter's

0:26:060:26:09

wedding.

I'm going to buy them and

expensive dress.

0:26:090:26:16

Listen, you are hardly going to be

consulted! Just back off.

0:26:250:26:30

No, and Goffin is off the mark with

that forehand error from Federer.

0:26:540:26:58

Well done to him. 1-2 and a break

down. Federer is only dropped serve

0:26:580:27:07

twice so far in three previous

matches. OK, it was Disney, beauty

0:27:070:27:11

and the beast themed wedding. A lot

of wonderful music, and Serena

0:27:110:27:15

Williams posted this beautiful

picture. Congratulations to her. And

0:27:150:27:21

Alexander McQueen dress. I've given

you the price already, but that's

0:27:210:27:23

not the point. It's just wonderful.

She has taken time off, the

0:27:230:27:28

Wimbledon champion. The bridegroom,

Alexis O'Hanion, of Ukrainian

0:27:280:27:43

descent, has posted that. Their

two-month-old child has -- their

0:27:430:27:49

two-month-old child was at the

ceremony, and it's going to appear

0:27:490:27:52

in Vogue magazine, by all accounts.

As for you, who is paying? You are,

0:27:520:27:58

productively. If I have a son who

was marrying one of your daughters,

0:27:580:28:03

I think that would be the case. I

think it should be more 50-50, don't

0:28:030:28:07

you? He isn't short of a bob or two,

Alexis O'Hanion. 150 people there.

0:28:070:28:15

Some great pictures appearing. I

hope she comes back and has the

0:28:150:28:20

appetite to play. Simona Halep, the

world number one, and Caroline

0:28:200:28:31

Wozniacki winning the season-ending

championships, the WTA Tour, and she

0:28:310:28:37

was at the wedding, too. Great

friends with Serena.

0:28:370:28:42

This would leave just one challenge

remaining, if he gets this wrong...

0:29:390:29:43

Just one more challenge remaining,

the fourth game.

0:29:430:29:47

That is a shot he said he has

struggled with this week, going down

0:30:150:30:20

the line, the higher part of the

net, it does look like the ball is

0:30:200:30:24

flying a little bit on him.

0:30:240:30:26

That is accuracy for you.

0:30:340:30:45

Three net cords in a row?

Lot of the

mistakes from Federer on the

0:30:450:30:50

backhand have been on the net but if

he feels the ball flying... He is

0:30:500:30:56

trying to keep the ball a bit lower.

0:30:560:30:59

Each round robin when was worth 200

computer points, a semifinal is

0:31:200:31:29

worth 402 win this entire thing,

1500 points. The Grand Slam is 2000

0:31:290:31:37

and the Masters 1000 series is

obviously 1000. The clue is in the

0:31:370:31:42

name.

0:31:420:31:51

We have seen Federer attacking the

second serve more from the Goffin

0:32:010:32:05

box but from the deuce box... Inside

the baseline...

0:32:050:32:12

If Federer was to go ahead and pick

up some good computer points this

0:32:150:32:22

weekend, that would put him into a

position just tucked in behind Rafa

0:32:220:32:25

Nadal.

0:32:250:32:28

At times you don't know what to say

about Federer's tennis.

That is

0:33:090:33:15

where you'd take your hat, Goffin

has played some good tennis but

0:33:150:33:20

Federer is in a different league.

0:33:200:33:23

The Davis cup champion for Croatia,

they went undefeated in that year.

0:34:120:34:23

Winning all 11 matches they played.

And has beaten Roger Federer.

0:34:230:34:32

There is that right knowledge and

acceptance from Goffin, pulled out

0:34:490:34:54

wide from the back spin and that

piercing drive down the line from

0:34:540:34:59

Federer and this set is in the hands

of Federer after 22 minutes. After

0:34:590:35:05

taking six months off after the 2016

semifinal loss to Milos Raonic, he

0:35:050:35:11

won the Australian Open. Ridiculous,

really. And the final against Nadal,

0:35:110:35:17

after being down in the fifth, was

superb. He will have to defend that

0:35:170:35:21

Down Under in January.

He has won

some big titles. Four of those

0:35:210:35:31

defeats, two of the matches had

match point against Tommy Haas

0:35:310:35:36

earlier on in the year.

Indeed. Just

those four losses and to begin next

0:35:360:35:45

year, the Australian Open, Indian

Wells and Miami, straight out of the

0:35:450:35:50

blocks! Unbelievable but it was

those six months off and then

0:35:500:35:54

winning Australia that really

shocked the world of tennis.

Plenty

0:35:540:35:58

of players have had a long injury

lay-off but this was very

0:35:580:36:02

calculated. There is no one who has

returned to the sport and been so

0:36:020:36:07

successful, so quickly.

After a year

like that, he ends up that number

0:36:070:36:14

two, that shows you how good a year

Rafa Nadal had at the age of 31. The

0:36:140:36:20

oldest year end number one, Roger

Federer the oldest year end number

0:36:200:36:25

two. More and more records for these

great players.

0:36:250:36:32

Exhibition stuff in what happens to

be the semifinals of the World Tour

0:37:580:38:03

Finals.

This is the stage for Roger

Federer to exhibit all of his

0:38:030:38:11

talent.

0:38:110:38:12

A 14th semifinal in 15 appearances

for Federer. Serve Ian McKellen.

0:38:270:38:34

-- serve Ian McKellan.

0:38:530:38:54

Oh! What is going on? That is just

not a! -- naughty. That is a

0:39:090:39:29

full-blooded swing. He may not have

been happy with a couple of his

0:39:290:39:32

performances in the group stages,

notably against Zverev, but he is

0:39:320:39:38

totally in control with this.

0:39:380:39:41

The Davis Cup final begins next

Friday. France against Belgium. That

0:41:550:42:08

isn't Lille, with Goffin leading the

Belgian team. -- that is in.

0:42:080:42:16

He started this week by defeating

the world number one, Rafa Nadal.

0:42:330:42:38

Excellent match in three sets, Nadal

was not right and retired at the end

0:42:380:42:43

of that and went home, he had knee

problems.

0:42:430:42:51

That is good for a couple of

reasons. He does not allow Federer

0:43:080:43:13

to start the second set serving.

Some small comfort for him. And you

0:43:130:43:20

look at the way that Goffin has

played, hitting the ball well, he

0:43:200:43:25

has tried to be as offensive as

possible and anything that drops in

0:43:250:43:29

the middle of the court, Federer is

able to dictate with both backhand

0:43:290:43:33

and forehand.

Unusual for a player

to only be five foot 11, these days

0:43:330:43:42

we expect them to be six foot three

and above and everybody says you

0:43:420:43:46

must be enormous and physical, you

can be physical at his height. He is

0:43:460:43:51

quick and he has good hands.

Certainly does, you always tried to

0:43:510:43:58

control the controllable is and you

cannot do much about your height but

0:43:580:44:02

with his physique, he is very fleet

of foot and strong on both wings but

0:44:020:44:07

you'd just want some of that big

weapon, the big first serve or

0:44:070:44:13

devastating ground stroke. He has a

lot of good things but not just one

0:44:130:44:18

weapon that can really hurt Federer.

That victory over Nadal was Goffin's

0:44:180:44:25

fifth top ten win this year, it was

taken to three sets and he stay

0:44:250:44:33

determined and got through that and

then was hammered by Grigor Dimitrov

0:44:330:44:38

with the loss of two games, one of

the performances of the year from

0:44:380:44:42

Dimitrov. He recovered to beat

Dominic Thiem from three love line.

0:44:420:44:48

To get to this semifinal. -- three

love down.

0:44:480:44:56

Well, the first game is so

important, Goffin tried to hang on

0:45:580:46:02

but on his fifth break point Federer

got through and it was one-way

0:46:020:46:06

traffic. A wonderful performance

from him as he takes out a nice, new

0:46:060:46:14

racquet. To return these relatively

new balls. The stage is yours, Tim

0:46:140:46:19

Henman?

13 - three, that is one

reflection of how much Federer is

0:46:190:46:27

dominating from the back of the

court, there are too many unforced

0:46:270:46:31

errors from both of them. Federer

has obviously got the winners to

0:46:310:46:37

counterbalance those unforced

errors. The area of the game that

0:46:370:46:41

Federer has not done so well in this

week... The fastest serve from

0:46:410:46:47

Goffin, four miles per hour faster

than Federer.

Perhaps a little

0:46:470:46:53

surprising. Federer has raised his

ground stroke speed, that is a

0:46:530:47:01

reflection of what is coming at you.

Hitting more forehands here.

And the

0:47:010:47:06

percentages on serve. That is a good

number Federer. Lowell on the first

0:47:060:47:12

serve points that he has one.

That

little graph at the bottom... Five

0:47:120:47:23

break points in the first game and

there is three for the second break.

0:47:230:47:31

And the break point that he was

unable to convert... At the moment,

0:47:310:47:38

it is one-way.

One-way traffic and

the question is, what can Goffin do

0:47:380:47:44

differently? I struggle to think of

anything. He cannot really serve and

0:47:440:47:52

volley, can he be more aggressive

from the baseline? He will then make

0:47:520:47:56

more unforced errors. He has to hope

that his level goes up a little bit

0:47:560:48:02

and that Federer drops off.

This is

a restart for Goffin after 35

0:48:020:48:08

minutes of this first semifinal at

the O2 Arena. This is the end from

0:48:080:48:18

which he lost the opening service

game. That cannot happen again. He

0:48:180:48:22

has lost nine straight sets to

Federer.

0:48:220:48:26

The 14th semifinal on these World

Tour Championship 's. Ten and three,

0:49:030:49:13

losing to three players.

0:49:130:49:23

I cannot believe we have been here

in London since 2009.

0:49:260:49:31

A great backhand by Federer but

after the first serve, Goffin got

0:49:390:49:45

the reply he wants, he has to do

more with this shot. Rolling it into

0:49:450:49:51

the corner, he has to go for it and

if he misses that, big deal, he is

0:49:510:49:55

going to miss the point anyway.

0:49:550:49:57

Getting the job done for Goffin.

That is a better start to this set.

0:50:350:50:44

A couple of tournament victories for

him towards the end of the year,

0:50:440:50:49

China, 250. And the Japan open in

Tokyo, where he defeated an arena.

0:50:490:50:58

The finals in Sofia and Rotterdam.

Endorse. Consistent, 56 match

0:50:580:51:05

victories this year for Goffin.

0:51:050:51:11

A couple of good returns. Goffin is

hoping for a missed first serve and

0:52:550:53:02

then volleyed to go after the

second. He took a big risk.

0:53:020:53:08

He had his chances. The forehand

passes, could have gone down the

0:53:220:53:32

line. Federer was there to pick off

that forehand volley. This one

0:53:320:53:37

coming up...

0:53:370:53:39

Goffin continuing to go into

Federer's forehand but really

0:54:070:54:12

hitting those shots with some

firepower.

0:54:120:54:16

Goffin was talking about how he was

not sure what he was going to change

0:55:090:55:13

but it appears the difference

between this match and basil daisy

0:55:130:55:15

is getting that forehand

consistently, he is having some

0:55:150:55:20

mistakes...

0:55:200:55:27

-- Basel is that he is.

0:55:360:55:41

Federer winning all the points on

the deuce court and Goffin on the ad

0:56:240:56:32

court.

0:56:320:56:34

The longest game on Federer's serve

is turning into one of the most

0:56:440:56:49

demanding to break any point. The

first for Goffin.

0:56:490:56:55

And he has got the break! Only the

third time Federer has been broken

0:57:140:57:23

this week and after the first set,

this is an excellent response.

It is

0:57:230:57:30

great hitting from Goffin, he was

forcing the errors out of Federer

0:57:300:57:35

and then a great second serve return

at deuce and a strong point finish

0:57:350:57:41

with the great passing shot.

Absolutely deserves a break of

0:57:410:57:44

serve. He really has to knuckle down

on his own serve.

0:57:440:57:47

Fantastic.

0:58:000:58:03

What a turnaround! Excellent work.

26-year-old from Rocourt in Belgium.

0:59:541:00:03

At a career-high after rate

tremendous year. At a tournament

1:00:031:00:07

last year, he took place of Gael

Monfils, but this year he returns

1:00:071:00:14

having made it through to the

semifinal and making a pretty good

1:00:141:00:17

fist of this. Kind of a free game

next. No time to take your foot off

1:00:171:00:22

the gas, and you certainly want to

go for it straightaway. But Federer,

1:00:221:00:28

no sign of panic, I'm sure. He isn't

really want to panic on court.

1:00:281:00:32

Definitely not. He will appreciate

that Goffin has played some great

1:00:321:00:37

tennis and he'll go back to the

basics of hitting the spots on is

1:00:371:00:42

serve, try and hold the next game

and have another crack at Goffin's

1:00:421:00:48

serve.

They are playing a Stevie

Wonder track in here, and everybody

1:00:481:00:51

is trying to get involved.

1:00:511:00:57

Want to swap, Mirka? You know,

somewhere in here, there could be

1:01:031:01:10

some little Henmans. No, I don't

think she is going -- Sir Ian is

1:01:101:01:16

going to stand up and start twerking

or anything, but you never know.

My

1:01:161:01:22

family are dotted around here

somewhere.

Denis Shapovalov,

1:01:221:01:26

Newcomer of the year. We will be

speaking to him a bit later. There

1:01:261:01:32

will be an encore ceremony to

celebrate that award after Roger

1:01:321:01:37

Federer or David Goffin comes

through this. After that match, we

1:01:371:01:42

will be hearing from this wonderful

left-handed player, this newcomer.

1:01:421:01:47

You know, I suspect Denis Shapovalov

would be as nervous about making his

1:02:231:02:30

speech as he was about playing any

matches this year. 18 years old,

1:02:301:02:36

fourth round, last 16 at the US

Open, he beat MBE. Tremendous year,

1:02:361:02:48

from 250 to 51 in the world. -- he

beat Nadal.

1:02:481:02:54

68 seconds worth of service game

from Federer.

1:02:581:03:05

There they all are.

A good serve and

volley, but I don't think Goffin

1:03:331:03:45

really got the volley. I think he

nudged back and tailgated. Beat me

1:03:451:03:49

with your backhand.

1:03:491:03:53

Certainly not coming now for

Federer. He had 0-15 in this game

1:05:161:05:24

and a clenched fist after that

forehand pass. Since then, Goffin,

1:05:241:05:27

another steady response.

1:05:271:05:31

Well, Goffin looking over at his

coach about that challenge. Clean

1:06:311:06:39

strike. It's the footwork that makes

such a big difference, Federer just

1:06:391:06:43

tucked that out and round. One of

the fastest racket heads you'll ever

1:06:431:06:50

see, almost 4000 rpm on the

resulting top-spin.

1:06:501:06:55

Smart serving. 107 mph, but

well-placed, keeping Federer

1:07:031:07:12

off-balance. Not easy.

At 40-15,

when you get your game point

1:07:121:07:19

opportunities, it is so important to

close them out.

1:07:191:07:26

Well, I'm glad we are seeing a match

because, after the first set of just

1:07:391:07:44

over half an hour, you thought

Federer could run through this,

1:07:441:07:49

bearing in mind that Dimitrov had

beaten Goffin earlier this week with

1:07:491:07:51

the loss of just two games. But

hasn't he done well?

Really well. He

1:07:511:07:59

has upped his first serve percentage

and is winning 82% when the first

1:07:591:08:04

serve finds its mark. Only three

unforced errors in the set. Big

1:08:041:08:07

difference to the first, where he

made 13 unforced errors in eight

1:08:071:08:14

games.

He has settled in, and this

is the first of two semifinals. Just

1:08:141:08:19

eight men in this event, split into

two groups of four, so we are

1:08:191:08:24

looking at the whim of one group,

Federer, against the runner-up of

1:08:241:08:28

the other, Goffin, and later on

Dimitrov, won his group, against the

1:08:281:08:34

run up against Federer, Jack Sock.

Three debutantes and a six time

1:08:341:08:39

champion in these cemeteries Daly

semis. -- in these semis. That is

1:08:391:08:48

where they are! We found them.

I

recognise two of those. No, I

1:08:481:08:56

recognise more than that.

Do they

play tennis?

A little bit. They play

1:08:561:09:03

a bit at school.

Is that because

their dad was too lazy to teach

1:09:031:09:06

them?

Perhaps. Wrong surname to play

tennis in this country.

1:09:061:09:15

I wonder if Myla Rose and Charlene

Riva, Federer pass daughters, can

1:09:501:09:59

play tennis, or Leo and Lenny. Tough

old surname as well! Are you any

1:09:591:10:08

good?

Who coaches you? My dad.

1:10:081:10:15

The funny thing is, they probably

wouldn't listen.

1:10:241:10:30

I think he actually does take the

kids to tennis lessons.

That would

1:10:421:10:47

be a pressurised situation for a

coach.

1:10:471:10:51

Great return.

1:10:581:11:00

A few more errors coming from

Federer pass racket, but Goffin

1:12:241:12:28

doing a good job in the early parts

of his service games getting his

1:12:281:12:31

nose in front.

1:12:311:12:34

Couldn't quite get his feet up to

the ball.

1:13:271:13:31

Just guided the ball on that

forehand side. Just pushed it a

1:13:451:13:48

little bit. If it was missed, it's

going to be a break point. It is

1:13:481:13:54

wide.

1:13:541:13:55

Reaching for the ball.

1:14:131:14:16

We've said several times this week,

Federer, that he's struggled at

1:14:251:14:28

times to control the ball on his

forehand on a big point.

1:14:281:14:33

Surprisingly this.

1:14:331:14:37

David Goffin just continues to

impress. At 0-30 in that game, and

1:15:101:15:17

then break point down, but just so

resilient, isn't he? Keeps on

1:15:171:15:26

bouncing back for more, enjoying

this match now, and he is right

1:15:261:15:29

involved in it. After the first set,

didn't necessarily expect that to

1:15:291:15:34

happen. Reminder that it is Dimitrov

against Sock, the second semifinal,

1:15:341:15:39

later. Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo

are in the finals, they beat Ryan

1:15:391:15:45

Harrison and Michael Venus. It will

be Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares

1:15:451:15:52

against Henri Kontinen and John

Peers, who have won all four finals

1:15:521:15:55

they've been in this year and are

defending ATP final champions. A lot

1:15:551:15:59

to look forward to on the doubles

court as well. BBC sport website for

1:15:591:16:03

that, and you can hear it on BBC

five live sports extra. Tomorrow at

1:16:031:16:10

6pm on BBC Two, the final, Goffin

against Sock.

It's looking that way

1:16:101:16:19

now, isn't it!

It would be unusual.

People expecting Federer against

1:16:191:16:25

Dimitrov.

Is easy to take Federer

winning for granted, but it's been

1:16:251:16:31

impressive away that Goffin

responded. He didn't get frustrated

1:16:311:16:34

at the end of the first set, he

stuck to his guns and played a great

1:16:341:16:39

game to break the Federer serve and,

at worst now, he's going to have an

1:16:391:16:43

opportunity to for this second set.

-- to serve for this second set.

1:16:431:16:51

So, Goffin trying to do what he

hasn't done in two years and three

1:19:061:19:10

matches, to take a set from Federer.

He will go and changed his racket,

1:19:101:19:17

because he is about to receive. He

has 12 rackets, he travels with 12,

1:19:171:19:22

and he has all eight of them strong

for each match. -- re-strong. I

1:19:221:19:29

think he was saying that the

downstream is in gut, 27 kilos, 25

1:19:291:19:37

and a half cross strings. Lots of

tiny little alterations and he says

1:19:371:19:43

he can feel the difference.

1:19:431:19:47

A great start.

1:19:501:19:53

Such a hard thing to do, to dominate

Federer from the back of the court.

1:20:011:20:05

It is Goffin getting on the front

foot.

1:20:051:20:11

Doesn't serve many aces, but

certainly a good time for his

1:20:181:20:23

fourth.

1:20:231:20:25

Already, just scraps for Federer in

this game. Three straight points for

1:20:451:20:49

Goffin to make it 1-1.

1:20:491:20:55

And one is all that he needs. Good

work, David Goffin we are going into

1:20:581:21:04

a decider here in the semifinal of

the ATP Finals.

1:21:041:21:10

A couple of times this week, Federer

has looked a little bit crosspatch,

1:21:141:21:19

a bit frustrated with his

performance. He lost a set to Cilic

1:21:191:21:22

when it was a death match and he'd

already won the group. The match

1:21:221:21:26

against Alexander Zverev was a big

build-up. Some frustrations there.

1:21:261:21:30

It hasn't all been going his way. He

is going to have to fight once again

1:21:301:21:36

to make yet another final here in

London. What a difference between

1:21:361:21:44

the sets. Total points won, Goffin,

33 to 25. Coming into the net a fair

1:21:441:21:51

amount, Goffin. Timing is everything

for that. Tim.

Not a lot to look at

1:21:511:22:01

when you are talking about service

speed. None of these players,

1:22:011:22:06

neither of these players are going

to break records. But Goffin really

1:22:061:22:10

cut out the unforced errors and won

the important points. 63% of first

1:22:101:22:18

serves, winning 79% when that goes

in, and 64 on second serve. That is

1:22:181:22:24

good, because he isn't getting cheap

points with his second serve, so

1:22:241:22:29

those are baseline rallies, and he

has dominated.

And Federer ran

1:22:291:22:34

further in the second set and

Goffin, which suggests that Goffin

1:22:341:22:38

is controlling the centre of the

court better than he was in the

1:22:381:22:41

first set. So, the expectation would

be that Federer would pick up his

1:22:411:22:47

play, but nothing to be taken for

granted here. This great career that

1:22:471:22:52

we've celebrated so many times.

The

psychology is interesting because we

1:22:521:22:58

said Goffin came on the court with

nothing to lose. He played the

1:22:581:23:01

second set the right way, going for

his shots. When you win the second

1:23:011:23:06

set, suddenly it is a shoot out in

the third set and you have to

1:23:061:23:09

maintain that attitude. You can't

suddenly say, actually, I've got

1:23:091:23:13

something to lose. You've got to

keep going for your shots. That is

1:23:131:23:17

easier said than done.

1:23:171:23:20

We'll be celebrating at the end of

this match Denis Shapovalov, the

1:25:051:25:09

most improved award for him. For

Federer, the sportsmanship award,

1:25:091:25:20

named after Stefan Edberg. They come

back Player of the Year and the

1:25:201:25:25

fans' favourite. As you heard from

the welcome that he got.

1:25:251:25:30

One minute, Goffin is on the attack.

The next minute, it's Federer. Both

1:26:591:27:05

defending well, but Federer able to

use that forehand down the line to

1:27:051:27:09

set up the shortfall. Couldn't miss

that at this stage of the match. --

1:27:091:27:14

to set up a short ball.

1:27:141:27:18

Gutsy play from Goffin. He's

continued to go strong to Federer's

1:27:401:27:44

forehand.

1:27:441:27:47

That ball looked very long. Perhaps

I'm wrong. It didn't matter in the

1:28:011:28:07

end.

1:28:071:28:09

He's getting reeled in. This normal

tour of triumph that the Swiss fans

1:28:401:28:47

get used to seeing isn't happening

today. Going to have to grind this

1:28:471:28:51

one out.

1:28:511:28:53

Lots of mistakes. He looks flat.

Goffin, from 0-30, with a hold. A

1:29:021:29:14

bit early to celebrate, but holding

from 0-30 against Federer at the

1:29:141:29:19

start of the third set is a big

deal.

1:29:191:29:22

Five straight points. Goffin in the

lead.

1:29:341:29:43

It doesn't look like he really wants

to be at at the moment. -- to be out

1:30:041:30:12

there playing. More frustrated than

anything, by his opponent, who is

1:30:121:30:18

playing some exceptional tennis.

1:30:181:30:21

Brilliant backhand down the line.

Baseball was low, that sets up the

1:31:131:31:20

overhead. Two break points. -- this

ball was low. He really sense that

1:31:201:31:34

Federer is having to risk more and

more on second serve, especially

1:31:341:31:41

since Goffin is getting the upper

hand in these baseline exchanges.

1:31:411:31:45

He really is ahead. We have a

surprise in our hands. How about it?

1:31:531:32:06

At what stage does he release are

thinking about this? Probably never,

1:32:061:32:11

he is laid-back. He is bound to be a

bit nervous as he gets closer to the

1:32:111:32:16

winning line.

Nothing to lose at the

beginning, he wins the second set,

1:32:161:32:21

well... You have something to lose

now!

Lovely player. He won the

1:32:211:32:33

comeback Player of the Year in 2015.

He suffered injuries to his wrist

1:32:331:32:38

and could not play at all and then

during the summer of his comeback

1:32:381:32:44

year he won three straight

challenges in a row at a tour event

1:32:441:32:47

and he was well back. He has

suffered injury himself and

1:32:471:32:53

adversity and he has led his country

to a second Davis Cup final against

1:32:531:32:59

France next weekend. It would have

been easy for him to conserve some

1:32:591:33:02

energy and be satisfied with just

being here but not a bit of it.

They

1:33:021:33:08

are both such enormous events and

having qualified for this with a

1:33:081:33:12

fantastic season of tennis, he would

have been keen to give this his best

1:33:121:33:18

shot and take advantage and find

himself up by a break in the third

1:33:181:33:22

set... Against Roger Federer... That

is perhaps not what he was expecting

1:33:221:33:30

at the beginning of the week.

1:33:301:33:32

The shortest player here at five

foot 11. The lightest player at 68

1:33:371:33:42

kilos. He packs a punch. From the

back of the court today. He has the

1:33:421:33:51

break.

1:33:511:33:52

Oh!

1:34:081:34:10

Oh!

1:35:021:35:05

One of those shots were he was

probably anxious to see if he has

1:35:151:35:19

made it before he had hit it. It did

not need to be that good.

Still

1:35:191:35:27

trying to work out who the crowd

want.

1:35:271:35:30

That is miles out. Two forehands in

this game. One pushed clearly down

1:35:351:35:42

the line and the other thrashed over

the baseline. It is rare to see him

1:35:421:35:47

so anxious on that forehand side.

1:35:471:35:49

It had plenty of top-spin on it. Did

it dip? Absolutely not.

1:36:091:36:18

Again, it is a fine line, he has to

be aggressive for that big second

1:36:441:36:49

serve... Not the time to serve your

first double fault in the match.

1:36:491:36:57

This is not the time to serve a

second double fault in the match!

1:37:111:37:15

That was a tennis point!

1:37:351:37:39

Goffin is playing so well, lovely

adjustment with his footwork, the

1:38:181:38:24

return clipped the top of the net.

121 mph, the first serve, coming up

1:38:241:38:32

the right time.

1:38:321:38:34

Yes! You have to love the way this

guy plays.

1:38:471:38:54

Who do you think is going to win

from here? We're not doing a cup of

1:39:221:39:30

tea on this but right now, the way

they are playing, Goffin is the

1:39:301:39:35

favourite. Maybe only the slight

favourite but he is controlling the

1:39:351:39:42

play from the back of the court.

1:39:421:39:44

That is why the sport can be

difficult to predict, Goffin beat

1:40:261:40:30

Rafa Nadal in his first match, the

world number one. Then two games

1:40:301:40:36

against Dimitrov, solid match

against Dominic Thiem. Now, he is

1:40:361:40:50

eyeing up the finishing line against

Federer, a person he has never

1:40:501:40:53

beaten.

Quick game, nice. There was

something I meant to look at

1:40:531:41:07

earlier, the last time somebody beat

Nadal and Federer in the same

1:41:071:41:13

week... You can go through your

mental files, I know, but it is a

1:41:131:41:21

good question... I am sure somebody

out there will know this! It would

1:41:211:41:26

not be a bad week, to have to play

both in the same week along with

1:41:261:41:32

Dominic Thiem and Dimitrov and

Goffin is not finished yet. He will

1:41:321:41:36

have to keep on thinking and keep on

changing the spin and the pace, keep

1:41:361:41:42

believing in what has gotten to this

point, playing against a bloke he is

1:41:421:41:47

very happy to say was his hero

growing up.

He beat Nadal, Federer,

1:41:471:41:58

lose and still win the tournament!

There has been some great tennis

1:41:581:42:05

this week. People were worried with

the likes of Kei Nishikori, Stan

1:42:051:42:12

Wawrinka, Andy Murray, Djokovic, all

unable to compete at this event and

1:42:121:42:17

in the last few months of the tour

but the people here have been

1:42:171:42:21

thrilled to be a part of the show.

Zverev will be disappointed with

1:42:211:42:27

himself to have lost a tremendous

match with Jack Sock. The American

1:42:271:42:32

went through to the semifinal.

1:42:321:42:36

Well, the serve was 90 mph and the

forehand winner was 89. Who is the

1:43:581:44:04

baseline volley right now?

This

little chap. -- baseline volley.

He

1:44:041:44:16

looks so diminutive in his grey

socks, like he could not find any

1:44:161:44:21

white socks. His knees held together

with tape.

1:44:211:44:27

Very nice. 4-2. Roger needs to press

the non-off switch, he is running

1:44:321:44:49

out of time.

From Federer's point of

view, does he need to change

1:44:491:44:56

tactics? Do something different to

break the rhythm? Goffin is playing

1:44:561:45:02

incredible tennis. One thing is for

sure, he has to hold onto this

1:45:021:45:11

service game.

1:45:111:45:12

It looked plenty long, didn't it? Is

Roger Federer's year coming to a

1:46:061:46:17

close? Sensation of year, fabulous

comeback to the Torah. --

1:46:171:46:24

sensational. Fabulous comeback to

the tour.

1:46:241:46:39

One challenge in about ten minutes,

if he is not careful!

1:46:401:46:46

It is the right shot. The aggressive

is what has got into this position,

1:47:031:47:09

he cannot start pushing the ball in.

-- being aggressive.

1:47:091:47:18

Amazing. This great player. Just

struggling to get the physical

1:47:321:47:40

energy going, the motivation, after

being in this situation so many

1:47:401:47:49

times, his 14th semifinal in 15

appearances at the season-ending

1:47:491:47:54

championships, were based on a whole

year's effort and work and he keeps

1:47:541:47:59

coming back for more and he keeps

being upbeat about the training and

1:47:591:48:03

physical work. He just loves to head

the ball but it has been a little

1:48:031:48:07

bit join us a couple of times this

week but he has got the job done.

1:48:071:48:12

But he must get excited, you have

two get yourself up in this

1:48:121:48:16

situation?

There is no doubt that

Federer is competing at 100% of his

1:48:161:48:22

capabilities, probably not paying

100% but that has a lot to do with

1:48:221:48:28

his opponent, Goffin, seven games of

this, in the third set he thoroughly

1:48:281:48:34

deserves to be in the lead.

1:48:341:48:41

Federer, he won his first Wimbledon

before most of that lot were born, I

1:48:491:48:54

would guess! He has to get excited.

Make as quick as possible and hope

1:48:541:49:00

that Goffin drops off a little bit.

1:49:001:49:05

-- as quick as stark as possible.

1:49:131:49:15

If we had our customary that, you

would have chosen Federer?

Yes, but

1:50:441:50:50

we did not. -- bet.

One game away

from victory. This would be a

1:50:501:51:07

tremendous upset, especially after

that first set, 35 minutes, Roger

1:51:071:51:12

with that regal approach, clubbing

the winners, huge reception at any

1:51:121:51:18

time he does anything and Goffin has

just stuck around, played

1:51:181:51:22

beautifully. And he is one game

away.

1:51:221:51:28

He came in on a wing and a prayer,

Federer. He had to work hard for

1:51:351:51:43

this volley.

1:51:431:51:46

The kick-serve, he got up.

1:52:141:52:17

Federer getting outmanoeuvred from

the back of the court.

1:53:091:53:15

Goffin, two points from victory and

how he would like to seal the deal

1:53:341:53:37

here.

1:53:371:53:38

Do you think Goffin will be nervous

or is he on autopilot? This is what

1:54:221:54:28

you train for? I cannot imagine this

young man ever having had a bigger

1:54:281:54:34

game. Or having had to ensure a

longer 90 seconds. He is looking up

1:54:341:54:41

at some of the tennis on the big

screen.

That will give him

1:54:411:54:46

confidence. Before he goes out to

serve, which will unquestionably be

1:54:461:54:51

the biggest service game of his

tennis life.

He has beaten Djokovic

1:54:511:55:01

this year. He has beaten Nadal, he

has taken his country to the Davis

1:55:011:55:07

Cup final but this is a real

elevation, fascinating that he is

1:55:071:55:12

watching the point. Watching some of

the highlights going through.

1:55:121:55:18

He doesn't want to be watching how

good Roger's forehand is.

There are

1:55:221:55:28

a lot of highlights from the way he

has played in the second and third

1:55:281:55:33

sets that have gotten into this

position. Serving for any match, you

1:55:331:55:37

want to get onto a very good start

and the first couple of points will

1:55:371:55:41

be vital for both players.

1:55:411:55:45

That helps!

1:56:081:56:10

Absolute pinpoint serving. He hit

the center line twice on this first

1:56:271:56:33

two points. He has taken Federer out

of this game. That is where you put

1:56:331:56:43

it.

1:56:431:56:45

He went for the hat-trick.

1:56:541:56:56

There was not quite so much racquet

head acceleration on that forehand.

1:57:141:57:19

So many errors on the forehand side,

this legendary shot in our sport and

1:57:251:57:35

Goffin has gone them relentlessly.

One hour and 45 minutes. A big

1:57:351:57:41

surprise. Goffin, two match points

for a place in the final tomorrow

1:57:411:57:48

evening.

1:57:481:57:49

And he has done at! And no wonder...

He has beaten his hero, Ramadi has

1:57:541:58:03

never beaten before, Roger Federer.

-- a man he has never beaten. He

1:58:031:58:11

looks happy for his opponent and

that is nice.

1:58:111:58:16

APPLAUSE.

Tennis history for David Goffin. The

1:58:161:58:30

first man from his country to be in

the season-ending finale. It is

1:58:301:58:41

goodbye, Roger Federer.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

1:58:411:58:49

Another spectacular year. Seven

titles including an eight Wimbledon,

1:58:491:58:55

the Australian Open again and he

will finish as world number two. It

1:58:551:59:00

was a flat performance, it has to be

said. Into the third set,

1:59:001:59:04

uncharacteristically... Goffin going

through, the first man from his

1:59:041:59:12

country here, through to the

semifinal and final awaits. Grigor

1:59:121:59:17

Dimitrov or Jack Sock?

Say would you

like about Federer, Goffin was

1:59:171:59:24

sensational in the second and third

sets.

Well done! 26 years old. He

1:59:241:59:33

has demonstrated you don't have to

be 6.5 feet tall and full of muscles

1:59:331:59:38

to get the job done. What a

performance! He has beaten Rafa

1:59:381:59:43

Nadal and Federer this week. That

will make you feel pretty good about

1:59:431:59:48

yourself!

1:59:481:59:51

Looking forward to the final

tomorrow. We can get his thoughts.

1:59:552:00:04

Congratulations, that was a stunning

performance. You just scored your

2:00:042:00:07

first victory over Roger Federer.

Can you just sum up the win for us?

2:00:072:00:16

I have no words. I cannot describe

how I'm feeling for the moment. So

2:00:162:00:22

much joy, so much happiness. I'm so

happy to play the match I played in

2:00:222:00:27

front of you, against Roger. It was

such a special moment. I can't

2:00:272:00:31

describe it.

APPLAUSE

2:00:312:00:38

You played Roger six times and lost

all six previous encounters. You

2:00:382:00:42

said before this one you were going

to try something different today.

2:00:422:00:46

What was it that worked out?

Honestly, I don't know now! Yeah, it

2:00:462:00:53

was just the feeling the ball really

well. I was a bit nervous when I

2:00:532:01:01

started the match, and then I

started to feel the ball really

2:01:012:01:05

well, the second serve was there. It

helped me a lot at the end, because

2:01:052:01:10

I was nervous in the last game, but

I did some great serves and I was

2:01:102:01:14

really aggressive. I hit some great

forehands, so that was my day.

It

2:01:142:01:18

certainly was your day. You are into

your first ATP Finals. You will face

2:01:182:01:25

either Dimitrov Sock. Are you going

to watch it tonight? They are not

2:01:252:01:32

listening, so who would you prefer

to play?

Er, yeah, if you watch some

2:01:322:01:39

matches this week, you know the

answer. But now it's the final, it's

2:01:392:01:45

a different match. So, yeah, it's

always special to play a final and

2:01:452:01:51

obviously, for me to play the final

of the Masters, if it is Jack or

2:01:512:01:57

Grigor, it will be a match with a

lot of emotions, so it will be

2:01:572:02:00

different to the beginning of the

week. I will try and play at the

2:02:002:02:04

same level and try to be aggressive

and play my games. Try to win.

We

2:02:042:02:10

really enjoyed watching you play.

Well done, and we wish you all the

2:02:102:02:14

best of luck for tomorrow. David

Goffin!

2:02:142:02:16

CHEERING

Well, a well-deserved victory for

2:02:162:02:23

David Goffin, who was totally

outplayed in the opening set but he

2:02:232:02:25

found a way to get back in the

match, and he has put out his great

2:02:252:02:29

idol, a player he had never beaten.

Interesting, coming in today,

2:02:292:02:32

wondering how many games is Goffin

going to get, after only winning

2:02:322:02:38

three just two weeks ago. How did he

turn it around?

It was incredible.

2:02:382:02:45

I'm speechless. He was speechless

after the match as well. The first

2:02:452:02:49

set, it was as we expected. Federer

was patient from the back and

2:02:492:02:54

bullied him. The early part of the

second set, he played a great game

2:02:542:02:58

in the second set to break Federer,

he got up 3-0, and it was as if his

2:02:582:03:04

confidence went through the roof.

From that moment, he was aggressive

2:03:042:03:07

at the back of the court, he was

flattening his ball out and making

2:03:072:03:11

very few unforced errors, and that

is the challenge. Federer, at the

2:03:112:03:15

rally extended, he made mistakes,

and right to the end, Goffin never

2:03:152:03:22

blinked and deserved the victory.

He

was making Roger Federer's ground

2:03:222:03:27

shots look almost ordinary.

I don't

know whether game plan came from,

2:03:272:03:31

but some credit to his coach and to

David for sitting down and thinking

2:03:312:03:35

about what he wanted to do. Tim was

saying, get to Federer's backhand,

2:03:352:03:41

you have to go to his forehand

first, and it worked. I think

2:03:412:03:46

Federer was flat today, I don't know

why. A couple this week, we've

2:03:462:03:49

noticed he was a bit testy. He was

outplayed, but he looked a bit flat.

2:03:492:03:54

Looked like he wanted not to be

given to him, but didn't look like

2:03:542:03:58

he could dig deep, for whatever

reason, so a new man in the final

2:03:582:04:02

for us, and we celebrate that.

Roger

would hate to lose a match like

2:04:022:04:07

that, that he felt he was in control

of.

It will be tough, because he has

2:04:072:04:13

had such an incredible year, and to

finish on this type of real downer

2:04:132:04:16

is a big shock. But he is very good

at brushing those defeats off. He

2:04:162:04:23

has earned a well earned rest and

I'm sure he will have some holidays.

2:04:232:04:27

He will hit the practice court hard

to make sure he is ready for 2018.

2:04:272:04:32

For me, probably the biggest

surprise of the year.

We are heading

2:04:322:04:36

courtside to see Denis Shapovalov.

He will receive two awards, the

2:04:362:04:41

exciting young 18-year-old.

We now

have a special ceremony on court

2:04:412:04:48

here. Today, we celebrate the ATP

star of tomorrow, presented by

2:04:482:04:51

Emirates. ATP executive chairman and

president Chris Kermode will present

2:04:512:04:57

the trophy, so please give him a

warm welcome on to court.

2:04:572:05:03

APPLAUSE

2:05:032:05:05

Ladies and gentlemen, the winner of

the ATP star of tomorrow, presented

2:05:182:05:24

by Emirates, from Canada, Denis

Shapovalov.

2:05:242:05:27

APPLAUSE

2:05:272:05:32

This year, the ATP star of tomorrow,

by Emirates, has been awarded to

2:05:522:05:56

Denis Shapovalov.

For a third set

tie-break, taking down Nadal.

He

2:05:562:06:05

started the year outside the top 250

and reached a high of world number

2:06:052:06:09

49. He finished the season the

youngest player in the top 100, only

2:06:092:06:14

18 years old. No surprise that he

was also named most improved player

2:06:142:06:18

by his peers in the ATP awards,

presented by Melenchon Don. -- by

2:06:182:06:32

Moet & Chandon.

A star is indeed

born in Canada. Congratulations,

2:06:322:06:35

Dennis.

2:06:352:06:39

Congratulations, Denis It must be a

proud moment. How do you look back

2:07:292:07:33

on this year?

It's incredible to be

here. It's such an honour to win

2:07:332:07:39

these awards. It's so motivating for

me. I worked hard all year for this,

2:07:392:07:44

so to actually win this award means

everything.

It's your first visit to

2:07:442:07:49

the O2. I know you have enjoyed the

matches today. How much would you

2:07:492:07:53

love to come back and play one day?

I hope to be back one day. So many

2:07:532:07:59

good players deserve to be here so

to be named one of the top eight

2:07:592:08:03

would be a dream come true, so I'm

going to do everything I can to

2:08:032:08:08

hopefully one day play here.

And

your ambitions for next year?

2:08:082:08:12

Definitely win in ATP title and

probably finish around 25. If

2:08:122:08:18

everything goes well!

Well, I'm sure

it will, and we wish you all the

2:08:182:08:25

best. Enjoy this moment and the best

of luck for the future, Denis

2:08:252:08:29

Shapovalov!

Thank you, guys.

APPLAUSE

2:08:292:08:34

I think we are going to hear a lot

more from this young man, Denis

2:08:342:08:39

Shapovalov, so talented. You and I

met him at Queen's Club this summer

2:08:392:08:43

and what the last six months he's

had.

An amazing last six months, and

2:08:432:08:49

chatting to him at Queen's, where he

played a great match against Berdych

2:08:492:08:52

and others, we thought we were

watching something special, and we

2:08:522:08:55

were. He beat Rafa Nadal in Canada,

in Montreal. A brilliant tournament.

2:08:552:09:00

Fourth round, lost 16, of the US

Open. Started the year in happy

2:09:002:09:05

valley in Australia somewhere, and

it sounds lovely, but he was in a

2:09:052:09:12

challenger down there and had to

work his backside off to get to a

2:09:122:09:16

position where he was even entered

in the main tour of tour events, and

2:09:162:09:19

now he ends up 51 in the world or

so. A brilliant player with a

2:09:192:09:23

future, and I hope he sticks with

the coach he's got. We've got to

2:09:232:09:28

check with him that he still has the

same coach. We don't want ask the

2:09:282:09:34

wrong questions!

Hopefully he will

be joining us as soon as he gets off

2:09:342:09:37

court. Tim, a big game and a big

future.

Very much so, a lefty,

2:09:372:09:43

aggressive at the back of the court,

he uses his serve well, and getting

2:09:432:09:48

better physically all the time. It's

a great achievement to be as high as

2:09:482:09:52

he is in the rankings at age 18,

because it is a physically demanding

2:09:522:09:56

game, and he is only going to get

stronger and faster because he has

2:09:562:09:59

the right attitude to keep working

hard. And he will develop his game,

2:09:592:10:04

improved his strengths and

weaknesses, but then I think that

2:10:042:10:07

will give him a greater consistency.

At times, as he is only just

2:10:072:10:11

breaking through, he has been a bit

up and down, but he's going to be

2:10:112:10:15

around for many years.

Do you

remember when you were 18 what it

2:10:152:10:18

was like to play in the big events?

Big events in India, maybe! I'm not

2:10:182:10:25

sure about big events on the tour,

no. It's definitely took me probably

2:10:252:10:29

until I was about 21 until I broke

into the top 100. Everybody's

2:10:292:10:35

journey is different. Some developed

earlier, some later, but he is

2:10:352:10:39

certainly on the right path. As

Andrew said, the team around him is

2:10:392:10:43

important. He is on a steep learning

curve and it's important he has

2:10:432:10:47

people with experience around him to

make sure he makes the right

2:10:472:10:50

decisions, keeps working in the

right areas and moving in the right

2:10:502:10:54

direction, but what I see, it all

looks good for the future.

Boris

2:10:542:11:00

Becker was 17 and won Wimbledon and

I didn't think we'd ever see a

2:11:002:11:03

especially with the quality of play.

And Michael Chang winning the French

2:11:032:11:08

Open at a young age as well. The

days have gone where somebody bursts

2:11:082:11:13

through and win a slam. The players'

physicality is changing. They are

2:11:132:11:19

stronger, the science behind the

work they do of court, it takes

2:11:192:11:22

longer to put into the system. In

terms of sheer shotmaking, applauded

2:11:222:11:28

by Mannarino... I mean, look at this

guy! There are shots he plays that

2:11:282:11:33

can only happen if you have a

fantastic gift. Brilliant player. He

2:11:332:11:40

can produce so much tennis that

nobody else can, including his

2:11:402:11:43

second serve, which kicks like a

mule. His second serve, he aces

2:11:432:11:48

people with it even if they know

where it is going, where he is

2:11:482:11:52

aiming. It still kicks. He has

natural gifts.

He is walking up to

2:11:522:11:58

us. Back to Federer, and do you

think that was one match too many

2:11:582:12:01

after a long year for the

36-year-old?

Not really, and I think

2:12:012:12:06

lots of people will overanalyse it.

I don't think Federer played very

2:12:062:12:13

well, and I think Goffin played

brilliantly, simple as that. In the

2:12:132:12:17

first set, Federer did everything

right, and that early part of the

2:12:172:12:20

second set, when Goffin got the

break, he turned the tables. It

2:12:202:12:24

surprised me how he could maintain

that level, he didn't blink. Federer

2:12:242:12:29

had break points in the second and

third sets and couldn't take them.

2:12:292:12:32

For me, the better player on the day

won.

We have seen how can turn it

2:12:322:12:37

around somehow. But he didn't look

like he was able to.

I don't know

2:12:372:12:44

how many times you can keep on

calling on that competitive energy

2:12:442:12:47

year after year. We started the week

saluting Roger, every time he plays,

2:12:472:12:52

every time he wins the tournament,

every time he produces another

2:12:522:12:56

highlight for us to enjoy. He has

been out there since he was 14, 15,

2:12:562:13:02

16. That's 20 years. He started a

family and it all seems terribly

2:13:022:13:07

exciting in front of 17,500 people,

and he loves it, he loves hitting

2:13:072:13:11

the ball, but keep switching on

isn't easy on demand. I thought

2:13:112:13:15

adrenaline might kick in in the

third set, a survival instinct, but

2:13:152:13:18

I don't think it did. He had a half

chance I didn't take it. I think he

2:13:182:13:22

was ready in the last game and then

Goffin served brilliantly with two

2:13:222:13:28

aces. So I think Roger needs a rest

now. How he manages himself from

2:13:282:13:32

this point will be interesting. He

needs to come away so he can come

2:13:322:13:36

back with really enthusiasm each

time.

He definitely will be, but

2:13:362:13:40

let's salute David Goffin. He looks

tired during the week. He was

2:13:402:13:46

struggling this week, and then he

came out and played that Kenneth!

2:13:462:13:50

Incredible, against Rafa Nadal, Rafa

was struggling with his knees, but

2:13:502:13:55

Goffin put in a great performance,

winning that one, great to get his

2:13:552:14:00

first win under his belt. He came

out in the next match and got two

2:14:002:14:04

games, and struggled to get votes.

You were thinking, what's that going

2:14:042:14:07

to do to his confidence, and when he

lost the first three games against

2:14:072:14:13

Thiem, you thought, he could be

focusing on the Davis Cup shortly.

2:14:132:14:18

It has just been highs and lows.

Semifinals of the world tour final

2:14:182:14:24

against Federer, who he has never

beaten in six attempts, he plays two

2:14:242:14:27

of the best sets he has probably

ever played in his life.

And he

2:14:272:14:33

loses the first set in 35 minutes

without ever being in it. We thought

2:14:332:14:36

the first service game would set the

tone, but it wasn't to be the case.

2:14:362:14:40

I can't believe he was aiming at

that forehand and got away with it!

2:14:402:14:46

Excellent work.

He had a post of

Federer on his wall when he was

2:14:462:14:51

growing up. To come out and beat

your idol, he will have a

2:14:512:14:53

celebration tonight.

I think his

reaction at the end said it all. He

2:14:532:14:59

dropped his racket and looked around

as if to say, did that really

2:14:592:15:02

happen? It's important that he put

that behind him, because he has to

2:15:022:15:07

get ready for a massive final.

Doesn't it change may be the mindset

2:15:072:15:13

for tonight's match, with Dimitrov

and Sock?

To be fair, Dimitrov is

2:15:132:15:18

favourite to win this tournament now

but so much for my predictions, as

2:15:182:15:23

well as yours, all week! Dimitrov

has played some sensational tennis

2:15:232:15:28

this week. I think he has to be

favourite. But Jack Sock is in a

2:15:282:15:32

situation where he doesn't feel he

can lose. He doesn't play as if he

2:15:322:15:37

feels like the opposition are going

to win the last point against him.

2:15:372:15:41

So, you know, perhaps Jack goes in

thinking, this is it. Such a great

2:15:412:15:46

run.

I'm delighted that Dennis has

arrived. Tim, thank you. We will

2:15:462:15:50

make room for Dennis to join us.

Let's look back

2:15:502:15:53

make room for Dennis to join us.

Let's look back to this magnificent

2:15:532:15:55

victory at the Rogers Cup in

Montreal, in front of his home,

2:15:552:15:58

Canadian fans. An 18-year-old on the

brink of pulling off one of the

2:15:582:16:03

biggest upsets of the year against

world number one Rafael Nadal. Look

2:16:032:16:06

at that! This was quite some

victory, wasn't it?

We were running

2:16:062:16:18

some of these pictures earlier on

the wrong monitor, so sorry, while I

2:16:182:16:21

was talking to you! You can look at

Dennis playing and think, wow,

2:16:212:16:25

wouldn't it be nice to be a and this

gifted! Wonderful. The backhand... A

2:16:252:16:31

bit of work to be done on the

forehand side, and I'm sure that

2:16:312:16:34

will happen over the next few weeks.

But a fantastic year that sees him

2:16:342:16:39

going from 250 in the world in the

Challenge Tour working his way

2:16:392:16:44

through to moments like this. May

there be a lot more excitement

2:16:442:16:47

ahead.

Dennis, what did

2:16:472:16:50

there be a lot more excitement

ahead.

Dennis, what did that moment

2:16:502:16:50

feel like?

And unforgettable moment.

To be playing Rafa was incredible,

2:16:502:16:57

but to beat him was a dream come

true.

What was going through your

2:16:572:17:01

mind in the last few points?

I was

telling myself, at least I had a

2:17:012:17:07

chance, I had a match point, I can

tell people I had a match point on

2:17:072:17:11

Rafa. The whole time I was like, I

am playing this situation, but the

2:17:112:17:15

crowd did a good job of pumping me

up and helping me to stay calm. Just

2:17:152:17:21

pulled through it.

And it was a big

moment for you down there. How did

2:17:212:17:26

you enjoy it?

It was awesome to be

on that court and hopefully in a

2:17:262:17:29

couple of years I can be back,

playing.

And to win two awards!

2:17:292:17:36

Pretty special.

Incredible, my whole

team has put so much effort into me

2:17:362:17:40

this year, and so have I, so it is

really motivating to have a chance,

2:17:402:17:44

first of all, to be nominated for

these awards, but to actually win

2:17:442:17:48

them, it's unbelievable.

You had a

question about the team, didn't you?

2:17:482:17:56

You're not making any changes, are

you? Are you going to keep things

2:17:562:17:59

the way they are?

Definitely.

Have

you got a few weeks off before

2:17:592:18:05

Australia is to mock

I'm going to go

to Florida and train, to bring my

2:18:052:18:08

team down there, my fitness, physio

and Marty.

What sort of things are

2:18:082:18:16

you working on? The backhand looks

strong. Your serve looks

2:18:162:18:19

unbelievable. Do you consider the

forehand a shot you want to work on?

2:18:192:18:25

I think my forehand is my big weapon

but it could improve. My slice could

2:18:252:18:29

improve, my returns and volleys, so

many aspects we can work on. They

2:18:292:18:34

could make a difference for next

season. Also, physically, I want to

2:18:342:18:39

improve. Just working a lot on my

footwork, making sure my steps are

2:18:392:18:43

sharp, and stepping up to the ball

well.

You've had a wonderful few

2:18:432:18:51

weeks in the summer, because we

showed Rafa but you also beat Del

2:18:512:18:54

Potro. Did things change for you?

You were launched into the

2:18:542:18:58

spotlight.

Definitely. I went from

being an underdog, not knowing that

2:18:582:19:04

well, to being suddenly in the

spotlight. The following week, US

2:19:042:19:10

Open, qualifying...

That isn't easy.

Yes, very difficult, but I managed

2:19:102:19:15

to play well and I was on the news a

lot, so my life definitely changed.

2:19:152:19:19

Yes. I think for the better. I get

to play more ATP tournaments, I get

2:19:192:19:25

to travel and tour. Just do what I

always dream of doing.

And then you

2:19:252:19:31

went on at the US Open and you beat

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, one big name

2:19:312:19:35

after another! Do you enjoy the big

occasions more?

Definitely, it was

2:19:352:19:41

so fun to be at the Arthur Ashe

stadium in front of all of these

2:19:412:19:45

people. It was crazy. I just go out

there and have fun. Being 18, there

2:19:452:19:49

is nothing to and I just enjoyed my

time. I really tried to take

2:19:492:19:54

advantage of the situation and I

think I did a good job.

What did you

2:19:542:20:00

make of that match? You were sitting

courtside.

It was incredible. I

2:20:002:20:05

think David played unbelievable. He

was going for his shots, not

2:20:052:20:09

hesitating. At one point, I thought

he was going to slow down and Roger

2:20:092:20:13

would come back, but he was serving

big at the end, still going for his

2:20:132:20:17

strokes, so he played really well.

Who was the player you admired most

2:20:172:20:23

growing up?

Roger. I had pictures of

him on my wall that I would wake up

2:20:232:20:29

and go to sleep and just trying to

copy my game to be like his.

You

2:20:292:20:33

were three years old when he won his

first Wimbledon! This is how long

2:20:332:20:38

Roger has been out there. No wonder

everybody looks up to him. I was

2:20:382:20:42

interested in your life changed.

Your friends and family, everybody

2:20:422:20:49

relates to you differently when you

are a start on the TV.

I bet mum

2:20:492:20:55

doesn't.

Does she still tell you of?

My family and friends still treat me

2:20:552:21:01

the same way that I was two or three

years ago. For me, that's important.

2:21:012:21:05

To stay the same person, you know.

That is how I was raised, and I

2:21:052:21:11

believe it should be like that. I am

very lucky to have such good parents

2:21:112:21:15

and their brother who will pick my

ask -- who will kick my behind if I

2:21:152:21:26

start acting up.

Do you have a

girlfriend?

Stop asking these

2:21:262:21:31

questions!

Just say, I don't want to

answer that.

Changing the subject,

2:21:312:21:37

have you felt the pressure of the

expectations that are now on you?

2:21:372:21:44

Definitely, the second half of the

season, it was difficult and I was

2:21:442:21:48

running into some difficult draws

and top players. I was going through

2:21:482:21:52

some things, being sick, not playing

well, kind of losing my rhythm. But,

2:21:522:22:00

you know, I still felt, actually,

towards the next gen finals, I

2:22:002:22:03

started finding my game again and

was playing well. But that is just

2:22:032:22:06

how the sport goes. You can be

playing well and then you run into

2:22:062:22:11

some bad draws and you are losing

and, suddenly, you win one match and

2:22:112:22:15

you pick your game up. I'm very

happy with where I left off.

2:22:152:22:22

Starting outside 250 and now just 51

in the world, and you were inside

2:22:222:22:26

the top 50 earlier, an unbelievable

year. Points to defend and

2:22:262:22:30

everything next year, but such an

exciting group of youngsters coming

2:22:302:22:34

up.

Definitely, there are so many

good young guys coming up. I think

2:22:342:22:38

it's great that they made this next

gen tournament for the young

2:22:382:22:42

players, because there are so many

guys that are going to be huge

2:22:422:22:47

stars. Even though there are only

eight in that tournament, there are

2:22:472:22:50

countless others that deserve to be

there, and they are going to be

2:22:502:22:53

great players. It's really good to

see these young guys coming up side

2:22:532:22:58

by side, and it's great that we

already get along. It's a nice

2:22:582:23:01

atmosphere.

You are one of the most

exciting of all, and we appreciate

2:23:012:23:06

you coming up here. Congratulations.

Before we go, we're going to look at

2:23:062:23:12

Grigor Dimitrov, who plays Jack Sock

in the second semifinal perceiving,

2:23:122:23:14

and he has been talking to us about

finally fulfilling his potential. --

2:23:142:23:21

in the second semifinal this

evening.

Two or three years ago when

2:23:212:23:23

I was at my lowest, I had pretty

much embrace everything, and I was

2:23:232:23:30

never a guy that doesn't like to

practice. I like to go in the gym

2:23:302:23:35

and all that was I was in such a

different headspace. My mobility

2:23:352:23:40

wasn't good enough. Everything was

just kind of crumbling down for me,

2:23:402:23:48

and this is far more assets to I

have to stop with this thing. I

2:23:482:23:53

structured a good team around me and

step-by-step I've started to be

2:23:532:23:56

better. Everybody deserves credit

for that. To come out on court every

2:23:562:24:01

day just give a little something,

you know, that adds up in the

2:24:012:24:05

long-term. You put the platform but

you still need to build stuff.

2:24:052:24:13

Everybody just brings positive

ideas, positive thoughts, and

2:24:132:24:15

step-by-step I'm starting to fall

into that good track again and

2:24:152:24:23

embrace everything else along the

way.

Talking a good game, isn't he?

2:24:232:24:28

He has got better and better with

matches.

Yeah, talking a good game

2:24:282:24:33

and playing a good game. For me, he

has had the best performances of the

2:24:332:24:39

tournament, in terms of his

consistency is the level he has

2:24:392:24:41

played. It will be interesting

against Sock, with their head to

2:24:412:24:46

head, because I think Dimitrov is

the favourite, but he has lost all

2:24:462:24:50

three of the four occasions.

Twice

he has had match point and he lost

2:24:502:24:56

to Sock.

Will be interesting.

A

totally different match for these

2:24:562:25:02

players tonight, but Dimitrov seems

to have the game and the desire, and

2:25:022:25:06

he is coming of age, isn't he?

Everybody arrived at that point

2:25:062:25:11

where they think, this is the career

I've chosen and I want to achieve my

2:25:112:25:16

potential. I don't need to be going

out quite so much. I want to put the

2:25:162:25:20

extra timing on the court and

maximise my potential. I don't want

2:25:202:25:24

to go through my career and not

achieve what I should have. I think

2:25:242:25:28

Grigor Dimitrov is there. He said

that at the start of the year, when

2:25:282:25:31

he went to the semifinal of the

Australian Open and played one of

2:25:312:25:34

the matches of the year against

Nadal. I can't believe he lost it.

2:25:342:25:38

From the word go this year, he has

been focused, so well done to

2:25:382:25:43

Grigor, who is 26 and producing his

best tennis. I think we have seen

2:25:432:25:48

him elevate it to a level he has

never played before.

He has always

2:25:482:25:50

had the shots but now it seems he

has the belief.

He has always had

2:25:502:25:56

the shots and pieces of the puzzle

but, mentally, I think he struggled

2:25:562:26:00

to really understand the best way

for him to play to his strengths

2:26:002:26:03

and, to deal with the expectation of

the court, people saying he was the

2:26:032:26:10

next Federer, which was probably a

bit unfair. He has really turned

2:26:102:26:14

things around. Not so long ago, he

was down at 40 in the world, and you

2:26:142:26:19

said, I got this guy, with such

great athletic ability, who works

2:26:192:26:22

really hard and has great shots, how

can he be ranked at 40? It is about

2:26:222:26:28

playing to your strengths and

putting the pieces of the puzzle

2:26:282:26:31

together, and I have been impressed

with how he has played. I thought

2:26:312:26:35

that match against Goffin would be

tricky for him in the group stages,

2:26:352:26:38

but he destroyed him by being

patient from the back of the court,

2:26:382:26:43

waiting for his opportunity and

playing aggressively, going for his

2:26:432:26:47

shots and not making unforced

errors. That is what Federer was

2:26:472:26:50

trying to do today but he couldn't

do it

Dimitrov Gethsemane shots, but

2:26:502:26:55

I guess it is difficult to know

which one to use when, when you have

2:26:552:27:00

people writing. -- Dimitrov has got

so many shots.

Nothing wrong with

2:27:002:27:04

your game pigs he had a great junior

career. He was prepared to go home

2:27:042:27:12

-- to leave home at an early age. He

has paid the price for a long time

2:27:122:27:16

and now it is definitely Dimitrov's

moment. Only a couple of areas which

2:27:162:27:21

might be difficult, the second

serve, Jack Sock will try and get on

2:27:212:27:25

top of that and trying to bully him

from the back of the court, because

2:27:252:27:30

the Sock forehand is enormous.

I

think we have learned that anything

2:27:302:27:35

can happen in tennis today. Jack

Sock is an incredible competitor.

He

2:27:352:27:40

is, and his year has turned around.

24 in the world going into Paris, he

2:27:402:27:44

wins that, he qualifies here, he

plays Federer in the first round

2:27:442:27:48

and, in the first match, he loses

that Bob gets to sample the occasion

2:27:482:27:52

and, boy, is he taking that

opportunity. It's very important now

2:27:522:27:58

that they've focused on the process,

not the outcome, because it would be

2:27:582:28:05

easy to get distracted.

Three

debutants.

And who would have

2:28:052:28:10

thought that!

We got it all wrong,

all week!

A huge shock today, with

2:28:102:28:16

David Goffin defeating Roger

Federer. Tonight, it is Jack Sock

2:28:162:28:19

against Grigor Dimitrov. When of

that play in the final. We will be

2:28:192:28:23

on air at 6pm on BBC Two tomorrow,

but David Goffin today beat his idol

2:28:232:28:29

for the first time, the man he had

on a poster on the wall.

A great

2:28:292:28:38

reception for both players. Federer

in a different league. What is going

2:28:382:28:43

on? That's just naughty. That was a

little bit special from Federer. And

2:28:432:28:48

he's got the break! They are into a

decider. Goffin just continues to

2:28:482:28:54

impress. Tennis
