Hello, and a very warm welcome to The Adventure Show.

0:00:290:00:31

Ooh, that's going to hurt.

0:00:310:00:33

Well, once again, the Highlands of Scotland are alive to the sound

0:00:330:00:36

of cheering crowds and crunching gears

0:00:360:00:38

as the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup returns to Fort William.

0:00:380:00:42

This really has become a staple of the adventure calendar in Scotland,

0:00:420:00:46

and it's easy to forget just how tough and gruelling

0:00:460:00:48

this Aonach Mor course really is.

0:00:480:00:50

We'll be covering both the 2.8km downhill track,

0:00:520:00:55

which is one of the toughest courses on the world circuit,

0:00:550:00:59

and the incredible 4X,

0:00:590:01:01

where the difference between success and failure is the slip of a tyre.

0:01:010:01:04

The track is really wild.

0:01:040:01:06

It's really rough, with some big jumps in there,

0:01:060:01:09

so it's really exciting for us racers.

0:01:090:01:11

And this is a very special Fort William,

0:01:110:01:14

because this is the last time that legend of the sport

0:01:140:01:17

and fans' favourite Steve Peat

0:01:170:01:18

competes here in Scotland at World Cup.

0:01:180:01:21

He has given so much to the sport,

0:01:210:01:24

so this is going to be an emotional weekend for him

0:01:240:01:26

and all the other people that have ridden against him over the years.

0:01:260:01:29

I think the old boys like Peaty and that, they don't slow down.

0:01:290:01:32

They're always going for it.

0:01:320:01:34

I just saw him up on the hill now, and he's flying.

0:01:340:01:36

Later in this month's programme, we'll be looking back

0:01:380:01:40

at the achievements of this mountain biking legend.

0:01:400:01:44

We'll catch up with how I'm getting on as I prepare

0:01:440:01:47

for the Braveheart Triathlon.

0:01:470:01:49

Now, just whose idea was that?

0:01:490:01:51

Go on, Dougie, you can do this.

0:01:510:01:53

And Michael tries out Fort William's latest indoor challenge,

0:01:530:01:57

for those rare rainy days in Lochaber.

0:01:570:02:00

Oh, my word. How are you meant to go from there up to anywhere?

0:02:000:02:04

This is ridiculous.

0:02:040:02:05

But first, here to the action in Fort William,

0:02:070:02:09

where we start with the 4X.

0:02:090:02:10

This is the event that demands most of the rider.

0:02:100:02:13

It's one of the most technical.

0:02:130:02:14

It's a fantastic combination of aggression, line choice,

0:02:140:02:17

and pure racing ability.

0:02:170:02:19

You can outwit your opponents a bit, see if you can take their lines.

0:02:190:02:22

They're going to try and take you off your bike as well.

0:02:220:02:25

You're in for the fight.

0:02:250:02:27

We're kicking off the action with the women's event,

0:02:270:02:29

where 26-year-old Hannah Escott from the Midlands

0:02:290:02:32

has battled her way to a place in the finals.

0:02:320:02:34

It's a dream come true.

0:02:340:02:36

I remember when I first started mountain biking,

0:02:360:02:38

Fort William World Cup was THE one.

0:02:380:02:40

It was the massive thing that you look out for.

0:02:400:02:42

And to be here racing is one thing,

0:02:420:02:44

but my real goal is to get on that podium this year.

0:02:440:02:46

I've been in the gym for it, training all winter, all weathers,

0:02:460:02:49

and you just think, "Fort Bill, Fort Bill."

0:02:490:02:51

When you're nailing down that last little bit in the gym,

0:02:510:02:53

or when you're thinking, "I've got to go out in the rain today," it's all about Fort Bill.

0:02:530:02:57

But today's competition is fierce, and one of the most talented riders

0:02:570:03:02

is former 4X champion Steffi Marth from Germany.

0:03:020:03:05

There's so much action. Four riders, it's really close.

0:03:050:03:08

It's like, in the corners there's so much happening,

0:03:080:03:10

and there's overtaking and crashing,

0:03:100:03:12

and it's just awesome for the crowds, too.

0:03:120:03:14

So just really nice to entertain them.

0:03:140:03:17

So, this is it - it's time for the women's final.

0:03:170:03:20

And lining up in gate one, race favourite Steffi Marth.

0:03:200:03:23

She's up against three Brits.

0:03:230:03:25

Gate two, the fastest qualifier, Monet Adams from Bristol.

0:03:250:03:29

Next to her, it's Hannah Escott.

0:03:290:03:31

And finally, another rider

0:03:310:03:32

from south of the border, Amanda Tanfield.

0:03:320:03:35

Gate down. And it's Steffi Marth straight into the lead.

0:03:360:03:39

Hannah Escott and Monet Adams battling for second place.

0:03:390:03:42

Monet's crept ahead already - something of a dark horse here.

0:03:420:03:45

Normally a downhill and Enduro racer,

0:03:450:03:47

today she's on a borrowed bike.

0:03:470:03:49

But Steffi Marth is dominating this race.

0:03:490:03:52

She's still out in front as they hurtle through the rock garden.

0:03:520:03:55

Steffi's someone who also competes in downhill.

0:03:550:03:57

A real all-rounder.

0:03:570:03:59

Towards the last corner -

0:03:590:04:00

not much doubt who's going to win today.

0:04:000:04:03

Steffi Marth is having an amazing race.

0:04:030:04:06

Yeah, she's in a different class. Over the line first.

0:04:060:04:08

Monet Adams in second, with Hannah Escott coming in third.

0:04:080:04:12

But what a ride from Steffi Marth.

0:04:120:04:14

It was pretty hard for me, just because I do downhill, too,

0:04:140:04:17

and my legs are just done now.

0:04:170:04:19

It's so hard to do downhill today and then the 4X.

0:04:190:04:22

But yeah, it was so much fun.

0:04:220:04:24

The crowds are amazing.

0:04:240:04:25

So, confirmation of those final results.

0:04:250:04:27

All that hard training has paid off for Hannah Escott,

0:04:270:04:30

who takes third place.

0:04:300:04:32

Monet Adams was second.

0:04:320:04:33

But the clear winner today was Steffi Marth.

0:04:330:04:36

Congratulations to Steffi - that really was a gutsy performance.

0:04:370:04:40

Now the women are taking a bit of a rest, and it's the men's turn.

0:04:400:04:44

Leading the field for the Brits is Scott Beaumont from Kidderminster.

0:04:450:04:48

For him, this race is as much about strategy as brute force.

0:04:480:04:52

There's two different start techniques.

0:04:520:04:54

You either watch the traffic lights or you listen for the beeps.

0:04:540:04:57

I listen to the beeps, and you're just waiting for that first beep

0:04:570:04:59

to go off, and you just explode out the start and make it happen.

0:04:590:05:02

This is a course with a notorious reputation.

0:05:020:05:05

But it's one that 4X riders like Felix Beckeman from Sweden relish.

0:05:050:05:10

For our season, it's one of the best courses.

0:05:100:05:12

It's challenging, it's loose, it's rocky, big jumps,

0:05:120:05:15

rock garden, so it's got everything in there.

0:05:150:05:17

So yeah, it's a good track.

0:05:170:05:19

And when you're on a course like this,

0:05:190:05:21

do you hear the noise of the crowd?

0:05:210:05:23

Because they seem, to us, to be pretty crazy.

0:05:230:05:25

Yeah, if you're putting up a big whip on the big table there,

0:05:250:05:28

the crowd goes crazy. And yeah, the crowd is very good here,

0:05:280:05:31

one of the best.

0:05:310:05:33

In 2015, one of the world's top racers,

0:05:330:05:36

Czech rider Tomas Slavik,

0:05:360:05:38

was out of the game with a major illness.

0:05:380:05:40

Now he's back.

0:05:400:05:42

Last year I was having really big problems with my health,

0:05:420:05:45

because my immune system completely collapsed.

0:05:450:05:48

So it was pretty hard times.

0:05:480:05:50

But I'm getting back into it again,

0:05:500:05:52

and I already won the first round of Pro Tour.

0:05:520:05:55

Where do you think on the course this race can be won and lost?

0:05:550:05:58

I think it's the last two turns.

0:05:580:05:59

There is a pretty big jump which not many guys are jumping,

0:05:590:06:03

and if you really want to pass the guy who's in front of you

0:06:030:06:05

and he's not jumping because it's risky to jump the jump in a race,

0:06:050:06:08

you just basically jump the jump, dive to the inside,

0:06:080:06:11

and try to pass the guy in front of you.

0:06:110:06:13

Really looking forward to what's going to happen this year.

0:06:130:06:16

And what a line-up we've got for the first semifinal.

0:06:160:06:18

In gate one, it's Bogdan Bondor from Romania.

0:06:180:06:22

Then it's race favourite Tomas Slavik from the Czech Republic.

0:06:220:06:26

Scott Beaumont, Britain's best hope, is in gate three.

0:06:260:06:28

And finally, another strong British rider, Joe Mallinson, in gate four.

0:06:280:06:33

Green light for go, and they're off.

0:06:340:06:36

Tomas Slavik's taken the lead.

0:06:360:06:38

Scott Beaumont just behind.

0:06:380:06:40

Could this be the year that Boom Boom Beaumont takes the top spot?

0:06:400:06:43

Now all he has to do is get to the final.

0:06:430:06:45

It's the first two across the line who'll go through.

0:06:450:06:49

Looking good, though - Slavik may be out in front,

0:06:490:06:52

Beaumont well ahead of the other two.

0:06:520:06:54

Oh! Bit of a slip from Tomas Slavik.

0:06:540:06:56

Can Beaumont take advantage?

0:06:560:06:58

But what a quick recovery from Slavik.

0:06:580:07:00

Great jump as he powers towards the last corner.

0:07:000:07:03

It'll be very hard to catch him on this run.

0:07:040:07:06

Yeah, down to the final straight, quick glance behind,

0:07:060:07:09

but he is in the clear. Over the step-down,

0:07:090:07:12

it's Tomas Slavik across the line first, with Scott Beaumont second.

0:07:120:07:16

They'll go through to the final.

0:07:160:07:17

Bogdan Bondor and Joe Mallinson are out.

0:07:170:07:20

So up to the top again for the second semi,

0:07:210:07:23

and the competition is fierce.

0:07:230:07:25

Swedish rider Felix Beckeman is in gate one,

0:07:250:07:28

coming back into the field after a year of injuries.

0:07:280:07:31

Then it's last year's 4X Pro Tour champion,

0:07:310:07:33

Frenchman Quentin Derbier.

0:07:330:07:35

Next to him is Britain's Will Evans from Cornwall,

0:07:350:07:38

and finally, it's the young German rider, Benedict Last.

0:07:380:07:41

Very even out of the gate. Neck and neck.

0:07:420:07:44

No, Evans is behind there,

0:07:440:07:46

struggling to stay up with the other three.

0:07:460:07:48

Shoulder to shoulder into the first corner.

0:07:480:07:51

Jostling for position.

0:07:510:07:52

This is 4X at its very best.

0:07:520:07:54

Beckeman and Derbier out in front.

0:07:540:07:57

Derbier on the inside line.

0:07:570:07:58

So dry and skittish today.

0:07:580:08:01

Derbier is first through into the rock garden.

0:08:010:08:04

Stumbling over those difficult rocks, Benedict Last struggling.

0:08:040:08:07

That means Evans is through, moved up into third.

0:08:070:08:10

Could he make it into the top two?

0:08:100:08:12

Flying into the final corner, can he make it past Beckeman?

0:08:120:08:15

He's so close, pushing right to the edge.

0:08:150:08:18

But Beckeman's held on. It's Quentin Derbier across first.

0:08:190:08:21

Felix Beckeman second. They're through to the final.

0:08:210:08:24

Will Evans, unlucky, and Benedict Last, both out.

0:08:240:08:28

So now it's time for the finals.

0:08:280:08:30

Look at this for a battle of the big guns.

0:08:300:08:32

Gate one, Swedish rider Felix Beckeman.

0:08:320:08:35

Next to him, the man who's dominated 4X for so many years,

0:08:350:08:38

Tomas Slavik.

0:08:380:08:40

In gate three, from France, Quentin Derbier.

0:08:400:08:42

And finally, Britain's very own Scott Beaumont.

0:08:420:08:45

Gate down, they're off.

0:08:460:08:48

Neck and neck out of the start line.

0:08:480:08:50

Tomas Slavik crept ahead. Beckeman second. Derbier third.

0:08:500:08:53

Beaumont bringing up the rear. Come on, Scotty, keep it together.

0:08:530:08:56

You can do this.

0:08:560:08:58

Slavik still well out in front. Other three bunching up behind.

0:08:580:09:02

Derbier has taken that inside line.

0:09:030:09:05

It's enough to get him past Beckeman into second place for the moment.

0:09:050:09:08

It's a scramble now into the rock garden.

0:09:080:09:10

Beaumont's unclipped. He's now well behind.

0:09:100:09:13

But look at Tomas Slavik. Out into the lead and up into the air.

0:09:130:09:16

He just loves this sport,

0:09:160:09:17

and he's miles ahead as he swings round the last corner.

0:09:170:09:20

Over the step-down and onto the finish.

0:09:200:09:23

Derbier's still in second.

0:09:230:09:24

But it's Slavik over the line first.

0:09:240:09:27

Look at this - Boom Boom Beaumont makes it onto the podium in third.

0:09:270:09:31

No question, though, today's race belongs to Tomas Slavik.

0:09:310:09:35

I really enjoyed every second on the track.

0:09:350:09:37

I was really having some good lines on the track,

0:09:370:09:39

so I felt quite confident.

0:09:390:09:41

But it's still 4X, and you never know what's going to happen.

0:09:410:09:44

So I'm pretty stoked with the first spot after two years here.

0:09:440:09:47

So...excited.

0:09:470:09:48

So, confirmation of those final results.

0:09:480:09:51

Britain's Scott Beaumont didn't achieve his dream

0:09:510:09:53

of a win here today, coming in third.

0:09:530:09:56

In second was Frenchman Quentin Derbier.

0:09:560:09:58

But the emphatic winner was Tomas Slavik

0:09:580:10:01

from the Czech Republic.

0:10:010:10:03

Amazing performances there.

0:10:030:10:04

Shoulder to shoulder racing and bruised bodies.

0:10:040:10:06

Congratulations to Steffi and to Tomas.

0:10:060:10:09

Now we're heading not very far from here,

0:10:090:10:11

just down the road, to Fort William,

0:10:110:10:13

where Michael Stewart is quite literally

0:10:130:10:15

stretching his body to the limit

0:10:150:10:17

in a new facility that opened in early May.

0:10:170:10:19

I'm still a relative newcomer to the world of adventure sports.

0:10:280:10:31

So far I've tried my hand at mountain biking, fell running,

0:10:310:10:34

and I've had a kayaking trip I'm not going to forget any time soon.

0:10:340:10:37

I've had enough.

0:10:390:10:40

Now there's something else for me to try my hand at.

0:10:420:10:45

I've come to the Three Wise Monkeys.

0:10:450:10:47

It's a brand-new climbing wall right here in Fort William.

0:10:470:10:50

Are my muscles going to be ready for this?

0:10:500:10:52

Well, there's only one way to find out.

0:10:520:10:54

So, what you going to set me off in here, Oliver?

0:10:550:10:57

I thought I'd start you off with a bit of bouldering.

0:10:570:11:00

-Yeah.

-So quick safety briefing -

0:11:000:11:01

if you jump from the top and land on your head, it'll still hurt.

0:11:010:11:04

The bouldering mat doesn't remove the risk of injury.

0:11:040:11:06

-OK.

-Got that? Good.

0:11:060:11:08

Basically, in here the routes are all different coloured handholds.

0:11:080:11:11

So you start following one colour of handholds

0:11:110:11:14

from the bottom to the top, and then come back down again in control.

0:11:140:11:17

What colour do you think you're going to set me off on?

0:11:170:11:19

-Well, turquoise is the easiest.

-Right.

0:11:190:11:21

And then it's black. So somebody of your calibre should be able

0:11:210:11:25

to quite comfortably do all the blacks.

0:11:250:11:27

Good start.

0:11:270:11:28

LAUGHTER

0:11:280:11:30

Don't make me laugh. I'll fall off.

0:11:310:11:33

And I definitely don't want to be falling off on camera.

0:11:330:11:36

You're going to be climbing up this in, like, ninja silence.

0:11:360:11:40

You know, really cool, creeping.

0:11:400:11:42

-No noise.

-Yeah.

0:11:420:11:43

Good stuff.

0:11:470:11:48

Sometimes when you're bouldering, cos the walls are a bit shorter,

0:11:480:11:51

you actually start sat down on the floor to give yourself maximum value

0:11:510:11:54

of climbing, so we can have you starting like that

0:11:540:11:57

and climb in that smooth ninja style you showed earlier

0:11:570:12:02

all the way to that top hold up there.

0:12:020:12:04

Oh, my word. How are you meant to go from there up to anywhere?

0:12:050:12:08

This is ridiculous.

0:12:080:12:10

Maybe, as you're struggling with the bottom move,

0:12:100:12:12

let's try a standing start, so if you...

0:12:120:12:14

I think I like the sound of that better.

0:12:140:12:16

..start instead on these two, and see how you get on from there.

0:12:160:12:19

Great.

0:12:210:12:22

See if you can get your right hand up again on that next good one.

0:12:220:12:26

Argh!

0:12:260:12:27

HE GROANS

0:12:270:12:28

Please tell me this isn't a simple line.

0:12:280:12:30

-Mm, it's medium simple.

-HE LAUGHS

0:12:300:12:32

-Medium simple.

-Medium simple?

0:12:320:12:35

I'd not necessarily expect a beginner to get it straight away.

0:12:350:12:38

-Would you expect them to get it by now?

-Mm...

0:12:380:12:42

Good. I'm not like this with, like, normal people, you know.

0:12:420:12:45

What, I'm not normal?

0:12:450:12:47

LAUGHTER

0:12:470:12:48

HE EXHALES VIOLENTLY

0:12:480:12:50

Oh, my forearms are absolutely gone.

0:12:500:12:54

Good. Well done.

0:12:550:12:56

HE STRAINS

0:12:560:12:57

Ah, ya..

0:13:020:13:03

Argh!

0:13:050:13:06

Go on, keep going, keep going.

0:13:060:13:08

Come on. Come on!

0:13:080:13:10

HE STRAINS

0:13:100:13:11

Get your feet nice and high. Go for it.

0:13:110:13:14

LAUGHTER

0:13:150:13:17

Right, Oliver. You've thrown plenty stick my way.

0:13:180:13:21

Are you going to show me how you get up this?

0:13:210:13:23

Am I right in thinking that historically, indoor climbing

0:13:240:13:27

was viewed as the ugly sister, almost, of outdoor climbing?

0:13:270:13:30

Could say that. I've been really pleased, cos I was expecting

0:13:300:13:33

a little bit in the run-up to us opening

0:13:330:13:36

that we would get a fair bit of that.

0:13:360:13:38

Is this the ninja style you were telling me about?

0:13:380:13:40

Something like that.

0:13:400:13:42

But we've had minimal complaints

0:13:420:13:45

from anybody... That don't view it as real climbing.

0:13:450:13:48

I mean, this place is clearly not trying to be an outdoor crag.

0:13:480:13:50

Very nice, very nice.

0:13:520:13:53

It's good fun. There's a nice vibe and atmosphere.

0:13:530:13:56

Like, on a weeknight there's a good 20 or 30 people in here,

0:13:560:14:00

and you can all have a chat. It's like a healthy pub, I suppose.

0:14:000:14:04

LAUGHTER

0:14:040:14:06

Oliver, I don't think I've disgraced myself,

0:14:060:14:08

although I didn't manage to do it all.

0:14:080:14:09

I'm going to go down to the main hall now and get a challenge

0:14:090:14:12

on the roped routes.

0:14:120:14:13

So we're going to have a go at this lilac route.

0:14:130:14:16

Lilac's like... You'll be fine.

0:14:160:14:19

It'll be highly entertaining.

0:14:200:14:22

I think what's really good about climbing

0:14:240:14:26

is that it's really mentally absorbing.

0:14:260:14:29

And it doesn't necessarily have to be in a fear of height kind of way.

0:14:290:14:33

It's all about the puzzle and the problem-solving and the challenge.

0:14:330:14:36

And the fact that we can really easily step the challenge

0:14:360:14:39

up and down depending on who it is,

0:14:390:14:41

so it's always going to be challenging.

0:14:410:14:44

How are you feeling up there?

0:14:440:14:45

HE STRAINS

0:14:460:14:47

Good. Go on.

0:14:470:14:49

I remember when I was younger, sort of still getting into climbing,

0:14:490:14:52

and watching some climbing film, and looking at this guy

0:14:520:14:55

doing this route and thinking, "I could do that. He made that look pretty simple."

0:14:550:14:59

It's just, you put your hand there and then you put your hand there,

0:14:590:15:02

and then you get on the holds and you can't hold them.

0:15:020:15:04

And you think, "Oh, that's interesting."

0:15:040:15:07

HE LAUGHS

0:15:070:15:08

Argh!

0:15:080:15:09

Annoying!

0:15:110:15:13

I couldn't see where on earth..

0:15:130:15:15

Really annoying.

0:15:160:15:19

Done.

0:15:200:15:21

Finito.

0:15:210:15:23

LAUGHTER

0:15:230:15:24

Welcome back to Aonach Mor for the downhill.

0:15:350:15:38

This course is described as one of the toughest on the world circuit.

0:15:380:15:41

In previous years, there's been a lot of competition

0:15:410:15:43

in the women's race between the French and the British,

0:15:430:15:46

but with two key retirements in the French camp,

0:15:460:15:49

the course is clear for the Brits.

0:15:490:15:51

Let's hope so.

0:15:510:15:53

A few years back, it was quite usual

0:15:530:15:55

to see five French girls on the podium,

0:15:550:15:57

but now we're only, like, a few of us.

0:15:570:16:00

I guess it's different. Depends on the years,

0:16:000:16:03

and the British girls are obviously really good at the moment!

0:16:030:16:07

This year, Morgane Charre is heading up the French attack,

0:16:070:16:11

but one of the Brits who's really making a mark

0:16:110:16:13

is Manon Carpenter from Wales.

0:16:130:16:15

Last year, she was on course for a win,

0:16:150:16:18

but crashed out in spectacular style.

0:16:180:16:21

Didn't quite have enough speed on one of the jumps,

0:16:210:16:23

but I wanted to do it, and I'd been doing it over the weekend.

0:16:230:16:26

Just the weather was pretty foul last year,

0:16:260:16:27

and it's made it that bit harder for us.

0:16:270:16:29

Is it in your head that you had such a big spill?

0:16:290:16:32

I mean, I'm sure you've seen it.

0:16:320:16:34

A little bit, cos when you're coming up to it,

0:16:340:16:36

you're really tired from a race run,

0:16:360:16:37

and then you can just see the takeoff,

0:16:370:16:39

you can't see anything behind it, cos you land on a downslope into the arena,

0:16:390:16:43

so you're just paddling at this wall that you've got to take off of.

0:16:430:16:46

You literally just paddle as hard as you can and pull up as hard as you can,

0:16:460:16:49

and hopefully get as far as you need to go.

0:16:490:16:51

This course is a gruelling test for everyone,

0:16:510:16:55

including Britain's top downhill racer

0:16:550:16:57

and world number one, Rachel Atherton.

0:16:570:17:00

Really is one of the hardest tracks of the year.

0:17:000:17:02

You're absolutely on the limit.

0:17:020:17:04

At the National a few weeks ago,

0:17:040:17:06

I almost was fainting on the lips of every jump

0:17:060:17:09

because, you know, putting that much effort in,

0:17:090:17:11

you're emptying yourself completely, and I could feel it closing in,

0:17:110:17:15

and I was like, "I can't faint."

0:17:150:17:18

As well as that, your arms and your legs are pumped up,

0:17:180:17:21

and the adrenaline is so physical,

0:17:210:17:22

and the girls, we're a lot less strong than the guys, you know,

0:17:220:17:26

so for us it's much harder.

0:17:260:17:28

Which makes us better riders!

0:17:280:17:29

SHE LAUGHS

0:17:290:17:30

Someone who's doing exceptionally well this year

0:17:300:17:33

is Australian rider Tracey Hannah.

0:17:330:17:35

She's a real contender for one of the top spots.

0:17:350:17:38

But a few years ago, she had to work in a mine to finance her riding.

0:17:380:17:43

They mine for titanium,

0:17:430:17:45

and you know, really fine sand that you put in paint or toothpaste,

0:17:450:17:49

you know, everything.

0:17:490:17:51

It's actually crazy what we mined out of that mine.

0:17:510:17:54

But the main one was titanium.

0:17:540:17:55

The fact that I was one of the first girls to work in that mine,

0:17:560:18:00

the guys were pretty hard on me.

0:18:000:18:02

They were a bit mean, and they weren't, you know...

0:18:020:18:04

They were back in the old days where girls can't do this or that,

0:18:040:18:07

so that was pretty tough and definitely gave me thick skin,

0:18:070:18:10

which helps in this industry, because it's good to be strong

0:18:100:18:14

and know who you are and be confident in yourself.

0:18:140:18:17

So let's see how these women do today,

0:18:180:18:19

and we're joining the action with a former 4X specialist

0:18:190:18:23

who's now focusing on downhill.

0:18:230:18:25

On the course now, Britain's Katy Curd.

0:18:260:18:28

Came 15th in Lourdes and 12th in Cairns, Australia

0:18:280:18:32

earlier on this year.

0:18:320:18:34

She first started at the age of 17 in 2006,

0:18:340:18:38

and she is one of the great British hopes.

0:18:380:18:41

One of the most aggressive riders we've seen so far today.

0:18:420:18:46

She's up there in the top ten consistently.

0:18:460:18:48

That's a very difficult corner.

0:18:490:18:51

It pushes you out over the void.

0:18:510:18:53

Quite intimidating to come down these first few drop-offs.

0:18:530:18:56

She is flying here.

0:18:560:18:58

That's a very strong line.

0:19:000:19:01

I think she should be in contention for a podium with this.

0:19:010:19:05

Katy Curd, she is flying.

0:19:060:19:09

What is going on here?

0:19:090:19:10

Oh, she's going in big style!

0:19:100:19:14

Going over the jumps.

0:19:140:19:15

Yes! Listen to this noise as Katy Curd comes flying down.

0:19:150:19:19

She's our new leader by a country mile.

0:19:190:19:22

If she gets a podium here, this will be absolutely fantastic.

0:19:230:19:26

14th in the world. Listen to the noise!

0:19:260:19:29

Oh, my goodness.

0:19:300:19:31

13 seconds inside.

0:19:310:19:34

Wow, wow, wow.

0:19:340:19:36

She could well be on the podium with that performance.

0:19:360:19:39

Back at the top of the mountain, next up is Morgane Charre.

0:19:410:19:44

Morgane Charre from France has been chasing an elusive podium place

0:19:460:19:51

for quite a few years now.

0:19:510:19:53

Hasn't won a downhill race in the last two years.

0:19:530:19:57

This is not her favourite course.

0:19:580:19:59

Her favourite course, in Leogang in Austria,

0:19:590:20:02

is a much shorter, steeper, rockier course.

0:20:020:20:06

But here on the rocks of Fort William, it could be her day.

0:20:060:20:09

Ranked fifth in the world.

0:20:090:20:10

Looks solid, very strong

0:20:120:20:14

on the upper part of the course.

0:20:140:20:16

And looking pretty smooth - carrying a lot of speed,

0:20:190:20:22

not doing much braking on this upper part.

0:20:220:20:24

Not doing much peddling either, though.

0:20:240:20:26

Trying to preserve her energy.

0:20:260:20:28

Oh, that was a little nasty kick there,

0:20:280:20:31

got a twist in the handlebars that just put her off line there.

0:20:310:20:34

Morgane Charre from France

0:20:350:20:37

disappears from our view and into the forest.

0:20:370:20:40

Morgane Charre going through the woods there,

0:20:420:20:45

and she just has her foot down all the time.

0:20:450:20:47

Dabbing her way down. It's horrible in there.

0:20:470:20:49

Absolutely horrible.

0:20:490:20:51

Has the talent to win, there's no doubt about it,

0:20:520:20:54

but the woods just caught her out.

0:20:540:20:56

I wonder if Katy Curd is going to do better than many expect.

0:20:570:21:03

Because those woods are becoming very, very, very exposed.

0:21:040:21:09

The roots are exposed.

0:21:090:21:10

It all depends what the girls are thinking.

0:21:100:21:13

Do they fly through the last section?

0:21:130:21:15

But Morgane Charre has made up nearly a second now.

0:21:150:21:18

Hold on a second.

0:21:180:21:19

We thought maybe that Morgane was out of this,

0:21:210:21:23

but she has put on an unbelievable performance

0:21:230:21:26

in the bottom half of this course.

0:21:260:21:28

My goodness, she could be knocking Katy Curd

0:21:280:21:30

off the top of the podium here

0:21:300:21:32

with this unbelievable performance on the second half of the course.

0:21:320:21:35

Really struggled through the woods,

0:21:350:21:37

but she said she had a big winter, put the effort in.

0:21:370:21:40

Second!

0:21:410:21:43

Two seconds out.

0:21:430:21:45

Wow.

0:21:450:21:46

On the course now is the Australian national champion, Tracey Hannah,

0:21:490:21:54

who came second in her home race in Cairns

0:21:540:21:57

and first in the national championships in March last year.

0:21:570:22:00

Came third here in 2014.

0:22:000:22:03

And it looks like she's in for a good chance.

0:22:050:22:07

She is fit.

0:22:070:22:08

And strong. Very motivated after two very good top-five positions at the

0:22:090:22:14

early part of the year.

0:22:140:22:15

Loves the dry track.

0:22:160:22:18

Thinks it's an advantage to her today.

0:22:180:22:20

Because it's dry and dusty.

0:22:200:22:22

And absolutely flying here.

0:22:220:22:23

Not taking any speed off in the top rocky section.

0:22:230:22:26

Tracey really moving.

0:22:270:22:28

And very important for her if she's going to win today to keep out of

0:22:300:22:34

the grit on the inside of these berms.

0:22:340:22:36

Looking very strong.

0:22:380:22:39

And there is a long rock slab that takes you down into the forest here

0:22:420:22:46

as Tracey is absolutely flying in the upper part of the course.

0:22:460:22:49

Really accelerated now.

0:22:490:22:50

She's flying into the woods.

0:22:500:22:52

Tracey Hannah going tentatively, very tentatively indeed,

0:22:530:22:57

going through the woods, but my goodness me,

0:22:570:23:03

she must have been absolutely flying through the top section of this course.

0:23:030:23:08

Ten seconds inside.

0:23:080:23:10

Look at that. Look at the way she rides those berms.

0:23:110:23:15

That is the way to do it.

0:23:150:23:17

Elbows out, pedalling when she has to,

0:23:170:23:19

she is pumping through the handlebars as well.

0:23:190:23:23

Oh, look at that. She is just getting a little bit out of shape,

0:23:250:23:29

but you notice how she gets her head down, pushes the wind out of the way.

0:23:290:23:33

Oh, my goodness me.

0:23:330:23:35

Oh, my goodness me.

0:23:350:23:37

Tracey Hannah

0:23:370:23:39

is flying through this.

0:23:390:23:42

Different class, different class from Katy Curd in this run.

0:23:420:23:46

She's absorbing all these jumps and she is coming through.

0:23:460:23:51

She flew that for miles over that junction.

0:23:510:23:55

Here is the Aussie, Tracey Hannah,

0:23:550:23:58

showing the rest of the field how it's done.

0:23:580:24:00

This is our new leader.

0:24:010:24:02

What? 17.756 seconds ahead of Katy Curd.

0:24:030:24:09

Wow, wow, wow.

0:24:090:24:10

Only Manon Carpenter and Rachel Atherton left to come.

0:24:100:24:15

Is Tracey Hannah our new champion?

0:24:150:24:18

On the course now, Rachel Atherton,

0:24:220:24:24

who has been unbeaten in World Cup and downhill events since April 2015.

0:24:240:24:29

Incredible run of firsts.

0:24:290:24:31

First in Cairns this year, first in Lourdes.

0:24:310:24:33

Rachel is the darling of women's British mountain biking.

0:24:330:24:37

And chasing Manon Carpenter,

0:24:380:24:39

who was four seconds ahead of her in qualification.

0:24:390:24:43

Rachel has every chance here.

0:24:430:24:44

She has here every year.

0:24:440:24:45

So impressive. Part of the great Atherton dynasty of mountain biking and

0:24:460:24:52

absolutely flying.

0:24:520:24:53

She is in a class of her own.

0:24:540:24:56

Manon and Rachel are really something special for women's downhilling.

0:24:560:25:01

Flying the British flag as ever.

0:25:010:25:02

Loves the Fort William course and has said that it is so physically

0:25:040:25:09

difficult that it is pain through the arms and the lower part of the section into

0:25:090:25:13

the jumps.

0:25:130:25:14

Totally dedicated athlete,

0:25:160:25:18

continuing, hopefully, her domination of women's racing,

0:25:180:25:22

as Rachel kicks up onto the slab and heads down into the forest.

0:25:220:25:27

Here we go. Rachel Atherton, World Cup champion, World Champion,

0:25:280:25:33

she is looking for her ninth consecutive win in World Cup.

0:25:330:25:38

And that would just be unbelievable.

0:25:380:25:40

And she is bossing this course.

0:25:400:25:44

She doesn't know she's ahead of Tracey,

0:25:440:25:46

but she will when she approaches the archway and this Fort William crowd

0:25:460:25:50

suck her down into the arena and into the finish and into the hot seat.

0:25:500:25:55

Because that is where she's going to be.

0:25:550:25:56

Oh, my goodness me.

0:25:580:25:59

13 seconds up.

0:25:590:26:01

She will hear that noise.

0:26:010:26:03

She will hear that crowd in a few seconds.

0:26:030:26:05

She will see them.

0:26:050:26:07

As she approaches the Scotland arch.

0:26:070:26:09

She is such an incredible racer.

0:26:100:26:12

This will be an equal record of nine consecutive wins,

0:26:150:26:18

set by Anne-Caroline Chausson a long, long time ago,

0:26:180:26:23

if she wins this. Manon Carpenter

0:26:230:26:25

still to come but Rachel Atherton, hello,

0:26:250:26:29

12 and a half seconds inside Tracey Hannah.

0:26:290:26:33

Number one on the bike.

0:26:330:26:36

Will she be one at the end of play?

0:26:360:26:39

Manon Carpenter will have to be sensational to beat that.

0:26:390:26:43

On the course now, a girl who's been snapping at the heels of Rachel

0:26:450:26:49

Atherton for the last couple of years.

0:26:490:26:50

Manon Carpenter, third this year in Cairns and third in Lourdes in France.

0:26:500:26:55

Actually qualified faster than Rachel today.

0:26:560:26:58

And continuing that fantastic heritage started by Tracy Moseley,

0:26:590:27:03

Rachel Atherton, and hopefully now Manon Carpenter as the best downhillers

0:27:030:27:08

in the world. Total dedication.

0:27:080:27:11

And a fast line there.

0:27:110:27:12

Manon looking really quick, very aggressive.

0:27:120:27:16

Very unfazed by this course.

0:27:190:27:21

And you can see, she has the strength to pick the bike up,

0:27:230:27:26

keep it out of the ruts and the bumps to make it fly down the course.

0:27:260:27:30

And Manon is a strong sprinter, like Rachel,

0:27:300:27:33

so sprinting along the bottom part of the course will win the race for

0:27:330:27:36

these two. And Manon is negotiating these berms incredibly well.

0:27:360:27:42

Nice, fluid line and a quick step up onto the rock slab.

0:27:420:27:46

And down into the forest Manon goes to chase a podium position.

0:27:460:27:50

Manon Carpenter, 23 years old, is a brilliant rider.

0:27:500:27:55

She is our fastest qualifier and she is the World Cup leader,

0:27:550:27:58

but she's nine seconds down, but this is still a great ride.

0:27:580:28:03

Let's not take it away from her.

0:28:030:28:04

This is still a brilliant ride by Manon Carpenter.

0:28:040:28:07

She's very... Oh, she's off.

0:28:070:28:10

Oh, my goodness. That's a mistake, oh, and a really weird place to fall.

0:28:100:28:14

What was going on there?

0:28:140:28:15

Oh, she just... Oh, goodness me.

0:28:180:28:20

That is heartbreaking.

0:28:200:28:22

But Manon is not going to give up. You can be absolutely sure of it.

0:28:220:28:25

She's still in third place.

0:28:270:28:29

This is unbelievable from Manon Carpenter.

0:28:290:28:31

Absolutely unbelievable.

0:28:310:28:33

She was chewing the Fort William dirt just a couple of seconds ago.

0:28:330:28:37

Now she's got herself back on the bike.

0:28:370:28:39

Last year, she flew over this and crashed.

0:28:390:28:42

She's over safely, thank goodness.

0:28:420:28:44

And she's still... But she will be furious with herself,

0:28:460:28:50

the Welsh girl. Such a talent.

0:28:500:28:52

She'll still be on the podium, even though she's fallen.

0:28:520:28:55

But Rachel Atherton is our champion 2016.

0:28:550:28:59

All smiles, thumbs up and well deserved.

0:29:000:29:03

What a brilliant, brilliant athlete.

0:29:030:29:08

So confirmation of those final results and it's two Brits on the podium.

0:29:080:29:12

Despite her crash,

0:29:120:29:14

Manon Carpenter came in third in a

0:29:140:29:17

time of 5 minutes 32.11 seconds.

0:29:170:29:19

In second place was Australian rider

0:29:190:29:21

Tracey Hannah

0:29:210:29:22

in 5.23.27.

0:29:220:29:25

But with a time of 5.11.22,

0:29:250:29:27

Rachel Atherton dominated

0:29:270:29:29

the race today.

0:29:290:29:30

Rachel, champion on your home World Cup once again.

0:29:310:29:34

Absolutely fantastic stuff.

0:29:340:29:35

I had a pretty wild run.

0:29:350:29:37

I nearly crashed so many places.

0:29:370:29:39

My back end was sliding out.

0:29:390:29:40

Normally I'm completely in control,

0:29:400:29:42

but Fort William seems to bring something out in

0:29:420:29:44

me where you know you're on the edge, you're like, "Go, go, go."

0:29:440:29:47

I think it might be all the people shouting your name, like, "Go, go, go."

0:29:470:29:50

You're going round a corner and their shouting, "Pedal" and you're

0:29:500:29:53

like, "Oh, my God, I can't pedal".

0:29:530:29:55

And you've equalled nine consecutive wins.

0:29:550:29:57

You've equalled the record of 16 years ago and that's amazing.

0:29:570:30:00

-Is that the record, nine?

-Yeah, yeah, yeah.

0:30:000:30:03

Yeah, the French girl, Anne-Caroline Chausson,

0:30:030:30:06

she's got the record, world championships, and Olympic gold medallist and,

0:30:060:30:10

you know, she's like on a pedestal.

0:30:100:30:12

All us girls are inspired by her and if I can inspire a few girls like

0:30:120:30:17

she's inspired me, then that's awesome, yeah.

0:30:170:30:19

Really cool.

0:30:190:30:20

Well, there really is no place to hide on this Fort William course,

0:30:200:30:23

but Rachel Atherton just gave a masterclass on how to absolutely storm it.

0:30:230:30:28

Congratulations to her.

0:30:280:30:29

Men's downhill coming up,

0:30:290:30:30

but right now I'm preparing for a challenge that's going to push me to my limits.

0:30:300:30:35

In fact,

0:30:350:30:36

it's going to push me way beyond my limits and the training, frankly, is not

0:30:360:30:41

going very easily.

0:30:410:30:43

Here we go again. You know, over the past decade,

0:30:520:30:54

I reckon I've done my bit for The Adventure Show.

0:30:540:30:57

'I've paddled through 70 Wild Miles...'

0:30:570:30:59

Do you have a bar on that thing?

0:30:590:31:01

-Yes.

-Gin and tonic, please.

0:31:010:31:03

'..taken part in the Strathpuffer 24 Hour Mountain Bike race to varying'

0:31:030:31:06

degrees of success, and puffed my way through the 300km Snow Roads Audax.

0:31:060:31:12

That was hard.

0:31:120:31:14

That was the toughest thing I've ever done.

0:31:140:31:16

-In your life?

-By a country mile.

0:31:160:31:18

Oh, God. 'No wonder it's taken four years for me to work up the courage

0:31:180:31:23

'for another challenge.

0:31:230:31:25

'This time, I've taken on the Braveheart Triathlon that's coming up in

0:31:250:31:28

'September. It's over 70 miles altogether

0:31:280:31:32

'with swimming, cycling, and the small matter of running up and down Ben Nevis.

0:31:320:31:38

'So I've enlisted the help of hardened triathlon racer Sean McFarlane.

0:31:380:31:43

'He competed in this event last year and came in third.'

0:31:430:31:46

So, Sean, could you lift me up and down Ben Nevis?

0:31:470:31:49

-That'll probably help me.

-Well, there is compulsory kit in this race,

0:31:490:31:52

-but sadly that doesn't include you. So I can't carry you up.

-OK.

0:31:520:31:55

-Shall we go for a run then?

-Yeah.

0:31:550:31:57

Good, good. Sean, tell me about your experiences on this race.

0:31:570:32:01

Where do I start? The swim was cold, but it was OK.

0:32:010:32:05

The bikes, quite flat, actually.

0:32:050:32:07

Not too bad.

0:32:070:32:08

But obviously, the run is something else,

0:32:080:32:11

up Ben Nevis. That was the bit I struggled on the most.

0:32:110:32:14

You got a serious problem.

0:32:140:32:15

You ended up feeling a bit ill as a result of the challenge.

0:32:150:32:17

I got a migraine coming off the top and ended up in hospital.

0:32:170:32:21

I messed up my hydration, even though it was quite a cold day,

0:32:210:32:24

and I'm meant to know about these things.

0:32:240:32:26

And in the hospital, I met the guy that won, as well.

0:32:260:32:28

So it was interesting.

0:32:280:32:29

So you both ended up in hospital?

0:32:290:32:31

-Should I book a space?

-Perhaps, perhaps.

0:32:310:32:33

-Hopefully not.

-Hopefully not.

0:32:330:32:36

'If I was in any doubt before, not any longer.

0:32:360:32:39

'This is going to be a tough race.'

0:32:390:32:42

-Oh, dear.

-Come on, Dougie, you can do this.

0:32:420:32:44

'So how will I cope going up Britain's highest mountain at the end of an

0:32:440:32:48

'already very, very long day?'

0:32:480:32:52

The one thing that we are doing which I think is important,

0:32:520:32:54

a lot of people get put of the idea of hill running because they think

0:32:540:32:57

-they've got to run on hills all the time.

-Uh-huh.

0:32:570:33:00

-We are jogging fairly slowly, still moving forward...

-Fairly slowly, you said?

0:33:000:33:04

..and we're walking bits as well.

0:33:040:33:06

You know the amazing thing? He's chatting.

0:33:070:33:10

I'm struggling to breathe. Oh, dear.

0:33:110:33:14

I think you've got to break it up into manageable chunks,

0:33:150:33:18

just take the next little small bit at a time.

0:33:180:33:22

Try not to look too far ahead.

0:33:220:33:24

And just enjoy it and think of it as a slightly quicker walk than usual.

0:33:240:33:28

There's very little to be gained in trying to run this,

0:33:300:33:33

because you can burn so many calories

0:33:330:33:35

in such a short space of time, so walk like this.

0:33:350:33:38

The more advanced people will begin to walk like this and speed up a

0:33:380:33:42

-little bit, as we're doing now.

-Yeah.

0:33:420:33:44

Do that. And to be honest with you,

0:33:440:33:46

I certainly can't actually run uphill that much faster than this.

0:33:460:33:51

So just tell me about the different disciplines and how you obviously

0:33:530:33:56

physically and mentally prepare for something like that,

0:33:560:33:59

because at the end of a very long day swimming and cycling, for me,

0:33:590:34:02

then the prospect of running up Ben Nevis is fairly daunting.

0:34:020:34:06

A triathlon is perfect in the sense that you can actually break it up

0:34:060:34:09

into three races. Just a big day out, essentially.

0:34:090:34:12

I would caution against calling it a race as such.

0:34:120:34:15

It's really just about if you keep on going forward and enjoying yourself

0:34:150:34:18

as well. That's the most important thing.

0:34:180:34:20

Like a gazelle there.

0:34:200:34:22

When you go in for an event, you're going in to win,

0:34:240:34:26

for me it's all about surviving and getting through it,

0:34:260:34:28

and there will be times where I'm at the back of the swim, maybe at the back of the cycle,

0:34:280:34:32

maybe at the back of the run. How do you suggest I keep that going mentally?

0:34:320:34:35

You might not be at the back of the field. But this year, because Ben Nevis is up and down,

0:34:350:34:39

as I was coming down, I saw the back markers, and you know what?

0:34:390:34:42

They were so much happier than everyone at the front.

0:34:420:34:44

And I can see you fitting into that,

0:34:440:34:46

if you're in that position. It might be you're higher up than that.

0:34:460:34:49

But if you are at the back quarter, it's an environment which you will enjoy.

0:34:490:34:53

The other thing about hill running as well, we are, what,

0:34:530:34:56

ten minutes' drive from the centre of Stirling?

0:34:560:34:59

-And look at this.

-I know.

0:34:590:35:01

And there's nobody here. This is great.

0:35:010:35:03

-There's the Forth Valley.

-A good excuse to stop here.

0:35:030:35:06

If I come onto the hill, I do have a tendency just to do that.

0:35:060:35:10

But I guess the big thing about being on a hill is you're on a hill.

0:35:100:35:14

-Absolutely.

-And it's all there in front of you.

0:35:140:35:16

Forget about that bit, which is the up bit.

0:35:160:35:18

All this is fantastic.

0:35:180:35:19

See that? It's just a wee excuse for stopping there.

0:35:200:35:23

Come on. Come on, let's go.

0:35:230:35:24

Whoa. Easy now.

0:35:270:35:29

'I'm worn out already, and Sean's only just warming up.

0:35:290:35:32

'I'd better keep on training.

0:35:320:35:35

'Hard.'

0:35:350:35:36

Welcome back to Fort William, where we're watching the men challenge

0:35:440:35:47

this fiendishly difficult course. But before that,

0:35:470:35:50

we couldn't resist celebrating one of the greatest downhill

0:35:500:35:53

mountain bikers in British mountain-biking history.

0:35:530:35:55

Rower Steve Redgrave, runner Paula Radcliffe,

0:35:560:35:59

and tennis player Andy Murray.

0:35:590:36:01

British stars that have defined their sport.

0:36:010:36:04

In the world of downhill mountain biking,

0:36:040:36:07

this crown belongs to former world champion

0:36:070:36:09

and three-times World Cup winner Steve Peat.

0:36:090:36:13

Here he comes. Inside four minutes,

0:36:130:36:15

sweeping down over the bottom section.

0:36:150:36:18

Listen to the roar of the crowd here.

0:36:180:36:21

Everyone is going absolutely wild.

0:36:210:36:23

He is in.

0:36:230:36:24

Steve Peat has won his first-ever event at Fort William.

0:36:240:36:27

4.11.44. Hands in the air. And listen to the roar of the crowd.

0:36:270:36:32

Now, after 20 years competing at the very top of the sport,

0:36:330:36:37

Steve has announced his retirement from professional racing.

0:36:370:36:40

We caught up with him just outside his home city of Sheffield.

0:36:400:36:44

I've been racing World Cup now for,

0:36:440:36:48

this is my 23rd season, so yeah, I've been doing it a while.

0:36:480:36:53

'I think for me racing at World Cup is obviously the creme de la creme,

0:36:530:36:57

'the Formula 1 of mountain biking.

0:36:570:37:00

'And downhill gets harder and harder to train for.

0:37:000:37:04

'To be at the top level against the young guys...'

0:37:040:37:06

Come on!

0:37:060:37:09

'I'm doing it my way. I want to take the whole year

0:37:090:37:11

'and let everybody know that it is going to be my last season,

0:37:110:37:14

'have a couple of parties along the way and have a bit of fun and just

0:37:140:37:18

'do it in my own sort of style.'

0:37:180:37:19

I don't want to get to the last race of the season, stand on the podium,

0:37:190:37:22

and just tell everybody, "That's it. I'm done. I'm finished."

0:37:220:37:25

I want it to be a year to celebrate, really,

0:37:250:37:28

what I've done in the sport and give something back to all the fans.

0:37:280:37:32

Steve Peat has been instrumental in shaping the mountain bike scene

0:37:330:37:37

in this country, particularly in promoting the sport to youngsters

0:37:370:37:41

and guiding fresh talent onto the World Cup circuit.

0:37:410:37:45

Here in Sheffield, he's founded the Steel City race,

0:37:450:37:48

a mini downhill to help promote the sport.

0:37:480:37:51

'Sheffield's always been a great spot for mountain biking.

0:37:510:37:54

'It's built on seven hills, so there's plenty of stuff to go at.

0:37:540:37:57

'We've just got a really good scene.

0:37:570:37:59

'Everybody gets together and works together to acquire funding,

0:37:590:38:03

'to build new trails, and we're constantly pushing.'

0:38:030:38:06

'This forest that we're in now, Grenoside Woods,'

0:38:090:38:12

is owned by Sheffield Wildlife Trust and they work with us

0:38:120:38:15

really well on mixed-use in this forest,

0:38:150:38:18

so when we do the Steel City downhill race,

0:38:180:38:21

which is in this forest, we put all the funds

0:38:210:38:23

back into maintaining trails and making new trails in the wood

0:38:230:38:27

'and also mixed-use in the wood.'

0:38:270:38:29

Steve's base may be Sheffield,

0:38:300:38:32

but like everyone on the World Cup circuit, each year

0:38:320:38:35

he makes the pilgrimage up to Fort William.

0:38:350:38:38

It's a race that is never far from Peaty's thoughts.

0:38:380:38:41

'I'm constantly thinking about the Fort William track.

0:38:420:38:45

'I raced there a couple of weeks ago.

0:38:450:38:47

'I catch myself watching TV,'

0:38:470:38:49

thinking about some corners on the track

0:38:490:38:52

or, "I wonder if you could cut that corner a little bit,

0:38:520:38:54

"make that a little bit tighter, shave a few seconds there."

0:38:540:38:57

You've got to know every root, every rock, every tree,

0:38:570:39:00

know where you're going to brake,

0:39:000:39:02

know where you're going to change gear,

0:39:020:39:05

just be 100% focused for a five-minute run.

0:39:050:39:07

It's a constant thing when you're at this level of the sport.

0:39:070:39:10

CHEERING

0:39:100:39:12

'2005, when I actually won in Fort William,

0:39:140:39:17

'I could hear the fans shouting all the way down

0:39:170:39:20

'and they willed me down that hill

0:39:200:39:21

'and when I came into the finish area,

0:39:210:39:23

'the actual noise and the boom of the place,

0:39:230:39:28

'I've never experienced anything like it before.

0:39:280:39:30

'Or since. And it was really emotional for me there.'

0:39:300:39:34

I didn't know what to do with myself when I came into that finish area

0:39:340:39:37

and I knew I'd actually won the race. It was pretty special.

0:39:370:39:39

Well, the fans here at Fort William are waiting to welcome Peaty

0:39:430:39:46

down here for the last time in a World Cup, but this year,

0:39:460:39:50

the event is tinged with sadness,

0:39:500:39:52

as the mountain bike world lost one of its top stars, Stevie Smith.

0:39:520:39:56

World Cup winner in 2013,

0:39:560:39:58

Stevie lost his life whilst riding his motorcycle

0:39:580:40:01

in his hometown in Canada back in May earlier this year.

0:40:010:40:05

Stevie Smith was amazing.

0:40:070:40:10

I think he single-handedly

0:40:100:40:11

brought Canadian downhilling back on the map.

0:40:110:40:13

Yeah. Just such a sad loss.

0:40:150:40:17

Me and Stevie were the same age, so we raced together in juniors

0:40:190:40:22

and it was awesome to watch his career flourish

0:40:220:40:25

and go from being like a junior who could never stay on

0:40:250:40:27

to one of the...to the best in the world in 2013.

0:40:270:40:30

He was one of the legends of the sport and I think this race is

0:40:300:40:34

'a celebration of him and what he accomplished

0:40:340:40:36

'and what he brought to the sport.'

0:40:360:40:38

This is the first World Cup since that accident.

0:40:390:40:43

And everyone here feels the big hole

0:40:430:40:46

that has been left in the men's event.

0:40:460:40:48

Back up on the hill for today's race, conditions are great.

0:40:510:40:54

It's such a pleasure being here in good weather.

0:40:540:40:56

Last year, this was torrential rain, horizontal snow, absolutely awful,

0:40:560:41:00

but now the weather is fantastic.

0:41:000:41:01

But it does bring other challenges for the riders.

0:41:010:41:04

The track is extremely loose

0:41:040:41:06

and it's very difficult to hold the line on the gravel.

0:41:060:41:09

The track gets faster and faster so of the riders are starting

0:41:090:41:13

to chop it up more, so new holes are coming through

0:41:130:41:15

so you kind of find new lines are a bit smoother,

0:41:150:41:18

they last for a few runs and then they change,

0:41:180:41:20

and you have to really pay attention to that

0:41:200:41:22

and make sure you're on top of it

0:41:220:41:24

and really ride in the fastest line that is there.

0:41:240:41:26

Today, Gee Atherton is the foremost British rider

0:41:260:41:29

and has dominated the sport for years.

0:41:290:41:32

But the qualifying round threw up some major surprises.

0:41:320:41:35

Adam Brayton from Keswick normally manages to make it into the top 50.

0:41:350:41:40

Today, he qualified fifth fastest.

0:41:400:41:43

He is the man.

0:41:430:41:45

'It's easy to get'

0:41:450:41:46

caught up in the crowd here and get a bit wild on the track.

0:41:460:41:49

Yeah, the crowd was that good.

0:41:490:41:51

Just kept pushing and kept clicking sections off that are tricky

0:41:510:41:55

and, yeah, just pushed hard and no mistakes and ended up fifth.

0:41:550:41:59

I was blown away.

0:41:590:42:00

Really shocked.

0:42:000:42:02

Another amazing qualifying result came from a young Scottish rider

0:42:020:42:05

from Selkirk, George Gannicott.

0:42:050:42:07

He finished tenth fastest.

0:42:070:42:10

Really pleased with that. I don't know how to put it into words.

0:42:100:42:12

I came across the line, a couple of rides

0:42:120:42:14

I got quite close to it. My time didn't come up instantly,

0:42:140:42:17

I was waiting for about five or ten seconds

0:42:170:42:19

and then popped up tenth - "Nah, can't be right."

0:42:190:42:22

It's a big difference from riding in Innerleithen

0:42:220:42:24

when you're being watched by maybe 20 or 30 riders

0:42:240:42:27

-to here where it's 10,000.

-It's a surreal feeling.

0:42:270:42:29

You can't explain the feeling that you get

0:42:290:42:32

when you're coming down the finish line

0:42:320:42:33

and there's thousands and thousands of people

0:42:330:42:36

all cheering just for you. It's incredible.

0:42:360:42:38

The highest-ranking Scot is Greg Williamson from Inverness.

0:42:380:42:41

Currently placed 11th in the world,

0:42:410:42:43

he was seventh fastest in qualification.

0:42:430:42:46

And knows it's all down to split-second timing.

0:42:460:42:50

To have a run winning here,

0:42:500:42:51

you've just got to be on the limit, really.

0:42:510:42:54

And just ride comfortably, but ride just a bit over the limit,

0:42:540:43:00

so if you don't do that, then you most likely won't win.

0:43:000:43:03

It's just so fast just now, and dusty for once.

0:43:030:43:07

And there's certainly no shortage of competition.

0:43:080:43:11

Last year's winner, South African rider, Greg Minnaar,

0:43:110:43:14

knows this course as well as any Brit.

0:43:140:43:17

I've been coming back here since 2002

0:43:170:43:19

and it's always great coming back

0:43:190:43:22

because I always feel like this is my home race away from home.

0:43:220:43:24

I grew up racing in the UK and all the guys that I grew up racing with

0:43:240:43:29

come through in support, so it's a good race for me.

0:43:290:43:31

Do you ride the course differently now?

0:43:310:43:33

I know it's changed over the years,

0:43:330:43:34

but do you ride it differently from when you were a younger guy?

0:43:340:43:37

-I'm still young, aren't I?

-You're clearly a young guy

0:43:370:43:39

but you were obviously a wee bit younger...

0:43:390:43:42

You know, I try and maintain that same pace up top, you know.

0:43:420:43:46

The whole top section is about carrying speed

0:43:460:43:48

so sometimes you want to just brake and be a little bit safe

0:43:480:43:50

and you just don't have that opportunity,

0:43:500:43:52

so I feel I am still riding like a young gun.

0:43:520:43:56

We're picking up the action as Greg's team-mate,

0:43:560:43:59

the legendary British rider Steve Peat,

0:43:590:44:01

starts down this course for his last World Cup race at Fort William.

0:44:010:44:06

This is history in the making.

0:44:060:44:08

UCI Downhill World Champion 2009, nine-times UK Champion,

0:44:090:44:14

twice European Champion, with over 17 World Cup wins,

0:44:140:44:18

he will get a fantastic, fantastic reception here.

0:44:180:44:22

Peaty is flying down the hill.

0:44:220:44:25

That is an amazing, amazing man, with an incredible downhill career.

0:44:250:44:29

It's very, very hard and that little drop off the line

0:44:290:44:33

has to be absolutely spot on.

0:44:330:44:36

So here he is, Steve Peat.

0:44:360:44:39

He won here in 2005.

0:44:390:44:41

First year that The Adventure Show came to Fort William.

0:44:410:44:47

Listen to the noise.

0:44:470:44:50

He is putting the style on.

0:44:500:44:52

And PT comes through the archway.

0:44:520:44:54

Listen to the welcome.

0:44:540:44:56

CHEERING

0:44:560:45:00

What a noise.

0:45:010:45:02

Here he comes. His last ever World Cup in Fort William

0:45:050:45:08

and I think there could be some tears under that visor.

0:45:080:45:13

Get that visor up, Peaty.

0:45:130:45:15

Everyone's wearing the Peaty masks. Fantastic.

0:45:150:45:19

So while Peaty soaks in the crowds, back at the top of the mountain,

0:45:200:45:24

it's business as usual for his team-mate, Greg Minnaar.

0:45:240:45:28

The South African giant that is Greg Minnaar, winner here last year,

0:45:280:45:33

started racing at the age of 17 in 1999,

0:45:330:45:37

had an incredible set of wins at the very, very highest level.

0:45:370:45:42

Struggled earlier on this year to match his form

0:45:420:45:46

that he made here last year.

0:45:460:45:48

But Greg is one of the senior riders, 35.

0:45:480:45:52

Respected. A hugely strong rider.

0:45:520:45:55

Incredibly skilled.

0:45:550:45:57

Hoping to repeat his success here last year.

0:45:580:46:02

And Greg looking pretty solid.

0:46:020:46:04

And his strength is his huge power in the lower part of the course,

0:46:060:46:10

and very, very good in the air.

0:46:100:46:11

So here is Greg Minnaar. He's won in Fort William five times.

0:46:130:46:18

No-one else has ever done that.

0:46:180:46:20

Minnaar's on the hunt. Six and a half seconds up.

0:46:200:46:24

And he's absolutely flying down here.

0:46:240:46:28

They love him here at Fort William, the way he attacks the course.

0:46:280:46:31

I spoke to him earlier today,

0:46:310:46:34

and he said he loves the fact that the course is riding fast,

0:46:340:46:37

because when the course is riding fast, he rides fast.

0:46:370:46:41

Thirion is in the lead at the moment.

0:46:410:46:44

Greg Minnaar is going to smash him off the top spot.

0:46:440:46:48

Here is Greg Minnaar throwing down the gauntlet.

0:46:490:46:52

Every single yard he has timed

0:46:520:46:56

and he is absolutely playing a master card here at Fort William.

0:46:560:47:02

Here he goes.

0:47:020:47:04

And some style into the bargain.

0:47:050:47:08

Forget that, Greg.

0:47:080:47:09

Get to the finish and get in the hot seat

0:47:090:47:12

and say to everyone else,

0:47:120:47:13

"Let's see what you can do,

0:47:130:47:15

"because this is what I can do

0:47:150:47:17

"and what I can do is amazing."

0:47:170:47:20

Almost eight seconds inside.

0:47:200:47:22

4:35.6.

0:47:220:47:24

Greg Minnaar is the boss and no mistake.

0:47:240:47:27

And already receiving a great welcome,

0:47:310:47:34

a fantastic favourite of the crowd here.

0:47:340:47:36

Danny Hart, the British downhill champion,

0:47:360:47:38

ranked seventh in the world this year.

0:47:380:47:42

Has been riding for a long time and still only 25.

0:47:420:47:44

Any of these riders could do well and he's really pushing it.

0:47:470:47:49

Such a danger of a flat on some of these upper parts

0:47:510:47:54

and he's just maybe trying too hard

0:47:540:47:56

but you might say that Danny is one of the best in the world.

0:47:560:48:00

He's come out of his pedal there.

0:48:010:48:03

Yeah, I thought he was going a little bit hard.

0:48:030:48:05

Back online now.

0:48:060:48:08

He needs to keep it out of the grit and gravel.

0:48:080:48:11

Try to cut the corners is not going to work today.

0:48:110:48:14

You've got to stay on the clean race line.

0:48:140:48:17

And Danny chasing Greg Minnaar,

0:48:170:48:20

who currently sits in first position.

0:48:200:48:22

The Rocket from Redcar has just blown the roof off Ben Nevis.

0:48:260:48:31

He's never had a win here at Fort William.

0:48:330:48:35

He would love to do it this year.

0:48:350:48:37

He's currently ranked seventh in the world rankings at the moment,

0:48:370:48:41

which is kind of low for him.

0:48:410:48:43

He loves to put on the style.

0:48:430:48:44

Let's look at this split.

0:48:440:48:46

Oh, he's two seconds down. Two seconds down.

0:48:470:48:51

And that's slightly disappointing,

0:48:510:48:54

but can he do anything at this point?

0:48:540:48:59

I reckon too much time in the air, there, for Danny Hart,

0:48:590:49:03

and he may have lost a little more down the way,

0:49:030:49:05

those end jumps.

0:49:050:49:07

Greg Minnaar was in great form.

0:49:070:49:11

Danny Hart just needs to get over the line,

0:49:110:49:13

get himself onto the podium for the moment

0:49:130:49:15

and see how everyone else does.

0:49:150:49:18

Second place. Almost four seconds outside Greg Minnaar.

0:49:180:49:22

That just shows you how incredible Greg Minnaar's run truly was.

0:49:220:49:25

Now we're into the last ten

0:49:270:49:28

with two great young riders flying the flag for Scotland.

0:49:280:49:32

George Gannicott from Selkirk in the Borders.

0:49:320:49:36

Incredibly pleased to be sitting in the top ten after qualification.

0:49:360:49:41

It would be an amazing thing

0:49:410:49:42

for George to get a position on the podium.

0:49:420:49:45

Very, very strong rider.

0:49:450:49:47

Go on, George.

0:49:470:49:48

He spends his winter working in a clothes shop,

0:49:500:49:53

says he knows nothing about fashion.

0:49:530:49:54

He certainly knows a lot about biking.

0:49:540:49:57

That is a pretty good line.

0:49:580:49:59

Loves Innerleithen in the Tweed Valley.

0:49:590:50:02

Looks pretty good so far.

0:50:020:50:03

Fashion to flyer, as George heads off down into the forest.

0:50:040:50:08

Down onto the motorway and George's time is slipping.

0:50:100:50:12

Has the pressure of expectation got him?

0:50:130:50:15

He's already over 12 seconds down on Greg Minnaar.

0:50:160:50:20

And there is no way he can make that up in the last part of the course.

0:50:200:50:24

Might be enough for a podium. It won't get him into the top ten,

0:50:240:50:26

but it's still been a fantastic weekend

0:50:260:50:28

for this young Scottish rider.

0:50:280:50:30

I reckon we will be seeing a lot more of him in the future.

0:50:300:50:33

On the course now,

0:50:380:50:40

having qualified seventh-fastest, is Greg Williamson from Inverness.

0:50:400:50:44

He'll surely get a fantastic welcome when he reaches the arena.

0:50:440:50:49

Had a crash in practice earlier on and hurt his shoulder

0:50:490:50:52

but it looks as though it's not hampering him at all now.

0:50:520:50:55

Knows the course, absolutely loves Fort William.

0:50:550:50:58

Rocky, big jumps, very, very strong.

0:50:580:51:01

So Greg is just up onto the rocks before descending into the trees.

0:51:030:51:08

Well, I tell you what,

0:51:090:51:10

Greg Williamson is picking up the pace.

0:51:100:51:13

Can he do something here at Fort William?

0:51:130:51:16

He already has done, let's face it.

0:51:160:51:18

Come on. He's in fourth place, Greg.

0:51:190:51:21

And the Scottish crowd will love Greg Williamson

0:51:210:51:24

and love what he is doing.

0:51:240:51:26

He's from the Highlands of Scotland.

0:51:260:51:28

The big fella is doing a Highland Fling.

0:51:280:51:30

Chooses the safer option

0:51:320:51:35

and Williamson has just got to head down,

0:51:350:51:38

get out of the wind, and just get down as quickly as he can.

0:51:380:51:42

What's he done?

0:51:420:51:43

Third place! No way!

0:51:430:51:45

That is unbelievable.

0:51:450:51:48

That is unbelievable from Greg Williamson.

0:51:480:51:52

He's in third now.

0:51:520:51:54

I know there are some really, really big guys still to come.

0:51:540:51:57

Adam Brayton, the British rider, based in Keswick.

0:52:000:52:04

Did really well here to qualify in fifth place.

0:52:040:52:08

Had an absolute blinder of a qualification ride.

0:52:080:52:11

His placings in World Cup so far,

0:52:110:52:13

he's been consistent in the top 50, but never really shined above that.

0:52:130:52:18

Come on, Adam. Pushing on.

0:52:190:52:23

Absolutely terrific in the top part of the course.

0:52:230:52:27

Giving his all.

0:52:270:52:28

Adam is flying on the top part.

0:52:280:52:30

Just slightly missed that line.

0:52:300:52:32

Being slightly too tight.

0:52:320:52:34

And you can see how difficult that is,

0:52:350:52:38

getting all off-line there.

0:52:380:52:40

You can see he lost a bit of power

0:52:400:52:41

in the elbows to hold the front wheel straight.

0:52:410:52:44

But pushing on. Let's hope he does well

0:52:440:52:46

as he jumps up onto the rocks and heads off into the forest.

0:52:460:52:49

Well, well, well. Adam Brayton has been doing some incredible stuff.

0:52:510:52:56

He's had an amazing weekend

0:52:570:53:00

and he could well be on the podium here, if he keeps it tight.

0:53:000:53:04

He is picking up and picking up and picking up all the time.

0:53:040:53:06

Let's see where he is. Let's see...

0:53:080:53:10

Split four - he is 1.4 down.

0:53:100:53:12

Oh, he's still in third.

0:53:170:53:18

3.1 down.

0:53:180:53:20

He's lost a bit of time on Greg Minnaar,

0:53:200:53:22

but he's still in third place.

0:53:220:53:25

And he's just going for it.

0:53:250:53:28

And that's what the Fort William crowd absolutely loves.

0:53:280:53:30

Gasps from start to finish.

0:53:310:53:33

Made lots of mistakes all the way through

0:53:340:53:36

but the reason he made mistakes was he was taking the risky options,

0:53:360:53:41

and it almost paid off.

0:53:410:53:43

What's he done now?

0:53:450:53:47

Into third place

0:53:470:53:49

for Adam Brayton.

0:53:490:53:51

That is a sensational ride.

0:53:510:53:53

Wow.

0:53:530:53:54

On the course now,

0:53:580:54:00

the current World Cup leader,

0:54:000:54:01

American Aaron Gwin,

0:54:010:54:02

who placed first in Lourdes in April.

0:54:020:54:06

Aaron has raced here many, many times.

0:54:060:54:09

Came second last year with an incredible performance

0:54:090:54:14

only to be pipped at the post -

0:54:140:54:16

Aaron Wareing, the number one on the bike.

0:54:160:54:19

He is truly flying on the top part of the course.

0:54:190:54:22

He's an extremely strong sprinter

0:54:220:54:24

and absolutely brilliant on the jumps.

0:54:240:54:27

Trying to keep a nice, smooth line, here, keep out of trouble.

0:54:270:54:32

He'll be sprinting hard in the next little section

0:54:330:54:36

on the rock slab, to take him down into the trees.

0:54:360:54:39

Aaron Gwin, got the American flag on his arm,

0:54:400:54:44

he's the national champion.

0:54:440:54:46

And he is great.

0:54:460:54:47

Look at that. He's absolutely flying.

0:54:470:54:50

He is behind Greg Minnaar

0:54:500:54:52

and he's not going to beat him.

0:54:520:54:54

But he puts some style on.

0:54:540:54:56

That's unbelievable.

0:54:570:54:59

Adam Brayton is sitting there

0:54:590:55:01

and Aaron Gwin is behind him on the time.

0:55:010:55:03

That shows you how good Brayton's ride truly was.

0:55:030:55:07

Here is Aaron Gwin.

0:55:070:55:08

Just really smooth.

0:55:090:55:10

He's still working the shoulders,

0:55:100:55:12

still working the suspension, getting nice and low.

0:55:120:55:15

Keeping it low, keeping it fast into the finish.

0:55:150:55:19

Will he get third?

0:55:190:55:21

He gets second. My goodness!

0:55:210:55:23

Aaron Quinn has just smashed the bottom half of the course.

0:55:230:55:28

Made up such a lot of time

0:55:280:55:30

and knocked Danny Hart down to third place.

0:55:300:55:34

Aaron Gwin, that's sensational.

0:55:340:55:36

Now just two racers still to go

0:55:390:55:41

and up at the top, another surprise rider,

0:55:410:55:43

Eddie Masters from New Zealand, ranked 44 in the world,

0:55:430:55:47

but got the second-fastest time in qualification.

0:55:470:55:49

Can he knock any of the big names off the podium?

0:55:490:55:52

Oh, no, he's off! In the sight of the start gate.

0:55:530:55:56

That's a massive crash.

0:55:560:55:58

I guess trying too hard.

0:55:580:55:59

Overcooked it on one of the very first turns.

0:55:590:56:03

Eddie Masters will not be challenging the leaders,

0:56:030:56:05

at least for this year.

0:56:050:56:06

So, now, all eyes will be on the last man to race.

0:56:060:56:10

Britain's very own Gee Atherton.

0:56:100:56:12

The last rider out and fastest qualifier

0:56:140:56:16

from the Saturday qualifications, Gee Atherton,

0:56:160:56:19

the ex-world champion of 2014 and hero here in Fort William.

0:56:190:56:24

He won the British Downhill Series here last year

0:56:240:56:27

and came seventh at Lourdes earlier on this year where,

0:56:270:56:30

apparently, he looked as though he was on the brakes on little bit.

0:56:300:56:33

He had a crash in qualification there, shook his confidence,

0:56:330:56:36

but Gee will be pushing so hard here.

0:56:360:56:39

Oh! That... Oh, too hard.

0:56:390:56:41

That looks like a very bad crash.

0:56:410:56:44

And that is it. Oh, that's not good.

0:56:440:56:47

I'm afraid Gee's challenge for a podium is over.

0:56:470:56:52

That was a big spill for Gee,

0:56:540:56:56

but that means Greg Minnaar is the champion once again.

0:56:560:57:02

Holds up the Canadian flag in honour of Stevie Smith, and smiles.

0:57:020:57:08

He's won here more times than anyone else.

0:57:080:57:11

Sensational stuff from Greg Minnaar. Champion 2016.

0:57:110:57:16

Brilliant, brilliant result. Congratulations.

0:57:160:57:19

Thank you, yeah. It was tough, you know.

0:57:190:57:22

Yesterday I had a bit of a mechanical in the qualifying

0:57:220:57:26

so I wasn't sure I had the track speed

0:57:260:57:29

but I just put it all out today

0:57:290:57:31

and managed to pull it off.

0:57:310:57:34

He most certainly did, and the final results look like this.

0:57:340:57:38

A fantastic ride for Adam Brayton from Keswick.

0:57:380:57:41

He came in fourth, with a time of 4:39.65.

0:57:410:57:45

Third place went to Danny Hart from Redcar in 4:39.6.

0:57:450:57:51

In second place it was Aaron Gwin from America

0:57:510:57:54

with his time of 4:38.96,

0:57:540:57:57

but in a time of 4:35.6,

0:57:570:58:00

Greg Minnaar, once again, took the top spot.

0:58:000:58:03

Well, another Fort William, and a sensational one.

0:58:040:58:07

The course here at Aonach Mor has stood up,

0:58:070:58:09

the racing has been absolutely wonderful

0:58:090:58:11

and the champions have performed to their very best.

0:58:110:58:15

This has been a brilliant weekend.

0:58:150:58:16

But that's it for this Adventure Show.

0:58:160:58:18

Next time around, we'll be doing the West Highland Way.

0:58:180:58:21

95 miles endurance contest, running as hard and as fast as you can.

0:58:210:58:26

Please join us for that if you can.

0:58:260:58:28

Until then, from all of us here, bye for now.
