Football League Trophy Highlights The Football League Show

Broken from Wembley on a wonderful spring day for one of the biggest

occasions in the Football League calendar, the Johnstone's Paint

Trophy final. We are down to the last two teams. This year we see a

side from League One against a side from League Two. League Two

promotion chasers Chesterfield will have their second appearance in the

final having beaten Swinton here two years ago. How are you feeling?

Fantastic. We are going to win. We had a blinding night just before

Christmas. We went to the Dagenham game. We have been here four times

with them now, two play-offs and two of these. It is a good chance to get

the parents and kids all in the crowd, and amazing David M. The

Spireites beat Mansfield, on the way to the final four Chesterfield took

control of the tie against Fleetwood Town. They got goals from Ian Evatt,

Samuel Maudsley and 25 screamer from Jimmy Ryan. John Parkin knocked the

ball home in the dying minister spark at chess finale. Chesterfield

went through, three to -- Chesterfield went through, 3-2 on

aggregate. Darren Ferguson will be hoping for the first of two visits

to Wembley this season. He scored in the 2005 final for Wrexham. He will

be leading out the Posh at their first ever Johnstone's Paint Trophy

final. How was it feeling today? I spoke to him this morning. This is

the second time of his coming to Wembley. Hopefully it is a good day

for him to bring the trophy back to Peterborough. We came here in 1992

and 2001, the weather was brilliant, we looking forward to a good game.

The importance of these trophies, to get to Wembley is fantastic.

Peterborough overcame Brentford, Dagenham and Newport County before

facing promotion rivals, Swindon. In the return leg, Britt

Assombalonga equalised in the closing stages. Swindon had taken

the lead to make sure that the tie would be decided by a penalty shoot

out. Two misses for Swindon before Tommy Rowe scored calmly to send the

Posh to Wembley. So we are here for the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final,

in the commentary box, Steve Claridge and Dan O'Hagan.

The day when promotion goes on to the back burner, Wembley, sunshine a

trophy. Chesterfield the winners here two years ago, third place in

League Two, and then this is the new Wembley debut for Peterborough.

Neither club has lost at the national stadium. So today,

something has to give. For the Spireites, only Tommy Lee survives

from the final two years ago, playing his 701st senior game, and

Gary Roberts returns, he is their top scorer, with 11 goals.

Britt Assombalonga has unfinished business. He lost the final with

Southend 12 months ago. Surely, there has to be a Ferguson getting a

trophy this season. Darren Ferguson, the son of Sir Alex.

It is a glorious spring afternoon. League One, facing League Two, for

the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. Steve Claridge, is that a factor, the

teams coming from different divisions? Yes, in a way.

Chesterfield are on a good run, and Peters as Mac eta bra not. -- Peter

Rahmat. -- Peterborough are not. If you are from the higher division,

you should get out there, and win it. Played away by Knight-Percival.

That was a fierce header clear, four Chesterfield. Danny Swanson,

dispossessed. The man who had a loan spell the Chesterfield as a wall

display some six years ago. -- as a Wolves player.

James O'Shea can attack. And that tumble in the box. The referee says

no penalty. No contact with the ball from the defender. Some might say he

has gone down easily, but there is certainly contact from behind. If

you make those challenges, you have to make sure you get the ball.

Looking towards Danny Swanson, and Assombolonga, back to Swanson. Danny

Swanson, over the bar, a deflection for a corner kick, with Joe Newell

making a telling connection. In the end, it was a fantastic block. The

corner kick, the header from Shaun Brisley, and Josh McQuoid puts

Peterborough in front. The goalkeeper does well to parry that,

but it also Josh McQuoid, and from three yards, he's going to make no

mistake. The marking is absolutely shocking. That is practically a

clear run on goal. That came after a strong and bright

start by Chesterfield. Assombolonga, in behind, away from Tommy Lee, was

he caught? The answer is in the negative. No penalty. It is half and

half. He does get on the wrong side. He is strong and quick. He tries to

stay on his feet. So far, three promotions but no cups

for Darren Ferguson. That has come to Jimmy Ryan, onto

Eoin Doyle. Now the attacking right back, it is Darikwa, and across, but

he has fluffed it. For the first time they have got many in the box.

It is difficult to describe what he is trying to do. Not his stronger

foot. It was a poor finish in the end. Watching his son, maybe lift

the trophy. You cannot have a season with no Fergusons winning a trophy,

so he will be cheering on Darren today.

Sam Morsy, looking for Darikwa. Knight-Percival has had a good first

half. Throw-in for the Spireites. Darren Ferguson will be quick to

point out that Chesterfield have been fantastic down this right-hand

side. Again, lovely move, good opportunity to put the ball in the

box and a nice angle. Robots with a free kick for Chesterfield. --

Roberts. He takes it, and the header, Robert Olejnik takes it, and

another big chance for Chesterfield. They will not get a better chance.

That is a marvellous chance. Why he has not gone the other side, I do

not know. Assombolonga, fed by Swanson. Swanson, with the cute

touch, Assombolonga tries to bend one. Blocked by Cooper. They will be

disappointed to go behind. It was a questionable decision with regard to

the penalty that should have been given. They have had one or two

excellent opportunities, Chesterfield.

In by Swanson, and another goal from a corner kick. Two for Peterborough.

Shaun Brisley leaps and doubles the advantage for Posh. He gets in front

of Cooper, he is strong, he gets the run and jump, he attacks the ball,

and that is a wonderful header, giving the keeper absolutely no

chance. Sam Morsy, to Roberts. The cross in,

and that was another chance for Chesterfield, another that they have

failed to date. It looks like a great opportunity. It is a

particularly typical ball to get on the end of. Trying to judge the ball

as it bounces. -- particularly difficult.

Halfway. Josh McQuoid with his first ball for well over a year, putting

the Posh in the box seat, and Shaun Brisley gives them the 2-goal

cushion, but some big misses from Chesterfield, it is harsh on the

League Two site so far. The half-time score, Chesterfield zero,

Peterborough two. The managers have had their half-time input. Now to

see how their teams react for the second half. The first half set the

bar high. Can the second-half follow? The next goal is important.

If it goes to Peterborough, it could be game over. If it goes to

Chesterfield, hang on to your hat. Having looked at both teams going

forward, you have to say that at this stage, it is not a done deal.

That was Tommy Lee's ball. His goal was the breakthrough, could Shaun

Brisley's be, potentially, the clincher?

Darren Ferguson's team holding sway but I am sure that Paul Cook will

wonder how that is the case when his team-mates such good chances in the

first half, but did not take them. -- when his team made.

Swanson White, for Josh McQuoid. Assombolonga, and the ball breaks

loose to Tommy Rowe. And the danger has gone. That was a fantastic

chance for Assombolonga. Josh McQuoid has played a strange role.

He has popped up our wide, he has done a defensive job. That is a

marvellous ball in. Time to see that, time to work his options, and

Assombolonga just takes his eye off the ball.

arcs and bends up and over. He gets that on those left foot. He

threatens to go down the line, he floated inside, and that is

unlucky. Both of these teams have had more than enough to cause

problems going forward. Morsy with a driving run. A good

run. Doyle! Back to 2-1, and there is real hope

now for Chesterfield. That is fantastic. For the neutral, that is

what the game needed. It is what they deserved. A marvellous move. It

encapsulates the game as a whole, this goal. A fantastic run from

Morsy. They get that little bit of luck with the deflection but that is

a wonderful finish from Doyle. A super finish, game on. It is no

more than the team deserves. Back at 2-1, and hope springs eternal.

Morsy, here he goes again. Doilies and again. Just a fraction, no more

than that, too high, for a wind oil. Not enough room to work with for

Roberts. The keeper came out, he could not quite get it in. He is a

whisker away from getting a touch. Rowe, a flick on for Assombalonga.

Rowe, a lovely turn. A bit of a lunge, it might be the

first card from the referee. The referee says one is enough.

Humphreys gets the yellow card, his third of the season. The two players

have quality, Swanson and McCann. Both can make the dead ball thing

for them, as they try to reclaim the two goal cushion in the final. Here

is McCann, for the Posh. A great finish, you would not expect them to

be beaten from there. Goes round the wall, he does read that free kick,

as you can see. He is moving towards his right hand side.

Newell Court. Morsy has kicked in. Morsy has gone down here. The card

is red! Joe Newell is sent off at Peterborough and now their lead

looks even more tenuous at two - one. He has kicked out at him. He is

not happy with the initial challenge. We have seen Morsy and

Newell get together on one or two occasions. He has kicked out, you

can't do that. There is a slight provocation. He might feel he has

been caught, he might feel that Morsy has trodden on him, but you

cannot react like that. Darragh MacAnthony has overseen

promotions and maybe the club's first-ever win in the Football

League Trophy is only a few minutes away.

Little goes on, he has gone down. That is a penalty! Having had big

calls of their own hands down, this one goes against Chesterfield. Great

play, real strength and power. A definite penalty. You can see the

reaction of the player. Britt Assombalonga.

Assombalonga, down the middle and 3-1 Peterborough. That might be it

for the ten men of the Posh. Yes, if in doubt, wait for the keeper to

make the first move and stick it where he has just come from. He had

eyes only for the keeper, Assombalonga. There you go, he

doesn't give anything away. He is looking at the keeper. Puts it

straight down the middle. He has taken a spill, the appeals

are not that loud. Your bobbin he is trying to flick the ball on but does

not make any real contact and there is no appeal for. -- there is no

appeal for a penalty. A deflected shot. Initially he

doesn't do too much, pretty much kept his position and he is able to

smother the deflection. Roberts is League Two's top assist

man this season, 12 so far in the league. Roberts takes.

That might just see out the game for Peterborough. Good defending out

there. The ball comes out. He clears it. That probably is going to be the

last opportunity. Isgrove! Looking for his first ever

senior goal. Denied there by Lee, with a fine block at the near post.

He has picked up the loose ball, that is exactly what you want from a

substitute. High energy, high tempo and he is prepared to do his work

defensively as well. The referee checks his watch and blows. Ferguson

Trophy in this season, Darren Ferguson, not Sir Alex. He has

hands-on silverware at Wembley Stadium. It is the first-ever win in

this Football League Trophy for Peterborough United. They have won

this season's Johnstone's Paint Trophy. 3-1. Against very plucky,

impressive but ultimately beaten Chesterfield. The full-time score,

it ends Chesterfield one, Peterborough three.

I was asked if there was any nerves and there were not. We practised

yesterday. I went straight down the middle. I scored penalties before,

on the left and on the right, it was time to go down the middle. That is

your 28th goal of the season. What a famous campaign this has been for

you. Yes, definitely. To score 28 goals and to win here at Wembley,

you cannot ask for more. We have a lot of games left this season and

hopefully we can continue. We have been beaten. I congratulate them. We

have six great games left in League Two. I wanted the lots to play well

today and have no regrets about the results of the decision. We didn't

get a couple of big ones today, we wish Peterborough all the best. We

move on now. He wears the scars of battle. His team have really carried

the banner for League Two, really well, impressively today, as they

get their runners-up medals. They played their part in what was a

terrific final. But there has to be a loser at Wembley and today, I am

afraid, the fall guys are Chesterfield.

You want to win cup finals. You are disappointed. You can take heart, of

course you can, but people are disappointed. We have six remaining

league games and try to get promoted. I can see the pain on your

face, it is not nice. It is my first time here, it is not nice losing cup

finals. You have to take heart from the way you play but it is the

result that matters and nobody wants a loser's medal. People don't

understand some of these lesser cup competitions. It is a chance to play

at Wembley and in your case, win three times. Some people never play

here in their whole career, so to play here four times and win three

is unbelievable. They are going for the trophy without you.

There is the prize. Rowe leads the troops towards the silverware. A job

well done. It was the final in which both teams more than played their

part. It was great to watch. But there has to be a winner and a

Can you describe what it is like when the ball hits the back of the

net at Wembley? It is just excitement going through your blood.

You are buzzing. It is a great feeling. Relief, almost. You have

been a little bit here and a little bit there. To have a high like

this, it restores your faith in yourself. Yes -- definitely. I have

had a tough time but I have come here to get a few games and

hopefully I can click on now. I will go and celebrate. What a couple of

glory seekers you are, the 71st game for Peterborough and finally you hit

the back of the net, at Wembley! It is not a bad place to come and score

your first. I could not have picked a better venue. It was a bullet. I

have not seen it back, I just shut my eyes and hopes for the best. You

have won it macro was up -- you have won it as a player and won it as a

manager. We spoke about it, we have a good team. It was always going to

be a tough game and it was. They really put in a shift and they made

you put in a shift. They are a good team, League One next season. They

have good players. I felt when it mattered we were more clinical than

them and we got three goals and great credit to the players. You

have great spirit and a few youngsters. Will you be disciplining

Newell after that? I will not talk about that. He will learn from it.

He is a young boy. It causes a problem. After that, onesie went to

three, I thought if anybody would score it would be us on the

counterattack. You have to give Chesterfield great credit and I do

hope they go up because they play the right way. I can't believe, you

are quite public about this, we are going to win the J Beattie this year

as well as get promoted. It is the FA Cup for League One and League

Two. All these people understand it, they are enjoying it. The city has

embraced it and got behind it. It was one of our targets. I am proud.

It will mean nothing if we are not back here in six weeks. We have to

come back. Many congratulations to Peterborough and their fans. You get

the impression is the celebrations have only just begun. Leroy is here

with me. The players have been replaced by the ground staff at

Wembley Stadium. You look back at that first half, Peterborough were

2-0 up going into the break with Chesterfield having seen much of the

ball. Chesterfield played well between both boxes. Shaun Brisley

won the header when Ian Evatt was off the pitch having his head injury

scene do. I thought Tommy Lee could have done better in terms of its

handling. Josh McQuoid shakes off the challenge of Sam Morsy and that

was against the run of play. It was a dream start for Peterborough after

six minutes. The second goal came against the run of play. " I Shaun

Brisley winning a fantastic header. Paul Cook will be disappointed there

was nobody on the back post. Somebody should have been inside a

back post. They find themselves 2-0 down, when they had played fairly

well. The Chesterfield manager felt hard done by. They have a strong

penalty shout turned down. It was a penalty. I was surprised that Andy

D'Urso did not blow up for it. Shaun Brisley was involved with the

challenge on Doyle. Andy D'Urso has got a good view of that. He does not

see it. That was a turning point in the game. At that point, it would

have made things difficult for Peterborough. Andy D'Urso Little

Rock go during the 90 minutes, but Chesterfield had their chances. Sam

Morsy arrives in a box, unfortunately for him it is on his

weaker left foot. He will be disappointed. He's a good header of

the ball. He is on his own at the far post, and he puts that straight

at the keeper. They created chances but did not take them. Chesterfield

needed a fast start in the second half, eight minutes in, they got the

goal. Sam Morsy was a driving force from midfield. It goes to the legs

of Shaun Brisley. And again, though, working hard upon, a lovely finish.

The turning point, which Chesterfield fans thought might have

tilted the contest in their favour, Peter Brodie just to ten men, --

heat of a ridge men. -- Peterborough reduced to ten men. As the ball

seems to settle, he seems to just lash out. Sam Morsy goes down. It is

petulant. He's only 21. He has learned the hard way. Andy D'Urso

had no option but to send him off. Peterborough looked stronger as a

result of going down to ten men. They seem to sit back and play on

the break. Assombolonga was quite thrilled the game but he did more

after that. And that man, Mark Little, a fantastic run. He comes

in, and Assombolonga step up and put it away. All of a sudden, you felt

it was going to be difficult for Chesterfield. Both teams cannot

afford to dwell on this, because they still have so much red --

riding on their season. Chesterfield can take a lot out of the game. For

long periods, they looked like the team from the higher division. They

can come straight into League One, but for Peterborough, it is a dress

rehearsal for the play-offs. Firm has not been great lately, -- home

is not been great, but this gives them some amends. They do not want

to be coming back here again. Paul Cook will be frustrated. I am sure

that he is proud, because his players put on a decent display.
