The Great North Run is really special. A lot of people are taking

:00:15.:00:22.

part and and running for charities and loved ones.

:00:22.:00:27.

The Great North Run is special to us because it helps us remember our

:00:27.:00:31.

friend Emma Newton. It inspired me to run across the

:00:31.:00:34.

United States of America. I love the Great North Run because

:00:34.:00:37.

it is a great atmosphere and a chance to run around the streets of

:00:37.:00:44.

Newcastle with 50,000 other runners The Great North Run is special for

:00:44.:00:50.

the crowd. The Great North Run is special

:00:50.:00:58.

because you get to run over the fabulous Tyne Bridge.

:00:58.:01:03.

The Great North Run is a special event because it is historic and in

:01:03.:01:13.
:01:13.:01:13.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 59 seconds

:01:13.:02:13.

Welcome to the highlights of the 2011 BUPA Great North Run. I could

:02:13.:02:16.

bore you with facts and figures, but I don't think it is necessary

:02:16.:02:20.

because when it comes to half marathons, this is as good as it

:02:20.:02:30.
:02:30.:02:36.

marathons, this is as good as it Well the Great North Run has seen

:02:36.:02:44.

some brilliant athletic performance, you about the event is measured in

:02:44.:02:48.

the reasons behind why the people choose to run the 13 miles. There

:02:48.:02:56.

is one story which is set to cap turet hearts of the nation. It is

:02:56.:03:03.

the widow of the Red Arrows pilot is going to start the race and then

:03:03.:03:05.

is going to start the race and then run in her husband's memory.

:03:05.:03:10.

I know you set up a trust for John? John was really passionate about

:03:10.:03:15.

using his skills as a qualified flying instructor to inspire young

:03:15.:03:18.

people to be the best they can be and to develop their natural

:03:19.:03:23.

talents so I'm going to be taking that forward in John's name.

:03:23.:03:28.

Tell us about John. I know you were so proud of him and he was so proud

:03:28.:03:32.

to be a member of the Red Arrows, wasn't? Yeah, John was an amazing

:03:32.:03:38.

person. He loved his job. He loved flying and he loved being there for

:03:38.:03:42.

everyone and whilst the day is really difficult, I'm honoured to

:03:42.:03:45.

be at Great North Run and to run in his memory.

:03:45.:03:51.

I know you have you have had tremendous support from the Red

:03:51.:03:55.

Arrows and the public as well? have been astounded by the support.

:03:55.:04:00.

It has just really carried me through the last few weeks. The

:04:00.:04:03.

military have been brilliant and the public have been there.

:04:04.:04:08.

How have you kept going? Well, John and I were big runners. We loved

:04:08.:04:11.

running and it is hard to do this without him, but running is

:04:11.:04:15.

brilliant and it is going to get me through and the at moss moss fear

:04:15.:04:19.

is great. -- atmosphere is great.

:04:19.:04:23.

You are saying that you are looking forward to seeing the Red Arrows up

:04:23.:04:33.
:04:33.:04:35.

there again? I know that they fly at the the Great North Run but I've

:04:36.:04:45.
:04:46.:04:47.

never seen them. It will be I always like a young lady in in

:04:47.:04:50.

tutu, I'm not sure about a bloke! There is a serious reason why you

:04:50.:04:57.

are dressed like this? I'm run by my niece who was killed in a tragic

:04:57.:05:01.

accident. The reason we're dressed like this because she was a

:05:01.:05:06.

fantastic dancer and that's the reason for the tutu and the glasses

:05:06.:05:10.

are because it is what she wore all the time. She wore big glasses and

:05:10.:05:16.

the red lipstick which I haven't got on yet, it is just to brighten

:05:16.:05:19.

her face and make her look so beautiful. That's why we're dressed

:05:20.:05:23.

like this today. You are a cousin. You set up a fund

:05:23.:05:29.

in her memory. What's the fund for? It is just for young adults just to

:05:29.:05:33.

fund them with the performing arts, to help them with the performing

:05:33.:05:36.

arts really. And you are looking forward to

:05:36.:05:41.

today, bitter sweet? Yeah. It is a bit scary, but I'm looking forward

:05:41.:05:51.
:05:51.:05:52.

to it. Tell me what's your official duties

:05:52.:05:57.

today? Today, it is to write a poem during the run while I'm running

:05:57.:06:02.

and have it finished by the end to go over the highlights show!

:06:02.:06:08.

It never does seize to amaze me what people turn up to run the

:06:08.:06:14.

Great North Run. What is this? lime is Lee Curtis, we're running

:06:14.:06:20.

for the national lifeboat service. People risk their lives every day.

:06:20.:06:24.

We thought we would run and see how much money we can raise for them.

:06:24.:06:34.
:06:34.:06:37.

How about you two ladies? We're raising funds for Walk The Walk,

:06:37.:06:44.

Uniting Against Breast Cancer. There is the scene at the start and

:06:44.:06:48.

as the thousands are making their way down the central motorway, it

:06:48.:06:55.

will be their turn to get away. The will be their turn to get away. The

:06:55.:07:00.

wheelchair athletes are ready. 20 elite wheelchair racers are

:07:01.:07:08.

ready to go. There is Josh Cassidy of Canada. He won a brilliant race

:07:08.:07:15.

through the Tyne Tunnel a couple of days ago and panning across, we

:07:15.:07:19.

have seen Richard Coleman and Shelley Woods the defending

:07:19.:07:24.

champion in the women's race. A big smile to the camera. Lovely

:07:24.:07:34.
:07:34.:07:39.

The first racers of 2011 are underway.

:07:39.:07:46.

Next to Shelly Woods, we saw a brief glimpse of Amanda McGrory.

:07:46.:07:51.

brief glimpse of Amanda McGrory. She is in the pink and white.

:07:51.:07:57.

Shelly Woods in the light blue, but Josh Cassidy of Canada gets this

:07:57.:08:07.
:08:07.:08:11.

race underway being chased hard by the Frenchman.

:08:11.:08:17.

It should be a great race here today.

:08:17.:08:22.

Well, every year this sight is one that inspires thousands to come

:08:22.:08:26.

part. Those who have been here before, they know what it is about,

:08:26.:08:29.

but it doesn't diminish the experience they are going to have.

:08:29.:08:32.

Good Good conditions this year. It is about 13 Celsius at the start.

:08:32.:08:37.

It is very, very light breeze and the sun just trying to breakthrough

:08:37.:08:42.

the clouds and that means we should have good conditions for the elite

:08:42.:08:47.

racers. It will be the women to get us underway. A strong field with

:08:47.:08:57.
:08:57.:08:58.

good British representation from Jo Pavey and Helen Clitheroe. A good

:08:58.:09:03.

start as they campaigned against for the election to the Olympics

:09:03.:09:09.

next year. It is important they get a good run today. They have tough

:09:09.:09:14.

competition against them. A quality field, but we have got a real

:09:14.:09:18.

serious British presence. I'm interested to see how Helen

:09:18.:09:24.

Clitheroe runs today. We know Jo Pavey came here a few years ago and

:09:24.:09:28.

finished third. I wonder if Jo can go any better than that this time?

:09:28.:09:34.

They are going to have certificate suss competition -- serious

:09:34.:09:44.
:09:44.:09:59.

mile is always a bit quick. They have to be careful they don't

:09:59.:10:04.

overcook it. There is a fair few people in front of them. It will

:10:04.:10:09.

take a long time for them to cross the start line. Jo Pavey keen to

:10:09.:10:15.

get things underway and comes here in good shape, thinking she can run

:10:15.:10:20.

well and she will be running the New York Marathon and hoping to get

:10:20.:10:23.

the qualifying time for the Olympics. She has it, but she wants

:10:23.:10:27.

to run in New York. There are four or five women who are going to

:10:27.:10:31.

qualify in the next few months leading into next year so it is

:10:31.:10:35.

important that these next couple of races go well, particularly today.

:10:35.:10:41.

So the warm up is well underway. It won't be long before they get

:10:41.:10:48.

their turn. Even Nell McAndrew going through

:10:48.:10:55.

her routine. Full of smiles as ever. No doubt, there will be a swift

:10:55.:10:59.

performance from Nell. She is a very, very good runner.

:10:59.:11:09.
:11:09.:11:14.

Joe pavy is at the back of that group. Unfortunately, there is Jo

:11:14.:11:19.

Pavey. Helen Clitheroe running strongly and staying in position

:11:19.:11:29.
:11:29.:11:32.

there in her debut in the half marathon. She has had injury

:11:32.:11:35.

problems for 12 months and she was hoping and indeed I think expecting

:11:35.:11:40.

to put in a good performance today. It is early stages, but not good

:11:40.:11:49.

signs at this point. It is a really poignant day for the

:11:49.:11:59.
:11:59.:12:31.

favourite in the green vest and mo Farah. They are on their way.

:12:31.:12:39.

All of the training, all of the preparation now put into practise.

:12:39.:12:45.

All of the stories set to unfold, all of the millions of pounds to be

:12:45.:12:55.
:12:55.:12:58.

raised for charity and we hope as well a performance or two that Mo

:12:58.:13:06.

Farah might have an eye on. This Kenyan runner has opened up a

:13:06.:13:11.

huge gap. 27 minutes of running only on the clock. Much less than

:13:11.:13:17.

half-way and there was alstrong group, -- a strong group, included

:13:17.:13:21.

in that group was Helen Clitheroe and Jo Pavey and suddenly they find

:13:21.:13:26.

themselves repofd from the lead -- removed from the leader and away

:13:26.:13:30.

down the road, but they have probably been taken by surprise the

:13:30.:13:39.

way the former Commonwealth champion is running. The two

:13:39.:13:46.

British athletes are locked together.

:13:46.:13:54.

The field has broken up early. Jo Pavey is running with Helen

:13:54.:13:58.

Clitheroe. I am sure she wants to make sure she finishes of Helen

:13:58.:14:01.

Clitheroe because that would be unexpected if it were to be the

:14:02.:14:08.

other way around. There you see the desmation caused by the Jamaican.

:14:08.:14:12.

There is a big, big gap at this early stage. They are going to turn

:14:12.:14:17.

the corner and head towards South Shields, but at this early stage

:14:17.:14:21.

that's a large lead. The women are at the half-way point

:14:22.:14:28.

and the men and the masses have just got underway, just past the

:14:28.:14:37.

the first mile. You can see and Andy Vernon in the height vest.

:14:37.:14:43.

There is a group of talented Kenyans including the London

:14:43.:14:53.
:14:53.:15:12.

supporting them already. The Kenyan has been pouring it on.

:15:12.:15:18.

It was the mile before that where she had done the damage. She is

:15:18.:15:22.

running very, very strongly. This is really quick running from the

:15:22.:15:24.

Kenyan and something which we haven't seen for quite a highly

:15:24.:15:30.

there. So perhaps taking the field by surprise.

:15:30.:15:35.

Josh Cassidy of Canada held the lead since the beginning. This is

:15:35.:15:41.

his fifth Great North Run, he won it before in 2008. He has never

:15:41.:15:46.

been out of the top three and he will win it by a mile here today. A

:15:46.:15:55.

very fast time, indeed. Josh Cassidy is our first winner.

:15:55.:16:00.

Absolutely exhausted, but this man developing into one of the finest

:16:00.:16:10.
:16:10.:16:12.

road racers of his generation in a wheelchair.

:16:12.:16:17.

Another fast time for the French athlete. The conditions have been

:16:17.:16:27.
:16:27.:16:32.

ideal for fast wheelchair racing. He couldn't catch Cassidy though.

:16:32.:16:39.

The Jamaican running strongly now. She based herself in Japan Japan

:16:39.:16:46.

after she won the Commonwealth Games. Her manager has been telling

:16:46.:16:50.

us that she has been running well and had a chance, but I don't think

:16:51.:17:00.
:17:01.:17:02.

he thought this. Now Shelley Woods has broken away from Amanda McGrory.

:17:02.:17:08.

She has ridden beautifully here. Just outside McGrory's course

:17:08.:17:13.

record. Shelly Woods on her own. Nobody else to be seen anywhere

:17:13.:17:21.

within 400 or 500. The gaps here are really

:17:21.:17:27.

substantial. The former winner struggling up the road here. The

:17:27.:17:35.

pace that the Jamaican has set. If she were to maintain the pace it

:17:35.:17:41.

would be one of the best runs ever. The course record belongs to Paula

:17:41.:17:51.

Radcliffe, but she is going quickly. The leading man in the black vest

:17:51.:17:55.

vest. In the green vest there is the London Marathon winner and

:17:55.:18:00.

behind him the former world marathon champion. Those two have

:18:00.:18:06.

been taken by surprise. There is good track speed athletes ahead of

:18:06.:18:16.
:18:16.:18:35.

them. They are forcing the pace a thousands cross heading down

:18:35.:18:40.

towards South Shields the Red Arrows do their familiar fly-past.

:18:40.:18:45.

On this occasion they will be remembering Red Four performing the

:18:45.:18:55.
:18:55.:19:09.

here and adding to the sense of occasion as ever. Look at this bren

:19:09.:19:14.

darks there is a -- Brenda, there is a real push forward. That is

:19:14.:19:21.

unexpected? The two more renowned Kenyan distance runners are behind

:19:21.:19:24.

him. They will have been taken by surprise. Look at how fast he is

:19:24.:19:30.

moving. This is a huge burst. He is trying to get away from him. I

:19:30.:19:35.

wonder why doesn't he wait longer. It is early to be attacking as

:19:35.:19:39.

aggressively as this. Just using the hill there and the

:19:39.:19:46.

drop down to the pool area. That is early to be doing this. He has a

:19:46.:19:51.

lead there and he has opened it up quickly. He doesn't have a lot of

:19:51.:20:01.
:20:01.:20:02.

pedigree over this distance. He is looking comfortable. They

:20:02.:20:06.

wouldn't want that gap to get too big, but once somebody is away, it

:20:06.:20:16.
:20:16.:20:26.

exceptional. She is looking as though she is heading for a good

:20:26.:20:33.

time. Look at those mile splits. She is going extremely well.

:20:33.:20:36.

That's good running. This is going to be a really strong performance.

:20:36.:20:40.

She has to keep going over the last three miles and it will be tough.

:20:40.:20:47.

She is all on her own, but she will get support.

:20:48.:20:51.

This is a tough part of the course, and if she is going to get the fast

:20:51.:20:55.

time she has got to keep the pressure on here, but she's going

:20:55.:21:05.
:21:05.:21:06.

well. Well this little group now is

:21:06.:21:09.

working together. Helen Clitheroe is running a fairly solid

:21:09.:21:18.

performance. She raced yesterday in the Great City Game. I am not sure

:21:18.:21:23.

Jo Pavey would be too happy to see Helen at this point.

:21:23.:21:27.

They are heading for something around 70 minutes and I am sure Jo

:21:27.:21:30.

would have been looking for something a little quicker than

:21:30.:21:35.

that. But as a debut for Helen Clitheroe, it is a really solid

:21:35.:21:38.

performance and she is a good runner, Helen Clitheroe. She had a

:21:38.:21:46.

busy year. She started out with idoors and completed a full outdoor

:21:46.:21:50.

season on the track and she is having a good run today.

:21:50.:21:58.

The break wasn't long lasting. The bronze medallist in the World

:21:58.:22:02.

Championships a couple of years ago and then fifth place this year and

:22:02.:22:06.

he looks like the track runner he is, he is starting to put the

:22:06.:22:11.

pressure on. He is beginning to look more relaxed the faster he

:22:11.:22:21.
:22:21.:22:28.

goes. She knows it has been a great

:22:28.:22:32.

performance. She must be aware of how fast she is going. The clock is

:22:32.:22:38.

ticking quickly. We were thinking she might get under 67 minutes. Not

:22:38.:22:45.

too many women, only nine have run under 67 minutes ever in the

:22:45.:22:50.

history of half marathon running. She is producing the best

:22:50.:22:53.

performance since she won the Commonwealth title.

:22:53.:22:57.

And the big surprise is the way she has done T she has runaway from the

:22:57.:23:02.

field. Put world-class athletes behind her and showed her training

:23:02.:23:12.
:23:12.:23:19.

in Japan and back in Kenya has really worked for her this time.

:23:19.:23:27.

She She became a mother a few years ago. She has won - well, you can't

:23:27.:23:31.

see her competitors. They are so far behind.

:23:31.:23:38.

It is going to be outside 67 minutes, but one of the quickest

:23:38.:23:45.

runs. She wins the 2011 Great North Run. A brilliant run from the

:23:45.:23:52.

little Kenyan. Really, really world-class road running and she

:23:52.:23:59.

looks behind, nobody in sight. Only a couple of weeks ago Mo Farah

:23:59.:24:04.

was racing this man on the track. Mo was second in that race. He just

:24:04.:24:12.

failed to win the gold medal. A good performance by him there, but

:24:12.:24:16.

today he really is running well. He looks more relaxed the faster he

:24:16.:24:21.

goes. He's stretching now away from the field and if you look at his

:24:21.:24:26.

pedigree, his time is over 10,000, his time is over 5,000 meters, you

:24:26.:24:32.

knew he would run a good one and this is.

:24:32.:24:37.

The winner in 2009 having to settle for second place. It has been

:24:37.:24:40.

another good run for her. Her father died back in May and she

:24:40.:24:45.

said that really affected her. She has got his name tattooed on the

:24:45.:24:51.

inside of her arm. I am sure she has got a few thoughts for him as

:24:51.:24:55.

she enjoys the plaudits from the crowd and a quick time as well. Not

:24:55.:24:59.

too far outside her personal best, but today she was a long way behind

:24:59.:25:09.
:25:09.:25:12.

the winner, but a good performance from the Portuguese athlete.

:25:12.:25:17.

Jo Pavey in fourth place. It is great to see her back from that

:25:17.:25:21.

injury problem. Now she can go off to the New York Marathon and run

:25:21.:25:31.
:25:31.:25:33.

well there and hopefully, this Portuguese runner has run well.

:25:33.:25:39.

Coming on through there. Third place for her. In the the distance

:25:39.:25:47.

we can see both Jo Pavey in fourth place and a great debut in the half

:25:47.:25:57.
:25:57.:25:58.

marathon by Helen Clitheroe. Jo really had to work hard, not

:25:58.:26:02.

only to close that gap, but to put some distance between herself and

:26:02.:26:05.

Helen Clitheroe. She looks at the watch, I think she will be

:26:05.:26:08.

disappointed with that. It is a solid run. She might have been

:26:08.:26:15.

looking for something quicker. No doubt these in marathon training.

:26:16.:26:19.

Helen Clitheroe is very happy. She crosses the line in her first

:26:20.:26:29.
:26:30.:26:52.

marathon and that's a promising This is the leader. He knows he is

:26:52.:26:58.

on for a good time. He just has to keep the pressure on. I have been

:26:58.:27:08.
:27:08.:27:08.

so impressed with the way he performed today. We look at the

:27:08.:27:12.

second placed. What a superb run. One of the

:27:12.:27:16.

quickest ever half marathons the world has seen, never mind the

:27:16.:27:21.

Great North Run. It will be inside the course record, 59 minutes and

:27:21.:27:28.

05 seconds. But we have a new course record

:27:28.:27:36.

holder. And it is under 59 minutes. What a performance from the Kenya.

:27:36.:27:40.

No wonder he is pleased. That will certainly send a very signal to an

:27:40.:27:45.

awful lot of people that this man could be one to be reckoned with at

:27:45.:27:55.
:27:55.:28:00.

the longer distances. And the London Marathon winner,

:28:00.:28:08.

Mutai, not strong enough. The man to look out for next year in the

:28:08.:28:14.

Olympic marathon. A good solid performance from this

I was just going to try and give it everything I had. The wind was

favourable, but it was a hard- working day.

:28:40.:28:45.

On every hill I was climbing like a mad woman! I was descending like a

:28:45.:28:49.

woman possessed and trying to go out on all the flat. I'm happy and

I think it was actually the fastest I decided to come to go to Kenya to

they are trying to get to the finish as quickly as they can. Well,

How many times have you been at Great North Run? My 20th

:30:29.:30:34.

dad Mike who won the first Great North Run. Ryan has represented

Great Britain. I mentioned Liz Webster who is

and we can catch up with her now. She spoke to Denise Lewis. Tell us

Last year was the first year we had to sit and watch it because he

:31:05.:31:10.

wasn't well enough to run it and I told him I would run it. Here I am

running it in memory of him because he loved this place. He loved the

land and he loved the energy and enthusiasm and his first film story

was about a runner from the north- east and since that time he a great

Nell McAndrew. She is such a good runner. I am trying to see the

:31:39.:31:44.

clock. 85 minutes, well done, Nell. Flying around.

:31:44.:31:50.

Flying around. If you pardon the pun!

:31:50.:31:53.

It maybe magical at the start of the Great North Run with tens of

:31:53.:31:56.

thousands of runners stretched out across the central motorway, but it

:31:56.:32:00.

is hard to match the atmosphere at the finish. The sense of

achievement as the runners come through the finishing line and on

I thought you might might turn out in a Sunderland kit today? I said

because of the rain and things, but I got a pain in me ankle and it was

travelling up me leg and I really enjoyed it and I'm alive and that's

Well, the brollies are up, but it is maybe not the best for

spectating, but for the runners, it is giving them a nice cool down in

the last mile or so. There is Sophie Raworth. There is a smiling

Sophie crossing the line. You finish, you must be relieved?

:34:11.:34:17.

Oh yeah, it went really well. I'm happy.

:34:17.:34:23.

You raised lots of money? Yeah, I raised a couple of of hundred

:34:23.:34:30.

pounds for the Army Benevolent fund. We lost a lot of troops and this

goes helping the blokes who need the help now.

:34:32.:34:36.

Lots of famous faces come up to the north-east to do the run and one of

:34:36.:34:41.

the celebs was former X Factor Joe McEld dree. I'm wondering how fast

Explain why you did it? I had cancer and I wanted to put

:35:35.:35:40.

something back into a charity that supported cancer research in the UK.

:35:40.:35:47.

I wanted to do a big thing. That was great. I was all clear for five

:35:47.:35:51.

years until just before last year's Great North Run and then

:35:51.:35:55.

unfortunately I got diagnosed. A different type of cancer. It has

:35:55.:36:02.

been a bit of a rough year, but after 38 treatments, two months ago,

:36:02.:36:10.

I had all my tests completed and I'm free from cancer again. So I

:36:10.:36:14.

beat cancer three times and I'm really, it is a great day just to

:36:14.:36:19.

be back here again. There are some remarkable people

:36:19.:36:26.

out there today. Well, as the sun returns here to

:36:26.:36:30.

South Shields, it still looks a little bit dull in the distance. It

:36:30.:36:36.

is sunny at the finish now. A story which touched the the

:36:36.:36:41.

hearts of the people in the north- east is the story of Emma Newton. A

:36:41.:36:47.

whole bunch of people were running in memory of her and they have

:36:47.:36:55.

finished running now. Zpr. There is Robbie, Emma's father

:36:55.:37:01.

and one of the twins. He has been on on TV all day this guy? It is

:37:01.:37:07.

fantastic. Was it good? Brilliant. Excellent, unreal. I want to do it

:37:07.:37:17.
:37:17.:37:47.

I'm thinking of our son who is in hospital with leukaemia. There is a

:37:51.:37:54.

red and white appeal at Southampton where they are raising money for

:37:54.:37:57.

leukaemia. It has been all sorts of weather?

:37:57.:38:00.

Horrendous. I have interviewed lots of people

:38:00.:38:04.

after the Great North Run. Nobody has called it lovely? I like it. I

:38:05.:38:09.

enjoyed it. It has got a lovely atmosphere and you have got lovely
