the drama of club football, and we have got the best of the first round

of the Capital one Cup. It was the competition that had everybody

talking last season. Arsenal beat bedding seven - five, Chelsea beat

Manchester United 5-4, and rapid city had an unlikely final against

Swansea. 92 clubs set off on the route to Wembley glory.

Having changed their manager six times last season, have Blackburn

found some stability? We have the best from their potential

first-round upset against Carlisle. There is never much love lost

between Preston and Blackpool. We have action from a classic.

More cannot Blackpool out at the same stage last season. They have

their eye on another big catch in Wolverhampton. Plus, all of the

other goals from the opening ground, and another cracking start to this

year's competition. Our first stop is Carlisle, as they

hope to respond to their worst opening daily defeat for 77 years by

producing one of the shocks of the first round against Blackburn. Like

Byrne are finally showing signs of and Yann Songo'o for Blackburn.

scored on his debut in the weekend defeat to Leyton Orient, he follows

it up with the first goal of the Capital one Cup tie. They lead

inside a quarter of an hour. A super delivery from Josh Gillies.

Blackburn will feel they should have defended better. David Amoo was

allowed to jump inside the defenders, Joshua King and Chris

Taylor. Simon Eastwood had no chance. Carlisle survive. It was

Chris Taylor with the header, that is the closest Blackburn have come

to an equaliser. Mark Gillespie made with the deflection off Liam Noble.

Blackburn Rovers are level with a slice of luck. They needed that.

That was not heading in until it struck Liam Noble. It was good work

initially from Joshua King. When it came out to Tom Cairney, there was

only one thing in his mind. A snapshot from James Berrett, that

had Simon Eastwood scampering. They very nearly had the immediate

response, a nice turn. Simon Eastwood was very thankful to see

that go the right side of the post in there against Joshua King. He did

not get the ball. What a horrible two minutes it has been for Carlisle

United. Joshua King had got away from Paul Thirlwell, he just caught

him inside the penalty area. It is David Dunn, the captain for the

night, he won this competition in 2002 in the final against Spurs. He

is denied by Mark Gillespie! Mark Gillespie in the Carlisle goal

denies David Dunn, he guessed correctly. It was not the best

penalty of David Dunn's career. Mark Blackburn in front for the first

time tonight. Chris Taylor, their summer signing from Millwall, barks

his full debut with a goal. He has beaten Mark Gillespie this time. He

decided not to come for the cross. It was a simple haddock, climbing at

strikers combining for Carlisle United. Full credit to the teenager

Mark Beck. He won it back and delivered it for Lewis Guy to head

home. His first goal for Carlisle. It is an important one. A simple

task for Lewis Guy. Just two minutes of time added on to find a winning

he had won it for Carlisle. In the 91st minute. So did he. He still

cannot believe it. Blackburn are furious that the file was not given.

The referee waved play on. A full-length diving header, of the

post, and put behind by Todd Kane. A yellow card for Tom Cairney for his

substitute, Alan Judge. His first goal for the club. He restores their

lead. The little Dubliner, the man to finish it off. It is in on the

volley. Five minutes into extra there is his second, and he is off.

The cup tie takes and other tourist. Blackburn are down to ten men. They

were both innocuous. This is his second one. He had possession, he

was beaten by Mark Beck. There is a trailing leg. The referee says that

is a yellow card, it is his second one. On his full debut, a

second equaliser of the night, to get back on terms again. Two goals

for David Amoo, three for Carlisle, and this tie is not dead yet. It is

three in two games for his new club. He took it in his stride, the second

touch was emphatic. The goalkeepers in discussion, as they walked

towards the end where the penalties are going to be taken. They have

nothing to lose and everything to gain in this situation. The

Blackburn manager is not going to watch. Alan Judge, who thought he

had won it in extra time, to make it 3-2, to take the first penalty. A

very confident penalty. Blackburn Rovers are off and running. What a

moment this is for 19-year-old Alex Salmon. His third ever senior

appearance. He misses it. Big pressure situation for the teenager.

He scores. They are often running. He prevents the 2-goal advantage

after two penalties each. Jordan Rhodes. On as a substitute in extra

time. The natural goal-scorer finishes coolly to maintain

Blackburn's 100% record in the shoot out. James Berrett. Emphatically

dispatched, a punch of the air as well. He knew the importance. Next

for Blackburn, Chris Taylor. He scored their second goal in normal

time. His first for the club. He gets it horribly wrong. Blackburn's

100% record is gone. Liam Noble now has the chance to level it up in the

Morris, Blackburn's fifth penalty. And he can't score either. Right

against the crossbar. Back-to-back penalty misses for Blackburn. Taylor

and Morris. Carlisle have the opportunity to go into a second

round of the Capital One cup with a substitute. Yet another teenager who

scored in last year 's victory over championship club, Ipswich. This

penalty to beat Blackburn, which he does! Carlisle have done it the hard

way but they have done it and caused another shocker. Once again, for the

seventh time in eight seasons, they are through to the second round.

They have taken it to the wire. But they have not dashed knock the

Blackburn Rovers out. What a were bad on Saturday. We had a poor

start to the game going a goal down and had a man sent off. Losing three

goals in the final 20 minutes, it's a negative around the place.

Tonight, whoever complained about not getting their money 's worth

public got double tonight. It was a nice game for everyone to watch and

exciting and ended with a penalty thing that's what it's all about. A

lot of positives to come out of tonight as opposed to negatives.

Hadi found things out tonight? a number of changes we've made, I

thought there were some fantastic performances. It's given us

something to think about. We are disappointed for the fans as well

because there was a great following for them. We are disappointed we

have gone out because how many times did we lead? Even in the penalty

shoot out. It's been our undoing. But full credit to Carlisle. The

ordered as far as Abbott was concerned after a disaster is open

to the season on Saturday. He was pretty distraught about it. They

have the man sent off. That was not a result he would have wanted. But,

as you said, lots and lots of questions asked. They were all

answered tonight. A magnificent game of football. Certainly what we want.

to fit any more into that game, to be frank. Carlisle came back twice

in open play. A couple of times they could've gone under. After Saturday,

you could have excuse to going under but they just kept going and kept

symptom of the game. They could have gone either way) through it. It

ebbed and flowed. The goals were scored at the right moment in the

game, I think. Carlisle started very well. Then they had to claw

themselves back twice. Greg Abbott will be more pleased about that than

anything else because when you get beaten that heavily, on Saturday,

three days later you come out and you are up against a decent side,

Blackburn, and you show that resolve and carrot, it's good. We were

struggling to find a man of the match for them. 15 championship

sides drawn against teams from league two saw a great chance for

players from the lower leagues to make a name for themselves and we

start our look back with tonight 's match at Elland Road as lead

entertained Chesterfield. -- leads. Leeds have been knocked out of this

condition by opponents outside the top two divisions since the mid-90s

so the first goal since joining from class from Leeds veteran. Michael

Brown, 36, won't have scored goals better. United's nerves were gone

and I wasted no time asserting themselves. The finishing at the

was punished with a delicate opportunity from Gareth Evans. But

it didn't last. McGregor was given his debut despite only arriving on

loan from Celtic earlier in the afternoon. The decision was

justified as he picked out Enoch Showunmi. This had found the

woodwork but Danny Haynes was lurking to get his first goal for

County. Despite his hectic schedule today, McGregor had a good game. And

the way he effectively sealed the tide indicated he could be a useful

acquisition at Meadow Lane. But his team-mates made heavy weather of

seeing the game out. Smith's evening ended with him catching David Ball

and a second yellow card. Only eight minutes left but his absence almost

proved costly. What should have been a comfortable victory suddenly

became twitchy. Fleetwood had late Pope. Despite spending much of added

time frantically defending, County held on. -- late hope. For just over

an hour, Brighton's plans went to plan. They were in front through

Ashley Barnes. Albion continued to create chances but failed to add to

the lead. Anthony confessed in a 50-50 ball in the second half. The

evening took, new complexion. -- contested. Anthony was seriously

injured. There was no malice in the challenge but the referee sent off

the Brighton defender. Newport made excellent use of the extra man. Nine

minutes from the end of regular time, Chapman picked out Crowell.

Then an opportunity for a sizeable upset for the 500 travelling fans.

Brighton then in serious trouble. They sealed their own fate. A

wayward pass seems -- seized by Washington. After the weekend's fall

to Accrington Stanley, this was even at hospital now. We're just waiting

to hear if they will operate or tomorrow morning. I spoke to him on

the phone there. We are bitterly disappointed for him personally.

He's going to be a big loss for us but I think the boys responded. They

opposition is becoming a habit for Ipswich. They've done it in this

competition in five of the last eight seasons. They made sure they

though. The goalkeeper was injured in the warm up leading to an

unexpected run out for Stephen Arnold. A great save from Tony Smith

earned them a clean sheet. Such was the as local derby the kick-off was

delayed. That was to pack everybody into the stadium but for Rotherham

supporters, this was worth the wait. Wednesday's response was from even

further out as a free kick went through. Rather's use of their

monster throwing is was justified before half-time. Wednesday's

attempts to clear their lines was far less impressive than this

long-distance strike. That was the end of the scoring but not the

incident. Jermaine Johnson didn't appreciate this close attention and

once the camera had moved on, head-butted him, leaving the referee

with a simple decision. Johnson took to Twitter to apologise for his red

card, and active total stupidity, according to his manager, Dave

Jones. -- an act of total stupidity. No suggestion of a shock

for QPR. Rangers took the lead in the third minute. This shot was

deflected by Charlie Austin. With plenty of Premier League experience

in their side, QPR and made work. Simpson also got his first goal for

the club. -- made light work. Exeter had perhaps been a little starstruck

up to that point but threw caution to the wind. Dave is almost claimed

the goal of the night. But the crossbar came to Rangers's rescue. A

similar story for Shaun Wright-Phillips. He saw an effort

turned onto the woodwork. Comfortable for QPR but, at the

moment, they are capable of competing on more than one front.

It's only four years ago that Bournemouth were in league two and

Portsmouth in the Premier League but the new balance of power on the

south coast was highlighted when they were caught out. OK Netcenter

decided to round two for only the chance to impress at Bristol Rovers.

Murray made the most of it. He seized upon Brown's mistake to score

a quickfire brace. Rovers were always struggling against a much

long periods of the second half, it looked as though we would go to

extra time but we have certainly created enough goal-scoring

opportunities tonight and I think we deserve to go through. It is a tough

It looked innocuous, the Brighton player was harshly sent off, but it

was almost as if that rugby team together. If you are a side like

Newport, playing against a team that like to keep the ball, they go down

to ten men, it does not do brighten any favours, the state are chasing

the game. Take nothing away from Newport, it is a fantastic start, a

great result, they have beaten a team that had a great result on

Saturday, so a fantastic start. I played with Justin at Portsmouth, he

knows what he is doing. So far, so good. After two disastrous seasons

with successive relegation is, Wolverhampton were hoping for a good

cup run. Now as a League One side, they began their campaign at

dangerous when they have kept the ball down. That has hit the outside

of the post. The goalkeeper stuck 19-year-old smashing the frame of

Williams! League Two Morecambe have the lead! It is a magnificent free

kick. The man who scored a wonderful 25 yarder on his debut against

Plymouth last season has come up it in his locker. He has done it in

training and for the reserves, the goalkeeper spilled a couple, but the

I am sad to say that some of the Preston supporters have invaded the

playing area, despite requests not to do so. The stewards and the

supporters, I have been on the other side, it is an intense derby and it

was a close game. We talk about respect, we have seen enough

incidents where fans are allowed to run onto the pitch, we have seen

players get hit, when are we going matching last year's achievement,

when they lost in the final? They were in danger of losing their way

when Adam Clayton rocked and rolled through the defence, to be denied by

a goal-line clearance. They did fall behind just before half-time, James

Vaughan, himself much travelled, squeezed one past John MacLachlan.

He was signed from Norwich this summer. Seven minutes into the

second half, he was at it again, proving he is good in the air as

well as on the ground. Bradford were 2-0 down. They had made seven

changes from the team that true at the weekend. When the regular strike

partnership was reunited, they looked more potent, but Nahki

Wells's goal was to late. It has been a memorable start to James

Beattie's managerial career. A historic victory at Middlesbrough.

This was Middlesbrough's first home tie in the competition for five

years. Having scored inside the first ten minutes through Dukas yet

covets, progression would have seemed a formality. Accrington may

have finished 50 places behind their opponents last season, but they were

level, due to Marcus Carver's first senior goal. They secured one of the

most significant victories in their history when Piero Mingoia's shot

deflected in. Two - one, nine minutes to hold on. Middlesbrough

ended the night with 23 shots compared to Accrington's four, and

their first first-round defeat for shock at Charlton at Oxford's early

on display at Portsmouth, but Charlton were in control from when

Simon Church put them in front. The second half was even more one-sided,

Danny Green extending the lead. Charlton started playing some neat

stuff. Simon Church missed the easiest chance he had all night. The

former Reading striker would make amends. Latching onto a misdirected

shot, this time, finishing in fatty with his left foot. Oxford were more

than ready for the journey home, but their skipper pulled over the

rampaging striker, and Joe Pigott fired home the penalty kick.

Charlton are up and running. It is only to wonder half years since

Birmingham won the Capital One Cup. But only two of the players involved

that they are still at the club, and neither featured. Scott Allen scored

on his full debut, and then they had a penalty. Another of the 11 summer

signings was thwarted. That was a mess made more costly eight minutes

later when one of Plymouth's new recruits, Lewis Alexandra,

equalised. A stunning goal that took Plymouth to within six minutes of

extra time. Birmingham retook the lead when Scott Allen struck again.

He started the move and then swept home the cross to make it 2-1. But

still, they could not hold on, another new boy in hamsters

reputation. The Plymouth boss had first worked with Lewis Alessandra

at Oldham. The impressed the goalkeeper in stoppage time. Extra

time, Kyle Bartley put them on them through. They had got away with it.

Going close here, Rochdale, the only side until Bradford last season to

have reached the league cup final from the fourth tier. They were

grateful to the bar for denying Doncaster. It was goalless until the

89th minute. The Tottenham lonely Bongani Khumalo. Rochdale's 16

first-round defeat in 20 seasons. No side in League Two conceded more

goals than Wimbledon last season. This howler to letting Andy Keogh

suggested they could struggle at the back again. Millwall had suffered a

surprising defeat at home to Deauville at the weekend, but after

powerful work from Jermaine Easter, Martyn Woolford made almost certain

of the victory. Wimbledon did not lose heart at any stage. Luke

Moore's finish came too late to spark a revival. Millwall had done

competition four times, the in 1990. It was a comfortable evening for

them will stop Radoslaw Majewski, Greg Halford and Matt Derbyshire.

Hartlepool have not had a great start to the season. They are

managed by Colin Cooper. He got something on his return, through

midway through the first half. Oldham's biggest day saw them losing

by a fingertip save from Andy Lonergan. But goals either side of

the break swung the tie in Bolton 's favour. Dougie Freedman would have

been impressed with his strike. And now in his first start for the club,

he produced the goods where it mattered. Excellent finishing. And

Bolton were comfortable winners in the end. I felt we stayed strong. We

were very confident defending. We broke with pace and counter-attacked

well tonight and I think that was different. It was certainly a

spirited showing. A memorable night for Accrington. What a great night

football. I'm pleased in a way because last year they let everybody

in for free. They were disappointed with attendances and their revenue

streams will be looking to exploit it. Wolverhampton will have bigger

fish to fry. Its reward for being proactive and maybe that can keep

the enthusiasm going. Getting people through the turnstiles, which is

important. Accrington pulled a result out of the bag. What a great

place to get his first win, Middlesbrough. Questions will be

asked about the manager about the players after Saturday. There were

result at the weekend and would have welcomed going out of this condition

so early and they turned a negative into a positive. They withstood

pressure. In the end, fantastic result. All of a sudden, Saturday is

forgotten and we look forward. The ages of the skulls shows what James

desperate to give their fans performance of the opening day. They

rattled and five at Carlisle. They had a shocker midway through the

first half against Coventry. Carl Baker's electric finish came after

games but even these struggling to keep up with Dean Cox, who notched

in two in four minutes. It would be a surprise of his not in the

starting line-up on Saturday. It was turning into a pulsating cup tie but

early in the second half, Baker was red carded for a challenge. The

referee was perfectly positioned but as a reaction suggested he wasn't in

neat 1-2 with Callum Wilson, the ten men were back on level terms.

Coventry were playing with serious intent now. Clark burst into the

Orient box and was unfairly impeded. He had the chance to turn

the tide in Coventry 's direction but Jones, a top-notch save

low-down. Just like Saturday, they were cruelly beaten with a very late

goal. Lusby putting Orient into the hat for round two. Really, we should

have got off with ten minutes to go because we got another game coming

up on Saturday but we kept on because I thought he got me the

winner and he did. We play such energetic football tonight. At

times, you don't always get what you deserve. Several clubs from higher

up the footballing ladder, Liverpool, have been dumped out of

this competition by Northampton recently. So this opener was a

welcome sight for MK dons who increased their lead nine minutes

into the second half. Duke did his best but there was no stopping this

follow-up. Northampton kept it alive until the finish. They had fresh

hope 13 minutes from time when Donovan worked himself an opening.

That was as good as it got, though, Dagenham and Redbridge to a first

ever league cup winner. Nugent was own goal them ahead. A spot of an

Aussie area pinball ended with the substitute putting an equaliser.

Dagenham have lost each of their first-round matches since first

participating in 2007. A repeat showing looked likely when, two

minutes later, Brentford were ahead. They fought back, though, and

levelled with nine minutes to go. Scott firing the equaliser. They let

it slip in injury time. Brentford into the second round for the first

last season when they were two divisions apart and during one. Now

the result was reversed. Thomas's trouble set up this goal after 20

minutes. After scoring at the weekend, Thomas had another assessed

here as his shot in the second half fell to the feet of another

ex-Arsenal player. Jordan Winter scored his first ever professional

the blue knocked Sheffield United out in the first time for the second

successive season. The executioner was unlikely. Chris Hussey from AFC

Wimbledon endearing himself to his new supporters. Sheffield United

wasted numerous chances, many of them much easier than the one boil

against Brentford on Saturday and they responded well again, central

defender Robertson with his first goal for the club. Despite the

departures of a top scorers last season, Walsall appeared to have

plenty of attacking options and their superb winner came from James

Baxendale. He's celebrating a new three-year deal with a goal of the

highest quality. Very putts hopes of an upset ordered that came an early

bemoaning a side inability to deal with set pieces. They were punished

ruthlessly. Sean Deeley firing the home side level. And just nine

minutes after that, they turned the score on its head. This is right

under the nose of the referees assistant. From the spot, Sean

Harris took the safe route. His irritation with the defending

increased after the break as they claimed the final touch. A 2-0 lead

and some margin for error. They needed that because Ryan proved too

quickly goalkeeper. Harry Davies was handed a lifeline with 15 minutes

left to play. He held his nerve and made it count but crew couldn't hold

themselves to safety. Berry went not attract the same headlines as

the other round one upsets, but this was arguably the tie of the round.

They took the lead midway through the first half thanks to Gary

Alexander's header. Cheltenham were soon back in it. Byron Harrison, the

second penalty. Matt Richards scored. The Robins went into the

break on level terms. An unpredictable second-half saw

Crawley surge into a seemingly unassailable position. This snapshot

from Adams was the first of his two goals in six minutes. The second was

even better. He found space before applying a tidy piece of finishing.

Crawley's sixth goal in only two games this season. Unfortunately for

the Reds come about letting sex as well and the momentum swung to

Cheltenham. He kept his composure to beat Jones at the second attempt. --

left in six. The comeback was completed in extra time, Cheltenham

heading into the second round for the first time in five years

Peterborough United in red have a wonderful recent record in this

competition. Four goals in each of their last four first-round matches

and scored another by half-time here. Two minutes into the second

half, it was 1-1. After that, it was all about Peterborough. They went

one better than their previous first-round victories. Danny Kaye's

precise cross on the back post. 2-1 after one hour. Ten minutes later,

it was 3-1 when Lee Tomlin passed to Tommy Rowe and the game was as good

as over. If Peterborough had a fine record in early rounds of the league

cup, Lee Tomlin made it 4-13 minutes later. He scored four goals and five
