Good evening. The FA women's's Super League is back and bigger than -- | :00:42. | :00:51.
and better than ever. Nine teams are in the top flight. | :00:52. | :01:36.
Nine. I am delighted to be joined by my guess too will cast a neutral and | :01:37. | :01:49.
analytical eye over the proceedings tonight. We will bring you | :01:50. | :01:53.
information about all the fixtures but we begin with Chelsea who faced | :01:54. | :02:02.
a club reborn in recent years, Don Caster Rovers Belles. After their | :02:03. | :02:06.
blueprint for the future failed to meet the criteria for the future, | :02:07. | :02:11.
their application was denied by the FA and they were subsequently | :02:12. | :02:13.
relegated after a 22 year stay in the top flight -- Doncaster. One of | :02:14. | :02:23.
the game's most famous names is back and they have signalled their | :02:24. | :02:27.
intent. The first dedicated women's training facility at an elite level | :02:28. | :02:32.
in the UK will hopefully lead to ambitious signings. Chelsea's | :02:33. | :02:37.
blueprint for success came to fruition last season but can the | :02:38. | :02:46.
newly promoted team keep it up? This is the moment that Doncaster fought | :02:47. | :02:54.
so hard for last season. To bring top-flight women's football back to | :02:55. | :03:01.
the stadium. No need for motivation for Doncaster tonight, they have | :03:02. | :03:11.
been busy recruiting. Another title winner at midfield. 17-year-old | :03:12. | :03:21.
Samantha Tierney is in there is well and Chelsea has much depth and | :03:22. | :03:28.
quality to their squad. Claire Rafferty is back in the top four. | :03:29. | :03:34.
They include two former Doncaster players. Bath England makes her full | :03:35. | :03:54.
Chelsea debut having just left. -- Beth. | :03:55. | :04:06.
The England international summits that. Very difficult to catch up. -- | :04:07. | :04:16.
thumped. England are bright on the run. That is a penalty. Milly Bright | :04:17. | :04:26.
fouled and the challenge was not timed well. Chelsea penalty. The new | :04:27. | :04:34.
girl will take the free kick. Can she replicate her late success? And | :04:35. | :04:43.
she can. It has taken them over 12 minutes but Chelsea are now in | :04:44. | :04:50.
front. It is really important for Karen Carney to make a good start, | :04:51. | :04:55.
for her confidence levels. And she has. That caused confusion and | :04:56. | :05:15.
ultimately an own goal. Doncaster Belles our level. Rafferty was well | :05:16. | :05:22.
aware of that and she knew that if she missed it, it would be an easy | :05:23. | :05:28.
one. Doncaster Belles have got themselves back in the game. A | :05:29. | :05:42.
lovely ball from Chapman. Well watched by Robert. Beth England with | :05:43. | :05:58.
the header, would you believe that? Her debut for Chelsea against the | :05:59. | :06:02.
club she has only just left and she scores against them to restore | :06:03. | :06:26.
Chelsea's lead. Chelsea corner and it was a bit deeper this time. Katie | :06:27. | :06:31.
Chapman has added Chelsea's third, just before halftime. The captain | :06:32. | :06:52.
has made it 3-1. Chapman seems to be getting beyond centre-forward. | :06:53. | :07:16.
Deflected along the way. Beautifully done. Virtually cleared off the line | :07:17. | :07:22.
by Barker. She almost passed out into the net. A good safe in the end | :07:23. | :07:46.
from Hobbes. A lovely goal and the goal to seal it once and for all for | :07:47. | :07:50.
Chelsea and to make sure the champions are beginning their | :07:51. | :07:53.
defence of the title with three points. That was Aluko. Format goals | :07:54. | :08:01.
in the opening game and you have seen how difficult it is for teams | :08:02. | :08:04.
to get many goals in the opener. I thought it was a good effort from | :08:05. | :08:12.
us. The timing of Katie's goal was crucial. Absolutely. I thought we | :08:13. | :08:16.
played really well and moved the ball well and created opportunities. | :08:17. | :08:21.
We have world-class headers, so I am not surprised. World-class headers | :08:22. | :08:28.
and players in that side. Did that play out in the end? I think Chelsea | :08:29. | :08:36.
had the majority of the possession. It really meant the difference | :08:37. | :08:40.
between the two sides. We are now going to look at the goals. The | :08:41. | :08:44.
delivery is fantastic but the movement from Chelsea... First of | :08:45. | :08:52.
all, Doncaster Belles are outnumbered. Four Chelsea players | :08:53. | :08:55.
branched out and scattered and lost their markers. They should have been | :08:56. | :09:05.
looking at that. Beth England made a wonderful header and put it in the | :09:06. | :09:12.
back of the net. The second goal, second set piece, again Chelsea | :09:13. | :09:15.
players with great movement, peeling off and causing havoc in the area. | :09:16. | :09:20.
Doncaster Belles just can't pick it up. For goodness sake, Chelsea | :09:21. | :09:26.
already had top-quality players last year. They won everything and then | :09:27. | :09:32.
they go and throw another world-class player in Karen Carney | :09:33. | :09:35.
into the mix. Their frontline is very scary. Karen Carney was at the | :09:36. | :09:42.
World Cup in the summer and she was phenomenal. She was the heartbeat | :09:43. | :09:48.
tonight right from the very start. Not only is she really agile with | :09:49. | :09:51.
very quick feet, she lays the ball with such quality. Sometimes she | :09:52. | :09:59.
plays it first and sometimes she moves it out into space. She really | :10:00. | :10:05.
makes everything kick for Chelsea. It looks like she has been there for | :10:06. | :10:10.
the whole season. She was absolutely phenomenal and if you look across, | :10:11. | :10:15.
when Karen Carney is coming up, Gemma Davidson -- Davison has | :10:16. | :10:27.
excellent pace. This goal epitomizes the quality that Chelsea have got. A | :10:28. | :10:35.
phenomenal finish from Aluko into the bottom corner. They will be fun | :10:36. | :10:40.
to watch again this season but what about Doncaster Belles? Lovers of | :10:41. | :10:47.
the women's game are glad to see them in the top-flight. We know why | :10:48. | :10:50.
they were relegated but they are back now. What they are in | :10:51. | :10:54.
administration, run by people who have to know how to make the club | :10:55. | :10:58.
work now. A very exciting prospect for the future with eight full-time | :10:59. | :11:02.
players now. Everything about them now and epitomizes the professional | :11:03. | :11:08.
outlook that they have and it is apt that they have named their new | :11:09. | :11:13.
facility the Phoenix. Now they don't have a game for a month and not | :11:14. | :11:17.
another home game for two months with Chelsea having six and a half | :11:18. | :11:21.
weeks without a game between fixtures. What do you make of that? | :11:22. | :11:25.
It is difficult for any team to generate momentum. They may be | :11:26. | :11:31.
looking at expanding the league. Who knows. Many restraints. Next to the | :11:32. | :11:39.
other newly promoted side, Reading who began life in the top-flight | :11:40. | :11:42.
with a daunting trip to Arsenal. Who would emerge with the winning hand? | :11:43. | :11:51.
For over a decade, Arsenal Ladies were the queens of English football. | :11:52. | :11:57.
Crowned champions on an incredible 11 occasions. It has been three | :11:58. | :12:00.
years since her last coronation but with a host of new signings, they | :12:01. | :12:04.
were hoping to lay down an early marker against Reading. But they | :12:05. | :12:09.
still managed to achieve promotion last season. Casting his eye over | :12:10. | :12:21.
this one is our commentator. Reading's introduction promises to | :12:22. | :12:24.
be challenging. Arsenal have been busy in the winter. Many of the | :12:25. | :12:39.
Redding team are experiencing top-flight football for the first | :12:40. | :12:52.
time. Many former Arsenal players make up their squad. Just too high | :12:53. | :13:09.
this time. But Redding will need to defend better than that -- Reading. | :13:10. | :13:27.
Arsenal have their first goal of the season! A fine individual effort by | :13:28. | :13:53.
Dominic Janssen. That is a good ball, terrific -- Dominique. So | :13:54. | :14:00.
unlucky! What a debut that would have been for Oshoala, inches away. | :14:01. | :14:15.
Arsenal dominated the opening 45 minutes but they do need the second | :14:16. | :14:24.
goal. Williamson has been a fabulous defender this evening. Oshoala again | :14:25. | :14:38.
be on the goalkeeper, and she has her debut goal this time! Denied by | :14:39. | :14:47.
the woodwork in the first half. Once again, Oshoala with a wonderful | :14:48. | :14:55.
first touch to go beyond Grace Maloney and give the Arsenal fans a | :14:56. | :14:57.
glimpse of what she could be capable of. -- Moloney. And they are back in | :14:58. | :15:23.
the game again, that was a real gift. Williamson was caught out | :15:24. | :15:43.
there. A brave finish. From a position of relative comfort, | :15:44. | :15:45.
Arsenal are in a contest once again. A brilliant save from | :15:46. | :16:00.
Moloney. Two of Arsenal's new signings combining superbly but the | :16:01. | :16:06.
save was even better. Scott has done well. We know Williams can hit | :16:07. | :16:16.
them. And this time it was deflected wide from the corner. And that | :16:17. | :16:34.
should be enough to seal Arsenal's opening-day win with that goal from | :16:35. | :16:38.
Carter. Relief finally from the coach. Danielle Carter rising | :16:39. | :16:47.
highest. Reading have been brave but Arsenal are just too good. A word on | :16:48. | :16:53.
the new players. How much did your new signings impress you? The main | :16:54. | :17:00.
point is to bring good characters who can represent the values of the | :17:01. | :17:04.
club. New layers who can learn from those values. We have a fantastic | :17:05. | :17:10.
group with the fantastic vibe. They have worked hard from the first | :17:11. | :17:14.
day, on and off the pitch. Sometimes when you come to a new team, you | :17:15. | :17:18.
have to learn how to play with your teammates and couple of times I was | :17:19. | :17:28.
still learning. I think we gave them a good game. There are things we | :17:29. | :17:36.
need to tighten up and conceding 25-30 seconds in the second half | :17:37. | :17:41.
didn't help. The newly promoted side did well for long periods in that | :17:42. | :17:47.
game. How do you assess them? Reading certainly frustrated Arsenal | :17:48. | :17:50.
and that was a good tactic. I think what they did very well was they got | :17:51. | :17:56.
bodies behind the ball, they made sure that Arsenal couldn't have any | :17:57. | :18:02.
time on the ball. Any time they were in possession, they got bodies | :18:03. | :18:07.
around and hustled them. But in the end they started to fade a little | :18:08. | :18:13.
bit. But I think the game that Kelly Chambers employed was a good | :18:14. | :18:21.
tactic. They had possession with purpose. But the quality showed. For | :18:22. | :18:35.
me, Dominique Janssen with fantastic. The goalkeeper should | :18:36. | :18:38.
have done better. It was a good quality header from Danielle | :18:39. | :18:46.
Carter. The young Nigerian striker is a big signing from Liverpool. | :18:47. | :18:50.
They had a difficult time last season. They had finished as | :18:51. | :18:57.
back-to-back champions before. What did you make of her? She didn't gel | :18:58. | :19:04.
particularly well in Liverpool. She started out this game a little bit | :19:05. | :19:10.
erratic. You could tell she hadn't quite found her teammates yet. She | :19:11. | :19:17.
wasn't necessarily gelling. But she grew into this game and we saw at 30 | :19:18. | :19:23.
-40 minutes that she was in the thick of things. She was the target | :19:24. | :19:27.
player and this touch with fantastic. It was unlucky to hit the | :19:28. | :19:34.
post. A great save, she is a good target layer to have and she is most | :19:35. | :19:39.
effective as a central player. A good little touch around the | :19:40. | :19:42.
goalkeeper who committed early from me. A great finish and a good solid | :19:43. | :19:48.
acquisition for Arsenal, no doubt. You talked about your team to watch | :19:49. | :20:04.
this season, how did you rate the performance of Leo Williamson? -- | :20:05. | :20:16.
Leah. She put in excellent block tackles. This is how the coach wants | :20:17. | :20:23.
Arsenal to play, he wants them to be composed from the back and forth | :20:24. | :20:26.
attacks to start right from the goalkeeper and the sender has. She | :20:27. | :20:30.
has really good quality, but that is what happened, sometimes when they | :20:31. | :20:46.
play in the centre-halves. Let me highlight Janssen, she dropped in to | :20:47. | :20:52.
protect Williamson on that lead to Reading getting a consolation goal. | :20:53. | :20:56.
You can see that she was very frustrated and it remains to be seen | :20:57. | :21:01.
whether she will retain that position. We talked about Jodie | :21:02. | :21:16.
Taylor. A top England striker. Phenomenal. This shot here | :21:17. | :21:20.
definitely takes it. It is beyond my reach. Jodie Taylor can score from | :21:21. | :21:27.
anywhere outside the box. Her coach knows her very well from the time | :21:28. | :21:34.
she spent in the USA. Fantastic signing for Arsenal and for the | :21:35. | :21:39.
league. Two more games to catch up on starting with last season's | :21:40. | :21:43.
runners-up, Manchester City who added significant firepower to their | :21:44. | :21:47.
squad and aim to go one better this time around. It was the night of few | :21:48. | :22:02.
clear-cut chances. A slow start hampered Manchester City last season | :22:03. | :22:05.
and it looked like the same thing this time around. Despite 12 goals | :22:06. | :22:13.
last season, they couldn't get into account here. Well wide. Manchester | :22:14. | :22:19.
City began to grow into the game after that and were given the | :22:20. | :22:21.
perfect chance to go in front with this one. Referee Johnson once again | :22:22. | :22:27.
pointed to the spot to even up the penalty count. The England | :22:28. | :22:34.
international couldn't find a way around the goalkeeper. But she had | :22:35. | :22:38.
no answer to this one in injury time. 1-0 was the final score. I | :22:39. | :22:50.
think the most important thing is that we got the three points and now | :22:51. | :22:54.
we will build on this and recover and focus on Arsenal. Having been | :22:55. | :23:00.
knocked out of the FA Cup this weekend, Liverpool kicked off their | :23:01. | :23:08.
new campaign against Birmingham. The referee had no hesitation in | :23:09. | :23:12.
awarding this penalty. But Siobhan Chamberlain came to the rescue. The | :23:13. | :23:22.
2013 - 2014 champions punished the Blues. This one was bungled home | :23:23. | :23:35.
despite a desperate lunge. The Blues weren't going to give up though. The | :23:36. | :23:42.
Dutch defender was deemed to have missed the ball by the referee and a | :23:43. | :23:45.
second penalty of the night was awarded with a straight red card. | :23:46. | :23:54.
Incredibly the free kick was wide of the target. Not a single one was | :23:55. | :24:02.
scored. Birmingham closed the game strongly. But Chamberlain was in no | :24:03. | :24:12.
mood to be charitable as Liverpool claimed all three points. There were | :24:13. | :24:18.
some decisions where... The politest way of putting it is that they were | :24:19. | :24:23.
controversial. I think we were under a lot of pressure because of that. | :24:24. | :24:27.
The girls were superb. Can't fault them. A winning start for Liverpool. | :24:28. | :24:36.
Extremely early days, of course, but you know you like to see a table | :24:37. | :24:40.
even at this stage. Chelsea are sitting at the top after all of one | :24:41. | :24:43.
game but because of the odd numbers in the league this season, due to | :24:44. | :24:47.
the expansion, one team will always have to sit out of certain fixtures. | :24:48. | :24:51.
This time it was Sunderland, they won't play until Saturday when they | :24:52. | :24:57.
are at home to Reading. Birmingham's last season was a | :24:58. | :25:04.
struggle to score goals. You get to penalties and don't score either | :25:05. | :25:07.
them, starting in a similar fashion. Same old problem. We were hoping for | :25:08. | :25:15.
goals from players brought in from Arsenal but it didn't happen. Is it | :25:16. | :25:20.
potentially a recipe for relegation? I am not sure but they need to start | :25:21. | :25:23.
putting the ball in the back of the net if they want to give themselves | :25:24. | :25:28.
a chance. They lost key players. Karen Carney has gone to Chelsea. | :25:29. | :25:36.
Becky Spencer has also. And Weston has also gone. They're talking about | :25:37. | :25:41.
having to bring players through. Can you do that and survive? That is on | :25:42. | :25:45.
the back of also losing key players last season. They have hemorrhaged | :25:46. | :25:49.
layers and are now relying on the use players coming through -- young | :25:50. | :26:03.
players. Manchester City also added to their squad, they have already | :26:04. | :26:08.
got talent in the front with the likes of Paris. They are relying on | :26:09. | :26:16.
the sender have to score a goal at the last minute. They will always | :26:17. | :26:26.
love to have the glory. Manchester City, I don't think I got the depth | :26:27. | :26:32.
at the moment. They have only got 13 seeded players who are fully fit. | :26:33. | :26:37.
That will be a worry for their title contentions but it is early days | :26:38. | :26:40.
yet. Some injuries they could probably have done without at this | :26:41. | :26:46.
stage. Two of last season's strugglers produced some of the most | :26:47. | :26:49.
entertaining games of the week. Watford trailed London with just two | :26:50. | :26:57.
minutes remaining. Goals from Charlotte Kerr and Molly Burgess, | :26:58. | :27:04.
securing the equaliser. That came in the 93rd minute. So the WSL 2 table | :27:05. | :27:18.
looks like this. Millwall makes a winning start. What do you reckon? | :27:19. | :27:34.
Who is likely to be going up? One team will be relegated, but my two | :27:35. | :27:39.
teens who I think we'll be going up this season are Bristol city, who | :27:40. | :27:44.
were relegated last season and perhaps Watford -- City. Why? | :27:45. | :27:56.
Actually Everton. They have managed to hold onto some key players with | :27:57. | :28:01.
really bright futures. I think they have got goals in them as well. They | :28:02. | :28:07.
have added to their squad and brought in the goalkeeper from | :28:08. | :28:09.
Manchester City and I think that is a good move for her and for ever ten | :28:10. | :28:18.
as well. -- Everton. That is pretty much all we have time for tonight | :28:19. | :28:23.
that we will be back on Tuesday with more highlights, including an | :28:24. | :28:27.
early-season battle between two title contenders as Manchester City | :28:28. | :28:36.
host Arsenal. Thank you, it has been an absolute pleasure is always. The | :28:37. | :28:39.
champions Chelsea flew out of the stall to claim an opening win at | :28:40. | :28:45.
Doncaster. Goodbye. | :28:46. | :29:01. |
