Second Round: Part 2 UK Snooker Championship Extra

Hello again. The last swathe of second-round matches here in

yourYork Barbican was Ding Junhui, with that fantastic run to the final

in May, which was watched at home by 210 million people in China. No

pressure, but here in York, he only just scraped through the opening

round, and today he was up against another outsider, 21-year-old Ross

Muir from Musselburgh. He was not going to be overawed. He has a

memory of having beaten Ding Junhui in a Asian tour event. What with

this much hold for us? It is a best of 11 and is being watched by our

commentators. -- this match. Ding Junhui won the toss and he

breaks. Very elegant. A bit of check going on. Will he be picking a check

up at the end of the tournament? That is the question. Very smart,

though. I like it. Absolutely. Without doubt one of the greatest

players in the game, and looking snazzy as well. Only a few hours ago

we were sitting in this commentary box on this very table watching five

centuries in six frames. Will we get anything like that ever again? My

first time watching young Ross Muir from Musselburgh near Edinburgh. A

lovely part of the world. Playing with a glove on. That takes me back.

Let's pick worth back in the mid- 70s used to wear a glove -- Lance

Pickworth. When we used to go to Thailand and it was very damp and

the air conditioning needed to be on all the time, it was sticky and I

could understand there. I don't understand why you might need them

in this country, but Hume asked -- he must have sweaty hands. Just

talking about the great Joe Davis wearing a glove in the finals, and

he was really struggling. He should try a boxing glove, they said. I

remember it well. It was funny for everybody else, not Lance. Ross with

a little offer here. No easy safety shot. He might be tempted to take

the pot on. Not the worst of kisses, but can he

put the green in without touching the yellow. Get up to the reds just

above the black. Will that be hard enough? It certainly is. It is

perfect. The table is playing so quick, but it really is beautiful to

play on. As Willie said, Fergal O'Brien with one of the finest

displays I have ever seen. On this table last evening.

I love watching Ding Junhui brake built. He really is superb. -- break

build. APPLAUSE

He break builds the same way Henry and O'Sullivan do, a lot of the

great players. Higgins as well. Fantastic, but sometimes they use

the white gamut of it. When Ding Junhui is in full control, just

wonderful to watch. Once again talking about the match

last night, the cue ball control in this, I don't think you went in and

out in any of the five centuries he may. Absolutely pinpoint. -- he

made. And that takes some doing on these very fast clubs, but when you

are queueing up well, it is nice, but when you are struggling a bit,

they catch you out -- cueing. Keeps very still on the shot, does Ding

Junhui. Didn't want that keys. He might be

OK if he goes to the left of the middle pocket. No problem. Not

hampered at all -- kiss. You could see him hit the cue ball with a bit

of left-hand side just to swing it off the question towards the black.

-- cushion. Try to avoid the kiss and go through

the gap of those two. This is not a certainty, he is 50 points in front

so not past the winning line yet. Difficult when you are this close.

No problem for Ding Junhui. Excellent shot.

APPLAUSE Did not hit that hard enough, but

the white keeps on rolling. He still has a possible chance, but he wants

to get further around. A little triangle of reds and one point of

that was available, but he can still get through to this one. You can see

that other red that is available, to reds. He can play for but this time.

-- play for that. Just a matter of whether he can go

on to make a century break. Always a great way to start if you can do

that. Something that Steve Davis did on many occasions throughout the

80s, and Stephen Hendry. Throughout the 90s, always off to a quick

start. APPLAUSE

He is going to leave the tricky red along the cushion if he is to make a

century. Not as tricky as it was before, but

still needs a good shot. What a... I thought it was going to

drop. No century break, but what a great start from Ding Junhui. One

chance and that was all he needed. He takes the opening frame and lead

1-0. A little bit of a confidence booster

if you can not batting. He does not have to play for the blue. He can

run through the safety and only be on the green -- knock that in.

APPLAUSE That is a little beauty he has

pulled back there, and he is on the growing. Not a lot of reds

available, but the one to the right of the pink. To need the blackspot

are available. -- two near the blackspot. A good kiss here, he

needs. He has not had it. A little bit of a confidence booster for Ross

Muir. Could have been better with the

safety shot there. Always have to keep the object ball safe, and he

hasn't. This one part in. -- cut in. The three reds around the blackspot

area are not available to the red corner, so the Brown is on. May have

to go of the side cushion and play the one near the blackspot.

That is a couple of cracking long balls he has knocked in. But he

hasn't really had a proper chance in amongst the balls. Even this shot is

not straightforward to get a good position.

He is looking at playing... APPLAUSE

All of those reds are covering each other. In both corner pockets, even

those around the pink spot. It is a little bit awkward. Any sort of

Canon might have that situation here. Getting a slightly longer

extension -- cannon. Ding Junhui holding his hand up to

say that was lucky because he hit the wrong ball first he wanted to do

the pot in the middle, but it still went in.

Everything seems to be covered up down the right-hand side of the

table. You can't see the red, near the pink. It is available. But I

can't see the ball. He may be tempted to take this on. He can run

on and off the top cushion and try to get Brown from grain, but you

would have to do this so well to generate the topspin. -- green.

Clearly the side that was far too risky. He will be a little bit

disappointed. He has been in the balls twice in this frame, and yet

to hit any sizeable break. A bad miss. It might knock his confidence

a bit. Swing the cue ball in between black and blue off the two cushions.

Might get somewhere near the yellow. A bit too thin. A little too thin.

It depends if he has a bit of angle on the green. He might take it on.

If not, there is not a lot of value. Just roll to the yellow.

There is a path back down the table, but it is a tricky one. The left

side of the table, if he plays off one of these reds, he needs to make

sure he does not cannon on the way back down the table. He has to be

very precise with this. Played it well. Doesn't want the

white in the pocket. APPLAUSE

It is Ding Junhui's time to play a poor shot. Hit that too thick. The

first real chance for Ross Muir. He has reds in play. His last visit,

the reds were tied up. Now we will see how he is feeling. It is nice if

you can get the black bag onto its spot. A good chance of winning the

frame here. -- back. Just looking at Ross Muir's stance,

the old traditional stance with one foot forward. The back leg dead

straight as most players do, but they are square on, a lot of modern

players. But this is the traditional stance. Perfect to action, really.

Has to be careful he does not make contact with the yellow. That is a

natural angle with these four reds available in the corner. He needs a

bit of luck and I think he has it. I think he has played bass to

perfection. Well done. APPLAUSE

-- this. The black is on, but not really any

good unless you can play for the red directly behind the blackspot. That

is why he is looking at the blue. Probably come back the weight you

mention. There were four reds available into the white Connor, a

little margin for error here. -- corner. He has hit it too hard.

Anywhere between the middle pocket and sort of in-line with the pink

spot, and she was perfect on all four reds. This table is so quick it

can catch you out. Not the best safety again, so maybe

a bit of inexperience. He should have tied things up much better than

this. Ding Junhui's usually pretty good at that type of shot. The

safety shot has worked to Ross Muir's advantage.

Every chance now to take the second frame.

APPLAUSE. You might say that Ross was a bit

unlucky to draw Ding. He beat Ross in the qualifying match.

Drop out of the top 16 and you have to play a qualifying round to get

through to Sheffield. This is a pretty good performance here. Just

the black to make absolutely sure of the frame.

It's amazing he has won this frame with a high break of only 22. It's

all been bits and pieces. If he's going to go on to win this match, he

is going to have to begin to score really heavily. He looked in control

of his emotions at the moment. As you would expect all the players

on the main tour are capable of playing very well. We have seen

enough in this frame alone that Ross can play. Haven't had the pleasure

of seeing it before to be honest. Good point. I think we see on BBC

television how difficult it is that they are playing that many matches

now that it doesn't come into effect as much as it

APPLAUSE. Bello undoubtedly, he will settle in greatly now that he has a

foothold in the match. Far enough to take Ross into level

parity of 1-1. Keep saying how well the tables are

playing. Players were struggling a couple of seasons ago. It was

skidding off the cushions. What another confidence booster this will

be. Another test of the queue action. He

will be left with a difficult rate along the cushion. Need to queue

these smoothly. -- cue. If he knocks the scene, he can give himself quite

an opportunity here. At that pace, if you put them on in

the near side, they won't go win. -- this is a free shot at Ford --

free shot for Ding. A slight angle so he is OK to get on the two reds.

Is all these top players do, they get them into open play, get them

into the bunch early. Unfortunately for him, obviously not. What a

killer. Very tough. It the middle of the

three reds in the middle of the table.

That was a good shot. This looks excellent.

Doesn't get much better than that. APPLAUSE

The fact that the Reds are spread around. He will have to give this a

little bit of thought. He is hoping to leave the white in the jaws of

this corner pocket. It's a thin one that he can sneak

the one in that is closest to the blue. Far from easy, this.

A bit unlucky to finish close to the cushion because the yellow was

always available to him. He can still pot the yellow but can he

ignore the brown? A little bit of left-hand side is needed because he

is close to the cushion. Bit unlucky to finish so close to

the cushion of there. There is a bit of a shot of nothing

here for Ding. He has hit a couple of them on the thick side. They are

always going to stick to read up if you do that. -- red. A reasonable

chance for Ross here. The safety hasn't been good. He's a

few pots by quite a considerable margin. He isn't going to get many

chances if he continues doing that. Can he make this one count?

Maybe he still has a slight angle. He wanted a bitter bangle. Amazing

on bees lively -- better angle. -- amazing on these lively cloths. He

may have to head up towards yellow or green here.

It just means he has a long way to travel after potting the yellow.

That is a disappointing end to that effort. He had a great chance to go

and take the frame. Has to be careful with this. Whether

brownies, he will need the brown. I thought he looked a bit all at sea.

That was a golden opportunity for Ding there. Can Ross knock this

right in? I'm sure he wasn't expecting to come

back to the table as quickly as this so can he take full advantage of

now? APPLAUSE.

Can only presume he had played a lot of side there. It is still at a

ball. -- cuttable. It should have been easier than this. Not sure if

this is an easy cut on the green or not.

The green and the red to the left of the pink will be enough. That's

about perfect. Very good position. Dead straight, almost on the red. As

a -- he has our quick look at the scoreboard just to make sure.

Ross must be delighted. He knew that Ding started off well. He has missed

quite a few since then. Switching hands. Maybe not.

Looking at bit concerned for Ding's fans at the moment. He has to go out

and do it and at the moment, he is not doing it. Sometimes he gets a

little bit down on himself when he misses shots he should not miss. His

body language is much that are now. He used to get swamped over in his

chair. -- slumped. Very nicely played from Ross.

Doesn't matter even if the white goes in which it doesn't. He will be

delighted, Ross. He had a 47 break in the previous frame and had just

had another 40 break and now he leads Ding Junhui.

There are are all sorts here. Will he pot the red?

That was the red he was always going to catch. The one next to the pink

will go. Straightaway he has left himself the

wrong angle on the pink to get to that. He was hoping to play onto the

one to the right but his first shot wasn't the best. Should be OK going

back. It's as if his focus is not quite there.

No disrespect to Ross Muir and his playing Betty Beazley went into this

match thinking he would have it his way. -- but he obviously.

If Ding Junhui get his confidence again... He may have missed the boat

when he should have come out 3-1. It will be difficult for him now to win

this match. You can see two reads that are

freely available. . -- reds. Already 59 ahead. It wobbled a bit

but it is safely in. Just one more red needed.

APPLAUSE. Oh, that kicked. 57 and had with

still 67 on the table. As you can see, he needs five reds

and five blacks to tie. That is pretty good.

APPLAUSE. You need to make sure you get the

right angle on the red to get back to the black. He should play for the

one on the cushion this time because he has a perfect angle to get on it.

Slowly but surely getting himself back into the frame.

That is a poor shot. He had a chance to get the black, Ross Muir, but

that was the tricky one that he played for first.

He certainly looks sharper after the midsession interval. 59 paved the

way for the frame. He got a kick and Ross Muir had a chance, but he did

not take it. Ding Junhui leads 3-2 frames.

Ross Muir will now be a little disappointed. It has swung the other

way now from him, it could have been pre-1, but he now trails 3-2 --

could have been 3-1. Need to be careful with the safety

shot he does not get a double kiss. Did it nicely. Where is the red

going? He needs the brown to come to his rescue.

He will have to queue this one well. -- cue.

When you have the butt of the cue in the air in striking down on a shot

like that, it is so difficult, but once again, he has been a bit

unlucky in the one he tried to pot. It came right over the middle of the

middle pocket. He would like to get the red away to

the left, but he doesn't have the angle to get onto it this time, so a

change of plan. He will make some sort of a Cannon Hill. -- Canning

here. He would just hit them hard and hope the best. He has done. That

has worked out pretty well. Might be able to just scrape between the reds

and leave the pink for the same pocket as the red. He can run

through and leave it for the middle. His choice. Just wondering if the

pink will be tied somewhat when it goes back onto its spot. He has a

little bit of what to do before it is a good chance here. He can get

onto that red. As you suggested, he needs to get rid of it, between the

red and the black. Get rid of the red and the black into both pockets.

With the risk, I think. But he is not playing at. Going for topspin,

so going for one of the blues reds at the top of the table. -- loose

reds. Might be the pink is available. He

is looking long and hard at it to see if it goes into the right

corner. We will find out shortly when he plays the shot. If the pink

doesn't work he can play through for the blue.

It is a bit tight. It looks like it will go there, but just a wee bit

tired. That is why he decided on the blue. -- tight.

Just about OK. But still not straightforward just yet. He has the

pink, but a little bit to do with the cue ball just to get back on

that this red. Maybe just nudge another red. He has played that

nicely. The black when to go in the left corner, that is right at some

stage he needs to get on that red. -- that is why. Not sure about it.

He is dead straight, so he can't. Getting on the next red will be very

difficult. There is no problem with the red and pink. But the red after

that, virtually straight on this pink, just go off like the cushion

and get the ball somewhere near the black is. He may plan to leave it

where it is now and cut on the question, but he could screw back

and get on the red. He may think that is too risky. Anywhere if he is

now is not too bad. He has gone for the gap. Has he got the gap? What a

great shot that is. Well done. If anything, he just over Scrooge

that slightly and may have to play the blue, looking at the cut on this

red -- overscrewed. A key shot coming up, if he can pot the blue

income passed the pink and cannon the red. He does and what hit the

corner pocket. This is the key shot, too many going on to take the frame

-- and come past the pink. Not quite. He will have to wait for

another opportunity. Very difficult to return the cue

ball back down if he plays the red behind the pink. He will catch one

of the reds on the right side of the table. Whereas on the other side, he

has defined the gap as well. -- to find. In the end, that was all he

could do, just roll up to the red, and they were not many choices for

him there. Schoolboy error. Massive target to

miss the blueberry, a whole foot of table. He could have gone straight

for eight safety shot -- Pulu there. He has been concentrating on the cue

ball not the object ball. He has to be careful. He has brought it back

into the middle of the table. Good shot. Excellent shot.

But after missing and giving four points away rather than hitting the

red on the thick side. Let's see if he can make the adjustment and just

catch it, as he intends to. Amazing when you miss a ball the

first time, this red will cut. It depends which way he fancies going

with the cue ball. Planning to cut it into the left-hand corner. The

cue ball is going very close to the yellow pocket. Have to be careful

where the cue ball is travelling. Far too thick.

Just be a little bit cautious with this shot at the moment, I think.

Well. He will be very disappointed to miss that.

I don't think that red next to the pink goes. If it does, easy. If not,

a cannon. Past the pin to the middle. It must be quite tight. --

pink. Plenty of room! Oh, kick. That was a

bad kick. Just as he was about to clinch the frame, he gets a heavy

contact. Yeah, just straightened up a little

bit. Very tough to get it right back in

the frame from here, they just make sure you get 20 or 30 here and get

close to him. Just looked like he could get onto the back and bring a

red into play. He wants to be straight on this red. Decided he

could not get onto the red three away from the black. Did that well,

though. No problem with a choice of pink or black. He would like to

bring those very red into play. -- three reds. He would be relying on

luck to come onto them with this shot. What do you think?

He did have the angle to play the cannon, but as you can see, the

tables are so fast. He has two pot this black and go in between green

and brown for the red on the left-hand side of the table.

He is just struggling to get in a good position. When you are not at

the top of your form on these very fast tables, it is difficult to

control the cue ball. I don't know if he can get down

behind the blue, just as if you were playing a cannon onto the blue. Both

behind the yellow, which is just as good -- just over behind. I'm

surprised Ding Junhui baby last shot the way he did. -- played. He would

rather missed the ball then get it on the thick attempt. He does not

want to miss bringing those three reds into play. Just virtually near

missing it, but caught it. Ross Muir can win this from Bishop. No worry

is where the bike is. Even if he pushes the red over the side, he can

push it. Try to get the white in the jaws of the green pocket. Just get

the cue ball somewhere near the green and bring all three reds into

play. He played the thin one. I think you missed a trick. He could

have got them all into play. A very poor shot.

53 ahead and just 51 on the table. 4-2.

Just living away from him, Ross Muir. He has been involved in the

frame every chance, so any had himself to blame if he loses this

match. He will have gained a fabulous amount of experience

playing one of the top players on the TV table.

Ding Junhui slowly but surely getting his cue action back on the

table. He lost it in frames three and four.

He started this frame with a break of 45 and will finish it with a

break of 46. In it goes the back, and Ding Junhui is getting in

control of this match now, going to play and leading 4-2. -- going two

clear. Clearly available, and as we

thought, his choice of the pink. You would like the pink to go back on

the black spot, but can't quite see from here when the pink spot is

available. Already getting that ball marker out, so it must be pretty

tight. Just one more good positional shot

needed from Ross Muir to make the black and little easier. Straight on

this red in the middle. Otherwise he will have to play a cannon of some

sort. He is certainly not straight. He played that nicely. The pink will

obviously go back onto its own spot now, so has to be a little careful

where the next red is coming from. At first glance, I can't see a

straightforward way of getting onto a red, actually. Virtually straight

on this pink, and he can only screw back and run to it. There must be 12

pot somewhere, but from this position, I can't see where. -- one

he can pot. He will have to play a difficult one in the middle. Looking

at the angle, he might be able to just roll beast in the middle and

cannon the other red and leave it there and be on the back -- black or

beeping. Maybe he is not as nicely on that red. It looks as if it is.

It's not quite on an acute angle. 54 in front, so he doesn't want to just

attempt something that he doesn't fancy and put Ding Junhui in.

Just wondering if Ding Junhui will take this along the question. The

crews he can take the pink. His 54 behind and had a look at it -- along

the cushion. He is looking at it again. If this goes in at that

angle, leave the pink for the middle pocket. But now he is digging right

into it. He did not plan to pot back, he just wanted to draw that

and send the red up the table. -- pot that.

A bit dangerous to play that pot. What Ding to do is bring a little

bit of reds into play. He may be able to bring one or two into play.

This too reds are now open that he has left a pot. Two more reds he

needs to make the frame safe. Now that he has missed it, there is

enough there for Ding Junhui. When knew this far behind, you tend to

concentrate a lot harder. His focus hasn't been 100% this

afternoon in this match. He looked good in spells but has missed

relatively easy shots so can he make a clearance when it's needed to shut

out the match? I wouldn't be surprised.

APPLAUSE. Can he open the red away from the black? Until then, a little

awkward. As he said, a tall order. All the

reds are in play that you just have to get the white in among them.

He has come up a little bit short on the blue. The red on the right is

not available. It's not the ideal position just yet.

He needs to be dead straight on this rate. He is absolutely dead

straight. A good chance after this goes in.

APPLAUSE. He has got an angle now to develop the red and the black. He

just needs a little gentle nudge. They are there for the taking now.

That's what we were talking about. Just one shot away from making it a

frame. That was the one shot just there.

It's all about experience, isn't it, for a young player like Ross. He did

very well at the beginning. He has had chances.

If you are in Ross's corner, what would you take away from the match

as it has gone so far? Mind you, that could be the end of break. It

is the end of break. Well, that is amazing. Absolutely amazing. They

were all there for the taking and suddenly with a little cannon, he

has messed it up. What I would be saying to Ross was, listen, you are

not out of this match yet. LAUGHS. Amazing. That was just

purely careless. He just needed to kiss and a half ball that he bent

down and kissed the red. APPLAUSE.

Well, another chance. Another chance for Ding.

He has played another poor shot. He is going to have to take the green

if he is going to win the match at this visit. That was a poor

positional shot that Ding Junhui played there.

Amazing, isn't it? This top players when they see the winning post, they

go by very, very quickly to stop its interesting to see his track record

in the UK over the last couple of whistlestop he has lost to play up

at the top 64. He is not over the line yet in this match.

It's amazing, he just needs to pot a killer. If the pink pots it will be

as snooker but if he misses it, he would be thinking he should take the

pink on. Would you take the pink zero play the snooker? He is 23 in

front so he would be 27 in front so yes, he could do with knocking the

pink into the right corner, definitely go for that.

He is not done quite yet. Good pressure pot for Ross.

Pressure pot on the pink. Ross will get one back but will still trailed

5-3. A great chance for snooker. He

should have had the match time and dusted with the chances he has had.

You can't just roll, you have to play as stunt shot if he was going

to get in behind the blue so slight of plan.

How did he miss that one? Sometimes when he misses a shot like that,

that is a sitter. He could lose this match now. As he missed the kiss on

the Brown, it's not a snooker. Just trying to be little bit too

careful, don't you think. It wouldn't be a bad idea to pot the

green and get the Brown off the cushion. It out of the game at the

moment. Is there going to be a gap here for the green? I think there

is. Or, maybe not. Maybe not. He can certainly hit it off the site

cushion but he has to be careful he doesn't go it in off it.

Ideally, Ding would like to pot the green and brown. He needs to pot one

of them very quickly otherwise he could be sweating in a few minutes'

time. A little bit unlucky when you are

playing, if you push the Brown into the corner. If he gets a chance to

pot the green or the Brown, he would do. Obviously can't do it now.

There is a way of playing with lots of left-hand side, trying to wrest

the cue ball between the blue and black but he wants to those

together. Wow, you are kidding. I thought that would have been at

shot. This is the longest frame of the

match so far, this frame. Mentioned earlier that Ding had a couple of

chances earlier. Be interesting to see if he has a go

at this cut. Be interesting to see if Ding pots the green and the Brown

and gets the snooker on the blue that is next to the black.

Got to be a little bit careful if he hits the green towards that pink as

well. Does Ding pot the green and the

Brown and get himself nicely on the blue to run tight in behind the

black? I don't know about you but I would be tempted to pot them and get

the snooker. In a heartbeat, in a heartbeat. I cannot believe he

refused the green. He might think it is a big target behind the blue and

black. He's doing his best to put under

pressure. That would have been a tough one to

hit. The loo is in a better spot now to

get a snooker behind it. Maybe not from this shot. Better closer to the

cushion than the art in the middle of the table.

It is a free ball. Look at this. I mean... That is incredible. You

could stand there for a month of Sundays and not pull that shot off.

Is he going to bring the blue into play here? It's a great effort. That

was a fantastic positional shot from Ding, bringing the blue in the play.

He has hit it too hard. Look where the white has ended up. Is long has

he gets it off the cushion by a couple of feet and take a blue into

the corner. Definitely worth the risk. Decided against it.

Amazing how the pink ended up going in there.

He might have got the snooker back here. I suppose he deserved a bit of

good fortune after what happened previously when he accidentally

knocked the pink in. Is that pink coming to the rescue

here? I think it might. Can he get through to it? I don't think so.

He has got to knock it safe again. He has hit and hoped.

Hit it a little harder than I thought he would do. He hasn't stuck

the Brown up. It's a brown ball fight, you would have to say.

Whoever gets the Brown wins the frame.

He is struggling at the minute, Ross. It should have been tight on

the cushion. He played a strong run to get that ball on the cushion. He

just decelerated. You can see that the amusement in his face. He can't

believe how badly he hit that. APPLAUSE.

Look at this shot. Oh. I thought he was going to drop it behind the

black. Come on, Ross, you have missed a few easy frame winning

balls. Almost 15 minutes ago he had an easy green into the pocket. He

will try and pot the blue and he missed a sitter. Can he knock a more

difficult one in? That was close. This blue cuts and

the only thing with it, I think he is OK. He can avoid the middle and

the corner pocket if he pots this blue. He will automatically head up

towards the pink. It is a thin one but every chance.

Is ago to drop nicely on the pink? He has.

He had a couple of easy chances and didn't take them. What an experience

for the Scot. He started off so well. He could have led 3-1 at the

midsession interval but it isn't and Ding Junhui hasn't played anywhere

near his best form but it was about getting a result and it was quite

comfortable. He wins the match six frames to two. So they march into

the last 22 where he faces Jamie Jones. He knocked out Alan McManus

will stop more of the live stuff from us. The championship is coming

your way at BBC Two this afternoon. We have dual attraction. Ronnie

O'Sullivan and the world number one Mark Selby. Both of them playing in
