Third Round: Selby v Jones UK Snooker Championship Highlights

Hello. A very good evening to you and welcome to the 2015 Betway UK

Snooker Championship. We've had a wonderful day here at the York

Barbican and the entertainment is continuing into the night. We are

going live shortly because Mark Selby is being pushed all the way in

his match with Wales's Jamie Jones. It has been tense all evening. Let's

bring you right up to date. Here is what happened in Frame 8. 4-3 to

Jones, Selby trailing by 14 points and has snookered the

Can you believe what can happen on a snooker table, Steve. Just

ridiculous. He didn't really connect with the pink anywhere near as he

wanted. That was a bit of a misjudgment, but even so - wow! Can

he get out of jail here? Can he knock this pink in? What a time to

start potting the long balls? You couldn't write the script. You

really couldn't write the script. APPLAUSE

Amazing what can happen on a 12-6 snooker table. You are right, Jamie

Jones should be hitting that four ball, shouldn't he? Yep. Well, he's

got to be kicking himself, I know that. That is a frame that

nightmares are made of. Should he go onto lose this match, He is

favourite well... To lose it now. He was huge odds onto win it from 5-3

in front. He's gone second favourite again now.

APPLAUSE That is what is called stickability.

Mark Selby again levels at 4-all. Then Jamie Jones roared back with a

cracking break to take the next frame and the big question tonight,

we have to ask your commentary team Steve Davis, what he thought thought

is the 2012 champion Mark Selby going out? Let's go live to the

Barbican Centre and join the boys. Dramatic stuff, boys? I couldn't

agree with you more, Jason. Good evening to the late-night viewers

who have joined us at a critical stage. He got in with a great

opening red and he is on a break of 18 and counting. He was expecting to

kiss one of the two Reds on the side to cushion on the black and he

hasn't done so now only a safety shot available. Steve, to put it in

a nutshell, Mark Selby has not been in the race, has he? He hasn't

really looked like the Hoover that we know he can be. He's quickly got

into a frame and looks like he looks pretty decent amongst the balls and

inexplicably missed very easy shots. He doesn't seem to have the wait of

the table right. His tactics have been superb. His safety and grafting

has been great, but he's not flowed and Jamie Jones has looked the

stronger of the long putters. That was a big point there. The highest

break caption we saw there. Mark Selby's high yst break in the whole

match. When you consider we are in frame 10 it has only been 54. That

is the long time since you have seen Mark Selby play that. But as we all

know he just graphs and graphs. He doesn't give up. Now you can see his

determinion is back in his face again. He's a little bit angry with

himself. There has been some balls missed. Mark Selby missed two or

three of the easiest balls I have ever seen. We might get a chance to

show you one in a few moment's time. A big shot Jamie Jones is lining up

here. A massive shot. Where is the red going? Right over

the pocket. While Mark Selby is playing this shot, he ended up

winning the frame. Just look at this shot that Mark Selby has won. Can

you believe this? He needs the clearance to win and he's missed

that brown. In the last 10 years of Mark Selby playing, would you ever

have seen him miss a shot like that? You can see the amazement on Jamie

Jones face there. And then Jamie Jones missed the next shot. It was a

comedy of errors and it has been the case, and you said it earlier in the

match, in a normal situation, in a normal Mark Selby, the one that we

have come to know and respect, a situation like the h would be a

frame-winning situation, but he just hasn't looked that confident amongst

the balls. He's just got to make sure he is

across the table far enough to make the black gettable. He hasn't judged

the pace at all. He is still playing what he considers to be pin-point

position when he is not playing as well as that to get that pin-point

position at the moment. Once again, you would have thought the black

would have been potable with the rest but maybe hampering cueing is

stopping him playing it. No attempt at the pot there, of course. He is

just trying to get a good white. Mark Selby, 1.

Who r loses this match this evening will be -- whoever loses this match

this evening will be in a pretty bad place mentally, confidence-wise -

they both have thrown away great chances. Jamie Jones arguably could

have clinched this match already. Should Mark Selby lose it, well,

that is a low point in this season for him. Yes. Those who have not

been with us throughout the evening session, I mean Jamie Jones led

2-nil and was playing flawless snooker. He should definitely have

won frame 3 and 4 but it was too easy at the interval and that set

the pattern. Selby has been playing catch-up

That is more like it. A very confident putt.

This is a big test now for Jamie Jones. He's got an excellent chance

here of knocking out the world No. 1 Mark Selby. Pink, black, blue all in

play. Has he overhit it? A big bounce off the cushion. It is OK. It

might have helped him. I don't think that is the ball that - I think he

was play fogger the one in the right corner. -- playing for the one in

the right corner. It is getting late. Perhaps the cushion cover is a

bit wrapped up. That is a nice shot. 7. A bit unlucky that second red has

gone in, really. Very clever shot, wasn't it? He had to play at that

pacey to get the cue to come back for the pink because he was hitting

two Reds. Well, it could be a frame-winning shot. A match-winning

shot. LAUGHS

If it was the first frame of the evening you would say that Jamie

Jones is going to win the frame, but obviously now it is frame and

match-winning chance, there is a bit more tension in the arm. He looked

good amongst the balls. He looked better than Mark Selby. He made a

good break in the last frame albeit - oh, No, a kick. Oh, no. He just

about potted it. Absolutely dried the pace on the cue

ball. -- destroyed the pace on the cue ball. We've had some twists and

turns in this game. We really have. Yellow ball. Going back, we were

starting to talk about when Jones led 2-nil but should have led 4-nil

really. Mark Selby has only had breaks of 54, 37, 40, 38 and 33. Cue

ball. Just trying to link through for the black. Look at the reaction

from Jamie Jones. A massive kick. Another chance for Jamie Jones. Can

he do it again? Striking those as crispy as anything.

APPLAUSE He needs an angle on the brun, which

he's got. Now, surely, this time he can convert the frame. A fabulous

putt, this. He's got three reds he can play. Just have to screw up on

the middle pocket. Just on the righthand side, three reds

available. He won't get a better chance than this to knock out the

world No. 1. 5. 6. Perhaps lost a bit of control on

the cue ball. Just a little bit. He would have preferred to have played

the pink. 11. He should go this into the

middle, but it is missable. Very nice. He's going to need that

difficult red behind the pink, so there is hope for Mark Selby. That

was a bad contact as well somehow. Wanted to be straight so he could

rescue back for the black again. He played that as a stunt shot but it

ran through. Didn't look like he hit it badly.

This is a little bit more tricky than expected. A good recovery. 20.

Of course, if he doesn't fancy trying to get on the red, to clear

the balls or get over the line, he can always play a very easy snooker.

That would be not as preferable as knocking the red in, Just shows you

but... What can happen under pressure. He is looking at the

scoreboards and can't work out the scores. That is what pressure does

to you. He needs an angle on this black. Oh, yep. So, question: What

do you want to do? Try and break out the red? You would do normally.

Killer safety. Playing killer snooker. I mean, that was really

poor work leaving him hampered like this, but the pressure is on. Good

shot. 28 in front. Mark Selby is going to be in all sorts of trouble.

He's going to need to get out of this safety shot and get out of this

snooker. Not only get out of it, but keep the red safe. 33.

APPLAUSE And also, if he misses it, he will

be 36 behind the 35 on. So it is really - this is last-chance saloon

for Mark Selby. Hit it, get it, otherwise you are out. Off the top

cushion. Maybe preferable to the side cushion here. Off the top

cushion if he does connect with it, he could get it safe. He will have

two goes at it. He has one free go if he misses and gets away with it.

That is a great shot. He's got it safe.

APPLAUSE Trusted to luck, obviously. Are we

going to see one more twist in this match?

LAUGHS . This has been such a topsy turvy

match. The yellows in Jamie Jones favour, not being in an easily

potable position. All Jamie Jones needs to do is get this red off the

table. He must have been sitting in his chair when he got him snookered

there and thought, even if he pots it I will get a shot on the red. He

is not even in a position to play a good safety shot. If he tries to get

the key board in behind the black he will have to play it pacey and then

the red comes into play. He is playing a little negative one here.

If he doesn't get the snooker, he will snooker himself, but he's

played it nicely. Can he just flick the edge of this? I am not sure. No.

Doesn't look like it. He can play a little swerve and push

the red onto the left-side cushion, but he loses all of the advantage

and I don't see what else he can do, coming off two cushions - he might

be able to push the red up the table. So you think two cushions

hard? Yeah, but the white ball could go up the table as well. That is

what I was thinking and the red could kiss into the groan or the

brown. I think the - push it into the side cushion. Cut your losses

really on this one. If he hits this too hard the white is likely

Jones has got to Jack himself up over the brown. Oh, my goodness.

That makes a shot - I don't know - five times more difficult. He can't

play the putt now being hampered like this. Playing safe. No, no

attempt at the pot there. Needs to get behind the black. Just see

enough of this from Mark Selby, but it would be very hard for him to get

a snooker. I don't think the angles are there. Ultra-thin, you could get

it behind the black, but he's also going to push the red towards the

yellow pocket. That was a better choice, just getting the object to

safety. Excellent shot. APPLAUSE

He's given himself another chance now, Selby. He really has. Yes.

Jamie Jones might be forced to play off the side cushion with rescue and

try and get a full-ball contact. If he can just flick enough of it,

perhaps he can work a path back. He might get the double kiss. He might

get the double kiss, he's played it well, though. He's played it very

well. Well done. APPLAUSE That wasn't absolutely certain that

he could do that. Mark Selby has been pulling out

Robert the Bruce-like proportions tonight to just stick at it, even

though things have not been going right, going but... It is advantage

Jamie Jones for certain in this frame. Also pink a little bit out of

commission as well. As well as that yellow.

He needs to find the cushion. If it bounces, he may decide to cut this

in. An excellent shot by Mark Selby. It is a brave cut, but he only needs

one ball. Would you believe it? Oh, my

goodness. What pressure can do to you in this game is unbelievable.

Well, he hasn't necessarily lost this frame. One good positional shot

by Mark Selby could alleviate the difficulty here and this surely to

try and drop on the side cushion and give himself options Four pockets.

Of... ..Yeah, ideally into the middle pocket or... Mmm, that is not

good. He decelerated it there. He is really under it, Mark Selby at the

minute. Why wouldn't he have played the drop-on into the middle. Yeah.

If he underhits it, he is into the green pocket. If he hits it perfect

he is into the middle. Overhits it, he is into the black pocket. Quite a

big margin but the way this is, it is a very Hardwick shot. He's got to

hold for the green, which I don't think is a problem, but he can't hit

it too hard. He's hit a lot of pressure balls in his career. That

is another one! That is another one! APPLAUSE

Amazing. Jamie Jones! The agonies he is going through

tonight. Can Mark Selby pile on the pressure by getting from blue to

pink successfully? We expect him to drop this groan in and get

successfully on the brown. Doesn't have a great handle on the

brown, but he needs to leave the blue virtually half ball so he can

just drop him behind the pink. His angle is not good so he has to swing

it around two cushions. Very easy the finish short or long on this

shot. 17. Well, one more very difficult

pot on the pipping -- pink coming up in a moment. We couldn't really ask

for anything much better than that. He doesn't really want to get onto

the pink, so he has to risk playing it slow into the corner, doesn't he?

He needs to get right behind it if he can. Anywhere but there. 22.

No-man's land. Well, if you risk playing the slow

pink and trying to cover it with the black, it is very dangerous to play

it that way. He's taking it on. What a great shot. A fantastic shot.

APPLAUSE How on earth has Mark Selby got to

5-5. ? But that is it! He is still in there.

APPLAUSE The decider live on BBC, 5-5. Well,

Steve, honestly, I just can't believe what has happened in this

match. I mean, Selby has just been grafting and grafting and highest

break - 54 and it is 5-all. Jones Jennifer Aniston, I suppose, did the

right thing by playing that snoker. He just got out of it -- snooker. He

just got out of it. Mark Selby's escape was perfect and then Jamie

Jones was sort of on the back foot again. He couldn't get over the line

and the thin cut. That was it. He would have been better off playing

it thicker. He got so excited. It was a chance to win frame and match,

but that one shot on the red. This is the cut now. People at home might

be suggesting why hasn't he pushed the red and played it full ball

behind the black and played it at the other end. This is frame and

match ball so he is entitled to play it, but because of the nerves he put

too much side on it and cut it too thin. You never know what will

happen, do you? What will happen in this last frame. Probably go and

make it 1-6-7 or something. He potted the red and didn't get right

on the yellow potting the black and didn't get right on the pink. The

pink and yellow, the way he's been playing this evening he wouldn't

have been looking forward to playing those two shots. Heroic effort, it

has got to be said. It is not necessarily all about what your best

is. APPLAUSE

It is how many matches you can pull out of the fire. 11th and final

frame. Jamie Jones to break. Probably his best performance,

really, to win. Here we go, final frame, we never thought it would be

that an hour ago. Jamie Jones breaks off. After just over four hours of

play. It is not a bad breaker. Can he get through to the red? If he can

get through to the red, it cuts. If Markit feels he can't get through

to the red, then it is not a safety shot. Maybe if he swerves. It helps

because it helps the cue ball get back to the ball and obviously he

will be trying to pot the red. That is the first time that Mark Selby

has been ahead in this match, albeit only by one point. 1. A marvellous

shot there. A power swerve to make the potting angle.

Can he open the reds up with this? Perhaps he chose a more controlled

shot. There are reds available. I thought for a moment he was going to

go into them, but... In the last frame he got in very

early and it looked like he was going to move through the gears and

he inexplicably lost an easy ball, but once again he is first in. What

can he do? Still 54 is his highest break and if

you can going to win a ball at one visit you need more than 54 so Jamie

Jones will still be thinking he is going to get another chance in this

match. After the nitty-gritty when it gets

to the final frame, they sometimes find plenty. The way he has played,

I will be surprised if he wins the game at one visit, but he is such a

great champion that he might just do that.

11. What is available at this end of the table? The red to the right of

the black there is a pack of two to get onto that red.

You see, normally, if you are playing great, you just roll this in

and get on that gap, but he is independent hitting the ball that

well, so he may decide an alternative shot to that one. He has

player for the loose red. I don't know if he is on it for that pace.

He's just on it. 16. He is on it, but he may not be. He is just on it.

Perhaps he can hold for the black. He's got to play it slow. Should he

have wanted to be on the black. He didn't want to collide with that

red. This is a monster black to take on. Massively missable. Once again,

though, Steve, have you ever seen Selby play a canon like that when

he's got oceans of room to get on the blue ball colour. He got into

the cue ball a bit too much. Now, in normal circumstances, even if it is

5-5 he would be taking the black on, but I am not sure his confidence is

good enough to play the black now. Wow, he is looking at the snooker,

the safety. On another day, he would knock the yellow in, I think.

Although the red is in the way on the cushion for that, so - well.

17. Mark Selby. The most important thing - there is no one right way to

play any given shot and it is how you feel. If you don't feel

comfortable, then don't do it. He's not been comfortable all night,

Steve, has he? On another day he would have knocked the yellow and

the black in, but he's trying to get over the line. Somehow. Somehow.

LAUGHS . The silly thing is if he wins in

match he may go on and win the tournament and play some of the best

snooker he's ever played. Every day is a different day.

A very good safety shot there from Jamie Jones. Might have looked like

an attempted pot, but it was never that.

There is a few nice positions in the baulk area to try and hide behind.

Brown and green are looking tempting. Not great. It is very

unlike Selby, isn't it? His safety has been poor as well tonight. Not

to find the top cushion there. He's giving Jamie Jones the upper hand in

the safety exchange. Behind the yellow tight to the rail could pay

dividends. Not bad. There is a red that has

poked its Well, now where all of the reds are, this is a big shot to take

on. I think he's got the take it on. There is a slight chance -- He is

playing the safety. Wow! It is not as easy as it locks.

APPLAUSE Fantastic shot. There is me talking

more aggressively than I have ever played and Markit is playing the

right shot at the -- Markis playing the right shot at the right time. If

he has to de-20 at a time, he is normally great. It doesn't matter.

Even though he hasn't got the cue ball, down on the ball cushion, it

is a little bit of a problem for Jamie Jones. Looks like the only

shot he's got is a thin one down the left-hand side. He hasn't got that

much room for manoeuvre here. Very nice. Where is the red? Now where is

the white? Can he get it behind the yellow?

Looks a good shot. A great shot. Mark...oh, my goodness. Oh, dear!

Oh, dear! We both "oh deared" at the same time. Once again, I think he

will have to play a swerve. Let's look down the line to see if he can

play a swvr here. Maybe not. I don't think he's got

play a swvr here. Maybe not. I don't not. I don't think he's got enough

of that. The side won't take. What he could do is overswerve to try and

play cushion first and he doesn't mind if it goes in off. As long as

he hit the red. As long as you hit the red, yes. It is not the swerve

to try to pot the red. That is dangerous. Overswerve cushion first,

inside of the red, in off and take your chances. Or can he work out

some other type of shot? He's looking for some inspiration of

what we can think of. We have thought of a few things, albeit not

necessarily right. We don't know what to do either -- Mark? I like

the overswerve. As long as you hit the red. You have got to move the

red away from the pocket. Well, not bad. He may have made it hard for

Jamie Jones to get on the colour. Yeah, I agree. Lucky the red is not

the problem, but where does the white come? Kissing the red. I

wouldn't like this in the middle pocket. Is he going for it? Wow.

What a big shot this is. What a big shot!

This subpoena an excellent - with what has happened to Jamie Jones

this evening -- this is an excellent - with what has happened to Jamie

Jones this evening, the play a shot like that in the final frame, you

have to take your hat off to him. That was brilliant. This is a bit

awkward. APPLAUSE

If he can get his cue through the gap, he's got a shot at the red, but

I just don't think he is able to get on a colour.

That gap you are talking about is there. He has to be careful with the

pink. Careful with the follow-threw that he doesn't touch a reds. --

follow-threw that he doesn't touch a red. It was off-putting. Those two

reds hadn't been there, he no doubt would have potted that. Jamie Jones.

That was hard. Harder than it looked, I think.

Mark Selby eyeing up the red in the middle. A bit of sped. I think he is

eyeing that up, anyway. He is worried about just in case he hits

it too hard. If he plays for the pink in the middle, he won't have to

hit it too hard. Excellent. APPLAUSE

This is the first sight he's had of winning the match.

Jamie Jones has failed to get over the winning line on a few occasions

in this match, individual frames. Can Mark Selby do it at the most

important part? 8. I don't blame him at all going for

blue or even the green at this stage just to keep his hand on the table,

just to get further and further clear at the moment. He is 25 points

and counting. 16. Like I say, under normal circumstances you would say

it is a certainty, but not this evening.

Jamie's face is getting a bit redder there. He is getting frustrated

about what might have been and what certainly should have been. This is

one maybe, Jamie, that has definitely got away.

36 points in front. 27. Three more reds, three more colours. Should be

enough. Has he got the end on the pink to

flick the other two reds into play? He has.

This play up for the blue now or even the pink to get it into the

same pocket. The same pocket he's just potted it in. 35.

Trying to make this break as easy as possible.

Blue and pink are sometimes nice balls to knock in when you are under

a bit of pressure or open pocket. That looks like it. A great

positional shot. It is all over. APPLAUSE

43 points in front with 51 on. Jamie Jones, with this red goes in, will

know that he is out of the tournament and, boy, should he have

won it! 45. It won't be the best Christmas you have ever had, Jamie,

having seen this match slip away. Selby looks like making the highest

break of the match for him in this final frame. 53. How on earth has

Mark Selby won this match? I have watched every ball go in and I don't

know how he has won. Incedsible. -- incredible.

I've just had a text from his wife, Vickie, to say "thank God". That's

right, he's pulled it from somewhere today. He really has. Incredible.

You have got the feel so sorry for Jamie. That is what experience does

for you. He had the match completely won on five or six occasions, but

that is it. I am sure he can't believe he's done it, but he's come

back on five occasions and the only time he's been in front of the match

is just then. Mark Selby goes through, six frames to five. Well,

Steve, it is a match that honestly I don't know how he has won. I really

don't. Nor do I. I have never seen him so ill at ease around the table.

I have never seen him so uncomfortable. He shook his head

towards the even and felt like it wasn't his day. He stuck at it. From

my perspective, it wasn't even his B game he played there, but his C

game. It was good tactically, still sound. You have got to say, "Well

done, Mark Selby", I think Jamie Jones had the best of it. If you

look at the stats, I don't know if they tell a story or not. They

sevened themselves out a bit. Earlier in the The ball has match...

Plotted. It is amazing. Jamie Jones has done everything. He outscored

him on points and balls potted. The key thing, early on the long pot

success he was miles behind and all the rest of it. Towards the end of

the game when Jamie Jones saw the winning post he started to miss a

few. And his positional play wasn't as strong and in the last frame he

had the black at his mercy and he got himself tied up at the top end

of the table. Perhaps he could have played a slightly less critical

shot, but that is the way it is. Absolutely. Back to the studio now.

Mark Selby is here. I remember doing a late interview on what should be a

highlights programme a couple of years ago and at one stage this

evening we thought you were out of it. Did you think you were out of

it? The way I played there was pretty pathetic. Jamie played a lot

better than me. He scored well when he got the chances and to be fair,

deserved to win the match. If probably deserved to win 6-2, 6-3. I

was very, very pr. Happy to get over the line. What was it? Was it

because Jamie play sodwell or you game? Why you couldn't get in front?

A little bit of both. Jamie was scoring when he got a chance and

that was putting me under pressure. I kept blowing the chances and Jamie

kept picking up the pieces. Did you fear for your UK championship at one

stage throughout this evening? Yeah, I mean Jamie made a good break. I

knit the frame 4-all when I had no right to win the frame. I thought he

might wilter a bit and he made a great frame to go in front and I

thought it showed the character of him. He didn't let his head go down.

Just my usual self, dug in and turned it around. I am sure, Mark,

you will analyse it, but do you think frame 8 when you had that

snacker, is that what hauled you back into the match? Possibly. Like

I said, Jamie should have definitely won that. He had a couple of chances

at the pink to put that away but I mained to knit that frame, but he

made a great next frame to go 5-4 in front. I don't know what to say,

happy to get over the line. The fact that you have lost to Jamie in

Australia, 5-1. Does that play on the mind knowing you have lost to

someone lick Jamie and you are in this position? Not really. Every

game is different. Everyone going out there knows you are playing

against top-class players and Jamie is one of them. He proved that

getting into the quarter finals at the World Championships and when he

bet me at the Australian he got to the semifinal and was only one frame

away from getting to the final. Well done. You are through. That is the
