Second Round: Part 2 UK Snooker Championship Highlights

When it comes to high profile winners by the name of Trump there

is a reasonable president in November. It comes as no surprise if

another Trump were also to claim a big price in the same month here in

York, in the UK Championship, in the Barbican Centre. Judd Trump has won

before five years ago and is in a purple patch, very consistent this

season, the world number three is on our radar.

Like Judd Trump, Ronnie O'Sullivan would also win a popularity contest.

He was in cruise control getting through to round three. He hasn't

conceded a single frame. Five times champion of the world,

The Rocket Ronnie O'Sullivan! The five-time UK Championship taken

-- at hour for his first round match.

He played Rhys Clark. When he missed that straightforward red, Ronnie

O'Sullivan wasted no time. A quickfire century in the second

frame. He had a 2-0 lead.

He was firing on all cylinders as he cruised into the mid-session

interval four frames in front. Despite that foul in the fifth,

another bad miss from the 22-year-old has led the Englishman

back to the table to clear up. In the six frame, a couple of shots to

savour, first this Rajasekhara Reddy to get another century break

bowling. How about that for a fluke?

Add this for the next shot. Another clearance, another century.

This time in just over one hour. Into the third round, Ronnie

O'Sullivan. Early days. It is too early to start

judging your form. I have only 12. So far, so good. I

will speak to you in a couple of days, it might be different.

He is into his 40s but check out the younger generation. 16-year-old Yan

Bingtao. Yann Wenbo has had a fearless

impact. Further Chinese success as Ding

Junhui who has inspired many tears. A workmanlike performance against

Ross Muir, 6-2. A great start to the season. Like

2013 and 2014. But I am not too worried about form

or if I can win any more tournaments. I just want to leave

the pressure and go straight to the match. That is the way to go.

Sometimes I make it so complicated. A milestone reached by Mark Allen

who polished off his first ever competitive 147 in a win over Rod

Lawler, a special moment. The sixth maximum break on the World Snooker

tour this season, well done, Mark. Obviously a bit of luck into the

pack, early on 17. Then the pressure was on because I was thinking about

it from 16, 17. There was one tricky red.

The pressure was on big-time. I managed to hold myself together. I

was relieved at the end. I missed the black twice last season, there

have been others in the past, famously in the Masters.

So to the matches tonight where Judd Trump was one of the main

attractions, the world number three has had a consistent season. One

major win, appeared in another final, one more semifinal and two

quarters. Not bad for a strike rate. Tonight Judd Trump faced 21-year-old

Oliver Lines, voted the Snooker tour rookie of The Year last year and

whose dad Peter has created one of the big surprises of the event, he

knocked out Neil Robertson in the first round. Oliver is attempting to

join his old man in round three and he set off while, taking the first

frame with 62. We pick things up now. Lines is ahead. Watched by Des

Taylor and John Virgo. Where is the red going to finish,

down to the baulk, I think it is to the middle.

That is a little unlucky, he did get a good cue ball.

He looks a bit edgy to me, Judd. He is looking at it, it must be tight.

The other is slightly more difficult. That doesn't go. It

definitely doesn't pot. The other two to the right of the

pink, no problem with them. If he cannot these in, he won't need

the difficult red near the side cushion. He is a bit further away

than he would have liked. What a slice of good fortune that

is. He might need a cannon here to hold for a red.

Ideally, the one next to the pink, he must feel he can hold for that.

That does pot, the one just above the pink. 25 in front. This could be

the key to giving him the second frame if he gets this one right.

No mistake this time on the mid-distance red. Perfect on the

black. Now, 33 points ahead, two or in the

middle of the table, just one with a colour would be enough.

I am a little surprised he played for the pink come he doesn't want to

be too straight. He just has the angle to run around the cushions

onto the red. But he has made it difficult. He just needs the red to

go 41 ahead. With just 35 remaining. And he has missed it! Well, has he

had a stroke of luck, I think he has.

He certainly has, John, even if he bends it around the blue, it is not

easy to flick that red in. If it was further away from the cushion, he

would be able to swerve round. That was frame ball there.

He has got to play the swerve and move the red. He will have to come

off the cushion. I don't think he can flick that read in but he can't

leave it there. No, he has got to move it as you

say. The Judd Trump of old may try and pot this red on the side

cushion. But that would be too dangerous. Just swerve it. And hit

the red. But don't leave it there if you can help it.

There is a possibility he could double-kiss the red into the pocket

if he swerve around it. Let us see what happens.

That is not going to reach, nowhere near. He has conceded the frame.

That will be frowned upon slightly. But it was just annoyance.

To be fair, but he hadn't hit the red, it would have been Snooker is

required. Judd Trump, not the start he was looking for, Oliver lies

He is not having it all his own weight in the next frame. He is

snookered behind the green, his fourth attempt to get out of this.

Oh, that time he hit the green, with the cue as well.

It could be a free ball. What he has got to do here is put a

ball next to the red. The reason he is doing that is because he is going

round to see if the white can hit at fourball. Judd doesn't think it is a

free ball. That is never a free ball. He has

got to put it back again. It is tough to judge, playing it

with side. Would you believe it, he has not

only hit it, he has pushed it over the corner. He must feel everything

is running against him at the moment.

And now the difference just two points. I didn't think it was that

good a Snooker. If he can get nicely onto the

yellow, with a little bit of angle, or maybe not enough angle...

Surely he is not looking at the green here, is he? You would think

he would be able to pop the easy pink, and get onto the yellow. He

fancies the green. Surely he can make some sort of

angle with the pink or screw back, the yellow with pass the brown. I

couldn't believe he was going to take the green.

Nothing wrong with that shot. So, he still needs green, brown and

blue. But, being a left-hander, the blue

is not going to be a problem for him.

It would have been much easier if he hadn't dropped in behind it. He

doesn't have to do anything with it. Just drop it in.

Well, who would have thought the scoreline would read 3-0 to Oliver

Lines? But that is exactly what it is. For

this young man from Leeds. STUDIO: He is taking it very

confidently indeed. Great composure from this young man who joined the

page and early two years ago. He has a bit of catching up, Oliver Lines

18 points adrift here. He hasn't been in amongst the balls

with any sort of chance to get his rhythm going. The possibility of a

three-ball plants, always worth a look. I don't think they are on. A

loose red. A bit of pressure, he needs a bit of help here.

That is what we call a Judd Trump special. With that cannon, he is on

the black, he deserved a bit of fortune after a pot like that.

Time for Judd Trump to go to work. Mid-session interval after this

frame. He will want something to show for the efforts. Looked certain

to win the last frame. But it all went against him. He will want to

make the most of this opportunity. It is still not clear cut.

Now, he is looking to play on this read to the right of the black. He

grimaced a little bit, I don't know why, he can clearly get through to

the red. When he pops the black here, he will

pot the red closest to the top cushion. Now he has got the black

available to both corners. But, what else is available? Much

better to go in to the balls from the pink rather than from the black.

One good cannon, he could take the frame. It is all about this shot.

That will do nicely. A nicely played, controlled cannon.

He didn't hit it as hard as he could. He just needed to bring if

you away. Now the possibility of a plant. He can get on the red near

the top cushion should he so wished but he fancies the plant.

And it is dead on. Just a little bit careless, he was

concentrating that much on the plant, he forgot about position on

the blue. He may happen to play the pink here. -- Have to.

No problem. So, 59 points is the lead. He is not going to play for

the black. This pink and one more red. And he

will have his first frame on the scoreboard and will be mightily

relieved at the mid-session interval.

Absolutely, John. The best of 11. 3-1 is not all that bad.

If he had offered Oliver 3-1 at the start of the match, he would have

taken it. It is all building up very nicely. This battle of the

left-handers. Trying to bring those two reds from

the side. I don't mind him doing that, the frame is over.

He played that right-handed. The rest will be obsolete.

We could arrange a little match with Judd Trump fame with his right hand,

Ronnie O'Sullivan playing with his left hand.

I think I would fancy runny, and in all honesty I think Judd would as

well. Judd Trump goes into the mid-session

with something to show for it. Oliver lies will be well pleased as

you say, Dennis, to be leading 3-1. A settler for sure, but Oliver Lines

is not backing down. They shared both frames after the interval.

Now, in the seventh frame, Trump is 17 points adrift with just the

colours remaining. Just a little bit of the Yellows

sticking out. Everything safe over the left side of the table.

Not much sticking out. One more role and it would have been a very good

snooker. As you say, he won't be leaving anything. But you have to

hit the yellow! A free ball.

No need to hit it that then, just make certain you hit it. So, pot the

black, but can he get position back on the yellow on the table? This

looks pretty good. He couldn't have played it much

better. We know when you force them. Plenty

of tension out there. Both players now, they do know the importance of

this frame, a huge frame in the context of the match.

Always nice to see the big breaks to win friends. But there is nothing

like a bit of tension in a frame as close as this -- frames.

I don't think the yellow will pass the pink. He is having a little

look. Does he think it will go in-off the pink? If he is going to

play it he couldn't be better situated, right in the line.

He couldn't do it staying at that pace. If you are going to play, play

it slow. This would be a lovely one. He could

put this in the middle pocket but it looks like he will play the snooker.

Up into the corner. Middle pocket would have been my

choice. Rolling it in, giving it every chance. And still having a

shot at the green. What a shot. Look at the position on

the green, absolutely perfect. Or, is it?

It just ran a fraction of an inch. It is still possible, this green.

But the cue ball will have to travel up and down the table to get back

for the brown. Equipped -- Quick glance at the scoreboard, he needs

the pink. And he needed the green.

Is the brown going to come to the rescue here? I don't think so. It

nearly did. Surely he can pot this? Oliver needs green, brown and blue,

he does not need the awkward pink. He keeps looking around at the

scoreboard. Oh, a terrific shot. Absolutely

plumb on the blue. He's got a terrific temperament. We

heard his dad in the interview earlier today saying what a great

temperament and his son has. He has proved that here. And barring

snookers, the young lad from Leeds now leads 5-2. And Judd try and

didn't get those snookers. 5-2 it is. This is the first time these two

men have ever played together but the world number 61, Oliver Lines,

already has some big scalps. This would be a famous win were he to

pull this off against Judd Trump though, the current world number

three. Into the next we go, and the young man has a 33 cushion. -- 35

cushion. He has left a chance of this red but very difficult to see

how Judd can guarantee position on a car. -- colour. Well, that's the

problem. I'd fancy him putting the bed but may position. -- reporting

the red but no position. He needs a good cue ball here. And

that's not it. Do you know, he was trying to bring the black into play

and he played the shot with his opposite hand and he played it far

too thin. He wanted to bring the black into play because he is 34

behind and the blue and pink of their spots. But what a target down

the left side of the table. I know he doesn't want to move that one but

if he plays it and double slipped across the table, it is so easy to

get behind those colours. -- doubles it across the table.

Well, he has knocked a few reds into pottable positions but he has

covered them, so that puts a lot of pressure on Judd. He could be lucky

here. He needs a good cue ball though otherwise he could leave a

read on. That is what he has done. Once again, the safety is not good

enough. In it goes. Does that black bounce? It does. He is on the black.

Another chance to win frame and match and another big, big shock.

It would be a shock result for most people but I'll tell you one person

it won't be a shop -- shock for, the man of the table, Oliver Lines. He

practices with Judd, knows his game inside and out, but to produce this

form on a big match that matters, as he goes a little bit too far, yes,

to produce these standards at the UK Championships against one of the big

stars, what a feather in his cap this would be. This red, and if it's

dead straight, he'll be on the black and that is all he would need. The

red and the black. He is steadying himself. Getting up off the shot. It

is not absolutely straight, but still should be on the black.

I like his temperament. He looks as cool as a cucumber out there.

It now looks as though Judd Trump's race has been run. The world number

three, that's what he is ranked at the moment, he will be disappointed.

Didn't get the best of starts, losing the first three frames and

now there is no way back to the table. Oliver 's father, Peter, beat

the defending champion Neil Robertson in an earlier round and

now his son is following suit. No point looking at the scoreboard,

Oliver, the next thing that will happen if a bread doesn't go in will

be a handshake. So, another shock. We have seen a view but back to me

is one of the biggest ones. He is getting a tremendous reception from

this York crowd and why not. You could say he is a local boy done

good. He beat the world number three Judd Trump by brains to two. To be

honest with you, I can't really think about it right now. I'm

overwhelmed with the support I've had from everybody. Obviously it's

great beating a player of Judd's quality in front of such a big crowd

on the biggest stage. I've never really won a match on TV before. I

have one in smaller competitions, but never against a world-class

player, so I'm absolutely buzzing. He did all right. He missed a few

balls under pressure but that's going to happen. It kind of get to

the point when the ball once like that that you feel invincible and I

think he felt like that when he got two for - two, 5-2. You feel like

you can't lose and the pressure comes off them. Even when he missed,

he didn't leave a lot. It was very annoying for me because it's the

first big tournament of the season and to go out so early is

frustrating. I'm going to put this one to one side, I'll enjoy tonight,

and then tomorrow back on the practice table. He looks the part,

doesn't he, with the debonair quiff and the game to match. His reward is

a match in the last 32 against Jimmy Robertson, the Sussex player who had

a good winter night. To one of the other headline attractions, Shaun

Murphy, who has won this title in the past and been a finalist as

well. He was taking on the thin, Robin Hull, and this was a quality

match in the making. You wouldn't think so from Robin's perspective

because he was quickly 4-1 down but he had thrown in a century along the

way, just like Sean. We doing this in the fifth with just the colours

remaining. -- joy the fifth with just the colours remaining. It is

all about Russia, isn't it, all about pressure.

What a massive shot that was. Back in the match if he wins this frame.

Highly likely he will be out of the match if he loses it.

Can you believe it? He's done it exactly the same as he did with the

yellow. It is in exactly the worst place. Can he do enough? No, I don't

think so. That was a poor shot. The black to yellow, you could say that

was a bit of bad luck, but the margin of error here shouldn't be

that much. He decided to play two cushions.

Now, how is his state of mind? He has had two chances already. Does he

feel he has to take this on? We've been singing Shaun Murphy's

praises all night. He has skill with the rest. Let's see if he can check

this one in for the blue. He cued that one very well. Very impressive.

It's gone from a gimme blue to something that can be missed. Right

in the middle of the pocket. Again, he's just landed in the middle.

You'd expect him to get it. And he has done. So, it took him two or

three bytes of the cherry, but in the end, it is Shaun Murphy that

takes this frame and now looks to have a commanding lead at five

frames to one. Yes, but Robin Hull took the next to reduce the arrears

to just three frames, but in frame eight, Murphy appears to be on the

brink of victory, leading by 57 points to 53.

Well, having missed a couple of balls with the best, he has spotted

the important one. -- he has potted the important one now. Once again,

hit that a lot harder than he needed to. That was a twitchy one. Maybe

that stems from the fact he's not had a successful past two or three

months. Hasn't got the confidence of winning matches that he usually

does. He meets both pink and black. --

needs both pink and black. Well done. This is a frame that will hurt

Sean. It should have been frame and much and be back in his hotel. Robin

Hull knows he is going to take Shaun Murphy even further in this match,

but he still trails by 5-3. Yes, Robin prolong this ambitions in

this tournament at least for another frame. As we join them in this one

though, it is all over bar the shouting.

That puts the match beyond any doubt at all now, so Shaun Murphy will be

very relieved, as he should have won the match 61. -- 6-1. He will also

be delighted that Dominic Dale awaits in the next round. Dominik

has found a bit of form recently. I think he beat Graham. 6-1 in the

last round. Everything is going in as it was in

the first three frames, right into the heart of the pocket.

This has been an excellent break. Going towards the century. Very well

played, very well done. He has had to play -- he has had to dig deep

their, having shown signs of weakness in the previous frames.

That is an exhibition shopped for the crowd. -- an exhibition shopped.

That leaves him as one of the undoubted favourites to win this

tournament, particularly if he is on his best form. The black's not fair

but Robin Hull will be very disappointed our thing had -- having

had chances against Shaun Murphy. He eventually goes out. Very pleased.

Robin is a very tough opponent, someone I've played a lot recently

and I know his game well. A very good player in all areas and I knew

I had to play well. I thought I did play OK. Could have been more

clinical at the end. I had a couple of chances to put him away and on

another day against someone else, that can cost you, but pleased and

very pleased to still be here. Yes, difficult for Shaun Murphy but

here's proof. Other results today: there is no doubt that we should

hear it for the Lines boys. Snooker extra follows tonight. You can see
