Welcome to continued coverage of the williamhill.com UK championship

:01:09.:01:14.

from the Barbican Centre in York. You have had a little taste of the

:01:14.:01:18.

four talents will be seen and second in action this afternoon.

:01:18.:01:21.

One of them was until recently the number-one player in the world,

:01:21.:01:27.

Mark Selby. And there is more to the 21 year older and -- 29 year

:01:27.:01:30.

old and been the Jester from Leicester, as we can see with his

:01:30.:01:40.
:01:40.:01:41.

profile. Mark Selby has not won as many major ranking events as his

:01:41.:01:48.

current ranking position suggests. He obviously has got there through

:01:48.:01:52.

sheer consistency. Over the past few years he has been in so many

:01:52.:01:57.

semi-finals and finals. He puts a lot of work into his game. He's one

:01:57.:02:02.

of the men to beat. But he has probably under achieved a bit.

:02:02.:02:06.

it comes to that consistency level he produces year-end, year out, one

:02:06.:02:11.

of the things I like about his game is the relentless repetitiveness of

:02:11.:02:15.

his cueing action. It gets a bad rap in as much as the players are

:02:15.:02:21.

rather repetitive. They do not tend to be as exciting as the ones who

:02:21.:02:24.

seem to be a little bit all over the place, but Marks will be's

:02:24.:02:34.
:02:34.:02:36.

cueing action is as good as anybody's. -- Mark Selby's.

:02:36.:02:39.

watch the movement in his head and the big, long cue action and I

:02:39.:02:44.

wonder, if it is always going to be that big, long, straight line, but

:02:44.:02:49.

certainly, for the time being, it is working superbly well. You would

:02:49.:02:52.

not call him one of the flair players, but in terms of getting

:02:52.:02:59.

the job done, three or four centuries in a row, he is not

:02:59.:03:02.

frightened of scoring highly and making big breaks, which is

:03:02.:03:09.

fantastic to watch. He has a fantastic mentality and he has

:03:09.:03:12.

thrown himself into the season and played in almost everything and

:03:12.:03:17.

done very well on the back of that, although we had heard it said that

:03:17.:03:20.

little lot of players here struggling to keep up the momentum

:03:20.:03:24.

in that department. It is hard for the top players to play a lot of

:03:24.:03:27.

snooker and keep at the high standard they want to be at, but

:03:27.:03:31.

there are times when you need a week's practice on your own two

:03:31.:03:33.

sorts of things out, but if you are playing tournament after tournament,

:03:34.:03:38.

you do not get the chance. Different players are turning to

:03:38.:03:41.

different coaches to find that little bit extra, to give them the

:03:41.:03:47.

edge. Can he win the World Championship? He would be

:03:47.:03:50.

disappointed if he did not win the World Championship or the UK

:03:50.:03:54.

championship in his career, because he has been world number one, so

:03:54.:03:58.

there would be something missing if he did not win one of those

:03:58.:04:03.

tournaments. Mark is taking on Welshman, Ryan Day, who produced a

:04:03.:04:11.

shock in the first round. But, Mark Selby dominates the head-to-head

:04:11.:04:15.

clashes and he won 6-0 you last year, but it was Ryan Day was

:04:15.:04:18.

forced into his stride. We will join the match in frame three, with

:04:18.:04:24.

Mark Selby at the table already rent -- trailing. Dennis Taylor and

:04:24.:04:34.
:04:34.:04:45.

John Virgo are in the commentary That has made it awkward. He will

:04:45.:04:51.

have to take the yellow instead. Been on a nice, easy pink to the

:04:51.:04:56.

middle. This can happen when you are struggling. With the table been

:04:56.:05:06.
:05:06.:05:32.

so fast, it is difficult to control the cue ball. His cueing action is

:05:32.:05:39.

all over the place at the moment. Worrying times for Mark Selby.

:05:39.:05:44.

There is just not pushing the cue through, straight, not finding the

:05:44.:05:51.

centre of the cue ball. With a straight shot, you hit the cue ball,

:05:51.:05:56.

it will go straight and hit the red in the middle, but there was some

:05:56.:06:03.

unwanted side with no intention of side and the cue ball. As you said,

:06:03.:06:13.
:06:13.:06:24.

worrying. For Mark Selby and his It was not quite as easy as

:06:24.:06:34.
:06:34.:06:39.

everyone thought, that last shot. Have a look at the table and the

:06:39.:06:49.
:06:49.:06:49.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 51 seconds

:06:49.:07:40.

way that the reds are. This would be some clearance! He would like to

:07:40.:07:46.

get closer to the one near the blue, to drop it into the pocket. I tell

:07:46.:07:52.

you what, he just took his eye off the pot, so everything going wrong

:07:52.:08:02.
:08:02.:08:02.

at the moment. Mark Selby how often -- how often do you see him miss a

:08:02.:08:12.
:08:12.:08:20.

The ball is being cleaned, although I did not detect any kick. Usually,

:08:20.:08:25.

if you get at kick, you miss it to the other jaw, but he hit that on

:08:25.:08:35.
:08:35.:08:43.

He could have done it with a little bit of angle. He can get up for the

:08:43.:08:53.
:08:53.:08:56.

red that is to the right of the black and reds. He has not made a

:08:56.:09:02.

good job of that. He has snookered himself on the easier Robb the reds.

:09:02.:09:07.

There are a few of those reds that will go, into the corner pocket, so

:09:07.:09:17.
:09:17.:09:27.

Let us have a look at this. He just got into it too much. He wanted to

:09:27.:09:33.

be near the black. This is a tricky one that he is taking on, and what

:09:33.:09:37.

a good shot, and what they could cannon on the black. The cannon on

:09:37.:09:47.
:09:47.:09:55.

the black was a bonus. -- what a That could be a frame winner. 45

:09:55.:10:05.
:10:05.:10:25.

Just the black needed. A glance at the scoreboard to make sure. One

:10:25.:10:35.
:10:35.:10:39.

frame before the interval, and regardless of what happens, Mark

:10:39.:10:45.

will be heading off to the practice table. He is not with it at the

:10:45.:10:55.
:10:55.:11:15.

moment. He pots this red, I don't think Mark Selby will carry on.

:11:15.:11:19.

mid-session interval coming up after this and that is not the best

:11:19.:11:23.

break-off shot. He has left the pot to the left corner and there is a

:11:23.:11:32.

way round to the back of the black. Can Ryan Day Open with a good pot?

:11:32.:11:42.
:11:42.:11:46.

Not quite. With it being the first to six frames, 3-1 behind at the

:11:46.:11:49.

mid-session interval would not be that bad, as we show you that

:11:49.:11:59.
:11:59.:12:22.

Congested around the black spot. But he can develop those reds and

:12:22.:12:32.
:12:32.:12:39.

the black looks to be available. If the white pulls up he can go red,

:12:39.:12:49.
:12:49.:12:53.

blue, then up for the reds near the black. The one to the right of the

:12:53.:13:03.
:13:03.:13:03.

black available from the right. The one above the black available into

:13:03.:13:13.
:13:13.:13:40.

That has certainly spread them. He did that because he hadn't the

:13:40.:13:50.
:13:50.:13:56.

angle to play the reds near the black. That was the only red that

:13:56.:14:01.

was available to a lack, even after splitting them all over the table.

:14:01.:14:10.

It is very important, this visit. We know what a good player he is.

:14:10.:14:16.

So plaque, based on the first three frames, he has just not been

:14:16.:14:24.

scoring at all -- so far. These are big moments in the match for Mark

:14:24.:14:34.
:14:34.:14:45.

He needs to make the most of this But, he is capable of doing this.

:14:45.:14:51.

We have seen over the last five or six seasons, he can go a couple of

:14:51.:14:58.

frames going, but, he can come back very strongly, also. He needs a

:14:58.:15:08.
:15:08.:15:09.

vast improvement on the three He still moves around a little bit

:15:09.:15:15.

on the shot. It is something he has always done. It is just a natural

:15:15.:15:25.
:15:25.:15:40.

He has got a good sense of humour. I said to him the other day, when I

:15:40.:15:46.

was playing in the World Seniors against Nigel Bond, and I said that

:15:46.:15:50.

I didn't realise I was moving around on the shot, and he said,

:15:50.:15:55.

you are talking to the wrong man! He plays with a bit of movement,

:15:55.:16:05.

and he copes very well with it. You can see that slight movement.

:16:05.:16:13.

Played a good shot, there - brought the black into play. Under normal

:16:13.:16:17.

circumstances you would say this was a frame-winning opportunity,

:16:17.:16:22.

but I would not count my chickens, and I don't think Mark Selby well,

:16:22.:16:32.
:16:32.:16:42.

either, not after what has happened He is one of the best break-

:16:42.:16:48.

builders in the game, having made 269 centuries, 55 centuries last

:16:48.:16:58.

season. He is a heavy scorer. There is no doubt about that. This is the

:16:58.:17:07.

first time he has really got his hand on the table. He had a 35

:17:07.:17:10.

break in the first frame, but that was not good enough to win him that

:17:10.:17:20.
:17:20.:17:22.

Nice angle night, on this black. Loose reds and either side, 46

:17:22.:17:30.

points in the lead, possible 83 left, so, he only needs two or

:17:30.:17:40.
:17:40.:17:57.

And, that could have worked out Ryan Day has only had one shot, he

:17:57.:18:01.

attempted a long red, that he's usually pretty good at, and he has

:18:01.:18:07.

been sitting down at Racine's. But Mark Selby, with that split, was

:18:08.:18:17.
:18:18.:18:34.

very unlucky -- has been sitting down a row since. -- ever since.

:18:34.:18:44.
:18:44.:18:54.

It is always the sign of a great player, when you are out of sorts,

:18:54.:18:58.

you lose three frames, you have missed all sorts of shots, you

:18:59.:19:03.

cannot knock in the long ones in, and all of a sudden, he is back,

:19:03.:19:10.

looking like a world-beater. He is taking these quite well. It would

:19:10.:19:14.

have been quite easy to press the panic button, the way that he was

:19:14.:19:24.
:19:24.:19:30.

When he pots the black he will be 66 points in front, with 67

:19:30.:19:39.

remaining, so, this black and one more red is all that is required.

:19:39.:19:49.
:19:49.:19:56.

I think the red goes past the two Let us have a look from the other

:19:56.:20:00.

side. I could never see from this end, when you are directly behind

:20:00.:20:05.

the ball it is easier to see the angle. You would like to lead a

:20:05.:20:11.

frame ball easier than this. It only just goes. We have got the

:20:11.:20:15.

perfect picture. We will know if it goes in, before anyone else. No

:20:15.:20:25.
:20:25.:20:35.

Well, he will be disappointed at missing the black, but not

:20:35.:20:40.

disappointed with that 67 break, which should be enough to give him

:20:40.:20:45.

this first frame. He followed that by winning frame five, and is just

:20:45.:20:55.
:20:55.:20:56.

one frame the end, and rejoin the match, live, in frame six. We join

:20:56.:21:06.
:21:06.:21:11.

Jenice -- Dennis and Joan to bring Ryan has just missed what should

:21:11.:21:16.

have been frame ball, which should have been an easy red, but this was

:21:16.:21:23.

the red, he needed this, and a colour, and Mark Selby would have

:21:23.:21:27.

needed a snooker, but that is the type of pot that has been missed

:21:27.:21:33.

all afternoon. Ryan Day has potted all the difficult ones, and all of

:21:33.:21:39.

a sudden, he will miss a sitter. That's definitely should have been

:21:39.:21:46.

4-2. Look at the pot success rate, just 81% for Mark Selby, and Ryan

:21:46.:21:55.

Day has dropped to 79. You have got to be up in the 90s. No really big

:21:55.:22:04.

breaks in the match, so far, 68 for Ryan Day, 67 for Mark Selby. This

:22:04.:22:13.

is a key frame. To open up at two from advantage, at this stage means

:22:13.:22:23.
:22:23.:22:23.

you can relax a little bit -- a two frame advantage. This will bring

:22:23.:22:29.

the difficult pink into play. He has just got to be careful that he

:22:29.:22:35.

gets a good cue ball, and does not bring the red away from the cushion

:22:35.:22:38.

- is he going to double this across, and try to get the snooker behind

:22:38.:22:46.

the pink? No, he has played to free up the pink. Funnily enough, this

:22:46.:22:54.

is the type of shot that Ryan Day has been potting, and Ryan just

:22:54.:23:04.

wanted to bring the pink into play, but, if this long red goes in, he

:23:04.:23:09.

could win the frame. It would be a one night, after missing an easy

:23:09.:23:15.

one, if he were to knock this one in. And look where it has finished.

:23:15.:23:21.

This could be a turning point, if Ryan Day was to lose this. He could

:23:21.:23:31.
:23:31.:23:35.

It is not going to be the easiest clearance. And he will need the

:23:35.:23:40.

clearance, there is no way round it. Even if he takes the black, he

:23:40.:23:44.

needs the six remaining colours. The blues not on its spot, and the

:23:44.:23:54.
:23:54.:23:54.

pink isn't. -- blue is not. He is not absolutely perfect on pink or

:23:54.:24:04.
:24:04.:24:09.

He decided to take a chance and bring the blue into play, and

:24:09.:24:14.

looking at his body language, has he snookered himself? He was going

:24:14.:24:19.

to leave himself a long yellow, unlucky to snooker himself, but

:24:19.:24:24.

that is exactly what he has done. He could a try to get a bit closer

:24:24.:24:30.

to the yellow. I do not blame him for trying to get the blue away,

:24:31.:24:36.

but he can just get to this yellow, but it is important that he gets it

:24:36.:24:46.
:24:46.:24:52.

That is safe enough, but he could be in trouble next time he comes to

:24:52.:25:00.

the table. It was key to make the object ball safe. It is not

:25:00.:25:06.

straightforward to get a snooker from here. He has got the double-

:25:06.:25:12.

kiss, and if he has its mitt the fluke and -- fluked the snooker

:25:12.:25:20.

behind the blue, he is very fortunate. Ryan Day, very fortunate

:25:20.:25:30.
:25:30.:25:32.

there, when he double-kiss that He was trying to leave the white

:25:32.:25:37.

behind the brown and pleaded with side, but, just watch the double-

:25:37.:25:47.
:25:47.:25:51.

kiss. -- played it with side. Two He does not want to hit the green

:25:51.:25:58.

here, and he hasn't, and he has got it safe. He holds his hand up to

:25:58.:26:06.

apologise, but it was a good hit. What was he apologising for?! The

:26:07.:26:16.
:26:17.:26:21.

other man fluked the snooker. could have played is better. Even

:26:21.:26:31.
:26:31.:26:41.

Now, he could be close to potting this. But, why and they should have

:26:41.:26:51.
:26:51.:26:55.

had him in behind the green. -- He has hit that too thinly, but has

:26:55.:27:00.

he put a snooker? It is all happening. Is it going to pull up,

:27:00.:27:07.

though, it hasn't, but, how do you get up onto the green. Ryan Day

:27:07.:27:12.

puffs his cheeks boat. He has got a terrific amount of cueing power,

:27:12.:27:22.
:27:22.:27:47.

and he is going to have to call on He can nick this yellow in, but I

:27:47.:27:55.

don't see how he can get close to the green. Thinner potting angle

:27:55.:28:03.

than he'd have liked. He has got to be careful he does not snooker

:28:03.:28:08.

himself. I don't think he can get close to the green. Has to be

:28:08.:28:14.

careful not to fall in behind the pink. And he has done. That was

:28:14.:28:19.

always a possibility. A further across the table you go, the pink

:28:19.:28:29.
:28:29.:28:37.

and blue are always going to be in Just will points behind, so this is

:28:37.:28:47.
:28:47.:28:54.

an important escape -- just 12 There is enough room round the back

:28:54.:29:04.
:29:04.:29:16.

of the black to hit the green, but There was a chance he can screw

:29:16.:29:20.

back for the brown. It could have been easier. But the pressure on

:29:20.:29:30.
:29:30.:29:32.

this one, John. Quick glance at the scoreboard, green and brown needed.

:29:32.:29:37.

Terrific pot on the green, and this ground, to go 19 points in front,

:29:37.:29:44.

as we see the green disappear. 19 points in front with just 18

:29:44.:29:54.
:29:54.:30:02.

That just about sums up this match, a terrific pot on the green, how

:30:02.:30:12.
:30:12.:30:13.

can he miss that? It is amazing he has missed. I can think of five

:30:13.:30:23.
:30:23.:30:35.

straightforward pots in this match, It will not be a straightforward

:30:35.:30:42.

blue. But what a turning point this frame could free -- could prove to

:30:42.:30:50.

be. Looks to be straight into the corner. He is having the cue ball

:30:50.:30:55.

cleaned because of the way he is going to play the shot. If it is

:30:55.:31:05.
:31:05.:31:05.

dead straight he will run it It couldn't be much straighter than

:31:05.:31:15.
:31:15.:31:16.

that. Just deliver that cue in a straight line, a little movement,

:31:16.:31:20.

he has missed it. That is the way he was cueing earlier in the match.

:31:20.:31:30.
:31:30.:31:30.

He hasn't cued well this afternoon. There is still a chance he could be

:31:30.:31:40.
:31:40.:31:47.

Just this blue needed. He has got the snooker, would you believe it?

:31:47.:31:56.

When you are missing pots by that distance it could go anywhere. Is

:31:56.:32:05.

there a cue doctor in house? Mark Selby is one of the best in the

:32:05.:32:09.

game at escaping from snookers. There is room around the back of

:32:09.:32:17.

the blue, he will have to be spot- on. Where is the blue? Does it past

:32:18.:32:23.

the pink? If not it will be a difficult one up into the corner.

:32:23.:32:33.
:32:33.:32:39.

It doesn't go in there. Another Why he took that hard. He is trying

:32:39.:32:47.

to get the cue ball but on the cushion. If he had played it slow

:32:47.:32:51.

were there was every chance if he got the blue he could get the

:32:51.:32:58.

snooker behind the pink. Been a very strange game, from start to

:32:58.:33:03.

finish. The first game, had a be rack after playing for 15 minutes,

:33:03.:33:13.
:33:13.:33:21.

never really lifted off at all. -- re-rack. The standard has been a

:33:21.:33:27.

very poor. Still very exciting there. If he can hit cushion first,

:33:27.:33:32.

catch the blue and not catch the black, there is a possibility of

:33:32.:33:41.

getting a snooker but he would have to be very precise. He needed to

:33:41.:33:47.

hit it full ball, that wasn't good either. There is an angle here.

:33:47.:33:57.
:33:57.:34:08.

Mark, in the first half, couldn't knock a long ball in. He had five

:34:08.:34:12.

goes at the long pots, missed them all. He has knocked a few in since

:34:12.:34:19.

then, he could do with another one here. He has knocked six long balls

:34:19.:34:29.
:34:29.:34:35.

This is a big shot, and he can win this frame after been 3-0 down, he

:34:35.:34:40.

will be a boost to his confidence. So close, but this time he has left

:34:40.:34:50.

at this. Can you believe it? That was a tremendous shot, shouldn't

:35:57.:35:58.

:35:58.:36:08.
:36:08.:36:09.

He needs plenty of side if he is using two cushions. He just didn't

:36:21.:36:28.

to the right corner and the white will automatically go down to the

:36:28.:36:38.
:36:38.:36:55.

black. What a shot this would be to When Ryan Day potted the blue you

:36:55.:36:59.

could think he had put all the mistakes behind him but it will

:36:59.:37:03.

hurt if he loses this one, it really will, because he has had so

:37:03.:37:13.
:37:13.:37:15.

many chances. Been on the blue, you cannot believe it. Never really

:37:15.:37:25.
:37:25.:37:28.

gave it any care and attention. Pot This is a good shot, I like this

:37:28.:37:34.

shot a lot. Ryan is in trouble, got the full length of the table. If he

:37:34.:37:37.

double sit down towards the right corner pocket he will be hoping to

:37:37.:37:47.
:37:47.:37:47.

He has gone the other side unstuck it over the pocket. Why go down

:37:47.:37:57.
:37:57.:37:57.

Neither player is really at their best. When you're not hitting the

:37:57.:38:03.

ball well, look at the frame time, 45 minutes. It is up and down the

:38:04.:38:13.

table. Mark Selby has got a chance of winning this. He has got a long

:38:13.:38:17.

way to travel if he is to try and get all the way around the table

:38:17.:38:27.
:38:27.:38:36.

and back to the black again, if too He is taking his time. This will

:38:36.:38:46.

:38:55.:39:05.
:39:05.:39:05.

It is OK? Look where that has finished. What a shot he has played

:39:05.:39:14.

there, absolutely incredible. Just having the cue ball cleaned. It was

:39:14.:39:19.

just the knuckle that helped, if he had caught the knuckle a bit

:39:19.:39:23.

sharper he would have stayed in the middle of the table. You get what

:39:23.:39:29.

you deserve sometimes, and Ryan Day had enough chances to win this

:39:29.:39:39.
:39:39.:39:39.

frame and it goes the way of Mark Selby. Ryan Day was 3-0 behind, it

:39:39.:39:49.

What a tense and tight frame that was. To play is not at their best

:39:49.:39:53.

but it still provides entertaining snooker. I think what has happened

:39:53.:39:58.

in this UK championship, used to be best of 17, a lot more breathing

:39:58.:40:02.

space for the match itself, all of a sudden everything is magnified,

:40:02.:40:07.

the pressure, a couple of big names, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Judd Trump, out

:40:07.:40:11.

of it, everybody is feeling the heat, desperate to win. You could

:40:11.:40:15.

see Mark Selby's reaction, he has fought his way back in even though

:40:15.:40:18.

he doesn't feel that great out there.

:40:18.:40:22.

And it manifests itself, the pressure does, in mistakes we are

:40:22.:40:27.

seeing from both players. This is such a terrible error from Ryan Day,

:40:27.:40:32.

potted the blue, only trying to drop the pink over the hole but why

:40:32.:40:38.

don't you just make sure. He has left Mark Selby a chance. He is

:40:38.:40:42.

playing unbelievable snooker from this position. Ryan Day knows he

:40:42.:40:46.

should have just potted that pink. Look at this. Played two of the

:40:46.:40:51.

best shot of the match. This is the first one, absolutely perfect, and

:40:51.:40:57.

not easy to escape from this position either. Have a look at the

:40:57.:41:04.

next job, the pink, the black, one of the best shots -- next shot. The

:41:04.:41:12.

cue ball has got to travel so much distance, look at this. 1, 2, 3,

:41:12.:41:16.

four cushions and right in behind the black. Mark Selby, although he

:41:16.:41:22.

is not playing at his best, what he does do is tries so hard, such a

:41:22.:41:28.

great safety game, very difficult to beat. A I had written down 4-22

:41:28.:41:38.
:41:38.:41:40.

Ryan Day, its sell be in trouble. -- 4-2. One has been given a

:41:40.:41:45.

reprieve, the other one is thinking, what have I done? Widened I play

:41:45.:41:52.

the pink and get it even closer? -- why didn't I eat. You wonder if it

:41:52.:41:57.

is the right time for somebody to walk out, Ryan Day did go out, but

:41:57.:42:01.

you want to clear your head. For Mike dash for Mark Selby, he comes

:42:01.:42:08.

back and says I have not played great, but it is 3-3, every chance,

:42:08.:42:11.

effectively in the ascendancy. We have seen fluctuations in

:42:11.:42:16.

fortunes in a lot of matches so far this year. For Mark Selby, having

:42:16.:42:20.

not played well, to be on level terms, will help -- he be feeling

:42:20.:42:24.

better than Ryan Day? He is going to walk into that arena feeling 10

:42:25.:42:28.

ft tall, you saw how much it meant him, banging the table after

:42:28.:42:32.

potting the black, sometimes when you are playing badly, a frame that

:42:32.:42:35.

that can completely change the match, it could be the complete

:42:36.:42:39.

turnaround and also for yourself as well, because it gives you more

:42:39.:42:43.

impetus, it makes you feel stronger, and he will be coming out firing on

:42:43.:42:46.

all cylinders. When we talk about how Mark has

:42:46.:42:50.

played in this match, we are judging over a short space of time,

:42:50.:42:55.

it is not to say Mark Selby is not in form, he is having a bad day and

:42:55.:42:58.

this happens on a regular basis to all players. He doesn't need much

:42:58.:43:04.

for the top players to kick-start a bit of a run, a few century breaks

:43:04.:43:06.

and they are playing brilliantly again.

:43:06.:43:12.

We saw yesterday with Matthew Stevens and Marco Fu, Marco Fu made

:43:12.:43:15.

it charged comeback, Matthew Stevens, just that one shot, the

:43:15.:43:20.

plant, a couple of shots, a fantastic clearance, changed the

:43:20.:43:26.

whole complexion of the match. Interesting watching the statistics

:43:26.:43:31.

of the long pot success. Mark Selby was a represent, O'Brien day had

:43:31.:43:36.

quite a significant long-range success. -- Ryan Day. As the match

:43:37.:43:40.

has gone on it is more balanced. Mark Selby has gone slightly into

:43:41.:43:44.

the ascendancy. It is not really the whole story of

:43:44.:43:48.

the match, but it gives you a bit of a guide to some part of the game.

:43:48.:43:53.

It is about when you need to pot the balls, the big shots, the ones

:43:54.:43:58.

we all cat, how far away from the pocket there, under pressure we saw

:43:58.:44:02.

Mark Williams played that slow, long blue into the pocket, quite a

:44:02.:44:12.
:44:12.:44:14.

He could have predicted at the end of that frame it would be 3-3? The

:44:14.:44:19.

score between Mark Selby and Ryan Day at the moment. As we rejoin

he looked like he was going to run out of position. You have got to

:49:14.:49:19.

I think spending five minutes out of the arena in between frames has

cleared his head, I think that is what he was doing after that

previous frame. Should there be a time limit in between frames? Like

This is just what the doctor ordered for Ryan Day. Now, he has

:11:06.:11:16.
:11:16.:11:36.

He's going to have to push through You never sure where they're going

:11:36.:11:42.

to go but you never expect one to well over either corner pocket.

:11:42.:11:52.
:11:52.:11:52.

This is a key shot. Yes, he is not perfect on the red by any means.

:11:52.:12:02.
:12:02.:12:25.

He cannot afford any more mistakes. He has been in situations like this,

:12:25.:12:29.

where it looks like he has caught the frame at his mercy, and he has

:12:29.:12:35.

missed a ball you did not expect. I was not wishing it on him, I can

:12:35.:12:41.

assure you, but that is the way that it has gone all afternoon.

:12:41.:12:45.

Something he is going to have to think about and work on, because he

:12:45.:12:54.

is such a talented player. For some reason, he misses the ones you do

:12:54.:13:04.
:13:04.:13:09.

He played that with a lot of side to Wall don for the black and he

:13:09.:13:19.
:13:19.:13:23.

almost missed it. Gravity helped, But, the way he has played in that

:13:23.:13:28.

two previous frames, you can see him knocking in quite a few. He's

:13:28.:13:31.

one of those players who does not have any problems closing the match

:13:31.:13:41.
:13:41.:13:42.

out. Just trying to analyse this match, the first half of the match

:13:42.:13:51.

was poor snooker, particularly from Mark Selby. I just wonder whether

:13:51.:13:56.

Ryan was psyched up, found himself 3-0 in front without doing anything,

:13:56.:14:00.

without having to play too well, and it is a strange thing to say,

:14:00.:14:08.

but he thought, if I go through the motions, I am bound to win, then

:14:08.:14:11.

they ought careless shot, particularly the one where Mark

:14:11.:14:17.

needed a snooker, that was unforgivable. Yes, Mark has won the

:14:17.:14:21.

last five frames after losing the opening three. It has been a

:14:21.:14:31.
:14:31.:14:39.

But, the thing is, if you win the match, you have a chance to improve

:14:40.:14:45.

for the next one, if you lose, you just go home, back to the practice

:14:45.:14:49.

table. If he was to lose this match, and that is more than likely that

:14:49.:14:56.

he will, it would be a body blow to Ryan Day. He is such a good player.

:14:56.:15:05.

He has let himself down today, and he will know that. It is worth

:15:05.:15:08.

showing it again. He has tried to roll the pink over the pocket

:15:08.:15:17.

instead of making sure of the pot, at 4-2 in front. And really, since

:15:17.:15:25.

then, it has been one way traffic. And that can happen when you letter

:15:25.:15:34.

play it off the hook, somehow, you don't seem to get back in again. He

:15:34.:15:40.

has had a kick, there, and he is not on the red as nicely as he

:15:40.:15:46.

would like. The black jump off the spot, there. He can still pot the

:15:46.:15:52.

red next to the pink. It just means he has got to use the pink on the

:15:52.:16:01.

way through. It should be OK. Not a straight forward run to the winning

:16:01.:16:11.
:16:11.:16:35.

Ryan, sat in his seat, suffering. That was an excellent shot by Mark,

:16:35.:16:43.

judging from the reaction from the pink. You mentioned before, about

:16:43.:16:47.

confidence. When you get confidence, you believe things are going to go

:16:47.:16:57.
:16:57.:16:58.

well for you. As we said, with a bit of help from his opponent, Mark

:16:58.:17:05.

Selby is now in full swing. And you tend to see things more clearly,

:17:05.:17:15.
:17:15.:17:18.

you do not see any obstacles in I think he is OK, he has got a

:17:18.:17:24.

slight angle on this red, not much of an angle. All reds pot, so he

:17:24.:17:31.

might take the one to the white which is slightly more difficult. -

:17:31.:17:37.

- to the right. He could get the white away from the cushion

:17:37.:17:41.

somewhat, and screw back for the pink, and if he does not he is

:17:41.:17:46.

looking at the black. He might have a slight angle just to get it away

:17:46.:17:52.

from the cushion, the cue ball, but, looking at that, not much angle to

:17:52.:18:00.

work with. He needs these two or three remaining reds to clinch

:18:00.:18:10.
:18:10.:18:16.

Just not quite far enough on the blue. He can still play the pink,

:18:16.:18:21.

but the pink is a much more difficult pot. It was a very

:18:21.:18:26.

positive shot. He knew that if he screwed back, he was getting the

:18:26.:18:36.
:18:36.:18:38.

I like that side on shot now, don't you? It gives you a different feel

:18:38.:18:48.
:18:48.:18:55.

all the shots that are being played. -- feel of the shots. He did not

:18:55.:18:59.

want to leave the half ball pot, he has a decided to leave himself the

:19:00.:19:07.

straight one. If we look at the score, red-colour-red needed. He

:19:07.:19:14.

just needs to pot the red and he is bound to be on the black, and, can

:19:14.:19:20.

he cute straight? Ryan knows that this could be the end of the match,

:19:20.:19:30.
:19:30.:19:36.

here. -- cue it straight. That is the type of shot early on in the

:19:36.:19:41.

match you would not fancy him to knock in, but there it went, clean

:19:41.:19:50.

as a whistle, and just this black needed. Can you believe it? Frame

:19:50.:19:58.

ball! No pressure. He gets down and he misses an absolute sitter.

:19:58.:20:06.

Surely not another twist! Amazing, absolutely amazing. Lifeline for

:20:06.:20:16.
:20:16.:20:18.

It is a lifeline he would not have expected. Now, can we see another

:20:18.:20:27.

twist? Mark Selby cannot look. He cannot believe it. He will have to

:20:27.:20:36.

go across the table, he could screwed directly up onto the yellow.

:20:36.:20:43.

He cannot believe the black he has missed. Can he hold himself

:20:43.:20:53.
:20:53.:20:55.

together and keep his hopes alive? Needs the five remaining colours.

:20:55.:21:03.

He pots the pink to go 7 in front, Sweeney's the black. Mark Selby,

:21:03.:21:13.
:21:13.:21:23.

still shaking his head in disbelief. That is the only thing that could

:21:23.:21:33.
:21:33.:21:39.

have gone wrong for me. But he is The pink will put him seven points

:21:39.:21:46.

in front, so he needs pink and black to cash in on that

:21:46.:21:56.
:21:56.:21:56.

unbelievable miss from Mark. Got a slightly heavy contact. He is not

:21:56.:22:00.

straight on the black. You would not expect him to miss, but after

:22:00.:22:08.

what has happened, take nothing for granted. But it's there, now calmer

:22:09.:22:14.

could that be another turning point. It looks certain that Mark Silver

:22:14.:22:18.

was going to book his place in the quarter final at he missed an easy

:22:18.:22:22.

black off the spot, and threw a lifeline to Ryan Day, he is just

:22:22.:22:30.

one frame behind, 5-4, what as we do happen next? The shift in

:22:30.:22:35.

momentum so far in so many frames has been incredible. On the brink

:22:35.:22:39.

of clinching a match he should not have been involved in at some stage,

:22:39.:22:45.

you have got to say that that was a moment of panic or pension and it

:22:45.:22:49.

can build up at any moment in that frame. He had done all the hard

:22:49.:22:56.

work, really, except he had to pot this black and get on the red.

:22:56.:23:01.

of us have been Ms -- guilty of missing blacks at crucial times in

:23:01.:23:05.

the career, but for a Mark Selby, that will be why he's very

:23:06.:23:09.

disappointed with. A completely different player, since winning

:23:09.:23:15.

that frame when he needed a snooker, he has made a big break, 99, than a

:23:15.:23:19.

century, he looked like he was going to clean up, he took his eye

:23:19.:23:23.

off the black with a little bit of pressure, and a great clearance

:23:23.:23:29.

from Ryan Day in N. What happens in a break as you get closer to them

:23:29.:23:34.

winning line, the pressure builds up. If you are in a great trainer

:23:34.:23:40.

mind you don't feel at, but as you get closer and closer, the break he

:23:40.:23:45.

started off with was superb, getting closer to the winning line,

:23:45.:23:51.

he knocks the red in, good shot, now, he is on the black, he has

:23:51.:23:56.

done all the hard work, he knows he should win, and that is when he

:23:56.:24:02.

misses. You were talking about when Mark Selby got the lifeline in

:24:02.:24:05.

frame six, produce the great snooker and that pink, got in and

:24:05.:24:10.

cleared up from there, he felt a renewed sense of confidence that to

:24:10.:24:14.

come two frames clear. Does it Ryan Day now have the momentum and

:24:15.:24:21.

confidence? He will come back out thinking he has been thrown a

:24:21.:24:25.

lifeline when you look completely depleted in his chair. It looked

:24:25.:24:28.

like Mark Selby was going to clear up, but now, the pressure and the

:24:28.:24:34.

momentum has swung back. He still has it all to do, but he will be

:24:34.:24:40.

relieved, he has put a lifeline. This match has aired and flowed

:24:40.:24:49.

each way. Incredible, the amateur twist so far. And the sea or a in

:24:49.:24:52.

indulging himself and feeling sorry for themselves and shaking it off

:24:52.:24:57.

as he steps on to the table to break off? Yes, you can see from

:24:57.:25:05.

that shot, he is not totally over it. The onus was effectively on

:25:05.:25:10.

Marks will be to win, but he has got a couple more chances. You try

:25:10.:25:15.

not to let players off the hook, but he has done that, and now, it

:25:15.:25:25.
:25:25.:25:28.

is up to ride a to see if he can This red is on and there is a gap

:25:28.:25:38.
:25:38.:25:45.

He went full blooded into trying to develop the black. If he had played

:25:46.:25:54.

it plain ball, he could have got back around the table. A very

:25:54.:26:00.

positive shot, trying to flick the red away from the black, and he has

:26:00.:26:07.

got away with it, so that is an indication that the rub of the ball

:26:07.:26:17.
:26:17.:26:20.

is now in Ryan Day's favour. He has just rattled a little bit after

:26:20.:26:26.

what happened in the previous frame, this was the shot that could happen

:26:26.:26:35.

to like in the quarter final, and that was his reaction. Now, a

:26:35.:26:45.
:26:45.:26:46.

couple of long pots, which Ryan has not converted. I just detected Ryan

:26:46.:26:51.

:26:51.:27:01.
:27:01.:27:10.

not pushing through the cue in a That was an attacking safety,

:27:10.:27:16.

purposefully opening up the reds. Ryan Day now needs a good safety.

:27:16.:27:22.

He may try to get behind the green, it depends how he fancies playing

:27:22.:27:32.
:27:32.:27:40.

it. This looks to be a good line. Good length, good shot. Sometimes,

:27:40.:27:46.

when there are mistakes, it makes it a lot more exciting. It is nice

:29:00.:29:07.

he has got to play better than he has shown so far. He has had a

couple of goes at long pots in this frame already. That was half a

:29:12.:29:16.

chance, and sometimes, half a chance is all that you're going to

:29:16.:29:26.
:29:26.:29:39.

It is giving Mark Selby some more time to forget what happened in the

:29:39.:29:43.

previous frame. If Ryan had just got down to potting balls, it could

:29:44.:29:48.

have been worse for Mark Selby. This is a pretty good shot if he

:29:58.:29:58.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 51 seconds

:29:58.:30:41.

Not the most telling of safety shot. Because of the red near the baulk

He may well have done that, if he has it is an excellent shot. I

possibility of rolling up to the red by the right side cushion,

:31:25.:31:29.

looking to see what is available into the left corner, I don't think

there is much, they are all covering each other. That is why he

Giving it plenty of thinking time. If he has got away with that he's

:32:40.:32:46.

very fortunate because he has made a complete mess of it in the end.

:32:46.:32:50.

Looking to see whether next colour is. The green is near the corner

:32:50.:32:56.

pocket. Love to be able to get on the black. How do you, from that

:32:56.:33:03.

situation? Unless he can roll the red in the left corner and the

:33:03.:33:09.

black goes in the right corner. He is playing a deep screw, going back

:53:04.:53:09.

have got to feel sorry for Ryan Day, he had this match in the palm of

:53:09.:53:15.

his hand and he played a couple of very careless shots, the one where

:53:15.:53:22.

he left the pink. It hasn't been the best match but a very exciting

:53:22.:53:28.

match. Mark Selby when he was 3-0 behind that like he was a long way

:53:28.:53:38.
:53:38.:53:39.

back, he came back and finished up, it took the match 6-4.

:53:39.:53:42.

He is through to the quarter finals for only the third time in his

:53:42.:53:46.

career. For a few moments the result was in doubt.

:53:46.:53:51.

He was made to work. You have to take your hat off to Mark Selby, 3-

:53:51.:53:56.

0 down, wasn't playing his best, but he stuck in. A great all-round

:53:56.:54:01.

game, never gives up, he is a great trier, even when things aren't

going his way he is still hard to put away but Ryan Day will be very

disappointed. T win these big tournaments you

level, looking at Ryan Day's performance, you are judged by

:54:27.:54:31.

winning and winning only. It doesn't matter how good you are.

:54:31.:54:37.

All the players in this tournament of fantastic. They are great

important questions, and I applying the right shot at the right time

:54:59.:55:04.

and he took the lifeline. What a great snooker that was.

:55:04.:55:09.

That was the turning point, Ryan should have won it way before that.

:55:09.:55:12.

Even with the pink he was struggling and didn't get anywhere

:55:12.:55:17.

near the pocket and left me half a chance. I still managed to play a

:55:17.:55:20.

great shot. Take is through the early part of

:55:20.:55:25.

the match, 3-0 down. I am trying to forget about that.

:55:25.:55:29.

Because I want to go out there and win so bad I go out and try to hard

:55:29.:55:33.

from the start instead of trying to relax, and that is what happened.

:55:33.:55:40.

The harder I was trying the worse it was getting. I fell behind 3-1,

:55:40.:55:45.

got the frame to go 3-3, I got momentum.

:55:45.:55:48.

And we sit in the studio and put ourselves in a position, he has had

a lifeline, Ryan looks like he's going 4-2 up, it you win that,

:55:53.:55:56.

you're the one with the confidence and Ryan is the one struggling to

find fluency. It seems to reverse, I know he has

:57:27.:57:30.

On paper the bottom half of the draw in the tournament looks

extremely difficult. You potentially have Neil Robertson or

to lose, and he's a precocious talent who can go very far in this

:15:55.:15:58.

An amazing turnaround. He struggled to pot a ball in the opening three

would have liked but, if he hits it well, he will be on two reds. This

:18:13.:18:23.
:18:23.:18:40.

Not the best. You would still fancy him potting it, but he would have

:18:40.:18:46.

to play a cannon that he didn't have to play before. Negotiated.

:18:46.:18:56.
:18:56.:19:21.

Quite rightly, just taking his time and trying to keep it as simple as

:19:21.:19:31.

possible. Shaking his head, there, for some reason. He must have ended

:19:31.:19:34.

up straight on the black, but I don't think that is a problem at

all. It should not be a problem to Luca. He has a big area to leave

going to get another shot. This is a chance he was not expecting. Has

:20:38.:20:48.

I cannot believe Luca didn't win the match at that visit. If you

think he might be coming close to you, play harder, but not the place

:21:07.:21:15.

where you can leave yourself next to the red. Will he live to regret

:21:15.:21:25.
:21:25.:21:27.

that? Mark King is under pressure, and he's a very good player. He

:21:28.:21:32.

could play the cross double knowing that blue or above is enough to

:21:32.:21:40.

take the frame. Or, does he go all out to play the pot? He has got to

:21:40.:21:46.

get a colour, remember. He has had a look at the potting angle which

:21:46.:21:56.
:21:56.:22:00.

Just when he needed a bit of luck he got it, because it could have

:22:00.:22:10.
:22:10.:22:20.

:23:38.:23:42.

Brecel. He knows now that he is in the quarter-finals of a ranking

:23:42.:23:49.

event for the first time. Mark King has just not been at the races

:23:49.:23:58.

today. The young man from Belgium is going to be playing in his first

:23:58.:24:02.

quarter final against Shaun Murphy. Stunning display from the teenager,

:24:02.:24:06.

the youngest-ever player to make it through to the quarter finals of

:24:06.:24:10.

the UK Championship. He is fresh to the snooker scene but is starting

:24:10.:24:14.

to fulfil the huge weight of expectation that has been placed on

:24:15.:24:19.

him for some time now. We might have lost Judd Trump early on in

:24:19.:24:24.

the tournament but there is a new, young snooker star in town, and his

:24:24.:24:29.

young snooker star in town, and his name is Luca Brecel. The first two

:24:29.:24:35.

frames were so but they wanted to go home. -- so bad, I wanted to go

:24:36.:24:40.

on, but then just in one frame, everything changed. Mark was

:24:40.:24:46.

getting a little bit nervous, I think. Tremendous result for the

:24:46.:24:50.

tournament and for the sport, we have got another big name, another

:24:50.:24:55.

young big name. Without doubt the best player Belgium has produced.

:24:55.:25:01.

It has been a long time coming. It is tough for overseas countries to

:25:01.:25:05.

produce the quantity of players needed to get a good one, but he is

:25:05.:25:10.

a dangerous player. He is now the youngest-ever quarter-finalist, of

:25:10.:25:15.

course Ronnie O'Sullivan won it as a 17-year-old in 1993. There will

:25:15.:25:19.

be comparisons with all sorts of players for Luca Brecel, but it is

:25:19.:25:22.

not something he is going to take on board, because he has not got

:25:23.:25:28.

that much to lose. Absolutely. In every match he is gaining a lot

:25:28.:25:35.

more experience. There should be no expectation. Purely expectation

:25:35.:25:42.

would be that which he puts himself under. He's certainly going to go

:25:42.:25:45.

long way in the game. Whether that is in this tournament remains to be

:25:45.:25:50.

seen, but he's going to be having a tough match against Shaun Murphy.

:25:50.:25:56.

How do you see that one going? Shaun Murphy is probably a stronger

:25:56.:26:01.

player. And he is looking to win the event. But it is always

:26:01.:26:05.

difficult when you play a younger player. It can always go wrong for

:26:05.:26:12.

you, so Shaun Murphy will be on his mettle, I would imagine. Luca

:26:12.:26:16.

Brecel is still making a name for himself, and is doing a good job of

:26:16.:26:22.

that so far. This evening, the last two matches of the last 16, John

The two men who are generally favourites, John Higgins and Neil

:27:09.:27:13.

Robertson arc in action tonight. First, Higgins against Davis, how

:27:13.:27:19.

do you expect that going? You would expect the big names to get through,

:27:19.:27:25.

but both players are in the same position. Good friends and practice

:27:25.:27:30.

partners, but up against it, up against two great champions and you

:27:30.:27:38.

never know - they around the great chance. -- are in with a great

:27:38.:27:45.

chance. John Higgins has been doing well in the PTC events. That is a

:27:45.:27:50.

good yardstick Aster your general form, and they think his general

:27:50.:27:55.

former's higher than it was last year. He looks to be back on the

:27:55.:28:01.

crest of a wave. Why would not put it past him to win a big event on

:28:01.:28:06.

the television during the season, but he is up against a good player.

:28:06.:28:13.

Mark Davis is established now, as a player. And, Neil Robertson is

:28:13.:28:19.

getting into that elite category. Absolutely. He is going to try to

:28:19.:28:23.

keep that going. He is the one to beat in this tournament, on form,

:28:23.:28:31.

alone. Neil Robertson, the man to beat, the you think, Steve? When

:28:31.:28:37.

John Higgins is on form, he is still the one to beat. Thank you at

home for watching. Hazel Irvine will be here tonight at 10 past 11
