If you have missed your regular fix of Friday night to rugby, the wait

is over. We kick off tonight here, it is life on the home of Ulster

rugby, BBC Northern Ireland. Lots to look forward to in this new

season. Plenty of new players and a new Ulster coach a. New Zealander

mock are scum -- Mark Anscombe, at a date is his first competitive

game in charge, kick-off in five Good evening, welcome to Ulster

rugby life. It is good to be back for around one of this season's

Rabo Direct Pro 12. Joining me, a former European Cup winner Tony

McWhirter. Both of these teams had a pretty good year last year. They

have both changed their coaches, which has created a lot of

discussion and debate. Does that put the new men in charge under

more pressure to deliver early on? A I think it does, and in the

opening game in particular. A home game a for Mark Anscombe, unbeaten

in pre-season, but Gregor Townsend was an interesting selection for

Glasgow. It caused a big stir in Scotland, it is up to him to prove

himself in his first our position as a coach. What have you made of

the Ulster team, a mix of experience and youth? A I think

Mark Anscombe is going with the form players from pre-season, a mix

of youth and experience. It will be interesting to see how the front

five go. I think they will look to have a go at Glasgow this evening.

Some of the young players which he was putting in, they have performed

very well for him pre-season, and he has stuck by them tonight, which

is interesting. I think it is a great call. He has gone out and

said it, if you perform in pre- season I will pay queue. As a new

coach coming in, it gives everybody a chance to perform. You are

talking about Chris Farrell, Michael Heaney, is great to see

Jared Payne as well. A nice bit of into play here. - Margaret

interplay. A lot of youth, I think the average age at the back line is

21, Jared Payne is the oldest at 26. Another new signing for Ulster,

bringing a lot of physicality, the New Zealander Nick Williams. We

know that physicality is what it is all about. He worked under Mark

Anscombe before, he does bring a big presence. What I have been

hearing about in researching this game is that he has physicality,

but also the technical side of the game. He still has some work to do

against Newcastle here, he scores a good try. He will be an important

ball-carrier denied. Even though this is a pretty young Ulster team,

will they be expected to deliver this early in the season? I think

every Ravenhill crowd expects that, they have a good record at home,

Glasgow have always pushed us hard at Ravenhill as well, let's not

forget, but I think they should be looking to win this quite

comfortably. Let's hear from the director of rugby, David Humphreys.

What I your initial impressions of Mark Anscombe? Her he has done very

well, he has come in, a new voice, we had a productive for pre-season,

some good results in the Friendly's, and so far everything has gone well.

But from now on are the important games, we will really find out how

well pre-season has gone. Those new faces, should be a good night?

enter the season with a huge degree of optimism and enthusiasm. There

are a number of players tonight who are playing their first games,

someone like Jared Payne, who missed most a last season with

injury. I think we will see some exciting players coming through, it

is great for us now. As a former fly-half, and exciting back line as

well? Last week we finished off with an all Ulster back line, under

the age of 22, which is fantastic, grit to the work going through our

schools and academies. Tonight, a bit more pressure, the weather is

not looking great. It will be a test. Enjoyed tonight.

What does he mean, the weather is not looking great! It is a perfect

night for a game of rugby. A bit more interest in this game because

these teams are paired in the European Cup as well? I think that

is a side issue, I think by the time it comes around, these teams

will have changed an awful lot as well. We are looking to get that

initial mark for later on. Thanks for now, the last time these teams

met, Glasgow won, but it is a clean slate tonight. Time to join our

in, will it be a football season? We will have to see. Gregor

Townsend has based -- picked a big but the pitch isn't very good

condition indeed. Glasgow come here in the knowledge that they haven't

one at Ravenhill since almost three years ago. A big level of

expectation on the shoulders of this Ulster side. By no means the

game? He has. He has been limping quite badly. But the one thing he

has given Ulster is to go forward. He has fought hard for the initial

yards. The problem Ulster have had is that we have struggled to

generate quick ball to get the backs into it. That only started to

develop later. The physical, going forward. He has the ability to

offload. That is where he is at his strongest. He picks up here and

goes again. It was an excellent tackle by v Glasgow second row that

ball and he would not expect that from him because he is a good ball

carrier. He does not look the epitome of fitness, but when he

gets the ball, he makes good yards. He is forcing Glasgow to make the

of talent. What have you made of the Glasgow set piece? Not quite

functioning. This is an attacking line-out. Glasgow settled into a

communication. That frustrates coaches like Gregor Townsend.

Because this is an attacking platform. The line-out ball stolen

functioning, but the Ulster line- out was efficient. Rob Herring

doing a good job. He has been impressive and very active.

Throwing to the tail of the line- out. It is difficult to do. Thrown

to the back of the line-out to generate the ball and get it into

midfield. So that Niall O'Connor and others. As the half has gone on.

We have increase the pressure at scrum time and we are getting

dominant there. How crucial will The balance of the whole class go

scrum is really under pressure. I would be attacking that Glasgow's

scrum, putting them under pressure, because that is what led to the

Ulster try at the end of the first half to stop before we look at that,

stride, they started recycling the ball nicely. The key to it is

generating quick ball, if you are able to do that, therewill come.

reasonably quick recycled ball, but watch this attack from a Jared

Payne. Good depth from the outside backs, a good call, and Michael

Allen goes over the line. The key is that good, fast ball. Absolutely

crucial. This reminds me, when you're on a training field, this is

the kind of move that you practice. Pick up, penetrate, recycle the

ball. Stretch the defence. It was a very, very good carry. I love to T

switch of angle here, but Michael Allen had a all the space in the

world. A well-worked try. That will give Ulster, but Ince. When you see

that kind of play, that is what Ulster will want to do. As we said

before the start of the programme, it is like a new signing for them,

Jared Payne. It has been a hard battle back from injury. When

you're relying on him to give you that turn of speed, which it

outside back needs, you can see the confidence which he gives his two

winners. Whenever you have a Rolls Royce of a full back, it gives you

that confidence. Michael Allen has done very well there, but easy at

that stage to get over on the pass, he kept his depth there. Time to

find out a bit more about the new Ulster coach, Mark Anscombe. He is

the former New Zealand Under 20 coach, and arrived here with a

pretty no-nonsense attitude. But he He is very specific in what he

wants. He wants to play more free- flowing rugby, I think. The focus

this year it is getting the team some quick balls. He has brought a

very hands-on approach to training. It is funny that I get told

regularly we are doing a lot of contact, I don't think we have been.

You know my philosophy for that is his -- at it is a contact game. You

have to be able to make the right decisions in the game. I'm excited

by the Endeavour, the attitude and the way they have gone about their

work. We still have to work, they are by no means there yet. The easy

part is the training and the pre- season, now we will see how they

about the people, they are young men, they are learning, some have

been around longer than others. It is about giving them some direction
