Cardiff Blues v Ulster Ulster Rugby Live

As the team captain put it this week, the show must go on. So they

have arrived in Cardiff and taken the field on what will doubtless be

a difficult evening for all concerned. That is the Cardiff

Blues against Ulster, a live act seven a 5:00pm. Welcome to the

programme. We will be off to Cardiff Arms Park for full and

uninterrupted coverage. Joining me in the studio, Tony. What is going

to be an impossibly difficult evening for Ulster. How does the

squad approach of this? Are it will be exceptionally emotional for the

player. -- players. They're saying that this is what Nevin Spence

would have wanted. They have to go out and play their rugby again.

Many tributes have been paid today. I suppose the best tribute Ulster

can pay the Spencer family is to go out and perform. First and foremost.

We are looking for a lot of passion, a lot of pride, but we have

discussed this, they have to play with a smile on their face. Enjoy

it. But this is the big opportunity, this is what they get paid for.

Make Nevin Spence proud. The great rugby global family has wrapped

itself around Ulster in this past week, in this time of crisis, and a

few minutes ago, David Humphreys paid this tribute to the support.

It has been issued it comfort farce and for the family. -- comfort for

us. I think the whole rugby community has made it easier for us

to get back on and play rugby tonight. You are back on the field

for the first time since the tragedy, what frame of mind up are

the boys in? If you listen to what Rory Best and Mark Anscombe said in

the last few days, they have summed it up well. After the memorial

service, the players got a chance to meet the Spencer family, and the

attitude they brought to it was the attitude that they have to go out

and play again. That has been a huge inspiration for all of us.

What would be a great tribute to him denied? It is more than a

tribute, and every time reports on an Ulster Jersey for the rest of

the season, all our thoughts will go to in Nevin Spence's family.

Tonight is the first step, back into playing rugby, it is what we

are all looking forward to. could sense the focus there. The

last few words he used, looking forward to it. What has gone on in

the last week or two, this evening we see the return of Tommy Bowe.

How significant is that, for the first time since 2008? It is good

to see him back after surgery. is great for him to get some game

time, with the Heineken Cup coming up, and the autumn international

series as well. Tommy is an international, world-class player.

No surprise to you that he was thrown straight in, not just on the

bench? He may get 60 minutes out of bed, they have Craig Gilroy it on

the bench. Mark Anscombe has a good quality set of backs. In terms of

leaders tonight, no Rory Best, no Johann Muller, no Stephen there is,

how will it impact? I think the other side of that is that Mark

Anscombe has rotated again. I think it will be interesting to look at

Iain Henderson. Big things are expected of him, it is his first

chance to put a marker down. Ulster, unbeaten. Do you anticipate that

will be the case in a couple of hours' time? A I hope so, I think

the emotion of the occasion will drive them over the line. It will

be tight, it is very hard to win in Cardiff as we know over 20 years,

but I think Ulster will win. I will go along with that. I think there

is enough riding in this to see us home. I think we have too much in

the tank for Cardiff. Let's hand U2 our match commentary team, that is

Chris Henry leads the Ulster side out, there is a man who hasn't

played in an Ulster shirts since May 2008, Tommy Bowe. Plenty of

Ulster support here, needless to say. Chris Henry captains the side.

couple of years there. Good continuity there. Ulster, again

guilty of giving away possession. A good passage of play by the home

advantage. I guess understandably, Ulster have made a rather nervous

start. It will be difficult for them to get 100% concentration

given the events of the last week or so. They are trying to get back

into that mindset over match day, having such a good start to the

season, they will have to try and refocus. We have seen from Cardiff,

once they start breaking those tackles, the good quality

possession, they have the ammunition out wide to cause some

damage. Auster will be to make sure they get those tackles -- Ulster

stint in the southern hemisphere, still fairly heavily strapped. A

is a good squeeze by Ulster. A very good Ulster scrum. The referee is

Ulster have opted for the scrummage. That is interesting. They have the

choice of a shot at goal. But they obviously feel that their scrum is

sufficiently dominant. It is all down to those men in the front row.

again. Cardiff are creaking in the scrum and Ulster really must get

something from this. I am sure that the tight forwards will be looking

the try. I think he might have gone over on his leg. That was a good

talented youngster. But he twisted himself awkwardly in the process of

scoring the try. His ankle got caught up as he went over. Ulster

will be very happy that they have got that try. They have responded

very well to the early dominance of the Cardiff players. He was held at

A lot of people feel that Tom James should never earned more than the

10 international caps so far for Wales. Plenty of pace, plenty of

called forward, but it is exciting stuff. Both teams playing with the

real intent, looking for the offload. It was, probably

justifiable. A tough call. But that intent, the offloading coming from

both sides is certainly making an entertaining spectacle. A lot of

errors, but a lot of entertaining bit of a work over there. Jamie

Roberts, a lot of speculation about where he's going to be playing his

the scrum down. When your scrum is disintegrating, it is amazing how

scored. They have gone back to the halfway line. That looks a bit more

his feed. Having seen the replay, difficult to tell at that speed,

best thing to do with a man that size. Cardiff are getting ever

Again, Dan Tuohy has to make that tackle. That is taken by Chris

Henry. Good pressure by a cadre. What a belting tackle by Ulster's

around for Cardiff. Jared Payne get it away. And gets it away quite

magnificent there. What a clearance kick by Jared Payne. Cardiff take

it quickly. The referee says in no. The feature of that passage of play

was the one on one tackling by Ulster. Dan Tuohy running around

when his feet were inside the field of play. That is why they were

brought back. Williams and Tuohy. Tom James will feel that for a day

An attacking advantage could have been applied to that situation.

This has been a hugely physical and greatly entertaining game. Cardiff

have a player down at the moment. they have acquitted themselves well.

The key feature has been their ability to offload in the tackles.

There are players coming from depth and allied with the dominance of

they have enjoyed at the scrums has given them this dominant position.

Jason Tovey, unfortunately, looks set to be quite badly shaken. He is

going to leave the field. Having started the game particularly well,

kicking three penalties in the opening quarter, Jason Tovey has

had to leave the field and is being awkwardly indeed. Tom Court grabbed

- nothing wrong with that, but just an unfortunate twist. Jason Tovey

is off the field. Bennett the meantime, Cardiff could not manage

their line-out. -- emir the against Tom Court for driving the

scrum up. We did not really need to do that. Unusual to see a political

that way against a scrum that has been dominating all the half. I am

sure there Cardiff will be a relieved it to try to finish it

Nick Williams was a real catalyst. Of let's take a look at the start

under pressure. It was understandable. They have not

trained for the week of the funeral and they have not been together

this week. This was a gold edged opportunity. You do not expect Sam

Warburton bitter knock-on from there. -- to knock on. Jared Payne

has common. That has come from the coaching. Someone has picked up on

that and brought somebody in who is better under a high ball. They have

been able to catch the next two or three bad taken the pressure off.

has been one dubious decision from the referee. What is impressive for

similar to the try against Glasgow a few weeks ago. You can see how it

is beginning to take shape on the field. He has realised that his

weight has gradually taken him to the try-line. He has been able to

successfully trap the ball down. That shows the rate awareness.

empting the situation. It would have been easy for somebody to have

it should have been. Somebody should have had a word. Both of you

are of opinion that Nigel Owens, a vastly experienced referee, he

missed that one? It cost them three points. If they had have been an

understanding of the rules, an injured player coming back into the

game, the referee should have had an awareness of that. But in the

heat of battle, he has missed that, but one of the Church - Madrid

touch judges should have been able to help him. That is quite a costly

three points. You were both massively impressed with Mick

Williams. The scrum dominance, he picks up, he has the strength and

ability. Young Iain Henderson here, tackled, released, get back on his

feet and is able to make the ball available quickly. That is the key.

When you are 20 stone on the hoof, going forward, he is going through

four dies! He is virtually unstoppable. Just pure explosive

power. That is why he has been picked, to take four or five

players out and release the rest of the backs. I think young Henderson

is benefiting from the fact he is playing with him. No worries over

the try there? I think the second angle was fairly definitive.

Williams, and he is a block of the man. It would take it to be human

effort from there to stop him. refer back to 10 minutes ago,

probably the best first-half performance, it justifies this

rotational policy that applicants can has introduced. I think it is

working. Paddy is looking very, very sharp, but also looks very,

very keen. Everybody who does come- on or is getting his first game

this evening, we are seeing the offloading here... This is

Henderson. Surrey, Williams. But it is the intent we are playing with.

We now have a back line... Non just a back line, I think his rotation

policy is keeping the squad very competitive. With Paddy coming off

the bench, getting into playing competitive rugby again. But we are

not missing Johann Muller as we thought we might have been doing,

because the people who have come in have stepped up to the mark.

great piece of play. Ulster have dominance in the scrum. He goes

high, and put him to ground. He takes a second to re establish

where the ball is, and subsequently Ulster win the ball from the

turnover. That is exceptional maturity for made 20-year-old. He

had a great World Cup and is coming back on the back of that. People

may have said before he should have been involved in the Irish squad,

but is the sort of boy you want to start bringing through for the next

World Cup, to get the opportunity of going and training with the

Irish squad. If he did spitting in performances like that he may get a

green shirt. -- keeps putting in performances like that. He is

learning from the best, and it showed in terms of how he is

performing this evening. Let's take Cardiff, having to cope in the

second half without their points scorer, Toby. -- Jason Tovey.

It is one of those, the hit and spin, he has been caught, and I

grimace to see that. It is a season-long injury. But it is part

and parcel of the game. You don't like to see it happen, but you can

tell immediately, he is in pain and it probably will end his season.

you're doing? Absolutely. I think if we can establish field position,

play with a ball of the right part of the pitch, but let's keep the

keep the ball on the ground, that as something we have been good at.

He is also very experienced, and he will be guiding them through the

next 40 minutes. Appreciate your observations, Ulster are back out

Haven't seen too much of Tommy Bowe, but as the season unfolds, no doubt

we will see a lot more of the man. Paddy Jackson, two conversions and

a penalty last week. A lot of hard words in the home dressing room, I

Durban, leads the Blues back out onto the park. No changes from the

15 that left the field. Jamie Roberts, a little bit of

speculation about where he is going to play his rugby, he is out of

contract here at the end of the season. He will be looking for

another lie in store, I am sure, and afterwards, who knows. --

dominated that scrum, their defensive lines be, their appetite

for work and defence. Cardiff have to come up with a solution at scrum

time otherwise they will not win ball in hand, or playing in his
