Euro 2017 Qualifier: England v Belgium Women's Football

Goes for gold, after the bar. Great volley, Aluko. A goal.

This England team certainly get around the globe. Last summer, it

was Canada, Ottawa, Edmonton and Vancouver. Last summer it was the

deep South in the US, Tennessee. Now we are in Rotherham.

England have arrived in South Yorkshire for the third Euro 2017

qualifiers. The aim is to reach the finals in the Netherlands next

number. They have won both matches so far, in Estonia, and are home to

Bosnia, by a single goal. Their opponents tonight are Belgium,

unbeaten so far, neighbours of the hosts. With me are two former

England players. One specialised in scoring goals, Kelly Smith got 46

for the National side. Rachel Brown-Phillips was goalkeeper faded

to matches. How tough it is -- is a game to be? Belgium are good

counterattacking side, they're organised and will raise their

level. If England can be creative, get the ball down, I expect a

comfortable win. We saw Bosnia put ten across the back last time, what

can we expect from Belgian? Different approach from Belgium.

They have nothing to lose. They need to go out there and win the game.

They will be looking to counterattack, cause problems for

England. They won't thank up with ten players, they will be organised.

Out of possession, they will get players back behind the ball, they

will be hard to break down. They will leave themselves options to

create England problems up front. This is a chance for England to go

top of the group tonight? Definitely, they have the players,

Mark Sampson has put Jill Scott up front, normally midfield,

interesting to see how she does. It will be difficult, they may bank up

a little bit. I expect more of an attacking threat than Bosnia. Bosnia

put 11 players behind the ball, Belgium need to put players up

front. They have some good players. Tessa Wullaert place for Wolfsburg.

Taylor, a bit of a handball. That seems to bounce up and hit on the

arm. Toni Duggan is in hair, big chance come and gone. Shoots,

scores. England are behind. Our road into the top corner. It is an

do get the equaliser. Bardsley beaten by a big deflection, Germany

The way for a victory against the French goes on, but England's first

point. Two defeats, one draw against the well's top three, USA, Germany

and France. How would you rate England's performances? Performances

were generally good. What England will take and learn from the She

Believes Cup, is the difference from being good and very good. Very fine

margins, Germany, the US scoring their chances. Good opportunity to

play those teams, glad it will be repeated in the next three years to

come. Winning games is a good habit to get into? Disappointing they did

not pick up a win. They happily take heart from the performances they put

in. Very small margins, losing by one goal on two occasions. They can

take great pride from that, now it is about putting a performance in

today, picking up three points. These are teams they can beat.

England have beaten Germany? They are expected to be Germany. Could

not have been a better running ahead of these qualifying matches, to play

Germany, USA and France will stop let's hear from the England manager.

This is the third qualifier of the campaign, talk me through the

starting XI. Only one change from the French game. Please with our

performance against France. Again we deserved to win. All the players who

Jill Scott? Let's talk about how you think? You play against teams he

parked the bus. Against Bosnia, when we played them, they did that. Now

we are performing well, like the World Cup, a lot of teams will do

that. An example of that is when I came on, managing to head one in,

off my nose. They all count. How frustrating is it, playing against

teams like that? Really frustrating. A lot of people think it should be

six, 7-0. When teams bank up, you have to break them down. They kept

going. You are the secret weapon, not so secret, we cannot hide you.

Something you work on in training? Not really. I should get more goals

with my head, for my height. We spoke about it when I was younger,

when you at all, they say get in the box. You don't get coached on

heading the ball. Me being a secret weapon, in terms of I can attract

the taller players to mark me, the smaller players can edit in. In

Canada there was a Lucy Bronze free kick, you have your own set piece

named after you? Not important enough to have that, giving away our

secret! Maybe I will make it up myself. I will create one. Looking

back to the She Believes Cup, how did it go? Disappointing we did not

win, two defeats in the draw, but how -- our performance, we competed

with the best teams in the world, but did not take our chances.

Something you have been working on? Under Mark, we have been tough to

beat. Defensive record is good. We need to add more goals, against the

top teams you will not create that many chances. Germany and America

did not create many against us, that they were clinical and finish them.

That is the next part for us as a group. Tough to beat, but we have to

be more clinical in front of goal. Jill Scott in that advanced role.

What do you make of that? They use the same formation against France

and Germany. Interesting to see how it goes against Belgium. She brings

the option to play the ball in behind the backline, she is an

aerial presence. Hopefully Toni Duggan can work off her. Two girls

in her last -- two goals in their last five games, is that a concern?

Jill Scott is the key in this game, stretching the backline, she will

make the runs that will make the Belgian defence dropped, and

hopefully Toni Duggan in the box, and Jordan can get in the box.

Having seen the impact of the World Cup and women's game, they will be

determined to make the most of the opportunity. The European

Championships just around the corner. What should their approach

the? Get the ball down, comfortable in possession. Get Jordan Hobbs on

the ball as much as possible. Toni Duggan so good in the hole,

dribbling at the backline, be comfortable in possession, keep the

ball, be chemical in the final third. They lacked patients in the

Bosnia game, hopefully they can learn from that experience, play the

ball around, comfortable, take their chances. The Belgian team aiming to

reach their first major tournament. They have the extra incentive of it

taking place in a neighbouring country. They are also representing

a nation reeling from last month's terrorist attacks in Brussels. Hello

was a sad thing, to be a human being at that time. I think we can play

tribute by winning the game. Against Bosnia it was good. We had good

results. Bad against Serbia, 1-1. We could have won that game we played

it ten times. We are well prepared, I think we can get something. We

know this game will be a big game. We will be ready for it. We will

give it our all see what the result will be. I know there are some

players in England who played for Chelsea, Wolfsburg played against

Chelsea, they had a good attack, we have a good defence, we will see

what it brings. It would be great to qualify, it will be the first time,

Holland is just around the corner, good for the fans. First

qualification ever for us. We don't think about that right now, just

telling game per game. Doing as good as possible. I think we have a good

chance to qualify. Close to Belgian, perfect for family and friends. All

the fans to come and see us. Where are the threats from Belgium

tonight? We saw them in the VC. Tessa Wullaert, one of the top

England believe this will be their most competitive game in qualifying

for two years. The England team breezed through World Cup

qualifying, five from five. Bosnia showed that this campaign will be a

these are opponents they should be beating. Belgium are a team high on

confidence. They are a country getting better, they are beating

We were talking about the line-up and the formation, we thought that

Demi Stokes would stay out wide and Fara Williams would get into

Horror moment for England. They have come straight back and forced a

last summer and it seems a long time ago now. For the Manchester City

One of the longest runs in football in the men or women's game comes to

an end. The next ten minutes are absolutely crucial.

professionals we were talking about. 13th goal for her country, four in

four in the Algarve Cup to top score in that. Jill Scott has been

England's best player so far. Has scored in both of England's games so

they like to play the short intricate passes and Belgium are not

a loving England to do that, and when they go forward, they go

game goes on she is going to keep getting more and more confident, you

can see the first two when she came to collect the ball, she has flapped

a little bit, but since then she has looked a little bit more commanding

and confident, that is the best word for her. The women's FA Cup final,

Saturday 14th May. Chelsea against Man City, Arsenal against Sunderland

other semifinal. Could England's preparations have been hampered by

the Arsenal against Notts County game that went to penalties, a few

of the squad where involved in that. They would have had to had a rest

day before they could get going. They had a rest day, so it would

have been the pull and the ice Batth and a low tempo session.

They do pass the ball well. Good challenge by Alex Scott. Better from

England. Good final ball. How was your fitness with Doncaster? Still

got a bit of a dodgy knee! Do not mention the age! You missed the

opening game. 4-1 against you! It was. How did you play? If you did,

it would have been seven! I was waiting for that.

Experienced legs! Plenty more in them.

Stony started the season with Arsenal, played her 50th game for

the club. That feel England are forcing their

passes and at very straight lines. You have to break the lines Open. We

were seeing Alex Scott and Greenwood are trying to give width, it is very

compact and very difficult to pass because it is very crowded in there.

Seven players back constantly in defence in the central area. No need

to go wide. The two -- Coutereels is coming back to deny them the width,

very experienced player, 50 caps. Stoney thought it should have been a

foul. The captain has stayed down. Coutereels Standard Liege will take

Because you have two forward players, Duggan and Scott comedy

like to play long, England are forcing the ball into the channels

and it wasn't easily cleared and just like there, maybe play through

the middle as well, can we play through the middle or go out wide?

This would be one of the greatest ever victories should they hold onto

Zeler, has 76 game for Belgium. Twice she has finished top scorer in

the Belgian league. She might well keep this in. The assistant slipped.

about England rather sums up their performance or far. Yes, great play

from De Caigny to keep the ball in. Been very impressed with Belgium's

athleticism and the ball they keep it and start attacking. England a

it into context, in terms of league football, and elect played Eintracht

Definitely. They really are and they will be difficult to beat, they have

been around for a long time now and it shows when you can constantly

play in the Champions League. You're going to become and better. Steph

win against Germany, her penalty, they will be completely razed if it

quality of the pass in those positions just lacking. Wouldn't

mind Fara Williams and Jordan Nobbs swapping position. I think Fara

Williams is wasted out why. Although she is coming in field, I would like

to see her coming into deep positions, she can spray the ball

out wide. Whether that would happen in the second half, I don't know. I

am the standing tension, she can score goals in the supporting role,

but does not suited. More involved in the central role. Nine and a half

minutes to go in what has been a very drab and disappointing England

Williams, a little bit over to the left-hand side, obviously she has

scored goals like that before. Quite an easy claim. In the end, for the

goalkeeper. She started as a bit shaky, Justien

Odeurs, but done very well since Belgium taken the lead. Two minutes

until the half-time whistle, cannot think of much stoppage time. The

referee might add 30 seconds on for the goal. Williams during the fowl.

There she is in the central role, getting more involved. She can

create in there. Always wanting to get on the ball. Apco stepped out of

Better free kick from Alex Greenwood. Swinging it in with the

Very unusual position for England to be in at half-time. Kelly, your

thoughts? Where do you start? It is too slow and no urgency, they need

to move the ball quicker, more dynamic movement off-the-ball in the

final third. Claymore passes. We are making sloppy errors under no

pressure. Not good right now. Did not expect to be in this position at

half-time. Very alien for England to be losing at half-time. Very much

odds-on to win the game. It has not been all about England and their

demise. Belgium cantering from a lackey opportunistic error from

England. Really about the lack of urgency. Sometimes these free rolls,

people moving into different roles. Almost causing a bit of confusion,

not somebody stretching the play, to give options out why. I know it is

painful, let's look at the goal. What happened? Just a ball over the

top. Did not deal with it as she should. Not commanding. Should be

clearing the ball right away. Just hesitant. Credit to the Belgian

forward. She gambles. Getting their just reward, easy pass into the net.

Absolute nightmare for Karen Bardsley. She has waited and waited,

the ball bouncing two times. She is standing still, taking a swipe. She

has to be on the move, committing a lot earlier than she did.

Uncharacteristically Karen Bardsley, England are one down because of it.

Serious error, but what options do she have? Demo numerous ones. Not

about options, side-splitting it to her right or left. She could have

done a Cruyff turn, and keep me ups. It is about commanding your area. It

is a speculative three ball from the centre bar. She needs to come out

and just put her foot through it. About making contact with the ball,

clearing the lines. Taking the decisions away from the centre

halves. Not theirs to make. Sometimes it is difficult for

goalkeepers, when you are not involved, like she has been, being a

spectator. You need her to step up, command the area. She was too

hesitant. Games like this require that mentality. You know you are not

going to be in the game, pulling off save after save. You need to

concentrate and be there when required. The Belgian goalkeeper not

been that impressive? Not technically perfect, but she has

done what is required. Making decisions, coming for them. Not

powering through the ball from a standing jump, technically not

perfect. Here she comes, punching, getting something on the ball. Not

technically perfect, keeping the ball out of the net. She has helped

her defenders. Not stepping back, willing to get in the middle of it

all. Free kick from Fara Williams, again certainly a goalkeeper

international standard expected to make that say. She takes the sting

out of the game for Belgium. Goalkeeping under the microscope

tonight. What can you tell us about the state of goalkeeping in women's

game, from your perspective? Disappointing that tonight has been

highlighted as negatively for goalkeepers. In the last couple of

years, certainly the World Cup, many examples of female goalkeepers

continuing to progress. The standard improving. We did not talk about for

goalkeeping during the World Cup. The standard has come on since I

retired! Tonight is a blip. You are not used to seeing these errors by

Karen Bardsley. World-class goalkeeper. Great shot stopper.

They're kicking let her down when a team needed her. Not the norm from

her. It almost gave the game a bit of a spark. All in and for the first

ten, 15 minutes. Belgium not getting into that. That put England on the

back foot, they need a plan B. Mark will be talking to them. I'm sure he

will be. The domestic Super League started last month. Plenty of

headlines in the early stages of the season. It is best England against

the club she has only just left. Aluko, the champions beginning their

defence of the title, with three points. Using her pace. Successful,

lovely goal. It is the new girl, up and running in the WSL. They have

had to be patient, the goal arriving for the home side. Toni Duggan, what

Exciting, difficult to tell who will top the table at the end of the

summer. Very competitive right from the start. We'll Chelsea retain the

title? Arsenal? Manchester City? Any team can beat anybody on their day,

fantastic for the league. Extra team being added, fantastic for the

league. A break for the international fixtures? In some

respects, frustrating for players not involved in the international

fixtures and fans. Something the FA are dressing, the momentum that

needs to be gathered, looking ahead to next season, something that will

change. It is an exciting season, for players coming up through the

ranks domestically, and international players coming to the

WSL. I know it is early. Any favourites? I know you will say

Arsenal? Course I like Arsenal. The style they are playing. I will go

with Manchester City. You can follow all the best women's football action

mighty bring on? I think maybe Karen Carney coming on, she adds face and

flair, picking out a key pass. Gemma on the bench she can unlock any

defence on her day. Maybe looking to those two. He has plenty of options.

Thanks. What do you think England's approach should be in the second

half? Certainly look to use the width more. Karen Carney, Gemma

Davison might add some more unknown to the game, which is what England

need, unpredictability. A bit more flair, confidence, take someone on,

pick out a pass. Karen Carney can do that, Gemma Davison. Fallujah, her

pace is frightening. -- Aluko. England's best chances coming from

set pieces? That is not what they wanted before the game. The likes of

Toni Duggan looking creative. Little cutback. Foiling the defender. Not

the quality she will expect. Alex Greenwood always provides real good

quality, Jill Scott will be disappointed. Great positioning,

does not get under the ball. Not the best header. She is known for her

aerial ability. Looking for more effective in clinical play in the

final third, is what we want. Also patients, you still have 45 minutes.

A long time to play, get the ball down, keep it moving, dynamic

movement on the ball. What kind of character can you expect from Karen

Bardsley? That goal will be forgotten about. Those sort of

errors, if you carry on thinking about them, not concentrating on the

game. One in a million. Karen Bardsley would never do that again.

Top-class goalkeeper. Forget about that, England move forwards. Mark

Sampson said this would be England's Tapas home qualifier, it has turned

out to be. Would not expect to be a goal down, but the first five

minutes will be key, they need to be an affront foot, attacking the pace,

confidence and flair. Mentally, England's record, not conceding at

home in a European qualifier since 2014, it will be tough? Not

something we expect to go into, 1-0 down at half-time. I have full 100%

belief come the end of the game England will be the victors. It is

about character now. Not used to being a goal down, who will step up

and take control? Fara Williams, Katie Chapman putting their stamp on

the game. Scotland 2-1 Slovenia, keeping you up-to-date with the

We have heard what the studio have said. This Karen Bardsley is a

strong character, but it was a ghastly moment. So unfortunate as a

goalkeeper, one mistake, that happens. Everything else she has

done very well. Strong character mentally, she will forget about it

and move on. In the second half she will be fine. We will have to

can stay wide, take players on, get crosses into the box, make things

happen. What England need at the moment, nobody taking the game by

contact. Really intelligent run and as soon as the ball comes in, what a

great left foot, it takes a little bit of a deflection, she just

couldn't get anything on it, clever run to go to the near post. Better,

committing those players, getting them into the box. Aluko has made a

Coutereels in the left midfield role has played so well. Needed how they

are because Zeler has been superb. Carney did well. Here is Fara

I don't think she has had a great night, to be honest. Been a fairly

easy game to referee. The communication has not been very

pick yourself up against Bosnia on Tuesday? We have a great group of

players, we have not lost. We have a point. We have good strength, we

always win together and lose together. I'm sure the girls will be

heading into the next game fine. Fitting that Jill Scott got the

What are the thoughts of the team about the performance? Disappointing

performance. We were confident we would win it. We knew Belgium would

be a tough team to break down, some good results recently. We made the

best out of the game. Fortunately Jill got the goal. Last ten minutes

we pushed for the second, not to be. Why did England struggle so much for

large periods of the game this evening? Belgium did well to congest

the pitch, not enough space, not space in behind for the forwards. A

lot of congested play. They frustrated us. Not as precise as we

have been in the past. They got the goal, grew in confidence. We will

take something from the game, figure out how to break teams down, that is

what a lot of teams will do against us, two banks of four, we will have

to break that down and get wins. She added a lot of energy from the

bench? The pace in behind, she is so fast, hard to defend against. When

she gets on the turn. Just overtaking the player. So quick over

small amounts of grass. In the break, Alex Scott with the overlap.
