snooker Championship. Our feature match now feature Kyren Wilson

versus David Grace. Kyren Wilson breaks off. World

number 14. Grace had to come through three

tough qualifying matches. World rank number 51.

Making his debut here at The Crucible Theatre. Big smile on his

face, before he was introduced. He was nervous, also the anticipation

of getting out there on the floor and hitting his first ball. The

excitement was there. I remember it so well, when you play here for the

first time. It's like the theatre of dreams, as we always call. It

David is a lovely fellow. He's shed a lot of weight over the

last couple of years. Five stone. Amazing.

Got married last year, everything's going well in his life. Kyren Wilson

is playing against -- has played against David Grace on two occasions

and David Grace has won them both. That's unlucky. Took the positive

aggressive shot to go into the pack and try to split the reds. That's

unlucky. There's his first pot. He's judge

today nicely. -- judged it nicely.

We'll get a better view now. Doesn't look like, certainly the red below

them will pot. The reds are spread nicely. Black is

out of play. There's a gap in between the cluster

of reds. He will have to get onto the pink

sooner or later to have any chance of winning the frame at this visit.

I just put a line there. Will he play that red and cannon into the

red to the left of the black here. He's played the cannon nicely. Is

the black pottable? If the red below the black on the

top cushion wasn't there, this would be more straightforward.

He may have to take the red into the left centre.

I'm looking, I don't think the pink spot is available.

It is covered. When he goes on there, in a couple of shots, it will

be available. I always love watching the new

players coming to The Crucible for the first time and seeing their

excitement and just thinking like, get off to a good start and things

like that. It's so important to calm the

nerves. There's such a build up to your first match here. Something you

would have watched on TV over the years and dreamt of playing here.

The first time I was here I played Steve Davis. It was 1991. I was sat

in my chair, Steve Davis beside me. I'm looking at my name on the

scoreboard next to Steve Davis, who I'd watched all these years. It took

me four frames to settle down into the match. I was 4-0 down before I

knew where I was. Got the path of the cue ball right

but didn't hit it hard enough. Quite close to the black which makes

it tougher. It's harder to see the Aprilingle.

-- angle. At least he got a foot hold in this

opening frame. You remember your first time here? Yes, I do. Similar

to you. I played Graham Miles, ended up losing the match, I think 10-6,

10-7. I felt like a fish out of water. Of all the venues, in all the

world, never felt like there was any other venue apart from here. Yeah,

fantastic. This year is the 40th anniversary. A

lovely programme last night with all the past champions and all the 32

players that are contesting this year's Betfred world snooker

Championship, it was a lovely evening. Fantastic. We were

chatting. I think Denis and myself, the only ones at every one, other

playing or working. Good pot. Excellent pot. If he drops

the brown in, he's bound to be on the red near the three reds on the

pink spot area. I'm not saying that's the wrong

shot, but if he lets Kyron in, he may live to regret playing that

shot. That's a possible escape, to try and

nestle on that red. It's not that hard to hit a red

here. It's not hitting the red but keeping

it safe at the same time. He's gone for the one behind the

black. Just short. Good effort, though. The only problem about this

red, in trying to hit this red, there is enough room - Around the

back. Having seen the path the cue ball took, I don't think the shot's

on. Just saying to the referee that the

blue was up a bit further. This is the important ball. This has

to be put back in exactly the right place.

It would have been easier if it was stayed where it had been put. It's

been moved now. Formally, I would be saying if I'm

playing the right shot to my opponent, I'll let you play that

shot. It's so important with that blue, if he's going to play the same

shot. The harder he plays this, the wider

it will come off. That's a better angle. Well done.

Oh, it's not landed. Touching ball. It certainly has landed.

Just checking to see if it is actually touching. Have a look at

this. On this superfine cloth it's

virtually impossible to play the roll up to a baulk colour, 99 times

out of 100, there's a gap. That surprised me that ended up touching

ball. The red above the pink will pot into

the left middle. After he pots this red and black, the red in the bunch

of three will pot into left centre as well. It will also pot into the

bottom right hand corner pocket. Tried toe maybe get on a -- tried to

maybe get on a baulk colour after potting this red.

Good pot. It's important if he can, getting on the next red, he's got a

nice angle to bring the other two reds into play.

Nice angle on the black. One good cannon here bring these two reds

into play. It could be a great chance to steal this frame.

That's OK. Could have been a little bit better.

Excellent pot. If he drops this black in dead weight, he won't

finish perfect on the next red. Played the cannon on the red to slow

the cue ball down. He's played that beautifully.

If he gets nicely on the brown in four shots' time, the anning toll

get onto the blue is no problem. Didn't see that one coming. That was

a deceleration on the backswing there. Just trying to miss the

brown. He's done just about as good as he

could have done from there. What a result that is. It was always

dangerous playing the brown into the area of the blue, pink and black. He

decided he felt he could get away with it.

This is not an easy safety shot. Usually a fluke is a good thing.

I'm not sure it's done him any favours there.

This is really tough. I can't see a safety shot here, can you? Certainly

is very tough. The black is in the way. Unless he can try and miss the

black and leave it up in the baulk area somewhere.

It needs to go though. It needs to travel otherwise he's left it.

It was one of those occasions where the fluke didn't do him any favours.

If he just had to pot the blue, you would say no problem. He's got to

negotiate the position for the pink. This looks very, very good. Oh, what

a shot this is. Excellent shot, well played. He couldn't have hit that

much better. If ever you could say the positional shot was played to

the inch, that was exactly it. Excellent.

After a fabulous blue, this straightforward black for the

opening frame. In it goes. Excellent clearance from blue to black. Kyren

Wilson wins the first frame. Got to be careful here not to push a

red over to the corner. Needs a full ball kiss and he can.

If he felt that was a certain plant, perhaps would have been better just

rolling it in for playing for the blue or something like that.

Once again doesn't fancy the pots in the middle pockets.

There's the plant. Had to make it. Possibly should have taken the brown

on to the left centre. I was going to say this is a

straightforward escape. But he's hit the black. It doesn't really do any

damage. He could have taken the brown into

the left centre, couple of reds... I think when you're snoockering

players now, they're that good, OK might give seven points and then

give another four points away. 11 or 15 points whatever he gives away

here, it means nothing with 15 reds on the table. Sometimes you've got

to make things happen. It was always an easy hit, never

really going to gain any advantage. That brown should have been taken on

into the left centre. Same old problem when you're playing

off the edge of the pack. Got to be careful you don't push one over the

corner. Has he found another plant? Now

then, is he going to play the brown? No, the brown is a bit tough.

Didn't see this plant coming. It's flicked off two reds.

He has taken a risk there and he felt he could run through either on

the white or the cushion which meant this red wouldn't have been taken on

but the fact he hasn't, he could just drop this red and get on the

black. Or is there one available in the middle somewhere? He is looking

to play on the cue ball that side of the black, there must be something

about in the middle. Excellent pot. Well done. We keep

going back to the fact that a common shot, playing reds from the middle

of the table. There is no difference to what we've talked about before.

You practice so much potting balls from this end and not so much from

that end. That was a much tougher pot as well. He potted that black

and stand two reds just above the black.

The pink may be open to the right centre, it looks like it is from

that camera angle. In opportunity again from David Grace. He will make

the most of his opportunities in the first couple of frames. He needs a

frame and a break dust to settle him down a bit.

Chances in the opening two frames where he could perhaps have won them

both. This is the ideal opportunity to win the frame and maybe calm the

nerves a bit. How on earth did he miss that? It

just shows you, you can miss anything in this game.

The only thing I can think of is he put a bit of right-hand side to push

the white up the table and pushed straight in front of it. It's

surprising. APPLAUSE

Nothing gives your opponent more confident than missing blacks off

the spot. Kyren Wilson will always fancy winning the frame at this

visit, knowing no David Grace is under it.

It's such a strange game. I had every chance of being 2-1 and now

possibly David Grace could have led 3-1. And then you are trailing 3-0.

It has been his own misses that are causing the problems. When you keep

missing easy balls, it's so hard to get it out of your mind.

Very, very important. To get a nice angle onto the pink to try to get in

behind those two reds both available to the right-hand middle. He just is

looking at the angle. Just looking to where he needs to finish so he

can screw pass the two reds. That's where you will eventually want to

finish. Pot this red, go high across the pink.

Played it nicely. A little bit off the cushion would have been better

but he is still OK, he's dropped the red in.

Nine points ahead so he's going to need that tricky red just along the

top cushion. He is already having a look at the

angle. After potting this red. His next colour.

The players commentating on the first match today with Maguire and

there wasn't one ball played along the top cushion the whole match. It

will be interesting to see how well the pockets are playing this week,

or this tournament. He would be planning to go on the red now. -- he

won't be planning to go onto the red now. Can he pot the black? Cannoned

on that red? Just put a line up there, if he pot this black, he

might be to clip the red. But he is looking at playing a snooker. The

angle is not there. It is fine if he pops the red and

colour, means he might not need the brown but if David Grace does, he

will need it. He was bound to get the snooker there whatever the

equation. This looks too wide. Anything but

that. Anything but that, my friend. It's all about fractions, isn't it?

Luckily, he's finished dead straight, hence he is having that

put back in. Decided the two cushion escape is

not working but I think it's still a better shot than playing this one

cushion. I don't see the point of this shot all. This could be

freeborn land. He has hit the red, well done. Needs

that red to pass the middle. I think it cuts.

Maybe he thinks it's a little bit thin. He is 24 points in front,

neither brown is safe, he is OK. He cued that well. That's a little

lucky to have kissed the blue. He hit this good. It was close. A bit

unfortunate the red came down. It does cut into this right centre.

Have to be careful of the cue ball. Maybe running it into the blue.

He quickly glanced after he played that snooker to see this angle is

cut off and as you can see it is not cut off. Will this be a free ball?

Doesn't make a lot of difference. So important to get it in the right

place because it's easier if there is more room to play the shot. What

happened there? He is playing one cushion and nearly hit it off two

cushions. That was a poor shot. He has left a free ball. I'm sure David

Grace will take the blue. He's got a nice angle. Cue ball are between the

pink and black quarter yellow. -- towards the yellow.

He could force it in and come up the right side of the black but this is

nice. Get a nice angle on the green and he can drop behind the brown.

Just checking where he wants the cue ball but he doesn't want to finish

anywhere but straight. Try to get it somewhere near that

circle. That's OK. Not as close to the green but he still has a nice

angle. Doesn't have to bring the brown interplay. -- into play.

That's not as good as he would have liked.

This is a little tricky. If he does happen to pot the remaining four

colours to pinch the frame, he will forget about what happened in the

first two frames. But if he loses this frame, he will be remembering

them all. This is a massive shot. If he pops it, he is bound to be on

the blue. Nicely on the blue. Four behind.

Blue, pink and black required. Pink will leave him seven ahead with

seven remaining so he needs the black and he has played that nicely

indeed. Judged the pace of the cue ball perfectly.

We have had a black ball finish in the first round and we will have

another one in this frame. This will settle the nerves for David Grace.

Black to get his first frame at the Crucible on the board. He will be

mightily relieved and delighted to pinch that frame. Excellent

clearance from David Grace. Kyren Wilson still leading.

David Grace tried to close the arrears here. He's got to have some

good opportunities in those first four friends, he just didn't convert

them. I must say, the tables so far look

to be playing really nice. I think the atmosphere in the room is very

good as well. We have only seen one kick, I did the opening session with

Maguire and Magill and they didn't see a kick in that match. There was

one kick. . The tables as you would expect for the World Championships.

Playing excellent and very quick as well. Particularly on the first day

as well. You would expect them to play well. A bit of wear and tear

after a few days. Hopefully they don't start bouncing. Not quite sure

what the policy is this year. After every three or four weeks days, the

tables were recovered, cushions and cover we cushioned. I don't know

what the policy is for this year. Looking like taking... This is the

first time I've seen a ball play on the top cushion. In the match this

morning and this one today. This is probably the reason they are not

playing the Next -- the reason they are not playing them.

I'm pretty sure the pink pockets in the right-hand corner, if it does,

it needs to be straight on this red. Then he can put it in the hole and

in the opposite corner. The pink is clearly available so it's a kiss of

getting into this cue ball. -- it's a kiss of getting... Well done.

Tying the pink app as well as the black being out of commission so

essential to get the top side of the blue. Can't afford to be low. He has

to get the pink of the next shot. He has not got there.

He could have afforded to be another few inches further up the table.

Just a fraction of an angle. But can't get into the bunch. Has he

found a loose red Brad Potts? -- that pots?

That's the one he is playing for. Can you bring the black into play?

This could turn out to be OK. The poor shot he played from red to

bloom could turn out to be great. He wants to play this quite firm

because he wants to bring the red away from the black and push the

black towards the corner at the same time. He doesn't want the red to be

in the way. The one he is playing the cannon into. That's OK.

He now has a nice angle on the back, you can push into the two reds and

bring them into play. A little cannon on the red just above the

black. That might be OK for this red, just about on it. Didn't have

to hit it as hard as he did. Just a gentle little cannon.

He has got a nice angle, if he wishes, to bring it into the corner

pocket. Nice angle on the green here into the corner pocket of one

cushion and just try to cannon into the pink or just below it into the

centre of the reds. See how this works out. A bit of luck and he's

got it, that's perfect, excellent shot. For a minute, I thought the

white was going straight to the cushion but he just got that second

kiss. We will show you that second shot we were talking about. As the

white hits the pack, it looks to be perfect. Then that little kiss

happened. Just a little bit of luck that you need now and again to keep

the break going. Got himself into a nice position to

win the frame. David Grace is a great all-round

match player. Not a proven break-builder. Only had about seven

centuries this season. But an excellent chance to win the frame.

139 was his break in the last tournament, 2011. Amazing for such a

classy player as David, he hasn't scored a few more centuries. The

only problem to hold the cue ball, he could play the cannon into the

pink but that may put the black safe so I would definitely be trying to

avoid cannon earning into the pink. He has done that nicely. If it

misses the kiss, it's perfect, if it doesn't, it may not be. But it has

so he's OK. Nicely judged. Stay on the black now. Just another couple

of red and my value colours will be a nice frame-winner for him.

Put that black into the centre of the pocket and because of it, he is

slightly out of position. A couple of inches higher with the cue ball.

Makes this red more straightforward. That's OK. He will still need one

more red. In fact, he will take yellow or brown here. It's a good

position. He has taken these quite well up to

now. Played it well. It's been a nice

break. Excellent, absolutely excellent. On reflection, should he

go on to win this frame Nike looks likely well, I think 3-2 is a fair

score line. Wilson pinch deck above the opening frames but he has

certainly been the better of the two players but David Grace with an

excellent break so far. Can he make a century? He deserves one know. --

he deserves one now. What a shame, no century but that

break of 75 enough to get David Grace and he closes 3-2.

He will not be happy with that. The fact he misses the blue but also the

fact that he left the red. Bit surprised he E didn't play it

with a bit more pace. There's another couple of reds.

It was the fact that he definite get close enough to those -- didn't get

close enough to those reds. He's left a good chance now for David

Grace. Just played that a little bit

tentatively. Surprised he didn't take the easier

red of the two there. He did risk a bit there.

That was a straightforward pot for somebody of David's class.

Probably got a little bit excited to see Kyren miss that last chance.

It appears to have been fortunate not to have left anything on.

He's started to miss one or two now. The opening four frames I think he

only missed one, what we could call an easy pot. He's already miss twoed

in this -- missed two in this frame so far that you would have expected

him to have potted. Doesn't have the desired angle on

this red to be able to hold for the black. He'll be disappointed there.

Got it moving. Another good shot from yellow to red.

That was all about the cannon there. If he kissed it full ball it's

perfect. The fact that it's kissed it half ball, the cue ball's just

run away. Would you play the black or play

safe? If he can play the black where the cue ball is going to be

cushioned by hitting the red or pink on the last e left-hand side of the

table, it's worth taking on. Oh, I see, he loses the white, doesn't he.

Yeah, without the kiss. It was an excellent opportunity.

Just didn't judge that cannon earlier, as you said. Would have

been better off playing the yellow. He could have got through to the

yellow. If this red goes in, in the a good safety shot there from David.

That was an excellent pot. And the control as well to hold for the

black. Has he covered himself? I think he

has. He could have pulled the cue ball

away from the black spot. But that's a very bad error of judgment there.

This is not straightforward to get back into baulk.

Hit that pretty well. Used that red to not come into open play and it

hasn't. There may be a shot to nothing on here.

Just one of those two reds, to the left of the black, are in a line

towards the left hand corner pocket. Can he make them into a plant here?

Looks like he's going to play it. There's distance between the two

reds. It's not a gimme. He can certainly make it.

Just about. Certainly wiped its feet, the red. Because he didn't hit

it the way he wanted, he didn't get into the cue ball enough to get a

nice angle on the pirving. Pink. -- pink.

Will he take this red on down the right-hand side?

He has the cue power to screw the red in and back up the baulk if he

wishes. Foul. A great pot. You can't hit the

ball better than that. It never touched the sides. Obviously, a

little bit more screw needed. But unlucky to go in off that shot.

I'm amazed he's putting him back into bat. It's going to be quite

easy for Kyren to get the cue ball tight on the baulk cushion.

Don't see the point of him putting him back into bat there. All he did

was ask for trouble. Can he get that gap between the red

and black to get back up for maybe even the pink. He's played it a bit

hard for the pink. That's no good. I thought he would have played that

slower for the pink in the same pocket. He's seeing if he's on the

green. Not the desired safety shot. David's

got a straightforward shot here. That's a poor shot, David. Goodness

me, my friend. Shake of the head tells you that he played that all

wrong. The object of that shot is to make

sure the object ball is safe first. Then worry about the cue ball.

Through that loose safety shot he's been afforded an opportunity now.

Strange having looked dominant in the opening four frames, every time

he got in he scored, he's suddenly gone off the boil.

Well played, good kiss. Played the cannon like that to bring all four

balls into play. At this end of the table, could score heavy enough to

win the frame. It's like Kyren Wilson has lost a

bit of focus during the mid-session interval. Maybe he felt that playing

well enough to draw away in this session. Obviously he hasn't done

that so far. He doesn't want to be straight on

this blue. He's not happy with the angle he's

got on the blue. Played a pretty good red into the

right centre. Lost the cue ball a little bit

there. He can pot this red and play a little nudge on the red just above

it and stay on the pink. He needs to judge his cue action.

That middle pocket was always there. He took the wrong red there. I

thought he would have gone for the lower red and played the cannon on

that red. He could have rolled it in dead weight. But felt it was a shot

he was a little bit twitchy on. He decided to play the harder shot. But

he felt he could play it to the pace where it took the pressure off the

shot. This is a topsy turvy frame. Hello.

It's all happening at the minute. David should be glued in behind the

brown here. He's decided to roll up behind the green, has he reached?

Foul. He didn't reach? Wow. I thought he

must have reached. Goodness me. Why wouldn't you have played the green

to roll in behind the brown there. It makes no difference whether

you're tight between the green or the brown. Going behind the brown

you can't do anything wrong. And you could play it more

positively, a bit harder. David, for some reason, appears to

not want to play anything too difficult when he's playing a pot.

He played the correct shot, but unfortunately hit it badly.

That was really tough. Well done, good pot.

He's not even looking at the pink here.

Find it hard to refuse the pink than play a safety shot for the red.

If he can get the cue ball somewhere there, behind the yellow,

OK that's in a great position. But should he hit it and get it safe,

all the colours are there for the taking.

That's why I mentioned getting a baulk colour safe. No advantage at

all in playing the way he did. Good hit. Got plenty of distance

between cue ball and red ball. We mentioned kicks earlier. That was

the worst kick we've seen. Has the brown come to his rescue?

I think he may be just on enough of this red. That's unfortunate for

David Grace. He's pinched a couple of frames in

this session so far, Kyren Wilson. Will this be another one?

It's a bit betri. -- betwixt and between here.

He's too near the cushion to force the blue to come back round for the

yellow. He was trying to work out whether he

will need the black. He will. He can win the frame without the

black. Another bad contact. Amazing, we had

one kick in the first session this morning. We've already had three in

this session so far. All the pace out of the cue ball,

that kick. The frame that could have gone

either way, I'm sure David Grace will have been disappointed not to

have won it. A couple of frames after this, will

finish off the session. The cue ball nicely on the groan. --

green. We know the black pots into the

corner. He had a similar shot in one of the previous frames, a little

standard run through and he missed it. He has got previous and has to

be very careful. That's better. Well done. As long as

he gets onto the red on to the left of the black, he should be playing

for the next 30 points. Needs to make sure he doesn't overhit this.

Or worse still, underhit it. I think his body language is telling us he

is on this red but not as much as he would like.

He's got a nice angle on the black going into the pack of six or seven

reds. Oh, but you must pot the black. A

bit of a nervy one. Now is probably taking a big part in

this game, every time he needs to make something happen, he seems to

struggle but when this is all plain sailing, he looks in control.

Nicely done, to get the black, a bonus as well, two reds left closest

to each other. Looks like a straightforward plant. That

certainly helps his cause. There you see them.

Get back nicely up for the blue, I would say, after this.

A little bit more pace... Fell nicely on the yellow. Over the two

loose threads above the black. Doesn't have to hit these reds too

hard. The balls in a prone position. You

would be amazed if Kyren Wilson doesn't go on to win this frame with

this visit. Another friend David Grace was in first. -- another frame

David Grace was in first. He will be kicking himself if he doesn't come

out of this session 5-4 behind. This frame looks like it will disappear.

What could have been. In this opening session.

It's not the best shot he has played. It is near the cushion, he

will have to dig into the cue ball. Going to require a good pot to get

into the right centre pocket. I think his choice is into the

middle. Amazing when you lose position,

however thing gets harder and harder. Excellent pot but because he

had lost position on the previous shot, he potted the tough part in

the middle and lost the cue ball again and then he needs to play a

good brown or pink, whichever he decides. He would like to kiss into

the red on the right. That's what he has played. Has he just flipped it

enough to pot into the yellow pocket? He did flick the red and

push it a bit further to the left but this might be puttable.

That was very tight obviously and he had a really good bit of fortune.

David Mayo pot the long red near the yellow. That kiss came and that red

would have been a certainty in the middle. A slice of good fortune.

That wasn't a bad flick of the red either. He flicked it back into

baulk. And it didn't go anywhere near the cushion.

Concentrated so hard on getting the object ball safe, forgot to keep the

cue ball say. This can be potted in the middle. Got to be careful not to

play careless safety shots like that. 25 in front, the pink 31,

bringing the red into play, play the cannon and hope you get the red into

the middle. That puts in 32 in front. He

probably feels he can screw back and get onto the yellow in the

right-hand corner. He could. This is frame ball and what a friend

this has been again, another one that could have gone either way. He

has lost at least three of those frames that could have gone either

way. Just the run-up to the black now. 35

points in front so he probably feels he can take the green on with a bit

of confidence. Strange way of playing the green but

it's gone in. He dots the is and crosses the ts.

He knows he will be in front now whatever happens. That is really a

Judd Trump positional shot, that little tap on the table.

He made a 48 in the break and finish with a contribution. David Grace

trails 5-2. This is tough to get safe. Maybe the

one next to the black, you can click that. The double-kiss is on the, he

has to be careful with this shot. So much so, does rolling up to the reds

to contain safety. Once again, the pace is nowhere near. It's one of

those, do I play this pot or not? This is where it should be and this

is where it is now so an inch away closer to the cushion it should have

been but still playing the same shot.

Isn't it amazing how he had a different mindset? Because he hit

the red, it may have forced into playing this red. He's got to make,

dig down into the cue ball again. He has done that already in this match,

digging down into the cue ball. Difficult to judge that by the judge

did pretty well. Judging the cannon on the black. The cue ball is

bouncing quite a lot before it reaches the object ball.

This is a test of cueing after the way he has been cueing the second

half of this session. Potted all of those in the first four frames. A 31

point lead doesn't sound very much with six frames on but it's

equivalent to about 60 or 70 point lead. Black actor play, blew out of

play, all of the reds out of commission. -- black out of play,

the blue out of play. So easy to hit these thick when

playing the safety shot. What was the problem? So easy to hit that

thick, if you play it ten times, you get it right about three or four.

Kiss into the black so he has been very fortunate.

Not too sure about this red. He is having a good look at it. It is

tight. Decided it does pot. He is looking at the red in the

middle and it looks like he has decided to play the cut into the

middle. I can't see how he is going to get underway colour, playing the

red in the middle. It is tight but he doesn't have to

do too much with the cue ball, just drop it in. It's quite a nice angle,

where the cue ball is position. Just drop it in and get on the two reds,

one beside the pink and one to the right of the black spot.

Could have played that a little better but it's OK.

If David goes on to lose this frame, he will be absolutely gutted.

All the reds were safe, the black was safe, five minutes later, the
