CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
Hello everyone. Welcome to the start | 0:00:37 | 0:00:41
of the BBC's coverage of the World
Indoor Bowls Championships at the | 0:00:41 | 0:00:47
Potter's Resort in Great Yarmouth.
This is the 20th time that it is | 0:00:47 | 0:00:51
held here at Potters. There are four
major trophies up for grabs this | 0:00:51 | 0:00:56
week. When you look through the Roll
of Honour, the singles in particular | 0:00:56 | 0:01:01
reminds us of a time when things
were done a little bit differently. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:13
So David Bryant has won a really
remarkable game. There it is. David | 0:01:13 | 0:01:22
Bryant champion in 1979 and champion
again in 1980. He needs to have a | 0:01:22 | 0:01:28
bowl of his life here. He has missed
and David Bryant is the world | 0:01:28 | 0:01:34
champion. He's very close. Did he
fall in? Yes, he fell in, and | 0:01:34 | 0:01:47
touched the jack. That was an
amazing last bowl from Phil | 0:01:47 | 0:01:53
Scotland. Hugh Duff has three shots.
It depends on this bowl. It's all | 0:01:53 | 0:02:02
over. A quite marvellous display of
bowling by this 24-year-old, the | 0:02:02 | 0:02:08
youngest ever world singles champion
indoor or out. And Price behind the | 0:02:08 | 0:02:17
screen daren't look. This is to save
the championship. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:24
screen daren't look. This is to save
the championship. The shot to John | 0:02:26 | 0:02:31
Price. The stadium erupts and the
celebration begin. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:39
celebration begin. -- celebrations
begin. No, it's not a kangaroo, it | 0:02:39 | 0:02:45
is Ian. He is the world champion at
last. He takes the world title for | 0:02:45 | 0:02:51
the very first time. He is going to
strike the bowl off for the | 0:02:51 | 0:02:56
championship. Got it! What a way to
win the world title for the third | 0:02:56 | 0:03:04
time. And Andy Thompson jumped a
mile high and the unseeded junior | 0:03:04 | 0:03:14
beats the 1988 world indoor
champion, Hugh Duff a standing | 0:03:14 | 0:03:21
ovation and don't they deserve it?
And all the fingers are crossed here | 0:03:21 | 0:03:29
as he attempts to save the match.
He's overweight. The new champion of | 0:03:29 | 0:03:37
the world. Look at that smile.
APPLAUSE | 0:03:37 | 0:03:41
He takes the title for fifth time.
He has just made history once again. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:55
Well, the head in the hands for
Stewart Anderson. The emotion has | 0:03:57 | 0:04:01
just hit him. He is now the 2013
world champion. The marshal Alex | 0:04:01 | 0:04:12
lifts his hand and he is the best in
the world. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:20
the world. The world indoors singles
champion, Nicky Brett. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:24
COMMENTATOR: His fifth title. That's
what he was looking for. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:32
Wonderful memories of many of the
game's great players and Paul Foster | 0:04:32 | 0:04:36
is back to defend his title. We have
got the final of the pairs coming up | 0:04:36 | 0:04:41
live on BBC Two this afternoon, but
we're going to bring you news of | 0:04:41 | 0:04:46
what is happening in the first round
of the singles. Paul Foster is | 0:04:46 | 0:04:55
playing Lea Blackham later on this
afternoon. | 0:04:55 | 0:05:03
Scott Edwards is also through.
At the bottom of the list you would | 0:05:19 | 0:05:24
have seen the match between Greg
Harlow and Martin Puckett and we | 0:05:24 | 0:05:30
will bring you news of what happened
in that match. This was | 0:05:30 | 0:05:40
in that match. This was a battle of
the generations. The early exchanges | 0:05:40 | 0:05:42
were marked by high quality draw
shots from both players. Harlow made | 0:05:42 | 0:05:48
the early running, but it was
Puckett who took the first set, 7-6. | 0:05:48 | 0:06:01
Puckett was runner-up in last year's
semifinal. This brave shot looked | 0:06:07 | 0:06:14
enough to salvage something from a
seemingly hopeless position. | 0:06:14 | 0:06:23
APPLAUSE
But Harlow making his 21st | 0:06:25 | 0:06:26
appearance in the world singles was
matching him blow for blow, playing | 0:06:26 | 0:06:30
in the first of two matches today,
he'll team up with Nick Brett in the | 0:06:30 | 0:06:33
final of the pairs this afternoon.
This beautiful reply gave him a | 0:06:33 | 0:06:37
single to extend the lead. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:43
single to extend the lead. Harlow
went on to take the second set 9-4. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
So into the best of three tie-break
and Puck et took on this drive. His | 0:06:48 | 0:06:56
last end perfectly judged for the
early advantage. It was Harlow's | 0:06:56 | 0:07:02
turn to produce a brilliant weighted
shot. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:12 | |
shot. A great strike and a perfect
outcome to leave him lying shot and | 0:07:12 | 0:07:15
back on level terms.
APPLAUSE | 0:07:15 | 0:07:22
And Harlow turned the screw in the
last end leaving Puckeett needing to | 0:07:22 | 0:07:29
make a difficult backhand shot. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:35
make a difficult backhand shot. It
wasn't to be and the dream was over | 0:07:38 | 0:07:41
for the young pretender. Harlow
through to the second round where | 0:07:41 | 0:07:45
Scott Edwards awaits. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:55
APPLAUSE
And so this is how it looks for the | 0:08:00 | 0:08:03
second round: | 0:08:03 | 0:08:07
Alongside me two men who will be
doing the commentary for the BBC | 0:08:25 | 0:08:28
throughout the week, David Corkhill,
who is the voice of BBC bowls, | 0:08:28 | 0:08:31
alongside a former champion, John
Price. John, we're going to stay | 0:08:31 | 0:08:35
with you because when we were
looking through the great memories | 0:08:35 | 0:08:38
we saw some wonderful shots of a
young John Price if you don't mind | 0:08:38 | 0:08:42
me saying! 1990, 28 years ago.
Exactly. The hair was a bit browner | 0:08:42 | 0:08:48
then. I think it was a bit thinner
as well. Tell us about this moment | 0:08:48 | 0:08:54
because you couldn't seen bear to
look? No, this was nerve-wracking. | 0:08:54 | 0:09:01
You could never say you had him. The
last bowl was coming down and I | 0:09:01 | 0:09:05
didn't want to look because I
thought I might have to play another | 0:09:05 | 0:09:09
end. It was a great moment and it
lives long in the memory. How old | 0:09:09 | 0:09:14
were you Corky? Primary school!
LAUGHTER | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
Yeah, sure. Were you commentating on
this one? I might have been | 0:09:17 | 0:09:22
actually. It was so long ago, I
don't think so, but I might have | 0:09:22 | 0:09:25
been. What did this moment mean to
you, John? Everything because at the | 0:09:25 | 0:09:28
time I had been close a few times.
To win this was just a magic moment | 0:09:28 | 0:09:34
and all the family were there and
just a great, great evening and we | 0:09:34 | 0:09:40
had a few Welsh hymns in the bar
after. To find your name on that | 0:09:40 | 0:09:44
Roll of Honour with so many great
players. Now look look back and talk | 0:09:44 | 0:09:55
about the great names. It was a
privilege to be there and to be part | 0:09:55 | 0:09:59
of it. Looking ahead to what we've
got Corky and we've lost a couple of | 0:09:59 | 0:10:03
the big names. Alex Marshal along
with Andy Tom sob ch son, but it | 0:10:03 | 0:10:09
always signifies some fresh blood
coming through. We see on the match | 0:10:09 | 0:10:13
this morning where Martin was
superb. He was a different player | 0:10:13 | 0:10:16
than what he was last year when he
was here in the under-25s and he | 0:10:16 | 0:10:20
pushed Greg all the way and as a
performance goes, Martin was just | 0:10:20 | 0:10:24
standing, but as you said in your
interview, it is about getting over | 0:10:24 | 0:10:30
the line and great champions get
over the line. John, David, thank | 0:10:30 | 0:10:32
you very much. We'll move on because
we will start focussing now on the | 0:10:32 | 0:10:36
final of the pairs which is about to
take place on the blue ring today | 0:10:36 | 0:10:40
and it is an all England line up. It
features John features Jamie | 0:10:40 | 0:10:51
Chesters and Mark Dawes.
So let's hear from the four | 0:10:51 | 0:10:56
finalists who are focussing on
partnerships. | 0:10:56 | 0:11:06
partnerships. Obviously at moment
we're ranked one and two in the | 0:11:06 | 0:11:08
world. O So quite rightly we should
be a good pair and we are, but it is | 0:11:08 | 0:11:14
not about playing good bowls, it is
about gelling together and | 0:11:14 | 0:11:21
understanding each other's shot
play. And tactically, we've always | 0:11:21 | 0:11:24
seen it together the same way so win
or lose, we'll know for us, we've | 0:11:24 | 0:11:29
played the right shot or four games.
That's my touch. I went to play with | 0:11:29 | 0:11:36
Greg when I was, when we were both
younger if you like and he has | 0:11:36 | 0:11:39
taught me a lot in the game. How to
go on during the game and off the | 0:11:39 | 0:11:44
field if you like. He's pretty calm
which is good playing with someone | 0:11:44 | 0:11:50
with red hair! I would say my
biggest strength is calming Nick | 0:11:50 | 0:11:55
down. That's probably the one thing
that's worked all the way through | 0:11:55 | 0:11:59
our playing relationship. So yeah,
it is pretty easy for us to play | 0:11:59 | 0:12:03
together and pretty easy for us to
sit-in the bar together or coffee | 0:12:03 | 0:12:08
shop, whichever way you want to
sit... Coffee shop, bar. Both of | 0:12:08 | 0:12:17
them are great players. Good friends
as well which probably makes it a | 0:12:17 | 0:12:21
little bit easier, but me and Jamie
know it is difficult playing against | 0:12:21 | 0:12:25
two great players and hopefully we
can put them under pressure and see | 0:12:25 | 0:12:28
if we can get the victory. The thing
with today we're all sort of the | 0:12:28 | 0:12:33
four of us probably really good
friends as well so there is not | 0:12:33 | 0:12:36
going to be any surprises when it
comes to shots or anything like | 0:12:36 | 0:12:40
that. We're pretty much going to
know what the opposition are going | 0:12:40 | 0:12:43
to try to do. It is whoever can
execute it better on the day. I | 0:12:43 | 0:12:49
don't think there is any particular
strategy. We all know each other's | 0:12:49 | 0:12:55
games and hopefully we can play
better on the day. | 0:12:55 | 0:13:03
better on the day. Forget snooker
and darcts let's play some bowls! It | 0:13:03 | 0:13:06
should be a high quality match. This
is the route to the final: | 0:13:06 | 0:13:24
So we're just about all set. So it's
time to hand over to our MC, Richard | 0:13:27 | 0:13:32
who will be introduce the players.
There is an air of anticipation and | 0:13:32 | 0:13:39
excitement here in the International
Arena because we are about to play | 0:13:39 | 0:13:43
our very first final of this just
world indoor Bowles championships. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:49
The crowd are ready. The players are
ready. So let's get them on to this | 0:13:49 | 0:13:54
famous blue carpet. First up, two
stars who have secured their place | 0:13:54 | 0:13:59
in the world's top 16, last year's
semi-finalist and hoping this year | 0:13:59 | 0:14:02
to go all the way, | 0:14:02 | 0:14:12
to go all the way, give tip for
Jamie Chestney and Mark Dawes. | 0:14:13 | 0:14:20
Plus | 0:14:20 | 0:14:28 | |
APPLAUSE
And now two of the most formidable | 0:14:29 | 0:14:32
and respected players on the
circuit. Hoping to recreate the | 0:14:32 | 0:14:36
magic they had in this final four
years ago. It is the 2014 world | 0:14:36 | 0:14:44
indoor pairs champion Nick Brett and
Greg Harlow. | 0:14:44 | 0:14:53
APPLAUSE
There is a really good atmosphere | 0:14:56 | 0:15:06
inside the auditorium. Meanwhile
Corky and Pricey are standing by in | 0:15:06 | 0:15:10
the commentary box. This should be a
cracker. | 0:15:10 | 0:15:14
the commentary box. This should be a
cracker. | 0:15:14 | 0:15:15
COMMENTATOR: Thank you, Rishi. There
is no doubt about it, you couldn't | 0:15:15 | 0:15:19
ask for a better final. Combination
work does Jamie Chestney, he played | 0:15:19 | 0:15:25
very well in this event and in
particular Jamie Chestney with the | 0:15:25 | 0:15:29
big bowls. He played some superb
last deliveries and a memory of Mark | 0:15:29 | 0:15:35
Dawes running down the rink to
celebrate and congratulate him. But | 0:15:35 | 0:15:41
they're really up against this world
number one and number two and | 0:15:41 | 0:15:45
previous champions. It's going to be
a very difficult one to overcome. | 0:15:45 | 0:15:53
But we are all hoping for a great
game, went we, John? I'm sure we'll | 0:15:59 | 0:16:05
get one. There is lots of quality on
the rink. A slight change, of | 0:16:05 | 0:16:13
course, to the pairs. We've got an
extra bowl now. It's three bowls | 0:16:13 | 0:16:18
each. Previously it was two bowls.
And of course, it is nine ends not | 0:16:18 | 0:16:27
11 ends. A little change there
because we've got more bowls. The | 0:16:27 | 0:16:31
previous matches have all been over
seven. | 0:16:31 | 0:16:35
And my good colleague here John
Price will keep me right if I make | 0:16:35 | 0:16:40
anything that happens to be a
mistake, John you'll correct me, I | 0:16:40 | 0:16:44
know you will. I'll pull you out
Dave. I've got my notes and | 0:16:44 | 0:16:49
homework. Yes, it has all been done
on the back of a postage stamp as | 0:16:49 | 0:16:54
usual. You made a good point at the
start, it is three ball pairs and it | 0:16:54 | 0:16:58
is a change from the old days when
two bowls was a demanding game. You | 0:16:58 | 0:17:03
have got a chance to play yourself
into form and there is more shot | 0:17:03 | 0:17:06
plays. It is more interesting for
the spectators. Absolutely. It's | 0:17:06 | 0:17:11
going to create opportunities.
Probably more discussion as well, | 0:17:11 | 0:17:16
John, I think, the games, although
they are a couple of ends shorter | 0:17:16 | 0:17:20
they are turning out to be longer,
not much, just a little bit | 0:17:20 | 0:17:23
depending on what happens, but we
still have the three end tie-break | 0:17:23 | 0:17:26
to separate the pairs.
APPLAUSE | 0:17:26 | 0:17:36
An impressive start there.
Greg, last bowl of the leads. | 0:17:36 | 0:17:52
It is Nicky and Greg's ability to
play the weight shot. A little bit | 0:17:59 | 0:18:03
unlucky the jack didn't come out.
Yeah, it was a good strike. Nine | 0:18:03 | 0:18:08
times out of ten that jack would
have moved. | 0:18:08 | 0:18:14
have moved. Quite unusual not to see
Nicky not playing back end in this | 0:18:19 | 0:18:23
partnership. Greg would have skipped
and Nicky would have been the lead | 0:18:23 | 0:18:26
man. Yes, although it was styles of
play, of course, Nicky Brett very, | 0:18:26 | 0:18:34
very good at the conversion shot and
of course, Greg is too. So, it is a | 0:18:34 | 0:18:38
bit of a toss up who plays leading
skip, but Mark Dawes was recognised | 0:18:38 | 0:18:47
as an international lead for a long
time. He has moved down the league, | 0:18:47 | 0:18:52
but a very good drawer. Yes, made
his name for England as a top class | 0:18:52 | 0:18:56
lead. Mark got a background, of
course, he comes from the Blackpool | 0:18:56 | 0:19:01
area. Very much so. | 0:19:01 | 0:19:13
I remember David from up there. Some
Crown Green players have been very | 0:19:17 | 0:19:21
good. | 0:19:21 | 0:19:26 | |
good. Noel Burrows is another one.
He favours the fore hand. | 0:19:26 | 0:19:39
That was the danger, wasn't it,
John? Yes, very unfortunate. Good | 0:19:42 | 0:19:48
weight if he got past the green.
Just tumble it over. That's why I | 0:19:48 | 0:19:55
thought he would have played the
backhand. | 0:19:55 | 0:20:03
It's backhand for Nicky definitely.
Just reach that red bowl behind the | 0:20:04 | 0:20:10
jack.
He's very close, isn't he? | 0:20:10 | 0:20:22
APPLAUSE
Another one in. It's a good third. | 0:20:22 | 0:20:32
Another one in. It's a good third. I
have got to say, it's a good bowl | 0:20:32 | 0:20:35
that's just rested on the green.
There is still a shot for Jamie off | 0:20:35 | 0:20:39
his own bowl there on the fore hand.
That's what he's looking at. He is | 0:20:39 | 0:20:45
looking at all sorts of angles,
isn't he? He seemed to be looking | 0:20:45 | 0:20:50
inside. I can't really see how the
angle would work. He is looking at a | 0:20:50 | 0:20:55
few things. If I plays firm weight
this, he could get the green on to | 0:20:55 | 0:20:59
the red and get a result, but that
bowl at 11 o'clock, he could get off | 0:20:59 | 0:21:02
that into the green short bowl.
Playing weight. Well, this is a bit | 0:21:02 | 0:21:12
speculative. | 0:21:12 | 0:21:17
speculative. Well, he certainly
bounced the jack outment I'm not | 0:21:17 | 0:21:24
sure whose line is the shot. He was
looking at that angle and it worked | 0:21:24 | 0:21:29
out quite well, but I'm not sure he
made the shot. It's a running bowl, | 0:21:29 | 0:21:34
not a full drive. Quite good at
that, Jamie. He, he has converted it | 0:21:34 | 0:21:42
back to the red. So had to rely on a
little bit of luck. But in the area. | 0:21:42 | 0:21:54
Oh, just got it wrong. Did nudge of
the green bowl though. I wonder if | 0:22:03 | 0:22:08
that has made a difference?
Greg is having a very, if you are | 0:22:08 | 0:22:15
looking at it that way, Greg, get
the umpire out. It did give a it a | 0:22:15 | 0:22:23
little nudge and it is resting
against the other green bowl so that | 0:22:23 | 0:22:27
will stay where it is. | 0:22:27 | 0:22:35
Well, Mark Dawes has got the mat in
his hand so he must favour that he's | 0:22:45 | 0:22:49
got the shot. Alan Thornhill was
sorted out. Goodness, that is close. | 0:22:49 | 0:22:59
Senior marker Alan Thornhill. He has
been on the circuit now for a few | 0:22:59 | 0:23:03
years. | 0:23:03 | 0:23:08
UMPIRE: One shot, Chestney and
Dawes. | 0:23:18 | 0:23:26
The marker is Dan Blewitt. Another
experienced World Bowls Tour | 0:23:40 | 0:23:47
official. | 0:23:47 | 0:23:54
Slight movement there. Greg pulls
out on the delivery. | 0:24:00 | 0:24:09
out on the delivery. Very simple
action, Greg Harlow. Always been the | 0:24:10 | 0:24:12
same. Not a lot can go wrong with
this delivery action. No, it is very | 0:24:12 | 0:24:18
easy. No shot clock, of course, in
the pairs. But the leads are not | 0:24:18 | 0:24:27
allowed to come up to the head after
the jack. | 0:24:27 | 0:24:35
the jack. Until they have completed
all their bowls. It keeps the game | 0:24:35 | 0:24:39
moving. I think that's the idea.
APPLAUSE | 0:24:39 | 0:24:50
I think it's fair to say, it is not
so much getting the shot with the | 0:24:57 | 0:25:01
lead players, David, it is about
getting position for your skip, | 0:25:01 | 0:25:04
isn't it? Sometimes you can be one
down, but in a very good position, | 0:25:04 | 0:25:08
so it is about getting bowls around
the head. Yes, that really applies, | 0:25:08 | 0:25:12
I think, when you get into the
disciplines of pairs, triples and | 0:25:12 | 0:25:17
fours. It is not always about
getting the shot, as you say, John, | 0:25:17 | 0:25:21
it is about offering up the
opportunity for your skip to play | 0:25:21 | 0:25:24
something. Something that by-passes
a lot of people. The front send a | 0:25:24 | 0:25:34
protector as well. So you really
have a choice here. You get | 0:25:34 | 0:25:37
something close or you try and
remove the front two bowls. So Greg | 0:25:37 | 0:25:44
is playing the weight shot and
trying to get into the front two | 0:25:44 | 0:25:48
bowls to open them up. There we go.
Now, Nicky will be very happy with | 0:25:48 | 0:25:53
that. He's still two shots down, but
he'll be very happy with it. | 0:25:53 | 0:26:02
The beauty about having someone like
Greg playing lead, he has the | 0:26:15 | 0:26:19
capability of playing another shot
if you're in trouble. It is an | 0:26:19 | 0:26:23
interesting change to the three
bowls after all the years of two. | 0:26:23 | 0:26:26
The jury is out on it. Some players
like it. Some don't. It adds an | 0:26:26 | 0:26:30
awful lot to the game in terms of
shot play, but some might say it | 0:26:30 | 0:26:33
takes the purity away of the two
bowls. Yes, of course, back home we | 0:26:33 | 0:26:39
normally play four-ball pairs in the
national, David. It is too many. I | 0:26:39 | 0:26:43
think that needs to be changed. We
need to move forward. Three bowls is | 0:26:43 | 0:26:48
the way forward. The chances of that
happening, at club and national | 0:26:48 | 0:26:55
level, probably zero, but anyway.
Nicky on the attack. Oh, that was | 0:26:55 | 0:27:03
unlucky. That was a horrible result.
Well, it's a good hit anyway. He | 0:27:03 | 0:27:09
changed the lie of those balls. It
will give him a chance with his next | 0:27:09 | 0:27:14
delivery. | 0:27:14 | 0:27:19
Just a little bit wider on the
target. Won't change Nicky. He will | 0:27:38 | 0:27:42
be after this. | 0:27:42 | 0:27:52
Well again, it's a very bad result.
Yes, he wanted movement on the jack. | 0:27:53 | 0:27:59
It is a rueful smile because he
realised that the gap just didn't | 0:27:59 | 0:28:05
appear to be there. It was big
enough for a bowl to go through and | 0:28:05 | 0:28:08
it must be at least five inches wide
for that to happen. Jamie might be | 0:28:08 | 0:28:12
tempted to go past here. There is a
couple of red bowls near the ditch. | 0:28:12 | 0:28:19
The back bowl might be the order of
the day. At the same time he will be | 0:28:19 | 0:28:24
thinking well, if I can block Nicky,
I'm 9-3, he's going on the other | 0:28:24 | 0:28:31
side for the green bowls, John and
he has covered that. I thought he | 0:28:31 | 0:28:34
might just in case. It all depends
where the jack goes. Oh, has it | 0:28:34 | 0:28:40
stopped in time? | 0:28:40 | 0:28:47
stopped in time? I think he'll go
again because two reds out, jack | 0:28:48 | 0:28:51
through, follow through, might lose
one, but probably no more. | 0:28:51 | 0:29:00
one, but probably no more. An
expectant crowd. Going again. Close. | 0:29:02 | 0:29:08
Two bowls. There it goes. He will be
happy to get it down to a single. | 0:29:08 | 0:29:19
UMPIRE: One shot, Chestney and
Dawes. | 0:29:19 | 0:29:22
APPLAUSE | 0:29:22 | 0:29:32
UMPIRE: Jack length, 29 meters. | 0:29:56 | 0:30:05
A very good opener from Mark Dawes. | 0:30:10 | 0:30:17
Back. The further the better now. A
bowl short. | 0:30:35 | 0:30:42
Great shot. Well done, well done.
Great shot. Those situations always | 0:31:04 | 0:31:12
beneficial. | 0:31:12 | 0:31:19
Right up now. And again. And again.
And again. Yes, good. Well done. | 0:31:25 | 0:31:38
You are always trying to be
positive, John, but I'm not | 0:31:39 | 0:31:42
convinced that's any better, to be
honest with you, but he was very, | 0:31:42 | 0:31:45
very close to getting what he
wanted. You can hear James saying, | 0:31:45 | 0:31:51
nail it. If he gets a front-toucher,
they're in trouble. Very good. | 0:31:51 | 0:32:05
Well played.
APPLAUSE. | 0:32:24 | 0:32:34
Just fades away at the end so gives
Jamie a little shot down on to that | 0:32:35 | 0:32:39
ball. | 0:32:39 | 0:32:45 | |
ball. I'll try that. Even if I go
around... | 0:32:45 | 0:32:50
The way he was saying that, looks as
though he might play the back hand. | 0:32:50 | 0:32:57
If he turns the jack it's good.
Shoulder to come off. Well, it's | 0:32:57 | 0:33:04
more the shot we were thinking of,
John. He's got lots of options on | 0:33:04 | 0:33:12
either side. Needs to pull back
quickly. | 0:33:12 | 0:33:18
Doesn't help. He's infortunate. Just
covered the green ball. There are | 0:33:18 | 0:33:28
still options down the other side
snow. Still prefer to be in the red | 0:33:28 | 0:33:33
position. | 0:33:33 | 0:33:36
Very good. Well done. That's very
decent. | 0:33:36 | 0:33:46
Back hand Chestney little turn on
the back for two. | 0:33:51 | 0:33:55
Waiting to see if he's got the power
to arrive to the jack. | 0:33:57 | 0:34:03
14 inches. | 0:34:03 | 0:34:10
Nick is not sure if he's wide
enough. | 0:34:15 | 0:34:19
Nick always lets you know. He's
quite a character, always got an | 0:34:23 | 0:34:28
opinion. He's a very honest player.
Doesn't always go down well with | 0:34:28 | 0:34:35
certain selectors. | 0:34:35 | 0:34:40
Take the rough with the smooth. If
you ask a players' opinion, don't | 0:34:40 | 0:34:47
like what they say, well don't ask
the question. Second chance for | 0:34:47 | 0:34:51
Jamie Chestney. | 0:34:51 | 0:34:53
I don't think so. Struggling. | 0:35:03 | 0:35:11
A gentle draw in. | 0:35:12 | 0:35:14
Great effort. | 0:35:19 | 0:35:22
Oh, really good effort.
APPLAUSE. | 0:35:27 | 0:35:35
So many bowls there now, John, that
it's hard to remember when the last | 0:35:36 | 0:35:40
bowl was coming up, but of course we
are very fortunate in the commentary | 0:35:40 | 0:35:44
box, we have got an expert back who
tells us when it's the last bowl and | 0:35:44 | 0:35:49
never gets it wrong. It's great, it
really is. We've got all the help we | 0:35:49 | 0:35:54
need. | 0:35:54 | 0:35:58 | |
The best seat in the house. With the
best advice. | 0:35:58 | 0:36:08
And nothing to disturb us this time. | 0:36:12 | 0:36:19
Hard as you can. Well played.
APPLAUSE. | 0:36:28 | 0:36:31
. Close bowls being drawn into the
jack. There'll be a bit of sparring | 0:36:31 | 0:36:41
here. It's going to be a long match,
no doubt about that. | 0:36:41 | 0:36:46
Mark Dawes, number 12 in the world
and Jimmy Chestney is very good. In | 0:36:51 | 0:36:58
terms of the shot play as well, the
there are no weaknesses. | 0:36:58 | 0:37:09
Good again. Even better. | 0:37:16 | 0:37:20
It's early days but Mark Dawes can
drive very accurately as well. | 0:37:24 | 0:37:31
Doesn't want to put a short bowl in
and get in the way. This is not very | 0:37:31 | 0:37:36
good. That is not the best place to
be. Still there but you don't want | 0:37:36 | 0:37:43
to shove the jack out. | 0:37:43 | 0:37:48
Moves his hand very well in this
direction. A little bit more weight | 0:37:59 | 0:38:04
coming into position. As long as you
miss your own you're good, as Nick | 0:38:04 | 0:38:08
said.
APPLAUSE. | 0:38:08 | 0:38:20
What an effort! | 0:38:31 | 0:38:34
Great shot. | 0:38:36 | 0:38:42
A good position for Nicky. Get it
out on the spot. | 0:39:20 | 0:39:31
Bounce that bowl on to the jack if
he can. | 0:39:31 | 0:39:41
he can. Not the best result it's
fair to say. Looking for something a | 0:39:41 | 0:39:49
bit better from that result. | 0:39:49 | 0:39:56
Left that forehand for Jamie. | 0:40:04 | 0:40:13
Forehand draw. Sit off mine you're
pretty close, to be honest. | 0:40:14 | 0:40:25
It's not that difficult. | 0:40:28 | 0:40:33
Everybody sees it differently. Just
won't make it though. | 0:40:33 | 0:40:44
Just a little short. Well played. I
wonder if he'd be a bit more | 0:41:09 | 0:41:19
aggressive at this stage. Gets him
on to the front green and the back | 0:41:19 | 0:41:22
green as well. It does. Back
positions pretty mixed. Certainly | 0:41:22 | 0:41:30
what we call an arriving draw. That
means something else usually within | 0:41:30 | 0:41:35
about 15, 18 inches of weight. A
chance to use the angle as well. | 0:41:35 | 0:41:45
Didn't have that extra half yard
that he needed. | 0:41:45 | 0:41:53
A packed arena. Very well
marshalled. They're volunteers who | 0:42:16 | 0:42:28
marshal the spectators in and out.
Not expecting crowd trouble? ! Well, | 0:42:28 | 0:42:35
the bowlers don't like to be
disturbed. You're all a bit | 0:42:35 | 0:42:40
precious, John! | 0:42:40 | 0:42:47
You'll have your probables tonight
within Liverpool take on the Swan, | 0:42:50 | 0:42:54
don't worry! -- problems. | 0:42:54 | 0:43:00
There'll be live commentary on Five
Live. I'll be watching with great | 0:43:00 | 0:43:04
interest. After we finish here of
course on the late shift! | 0:43:04 | 0:43:09
We'll get the highlights somewhere.
Or the low lights, from your point | 0:43:16 | 0:43:21
of view. Now then... Greg. Look at
the adjustment on the first. | 0:43:21 | 0:43:33
Change of side now. | 0:43:35 | 0:43:41
Very fast on the mat. Doesn't waste
any time. | 0:43:42 | 0:43:48
You can give that a chance. | 0:43:56 | 0:44:03
Some players don't wait for bowl to
stop before they play their one. I | 0:44:03 | 0:44:07
think the rule says it has to stop.
And it does. In terms of playing | 0:44:07 | 0:44:12
here, we always wait. They're keen
to get on with it. | 0:44:12 | 0:44:15
A bend at the end. The back end of
the red. That is going to be shot | 0:44:17 | 0:44:21
against. Well, it moved the jack.
Managed to get away with it. | 0:44:21 | 0:44:28
Finds a foot on the last delivery. | 0:44:33 | 0:44:37
Where's it gone? Behind the green
ball. | 0:44:50 | 0:45:00 | |
Well, we knew it was going to be
quality, John, but it's great to see | 0:45:00 | 0:45:06
the pairs with three bowls. Five
bowls there within a few inches of | 0:45:06 | 0:45:10
the jack. | 0:45:10 | 0:45:17
If that bowl fell over, he'd
probably have rested the green away | 0:45:17 | 0:45:19
as well. Five great deliveries all
within inches. | 0:45:19 | 0:45:30
You get a feeling in this game that
one end could be the difference. | 0:45:30 | 0:45:33
It's going to be very, very tight.
Lots of close bowls. One break here | 0:45:33 | 0:45:40
or there, one good shot or lucky
shot maybe could be the difference. | 0:45:40 | 0:45:44
Interesting choice for Nicky. Trying
to take all the danger away by | 0:45:44 | 0:45:49
running the two bowls off. | 0:45:49 | 0:45:51
He obviously feels he's at risk
here. You don't see that too often. | 0:45:53 | 0:46:01
I think he played it because he knew
the green bowl was covering his own | 0:46:01 | 0:46:06
shot ball. Missed it on the white to
get the two reds away. | 0:46:06 | 0:46:17
get the two reds away. Use the side
green. Very close. Needs to just | 0:46:17 | 0:46:22
touch it. | 0:46:22 | 0:46:26
Good and smooth. Surrounded. | 0:46:26 | 0:46:34
None of them look good...
Give me ten minutes! Chatting their | 0:46:35 | 0:46:43
way out of this one! I think I'd put
one through. A bit of banter between | 0:46:43 | 0:46:54
the two players who're in a bit of
trouble and not too sure what to | 0:46:54 | 0:46:57
play. | 0:46:57 | 0:47:04 | |
Decent from there. | 0:47:07 | 0:47:12
Probably only going to draw it
though. Just get to the side green. | 0:47:12 | 0:47:17
A little bit of turn off that. Going
to play good weight at this. | 0:47:17 | 0:47:27
He could get on to the green if he
turns the jack over. He's under | 0:47:27 | 0:47:33
again. He just didn't have the
weight really. | 0:47:33 | 0:47:43
A very brave draw for Nick. He's
afraid of dropping the red over. . | 0:48:05 | 0:48:21
A clever shot. Not sure Jimmy can
afford to use a lot of weight here. | 0:48:25 | 0:48:30
Not sure he's got the best position
in the world if the jack goes back. | 0:48:30 | 0:48:38
You can see what he is trying to do. | 0:48:40 | 0:48:48
If he gets back to the bowl, drops
it back, that might be enough. | 0:48:55 | 0:49:01
An interesting end. The line is
pretty good. Is he up? Dear me. | 0:49:07 | 0:49:21
Three short bowls there and a head
which, to be absolutely honest with | 0:49:21 | 0:49:24
you, is very much in his favour. | 0:49:24 | 0:49:32
There's the board. It's all very
tight at the moment. | 0:49:36 | 0:49:48
Jimmy Chestney's wife is a previous
gold medal winner in the Craigs, of | 0:50:07 | 0:50:11
course. -- the Commonwealth Games.
She left the venue this morning. She | 0:50:11 | 0:50:17
was loaded with a cold and coughing
all night and didn't want to pass it | 0:50:17 | 0:50:21
on to Jamie so she's returned home.
Very good of her to do that. Looking | 0:50:21 | 0:50:26
after her husband. | 0:50:26 | 0:50:31
Fully understandable. There are a
few people that have been struggling | 0:50:31 | 0:50:36
with colds and flus. | 0:50:36 | 0:50:42
It's very warm in here, extremely
uncomfortable if you are not feeling | 0:50:45 | 0:50:49
100%. | 0:50:49 | 0:50:54 | |
Not far away. | 0:51:07 | 0:51:12
Bowls away again by Mark Dawes who
doesn't waste any time. | 0:51:12 | 0:51:18
A good line this is. | 0:51:18 | 0:51:23
APPLAUSE. | 0:51:24 | 0:51:29
Very good singles player. He's been
making his way through the | 0:51:29 | 0:51:35
qualifying system. Now he's at
number 12. Everybody knows how | 0:51:35 | 0:51:40
dangerous he is. | 0:51:40 | 0:51:45
At the moment he's probably just had
the edge on the lead-in against | 0:52:04 | 0:52:07
Greg. He's had to play a few more
recovery bowls. Setting positions up | 0:52:07 | 0:52:13
well. Might be a little unlucky with
this one. Nicky would normedly not | 0:52:13 | 0:52:18
waste too much time with this --
normally. | 0:52:18 | 0:52:27
Going very tricky. Outside the
confines. Brought to the respot | 0:52:54 | 0:53:00
position. Doesn't happen that often
but occasionally the jack goes | 0:53:00 | 0:53:06
forward. | 0:53:06 | 0:53:08
Not bad but Jimmy would expect to
get closer than that. Never easy | 0:53:32 | 0:53:36
when you are going out there to the
bowl. You are never quite certain if | 0:53:36 | 0:53:40
the bowl is going to run on a little
bit. Right to the edge there. | 0:53:40 | 0:53:47
Flirted with the ditch. Hurry on
down, and again. Well done. That's | 0:53:47 | 0:53:52
the winner. | 0:53:52 | 0:53:54
Jimmy's line was good. Need to drop
a metre. | 0:54:02 | 0:54:09
Dropped too much I think. Get up...
It's struggling. It's not Jamie, | 0:54:09 | 0:54:16
really. He's just off a little bit.
The previous end he was dropping | 0:54:16 | 0:54:22
short. | 0:54:22 | 0:54:28
He's just inside the previous line.
Has he got the weight? He has. | 0:54:32 | 0:54:39
APPLAUSE. | 0:54:43 | 0:54:46
A little bit more to the inside on
the front. Holds the bowl up a bit | 0:54:48 | 0:54:53
longer. That is why he's ended up in
line with the previous bowl. | 0:54:53 | 0:54:59
So, last bowl of the end. | 0:55:03 | 0:55:11
Oh, this needs to stop. Needs to
pull up. | 0:55:14 | 0:55:19
Oh, he needed that one. He true the
shot but he'll be thinking down | 0:55:28 | 0:55:34
there, it took me three goes to get
it. So he'll not be happy. Better | 0:55:34 | 0:55:38
late than never though. Absolutely.
That is what the third bowl is for | 0:55:38 | 0:55:44
now. | 0:55:44 | 0:55:50 | |
Slightly on the longer side. | 0:56:09 | 0:56:11
Even through the singles, we haven't
seen too much of that either. In a | 0:56:19 | 0:56:26
match like this at the moment where
it's so close, neather wants to make | 0:56:26 | 0:56:30
a dramatic change that might lose
them the length. You make a big | 0:56:30 | 0:56:34
adjustment sometimes, it can affect
you as much as your opponent. It's | 0:56:34 | 0:56:37
only if you are going really badly
do you make changes. | 0:56:37 | 0:56:45
All the way up now. All the way
up... | 0:56:59 | 0:57:08 | |
27 and a half metres and didn't even
register a clap. It's a tough | 0:57:12 | 0:57:19
audience. It really is. | 0:57:19 | 0:57:27
Green on green, get the jack, get
the bowl... Get anything! I think | 0:57:46 | 0:57:50
that is what he was really saying
there. | 0:57:50 | 0:57:58
Going to get a bad one here. Oh, is
he not. I thought he'd taken his own | 0:57:58 | 0:58:03
two out. Yes. Slightly inside the
striking line. He's taken the other | 0:58:03 | 0:58:13
two bowls off the rink. My goodness
me, that held in. | 0:58:13 | 0:58:19
A bit fortunate. | 0:58:19 | 0:58:21
Robert Paxton. Very good World
Championships in Christchurch | 0:58:44 | 0:58:55
December 2016 for Robert. | 0:58:55 | 0:59:05
Either way I play for the split. | 0:59:20 | 0:59:28
Gets split perfect then it's even
better. | 0:59:28 | 0:59:37
better. He's opened the door. | 0:59:37 | 0:59:46
It's very warm there, it really is.
The house lights. | 0:59:53 | 0:59:59
It's a whole lot warmer when we had
the banks of hotheads coming down on | 1:00:00 | 1:00:06
us. | 1:00:06 | 1:00:12 | |
Again, he hasn't been able to nail
it. Finished on the spot, mate. | 1:00:14 | 1:00:19
Anything short of the spot should
win. It did last time. Took three | 1:00:19 | 1:00:24
bowls to get there. | 1:00:24 | 1:00:32
Oh right to the edge again. Well
played. He has played it | 1:00:36 | 1:00:41
brilliantly.
APPLAUSE | 1:00:41 | 1:00:50
I think Nick said, "You make it
sound easy" after the bowl had left | 1:00:50 | 1:00:55
his hand. He knew that was close.
The side line not as close as Nicky. | 1:00:55 | 1:01:11
He will do well to hold that line.
Pulls away at the end. Just a bit | 1:01:11 | 1:01:17
inside, but it was enough. A chance
for a double. A spare shot | 1:01:17 | 1:01:25
opportunity. | 1:01:25 | 1:01:30
He is even wider with this one.
Should be good if his weight is | 1:01:30 | 1:01:35
good. He is playing well out there,
isn't he? He likes the jack in that | 1:01:35 | 1:01:40
position.
APPLAUSE | 1:01:40 | 1:01:41
He hasn't missed too many
opportunities. A good double. Played | 1:01:41 | 1:01:49
the hit, John, opened it up and then
drew two shots. He's playing well, | 1:01:49 | 1:01:54
Nicky, at the moment. He had some
good recovery bowls and he's | 1:01:54 | 1:01:58
probably the difference. Oh, he is
at the minute. Mark Dawes had the | 1:01:58 | 1:02:04
edge on Greg in this first set so
far, but Nicky has been very, very | 1:02:04 | 1:02:09
consistent in his play. | 1:02:09 | 1:02:15
A good lead in. | 1:02:57 | 1:03:02
A big bend at the end and drop. Oh,
it looks like it might. A little | 1:03:21 | 1:03:26
touch on it. | 1:03:26 | 1:03:36
The Chestney-Daws combination really
needs to win this end. | 1:03:38 | 1:03:45
Es combination really needs to win
this | 1:03:53 | 1:03:57 | |
Greg is just reaching his own bowl.
Anything better he'll draw it clean | 1:04:06 | 1:04:10
and he has drawn it clean here.
APPLAUSE | 1:04:10 | 1:04:22
Well, that's going to hesitate a
change. | 1:04:22 | 1:04:29
change. -- necessitate a change. | 1:04:29 | 1:04:33
Tough to draw. Tough to make it. If
you can see the green bowl, you | 1:04:38 | 1:04:45
could get both of them. You can see
two-thirds of it. That's usually | 1:04:45 | 1:04:50
enough. He can probably still miss
his own red just about. He didn't | 1:04:50 | 1:05:00
want to take his own red. That was
the danger. He was so close to the | 1:05:00 | 1:05:04
red, but he had to get close to the
red to get the green. That was the | 1:05:04 | 1:05:08
rid k. It is unfortunate, but it is
a clear road for the two green. He | 1:05:08 | 1:05:16
knew that was just on the inside.
Yes, Mark. That replay was actually | 1:05:16 | 1:05:24
on the big screen and I think
everybody was looking at it. Very, | 1:05:24 | 1:05:28
very close. | 1:05:28 | 1:05:34
Sensible here, Nicky. He's dropping
it on the backhand. Well he knows he | 1:05:39 | 1:05:47
needs another one in there because
the two bowls can disappear and I | 1:05:47 | 1:05:53
don't imagine Jamie will play for
it. | 1:05:53 | 1:06:01 | |
No, he's under. | 1:06:03 | 1:06:09
It hasn't really helped, has t John?
That's just made the target a lot | 1:06:09 | 1:06:13
more difficult. The only thing is
they are a little bit further away. | 1:06:13 | 1:06:17
He has got more room if he did want
to draw it David. Nicky will be | 1:06:17 | 1:06:22
aware of that. Try and finish this
set. | 1:06:22 | 1:06:32 | |
He's in the pocket. Well played.
He's in the pocket. That's all he | 1:06:38 | 1:06:43
had to do. I can't see those three
going just the way they're sitting. | 1:06:43 | 1:06:53
He will probably say there is a draw
there, David. It is possible to draw | 1:06:53 | 1:06:56
the shot. The driving shot wasn't
secure enough to take all three | 1:06:56 | 1:07:02
bowls out. So, back to the draw.
This looks a little bit under. Line | 1:07:02 | 1:07:12
and weight. Oh dear, that's not like
you at all. | 1:07:12 | 1:07:23
A A good position here. They have
got everything covered, haven't | 1:07:25 | 1:07:28
they? Every green bowl has a value
there. It really does. The chat here | 1:07:28 | 1:07:34
is about do I want to widen this any
more than it is? That's a difficult | 1:07:34 | 1:07:39
one. You can play a really good bowl
and give Jamie a wider target, but | 1:07:39 | 1:07:46
he maybe tempted to leave a bowl in
the drawing line. Well, if he drops | 1:07:46 | 1:07:51
one a foot short, that would be
good. Yes. Nothing side-on. You | 1:07:51 | 1:07:56
don't want to widen the target.
Decided to go the other side just in | 1:07:56 | 1:08:01
case somehow or other the jack ends
up over with the two reds. I can't | 1:08:01 | 1:08:05
see it ending up there. No, I think
what he is saying to Jamie, I'm not | 1:08:05 | 1:08:09
sure if you have got the feel of the
rink at the moment, you're not | 1:08:09 | 1:08:12
drawing that well so I'm going to
leave you the draw rather than play | 1:08:12 | 1:08:16
the weighted bowl. So he needs a big
one here Jamie Chestney. He needs to | 1:08:16 | 1:08:23
find a really good bowl. | 1:08:23 | 1:08:34
Mark has been saying too much. So it
must be close in terms of the line. | 1:08:37 | 1:08:41
Has he got the weight though? That's
the important bit now. Not quite. | 1:08:41 | 1:08:47
Probably second shot though.
APPLAUSE | 1:08:47 | 1:08:50
It was a big try, wasn't it? A good
effort. | 1:08:50 | 1:08:56
Two or three more inches and he gets
the shot. I think I saw Nicky | 1:08:56 | 1:09:02
indicating, it was probably just the
one... We have to bear in mind these | 1:09:02 | 1:09:12
guys know each other so well.
They're international colleagues. | 1:09:12 | 1:09:22
In previous matches Jamie Chestney
was drawing them in like sweeties | 1:09:38 | 1:09:42
really in situations like that.
That's well in for second shot. Just | 1:09:42 | 1:09:50
playing as well today. But still in
touch. | 1:09:50 | 1:10:04
A tough one. Three shots. You'd
expect Harlow and Brett with their | 1:10:07 | 1:10:12
background experience to be able to
see this set out, but anything can | 1:10:12 | 1:10:16
happen in sport and bowls is
unpredictable at times, isn't it? | 1:10:16 | 1:10:22
Well, it is no different to any
other sport in many ways. It's very | 1:10:22 | 1:10:27
hard to call a result. | 1:10:27 | 1:10:36
hard to call a result. Ease down.
Great start. Well played. Well done. | 1:10:38 | 1:10:42
It's a good start when you're three
ahead. | 1:10:42 | 1:10:52
He's calling this. He wants it right
to the jack or the red bowl at the | 1:11:26 | 1:11:30
very least. | 1:11:30 | 1:11:35
I think when you're trying to score
multiples in a game like this where | 1:11:44 | 1:11:50
you've got two players and Greg can
drive well and it is very hard toe | 1:11:50 | 1:11:57
score any more than one or two shots
in an end. | 1:11:57 | 1:12:09
Just needs to ben back the centre. | 1:12:16 | 1:12:22
Ideal for Mark Dawes if he can get
in and send the red bowl round. | 1:12:30 | 1:12:35
Where it is at the moment, you would
expect Nicky to get in there. A wide | 1:12:35 | 1:12:39
target. It's a good place. It gives
Jamie a chance. | 1:12:39 | 1:12:54
Jamie a chance. The shot for Nicky
is to draw in as Greg was saying. | 1:12:54 | 1:12:58
Just pull the jack yourself and try
and do the shot before Jamie | 1:12:58 | 1:13:04
Chestney gets an opportunity. | 1:13:04 | 1:13:10
An opportunity here. Turn the jack
round the corner. | 1:13:19 | 1:13:32
John Jamie is looking for this big
bowl to get him going. If he gets | 1:13:33 | 1:13:38
the jack solid, he's good. That's
pretty good. A little bit unlucky, | 1:13:38 | 1:13:44
John. If he bounced it to his own
bowl, it would be fine, but it has | 1:13:44 | 1:13:49
come out into the open, that's
unlucky. But at least he was | 1:13:49 | 1:13:53
reaching on that occasion. This is a
big delivery for Nick. You wouldn't | 1:13:53 | 1:13:57
want to miss with this. | 1:13:57 | 1:14:03
want to miss with this. Well, Greg
is not calling it so there is | 1:14:03 | 1:14:07
something wrong. Probably third
shot. Now then there, is a real | 1:14:07 | 1:14:12
chance for Jamie to put some
pressure on. | 1:14:12 | 1:14:21
pressure on. Nick will adjust. There
is no doubt about that. So this has | 1:14:21 | 1:14:25
to be really close. He's calling it.
He's calling it just to make three. | 1:14:25 | 1:14:37
Well, it's in, but, Nick wasting a
moment's time. There is no | 1:14:39 | 1:14:43
discussion about this shot. Just get
down there and draw close. Just felt | 1:14:43 | 1:14:48
that Jamie needed to be a little bit
closer with that bowl to add the | 1:14:48 | 1:14:53
pressure. | 1:14:53 | 1:15:02
Waiting on the call from Greg. He
has well overplayed it. Oh man, this | 1:15:05 | 1:15:17
is a chance for the set. You could
never ever have called that. No, | 1:15:17 | 1:15:21
they haven't played a great end. | 1:15:21 | 1:15:28
they haven't played a great end. To
be fair to Mark and Jamie, they | 1:15:28 | 1:15:30
would have been thinking if we get a
three to draw the set we'll be | 1:15:30 | 1:15:34
stealing a bit of it, but to have
the opportunity to actually win the | 1:15:34 | 1:15:39
set, goodness me. The problem
started really three bowls out of | 1:15:39 | 1:15:43
the first four with Nicky and Greg,
you could see them down the green. | 1:15:43 | 1:15:48
Once the jack was pulled, they were
out of the game. What an | 1:15:48 | 1:15:53
opportunity, Jamie Chestney. There
is only one thing he has to make | 1:15:53 | 1:15:57
sure of here and that is, he has to
be on the slightly wider side. He | 1:15:57 | 1:16:00
doesn't want to move the jack. Well,
he's good if he has got the weight. | 1:16:00 | 1:16:06
He has to have good weight though.
Is he up? | 1:16:06 | 1:16:10
Oh, I'm not sure. Ah, I'm not sure.
Goodness me! Oh, he's not. He hasn't | 1:16:10 | 1:16:17
made it. That's three. Well, even
throwing it outen the high line and | 1:16:17 | 1:16:25
letting it come back John and play
the safe line which he appeared to | 1:16:25 | 1:16:29
have. Oh my goodness me. What an
end. | 1:16:29 | 1:16:38 | |
end. Joy and disappointment. You
pick it. You're playing well. | 1:16:40 | 1:16:52
pick it. You're playing well. That
was just unbelievable to be truthful | 1:16:52 | 1:16:54
with you. First of all, Nicky
missing it and then Jamie having, | 1:16:54 | 1:16:59
you know, it's... It was a big
opportunity to go a set in front. | 1:16:59 | 1:17:09
Well, the chances are we're | 1:17:09 | 1:17:15
Well, the chances are we're going --
we're going to have a winner in the | 1:17:16 | 1:17:19
second set. You're putting your neck
out there. It is a rare occurrence | 1:17:19 | 1:17:24
so I think I'm on a pretty good
wicket on this one! A better wicket | 1:17:24 | 1:17:30
than what Swansea will be tonight. | 1:17:30 | 1:17:41
All that effort and you're thinking
if they had stolen that set it would | 1:17:47 | 1:17:54
have been an amazing result. If they
sneaked it, it was probably against | 1:17:54 | 1:17:59
the run of play. Mark played very
well. Nicky turned over a lot of the | 1:17:59 | 1:18:03
early ends in that set. You could
argue, I suppose, that 6-6 was a | 1:18:03 | 1:18:08
pretty fair result with the bowling,
but what an opportunity. Certainly | 1:18:08 | 1:18:13
based on Mark's play. | 1:18:13 | 1:18:19
based on Mark's play. He has edged
Greg, but in the end it was Nicky | 1:18:19 | 1:18:23
missing the two bowls. But it was a
good set. Very interesting stuff | 1:18:23 | 1:18:29
with some brilliant play. | 1:18:29 | 1:18:40
Just tuck tucked it in. | 1:19:05 | 1:19:14
Well, a good chance here for Greg
because anything wide and heavy will | 1:19:26 | 1:19:30
pick up the other red. If it gets
into the inside, a treble. I don't | 1:19:30 | 1:19:40
think you'll draw this. | 1:19:40 | 1:19:49
think you'll draw this. Hit it well
-- hitting it well. That will go on | 1:19:49 | 1:19:54
to the respot position. Everything
is cleared off the rink. Very good | 1:19:54 | 1:19:59
at that shot. | 1:19:59 | 1:20:09
Really good, mate. Well done. Respot
again. | 1:20:32 | 1:20:43
A decent line this time. It is all
about weight. It looks like it's | 1:20:44 | 1:20:49
chucking a little bit. Just threw
it. That's not a bad place to be. It | 1:20:49 | 1:20:55
has been dropping short in the last
few ends. So he would be happy | 1:20:55 | 1:21:02
enough. And that's been playing well
to the off set jack. | 1:21:02 | 1:21:15
to the off set jack. It is a better
shot. He has played really well, | 1:21:15 | 1:21:19
Nick. The only failure was at the
last end of the first set. Two loose | 1:21:19 | 1:21:24
deliveries. Other than that he has
been very good. More or less the | 1:21:24 | 1:21:31
same bowl for Jamie. | 1:21:31 | 1:21:38
same bowl for Jamie. He's in the
area. He needs an edge to straighten | 1:21:38 | 1:21:42
him up from the front one. A good
second. Offers up a chance from the | 1:21:42 | 1:21:49
plant.
He is still talking about the last | 1:21:49 | 1:21:55
end. You can see it in his face. He
is struggling a bit with his game. | 1:21:55 | 1:22:06
Words of enurgement from Mark Dawes
-- encouragement from Mark Dawes. | 1:22:06 | 1:22:14
Well, it's not terrible. It's a
good, bad one. Takes that plant | 1:22:14 | 1:22:18
away. Yes. Good bad ones as we say
in this sport because he didn't get | 1:22:18 | 1:22:24
anywhere near what he was wanting,
but he has blocked the shot that | 1:22:24 | 1:22:28
John McCain which would have been
playing. I wonder is it anything | 1:22:28 | 1:22:33
across the rink on the other side,
David? I can't see from this angle. | 1:22:33 | 1:22:45
Well, what he's looking at, I think,
really is the possibility of getting | 1:22:45 | 1:22:48
this into that. Now, if he does that
then you're talking about that bowl | 1:22:48 | 1:22:54
disappearing, this bowl disappearing
and hopefully the front one will | 1:22:54 | 1:22:58
move as well and if that happens,
then we've got the potential of this | 1:22:58 | 1:23:04
bowl here becoming the key bowl. | 1:23:04 | 1:23:11
bowl here becoming the key bowl. The
alternative if he really wants to | 1:23:12 | 1:23:14
play it is to draw in there and not
particularly easy o do, the front | 1:23:14 | 1:23:20
bowl is in the way. There is nothing
easy about this. The running bowl is | 1:23:20 | 1:23:28
a bit speculative, you're hoping to
get the right direction. The fore | 1:23:28 | 1:23:31
hand draw. It was just a foot in his
last one, as you say, John. He's | 1:23:31 | 1:23:38
playing a timing shot. Let's see
what happens. Hasn't got the running | 1:23:38 | 1:23:43
to do a lot of damage on the pace.
He must have been able to see an | 1:23:43 | 1:23:52
inch of that on the backhand, I
think. It was a low percentage shot, | 1:23:52 | 1:23:58
but he probably felt it was
worthwhile. | 1:23:58 | 1:24:07
worthwhile. An interesting end. | 1:24:07 | 1:24:13
The pairs are always well supported. | 1:24:20 | 1:24:27
The players have microphones so
you're getting a lot of the | 1:24:39 | 1:24:43
conversations. | 1:24:43 | 1:24:48
conversations. Quite noticeable with
Greg's bowls, using the green here. | 1:24:49 | 1:24:53
He doesn't bend as much of his red
set, David. For some strange reasons | 1:24:53 | 1:24:58
it seems to be the case. For most of
the greens, that's according to the | 1:24:58 | 1:25:02
players, and certainly I've noticed
it in years gone past as well that | 1:25:02 | 1:25:08
the greens don't pull back as much.
The manufacturers can't give a | 1:25:08 | 1:25:11
reason for it. They are all made on
the same machine and same weight. | 1:25:11 | 1:25:16
You order two bowls exactly the same
in terms of size, weight and grips | 1:25:16 | 1:25:20
and all of that and they dplairchly
between a red and a green. | 1:25:20 | 1:25:33
Pretty good again.
Very good lead in again from Mark | 1:25:49 | 1:25:56
Dawes. He has done a very good job
in this pairs final, Mark Dawes. A | 1:25:56 | 1:26:03
good combination him and Jamie. | 1:26:03 | 1:26:10
A good recovery. | 1:26:21 | 1:26:27
APPLAUSE | 1:26:27 | 1:26:31
It's going to be a hard one to get
out as well. | 1:26:31 | 1:26:36
You get the plant. I mean your back
one should lock on that one. Get the | 1:26:36 | 1:26:40
jack and try and open it up a bit.
I'm not convinced that that plant | 1:26:40 | 1:26:45
will actually take the green one out
of the head completely. Might find | 1:26:45 | 1:26:50
out here. The jack. It's good. He
opened it up. A good strike. He is | 1:26:50 | 1:27:01
playing a good all-round game, Mark,
when he needs to, he hits the | 1:27:01 | 1:27:04
strike. He is drawing well as well.
So it gives the skip a chance. | 1:27:04 | 1:27:19
So it gives the skip a chance. He
could have auditioned for Harry | 1:27:19 | 1:27:22
Potter! There wouldn't have been
much in it, I would have thought, | 1:27:22 | 1:27:27
many years ago!
Of course, we do have a Harry Potter | 1:27:27 | 1:27:36
in real life here.
John Potter! | 1:27:36 | 1:27:49
His son, is called Harry. Very good.
He has played this well. He has. He | 1:27:51 | 1:27:59
has nailed that one. That's more
like Jamie Chestney. That's what | 1:27:59 | 1:28:04
we're used to from Jamie. There is
Mrs Potter. Resplendent in floral on | 1:28:04 | 1:28:12
cream, I think, that's what that is
called. Floral on cream. I will take | 1:28:12 | 1:28:17
it from you. You're more up on
women's fashion. No choice. No | 1:28:17 | 1:28:23
choice.
Well, again that's what you expect | 1:28:23 | 1:28:31
and not only that, but the little
touch on the jack is a bonus. John | 1:28:31 | 1:28:36
has made a double out of it. | 1:28:36 | 1:28:47
It probably kicked out a little bit,
but that's to be expected. | 1:28:52 | 1:28:58
The advantage of the three bowls as
well, John, you get an awful lot | 1:28:58 | 1:29:02
more of the attacking play. Yes, I
think if he's going for the spot | 1:29:02 | 1:29:11
this position, he doesn't need to
widen the target. | 1:29:11 | 1:29:18
That's OK. That's very good.
He couldn't have played that better. | 1:29:18 | 1:29:25
APPLAUSE
Well, that's right on it, isn't it? | 1:29:25 | 1:29:34
So, green bowl on to green bowl or
jack clean? Can't be tight. He | 1:29:46 | 1:29:52
doesn't want his own bowl. I did see
Greg looking at the other two bowls | 1:29:52 | 1:29:56
to see who is lying fourth and
fifth. Well, back into it. Well, he | 1:29:56 | 1:30:05
has reduced it to one.
I couldn't really see the jack going | 1:30:05 | 1:30:09
there. | 1:30:09 | 1:30:14
Not only did it go the wrong side,
it went up the Queen as well. | 1:30:19 | 1:30:27
I don't think that was a bad result.
He'd been in a bit of trouble there. | 1:30:27 | 1:30:36
If you can't get the shot in a
straightforward way and there are | 1:30:50 | 1:30:54
things against you, you give a
chance to reduce the damage, get it | 1:30:54 | 1:30:57
down to a single. Taking bowls out,
moving jacks around... | 1:30:57 | 1:31:09
That is it for you. The thing about
match craft is, it doesn't go ton | 1:31:12 | 1:31:17
the score sheet, it's just something
that is inherent in the top players | 1:31:17 | 1:31:23
that the match craft comes into play
and they keep it tight. | 1:31:23 | 1:31:28
There's been one treble and one
double in the match so far. That's | 1:31:28 | 1:31:36
not by chance, just the fact the
players are working their way around | 1:31:36 | 1:31:40
the game. | 1:31:40 | 1:31:41
Two red bowls in good position
there. | 1:32:15 | 1:32:22
You'd expect Mark to draw this. | 1:32:38 | 1:32:49
Over-adjusted. In terms of the mat,
that's probably one of the loosest | 1:32:49 | 1:32:54
we've had. Yes, the standard has
been really good. | 1:32:54 | 1:33:05
Just playing the forehand slipping
inside the green bowl. | 1:33:37 | 1:33:45
Overplayed it. | 1:33:45 | 1:33:52
These players for many years have
been in the same clubs so they know | 1:33:55 | 1:33:59
each other very well. Keep it coming
forward. Well played. I think | 1:33:59 | 1:34:08
that'll make his mind up now. He's a
bit unlucky and he knows it. | 1:34:08 | 1:34:14
Jamie could well attack this. | 1:34:22 | 1:34:24
Down the back hand or forehand. It's
tight on the back hand. Either way, | 1:34:36 | 1:34:40
the angle is good to come off.
Forehand more of the jack to aim | 1:34:40 | 1:34:43
for. No options on the forehand.
Very close with this. Oh! | 1:34:43 | 1:34:51
Unbelievable. | 1:34:51 | 1:34:56
Unbelievable. I think that got an
ooh and an ah from the crowd. | 1:34:56 | 1:35:05
Wasting absolutely no time there but
a thin edge would have been very | 1:35:05 | 1:35:08
good indeed. That's the back covered
and you can do no more than that. I | 1:35:08 | 1:35:13
think he'll go again. Oh, he has to. | 1:35:13 | 1:35:20
Look at the positions. Missed the
inside. You would never be able to | 1:35:20 | 1:35:25
do that if you tried it. No. A
little less weight he would have had | 1:35:25 | 1:35:30
the stwining and that would have
brought him on to the red bowl and | 1:35:30 | 1:35:34
you don't want that either. He has
to play it again. Desperately | 1:35:34 | 1:35:41
unlucky, unless he gets his own bowl
face on. | 1:35:41 | 1:35:50
Going quicker. A chance again. Has
he gone past? He has. Really good | 1:35:52 | 1:35:57
drive.
APPLAUSE. | 1:35:57 | 1:36:00
I think he was hoping to get the
green bowl on the way through. | 1:36:03 | 1:36:10
That would have gone down like an
absolute rocket. Good drive. Good | 1:36:14 | 1:36:19
shot, he'll take that. That's a
single. | 1:36:19 | 1:36:28
Get your feet off that, Robert, you
wouldn't do that at home! | 1:36:46 | 1:36:55
You have the opportunity to chill
with coffee and things out there. | 1:36:55 | 1:37:08
I'll bring in biscuits tomorrow. I'm
off them. Christmas did a lot of | 1:37:11 | 1:37:17
damage. | 1:37:17 | 1:37:18
Correction needed. | 1:37:48 | 1:37:52
Just a little bit but not that much.
Still needs to drop two more feet. | 1:37:52 | 1:38:04
Good position, covers the reds. Life
is amazing sometimes. You mention a | 1:38:17 | 1:38:23
coffee and suddenly, magically, it
appears. | 1:38:23 | 1:38:32
Needs to hurry. Stays up. | 1:39:04 | 1:39:12
Quite a journey for Nick from where
he was living at the time, to two to | 1:39:31 | 1:39:35
his club. Very successful though.
Won a lot of national titles | 1:39:35 | 1:39:40
together, these two. Now, can you
get the ball there? His own bowl's | 1:39:40 | 1:39:47
ran into a good position. Green bowl
would have been perfect. But the | 1:39:47 | 1:39:51
jack is good. Playing with that kind
of controlled weight gets it moving | 1:39:51 | 1:39:56
on it. Very good delivery. | 1:39:56 | 1:39:59
Needs an edge. | 1:40:05 | 1:40:11
Dropped in as well! Big bonus.
Played it well again. Good reach in | 1:40:11 | 1:40:18
weight. | 1:40:18 | 1:40:27
weight. Any movement on the jack is
good. Big effort as well. Very close | 1:40:28 | 1:40:33
isn't he? Gets a jack. How unlucky
is that? ! An inch either ways, it | 1:40:33 | 1:40:44
was good value for three. Just past
the red bowls is where you're | 1:40:44 | 1:40:52
headed, mate. | 1:40:52 | 1:40:59
You can hear Greg saying he wants to
bowl past. | 1:41:05 | 1:41:11
Has to play it with a very
controlled weight now to get the | 1:41:11 | 1:41:14
shot. Yes. He'll still be playing
into that. Really what he wants is | 1:41:14 | 1:41:20
the movement of jack into about that
position. If it gets a bit harder, | 1:41:20 | 1:41:24
it's a difficulty, because it brings
the two green bowls into play. I | 1:41:24 | 1:41:29
think he's got no choice, he has to
play it. I think he's playing the | 1:41:29 | 1:41:33
same bowl as the last delivery, he's
going to be close. Same line. Same | 1:41:33 | 1:41:37
weight. | 1:41:37 | 1:41:40
There's something not quite the
same. | 1:41:45 | 1:41:53 | |
I don't see any value in going
anywhere near that. | 1:41:55 | 1:42:04
He can't possibly be... No, he's
not. | 1:42:12 | 1:42:16 | |
It was never going to be a shot to
be played. It wasn't the time to try | 1:42:25 | 1:42:31
to be a hero. | 1:42:31 | 1:42:32
3-1 looks pretty good, I would say. | 1:42:35 | 1:42:39
It's that type of game. You don't
want to give anything away. It's | 1:42:39 | 1:42:44
going to be close. At the moment,
they've got the edge. Short of jack | 1:42:44 | 1:42:51
length, 25 metres, an interesting
change. | 1:42:51 | 1:42:58
Trying to shake Mark Dawes off the
length and line. That's been the | 1:43:07 | 1:43:11
main thing. Greg's been playing
well, but Mark's just been getting | 1:43:11 | 1:43:16
inside. | 1:43:16 | 1:43:25
APPLAUSE. | 1:43:29 | 1:43:37
APPLAUSE. | 1:44:08 | 1:44:10
Trying to back hand very well.
Trying to make the adjustment. | 1:44:21 | 1:44:31
Forehand runner will be left to Nick
if he doesn't get it. | 1:44:32 | 1:44:37
Just didn't get back. Not trouping
quite as well for him on his back | 1:44:40 | 1:44:44
handers as his red bowls. And and
it's a shorter jack. It is. Gets a | 1:44:44 | 1:44:50
big turn. | 1:44:50 | 1:44:52
Mark could really make this
difficult. | 1:44:57 | 1:45:04
That is the red, the same
manufacturer and model as the green, | 1:45:07 | 1:45:11
just dipping a little bit more.
There are a lot of things that can | 1:45:11 | 1:45:19
affect the delivery. Always a good
talking point. | 1:45:19 | 1:45:27
Wasting no time on the forehand
runner. Clear the reds. He's getting | 1:45:30 | 1:45:37
the run-through, is he? Red bowl
just dropped in time. He's cleared | 1:45:37 | 1:45:44
the way. | 1:45:44 | 1:45:50
Needs to tighten the bowls up
because they will disappear. Needs | 1:45:52 | 1:45:57
to get in beside them. | 1:45:57 | 1:46:00
Not bad. Going again, looking for
the split. Oh! A horrible result. | 1:46:05 | 1:46:22
How on earth... Looked perfect on
the split. Certainly did. Looked to | 1:46:22 | 1:46:28
get the two Reds away. | 1:46:28 | 1:46:30
Nicky will want to turn his mic off
and air his thoughts on that, I'm | 1:46:32 | 1:46:36
sure. Can't be happy with that one.
It was a real poor result. | 1:46:36 | 1:46:46
He's looking for a really good front
bowl. | 1:46:58 | 1:47:01 | |
Not bad. He's going to have to draw
this. Yes, the only thing you could | 1:47:03 | 1:47:09
say is, there's room to draw it in
favour for Jamie, he's played two | 1:47:09 | 1:47:14
running bowls. That's the only thing
that'll put a doubt in his mained | 1:47:14 | 1:47:18
but he'll fancy getting close with
this -- in his mind. | 1:47:18 | 1:47:24
Two of them not particularly close.
You would expect to draw probably | 1:47:33 | 1:47:39
third... Getting close to second you
are going to be very close to the | 1:47:39 | 1:47:42
shot. Not getting much from Greg on
this one. He's missed it. That's | 1:47:42 | 1:47:51
going to be a big score, the biggest
score of the match. | 1:47:51 | 1:47:59
score of the match. Can't say
anything about it. Looks like a five | 1:47:59 | 1:48:02
coming up here. | 1:48:02 | 1:48:11
coming up here. The last time he had
a Hans to draw for four, he missed | 1:48:11 | 1:48:15
it. | 1:48:15 | 1:48:17 | |
There is a lot of room here, I fancy
him to do this. It's all about | 1:48:17 | 1:48:26
getting within a yard. Doesn't want
to move the jack. | 1:48:26 | 1:48:31
APPLAUSE.
Massive end. Don't see too many of | 1:48:33 | 1:48:42
tho pairs. Three shots in it. Just
means the set is not dead but it's | 1:48:42 | 1:48:55
certainly in favour now. Turned the
match upside down really. It was so | 1:48:55 | 1:49:03
close up until then. So much damage
done to Greg and Nick here. Still | 1:49:03 | 1:49:17
four ends to go. Talking about three
shots. You know, it's still doable, | 1:49:17 | 1:49:22
just remember the last time. Got
three to go level. Won the set. | 1:49:22 | 1:49:30
Jamie would have traded that last
bowl. | 1:49:30 | 1:49:42 | |
Reply from Greg. They can afford to
reach it then. Won't do too much | 1:50:02 | 1:50:07
damage. This is the time now for
Chestney. If they can put the | 1:50:07 | 1:50:15
pressure on, they'll be in a very
strong position. That is very good | 1:50:15 | 1:50:19
as well. I'll be well pleased with
that. | 1:50:19 | 1:50:28 | |
Asking a few questions of Greg
Harlow. Really trying hard. Doesn't | 1:50:41 | 1:50:47
want to be solid. | 1:50:47 | 1:50:55
Stephen fry just mentioned he's
enjoying the bowls. We now you're a | 1:51:08 | 1:51:13
fan. | 1:51:13 | 1:51:18 | |
fan. The skill level is very, very
high. | 1:51:20 | 1:51:29 | |
# Bbcbowls - you never know who is
watching. | 1:51:40 | 1:51:47
Nick is looking to try to change the
shape of this head. At the moment, | 1:51:48 | 1:51:53
it's in favour of the red bowls. If
he gets on to the back red with this | 1:51:53 | 1:51:59
one, Greg has got a chance. | 1:51:59 | 1:52:03
Changed that completely. Really good
bowl. | 1:52:07 | 1:52:11 | |
Always liked coaching the
celebrities. Some years ago we had | 1:52:14 | 1:52:17
the hole in the wall guy back in
Northern Ireland, I coached him for | 1:52:17 | 1:52:21
years, we played an exhibition game.
We'll get Stephen down to coach with | 1:52:21 | 1:52:25
him. | 1:52:25 | 1:52:35 | |
Perfect bowl to drop off on to the
green and fall in. Not a lot of room | 1:52:43 | 1:52:48
to spare. Very close. | 1:52:48 | 1:52:59
Signal to Nicky, the little turn of
the jack. | 1:53:04 | 1:53:11
Good effort. Didn't want to be
short. Got into a good position | 1:53:27 | 1:53:33
there. | 1:53:33 | 1:53:39
there. This is a very narrow target. | 1:53:39 | 1:53:50
Still is possible to turn that red
away. Good weight though. | 1:53:58 | 1:54:09
We got a glimpse there of the face
of Nicky Brett. | 1:54:09 | 1:54:16
Front bowl. That might give him
something. It's very narrow. | 1:54:20 | 1:54:25
The plan is not good because the red
bowl at the end of the rink... | 1:54:29 | 1:54:35
It's a very good position. That
plant isn't very good at all. I | 1:54:35 | 1:54:41
wonder what he's looking at is that.
Having said that, where the danger | 1:54:41 | 1:54:45
is, is over this direction here.
That jack goes back, they've got the | 1:54:45 | 1:54:50
green bowls coming into play. So,
you know, the front plant moves the | 1:54:50 | 1:54:55
jack, it's just how far it goes.
Still a shot down the forehand on | 1:54:55 | 1:55:00
the draw. Playing what he did
before, trying to get to that green. | 1:55:00 | 1:55:03
It's not widened in the target on
the back hand. Leaving Nicky very | 1:55:03 | 1:55:08
little. Line's good again. Line's
very good with this. Gets the bend. | 1:55:08 | 1:55:17
Still just hanging off, isn't it.
Pretty good though. To be honest, | 1:55:17 | 1:55:24
even if he gets on to the front, the
jack will move, it's just how far it | 1:55:24 | 1:55:30
moves but it moves to there, he gets
a double. He may have to use a bit | 1:55:30 | 1:55:33
of weight and the red bowl at 5
o'clock is the vital bowl and if | 1:55:33 | 1:55:38
there's too much weight. It's just
drawing it, David. You can see the | 1:55:38 | 1:55:43
reasons why. Further, mate. Greg is
calling it. He thinks it's closer. | 1:55:43 | 1:55:50
Big effort, big effort! Well played!
Great bowl. Marvellous bowl. | 1:55:50 | 1:55:58
APPLAUSE.
A fantastic bowl under that sort of | 1:55:58 | 1:56:06
pressure. | 1:56:06 | 1:56:12
6-4. | 1:56:12 | 1:56:17 | |
Easy to say there's a dramatic
difference from 7-3. Had it been | 1:56:17 | 1:56:23
7-3, they'd be chasing the match but
now, two shots behind, three ends to | 1:56:23 | 1:56:26
go. Very doable. | 1:56:26 | 1:56:34
APPLAUSE. | 1:56:51 | 1:56:55
Concentration On Mark Dawes face.
He's very good at that. Doesn't | 1:57:05 | 1:57:15
wander. | 1:57:15 | 1:57:20
Ten inches away. Silence.
Expectations are high. It's tough | 1:57:39 | 1:57:45
out there, it really is. Don't get a
clap for anything other than a | 1:57:45 | 1:57:50
toucher. | 1:57:50 | 1:57:59
Greg would really like to get to the
green bowls. There are a thousand | 1:58:03 | 1:58:09
people out there. No-one can decide
to clap one bowl a foot away. | 1:58:09 | 1:58:17
APPLAUSE.
Pretty good that. That's good. | 1:58:17 | 1:58:25
Probably one of Greg's best ends.
It's the right time to do it. | 1:58:25 | 1:58:35
Will he get back. Needs to bend very
quickly. It's just not bending for | 1:58:36 | 1:58:40
him. You can see it. He thought that
was coming in at one stage and | 1:58:40 | 1:58:47
Mark's also confused. | 1:58:47 | 1:58:54
It's up to you. | 1:58:56 | 1:59:03
Forehand draw puts the bowl into
position, the back hand draw turns | 1:59:03 | 1:59:07
the jack around the corner and
really gives Jamie a lot of trouble. | 1:59:07 | 1:59:14
He doesn't want to leave him with
that shot. Gets the movement on the | 1:59:14 | 1:59:18
jack. | 1:59:18 | 1:59:20 | |
Got down, the red's going to fall.
That's not where the issue is, but | 1:59:28 | 1:59:32
it's a big shoulder. It just means
now Jamie can afford to play with | 1:59:32 | 1:59:36
weight. Instead of just drawing, he
can play into this. | 1:59:36 | 1:59:46
Will he use the shoulder the right
way? Yes, he has. Opened it up. | 1:59:47 | 1:59:51
Still one down. A bit unlucky with
that bowl following through but he's | 1:59:51 | 1:59:57
opened it up. It's about that little
bit in front... | 1:59:57 | 2:00:03
Only problem he's had is, Nick's
been very good on the offset jack. | 2:00:05 | 2:00:11
He certainly has, throughout the
match. Good line again. | 2:00:11 | 2:00:20
match. Good line again. It's not
going to help in terms of drying to | 2:00:20 | 2:00:23
draw the shot. | 2:00:23 | 2:00:29
You have got to picture this on the
mat. You have got to play a draw and | 2:00:37 | 2:00:41
hope you miss on the inside. Well
the trouble is you get on to the | 2:00:41 | 2:00:49
green bowl and you're not doing
anything with it. Yeah, exactly. He | 2:00:49 | 2:00:54
has also fallen away too. That was
always going to be a problem, but | 2:00:54 | 2:00:57
there was no other way in. So... The
only thing I would say, the plus | 2:00:57 | 2:01:01
point is he moved those two green
bowls for the target. He has got | 2:01:01 | 2:01:05
options if he wants to attack those.
He has got the split to take the two | 2:01:05 | 2:01:11
bowls out and it is still a problem
for Nick because he needs another | 2:01:11 | 2:01:14
bowl in. | 2:01:14 | 2:01:22
bowl in. You are really looking at
it, it is something, John, if he | 2:01:22 | 2:01:26
could make the draw and get it into
this sort of position, that's what | 2:01:26 | 2:01:30
he is looking for. He can drop in
that side of it. He needs something | 2:01:30 | 2:01:36
hidden in this area and the ideal
position is to get one in there and | 2:01:36 | 2:01:41
that's hidden. No worries. Take the
two bowls out and you're still going | 2:01:41 | 2:01:46
to get the shot. It is coming away
from the two greens. On the other | 2:01:46 | 2:01:50
side of the jack, it would be away
from those greens and it would be a | 2:01:50 | 2:01:55
good bowl. The difficulty is that,
you know, whenever you look at these | 2:01:55 | 2:02:00
bowls here, the two green ones, this
one in particular, because that one | 2:02:00 | 2:02:06
is a problem really for Jamie
because he can't get the line into | 2:02:06 | 2:02:09
the jack on the draw. So that bowl
there is a key bowl in this end. | 2:02:09 | 2:02:22
Nicky has decided. Backhand. Oh,
this will be interesting. He is | 2:02:44 | 2:02:51
coming around to a deep position. He
is taking a risk on this. What he's | 2:02:51 | 2:02:56
really saying is, if you take those
two bowls out, I'm prepared to lose | 2:02:56 | 2:03:03
the shots, but if you get the jack,
I've got it covered. That's a very | 2:03:03 | 2:03:11
risky policy, John, because you
can't cover both with one bowl. It's | 2:03:11 | 2:03:14
impossible. If he gets this
absolutely plum, there is a chance. | 2:03:14 | 2:03:20
It is a split on the greens, isn't
it? Gets the splits on the green | 2:03:20 | 2:03:25
then he's in business.
It is what he's looking for. The | 2:03:25 | 2:03:30
green bowl goes. The green bowl goes
and it brings all those red ones | 2:03:30 | 2:03:35
into play. Oh, he's playing it very
controlled. Goodness me, Jim, are | 2:03:35 | 2:03:44
you trying to draw it? He is not
trying to draw it. He's still | 2:03:44 | 2:03:47
looking for the split.
Well, I don't know, John, I think he | 2:03:47 | 2:03:53
was taking a chance. There was only
one green bowl there and he had | 2:03:53 | 2:03:57
what, three thirds? He hit the
target, but he didn't have enough | 2:03:57 | 2:04:01
weight to do the damage.
Three-thirds with one bowl against, | 2:04:01 | 2:04:05
you know, even if he had taken the
two bowls out and cleaned his own | 2:04:05 | 2:04:09
close one out, he was still scoring
two. Why on earth did he use that | 2:04:09 | 2:04:16
weight?
If he had got the bowl and run | 2:04:16 | 2:04:23
through, he would have got a single,
but I think that was a chance to win | 2:04:23 | 2:04:27
the match. I thought he might have
gone thicker at that. Sometimes you | 2:04:27 | 2:04:31
get a chance to win the match. If he
had taken that and had a real go at | 2:04:31 | 2:04:36
it and got it right, a chance of
three. He is sitting at 9-4 in front | 2:04:36 | 2:04:41
with two ends to go. He had it in
his pocket. As it is now, it is all | 2:04:41 | 2:04:46
to play for. Absolutely. | 2:04:46 | 2:04:56
to play for. Absolutely. Saying that
David, it is easier sitting up here | 2:04:56 | 2:04:59
in the box. You haven't got the
wrong shot yet! No, that's true, but | 2:04:59 | 2:05:03
you know, you get to see what the
percentages are John, and I think | 2:05:03 | 2:05:06
that was one of the more obvious
ones, but maybe they felt that the | 2:05:06 | 2:05:11
bowls just didn't sit right for it,
but it looked good. I think Nicky | 2:05:11 | 2:05:16
Brett would have played it. Let's
put it that way. A loose start. Both | 2:05:16 | 2:05:22
players need to be closer. Year
after year you see the key moments | 2:05:22 | 2:05:33
in a match and just occasionally you
have to take a risk to win a title. | 2:05:33 | 2:05:39
I thought it was up. He's better...
. They both prefer this fore hand, | 2:05:39 | 2:05:54
but the jack is more open in the
backhand. It has rarely been used | 2:05:54 | 2:05:59
though. Jamie is calling it to move.
APPLAUSE | 2:05:59 | 2:06:13
Either your green ones. Open it up. | 2:06:13 | 2:06:24
I'm not surprised, relying on Greg
to move the heavyweight ball to move | 2:06:29 | 2:06:33
the front ones. Looking for a good
result and that's pretty good | 2:06:33 | 2:06:37
because he has opened it right up.
That in from the spot. That's the | 2:06:37 | 2:06:41
benefit of having a lead that can
play those things and it has been a | 2:06:41 | 2:06:45
feature for both leads actually this
this match. They are both very | 2:06:45 | 2:06:50
capable, all-round players. This
isn't easy. | 2:06:50 | 2:07:00
APPLAUSE
That's narrowed down the jack. He | 2:07:04 | 2:07:07
can still get to a full jack, but
it's certainly not easy. I think at | 2:07:07 | 2:07:13
this stage in the game Nick will be
thinking to himself, "I can maybe | 2:07:13 | 2:07:17
get a close ball and then go chasing
it." | 2:07:17 | 2:07:24 | |
That's the first bowl for the draw. | 2:07:28 | 2:07:36
He has a good line. Yes.
Good second. That's what he wanted. | 2:07:36 | 2:07:51
That stays there, he might well
chasing with the next one. | 2:07:51 | 2:08:00
chasing with the next one. Oh John
McCain European Commission you're | 2:08:00 | 2:08:02
heavy. It's not bad though, David.
It's a good starter for him. It | 2:08:02 | 2:08:08
depends how brave you're feeling,
mate. Exactly. If he gets the edge | 2:08:08 | 2:08:12
of the jack on the respot, that's a
perfect bowl. Jack in the ditch or | 2:08:12 | 2:08:17
will bowl out. Bowl out is actually
OK. Or a good second. Oh. Edge of | 2:08:17 | 2:08:22
the jack, surely. Edge of the jack
is perfect. If you're going to | 2:08:22 | 2:08:27
gamble this is probably the one to
gamble with a second bowl. Yes, | 2:08:27 | 2:08:34
absolutely. I think he ends up with
a bowl six inches in front. | 2:08:34 | 2:08:45
LAUGHTER
Well, he must have said something | 2:08:45 | 2:08:47
there, because he knew it was tight.
I think Jamie has to go for this | 2:08:47 | 2:08:52
spot here. I tried to play it inside
and I turned. Well, you don't want | 2:08:52 | 2:08:58
to frame it. He's playing fore hand.
He can pass that green either side | 2:08:58 | 2:09:06
and he is probably better on the
outside. Yes, I think he is. Rather | 2:09:06 | 2:09:09
than the inside. He wants second
shot. That's his target. He doesn't | 2:09:09 | 2:09:13
want to frame the jack. He doesn't
want to get too close. | 2:09:13 | 2:09:21
APPLAUSE
It's not ideal because if Nick plays | 2:09:21 | 2:09:23
the same line he'll get off that
bowl. And that's the trouble. That | 2:09:23 | 2:09:28
needed to be on a leng. It needed to
be another foot heavier and that | 2:09:28 | 2:09:32
would have been a perfect bowl. As
it is, he's lying two, which is | 2:09:32 | 2:09:35
good. But no, it is not great in
terms of the way they're lying. The | 2:09:35 | 2:09:42
problem for Nicky is, the shot bowl,
he doesn't want to get the shot bowl | 2:09:42 | 2:09:46
clean into the jack otherwise it is
much over. Well, you know, what | 2:09:46 | 2:09:49
we're talking about John, I suppose,
is coming into there and then the | 2:09:49 | 2:09:53
potential of getting on to the jack.
The jack moves, if that, if he hits | 2:09:53 | 2:09:57
the bowl on that, the jack moves and
the jack goes into this position. | 2:09:57 | 2:10:00
What he doesn't want is the other
one, Dave, into the jack. If I gets | 2:10:00 | 2:10:05
- the difficulty is if he gets the
jack, as you say John, but if he | 2:10:05 | 2:10:10
gets into the bowl then well,
everything is, that's a match. | 2:10:10 | 2:10:14
That's over. The match has gone
because what will happen is that the | 2:10:14 | 2:10:17
jack will end up back in this
position and all these bowls and the | 2:10:17 | 2:10:22
reds will count. So... Jamie had
three meters, four meters to draw | 2:10:22 | 2:10:27
another. Well and he'll lie three.
That's the one he doesn't want. Yes. | 2:10:27 | 2:10:32
This has to be the jack really, I
think, or nothing. | 2:10:32 | 2:10:40
He's under it. He wants to stay away
now. Well, he has lost a two with | 2:10:41 | 2:10:48
one more to come. Three up into the
last end. | 2:10:48 | 2:10:53
The first set again. Yes. You
wouldn't bank on it, but he has a | 2:10:53 | 2:10:59
real chance to put this one in,
another bowl here. Just as well he | 2:10:59 | 2:11:03
didn't get his own bowl, that would
have been a shake hands job. This is | 2:11:03 | 2:11:08
a nothing to nothing for Jamie. A
nice quiet draw here and makes | 2:11:08 | 2:11:11
another one. Outside green bowl, he
has to be careful. Can't afford to | 2:11:11 | 2:11:19
touch T He will aplay this nice
weight, I think. He wants a wide | 2:11:19 | 2:11:24
line and just trickle in. He doesn't
want to hit the green bowl. It's OK | 2:11:24 | 2:11:29
if he's on the outside. He'll bend
back. Has he got a straightener? He | 2:11:29 | 2:11:33
has and he missed a chance. That
happened in the first set as well. | 2:11:33 | 2:11:38
The last bowl to win the match. I
think if he'd of drawn that, that | 2:11:38 | 2:11:42
would have been enough. As it is,
there is a possibility of a three. | 2:11:42 | 2:11:54
That's amazing, isn't it? Jamie last
bowl. Both times to really nail the | 2:11:54 | 2:12:00
game. But they are in a good
position. It is the world pairs | 2:12:00 | 2:12:06
final. Three up playing the last.
Take that any day. | 2:12:06 | 2:12:15
I think Jamie will be sitting there
thinking, "Oh my goodness me. I had | 2:12:24 | 2:12:30
to be careful." Four shots, really
hard to get them when you need them. | 2:12:30 | 2:12:43
Well, you can the difference with
the just the three. That's obvious | 2:12:45 | 2:12:49
because of the second set. They're
three up with the ends won. That's | 2:12:49 | 2:12:55
the difference, whenever the
Chestney Dawes combination have been | 2:12:55 | 2:13:00
scoring. It is caused by that three
in the last end of the first set and | 2:13:00 | 2:13:03
of course, that big five. A good
bowl by Greg. | 2:13:03 | 2:13:13
bowl by Greg. He has played over it,
but it is in the better position | 2:13:15 | 2:13:17
than being short. I'd stick with it.
Either side of the red. | 2:13:17 | 2:13:34
Hang around. Not with what weight he
doesn't. Oh dear, oh dear. It's OK | 2:13:43 | 2:13:51
in terms of they can get at it, but
Greg had a bit of weight on that | 2:13:51 | 2:13:55
one. It is unfortunate he doesn't
put that right behind the jack. | 2:13:55 | 2:14:00
Well, he's probably thinking to
himself, John, I don't want to be | 2:14:00 | 2:14:06
short. No. Mark, that's another bowl
in the head. Yes. | 2:14:06 | 2:14:14
APPLAUSE
He has played big game, hasn't he, | 2:14:14 | 2:14:17
he has been the star of the four,
really. He has been very consistent. | 2:14:17 | 2:14:23
You can see what Nicky is looking
for here, just to play on to the red | 2:14:23 | 2:14:27
bowls. He removed one bowl and the
other will stay, but it will give | 2:14:27 | 2:14:34
him a good position. It is
controlled weight so if he misses he | 2:14:34 | 2:14:39
stays on the green. Yes. Essential.
Miss. That's what he wanted because | 2:14:39 | 2:14:47
that gives him an option.
It depends what Jamie wants to do | 2:14:47 | 2:14:53
here, he can go deep here, but he's
taking a risk by leaving the head. | 2:14:53 | 2:14:58
He's forcing, he's really forcing
Nicky to play a brilliant bowl and | 2:14:58 | 2:15:05
one of his bowls looks like it is
completely locked in. | 2:15:05 | 2:15:16
Well, we have a little change there
just to get things out of the way. | 2:15:16 | 2:15:20
There we go. Settle down again. | 2:15:20 | 2:15:31
He's looking for the cover bowl and
wants to go deeper than this. Just | 2:15:41 | 2:15:45
deep, deep, deep. Not bad, but not
perfect. You have got to be quite | 2:15:45 | 2:15:51
positive, haven't you? Enough to get
on to the jack and all the way | 2:15:51 | 2:15:56
through. The two in the back. Bowl
on the jack is what he's looking | 2:15:56 | 2:16:02
for. The edge of the red, he might
scoot the two of them out. A good | 2:16:02 | 2:16:07
result.
APPLAUSE | 2:16:07 | 2:16:10
That's actually very good. I thought
that red bowl, the middle one was | 2:16:10 | 2:16:13
locked in. If you had hit it clean,
but ez hit the green bowl first. | 2:16:13 | 2:16:17
Goodness me, that's a very good
result. | 2:16:17 | 2:16:25
result. Now then Jamie. The pressure
is back on. | 2:16:25 | 2:16:31
The height looks decent. He has
played it well, I think. It was a | 2:16:31 | 2:16:37
good second. That was a critical
bit. Get a decent second in. | 2:16:37 | 2:16:43
APPLAUSE
That's that shot. There is a chance | 2:16:43 | 2:16:47
to play it through and stop. I
thought he would just draw it. I did | 2:16:47 | 2:16:51
as well. That's a tougher shot to
play through and stop. I think at | 2:16:51 | 2:16:56
this stage if you could draw another
bowl and just turn that jack. If you | 2:16:56 | 2:17:05
played weight on that, everything
has to go right. I think a draw | 2:17:05 | 2:17:10
would be the aerngs Dave. Answer,
Dave. A little tickle around the | 2:17:10 | 2:17:16
corner would be good. Get into this
position and then you're sitting | 2:17:16 | 2:17:20
saying to yourself, I've got two.
The pressure is on the opposition | 2:17:20 | 2:17:23
and if he miss, the best he could
hope for is a draw and set. I can | 2:17:23 | 2:17:29
see what he's going for. He has got
to get this perfect any wrong | 2:17:29 | 2:17:36
connection. Well, he has got the
jack through. OK. OK. OK. It's not | 2:17:36 | 2:17:42
great, but it's OK.
LAUGHTER | 2:17:42 | 2:17:44
Exactly. It's not great, but it's
OK! | 2:17:44 | 2:17:51 | |
We will have to see who is lying
here. Everything is a long way away. | 2:17:52 | 2:17:56
Yes. We have got two bowls left.
They need three shots. | 2:17:56 | 2:18:07
They need three shots. How can green
get three shots out of this? | 2:18:07 | 2:18:17
He could finish it off. One good
bowl here. One good bowl will do it. | 2:18:35 | 2:18:41
Yes. Well, that's a good shot for us
in terms of looking at it because | 2:18:41 | 2:18:46
it's two feet from the edge and we
can see it is a good bowl in term of | 2:18:46 | 2:18:50
line.
APPLAUSE | 2:18:50 | 2:18:56
Well, I just cannot see how on earth
they're going to make three out of | 2:18:56 | 2:19:00
this. | 2:19:00 | 2:19:08 | |
Well, John, we're always looking at
angles and shot options and I just | 2:19:12 | 2:19:16
can't see anything there to develop
what he needs, you know, it depends | 2:19:16 | 2:19:22
if he's lying two seconds or not.
Maybe he is lying two seconds. We | 2:19:22 | 2:19:27
can't tell. Nothing from Greg. A
good effort. | 2:19:27 | 2:19:34
APPLAUSE
Well, in the end, I think the more | 2:19:34 | 2:19:42
consistent pair won that match and
it is fair to say John, it was good | 2:19:42 | 2:19:48
value for Mark Dawes and Jamie
Chestney, Dawes was superb. I think | 2:19:48 | 2:19:51
that was probably the difference
today. Mark Dawes' consistency and I | 2:19:51 | 2:19:56
think worthy winners over the
tournament. Yes, absolutely. They | 2:19:56 | 2:20:00
played some great stuff and they
take the second set, 9-5 after | 2:20:00 | 2:20:05
drawing the first set 6-6.
But it is Mark Dawes and Jamie | 2:20:05 | 2:20:10
Chestney who win the world pairs
final here at Potters Leisure | 2:20:10 | 2:20:15
Resort. | 2:20:15 | 2:20:21
Resort. Well, right from the start,
we expected a very good game. | 2:20:21 | 2:20:26
Especially when you're talking about
the world number one and two, but | 2:20:26 | 2:20:30
these two, Mark Dawes and Jamie
Chestney were playing everything | 2:20:30 | 2:20:34
they needed to play under the
circumstances. They were brilliant. | 2:20:34 | 2:20:37
Nick Brett kept things going for his
pair. Mark Dawes was doing a lot of | 2:20:37 | 2:20:43
damage upfront. He drove in the end
and then drew two shots on that one. | 2:20:43 | 2:20:48
Jamie Chestney when he needed to
play a really good bowl, it was | 2:20:48 | 2:20:51
there, just dropping a little bit on
that one, but they were really lying | 2:20:51 | 2:20:56
three and whilst disappointed with
that, it was a good pick up, the | 2:20:56 | 2:21:01
previous bowl to move the jack and
that was the big five. That's where | 2:21:01 | 2:21:04
the match was won on the sixth end
when they picked up the five shots | 2:21:04 | 2:21:08
to go 6-3 in front.
And once again, they are putting | 2:21:08 | 2:21:13
bowls in all directions. Nothing
they could do, the guys in the last | 2:21:13 | 2:21:17
round, but Mark Dawes and Jamie
Chestney worthy winners, the | 2:21:17 | 2:21:23
professional world indoor pairs
champions for 2018. Ends won, well | 2:21:23 | 2:21:27
Harlow and Brett won more ends, but
they were heavily hit with a three | 2:21:27 | 2:21:31
and a five and that's where the
total scores came in, but look at | 2:21:31 | 2:21:36
the touchers, goodness me that was
Mark Dawes as well, 17-8. The guys | 2:21:36 | 2:21:40
were under pressure a lot all the
way, Harlow and Brett and Chestney | 2:21:40 | 2:21:46
and Dawes thoroughly deserve their
title. | 2:21:46 | 2:21:49
We can hear from all four players
starting with Greg. Different | 2:21:51 | 2:21:56
scenario here, but it was always
going to be close between four | 2:21:56 | 2:21:59
players of such quality, and so
closely matched? Yes, absolutely, I | 2:21:59 | 2:22:04
don't think there was too much in
the game to be fair. A very high | 2:22:04 | 2:22:08
standard game. Nick and I played one
bad end in the second set and that's | 2:22:08 | 2:22:13
probably obviously cost us the
match, but well played to the boys, | 2:22:13 | 2:22:16
they played great. I've sort of got
a sweet feeling because I actually | 2:22:16 | 2:22:22
put this pair together a couple of
years ago and it has come back to | 2:22:22 | 2:22:27
bite me in the do-da. You need to
have a word with your partner | 2:22:27 | 2:22:33
afterwards. I will do. When you know
each other, how much of a joy is it | 2:22:33 | 2:22:38
to play, but how difficult is it in
the heat of the battle? I think it's | 2:22:38 | 2:22:42
good to be fair. There was no malice
between any of us. We wanted to beat | 2:22:42 | 2:22:45
them. They wanted to beat us. They
bloody beat us! | 2:22:45 | 2:22:49
They did. They did. Jamie, those who
next to you, they've won this title | 2:22:49 | 2:22:54
before, but it's the first time that
you and Mark are lifting the title. | 2:22:54 | 2:23:00
I'm speech lrs at the moment. I
thought the standard, it was a great | 2:23:00 | 2:23:05
game of bowls and president guys got
one result and that gave us a bit of | 2:23:05 | 2:23:12
momentum in the second set and it
could have gone either way just on | 2:23:12 | 2:23:15
the day. Yeah, thrilled to win our
first. That fifth end of the second | 2:23:15 | 2:23:21
set so we might look at that. That
was obviously, sorry Nicky, a huge | 2:23:21 | 2:23:25
five. Yes, it was. Nicky has got a
terrible result with his runner and | 2:23:25 | 2:23:29
the way the game was going, it never
looked like a bibbing count was | 2:23:29 | 2:23:34
coming so to pick a five up was
massive really to be fair. It put | 2:23:34 | 2:23:39
you massively in the driving seat,
but it took you to the victory. You | 2:23:39 | 2:23:42
had to hold your nerve late on as
Nicky and Greg tried hard in the | 2:23:42 | 2:23:46
final end of the second set. But
you've now won a trophy at Potters, | 2:23:46 | 2:23:52
put into words what it would mean to
the pair of you? It is amazing. Put | 2:23:52 | 2:23:57
together a couple of years ago. Good
friends as well and it is good to | 2:23:57 | 2:24:00
win it with somebody else. You get
enjoyment from it all. It is amazed, | 2:24:00 | 2:24:08
when I started bowling, these are
the days you look forward to. You're | 2:24:08 | 2:24:12
going to have to share some of that
with Greg #230r for putting you | 2:24:12 | 2:24:18
together. Your pairs champions of
2018, Jamie Chestney and Mark Dawes. | 2:24:18 | 2:24:31
APPLAUSE
It is presentation time and here to | 2:24:31 | 2:24:36
make the presentations, your
appreciation please for the chief | 2:24:36 | 2:24:40

APPLAUSE | 2:24:49 | 2:24:54
And first to the runners up, ladies
and gentlemen, they gave us an | 2:24:54 | 2:24:58
absolutely terrific final, but
please, receiving their runners-up | 2:24:58 | 2:25:03
cheques, will you welcome Nick Brett
and Greg Harlow. | 2:25:03 | 2:25:12
APPLAUSE
And now to the winners, receiving a | 2:25:12 | 2:25:25
glass goblet each, a cheque and the
title of the 2018 Just world indoor | 2:25:25 | 2:25:32
pairs champions, it is Jamie
Chestney and Mark Dawes. | 2:25:32 | 2:25:39
APPLAUSE | 2:25:41 | 2:25:51
Ladies and gentlemen, one more time,
the delighted pair, they've done it, | 2:25:55 | 2:26:00
the winners, give it up for the 2018
Just World Indoor Pairs Champions, | 2:26:00 | 2:26:07
Jamie Chestney and Mark Dawes.
APPLAUSE | 2:26:07 | 2:26:18
Great reception for the new
champions. | 2:26:18 | 2:26:22
Jamie Chestney ranked number eight
in the world and Mark Dawes 12th, | 2:26:22 | 2:26:26
they saw off the one and two ranked
players in Nick Brett and Greg | 2:26:26 | 2:26:30
Harlow. A fantastic effort from the
winning pair. Just to remind you | 2:26:30 | 2:26:35
about the Australian Open highlights
coming after we come off air on BBC | 2:26:35 | 2:26:38
Two and that's at 4.45pm today.
We're concentrating on the singles | 2:26:38 | 2:26:47
next and it features the defending
champion, Paul Foster against | 2:26:47 | 2:26:56
67-year-old Lea Blackman. Paul
Foster has pulled out of the pairs | 2:26:56 | 2:27:02
and mixed pairs this year because of
the surprise and sudden death of his | 2:27:02 | 2:27:06
father last week and he is
concentrating on defending the title | 2:27:06 | 2:27:11
he won 12 months ago, but he
acknowledges how difficult things | 2:27:11 | 2:27:13
will be on the blue rink this week.
Today's game, I'm not going to tell | 2:27:13 | 2:27:21
lies, it will be difficult. I'm not
looking for excuses, it's not me. I | 2:27:21 | 2:27:27
know out there, I've just got to try
and do a professional job. Things | 2:27:27 | 2:27:32
are going well for me, great. I know
there will be times when I will have | 2:27:32 | 2:27:36
a few slack ends and things don't go
for me, and I will be thinking about | 2:27:36 | 2:27:41
him. I have got to get on with it.
That's what he'd want. I know my | 2:27:41 | 2:27:46
family want that as well. I will
have to do what I can. It's close. | 2:27:46 | 2:27:57
It has always been good to go back
to Potters, especially defending | 2:27:57 | 2:28:02
champion. It has been a quiet year.
I always enjoy it down here. | 2:28:02 | 2:28:13
Everybody was talking about it is my
20th year. It is a long time ago, | 2:28:13 | 2:28:16
but I still remember it well at
Preston and beating Mervin cap king | 2:28:16 | 2:28:22
in the final and it was a great
match and I'm still here 20 years | 2:28:22 | 2:28:25
on. He's overweight. He's going to
say bye. The new champion of the | 2:28:25 | 2:28:32
world, looked at that smile. My
whole family was there that day and | 2:28:32 | 2:28:36
I had never been involved in
anything like that in my life and to | 2:28:36 | 2:28:41
be in a world film, it was surreal.
I didn't know what was happening and | 2:28:41 | 2:28:44
I kept doing what I was doing and it
was a very proud moment. The 2017 | 2:28:44 | 2:28:53
world indoor singles champion, Paul
Foster MBE. I have been fortunate to | 2:28:53 | 2:28:57
hold the title five times and if I
get a sixth, great. If I don't, it's | 2:28:57 | 2:29:02
not the end of the world. A lot of
things have been put in prospective | 2:29:02 | 2:29:06
now. Bowls has been really good to
me, but family comes first. | 2:29:06 | 2:29:11
Family does indeed come first, but
if Paul Foster can keep his mind on | 2:29:11 | 2:29:15
the game this week, then, of course,
is very much the man to beat, but he | 2:29:15 | 2:29:19
is up against a thraented player in
67-year-old Lea Blackman who only | 2:29:19 | 2:29:25
started playing the sport 14 years
ago when he retired from his job as | 2:29:25 | 2:29:32
a human resources manager at an
Asset Management company. | 2:29:32 | 2:29:38
I am Lea Blackman. I'm 67. I think
the oldest English qualifier ever | 2:29:38 | 2:29:48
and the only qualifier from East
Anglia which is rather nice. I | 2:29:48 | 2:29:52
qualified at Bromley Indoor Club
which is one of four qualifying | 2:29:52 | 2:29:56
places in England and it is a
process over eight or nine, ten | 2:29:56 | 2:30:01
hours and a straight knock-out
competition. Anyone can enter these | 2:30:01 | 2:30:07
competition and if you're lucky like
me, you can end up in this fantastic | 2:30:07 | 2:30:12
arena at the World Championships.
I'm not expected to win. I'm the | 2:30:12 | 2:30:15
under dog. There is no pressure on
me. I feel very relaxed and I intend | 2:30:15 | 2:30:23
to be very focussed and give him as
hard a time as possible. I'm not | 2:30:23 | 2:30:27
coming out here just to make up the
numbers. I'm coming out here to win. | 2:30:27 | 2:30:33
I only started bowling, I rolled my
first bowl when I was 53. So, you | 2:30:33 | 2:30:40
know, it progressed from there. I
have won a number of sort of county | 2:30:40 | 2:30:49
and national titles and it has
progressed and this so far is the | 2:30:49 | 2:30:53
pinnacle of my achievements. My wife
is here. The family is two children | 2:30:53 | 2:30:58
and four grand kids and they are all
watching at home. Plus I will have | 2:30:58 | 2:31:05
supporters from a number of clubs
really which is rather nice. So, I | 2:31:05 | 2:31:11
hope there will be a lot of people
here making quite a lot of noise for | 2:31:11 | 2:31:16
me. | 2:31:16 | 2:31:17 | |
going to help in terms of drying to
draw the shot. | 2:31:17 | 2:31:18
What a story. David alongside me
again. Incredible progression in 14 | 2:31:18 | 2:31:25
years from picking up a bowl for the
first time 14 years ago? Yes. My | 2:31:25 | 2:31:30
goodness, he retired early didn't he
when you think about it. He worked | 2:31:30 | 2:31:34
for an Asset Management company! I
know Lee, he's coming over the play | 2:31:34 | 2:31:39
against us in the national team and
he's a very good player, no doubt, | 2:31:39 | 2:31:44
but this is a massive league, it
really is. It's that movement to | 2:31:44 | 2:31:49
play up against the top players. He
hasn't got one of the lesser seeds, | 2:31:49 | 2:31:54
he has Paul Foster and that is
really tough. What would he be | 2:31:54 | 2:31:59
feeling now if you could put
yourself in his shoes given his | 2:31:59 | 2:32:02
opponents? Really he'll be thinking
to himself, get on the score card, | 2:32:02 | 2:32:09
basic as that. He'll want to get off
and running, build up and work his | 2:32:09 | 2:32:14
way through. We know about Paul's
situation, but he's a dedicated | 2:32:14 | 2:32:19
professional for 20 years, Paul
Foster. He'll go out there to do a | 2:32:19 | 2:32:25
job and won't underestimate someone
like Lee because he knows he's come | 2:32:25 | 2:32:28
through the qualifiers and they are
not easy. Indeed. The players just | 2:32:28 | 2:32:31
warming up. Just a little bit more
about Paul Foster. We speak about | 2:32:31 | 2:32:37
his position in the game's Echelons.
He's a five-time champion. No matter | 2:32:37 | 2:32:42
what people say about how difficult
things are, he is the man to beat | 2:32:42 | 2:32:47
just in terms of talent? Yes. Not
only that, but to be one of the best | 2:32:47 | 2:32:52
players in the world, five-times
champion, you have to be mentally | 2:32:52 | 2:32:55
very strong. So from a pure
psychological point of view, I think | 2:32:55 | 2:32:59
Paul will be fine. He's probably
worked out how to deal with the | 2:32:59 | 2:33:03
problems. What about the idea that
people say, when you are suffering | 2:33:03 | 2:33:07
bereavement, it's sometimes gad to
have your mind distracted by | 2:33:07 | 2:33:10
something else, would that be
something that you would suggest | 2:33:10 | 2:33:13
might happen to him this afternoon?
Well, yes. I think he'll remove | 2:33:13 | 2:33:17
himself from that. I had a good chat
with him a few days ago and Paul is | 2:33:17 | 2:33:22
a sort of character that he'll know
exactly what everyone wants from him | 2:33:22 | 2:33:27
and that is a great performance. I
think he'll deliver, I really do. | 2:33:27 | 2:33:31
It's a fascinating match-up for us
to watch because of course he has to | 2:33:31 | 2:33:35
cope with that particular issue,
whereas Lee obviously has to cope | 2:33:35 | 2:33:39
with playing someone like Paul, I
guess if we were just talking about | 2:33:39 | 2:33:43
these two guys in terms of ability
you would say Paul could win? Yes | 2:33:43 | 2:33:48
and by some distance to be truthful.
There are many really good players | 2:33:48 | 2:33:52
that have played at this level
before who've won at qualifying and | 2:33:52 | 2:33:57
the last thing you want to the is
face Paul Foster believe me, even if | 2:33:57 | 2:34:02
you have been there before as a
newby, at this stage of his life you | 2:34:02 | 2:34:06
are sort of thinking, this is the
best thing ever and he'll enjoy it. | 2:34:06 | 2:34:09
Lee's a nice guy. He's a happy chap,
he's not a down sort of guy, he'll | 2:34:09 | 2:34:14
love it. He was telling me he used
to play a lot of ten H pin bowling | 2:34:14 | 2:34:19
and that was the closest he got to
bowling before he started in the | 2:34:19 | 2:34:23
sport 14 years ago. Thank you very
much. Let's just remind you of the | 2:34:23 | 2:34:27
situation: | 2:34:27 | 2:34:34
Those are the players through to the
second round of the singles. So who | 2:34:58 | 2:35:02
will join them? Paul Foster, the
five-time champion or the newcomer | 2:35:02 | 2:35:07
to this event, Lea Blackham? Here is
our MC to welcome the players | 2:35:07 | 2:35:10
to this event, Lea Blackham? Here is
our MC to welcome the players out. | 2:35:10 | 2:35:11
Thank you very much. This
grandfather from Colchester has many | 2:35:11 | 2:35:18
national titles to his credit and is
absolutely delighted to have | 2:35:18 | 2:35:21
qualified for the event. A national
over 60s champion, your appreciation | 2:35:21 | 2:35:28
please for Lea Blackham. | 2:35:28 | 2:35:30
APPLAUSE.

Time to get this first round match
under way. We can head up to the | 2:36:24 | 2:36:30
commentary box where David and John
are waiting for us. | 2:36:30 | 2:36:32
Thank you. Only a short sprint up
here, so no real problem! | 2:36:32 | 2:36:38
And really this has got to be the
most daunting situation for, well | 2:36:38 | 2:36:43
first of all it's hard for any
player but someone with, I think | 2:36:43 | 2:36:48
it's fair to say, limited experience
at the very top level, John. That's | 2:36:48 | 2:36:52
not being disrespectful to Lea but
he knows that. I've played against | 2:36:52 | 2:36:59
him when he's been over in Northern
Ireland. But it's a tough one. It | 2:36:59 | 2:37:05
certainly is. Paul Foster a great
player. Five-time winner of this | 2:37:05 | 2:37:11
event. I'm sure Lea will look
forward to this. Whatever happens, | 2:37:11 | 2:37:17
the experience will be good for him. | 2:37:17 | 2:37:24
There's also an element of, I have
got absolutely nothing to lose. | 2:37:24 | 2:37:35
got absolutely nothing to lose. He's
going to really enjoy it. He's a | 2:37:35 | 2:37:38
really nice, upbeat guy. I'm sure
he'll give it everything he has and | 2:37:38 | 2:37:42
see what happens. Paul Foster hasn't
played in the pairs, or mixed pairs, | 2:37:42 | 2:37:51
hasn't had the time on the green
that he'd normally have. | 2:37:51 | 2:38:00
Unfortunately, Paul lost his dad.
I'm sure we'd all like to send | 2:38:00 | 2:38:05
condolences to he and his family.
His dad was a really great guy, a | 2:38:05 | 2:38:11
good supporter of Paul. We send
condolences to the family and to | 2:38:11 | 2:38:14
Paul. It's an emotional time for him
to come out here today and defend | 2:38:14 | 2:38:18
his title under the circumstances,
David? Yes, it is. You have to be | 2:38:18 | 2:38:25
very mentally strong to have won all
the events he has won, but this is a | 2:38:25 | 2:38:30
different situation, an emotional
one. He will put as much as he | 2:38:30 | 2:38:37
possibly can into the back of his
mind. We were talking about | 2:38:37 | 2:38:43
occasionally, you just want to dip
and start thinking and don't want to | 2:38:43 | 2:38:52
get distracted. He'll be looking to
do his best under the circumstances | 2:38:52 | 2:38:55
and play as well as he can. | 2:38:55 | 2:38:58
The advantage for Lea is that he's
not had too far to go from where he | 2:39:24 | 2:39:35
lives in Colchester. | 2:39:35 | 2:39:38
Close with this one and a chance.
Oh, yes, played it well. | 2:39:58 | 2:40:05
Very good first for both players. | 2:40:11 | 2:40:21
David Gourlay, an interested
spectator. | 2:40:28 | 2:40:38
Well, that's exactly what Lea had to
do, get on the card early. He | 2:40:54 | 2:40:58
doesn't want to be chasing a Blank
side of the card. That's a nervous | 2:40:58 | 2:41:04
thing really. Trying to get a shot
or two, or three or four on it. It | 2:41:04 | 2:41:11
really is a situation where he can
settle down. He's managed that and | 2:41:11 | 2:41:14
can build on it. It's the same at
any level of bowls. Whether it be | 2:41:14 | 2:41:20
club or world singles, you want to
get on the ball -- on the board. | 2:41:20 | 2:41:27
Settles the butterflies. | 2:41:27 | 2:41:35
It will be interesting to see
whether Paul Foster gets the | 2:41:35 | 2:41:38
opportunity to get the jack when it
goes 23, 24 metres. I've no doubt he | 2:41:38 | 2:41:45
will. | 2:41:45 | 2:41:52 | |
APPLAUSE. | 2:41:57 | 2:42:07
When it comes to Paul Foster, he's
been everything in the game and done | 2:42:35 | 2:42:39
everything in the game that he
really wants to do. | 2:42:39 | 2:42:43
APPLAUSE. | 2:42:43 | 2:42:47
When you see profiles, and we have
them for Paul going back 20 years, | 2:42:51 | 2:42:56
but when it's multiple pages, well,
as you know he's been about a long | 2:42:56 | 2:43:02
time. A top, top player. | 2:43:02 | 2:43:06
APPLAUSE. | 2:43:10 | 2:43:17
Good bowl by Lea. | 2:43:17 | 2:43:25
Oh, a good reply.
APPLAUSE. | 2:43:36 | 2:43:46
The profile of him is extensively
completed in hand writing that you | 2:43:56 | 2:44:01
can actually read! Which helps.
Don't get a lot of information | 2:44:01 | 2:44:07
sometimes on the players. | 2:44:07 | 2:44:17
Ooh. He nearly got that on the
run-through. Yes. Played a firm | 2:44:18 | 2:44:24
delivery. There were opportunities
there. A few chances obviously just | 2:44:24 | 2:44:29
inside the line. | 2:44:29 | 2:44:37
Paul Foster probably not going to
bother. And he's not sure. | 2:44:38 | 2:44:46
APPLAUSE.
1-1 after two ends. | 2:44:46 | 2:44:55
Paul's ball down the rink. The jack
is delivered. 26 metres. | 2:45:10 | 2:45:20
Lea Blackham retired at the very
young age of 54. People think back | 2:45:44 | 2:45:48
home that's a good way to spend your
life if you can do it. He keeps | 2:45:48 | 2:45:53
himself well and fit. | 2:45:53 | 2:46:00
Paul normally uses a wide swinging
ball. | 2:46:13 | 2:46:22 | |
Certainly it's the same
manufacturer. Depending on the rink, | 2:46:28 | 2:46:37
Paul doesn't really change bowls
very much. He's a tendency to stay | 2:46:37 | 2:46:41
to the model he's used to. | 2:46:41 | 2:46:52
Problems now in the back position.
One down. | 2:47:16 | 2:47:26
One down. Steady delivery. | 2:47:26 | 2:47:30
Still struggling is it? Oh, he's got
a clear road, thought he was going | 2:47:54 | 2:47:58
to get caught on the red.
APPLAUSE. | 2:47:58 | 2:48:06
It's certainly a shot on, isn't it?
The back two as well... | 2:48:06 | 2:48:13
It looks better on the forehand.
There is no space on it. | 2:48:13 | 2:48:22
There is no space on it. Oh, clean
as a whistle and right in on top of | 2:48:22 | 2:48:24
it. | 2:48:24 | 2:48:31 | |
Didn't mess about with that, did he?
Played it well. Clean strike on the | 2:48:35 | 2:48:40
jack. Problem with having three
short bowls for Paul Foster. He was | 2:48:40 | 2:48:52
going to lose multiples and Blackham
has started off extremely well here. | 2:48:52 | 2:49:00
APPLAUSE. | 2:49:33 | 2:49:39
APPLAUSE.
The question is, how long will it be | 2:49:57 | 2:50:02
before Paul Foster goes short? Good
opener by Paul there. | 2:50:02 | 2:50:07
Lea set out a stall that he prefers
the longer jack length, no doubt | 2:50:08 | 2:50:13
about that. | 2:50:13 | 2:50:21
Waving at that. You get the
impression something is wrong. | 2:50:33 | 2:50:38
Something up when he does that. Yes,
that's the trouble. | 2:50:38 | 2:50:47
Decent bowl. Drops inside that,
he'll probably score for two. | 2:51:09 | 2:51:23
He punches on to the red and the
jack moves, it's coming to him... | 2:51:36 | 2:51:41
So definitely worth playing to it. | 2:51:41 | 2:51:47
I don't think he needed that. It
looked like a forehand shot. On the | 2:52:05 | 2:52:11
back hand he was moving it but the
red bowl was going with the jack, | 2:52:11 | 2:52:15
whereas on the forehand, the red
bowl was going away from the jack. | 2:52:15 | 2:52:27
That's unlike Paul Foster. | 2:52:36 | 2:52:44
It's also quite difficult to come on
after a very good final, the | 2:52:55 | 2:53:00
previous match. People have moved
out of the arena and they're coming | 2:53:00 | 2:53:05
back in again. I think it's always
difficult coming in after a final | 2:53:05 | 2:53:10
like that as well. There's a lot of
movement, the crowd go out. | 2:53:10 | 2:53:18
Atmospheric conditions change. | 2:53:18 | 2:53:20
It's never easy in these situations.
You can drop a yard very quickly. It | 2:53:26 | 2:53:32
will take the players a few ends.
It's a very good start by Lea, I | 2:53:32 | 2:53:36
have to say. Excellent drive for the
treble. | 2:53:36 | 2:53:42
He has had success in the game. | 2:53:42 | 2:53:51
2012, the Suffolk singles champion.
That is no mane feat. Quite a lot of | 2:53:57 | 2:54:02
gad bowlers involved there. He's won
other things with regards to the | 2:54:02 | 2:54:08
over 60s nationals and again, in
England that's not easy. -- no mean | 2:54:08 | 2:54:13
feat. | 2:54:13 | 2:54:17 | |
This will be a step up in class
because, at some point, you would | 2:54:19 | 2:54:24
expect Paul to put a lot of close
bowls on this end. He'll start | 2:54:24 | 2:54:28
asking a few questions of him. | 2:54:28 | 2:54:30
Close with this. Yes, he's got it.
Dropped down. | 2:54:32 | 2:54:45
A touch on that. | 2:55:03 | 2:55:05
Paul reckoned he was well up with
that bowl. | 2:55:12 | 2:55:20
that bowl. The crowd will come in... | 2:55:20 | 2:55:34
He'll come back strong in the second
set as he gets into his game. Lea | 2:55:42 | 2:55:48
started well. Played some very good
bowls already. | 2:55:48 | 2:55:55
Inside line. | 2:55:55 | 2:56:02
Not an easy last bowl shot to score. | 2:56:13 | 2:56:23
He's very, very happy to accept
that. | 2:56:45 | 2:56:54 | |
Another good start. | 2:57:44 | 2:57:52
Good reply by Paul. | 2:58:04 | 2:58:13
APPLAUSE. | 2:58:52 | 2:58:54
He's going again. Attacking with
this bowl. Played it well. | 2:59:03 | 2:59:09
Previously he got the jack
absolutely clean. Can't blame him. | 2:59:09 | 2:59:16
I hope John is out there listening. | 2:59:25 | 2:59:31
It's not what he wanted but takes
that shot away. Well, brings in the | 2:59:31 | 2:59:38
tiny shot on the other side now on
the back hand. Takes a forehand | 2:59:38 | 2:59:45
drive out but the back hand is still
available. | 2:59:45 | 2:59:57
He's just a drawing with this one,
Dave. Yes. Good effort. Big try. | 3:00:09 | 3:00:14
He's drawn this. After a drive.
That's the problem for Paul Foster | 3:00:14 | 3:00:20
isn't it. The last was one bowl as
well. The three that he picked up | 3:00:20 | 3:00:27
was one bowl as well so this is
where the danger can be with a lot | 3:00:27 | 3:00:33
of players. Four bowls out there but
if they get in with one, it can be | 3:00:33 | 3:00:36
enough. He did well there actually
from playing the weighted bowl. | 3:00:36 | 3:00:41
Dropped off into the back hand and
drew it dead and nailed it. | 3:00:41 | 3:00:52
I thought he would have played just
a reaching bowl. But he's building | 3:00:52 | 3:00:58
up a tidy little lead here. | 3:00:58 | 3:01:03
If he scores the next end, well he's
favourite to take the set. The thing | 3:01:14 | 3:01:19
about that is, all the pressure then
transfers across to Paul Foster. Not | 3:01:19 | 3:01:24
only does he have to win the second,
but he will have to win the | 3:01:24 | 3:01:28
tie-break. | 3:01:28 | 3:01:33
tie-break. Difficult for Paul to
come here after what happened and it | 3:01:36 | 3:01:39
depends on as well what's going on
in his mind and his mental state. He | 3:01:39 | 3:01:44
won't be as sharp as he would have
liked to have been. It's a tough one | 3:01:44 | 3:01:47
for him. It is. | 3:01:47 | 3:01:50
liked to have been. It's a tough one
for him. It is. And under the | 3:01:50 | 3:01:53
circumstances people wouldn't have
been surprised if he had withdrawn. | 3:01:53 | 3:01:55
I think if he hadn't been defending
champion, he probably would have, it | 3:01:55 | 3:02:00
wouldn't hurt him for one year. He
has got many, many years ahead of | 3:02:00 | 3:02:07
him, but because he was defending
champion, he wanted to be here for | 3:02:07 | 3:02:10
the singles. I'm sure he wants to do
well for his father as well, but | 3:02:10 | 3:02:16
it's a tough one and full credit to
him today to come out and defend his | 3:02:16 | 3:02:21
title. Two good bowls. Two good lead
bowls. | 3:02:21 | 3:02:33
Not a bad bowl there. | 3:02:52 | 3:03:00
A clean road would be better and
just the edge. A little bit unlucky | 3:03:14 | 3:03:20
with that. The gap is three inches.
He has a good position here. He has | 3:03:20 | 3:03:26
got his own bowl to use and he can
afford to use this. Punch the red | 3:03:26 | 3:03:31
bowl out and turn the jack around
the corner. Worth arriving with a | 3:03:31 | 3:03:34
little bit of weight. | 3:03:34 | 3:03:41
little bit of weight. If he has got
the run in, he's on a very good line | 3:03:41 | 3:03:44
here. He has the running. This is
close. Yes. | 3:03:44 | 3:03:52
APPLAUSE
A nice positive bowl by Lea there. | 3:03:56 | 3:04:00
Plenty of opportunities off the side
of that bowl. Gets the jack. He | 3:04:00 | 3:04:04
could have made it a double as well.
Paul is playing weighted. He doesn't | 3:04:04 | 3:04:08
like it much. Gets a result. Gets
the green solid. A little touch on | 3:04:08 | 3:04:13
the jack on the way through. I think
he has turned it into one red. A | 3:04:13 | 3:04:20
good conversion shot. Yes, he did
well. Solid on the green into the | 3:04:20 | 3:04:24
back green. A little bit of moment
on the jack. I was looking at his | 3:04:24 | 3:04:30
face as that bowl was coming down, I
don't think he was too sure about | 3:04:30 | 3:04:33
the result he was going to get.
Never is when there is distance | 3:04:33 | 3:04:38
between the bowl you're hitting,
David, you're never quite certain. | 3:04:38 | 3:04:46
Fore hand, Lea Blackham is on a good
line. It depends on his weight. He | 3:04:47 | 3:04:54
is not far away from the jack. It
needs to stop though. And it has. He | 3:04:54 | 3:04:59
played that well.
APPLAUSE | 3:04:59 | 3:05:07
He is asking a lot of questions of
Paul Foster here and we are at the | 3:05:07 | 3:05:11
business end now. We are saeventh
end of a nine end set. Paul Foster | 3:05:11 | 3:05:15
really can't afford to lose this
end. A little runner down the | 3:05:15 | 3:05:21
backhand. A little timing shot. Now
is he going to get a good | 3:05:21 | 3:05:27
connection?
Oh, didn't want the edge. | 3:05:27 | 3:05:39
Oh, didn't want the edge. Another
single. | 3:05:39 | 3:05:44
Playing well. Playing solid at the
moment. | 3:05:46 | 3:05:54
Well, he is certainly looking good
for the first set. There hadn't been | 3:05:54 | 3:06:00
a situation building twos and threes
really the way that things have been | 3:06:00 | 3:06:04
sitting. Obviously Lea drove the
jack into the ditch, but there | 3:06:04 | 3:06:10
haven't been the threes and fours
for either player. | 3:06:10 | 3:06:20
Paul needs to score on this end.
Ideally he needs a double or a | 3:06:48 | 3:06:53
treble to get him back into the set.
A decent opening. Good weight. | 3:06:53 | 3:07:08
A decent opening. Good weight. The
winner of this match will play the | 3:07:09 | 3:07:11
winner of Jason Greenslade and
Robert Gordon. That's a big game for | 3:07:11 | 3:07:17
Jason. He needs some points at the
lower end of the ranking. He needs | 3:07:17 | 3:07:24
points Jason. It's an important game
for him. He's on the edge. | 3:07:24 | 3:07:34
for him. He's on the edge. There are
some tasty second round matches | 3:07:34 | 3:07:36
coming up. Let's see how Paul gets
on with this one. A decent line. Now | 3:07:36 | 3:07:44
is the weight? Oh, pacing through a
bit. | 3:07:44 | 3:07:56 | |
Mark Royal, Andrew Kelly, Nick Brett
and Mervin King. : There is some | 3:07:59 | 3:08:10
great stuff there. Played it.
Pressure on. Set lie. | 3:08:10 | 3:08:25
He's not sure. He sort of knew that
wasn't right out of the hand and | 3:08:27 | 3:08:39
there is reasons why we're not
seeing the real Paul Foster here and | 3:08:39 | 3:08:44
it's testing for him. | 3:08:44 | 3:08:52
it's testing for him. Lea is playing
steady bowls and on occasion some | 3:08:53 | 3:08:57
very good bowls and it's keeping
Paul Foster under pressure, but he's | 3:08:57 | 3:09:00
looking very good for this first set
now. | 3:09:00 | 3:09:07 | |
now. Paul needs to just draw one in
here on the backhand side. Normally | 3:09:12 | 3:09:16
he is so good on this hand. Once
again, he didn't look terribly | 3:09:16 | 3:09:23
positive. It will be closer this
one, there is no doubt about that. | 3:09:23 | 3:09:26
But will he get back in time? That's
the question. Well, might be enough | 3:09:26 | 3:09:32
to give him a single. Want it had
full for a double. | 3:09:32 | 3:09:40
full for a double. He's not sure.
APPLAUSE | 3:09:45 | 3:09:53
Paul Foster had a quick look. He has
decided it was against him. | 3:09:53 | 3:10:03
decided it was against him. Ed it
full for a double. He's not sure. | 3:10:03 | 3:10:04
APPLAUSE
Paul Foster had a quick look. He has | 3:10:04 | 3:10:06
decided it was against him. He would
have needed four in the last end if | 3:10:06 | 3:10:09
it had been a single, John, but 8-2,
it's not looking great for the | 3:10:09 | 3:10:14
defending champion. He needs to
start off fresh in this set. | 3:10:14 | 3:10:25
start off fresh in this set. Jack
length 28.5 meters. I think it is a | 3:10:25 | 3:10:28
consideration at the moment that
possibly Paul's mindset isn't quite | 3:10:28 | 3:10:32
right. Lea is playing steady bowls,
but it's a difficult one. | 3:10:32 | 3:10:42
APPLAUSE | 3:10:48 | 3:10:53
You can catch the bowls over the
next 24 hours we're on tonight, | 3:11:05 | 3:11:12
7.30pm again, Jason and Robert, as
we said it is an important game for | 3:11:12 | 3:11:17
Jason Greenslade. Tonight, we have
got the highlights at 12.15 BBC Two | 3:11:17 | 3:11:22
and tomorrow we're open again at
10am. | 3:11:22 | 3:11:29 | |
10am. And then mixed pairs final
tomorrow afternoon. | 3:11:30 | 3:11:38
The open singles, well, that's a
great looking match. That will | 3:11:38 | 3:11:42
follow the pairs on BBC Two. | 3:11:42 | 3:11:49
follow the pairs on BBC Two. Some
nice stuff there, John. Yes, some | 3:11:49 | 3:11:52
good games to look forward to.
That's a good bowl by Paul. | 3:11:52 | 3:12:01
I know we will be here watching, but
I think we will be watching them | 3:12:01 | 3:12:06
anyway because there is some
fantastic matches there. We've got | 3:12:06 | 3:12:10
the prime seat. Well, not really the
prime seat, but a lot of monitors in | 3:12:10 | 3:12:15
front of us, but we can see
everything. It's warm and cosy, | 3:12:15 | 3:12:20
David, isn't it? It is certainly
that, yes. | 3:12:20 | 3:12:27
that, yes. Just overweight. A good
effort. Paul Foster is holding a | 3:12:27 | 3:12:31
singing at the moment by the looks
of it. | 3:12:31 | 3:12:38 | |
of it. We're back into the short
clock, of course, running down from | 3:12:40 | 3:12:44
30 seconds. Paul will take a
time-out and add another 60 on. When | 3:12:44 | 3:12:52
it gets down to five or six, he'll
indicate. Paul has four time-outs | 3:12:52 | 3:12:58
remaining. | 3:12:58 | 3:13:03
remaining. The time-outs, they are
allowed in the first two sets. He | 3:13:03 | 3:13:11
would probably play the hack hand
side to try and get to those green | 3:13:11 | 3:13:17
bowl. If he just edges the green and
just lies it down, he'll get three | 3:13:17 | 3:13:23
from it. | 3:13:23 | 3:13:31
from it. A really good effort by
Paul. He was unfortunate then. | 3:13:31 | 3:13:40
APPLAUSE
Back to the backhand again after | 3:13:40 | 3:13:42
playing the fore hand. It depends
how much weight he wants to use. The | 3:13:42 | 3:13:48
danger is going tee heavy. -- going
too heavy. He has to make a positive | 3:13:48 | 3:13:56
impact on the front bowl, but if it
goes with the jack and Paul Foster | 3:13:56 | 3:14:00
has got the last bowl he could be no
better off. | 3:14:00 | 3:14:11
better off. I can't see him getting
the split without the jack moving. | 3:14:12 | 3:14:15
It's just so close to that front
bowl so. Let's just see how much | 3:14:15 | 3:14:22
weight he's using because this is a
hard shot fur' not used to it. I | 3:14:22 | 3:14:25
don't think it will hold out. It
will go on the inside line. It goes | 3:14:25 | 3:14:30
away quick, David. I quite like the
weight he used. But he was on the | 3:14:30 | 3:14:34
wrong line for that weight. It is
hard to pick out the right weight. | 3:14:34 | 3:14:37
Those are the sort of shots that
Paul Foster needs to force Lea into | 3:14:37 | 3:14:41
playing because they are low
percentage as you know John and | 3:14:41 | 3:14:44
especially if | 3:14:44 | 3:14:49
especially if you're new to the
carpet. Not an easy one for Paul to | 3:14:53 | 3:14:56
add, but if he gets the green bowl
at the right angle, he can make four | 3:14:56 | 3:15:00
out of it. Played it well. A good
bowl by Paul. Well played Paul | 3:15:00 | 3:15:03
Foster. Three definite. But it looks
like four to me. | 3:15:03 | 3:15:11
UMPIRE: Four shots, Paul Foster. A
little touch was enough. Yeah, a | 3:15:11 | 3:15:20
very good start to the second set
for Paul. It will be a boost. | 3:15:20 | 3:15:33
The jack leng is 26 meters.
-- the jack length is 26 meters. | 3:15:38 | 3:15:50
APPLAUSE | 3:16:02 | 3:16:10
He's there or thereabouts again. A
nice spot that. Just running through | 3:16:41 | 3:16:45
a shade, but it will not do any harm
back there. Lea will be just looking | 3:16:45 | 3:16:51
to arrive at his bowl, drop down off
it. | 3:16:51 | 3:16:58 | |
Well, it is a wonderful situation,
John, when you think about it. We're | 3:17:08 | 3:17:13
one of the very few sports when you
can take up the sport at any age and | 3:17:13 | 3:17:18
enter the qualifiers and end up
against the world champion. There is | 3:17:18 | 3:17:22
very few sports where that is
actually available to you. Pay your | 3:17:22 | 3:17:26
money to the professional bowl
association and get into it and take | 3:17:26 | 3:17:31
your chance and suddenly you're on
television live against the world | 3:17:31 | 3:17:35
champion. | 3:17:35 | 3:17:41
Yes, close to it. Bowled and jack.
He didn't get the jack, but he got | 3:17:46 | 3:17:52
the bowl clean and that's enough, I
think. | 3:17:52 | 3:17:58
APPLAUSE
He hit that one well, more positive. | 3:17:58 | 3:18:02
He will use the weighted bowl and it
is normally pretty close as well. He | 3:18:02 | 3:18:06
doesn't want to get sucked into
playing the controlled shots. Keep | 3:18:06 | 3:18:10
to the strong stuff because he's
good at it. He's accurate and Paul's | 3:18:10 | 3:18:16
lost his way with the last one. This
is the time when Paul has to just | 3:18:16 | 3:18:25
try and get himself right. It's a
hard thing to ask him to do, but | 3:18:25 | 3:18:31
everybody handles things in
different ways, but it's tough now | 3:18:31 | 3:18:35
for him. He's changed from That from
one into three. | 3:18:35 | 3:18:42
APPLAUSE
UMPIRE: Three shots, Lea Blackham. | 3:18:42 | 3:18:51
Well, after losing a four, you
couldn't ask for much better. | 3:18:51 | 3:19:03
The jack length is 29 meters. | 3:19:30 | 3:19:41
A long jack again. A good start by
Lea. | 3:19:52 | 3:19:55 | |
APPLAUSE | 3:19:55 | 3:20:04
Once again Lea is sticking to the
longer jack length. It has been very | 3:20:27 | 3:20:33
successful for him. Dropping inside. | 3:20:33 | 3:20:43
Well, a better second, but still not
close enough. | 3:20:57 | 3:21:04
He just overplayed that. It is not a
bad spot, but a missed opportunity | 3:21:23 | 3:21:27
really. Yeah, over corrected it with
a short bowl, that was the problem | 3:21:27 | 3:21:33
and better behind it obviously, but
Paul is just on the draw. Just wants | 3:21:33 | 3:21:37
to sneak past the green one. Well,
his weight wasn't bad actually | 3:21:37 | 3:21:43
because he pushed that about three
or four inches so he probably had | 3:21:43 | 3:21:46
enough weight.
Paul Foster wants to get hold of | 3:21:46 | 3:21:54
that jack. | 3:21:54 | 3:21:59
I think it is a similar bowl for
Paul. He could get off the second | 3:22:13 | 3:22:18
bowl, the red. A similar weight, I
think. Yes, even a foot more just to | 3:22:18 | 3:22:25
turn his own bowl over if he doesn't
get back into the head. He needs to | 3:22:25 | 3:22:29
reach. Played it well. Has he got to
turn it? Not quite. That's what I | 3:22:29 | 3:22:36
was thinking he would play just
slightly over. Very unfortunate. He | 3:22:36 | 3:22:40
was so close then. Well, not the
single shot that's the problem, it | 3:22:40 | 3:22:46
is the jack length. | 3:22:46 | 3:22:51
Well, he is keeping the mat right
back on the three meter T mark. | 3:23:01 | 3:23:11
Probably quite sensibly at the
moment. It keeps a lot of distance | 3:23:11 | 3:23:15
between Paul and the jack and even
though he's not nailing it with | 3:23:15 | 3:23:19
every bowl, he's playing at least
one very good one. | 3:23:19 | 3:23:26
APPLAUSE
Just about. | 3:24:22 | 3:24:27
Still room there.
Paul Foster just on the outside edge | 3:24:27 | 3:24:33
of the mat even with the strong bias
bowl so he can push them out wide | 3:24:33 | 3:24:39
and let them dip towards the end of
its travel. | 3:24:39 | 3:24:44
APPLAUSE
That makes it. | 3:24:44 | 3:24:49
It's just about reaching. Might get
over the seem. No. | 3:25:07 | 3:25:22
I can tell by Paul's reaction there,
whether he liked it or not. He is | 3:25:23 | 3:25:31
getting back. He has played it well.
APPLAUSE | 3:25:31 | 3:25:37
Still a one. Certainly came off a
wide line. | 3:25:37 | 3:25:48
Just overplayed his chance for Paul
Foster to pick up a multiple here. | 3:26:05 | 3:26:19
Now, is he getting up? He wants to
guarantee a second at the very | 3:26:20 | 3:26:25
least.
One shot, Paul Foster. | 3:26:25 | 3:26:39
APPLAUSE
That score 5-4 after four ends. Five | 3:26:40 | 3:26:45
ends to be played. And Lea Blackham
is right in this match. And there is | 3:26:45 | 3:26:56
the mat up the rink. Well up the
rink actually. Jack length 24 | 3:26:56 | 3:27:03
meters.
There we see it. And 24 meters. It | 3:27:03 | 3:27:08
was going to happen sometime. Paul
was going to pull the mat up or keep | 3:27:08 | 3:27:13
it back and play a very short
length. | 3:27:13 | 3:27:22
APPLAUSE | 3:27:28 | 3:27:35
It's a good bowl. It looks like it
is going to reach up to the red one. | 3:27:46 | 3:27:54
APPLAUSE
A cracking line in. Just pulled up | 3:27:54 | 3:27:56
short. | 3:27:56 | 3:28:04
Good again here. A clear road.
Excellent. Just went down the gap. | 3:28:07 | 3:28:14
It's there, but an edge in the green
one would have been absolutely | 3:28:14 | 3:28:19
perfect. Lea can afford to reach his
own bowl or come off the red one. | 3:28:19 | 3:28:35
Well, he has missed it, but he has
put it into a good position. | 3:28:39 | 3:28:51
A better line with this. Has he
overplayed it though? Will it hold | 3:29:18 | 3:29:24
off? Actually that weight is very
good to play. Just missed the line | 3:29:24 | 3:29:29
slightly, John. But that's a lovely
weight to play the shot. Paul Foster | 3:29:29 | 3:29:35
has to be through with this because
he won't want that green bowl going | 3:29:35 | 3:29:38
on to the jack and making a three.
Yeah, it is a case that Lea maybe | 3:29:38 | 3:29:43
tempted to play firmer with his last
bowl for that type of shot. Well, | 3:29:43 | 3:29:48
Paul has seen the danger and he knew
he had to be there. It might still | 3:29:48 | 3:29:51
be worth it actually. I thinkits
still worth it. -- I think it's | 3:29:51 | 3:29:58
still worth it. | 3:29:58 | 3:30:04
It's close to the second, isn't it?
Very close. Not a lot in that. It is | 3:30:04 | 3:30:11
a bit like my front room. You have
got a new front room, you're happy! | 3:30:11 | 3:30:17
Now, will he play a touch firmer or
same solid delivery? Same sort of | 3:30:17 | 3:30:23
weight perhaps and roll into the
green? He looks like he has narrowed | 3:30:23 | 3:30:29
it slightly. Will he get back in
time? | 3:30:29 | 3:30:35 | |
Very close, wasn't it? | 3:30:35 | 3:30:41
Definitely one red. Measure for the
second. | 3:30:42 | 3:30:47
You can see the club shirts are
being worn. | 3:30:53 | 3:31:05
This is a tricky little measure this
one. These are very accurate. Red | 3:31:24 | 3:31:34
against the two green. | 3:31:34 | 3:31:42
Take that one away, that's not in,
it's this other one that's in | 3:31:45 | 3:31:49
question. Yes. Looks like two. Good
call from the measurer. Two shots, | 3:31:49 | 3:31:59
Paul Foster.
APPLAUSE. | 3:31:59 | 3:32:05
Always like to see the calipers
coming out, John, because they're so | 3:32:05 | 3:32:11
accurate. | 3:32:11 | 3:32:20
He's edging in front in the set,
Paul, 7-4. The mat out once again. | 3:32:20 | 3:32:34
It's a default position for Paul
Foster if things aren't going well. | 3:32:34 | 3:32:40
He'll play a short jack length. | 3:32:40 | 3:32:50
A lot of people might think it's
easier because it's short, but it's | 3:32:54 | 3:32:58
quite the opposite. Yes. The control
of the wait on the line. | 3:32:58 | 3:33:09
Not quite so comfortable at this
length. | 3:33:13 | 3:33:20
Need to run, Paul. That's better but
only slightly. Still a chance here | 3:33:21 | 3:33:26
for Lea. Needs to get the bowl on a
good line knew. -- now. From Paul's | 3:33:26 | 3:33:34
standards, that's a long way away. | 3:33:34 | 3:33:43
Bending to the jack from there.
That's good. Just given too many | 3:34:05 | 3:34:10
chances, really. Chance for the
second bowl to make it difficult for | 3:34:10 | 3:34:15
Paul. | 3:34:15 | 3:34:21 | |
Paul. Missed it. Third bowl for Paul
to get close. It's certainly on a | 3:34:21 | 3:34:30
narrow line. Too tight. Yes. I think
he was looking at the gap, it was | 3:34:30 | 3:34:37
never easy to control down there
with the short bowl in the way. A | 3:34:37 | 3:34:41
bit extra weight needed. | 3:34:41 | 3:34:51
bit extra weight needed. They're
always difficult shots aren't they? | 3:34:51 | 3:34:53
They are, very difficult to judge.
Paul's got cover here at the same | 3:34:53 | 3:34:58
time as that. If I was Lea, I would
be tempted to run this a little | 3:34:58 | 3:35:01
quicker. He could draw the shot.
It's not an easy draw. The forehand | 3:35:01 | 3:35:06
is dodgy. The back hand is blocked.
Could do worse than to play through | 3:35:06 | 3:35:12
it. The front plant looks like it's
going on to it. | 3:35:12 | 3:35:16
Just inside the line...
Two shots, Paul Foster. A bit of a | 3:35:48 | 3:35:54
loose head. That's what Paul Foster
was trying to achieve. He wanted to | 3:35:54 | 3:36:02
loosen off. That's what's happened.
Now he's in a strong position, 9-4 | 3:36:02 | 3:36:07
with three ends to go. | 3:36:07 | 3:36:10
Paul would have been used to playing
in the pairs and mixed pairs | 3:36:30 | 3:36:34
competition and had a lot of bowls
on the carpet as well. That would | 3:36:34 | 3:36:40
have added to his obvious advantage
of playing in the portable rink for | 3:36:40 | 3:36:44
over 20 years. | 3:36:44 | 3:36:54
How many times have you seen
practises and then the bowls come | 3:36:58 | 3:37:04
out and are thrown all over the
park. | 3:37:04 | 3:37:14 | |
Lea's lost his length as well. | 3:37:18 | 3:37:23
APPLAUSE. | 3:37:23 | 3:37:31
Attacking early. To me that was the
right shot to play. Open it up. Paul | 3:37:41 | 3:37:55
will be aware of the fact that even
if he picks up a single here, he's | 3:37:55 | 3:38:00
still in full control. The like that
N one. No. If it beats the green, | 3:38:00 | 3:38:12
and it has, it means it's the
shorter of the two bowls that go | 3:38:12 | 3:38:16
out. | 3:38:16 | 3:38:22 | |
out. He's fighting with himself with
a bit of turmoil out there. Going | 3:38:22 | 3:38:28
again. He's close this time. | 3:38:28 | 3:38:40
Two red. Go deep. | 3:38:47 | 3:38:58
My goodness me. To lose the bowl! A
puff of the cheeks. Can't blame you, | 3:39:10 | 3:39:17
Paul. | 3:39:17 | 3:39:24 | |
Paul. Back in the ditch. And again.
Oh, dear, oh, dear. That was | 3:39:24 | 3:39:30
unlucky. A smile from Lea but my
goodness that was unlucky. Very | 3:39:30 | 3:39:35
difficult to do that. | 3:39:35 | 3:39:40
difficult to do that. Paul Foster in
an 11-4 lead. We'll move on to the | 3:39:40 | 3:39:44
red button in a couple of minutes.
You can join us there. A fascinating | 3:39:44 | 3:39:50
game which looks as though it will
go to a tie-break. | 3:39:50 | 3:39:58
go to a tie-break. We should see
this end out. Four minutes or so | 3:40:02 | 3:40:06
left on BBC Two. So we expect a
tie-break to be on the red button. | 3:40:06 | 3:40:21
Just running through with the first
bowl. To be fair, he could easily | 3:40:49 | 3:40:57
have come off the red bowl and
buried the jack. Yes and he had to | 3:40:57 | 3:41:01
play the two drives. He was
unfortunate to get the gap. | 3:41:01 | 3:41:08
unfortunate to get the gap. He'll be
thinking about the tie-break. It's | 3:41:09 | 3:41:11
probably impossible to get back in
this set. | 3:41:11 | 3:41:18
Paul would have to come back big
time and I don't think that is | 3:41:23 | 3:41:26
possible. | 3:41:26 | 3:41:31
You wonder if it meant to a
tie-break, Paul might hope to win | 3:41:42 | 3:41:46
the toss and keep the length of the
jack. It might be a vital jack | 3:41:46 | 3:41:49
length. I think it is because the
longer jack length is certainly | 3:41:49 | 3:41:54
suiting Lee. See said it from the
beginning how long would it take | 3:41:54 | 3:41:59
before Paul Foster got to the short
jack length and it's proven to be | 3:41:59 | 3:42:03
valuable for him. No doubt about
that. Picked most of the shots up on | 3:42:03 | 3:42:09
this length. | 3:42:09 | 3:42:14
this length. At this length, it's
unusual to be this far away. Doesn't | 3:42:14 | 3:42:19
want to lose a three here. He wants
to get into the tie-break. | 3:42:19 | 3:42:29
That should be enough to take us
into the tie-break. | 3:42:47 | 3:42:54
This will be a practise bowl. | 3:42:54 | 3:43:02
Just underneath. Paul Foster. Takes
out the single. Takes the second | 3:43:05 | 3:43:12
set. 12-4. And we are into the three
end tie-break. | 3:43:12 | 3:43:18
We thought it was going to go this
way. | 3:43:22 | 3:43:30 | |
12-4. It will be a fascinating three
end. | 3:43:30 | 3:43:40 | |
We are going to make way for the
Australian Open highlights here on | 3:43:45 | 3:43:49
BBC Two. If you want to stay with
the bowls, press red and see the | 3:43:49 | 3:43:52
conclusion of this match between the
defending champion Paul Foster and | 3:43:52 | 3:43:57
Lea Blackham in this tie-break. | 3:43:57 | 3:43:59 |
