Hello and welcome to the east coast
of England for the 40th edition of | 0:00:33 | 0:00:40
the world Indoor Bowls Championship.
It is the 20th time it has been held | 0:00:40 | 0:00:49
at the Potters Resort. Today it is
semi-final days. # I'm so excited | 0:00:49 | 0:01:00
and I just can't hide it. # I'm
about to lose control and I think I | 0:01:00 | 0:01:07
like it! Can he fall in? Yes, that
was an amazing last bowl. It is | 0:01:07 | 0:01:18
Oliver, the youngest ever world
singles champion. No it is not a | 0:01:18 | 0:01:25
kangaroo! He is going to strike that
bowl off for the Championship. Got | 0:01:25 | 0:01:29
it! | 0:01:29 | 0:01:36 | |
. Paul Foster. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
# I'm so excited! # I'm about to
lose control and I think I like it! | 0:01:47 | 0:01:57
# I'm so excited. So many great
players, so many great memories. But | 0:01:57 | 0:02:03
it is time for a new chapter as we
look ahead to today's semi-finals | 0:02:03 | 0:02:09
here are the four players left with
a chance of getting their hands on | 0:02:09 | 0:02:15
the most coveted trophy in the
sport. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
Let's start with the first
semi-final, which took place this | 0:02:27 | 0:02:33
morning when Darren Burnett squared
off against the Mark Dawes. In their | 0:02:33 | 0:02:41
three previous meetings, Dawes had
won each time against Burnett. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:46
Dawes had already progressed further
than he had done before in the | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
world's singles. Bettering his Round
2 loss in 2016 and he got off to the | 0:02:53 | 0:02:58
fastest start. This for a double and
a 4-1 lead. Burnett clawed his way | 0:02:58 | 0:03:05
back. With Dawes lying 2, Burnett
had no choice but to take on this | 0:03:05 | 0:03:11
drive with his last. But he only
managed to increase the damage and | 0:03:11 | 0:03:16
lost the triple. Burnett couldn't
save the first set and his woes were | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
getting worse in the second as he
started to show signs of a back | 0:03:20 | 0:03:26
problem. Dawes was in commanding
form, winning four ends in a troe | 0:03:26 | 0:03:31
build a very healthy 7-2 lead,
including this in the 5th after | 0:03:31 | 0:03:38
Burnett was threatening a fight
back. Just when Burnett looked to be | 0:03:38 | 0:03:44
down and out, he produced the shot
of the match to gie himself hope. -- | 0:03:44 | 0:03:51
give himself hope. And the door had
been opened. Dawes slammed it shut | 0:03:51 | 0:03:57
again. Two beautiful shots put him
in an unassailable position. He goes | 0:03:57 | 0:04:03
through to his second final of the
week and the chance to add the world | 0:04:03 | 0:04:07
singles title to the pairs he won
with Jamie Chestney on Monday. Mark | 0:04:07 | 0:04:15
Dawes has had a great week and is
looking for a first ever final. This | 0:04:15 | 0:04:21
afternoon we have Robert Paxson and
Wayne Willgress still to come. John | 0:04:21 | 0:04:27
Pryce with is me. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
Wayne Willgress still to come. John
Pryce with is me. Some people may | 0:04:29 | 0:04:31
know this week you were sweet on the
chances of Mark Dawes. Yes, I | 0:04:31 | 0:04:38
fancied him, he is playing well and
he is playing good running bowls and | 0:04:38 | 0:04:42
sometimes you get a feel for a
player. People who have watched this | 0:04:42 | 0:04:47
match may not realise he has played
like that since he arrived here. Yes | 0:04:47 | 0:04:52
his form is good. He looks
confident, mature and he is doing | 0:04:52 | 0:04:56
well. You say confident and mature,
because he has always had the | 0:04:56 | 0:05:04
talent, up stairs are where things
have changed. Yes he feels at home | 0:05:04 | 0:05:09
on the rink, the surroundings are
good and he is in good shape. I | 0:05:09 | 0:05:14
mentioned that Darren Burnett had a
back injury and also after the match | 0:05:14 | 0:05:18
I spoke to Mark and he said
sometimes that can be awkward to | 0:05:18 | 0:05:24
deal with. Yes a back injury is
difficult. He didn't make an excuse. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:30
But you could see he was in pain.
For Mark you're keeping an eye on | 0:05:30 | 0:05:37
the other person. Yes, Mark just
played his own game. You have to | 0:05:37 | 0:05:42
shut that off and did the
professional job. Now let's switch | 0:05:42 | 0:05:47
to the second semi-final to find out
who Mark will play tomorrow. This is | 0:05:47 | 0:05:52
the route that Robert Paxton and
Wayne Willgress have had. | 0:05:52 | 0:06:00
Yesterday, Wayne was involved in up
with of the most extraordinary | 0:06:10 | 0:06:12
matches we have seen here at
potters. Dope Deep into the second | 0:06:12 | 0:06:19
set he looked down and out. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:22
potters. Dope Deep into the second
set he looked down and out. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:25
COMMENTATOR: The Wayne fan club down
there, but unfortunately today there | 0:06:25 | 0:06:29
hasn't been a lot to shout about. If
you're not playing well, you might | 0:06:29 | 0:06:33
as well not be there, they can't
cheer anything when I'm playing all | 0:06:33 | 0:06:38
over. Once you start putting things
close, they get involved and that is | 0:06:38 | 0:06:42
the killer. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:47
The wildcard needs a miracle. I had
given up. He is the best players. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:59
Here he goes. Has he missed it? It
is going to get there. Surely he | 0:06:59 | 0:07:12
will draw this time. He had five
foot to kill me. He is edgy. I don't | 0:07:12 | 0:07:18
believe it, he is short. I don't
believe it. Somehow he didn't. Even | 0:07:18 | 0:07:25
the best feel the pressure I guess.
It is game on now. Tie-break. He has | 0:07:25 | 0:07:32
got it. The jack's gone. I can't say
at any point I thought I was going | 0:07:32 | 0:07:42
to win. A slight touch. I felt the
odd bowl was good. But under the | 0:07:42 | 0:07:49
circumstances that has to be the
best bowl and the bowl to win. Such | 0:07:49 | 0:07:53
a difficult shot. This is very close
to it. Oh, he has played it. I'm | 0:07:53 | 0:08:01
living the dream at the minute and I
think I have got to keep living and | 0:08:01 | 0:08:06
keep going and playing bowls at the
right time and trying to forget | 0:08:06 | 0:08:09
everything else going on around me.
Work whatever else. You have got to | 0:08:09 | 0:08:13
focus on the bowls and give it your
all and cross your fingers. Good | 0:08:13 | 0:08:18
player. Got a good all round year.
He is one of men to beat. He knows | 0:08:18 | 0:08:25
how to win. Good player. Semis is
always one of the best games, but it | 0:08:25 | 0:08:32
is the hardest one to lose. You're
so close to the final. It is | 0:08:32 | 0:08:37
heartbreak. Playing Wayne, he has
the wildcard here, but he is a world | 0:08:37 | 0:08:41
semi-finalist. He has deserved his
place here. So I have got to respect | 0:08:41 | 0:08:48
the way he plays. That is why he is
in the competition still. I have got | 0:08:48 | 0:08:52
to try and put him under pressure
and hopefully that is enough today. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:57
It is the biggest title you can win
in bowls, coming here is what every | 0:08:57 | 0:09:03
player wants to do. A very excited
atmosphere in here, because Wayne | 0:09:03 | 0:09:09
Willgress has caused a stir with his
support and his two come back | 0:09:09 | 0:09:13
victories. | 0:09:13 | 0:09:15
support and his two come back
victories. Amazing finish yesterday. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:19
Greg thought he was over the line.
Wayne will think he got out of jail. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:23
He took the opportunity in the
tie-break. Wayne should be playing a | 0:09:23 | 0:09:28
county league match today. I have a
feeling he won't make that. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:34
Yesterday, he was very emotional.
How difficult is it to get back down | 0:09:34 | 0:09:39
from that to get yourself up for
that. Today he will look at it. Half | 0:09:39 | 0:09:43
way through game yesterday he had no
chance. He is here now and I think | 0:09:43 | 0:09:47
he will be up for this. So will
Robert Paxton. He has that steely | 0:09:47 | 0:09:52
determination? Yes he will want to
win. He has lost a time before. He | 0:09:52 | 0:09:57
is on a roll and he will feel
confident and he is the favourite. | 0:09:57 | 0:10:01
Can you see Wayne Willgress doing
something like this again? Very | 0:10:01 | 0:10:06
possibly. It is a 50/50 game. World
semi, crowd behind him. It is 50/50. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:17
MC Richard Bear is standing by. A
warm good afternoon to you. Like the | 0:10:19 | 0:10:24
song at the top of today's
programme, we're all so excited. Who | 0:10:24 | 0:10:29
is going to go through and face Mark
Dawes tomorrow? We are about to find | 0:10:29 | 0:10:33
out. First of all, what an amazing
tournament this local qualifier is | 0:10:33 | 0:10:39
having after taking out the world No
1 Greg Harlow to earn himself in | 0:10:39 | 0:10:45
this semi-final. The question is -
can he now go all the way. Ladies | 0:10:45 | 0:10:52
and gentlemen, Wayne Willgress. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:59
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:09
And this world No 6 has had a
fruitful few seasons. The 2016 world | 0:11:18 | 0:11:27
indoor singles finalist and former
Scottish International Open | 0:11:27 | 0:11:31
champion, your appreciation play for
Robert Paxton. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:38
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:45
There is a fantastic atmosphere. You
can have your way on Twitter. Let's | 0:11:53 | 0:12:02
join John Price and David Corkhill. | 0:12:02 | 0:12:10
COMMENTATOR: What an exciting moment
for this young man. Given a wildcard | 0:12:10 | 0:12:15
on the back of some very good
performances. My goodness me what an | 0:12:15 | 0:12:23
upset he has caused this year. Match
after match against world champions. | 0:12:23 | 0:12:29
They have been dispatched. | 0:12:29 | 0:12:31
Against Stuart Anderson he played
well the whole match and still had | 0:12:40 | 0:12:44
to come through with big scores
towards the end. Stuart looked to be | 0:12:44 | 0:12:49
in control. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:52
It is fair to say, John, Greg Harlow
looked to be in control for most of | 0:12:54 | 0:13:00
his game until the last end of the
second set. Yes, definitely Greg | 0:13:00 | 0:13:08
will feel that very difficult to say
what he did wrong. He played well. A | 0:13:08 | 0:13:16
problem with line and length just
fell away. He settles down into this | 0:13:16 | 0:13:25
backhand, trying to drop a bit of
the width. Try and get the ball back | 0:13:25 | 0:13:31
inside. Be interesting just to see
how it goes with regards to getting | 0:13:31 | 0:13:37
off the line a bit quicker. I think
he knows that he needs to get out | 0:13:37 | 0:13:42
the blocks better. Because this
man's a very determined player, | 0:13:42 | 0:13:46
Robert Paxton. | 0:13:46 | 0:13:48
Just over the line. | 0:13:58 | 0:14:05
A bit of a wins, he wasn't sure. --
wince. | 0:14:09 | 0:14:18
Starting to come now. That is good
bowling. There is a lot of support | 0:14:18 | 0:14:25
out there for the local man,
Willgress. Robert Paxton would | 0:14:25 | 0:14:31
normally play into this with weight. | 0:14:31 | 0:14:38
It is a struggle on this. I thought
he might have played that as a bit | 0:14:48 | 0:14:53
of runner. Didn't expect him not to
reach. | 0:14:53 | 0:15:03
Wayne moving to the forehand to try
and cover the red balls. He wants to | 0:15:11 | 0:15:16
get in front of him if he can. And
he has. Two shots first there. | 0:15:16 | 0:15:28
Still expect Robert to get at least
second. | 0:15:33 | 0:15:36
Very close, Robert Paxton. Very
close. He is going to draw the No 1 | 0:15:40 | 0:15:44
with this. It is a great recovery
bowl. He managed to get the shot. He | 0:15:44 | 0:15:54
did that on the first end. | 0:15:54 | 0:15:57
REFEREE: Jack length 29 and a half
metres. | 0:16:25 | 0:16:29
These matches over 9 ends. The first
two sets. That will extend to 11 in | 0:16:39 | 0:16:45
the final. A tee-break if needed.
There is no accumulated shots. You | 0:16:45 | 0:16:52
can lose by 12 nil and win the next
one by one shot and still go in | 0:16:52 | 0:16:57
level. Too many battles really. | 0:16:57 | 0:17:02
Ball of Wayne Estry 's going to be
cheered. | 0:17:05 | 0:17:12
REFEREE: 10 inch gap. The ball's
five inch diameter, so ten inches - | 0:17:36 | 0:17:50
plenty of room. He will probably
pull through this. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:59
Not the best bowl. | 0:17:59 | 0:18:02
Paxton third bowl. Struggling with
that as well. He is going to be | 0:18:15 | 0:18:22
looking for another recovery bowl.
The last bowl. He hasn't started | 0:18:22 | 0:18:29
well. | 0:18:29 | 0:18:31 | |
Another good chaps for Wayne
Willgress. -- chance. | 0:18:35 | 0:18:42
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE. | 0:18:49 | 0:18:53
He got through that by a foot. Those
folks are out to enjoy themselves | 0:18:53 | 0:18:58
today. | 0:18:58 | 0:19:02
Well, he is on a line. All about
weight from there. He has done it | 0:19:13 | 0:19:18
again. Two big last bowls. The crowd
react to that. It was a superb | 0:19:18 | 0:19:26
delivery. But he want to dipping too
much into that well of good bowls. | 0:19:26 | 0:19:31
He wants to be on the front foot and
not playing recovery all the time. | 0:19:31 | 0:19:39
Rebecca Field, Wayne Willgress's
partner. He is looking for the bowl, | 0:19:49 | 0:19:52
he must be able to see it. | 0:19:52 | 0:19:56
It is two 3s that have been snatched
off him by Robert Paxton's last | 0:20:01 | 0:20:06
bowls. | 0:20:06 | 0:20:10
It is typical of a true champion,
you get outplayed in the two ends, | 0:20:19 | 0:20:26
you get in many ways, you weather
the storm to get in front and hope | 0:20:26 | 0:20:32
that your own general play at the
first two deliveries gets better. He | 0:20:32 | 0:20:37
found a good bowl the last delivery
on both ends. That scoreboard could | 0:20:37 | 0:20:43
have looked a lot worse. Although he
will need to get in with the fist | 0:20:43 | 0:20:48
two bowls. Wayne has started better
today than he did yesterday. | 0:20:48 | 0:20:58
Better start by Rob Paxton. | 0:21:00 | 0:21:08
Looks a lot more like it from
Robert. | 0:21:49 | 0:21:59
You could hear them shouting hurry
there from about four yards away. | 0:22:12 | 0:22:18
Yes, they were urging that ball in.
Always looked good. Just about made | 0:22:18 | 0:22:23
it in the end. | 0:22:23 | 0:22:27
Robert, worth playing into this. He
has the front bowls to hit to take | 0:22:36 | 0:22:41
the green bowl out. Under it. | 0:22:41 | 0:22:54
I wonder about Wayne. He needs a
deep bowl. He will play for that | 0:22:55 | 0:23:01
plant again. He could do worse than
play the forehand, try and tuck his | 0:23:01 | 0:23:06
own bowl in. That reduces the
target. If he misses that, then he | 0:23:06 | 0:23:11
gets into his second position -
deep. | 0:23:11 | 0:23:17 | |
That is what he's playing. That is a
good bowl. That really is a good | 0:23:17 | 0:23:27
bowl for lots of reason, because it
also stops the | 0:23:27 | 0:23:36
also stops the red ball coming
through. Only one shot in this. | 0:23:36 | 0:23:41
Could be dangerous for Robert Paxton
to attack it. | 0:23:41 | 0:23:45
On the backhand just trying to draw
in. | 0:23:51 | 0:23:55 | |
No position deep of the jack. Now,
Wayne, can you just play something | 0:23:56 | 0:24:06
similar, tap your bowl or get inside
the jack for 3? | 0:24:06 | 0:24:12
A bit of work to get back inside.
But he might get his own. Oh, that | 0:24:34 | 0:24:40
was the right idea. | 0:24:40 | 0:24:45
was the right idea. REFEREE: One
shot, Wayne Willgress. | 0:24:45 | 0:24:51
shot, Wayne Willgress. Set score 2-1
after three ends. | 0:24:52 | 0:24:55
Will he has seen the shots. That is
the thing. He is able to see the | 0:25:03 | 0:25:08
shots and identify them early. | 0:25:08 | 0:25:13
REFEREE: Jack length 27 and a half
metres. | 0:25:19 | 0:25:29
Great to have the home support. No
doubt about that. But with that come | 0:25:47 | 0:25:52
ascertain level of expectation. It
is not always easy. | 0:25:52 | 0:25:59
APPLAUSE. | 0:26:05 | 0:26:14
A very good opener from Paxton. That
is the sort of bowl he is looking | 0:26:14 | 0:26:20
for to put Wayne under a bit of
pressure. | 0:26:20 | 0:26:31
Robert will check the gap here I
think. He has been able to see it | 0:26:35 | 0:26:41
from the monitor at the side of the
rink. He gets a good shot of the | 0:26:41 | 0:26:46
overhead. Three inches away. So he
can play this with confidence. He | 0:26:46 | 0:26:51
can afford to reach it. Had it been
an inch away it would have been | 0:26:51 | 0:26:57
dangerous. | 0:26:57 | 0:27:05
That is a good effort. Good weight
again. Yes, a bit of a change in the | 0:27:23 | 0:27:31
line and we have been getting lots
of questions in. | 0:27:31 | 0:27:34
We have a lot of non--bowlers
watching. That is on hashtag BBC | 0:27:36 | 0:27:45
bowls if you need to know anything.
Patch it through to us and we will | 0:27:45 | 0:27:50
do your best to answer your
questions. You know, you will get | 0:27:50 | 0:27:54
the hard ones, John, so that's OK.
That is typical of you. Passing the | 0:27:54 | 0:27:59
buck. I have got the rule book, but
I have to pass it on to you. He has | 0:27:59 | 0:28:05
got that. | 0:28:05 | 0:28:10
He stayed central there. No catch
there for Wayne. | 0:28:14 | 0:28:18
I think we don't need to know this
one's going to miss the way he threw | 0:28:27 | 0:28:33
his cloth up! I think it's very
close. There we go. Body language | 0:28:33 | 0:28:42
said, I missed it. Look at the
reaction of the crowd! The body | 0:28:42 | 0:28:48
language, the cloth in the air said
everything about that bowl - I have | 0:28:48 | 0:28:54
missed it by a margin and he draws
the shot around the corner! Oh dear, | 0:28:54 | 0:28:59
oh dear. A bit of a worry if he
didn't know it was close. Doesn't | 0:28:59 | 0:29:04
matter if he gets a result like that
every time. Somebody up stairs is | 0:29:04 | 0:29:09
looking after him. | 0:29:09 | 0:29:12
Robert how close are you to this
jack? Doesn't need the bowl. Oh, | 0:29:22 | 0:29:26
well... Hmm! One to red. | 0:29:26 | 0:29:35
It has been exciting already for
lots of different reasons. You have | 0:29:48 | 0:29:53
got to say that any game with Wayne,
something's going to happen! It is | 0:29:53 | 0:30:00
highly entertaining. The crowd with
him or not, he is just highly | 0:30:00 | 0:30:05
entertaining the way he plays the
game. REFEREE: Jack length 29 | 0:30:05 | 0:30:10
metres. | 0:30:10 | 0:30:12
Bowles is a very big sport for young
people. They roll mat out and pay | 0:30:28 | 0:30:36
bowls on it. In halls and
gymnasiums. In parts of Wales, the | 0:30:36 | 0:30:51
short mat is very popular. Massive
in Northern Ireland. Tens of | 0:30:51 | 0:30:58
thousands. My own club in Belfast
would post some of their events. My | 0:30:58 | 0:31:08
goodness me, they'd turn up in their
droves. Especially the young ones. A | 0:31:08 | 0:31:16
good introduction to playing through
onto the longer mat and also on the | 0:31:16 | 0:31:22
outdoor. But they have their own
representative. The teams at | 0:31:22 | 0:31:29
international level. Robert getting
in there, the first two bowls. Just | 0:31:29 | 0:31:37
signs of Robert coming into playing
a good game. He is 3-1 in front when | 0:31:37 | 0:31:43
he is doing it. He weathered the
storm in the first two ends. Some | 0:31:43 | 0:31:49
good carry by Wayne. It just ran
away. Bit of excitement in the | 0:31:49 | 0:31:56
crowd. The bowl dropped back. Robert
will see if he can turn the jack | 0:31:56 | 0:32:06
around the corner and consolidate
the position. | 0:32:06 | 0:32:18
the position. He is making the gap.
What a place he is going to! That is | 0:32:18 | 0:32:23
very good will | 0:32:23 | 0:32:28
very good will stop He played with
very good weight. Did not get the | 0:32:30 | 0:32:34
jack. He is finishing in a very good
place. | 0:32:34 | 0:32:42
Can he run? That was brilliant,
absolutely brilliant. That is so | 0:32:47 | 0:32:58
hard to do. | 0:32:58 | 0:33:03
hard to do. This is a long jack.
Incredible accuracy in delivering | 0:33:07 | 0:33:12
these bowls. | 0:33:12 | 0:33:21
Now, Robert, can you turn the jack
for three or four? Looks under. It | 0:33:21 | 0:33:30
is under the line. The wait was very
good. Just missed the line by a bowl | 0:33:30 | 0:33:36
or two. We have to be very careful.
Now it really would be impressive to | 0:33:36 | 0:33:47
add another one. He must be a little
careful. | 0:33:47 | 0:33:54
careful. It is going to be a little
bit delicate. | 0:33:54 | 0:34:06
They are asking how this is. He has
to be careful. I must say he did | 0:34:08 | 0:34:14
give it a go. That is a good one to
take. A good bowl from Wayne. | 0:34:14 | 0:34:25
It is a fall house here. We thought
this would happen. Always very | 0:34:42 | 0:34:48
popular in the semifinals but
particularly dismantle the PA has | 0:34:48 | 0:34:52
just about held on to the jack. Drop
sit in the ditch and the jack goes | 0:34:52 | 0:34:59
back. The opposition gets the chance
to deliver it to his length. -- | 0:34:59 | 0:35:08
drops it in the ditch. | 0:35:08 | 0:35:09
This looks good. He has made the
adjustment. | 0:36:07 | 0:36:16
They young supporters from his local
club in Norfolk. They are here to | 0:36:18 | 0:36:23
enjoy themselves, aren't they? He
needs to play plenty of good bowls. | 0:36:23 | 0:36:30
Get the crowd worked up. A noisy
crowd went get them on his side. | 0:36:30 | 0:36:35
That was a good effort by Robert.
Just past. He has that advantage. He | 0:36:35 | 0:36:44
can play really well. Worth another
five shots I would think. | 0:36:44 | 0:36:52
five shots I would think. It is
within seven inches of the jack and | 0:36:53 | 0:36:55
it barely got a murmur. It is a
tough crowd out there, isn't it? | 0:36:55 | 0:37:02
Wayne on the forehand again trying
to get to the rent, if you can. | 0:37:02 | 0:37:09
Gentle, gentle. That is a good bowl.
Again, the bowls of finding centre | 0:37:09 | 0:37:22
rink and picking out the line very
well. The line is affected in many | 0:37:22 | 0:37:28
different ways. Players go looking
for sight lines. That is where you | 0:37:28 | 0:37:32
stand on Burnham mat. It has a
massive effect on how a bowl is | 0:37:32 | 0:37:40
going to bend. -- stand on the mat.
Inside line, a little bit of weight. | 0:37:40 | 0:37:47
He needs to be lucky. Oh, he is. Oh,
dear, oh dear four. That was a long | 0:37:47 | 0:37:54
way away for him to be hitting. | 0:37:54 | 0:38:00
way away for him to be hitting. Very
fortunate then, Robert. A bit of | 0:38:01 | 0:38:05
movement on the jack. | 0:38:05 | 0:38:11
movement on the jack. Well,
acknowledgement to the opposition. | 0:38:12 | 0:38:15
Always good to see. It is not
particularly easy. He could play it | 0:38:15 | 0:38:23
on to his own bowl. He can trail the
jack. 40 yards or so. He is looking | 0:38:23 | 0:38:31
at it. There is danger if he wings
off the bowl on the inside. Offers | 0:38:31 | 0:38:36
up a chance for a three foot at the
moment he is only one down. Does not | 0:38:36 | 0:38:42
want to be losing three shots in the
middle of the set. He has the open | 0:38:42 | 0:38:47
draw. That is what he will play. He
is forcing it off the forehand. This | 0:38:47 | 0:38:54
is risky, really risky. He might
have got away with it. Only to the | 0:38:54 | 0:39:03
point where it was the single. It
has gone off the rink. I didn't | 0:39:03 | 0:39:10
think he would have played that
quite as firmly as that. A bit more | 0:39:10 | 0:39:16
control and he could easily have got
the jack on the backhand side. If he | 0:39:16 | 0:39:22
drops a single it would not be too
bad. Over 26 and a half metres, | 0:39:22 | 0:39:29
Roberts will be able to draw this
without too much trouble. -- Robert. | 0:39:29 | 0:39:43
1-shot, Robert Paxton. That was not
close but it was enough. | 0:39:46 | 0:39:57
close but it was enough. Single
shots all the way. A tight game, we | 0:39:57 | 0:40:00
thought it might be very tight.
Paxton being two in front, he will | 0:40:00 | 0:40:09
be delighted considering how the
first set has been going. | 0:40:09 | 0:40:16
first set has been going. Both
players will play an aggressive | 0:40:18 | 0:40:20
game. Quite prepared | 0:40:20 | 0:40:27
game. Quite prepared to play weight
on the second bowl if they need to. | 0:40:27 | 0:40:32
A few fireworks. They are both
aggressive players and will go | 0:40:32 | 0:40:36
forward different kinds of shops. | 0:40:36 | 0:40:42
forward different kinds of shops. --
and will go for different kinds of | 0:40:44 | 0:40:52
shots. | 0:40:54 | 0:40:59
That is OK at the moment. Robert
Paxton is two shots in front and he | 0:41:10 | 0:41:16
is playing well enough. If you are
three, four shots down, things start | 0:41:16 | 0:41:25
to go wrong, all of a sudden there
could be a major influence in the | 0:41:25 | 0:41:28
match. | 0:41:28 | 0:41:36
match. He needs to chop back off the
red. | 0:41:36 | 0:41:44 | |
red. Robert Paxton is playing good
bowls. | 0:41:45 | 0:41:51
bowls. That is the way to keep home
support just a little bits of Jude. | 0:41:53 | 0:41:59
-- sub | 0:41:59 | 0:42:09 | |
-- subdued. Needs to come rolling
off the back one. A good shoulder. | 0:42:11 | 0:42:17
He moves the red. | 0:42:17 | 0:42:26
He can afford to reach this. No
point in being short to it. The shot | 0:43:07 | 0:43:13
against. It needs to hurry. Always
under it. That is surprisingly goes | 0:43:13 | 0:43:20
everything was in his favour to
arrive at that. He had a chance to | 0:43:20 | 0:43:26
split the green and turn the red
bowl away. | 0:43:26 | 0:43:29
Paxton will play forehand again. A
similar shot for him. Drawing into | 0:43:41 | 0:43:45
the green bowl. | 0:43:45 | 0:43:55
He is good again. It has just
dropped but he is close for another | 0:43:59 | 0:44:06
one. | 0:44:06 | 0:44:11 | |
Francis Fletcher is having a look.
Red bowl on the jack and every spot. | 0:44:19 | 0:44:26
I do not think he would be any worse
off if he comes under it. He could | 0:44:26 | 0:44:34
play that. He played the draw on the
backhand. That is a tough one. | 0:44:34 | 0:44:44
backhand. That is a tough one. Looks
like his weight. A big drive. | 0:44:45 | 0:44:55
like his weight. A big drive. A big
effort. Good hit. | 0:44:55 | 0:45:01
Looking at the second... A bit of a
fancy for the green but not a lot in | 0:45:07 | 0:45:16
it. | 0:45:16 | 0:45:21 | |
The umpire for this match will sort
it out. | 0:45:28 | 0:45:35
it out. They will give Robert a hard
time about that one. Yet his glasses | 0:45:37 | 0:45:43
out for that one. Has not been
eating his carrot stop the players | 0:45:43 | 0:45:50
are normally very good about looking
at measures. | 0:45:50 | 0:45:59
Most of these matches are taking
around 45 minutes. The guys are | 0:47:14 | 0:47:19
pretty much on schedule for that.
They are not messing about. 30 | 0:47:19 | 0:47:25
seconds to play the bowl after your
opponent's bowl has been delivered | 0:47:25 | 0:47:30
and stopped. Keeps moving on. | 0:47:30 | 0:47:36
and stopped. Keeps moving on. You
are right. It is about 45 minutes a | 0:47:37 | 0:47:41
set normally. A tad longer if you go
onto the tie-break. | 0:47:41 | 0:47:45
This needs to run. Oh, dear. The
overcorrection. He took two yards | 0:47:52 | 0:48:05
off. | 0:48:05 | 0:48:10 | |
Not too much on the jack. | 0:48:33 | 0:48:44
Wayne might still play the backhand
draw. He prefers this side. He has | 0:48:52 | 0:48:58
played some really good bowls. We
notice this last night when he moved | 0:48:58 | 0:49:03
across. A slight danger moving
forward. Will he get back in time? | 0:49:03 | 0:49:10
Not quite. He will not want it to go
to the last N. Four down. -- the | 0:49:10 | 0:49:20
last end. | 0:49:20 | 0:49:21
A similar line to Wayne. Conscious
he needs another one in. Trying to | 0:49:46 | 0:49:55
close the set down. It stops any
shot, trying to flick out the red | 0:49:55 | 0:50:04
bowl. There is a shot on the
forehand to drag the jack. He did | 0:50:04 | 0:50:10
want to switch on to the forehand
side were just over the draw. Pull | 0:50:10 | 0:50:15
the jack. He has to go for the jack
to try to get two out of this. The | 0:50:15 | 0:50:25
only thing he doesn't want to be as
short. He needs an edge. Dear me! So | 0:50:25 | 0:50:35
close. He has moved his own bowl, so
he will be looking to see if it is | 0:50:35 | 0:50:44
one or two. Wow! | 0:50:44 | 0:50:57
one or two. Wow! All single shots. A
big difference when you are lying | 0:50:57 | 0:51:01
four shots in front. Economic tab
the set in your pocket. We have seen | 0:51:01 | 0:51:12
that with Wayne before. -- you can
almost have the set in your pocket. | 0:51:12 | 0:51:19
He would have taken the start of the
match this afternoon when leading | 0:51:19 | 0:51:25
going into the last. He was
expecting a bit of a storm early on. | 0:51:25 | 0:51:31
It has been a fairly good
performance. A bit shaky in the | 0:51:31 | 0:51:37
first couple of ends but he has
settled in well he has control of | 0:51:37 | 0:51:41
the set will | 0:51:41 | 0:51:47
the set will -- control of the set.
The 29-year-old has been playing in | 0:51:52 | 0:52:02
this match now for 40 odd minutes
and only scored two shots. That is | 0:52:02 | 0:52:08
not really a reflection on this
match whatsoever. I think it would | 0:52:08 | 0:52:13
have been pretty close to level
going into this. Does not fit into | 0:52:13 | 0:52:18
Wayne's game plan. He likes to camp
the last 20, 25 minutes. -- he likes | 0:52:18 | 0:52:30
to come in the last 20, 25 minutes.
He has a cunning plan. | 0:52:30 | 0:52:36
He has scored three fours against
Stuart Anderson. That is not easy to | 0:52:46 | 0:52:52
do. Just dropping a bit short.
Another opportunity to get in. | 0:52:52 | 0:53:09
Trouble is every single bowl as to
be within a foot. Cannot afford to | 0:53:11 | 0:53:16
make a mistake. Is this going to
drop back? Yes, that is number two. | 0:53:16 | 0:53:27
They won't get excited unless Robert
misses this one. | 0:53:27 | 0:53:42
The Paxton forehand, looking to drop
on the back green. If he gets in | 0:53:42 | 0:53:52
their he will kill it. By Megahey is
close. Just needs to get a | 0:53:52 | 0:53:58
connection. That is it. All the
work. Fair play. A really good bowl. | 0:53:58 | 0:54:04
Well hidden. Very close. It does not
really matter about the shot. He | 0:54:04 | 0:54:18
will just have to put this one in
and hope he has something for the | 0:54:18 | 0:54:22
last bowl. | 0:54:22 | 0:54:27
last bowl. Once again, quality very
high. | 0:54:28 | 0:54:36 | |
high. That was a decent bowl. If it
is going to go anywhere, it will go | 0:54:38 | 0:54:42
out that side. | 0:54:42 | 0:54:53
As it stands, Wayne has a real
problem to get to the red bowl and | 0:54:53 | 0:54:58
remove it. Get there on the draw but
he will have to have a bit of weight | 0:54:58 | 0:55:03
to get that way. Not easy to get the
bowl to bend. | 0:55:03 | 0:55:10
bowl to bend. Rob is looking to just
get past that. This is a really good | 0:55:11 | 0:55:15
bowl. A clever bowl. Really good.
You could make one, possibly two. No | 0:55:15 | 0:55:26
chance to get a full house of four.
He accepts the way it is. | 0:55:26 | 0:55:38
He accepts the way it is. The face
tells it all. A shake of the head. | 0:55:41 | 0:55:46
He knows this set has gone. Yet.
Just a practice shot. He knew there | 0:55:46 | 0:55:53
was no chance. Just move on into the
second set. | 0:55:53 | 0:56:01
There was no chance to pick up one
shot, never mind four. | 0:56:08 | 0:56:17
Robert just said, one to green he
did not care. He was not concerned, | 0:56:32 | 0:56:38
was he? Gnome. The set in his
pocket. -- no. Also an indication of | 0:56:38 | 0:56:50
how good a game it has been. It has
been really top class stuff. Robert | 0:56:50 | 0:56:58
did not start well the first two
ends. He played two big bowls. That | 0:56:58 | 0:57:06
Robert Lee won him the set overall.
It was that close. | 0:57:06 | 0:57:14
The first bowls have been getting
better and better. | 0:57:25 | 0:57:32
That was a very good reply by him.
He needs to do that and tried to get | 0:57:40 | 0:57:50
some pressure on him. | 0:57:50 | 0:58:00
One green. Four inches second bowl. | 0:58:27 | 0:58:33
Is he trying again? Just needs to
run. That was so had he got past the | 0:58:47 | 0:58:55
red bowl it would have been
brilliant. In terms of how close it | 0:58:55 | 0:59:00
is to the jack, it is very good.
With the quality in this game, it | 0:59:00 | 0:59:06
will be very close with this one. | 0:59:06 | 0:59:12
He might have just got back the
shot. William was a foot away with | 0:59:42 | 0:59:49
his second bowl. In this sort of
game, it is just not enough. Robert | 0:59:49 | 0:59:57
will get in. Just making it weighed
down to seven seconds left. Plenty | 0:59:57 | 1:00:07
of time. Players do lose the bowl
occasionally but it is very rare. | 1:00:07 | 1:00:15
Will he drop in and get the bend at
the end is to mark nearly. Some | 1:00:15 | 1:00:22
decent place, really is. He will be
thinking what to play the next time. | 1:00:22 | 1:00:36
Going for cover, he is expecting
Wayne to play the forehand to push | 1:00:44 | 1:00:50
the green bowl on to the jack. | 1:00:50 | 1:00:53
He is short of it. We can play this
both sides. The trouble with the | 1:00:59 | 1:01:06
forehand is if you bowl on to the
red, the other red balls still | 1:01:06 | 1:01:09
score. Might be a better shot off
the backhand using his last bowl. | 1:01:09 | 1:01:15
Gets it solid or he comes off it he
could move the jack. He can be more | 1:01:15 | 1:01:20
aggressive on the backhand. It is
down to personal choice and how he | 1:01:20 | 1:01:24
feels. | 1:01:24 | 1:01:31
He is going more aggressive. It
depends, if that's gone off on to | 1:01:32 | 1:01:40
the re-spot he is good. If it is
held in the ditch he is probably two | 1:01:40 | 1:01:43
down. It is in the ditch. He thought
it was going to run across from the | 1:01:43 | 1:01:51
ditch and off the rink situation
that would have been a re-spot and | 1:01:51 | 1:01:55
he would have been sitting pretty
with one, maybe two. A bit unlucky | 1:01:55 | 1:02:01
with that one, John. He was hoping
when he hit them to plant in front | 1:02:01 | 1:02:06
the jack would have gone off the
back bowl out side ways. | 1:02:06 | 1:02:14
back bowl out side ways. We are all
looking forward to tomorrow's final. | 1:02:14 | 1:02:19
2.30 on BBC Two. | 1:02:19 | 1:02:23
Of course the winner of this match
will play Mark Dawes, a man into his | 1:02:27 | 1:02:35
first world tour bowls final. Mark
Dawes has already picked up one | 1:02:35 | 1:02:44
title this week - the pairs. | 1:02:44 | 1:02:50
What a performance that was, John?
Yes, he played at the top of his | 1:02:50 | 1:02:55
game and he will be hoping to do the
same tomorrow. I think one of these | 1:02:55 | 1:02:58
two men will have something to say
about that. Whatever happens of | 1:02:58 | 1:03:03
course we are going to have a new
winner, Dave. | 1:03:03 | 1:03:08
Mark Dawes did play extremely well. | 1:03:20 | 1:03:24
The problem Wayne's got he has a
tendency to play the odd lose end. | 1:04:16 | 1:04:23
Not losing them big scores. He is
not giving him any potential to put | 1:04:23 | 1:04:27
Robert under pressure. He needs to
get Robert out of his comfort zone. | 1:04:27 | 1:04:33
Yes he has got, not a free run, that
would be unfair, but this end's just | 1:04:33 | 1:04:39
loosened up a bit. The previous ends
have been very good. So important | 1:04:39 | 1:04:44
now to get this bowl close. | 1:04:44 | 1:04:48
Struggling with this one. | 1:04:52 | 1:04:59
You don't to be going for the lost
bowl heroic stuff. You want to build | 1:04:59 | 1:05:06
heads. Robert, all round good
player, it is not a matter of being | 1:05:06 | 1:05:14
a front run rp, we have seen him
come back from dire situations. But | 1:05:14 | 1:05:17
he is in a good position here. One
set in the bag, two shots up. | 1:05:17 | 1:05:29
That is enough, no 3. It is a big
pressure bowl early in the second | 1:05:35 | 1:05:42
set. | 1:05:42 | 1:05:44 | |
He has given this a bit more of a
look. Half a chance if he has got | 1:05:51 | 1:05:55
the run in. Certainly a lot closer.
Gentle, gentle on the jack. Oh, he | 1:05:55 | 1:06:01
has just pushed it into the red
bowl. But he has taken two off and | 1:06:01 | 1:06:06
that is a massive hope. On another
day he misses the jack and gets the | 1:06:06 | 1:06:10
shot. A good save in the end. | 1:06:10 | 1:06:16
REFEREE: Jack length 29 and a half
metres. | 1:06:45 | 1:06:52
metres. Players are both using the
same bowl, same model as well. Big | 1:06:52 | 1:07:01
bias. Very rarely you see a straight
bowl go bendy on these rinks. You | 1:07:01 | 1:07:15
want something that will bend back.
We have had an enquiry from one | 1:07:15 | 1:07:23
viewer asking about the grip of both
players. I think they're both using | 1:07:23 | 1:07:29
a claw grip, which is the thumb well
up the side of the bowl. That is | 1:07:29 | 1:07:33
more like it. More like Wayne with
the first bowl. | 1:07:33 | 1:07:41
REFEREE: 4 inch gap. The claw grip,
just right up on to the little | 1:07:45 | 1:07:54
dimples. The thumb comes down a bit,
known as the cradle grip. | 1:07:54 | 1:08:01
He has got a little spray because it
has moved the jack. If it goes into | 1:08:10 | 1:08:17
the ditch, it stays there, forms
part of the remainder of the end. | 1:08:17 | 1:08:23
That is another good bowl by Wayne.
This is what he needs to do. To do | 1:08:33 | 1:08:39
this over three or four ends and get
more pressure at Robert. | 1:08:39 | 1:08:44
Better by Rob Paxton. He needed that
one. Absolutely. I was looking at | 1:09:20 | 1:09:25
the picture showing the two bowls.
They were both using the same ones, | 1:09:25 | 1:09:29
but that was taken from elsewhere.
Wayne's actually using a different | 1:09:29 | 1:09:40
manufacture's bowls, but again it is
a big bias bowl. Always good to have | 1:09:40 | 1:09:47
the odd curve ball thrown in there,
John. Good again. | 1:09:47 | 1:09:56
John. Good again. That's getting
them going a bit now. That is what | 1:09:56 | 1:09:58
he needs. He needs to get this
coming back. He can feed off the | 1:09:58 | 1:10:05
energy of the crowd. He said in his
interview, you can't expect | 1:10:05 | 1:10:10
reactions if you're pushing the
bowls all around the park. They have | 1:10:10 | 1:10:13
to be in line. REFEREE: Rob has four
time-outs remaining. | 1:10:13 | 1:10:26
Gone for the hit. One out. Well...
If he is on target and hit one. | 1:10:52 | 1:11:03
The sort of shot that you need to
make. | 1:11:28 | 1:11:31 | |
Get in there. Missed the jack. Yes,
he got it. As soon as he missed the | 1:11:36 | 1:11:42
jack he was good. That is getting
them going again now. So Wayne's | 1:11:42 | 1:11:47
back in the set. | 1:11:47 | 1:11:53
His first 2 of the match. Just
missed the jack. A little touch | 1:12:02 | 1:12:10
back. Come on, he said, let's get
going! Big Wayne's on the march! | 1:12:10 | 1:12:26
REFEREE: Jack length 27 and a half
metres. | 1:12:30 | 1:12:36
The secret now is to try to play
back-to-back ends. If he can get a | 1:12:36 | 1:12:41
good start to this end, sets him up
for a chance. | 1:12:41 | 1:12:51
APPLAUSE. | 1:12:55 | 1:12:57
Rob will think if he can just stay
ahead. If Wayne gets ahead and the | 1:13:16 | 1:13:23
crowd gets Ott of their seats he is
in trouble. At the moment, he has | 1:13:23 | 1:13:26
been in the lead the whole way.
You're thinking what's going to | 1:13:26 | 1:13:30
happen if he's chasing it. | 1:13:30 | 1:13:34
He will do everything he can to just
keep ahead of Wayne in this set. | 1:13:34 | 1:13:39
Keep the momentum. | 1:13:39 | 1:13:42
Wayne urging that ball forward.
Well... It is the sort of bowl you | 1:13:48 | 1:13:53
need in close. That second bowl,
your opponent's missed it with the | 1:13:53 | 1:13:57
first. | 1:13:57 | 1:14:01
It has dropped. It will be a lot
closer now. | 1:14:22 | 1:14:32
closer now. REFEREE: About half an
inch past jack high. | 1:14:32 | 1:14:37
He wasn't quite sure. | 1:14:41 | 1:14:44
Well if he gets into the jack here
he is good. Any touch at all would | 1:14:52 | 1:14:56
be enough. Oh, dear me! So close.
Big fast bowls that he is using. | 1:14:56 | 1:15:06
Just swinging inside the head. | 1:15:06 | 1:15:11
He needs a very small adjustment,
Wayne Willgress. A touch of the jack | 1:15:43 | 1:15:56
would be a big turn around. One down
to three up. They're calling for the | 1:15:56 | 1:16:01
jack. But he is inside it. Just
needed a little bit more weight to | 1:16:01 | 1:16:09
hold the line. | 1:16:09 | 1:16:13
I think it will be a very quiet draw
from Robert. | 1:16:23 | 1:16:28
Can't afford any movement on the
jack. | 1:16:32 | 1:16:35 | |
He was being careful. Well, we have
had a lot of chats about different | 1:16:47 | 1:16:58
bowls and players using multiple
sets. They all have to be match sets | 1:16:58 | 1:17:02
of course when you're playing in a
singles game. Multiple manufacturers | 1:17:02 | 1:17:10
and players just play with what they
think is right for them. Not unusual | 1:17:10 | 1:17:15
for players to play with different
bowls. Different times of the day. | 1:17:15 | 1:17:21
The rink does change. | 1:17:21 | 1:17:25
Of course there is the different
weights available, but different | 1:17:31 | 1:17:37
biases are the key. Both these
players while using different | 1:17:37 | 1:17:42
manufacturers, the profile lines on
the he bowls are very similar. Both | 1:17:42 | 1:17:51
have erred on the wider line bowl. | 1:17:51 | 1:17:56
He may be tempted. | 1:18:54 | 1:19:02
He is going to stay on the draw he
hopes. | 1:19:02 | 1:19:05
He is conscious of that jack being
slightly off centre. Will he push | 1:19:08 | 1:19:13
the red bowl directly on to it. He
wants to get away from the two reds. | 1:19:13 | 1:19:17
He has. Different make the length of
the jack. But it's still there to | 1:19:17 | 1:19:21
get the split. Having played that
type of bowl, he might favour going | 1:19:21 | 1:19:29
with more weight next time. | 1:19:29 | 1:19:32
Robert conscious of the fact that
the two bowls can disappear. Getting | 1:19:51 | 1:19:56
back one and hoping to stop in time.
He has to play it, John. His | 1:19:56 | 1:20:08
instincts will be to play this. He
is an aggressive player. The | 1:20:08 | 1:20:14
alternative is to make a correction
just on the draw on the forehand. | 1:20:14 | 1:20:18
The danger we are a strike bowl he
has nothing at the back of the head. | 1:20:18 | 1:20:22
So he is aware of the fact he has no
position. He is persevering on the | 1:20:22 | 1:20:27
draw. | 1:20:27 | 1:20:29 | |
Given it some try too. Any edge on
the jack. That is the probably | 1:20:33 | 1:20:39
you're just carrying a couple of
feet of weight and struggles to get | 1:20:39 | 1:20:42
down. He reckoned he had that. That
has created a real big problem for | 1:20:42 | 1:20:49
him now. | 1:20:49 | 1:20:57
No position really, John, and...
Well a good bowl from Robert. : He | 1:20:59 | 1:21:06
doesn't want to leave anything to
the side. Inside the green at sort | 1:21:06 | 1:21:11
of 2 o'clock wouldn't be a wide
bowl. He would like to get another | 1:21:11 | 1:21:15
one in there, David. Hmm, well, the
alternative on the backhand as well, | 1:21:15 | 1:21:21
the jack scooting across the other
side will cost him a couple of | 1:21:21 | 1:21:24
shots. He has an alternative on the
backhand to play on the blind side | 1:21:24 | 1:21:29
and play the same shot. I think that
is probably the shot he will play. | 1:21:29 | 1:21:36
Yes he is reverting to his backhand.
It is a safe draw. | 1:21:36 | 1:21:43
Now he needs to bend. He has played
this well. Very good bowl by Robert | 1:21:52 | 1:21:58
Paxton. That gives him width and
another shot by the looks of it. | 1:21:58 | 1:22:06
Surely Wayne will go this time. He
played that, he identified it and | 1:22:06 | 1:22:13
played it well. | 1:22:13 | 1:22:15
Looking for split. And he got the
other one. But that one wasn't in, | 1:22:23 | 1:22:28
John, it was the side bowl that
Robert had played with his last | 1:22:28 | 1:22:32
delivery. You can see how good a
bowl that was by Robert Paxton. If | 1:22:32 | 1:22:39
he hadn't got there, he would have
been three down. | 1:22:39 | 1:22:45
been three down. A good cover bowl
played by Robert. Just hiding his | 1:22:47 | 1:22:52
own in behind the front once. Clever
stuff. | 1:22:52 | 1:22:56
The send up scoring was well hidden.
Was never going to go out. You can | 1:23:03 | 1:23:11
see the frustration with Wayne
there. Well, some players like to | 1:23:11 | 1:23:17
show their emotions and it is no bad
thing sometimes. He shows it, no | 1:23:17 | 1:23:25
matter what way the game's going.
Quite like that. He has got four | 1:23:25 | 1:23:31
ends to turn this around. This is
normally the period he says he | 1:23:31 | 1:23:36
bursts into life! | 1:23:36 | 1:23:39
Been playing good bowls, Wayne,
Robert's just had the edge though. | 1:23:46 | 1:23:56
Another good start. Right to the
jack. Dead centre. Perfect line. | 1:23:56 | 1:24:04
Well done. | 1:24:26 | 1:24:29
Past it on the backhand side. He
just left that short. Well what's | 1:24:53 | 1:24:59
going to clog up that hand for the
next bowl. This is the second bowl | 1:24:59 | 1:25:05
where Wayne really needs to get this
in. He has been drooping it short -- | 1:25:05 | 1:25:10
dropping it short a few times. | 1:25:10 | 1:25:13
Oh, he is too long this time. That
takes all the pressure off Robert | 1:25:15 | 1:25:22
Paxton. | 1:25:22 | 1:25:31
Can't blame him, he was going
chasing it. Good chance to get his | 1:25:56 | 1:26:00
own bowl on, or take the green bowl
out clean. This one really needs to | 1:26:00 | 1:26:07
be in. | 1:26:07 | 1:26:09 | |
Oh, that wee touch just makes it so
much different now. Without that | 1:26:22 | 1:26:27
touch he is coming in behind his own
bowl. He was unfortunate, he played | 1:26:27 | 1:26:33
a good bowl then. Just needed to
miss that bowl. He has fallen off it | 1:26:33 | 1:26:40
and gives a bit more of a target for
Robert Paxton if he wants to play | 1:26:40 | 1:26:45
these balls. REFEREE: Time out
called. Rob has two time-outs | 1:26:45 | 1:26:52
remaining. | 1:26:52 | 1:26:57
remaining. He is looking at this
shot. If he gets the high side of it | 1:27:00 | 1:27:03
and that is where the problem lies.
If he gets the high side of that, | 1:27:03 | 1:27:07
the jack's going to move and the
re-spot position's over here. So he | 1:27:07 | 1:27:14
has to be very careful. | 1:27:14 | 1:27:20
Just the chance to get the two bowls
out. He is playing it. | 1:27:28 | 1:27:36
Has to be fortunate. That is
probably better he didn't get a | 1:27:38 | 1:27:43
connection there, John, because I
think he would have taken his own | 1:27:43 | 1:27:52
two out. Now, Wayne, can you add a
third? Rebecca Field and Wayne's | 1:27:52 | 1:28:02
mother. That is the planning
committee for the wedding! | 1:28:02 | 1:28:14
Good thi Wayne's had a run in this
tournament then. That is overweight. | 1:28:16 | 1:28:20
Steady. Oh, missed chance. Really
needed a 3 there just to add that | 1:28:20 | 1:28:27
little bit more pressure. But still
with two shots... One behind. Three | 1:28:27 | 1:28:33
ends go. | 1:28:33 | 1:28:38
REFEREE: Jack length 26 metres.
Fantastic arena here at Potters | 1:29:05 | 1:29:12
leisure resort. Perfect for the
bowls. Big stand on one side and a | 1:29:12 | 1:29:16
lot of people in every day. Every
single session. In the morning the | 1:29:16 | 1:29:23
sessions are very busy. | 1:29:23 | 1:29:25
Good start, Wayne. Rather than go
through the gears. | 1:29:30 | 1:29:38
He is trying to drive himself
forward, get that adrenaline | 1:29:41 | 1:29:45
flowing. | 1:29:45 | 1:29:46
He is very close to the jack here,
Robert. Great bowl. Really that's... | 1:29:58 | 1:30:08
A bit of a kick for Wayne, because
with that first bowl, he will be | 1:30:08 | 1:30:12
thinking I can build on something
now. And then rocked back on his | 1:30:12 | 1:30:16
heels. | 1:30:16 | 1:30:18
He was on a good line again but he
did not send it. | 1:30:28 | 1:30:36
The jack slightly off centre. A good
bowl by Rob. Problems again for | 1:30:53 | 1:31:04
Wayne. | 1:31:04 | 1:31:08
Wayne. It is finding the answers at
the moment for Robert. He looks to | 1:31:09 | 1:31:14
be under pressure. | 1:31:14 | 1:31:19
be under pressure. Weight always
conscious of the fact it is easy to | 1:31:21 | 1:31:23
drop short. Robert Butler do well to
follow the ball. He doesn't want to | 1:31:23 | 1:31:30
put one beside the red bowl. He
could get three get cover of the | 1:31:30 | 1:31:36
same time. If he splits the jack and
the green bowl he would be in a good | 1:31:36 | 1:31:43
place, and counting. | 1:31:43 | 1:31:49
Not quite. It is a hard shot to
draw, a little bit of weight, trying | 1:32:01 | 1:32:09
to get a run through. That is not
easy. The short green bowl is | 1:32:09 | 1:32:14
causing him problems. He will have
to allow the bowl to bend. It looks | 1:32:14 | 1:32:23
the right shot. | 1:32:23 | 1:32:28
Well, it's going to be costly, isn't
it? He will expect to lose three | 1:32:35 | 1:32:41
here. 8-4. Four down with three ends
remaining. He might have been better | 1:32:41 | 1:32:48
to lose two feet on his last
delivery and draw it. It has given | 1:32:48 | 1:32:55
Robert room to put this one in. He
knows this is an important delivery. | 1:32:55 | 1:33:03
He wants to make this one count. | 1:33:04 | 1:33:10
No mistake. He played it well. A
perfect delivery. Makes it three. | 1:33:17 | 1:33:27
And of course the problem for a
Wayne Willgress is that he has to | 1:33:27 | 1:33:30
win the set. He has to score five
shots in the last two ends. | 1:33:30 | 1:33:39
Groundhog Day. We have been here
before. We have. On two other | 1:33:39 | 1:33:46
occasions. You just have a feeling
that in this game Wayne has found it | 1:33:46 | 1:33:50
very hard to score shots, even
though he has scored well. He has | 1:33:50 | 1:33:55
played better today than it did
yesterday. You can only get out of | 1:33:55 | 1:34:03
trouble so many times. I think
Robert is on a good length and line | 1:34:03 | 1:34:06
at the moment. He will know if he
can play a good end he can seal it. | 1:34:06 | 1:34:14
But you never know in bowls. It is a
strange old game, isn't it? Manages | 1:34:14 | 1:34:23
to surprise us, even now after all
these years of being involved in the | 1:34:23 | 1:34:26
sport. | 1:34:26 | 1:34:31
I don't think Wayne is going to pick
up any loose ball Macs today. -- | 1:34:39 | 1:34:45
bowls. | 1:34:45 | 1:34:54
That is a sensible bowl. A good
place. | 1:34:54 | 1:35:02
Certainly no mistakes from Robert
Paxton. He will do everything he can | 1:35:31 | 1:35:35
to try to finish this match this
end. Wayne will have two will begin | 1:35:35 | 1:35:41
carry the jack. -- will have to hope
he can carry the jack. That would be | 1:35:41 | 1:35:51
the target for Paxton. Just put a
bit on from his last to get to the | 1:35:51 | 1:36:01
two green bowls, lock it in. | 1:36:01 | 1:36:07
He needs to run. Dear, that is not
where he wanted it. The shot is | 1:36:27 | 1:36:36
still there and he knows it. | 1:36:36 | 1:36:47
He is not sure about this one. The
line is very close. Very close. | 1:36:48 | 1:37:02
line is very close. Very close. Two
inches away from glory. He was very | 1:37:02 | 1:37:06
close with that. He has still got
half a chance as it stands would he | 1:37:06 | 1:37:12
was very unlucky. I would like to
have seen that jack being middle. It | 1:37:12 | 1:37:20
would have been three shots and
totally hidden. I thought he was | 1:37:20 | 1:37:25
just hanging past it. He has got a
bit of it. He has still got an | 1:37:25 | 1:37:32
opportunity though. | 1:37:32 | 1:37:38
opportunity though. Robert needs to
get to those greens. I think it is a | 1:37:38 | 1:37:45
forehand personally to try to get to
the back green. | 1:37:45 | 1:37:51
the back green. He could play at off
the other side if he wanted to. That | 1:37:53 | 1:37:57
seems the easier way in. Not looking
at the jack. | 1:37:57 | 1:38:05
at the jack. Anything past the red
bowl would be good. He just has to | 1:38:07 | 1:38:13
lock into the green ones. He doesn't
want to be short. He doesn't want to | 1:38:13 | 1:38:21
fall off that. Not too bad. | 1:38:21 | 1:38:27
fall off that. Not too bad. It will
lead a catch for a Wayne. Well, the | 1:38:28 | 1:38:33
perfect shot is on, John, but I
don't even think it is worth | 1:38:33 | 1:38:37
attending. I would be playing
through this. He has to play through | 1:38:37 | 1:38:43
it, John. Try to get into that
split. If he does that and get the | 1:38:43 | 1:38:49
red bowl, if that goes over the
jack, goes through, the jack moves, | 1:38:49 | 1:38:54
ends in this position, the chances
are that red bowl will go into the | 1:38:54 | 1:38:57
ditch. He could pick up three four
shots. He could try to play the | 1:38:57 | 1:39:05
forehand. And try get to the jack to
move it on the forehand. I don't | 1:39:05 | 1:39:10
think he will get back in time. That
is really difficult. That would be | 1:39:10 | 1:39:15
some bowl. There is a connection. He
has to hope things go his way. | 1:39:15 | 1:39:24
He is in the area. I don't believe
it! | 1:39:28 | 1:39:37 | |
it! Had that gone through we will be
picking up four shots. Unbelievable | 1:39:37 | 1:39:42
results. | 1:39:42 | 1:39:47
results. I have to say Robert Paxton
played very well in that match. He | 1:39:47 | 1:39:51
was very steady, very professional.
Wayne Willgress added tremendously | 1:39:51 | 1:39:56
to the semifinal. The young man can
be very pleased. He has made it to | 1:39:56 | 1:40:00
the last four of the world
championship and he has been highly | 1:40:00 | 1:40:05
entertaining. Yes he has. He will
learn a lot from this. A very | 1:40:05 | 1:40:11
professional performance. Very
steady today. He did the job. | 1:40:11 | 1:40:19
steady today. He did the job. 6-3,
11-4. I think 11-4 was a little bit | 1:40:19 | 1:40:23
unfair in the second set. It was
closer than that. There was so much | 1:40:23 | 1:40:29
and so much that was good about this
match. Some wonderful play. | 1:40:29 | 1:40:36
Robert Paxton was in trouble in the
first couple of ends. He picked up | 1:40:43 | 1:40:51
couple of singles even though he was
under the cosh. This was his third | 1:40:51 | 1:40:54
bowl in the final end of the set.
Lost one. But he was four in front. | 1:40:54 | 1:41:00
That was a key moment. Wayne
Willgress wasn't finished. 3-0 down, | 1:41:00 | 1:41:07
the last ball to go 3-2 in the
second set. And the big drive, three | 1:41:07 | 1:41:14
shots against them, took two out,
kept in the set. 5-2 down. Robert | 1:41:14 | 1:41:23
Paxton playing so well, the seventh
end, picked up three to go four | 1:41:23 | 1:41:29
shots in front into the last end.
There was no breaking the man from | 1:41:29 | 1:41:32
there. | 1:41:32 | 1:41:37
there. Wayne desperately unlucky.
The jack in the ditch was worth | 1:41:38 | 1:41:41
four. Robert Paxton into the final.
Great bowling. It shows how | 1:41:41 | 1:41:48
consistent Robert Paxton was. | 1:41:48 | 1:41:53
consistent Robert Paxton was. It was
much closer in terms of the match. | 1:41:56 | 1:42:00
Robert Paxton very professional,
Wayne Willgress played really well. | 1:42:00 | 1:42:03
The right man won. He was | 1:42:03 | 1:42:05
Wayne Willgress played really well.
The right man won. He was that | 1:42:05 | 1:42:05
little bit better on the day.
Indeed. Robert Paxton alongside me, | 1:42:05 | 1:42:09
along with Wayne Willgress. Wayne,
an incredible week. After what has | 1:42:09 | 1:42:16
happened over the last 48 hours, was
a bit difficult to set yourself for | 1:42:16 | 1:42:20
today? Not really. I had to go out
there and try to play. Rob was too | 1:42:20 | 1:42:26
good. But be under pressure. I had
to play a few shots that didn't come | 1:42:26 | 1:42:33
off. He put me under pressure. I
played some loose ones which he | 1:42:33 | 1:42:38
capitalised on. What is your week
been like? It is a dream. The best | 1:42:38 | 1:42:47
time of my life, really. I have been
given the chance by potters. | 1:42:47 | 1:42:53
Hopefully I did myself proud. I
could have tried to do a bit better, | 1:42:53 | 1:42:58
but...
APPLAUSE. | 1:42:58 | 1:43:04
You brought a lot of entertainment
and magic to the week. It has then | 1:43:04 | 1:43:08
fantastic watching you. You came up
against a man who was determined. | 1:43:08 | 1:43:12
You have that steely focusing your
right? Yeah, it has gone well today. | 1:43:12 | 1:43:18
Wayne came out of the blocks. I
could have been down in the first | 1:43:18 | 1:43:23
few ends. He has got himself in the
top 16. Good luck to him. You seem | 1:43:23 | 1:43:29
emotional about getting yourself
through to the final and the chance | 1:43:29 | 1:43:32
to win the one event you want to win
above all else? Definitely. The semi | 1:43:32 | 1:43:37
is the biggest game. Once you're
there you can relax. Tomorrow | 1:43:37 | 1:43:41
afternoon hopefully I will give
market a good game. What was it like | 1:43:41 | 1:43:45
playing this guy in front of this
crowd? Fantastic. That is what bowls | 1:43:45 | 1:43:49
is about. You want atmosphere. Come
back tomorrow. Absolutely. Wayne, | 1:43:49 | 1:43:58
commiserations. Rob,
congratulations. We look forward to | 1:43:58 | 1:44:00
seeing you in the final. Let's show
you what we have got coming up on | 1:44:00 | 1:44:04
the BBC. | 1:44:04 | 1:44:06
That is what is coming up in the
next couple of days. This time next | 1:44:40 | 1:44:44
week though it is time for the
return of the Six Nations. | 1:44:44 | 1:44:51
I like a challenge. Haggis.
Twickenham. A French kiss. | 1:44:57 | 1:45:10
Twickenham. A French kiss. We will
settle it on the pitch. | 1:45:10 | 1:45:16
That is just about it at potters.
The crowd drifting away. They will | 1:45:19 | 1:45:24
be back for the final tomorrow. We
hope to see you then. Mark Dawes | 1:45:24 | 1:45:28
against Robert Paxton. For now, from
all of us here, bye-bye. | 1:45:28 | 1:45:37 |
