Good evening. Welcome to BBC Channel Islands. Wednesday's | :00:06. | :00:10.
headlines: Shape up or ship out. Condor is told it must improve | :00:10. | :00:17.
services or lose its permit. Also tonight: Fresh hope for | :00:17. | :00:24.
disability and gay rights campaigners. | :00:24. | :00:34.
:00:34. | :00:45. | ||
And he's the bee's knees. Find out For good evening. Late arrivals, | :00:45. | :00:50.
delays and engine failures. Condor have had a number of technical | :00:50. | :00:53.
issues with its bleak recently and has been told it could face losing | :00:53. | :00:59.
its permit if services do not improve -- its fleet. For some, the | :00:59. | :01:09.
:01:09. | :01:15. | ||
reason delays have been there for hours. There were some people who | :01:15. | :01:21.
had tiny little children, and we felt so sorry for them. Those | :01:21. | :01:27.
children, they had to wake them up and carried them in. It is not just | :01:27. | :01:30.
this woman who is unhappy. At a ferry terminal today, there were | :01:30. | :01:38.
plenty more disgruntled customers. Every time I come over, it is the | :01:38. | :01:48.
:01:48. | :01:48. | ||
the late or something has gone wrong. -- it is by their late. | :01:48. | :01:55.
Today, Jersey's minister who is responsible for the island's ferry, | :01:55. | :02:00.
admits the service is not up to standards. There are quite a number | :02:00. | :02:06.
of unacceptable delays caused by mechanical issues. There has been a | :02:06. | :02:11.
repeat in a recent weekend, and that is not acceptable. Condor says | :02:11. | :02:14.
it understands people's frustrations but insists this is | :02:14. | :02:23.
doing all it can. We have been spending a lot of money on | :02:23. | :02:27.
overhauls. We have had a few issues in the last few weeks, but we're | :02:27. | :02:31.
confident we will have a trouble- free summer. There is no direct | :02:31. | :02:35.
competition on the route, and Condor has until next year to | :02:35. | :02:38.
improve its services. Until then, passengers have no choice but to | :02:38. | :02:45.
stay on board. Guernsey is a step closer to | :02:45. | :02:49.
introducing Disability discrimination laws. More than 60 % | :02:49. | :02:55.
of islanders want greater it in -- protection for employers, so the | :02:55. | :02:58.
Commerce and Employment Department is making it a top priority. But | :02:58. | :03:04.
changes could still be a long way off. Dania Lloyd used to work for a | :03:04. | :03:08.
trust company but had to give it up after a horse-riding accident left | :03:08. | :03:12.
her with brain injuries. She now has mobility issues and has | :03:12. | :03:19.
struggled to get a job. We would have the interview, and it would go | :03:19. | :03:24.
really well, and then I would get a planned walkout. It is not | :03:24. | :03:29.
something that is horrendous, but it is something you can see that | :03:29. | :03:34.
isn't 100 %. It automatically frightens them. Error via by the | :03:34. | :03:38.
Commerce and Employment Department found that more than 60 % of people | :03:38. | :03:48.
:03:48. | :03:51. | ||
wanted greater protection for workers -- a review. The chair of | :03:51. | :03:54.
Guernsey's Disability Alliance has welcomed the news, but any news -- | :03:54. | :04:01.
any change in the law is still a way off. It could take several more | :04:01. | :04:06.
years before this even comes to the States for a vote. Even then it is | :04:06. | :04:10.
not guaranteed. Meantime, this is a global financial centre, and we | :04:10. | :04:13.
don't have laws against discrimination against disabled | :04:13. | :04:19.
people. Some people find that quite shocking. May is now working as a | :04:19. | :04:23.
carer. She says her experience mean she can understand patients better. | :04:23. | :04:26.
She hopes new legislation means that employers will give more | :04:26. | :04:33.
people like her chance. Now to another complained of | :04:33. | :04:36.
discrimination. Currently, gay men are offered -- forbidden from | :04:36. | :04:45.
giving blood to the Islands' health services. The living blood is a | :04:45. | :04:49.
crucial part of the Islands' health services. But if you're gay man, | :04:49. | :04:55.
you're not allowed to do it. One man wants the rules to change. | :04:55. | :05:01.
is another form of discrimination in all of the prejudice that we | :05:01. | :05:05.
face in our lives. The health department so that they follow the | :05:05. | :05:09.
same rules as the UK when it comes to donating blood. It means anybody | :05:09. | :05:14.
with HIV or hepatitis cannot donate blood, or anybody who has ever been | :05:14. | :05:19.
an intravenous drug user. It also means that any man who has ever had | :05:19. | :05:24.
sexual contact with another man also cannot donate blood. It is not | :05:24. | :05:28.
a case of discrimination, it is a case off criteria laid down. We are | :05:29. | :05:36.
a small jurisdiction, as is Jersey, and we followed the guidelines laid | :05:36. | :05:42.
down by the UK blood transfusion services. They advise us on who | :05:42. | :05:49.
they consider are appropriate as donors. My argument is that they | :05:49. | :05:54.
are homosexual men and women poor in loving monogamous relationships, | :05:54. | :05:59.
the same as heterosexual. So why can't those people give blood as | :05:59. | :06:05.
well? Until the rules are changed in the UK, this laboratory at a | :06:05. | :06:07.
Guernsey's hospital will be processing blood from straight men | :06:07. | :06:16.
only. Another issue facing the Islands' | :06:16. | :06:20.
homosexual community is the ban on civil partnerships. Same-sex | :06:20. | :06:25.
weddings are not legal, but today views have been had by a government | :06:25. | :06:30.
committee in Jersey. We went to work -- to meet one month calling | :06:30. | :06:35.
for air quality. He eventually proposed on the long denied to me. | :06:35. | :06:41.
Stephen Edwards tells me about the love of his life. If he goes away, | :06:41. | :06:45.
I go away, we do miss each other. And what emotions does he bring out | :06:45. | :06:52.
in new? He annoys me, he frustrates me, he understands me, he calms me. | :06:52. | :06:56.
Everything you would accept -- expect from a loving relationship. | :06:56. | :07:00.
Stephen is preparing to fight for love. He cannot be legally wed to | :07:00. | :07:05.
his fiancee, and -- because the civil partnership law has not been | :07:05. | :07:11.
passed in Jersey. He has come across several other gay couples | :07:11. | :07:15.
battling for quality. When you go up to somebody and introduce them | :07:15. | :07:19.
as your partner, it is different from introducing them as your | :07:19. | :07:23.
husband. There's a different social context. It is up to scrutiny to | :07:23. | :07:27.
make sure the public has been fully consulted before any decision is | :07:27. | :07:31.
made. Stephen Edwards will be asked his opinion about gay marriage in a | :07:31. | :07:36.
place of worship in Jersey. The civil law partnership is due to be | :07:36. | :07:40.
debated later in the States. Being very close to his fiancee's family, | :07:40. | :07:44.
Stephen point out that if the day comes, the couple have already | :07:44. | :07:49.
considered how they would like their big day to be. I think of | :07:49. | :07:53.
something more akin to a registry marriage, where is he wants more of | :07:53. | :07:57.
a party. Whether or not Stephen get his dream wedding remains to be | :07:57. | :08:04.
decided. Guernsey Post wants to increase its | :08:04. | :08:08.
stamp prices from August. The price of sending a letter to the UK bull | :08:08. | :08:18.
:08:18. | :08:19. | ||
rise by 2p to 47 pence. The company still needs permission from the | :08:19. | :08:22.
regulator. Job losses are also likely. | :08:22. | :08:26.
A former politician will find out next week if he has have won the | :08:26. | :08:31.
right to sue Jersey's government. Stuart survey claims he was | :08:31. | :08:38.
unfairly dismissed as Health Minister in 2007. He also says that | :08:38. | :08:43.
there will servants covered up child abuse. Stuart Syvret a was | :08:43. | :08:48.
Health Minister until 2007. He wants to sue the state for what he | :08:48. | :08:51.
claims was failing in their duty of care towards him when he was a | :08:51. | :08:57.
politician. But SLS -- solicitor acting for the state says that as | :08:57. | :09:07.
:09:07. | :09:12. | ||
he is there longer a politician, he cannot sue the state. He now want | :09:12. | :09:15.
their review and says there is a problem with the chosen judge | :09:15. | :09:22.
Jonathan Sumpton QC, claiming as too many ties with their legal | :09:22. | :09:32.
:09:32. | :09:34. | ||
system. We're standing in Court Number to this morning. The man | :09:34. | :09:38.
said he had been left bankrupt which had led to increasing | :09:38. | :09:42.
problems on is how. The judge said he would not make a decision today, | :09:42. | :09:46.
instead that will come on Monday when he would decide on whether | :09:46. | :09:52.
their case should be struck out. A decision on a review is yet to be | :09:52. | :09:58.
made. Jersey's breeding pedigree is going | :09:58. | :10:08.
:10:08. | :10:09. | ||
global. For the first time, a Jersey bull will be bred around the | :10:09. | :10:18.
world. This is Bee's Knees. His owners have always thought it, and | :10:18. | :10:28.
:10:28. | :10:35. | ||
now it seems he really does have the X factor. He eats huge | :10:35. | :10:39.
quantities of grass, brings the milk home and produces a high | :10:39. | :10:49.
:10:49. | :10:54. | ||
quality product. His mother has tremendously healthy milk. That is | :10:54. | :10:58.
why Bee's Knees has been singled out by bull breeding giant cogent. | :10:58. | :11:05.
The company will be selling and marketing his Amen globally. And | :11:05. | :11:12.
this is 100 % pure Jersey cards. It is the first time a global breeding | :11:12. | :11:22.
:11:22. | :11:28. | ||
company will market the seamen from the pure Ireland bull. -- semen. | :11:28. | :11:34.
The response we are getting is lovely. The only hitch is that | :11:34. | :11:38.
Bee's Knees has to move to the UK. While it might be the end of a | :11:38. | :11:40.
beautiful friendship, his owners believe it will be the beginning of | :11:40. | :11:46.
a big future for the Jersey cow across the globe. Which you could | :11:46. | :11:56.
:11:56. | :11:59. | ||
say it is the Bee's Knees. Let's see if it's going to rain. | :11:59. | :12:04.
Here is the weather. Some welcome rain and the forecast over the | :12:04. | :12:09.
coming days, but quite unsettled at generally. We have low pressure in | :12:09. | :12:13.
the Atlantic and a number of Whether funds at close by. By | :12:13. | :12:18.
lunchtime tomorrow, those by the front starting to move away. -- | :12:18. | :12:26.
weather fronts. This one will bring some very wet weather as we end the | :12:26. | :12:33.
week. This evening and overnight, generally fairly cloudy skies. One | :12:33. | :12:42.
or two showers which could be quite heavy tomorrow morning. Tomorrow, | :12:42. | :12:46.
perhaps a wet start of the day but those showers through clearing, | :12:46. | :12:50.
allowing some lengthy spells of sunshine. Just one or two isolated | :12:50. | :12:53.
light showers possible into the afternoon, but generally it is | :12:53. | :13:02.
looking dry almost a bath. Top temperatures 18 or 19 -- dry for | :13:02. | :13:12.
:13:12. | :13:36. | ||
Here is the out look over the coming days. It is remaining fairly | :13:36. | :13:44.
and settled, just a few isolated showers possible tomorrow. On | :13:44. | :13:53.
Friday, wet and windy weather. Turning a little quieter into the | :13:53. | :14:03.

Tomorrow morning, on BBC Radio Jersey, you can post your questions | :14:09. | :14:13.
