Hello, welcome to BBC Channel Islands. The headlines. | :00:08. | :00:12.
A final farewell, Jersey's Lieutenant Governor says goodbye to | :00:12. | :00:15.
Jersey but not before he has spoken his mind. | :00:15. | :00:20.
Also tonight, Big Brother meets the fly tippers. Why you would not want | :00:20. | :00:25.
to be caught on film in Guernsey. Join me when I will be live from | :00:25. | :00:28.
the Isle of Wight to find out if there will be a Channel Island | :00:28. | :00:37.
Jersey's outgoing Lieutenant Governor has criticised the way | :00:37. | :00:40.
some parts of the island's community used the Haut de la | :00:40. | :00:45.
Garenne child abuse investigation for political gain. Lieutenant | :00:45. | :00:48.
General Sir Andrew Ridgeway said goodbye to Jersey today, but not | :00:48. | :00:51.
without first giving his opinion on his five years at Government House. | :00:51. | :01:01.
:01:01. | :01:02. | ||
Brent Pilnick reports. Pomp and pageantry for departing | :01:02. | :01:06.
Lieutenant Governor. But as Sir Andrew Ridgeway took a final salute, | :01:06. | :01:11.
he reflected on one of the biggest issues to ever affect the island. | :01:11. | :01:14.
Sir Andrew felt that some of those in the community of which he was | :01:14. | :01:19.
there to represent tried to use the Haut De La Garenne child abuse | :01:19. | :01:26.
scandal for political gain. All the focus on the island should have | :01:26. | :01:31.
been for caring for those people, helping them to come to terms with | :01:31. | :01:35.
it. And crucially conducting the police investigation and gathering | :01:35. | :01:39.
the evidence so if possible people could be brought to trial for these | :01:39. | :01:43.
offences. When we should have been focused, everybody should have been | :01:43. | :01:48.
focused on that, they were diverted away by these extraordinary | :01:48. | :01:54.
allegations of a mass murders. And people attempting to exploited the | :01:54. | :01:57.
situation for political purposes. I think that was a great shame | :01:58. | :02:03.
because it distracted from the real effort, which was caring for the | :02:03. | :02:07.
people who had been through that abuse. The Ridgeway family are held | :02:07. | :02:12.
in high esteem by a Islanders, and as they queued up to say goodbye, | :02:12. | :02:18.
Sir Andrew reflected on a community spirit the UK could take heed of. | :02:18. | :02:24.
That culture of giving up time for the community is terrific. I hear | :02:24. | :02:26.
Prime Minister David Cameron struggling sometimes to explain | :02:26. | :02:30.
what he means by the big society. Just come here, it is here, alive | :02:30. | :02:36.
and well. As Sir Andrew got a final goodbye from the Chief Minister and | :02:36. | :02:40.
his wife, the island said farewell to a governor who is Tamar has | :02:40. | :02:45.
covered one of Jersey's most turbulent times. -- whose term has | :02:45. | :02:51.
covered one of Jersey's most turbulent times. And you can see | :02:51. | :02:54.
the full interview with Liutenant General Sir Andrew Ridgeway on our | :02:54. | :03:00.
website. Lloyds Banking Group says it hasn't | :03:00. | :03:03.
ruled out redundancies in the Channel Islands after announcing | :03:03. | :03:10.
it's shedding 15,000 jobs across its operations. Most of the job | :03:10. | :03:13.
losses, which amount to 14% of its workforce, will be in middle | :03:13. | :03:17.
management. The group won't be reducing the number of branches on | :03:17. | :03:22.
the high street. Jersey politicians have agreed to | :03:22. | :03:26.
plans to regenerate the north of town in the area around the Odeon | :03:26. | :03:32.
cinema and the new Town Park. They've adopted the North of Town | :03:32. | :03:34.
masterplan, which includes proposals for housing on Ann Court, | :03:34. | :03:37.
shops and flats at Minden Place, and extra green space and | :03:37. | :03:44.
pedestrian areas. It's long been a problem blighting | :03:44. | :03:49.
Guernsey but now action is being taken to stop flytipping. Amy | :03:49. | :03:52.
Harris reports on the CCTV cameras which are being installed for the | :03:52. | :03:55.
first time at flytipping hotspots in St Peter Port in a bid to make | :03:56. | :04:05.
:04:06. | :04:09. | ||
litterbugs think twice. Caught on camera, the messy problem | :04:09. | :04:14.
littering and Ireland. Fly-tipping. This quiet residential street is | :04:14. | :04:18.
one of the areas plagued by fly- tipping in Guernsey. You can see | :04:18. | :04:22.
evidence of it behind me, a suitcase and a black bin-liner just | :04:22. | :04:26.
left in the street. Neighbours here at Les Petites Fontaines say it | :04:26. | :04:30.
gets much worse. A lot of it is rubbish bags that are not tied up | :04:30. | :04:34.
and left out too early, so the sea gulls get it and it spreads down | :04:34. | :04:38.
the street. But then, source pounds, there was a washing machine once. | :04:38. | :04:44.
Chairs, mattresses. I don't understand what they think will | :04:44. | :04:49.
happen to it, who will take it away. That is why action is being taken. | :04:49. | :04:54.
This street is just one place in St Peter Port which is getting CCTV | :04:54. | :04:59.
cameras as town centre bosses crackdown on fly-tipping. I want to | :04:59. | :05:03.
stop people from doing it, under one to make people aware that it is | :05:03. | :05:06.
a social responsibility that everybody has to make sure the | :05:06. | :05:11.
street are keen. -- clean. It is welcome news for bosses here, whose | :05:11. | :05:16.
bosses have to -- whose workers have to pick up after their flight | :05:16. | :05:25.
to put. It is no need for it, if people stop throwing stuff away, it | :05:25. | :05:30.
is wasting taxpayers' money. With fines for anyone caught fly-tipping | :05:30. | :05:33.
up to 2,000, it is hoped the cameras will make people think | :05:33. | :05:38.
twice about how they dump their rubbish. | :05:38. | :05:40.
Guernsey's States members have voted against establishing a | :05:40. | :05:42.
compensation scheme for widows whose pension was replaced with a | :05:42. | :05:47.
bereavement allowance. The vote now means widows won't receive an extra | :05:47. | :05:57.
:05:57. | :06:04. | ||
payment from the States. Jersey Police offices are to move | :06:04. | :06:07.
to a building facing the Green Street roundabout. Around 108 | :06:07. | :06:10.
officers will transfer to Lime Grove House. The move will free up | :06:10. | :06:12.
land for new housing following renovation of the existing Rouge | :06:12. | :06:15.
Bouillon site where a small operational office and custody room | :06:15. | :06:17.
will remain. Flybe has reported making a 4.3 | :06:17. | :06:21.
million loss in the year to March. That's compared to a profit of more | :06:21. | :06:24.
than 24 million the previous year. It's thought that disruption due to | :06:24. | :06:27.
the Icelandic volcanic ash cloud and last winter's bad weather | :06:27. | :06:37.
:06:37. | :06:37. | ||
contributed to the losses. Good to have be with us here on BBC One. | :06:37. | :06:40.
Still to come on BBC Channel Islands news, David's here with the | :06:40. | :06:43.
weather and later in Spotlight with Justin and Natalie: Starring on the | :06:43. | :06:46.
big screen, the leading role for Dartmoor in the latest Hollywood | :06:46. | :06:56.
:06:56. | :07:01. | ||
That is it from me in the studio for now, I am back at 8pm and | :07:01. | :07:05.
turned into 5:00pm on BBC One. Let's join Mike Wilkins who is | :07:05. | :07:10.
light at the Island Games at the Isle of Wight -- Isle of Wight. | :07:10. | :07:12.
We've plenty of action from volleyball, athletics, basketball | :07:12. | :07:17.
and much more in a moment. First football and Channel Island fans | :07:17. | :07:22.
savouring a Guernsey Jersey final will be disappointed tonight. | :07:22. | :07:25.
Jersey lost to the hosts the Isle of Wight and Roger Bara sent this | :07:25. | :07:33.
report. The Jersey football team will | :07:33. | :07:36.
probably be kicking themselves tonight. This is a ship -- match | :07:36. | :07:42.
they should have and could have won quite easily. They created by far | :07:42. | :07:46.
the best chances, none more so that this effort just before half-time. | :07:46. | :07:51.
Who knows what they 1-0 lead would have done in the second half. They | :07:51. | :07:56.
were the dominant force in the second period, dominating, creating | :07:56. | :08:02.
several chances but converting none. They could not clear a corner | :08:02. | :08:08.
before extra-time which allowed John Mackie to poke the ball in. | :08:08. | :08:13.
That was all the Isle of Wight needed to get to the final. Four | :08:13. | :08:16.
Jersey now, a play-off for bronze medal. They do not get the chance | :08:16. | :08:22.
to try and retain the gold medal in the Isle of Wight. | :08:22. | :08:25.
That was Jersey's result but Guernsey have made it through to | :08:25. | :08:35.
:08:35. | :08:39. | ||
the final. They had a close match Guernsey came to these games | :08:39. | :08:44.
determined to prove they had overcome their least in -- a recent | :08:44. | :08:52.
loss to dent the point -- gently. It did not go to plant at first, | :08:52. | :08:59.
Guernsey hit back when Dominic Hulme scored an equaliser. As the | :08:59. | :09:02.
second half began, it was not long before Guernsey took the lead after | :09:02. | :09:11.
winning a penalty. Lynette Dyer stepped up and hit his target. That | :09:11. | :09:20.
was not to last, Aland evil to this -- even if the school. But then | :09:20. | :09:28.
Guernsey won 23-2, so they eat meat Isle of Wight in the final. -- they | :09:28. | :09:34.
won 3-2. So they meet the Isle of Wight and the final. We have | :09:34. | :09:39.
managed to clean the game off twice, they were magnificent today. We | :09:39. | :09:46.
mucked in when the time was right. Guernsey players will need a good | :09:46. | :09:54.
light so rest tonight before the final less than 20 -- 20 Boaz a | :09:54. | :09:58.
gate -- the final is less than 24 hours away. | :09:58. | :10:01.
As day five comes to an end, Guernsey continues to dominate the | :10:01. | :10:05.
medals table, with their old rivals Jersey not far behind. And it's | :10:05. | :10:10.
swimming that's helped boost both islands up the table. Emma Chambres | :10:10. | :10:13.
went along to last night's action to see another impressive Channel | :10:13. | :10:23.
:10:23. | :10:30. | ||
It has been Channel Island domination at the swimming pool. | :10:30. | :10:34.
Guernsey have been unstoppable. Things are going great, we have had | :10:34. | :10:38.
a great week. Tonight was awesome winning every what -- relay, a bit | :10:38. | :10:44.
of revenge from last night. We are delighted, very happy. Jersey are | :10:44. | :10:48.
normally Guernsey's biggest rivals. But at this Island Games it is a | :10:49. | :10:54.
much younger team from the island without experienced swimmer Ian. | :10:54. | :11:00.
Guernsey have got to senior boys here, who are up to Ian black's | :11:00. | :11:07.
standard. Whether or not he would have won gold, you do not know. It | :11:07. | :11:10.
is making a difference when you miss the senior swimmers. But the | :11:10. | :11:14.
young ones have stepped up. Jersey ladies relay team certainly | :11:14. | :11:20.
stepped up. They won the Ireland's first gold medal in the pool. | :11:20. | :11:24.
time we won it three default, which has a great experience, but it just | :11:24. | :11:27.
winning it as a team, it is a bright new team, winning it | :11:27. | :11:33.
together was amazing. It is a great feeling. More records and medals | :11:33. | :11:37.
will be had tonight, but will Guernsey be able to hang on to | :11:37. | :11:41.
their top spot? This really has been Guernsey's | :11:41. | :11:46.
games so far. They've been top of the medals table since day one. A | :11:46. | :11:49.
little earlier I spoke to their very proud bailiff, who is in the | :11:49. | :11:56.
Isle of Wight, to see what he made of their success. | :11:56. | :12:00.
Guernsey have really dominated the games so far. What have you made of | :12:00. | :12:04.
the progress of the team? They have been doing brilliantly. For all the | :12:04. | :12:08.
teams, it is celebration of everything that is good about sport. | :12:08. | :12:13.
But we have done remarkably well. What about for yourself, any | :12:13. | :12:17.
highlight? It is very difficult to speak in terms of highlights. I | :12:17. | :12:23.
have to say cycling was brilliant, watching the Badminton, winning the | :12:23. | :12:25.
Golden Knights -- gold medal at midnight. Table tennis, getting the | :12:26. | :12:31.
goal. I have also much enjoyed people just doing their best, | :12:31. | :12:35.
getting personal bests, or a particular at Jersey inverses | :12:35. | :12:43.
Gandhi contest. All against some other island. -- Jersey versus | :12:43. | :12:48.
Guernsey contest. What do you think has been Guernsey's secret weapon? | :12:48. | :12:53.
I think the very fact that back home, we have tremendous facilities, | :12:53. | :12:57.
we have backing from sponsors and government and we have a lot of | :12:57. | :13:01.
young people committed to sport. A lot of the old people putting | :13:01. | :13:04.
something back into sport so our youngsters can come through. That | :13:04. | :13:08.
is the strength we have got in our team, and it showed at these Games. | :13:08. | :13:14.
You alluded to it there, always nice to be one ahead of your rivals | :13:14. | :13:20.
J D? That is always so. I am passionate about sport. If I see | :13:20. | :13:25.
someone from Jersey playing well, I applaud that just as much. I just | :13:25. | :13:29.
want to see good sport, fair competition and seeing everyone | :13:29. | :13:36.
enjoying themselves. A very proud man indeed. On to some | :13:36. | :13:41.
other sports news, here is a round- up of success on court, and on the | :13:41. | :13:47.
track, and a heavy dose of inter- island rivalry. | :13:47. | :13:53.
Another night at the track, another Channel Island gold. Louise Perrigo | :13:53. | :13:58.
of Guernsey defended her title in the 10,000 metres despite strong | :13:58. | :14:04.
winds. It was good, I was glad that other people were taking the wind. | :14:04. | :14:09.
It was not my favourite conditions, they did the work force. Fellow | :14:09. | :14:18.
sunny and Dave Garland a long dark -- -- Dave Garland got the long | :14:18. | :14:22.
jump and javelin. Thursday started strongly for Guernsey as well, | :14:22. | :14:27.
they're ladies volleyball team at faced Jersey. With no medals at | :14:27. | :14:32.
stake, just bragging rights. A nail-biting match that went to five | :14:32. | :14:38.
sets, at Jersey try and three sets to two. Worst luck for Guernsey | :14:38. | :14:46.
ladies basketball team, they lost their semi-final against Gibraltar. | :14:46. | :14:53.
They will play off for bronze tomorrow. In the squash, Jones the | :14:53. | :14:57.
-- the gens eat -- the Jersey men's double pairing hope to add to the | :14:57. | :15:01.
team gold. The men's gold, and their ladies saw there. Make no | :15:01. | :15:06.
mistake, Jersey's squash team means business. We came here to win for | :15:06. | :15:10.
sure. We had a great success in Shetland, that is the last time | :15:10. | :15:14.
squash has been in the Island Games. We are here to see if we can better | :15:14. | :15:21.
that. We are on target to do that. Just time to give you the latest on | :15:21. | :15:26.
the medals table. As you can see, Guernsey are still top, leading the | :15:26. | :15:36.
:15:36. | :15:46. | ||
28 golds, 27 silvers and four Hello, good evening. Lots of fine | :15:46. | :15:50.
weather across the Channel Islands to enjoy over the next you days. No | :15:50. | :15:54.
appreciable rain, not such good news for the farmers and those who | :15:54. | :15:58.
need the name -- the rain. Those looking for fine and dry weather, | :15:58. | :16:02.
this high pressure will bring it. It moves across us over the next 24 | :16:02. | :16:05.
hours, there it is across the western end of the English Channel | :16:05. | :16:10.
by lunchtime tomorrow. Across the weekend, it is there in one form or | :16:10. | :16:13.
another. We bring in easterly winds across the island, by the time we | :16:14. | :16:18.
get to the second half of the weekend. That brings a warm air, 23 | :16:18. | :16:22.
degrees by Saturday and Sunday. Overnight tonight, some patchy | :16:22. | :16:27.
cloud but a lot of clear skies. Temperatures on the like -- | :16:27. | :16:31.
temperatures on the low side for the night-time hours. A gentle | :16:31. | :16:35.
northerly breeze. Tomorrow we should have a lot more sunshine, we | :16:35. | :16:43.
may have some fair weather cloud floating by. Again, a gentle north | :16:43. | :16:47.
or north-east wind. If you have been following the Island Games, | :16:47. | :16:51.
the final day tomorrow on the Isle of Wight, the weather set fine and | :16:51. | :17:01.
:17:01. | :17:17. | ||
dry with 20 the top temperature For hour surfers, a bit choppy. | :17:17. | :17:24.
Otherwise, no more than two or three feet. Here is the good news | :17:24. | :17:29.
for those who won the sunshine, it comes out across the weekend. 22 or | :17:29. | :17:33.
23 on Sunday. Such -- slightly more than easterly breeze so perhaps | :17:33. | :17:37.
cooler on the coast. By the start of next week, still dry with some | :17:37. | :17:47.
:17:47. | :17:49. | ||
That is about all the time we have tonight. We will be back tomorrow | :17:49. | :17:52.
Night Live tomorrow night here in the Isle of Wight from we will | :17:52. | :17:55. |
