Jersey has been chosen to host a major conference on the future of

whaling. Prole and anti-whaling groups will descend on the island

for the International Whaling Commission. It is an industry that

has aroused passions for decades. Next week that Storm will land on

the shores of Jersey. Despite the global ban on whaling, more than

200,000 whales are killed each year. Anti-whaling campaigner Barbara

Viega is part of a campaign action group dedicated to fighting the

practice. The idea was to come up with a strategy to stop whaling. Do

not allow them to refuel, do not allow them... We put the vessels in

front of them. Her group, Seashepherd, is one anti-whaling

organisation that will have lobby delegates at the International

Whaling Commission in the Hotel de France next week. It is a forum for

governments to come together and talk about whaling and the

conservation of whales. There is quite a lot of interest in looking

at the commission rules and Government procedures. The issue is

set to spread outside the conference walls. These peaceful

protesters will be building public pressure for increased protection

for whales. They are the most amazing, intelligent, graceful,

peaceful, beautiful beings. You just have to look at a video. They

deserve protecting. There are talks here are expected to be peaceful.

The arguments are well rehearsed. This is the 63rd such conference.

What issues such as fitting -- fishing quotas on the table, Jersey

could witness some progress in this battle. Doubts are being raised

over Jersey's open-skies policy which means airlines flying between

Jersey and the UK no longer need permits. The managing director of

Aurigny says that is too ambitious. Malcolm Hart feels Jersey is better

at guarding vital routes between the island and the mainland. If you

in the UK last month. His funeral took place today. Ian Kingham was

the head of Harley Owners Group. A spokesperson said he would have

been delighted with the tribute. More than �3 million is being spent

revamping one of Jersey's social housing estates. Work on Pomme D'or

Farm will begin in September as the nearby Bellozanne incinerator is

due to be pulled down next spring. It has been standing since 1977. It

D'or Farm is looking tired. Not for much longer. The estate is being

refurbished on the outside. Things like improving doors, windows and
