Good evening and welcome to eight saw the Channel Islands This

Wednesday. Here are top stories tonight: Save our houses are good

First tonight, there is a fresh warning for people living in houses

from traditional challenge Island granite. A family in Jersey believe

their father's death from lung cancer could be due to inhaling the

deadly gas radon. It is a silent threat, you cannot see, it's --

smell, or taste it. The Jersey Government has always estimated the

risk as being low but that is not stopping the Hanson family for a

better awareness. Vernon Hanson was an active 75-

year-old. One year ago he was diagnosed with lung cancer. It

recently claimed his life. Back came as a huge shock to his family

as he had never smoked a stayed in smoky places. His son Timothy is

left wondering why lung cancer is so prevalent in Jersey. It is not

necessarily that case there is a legacy of cheap cigarettes of the

island. The other factor is that Joseph has a certain geology and

that it suffers from radon gas, particularly in certain areas.

After smoking, radon is the next because for lung cancer. A largely

symptom when Bath, radon is rarely detected but it is constantly

released from granite. This is one of the area is considered at higher

risk. There are many homes built on granite foundations. Beautiful to

look at but could they be harmful to your health? These properties

are built with the membrane to ensure that radon gas cannot get

into the house. The measures that are taken to ensure that all the

properties have very good ventilation so we want to ensure

that they are bricks around the base of the property and not

obstructed, that there is good ventilation and that prevents the

build-up of gas. The onus is on the owner of the property to make sure

that they keep it in good repair. Timothy Hanson says that is

complacent. This is something these days need to get involved in. One

of the simple things that can be done is to install a radon detector

in your house. The detector measures radon in the home's

natural environment. He hopes his experience will prompt more people

to act now to ensure the air they breathe is safe.

2010 was a bumper year for just the Telecom. The group had a record

turnover of almost �100 million, making a pre-tax profit of nearly

�12 million. The company put its success down to reduce operating

costs and increased investment in drug and speeds on the island. The

figures come from the annual accounts of the state's which shows

that Jersey Water reported profits of just over �4 million. However

Politicians have agreed to a new gambling law but the Minister says

will encourage new business in Jersey while making it simpler for

inadequate and out of date. They do not provide infect -- protection.

It is a step forward to make sure we have modern and up-to-date laws.

The new law comes months ahead of new law coming in. It would allow

island will now cope with modern technology, some worry about the

impact of internet gambling. Because of e-gaming being a

families in other parts of the world when that people gets

change is long overdue to ensure is properly regulated and properly

Controversial proposals to change all the late land-use plan will be

are debating significant changes to the island land-use plan. There are

hours and is hoping to complete 54 holes, each one sponsored. It is

very windy and wet. It is getting very cold. He will keep going.
