awards to recognise those who Increasing numbers of young people | :00:41. | :00:47.
in Jersey are battling worries about homelessness, money and jobs. | :00:47. | :00:50.
That's according to an advice service which has seen a rise in | :00:50. | :00:53.
the number of people seeking help over the last year. Anisha Shah | :00:53. | :00:57.
reports. An unassuming Jersey building. But, | :00:57. | :01:01.
for hundreds of young people, it offers a lifeline. This is the | :01:01. | :01:05.
Youth Enquiry Service, known as Yes. It gives vulnerable youngsters | :01:05. | :01:10.
advice and support. Today, new mum Zoe Morrison has dropped in. She | :01:10. | :01:18.
comes for counselling and says it's invaluable. And four it is | :01:18. | :01:23.
absolutely amazing, it really is. You get support, no judgment | :01:23. | :01:29.
whatsoever. We have come in numerous times, going through a lot | :01:29. | :01:35.
of stuff. They will see me. Even just for a chat. And Zoe's not the | :01:35. | :01:38.
only one to drop in. Since the service was set up three years ago, | :01:39. | :01:43.
a growing number of youngsters are coming here. | :01:43. | :01:48.
We have seen a massive number of people coming into use the service | :01:48. | :01:53.
ended 2 1/2 years we have been open. More people are experiencing | :01:53. | :01:58.
problems such as emotional health issues, dealing with homelessness, | :01:58. | :02:05.
unemployment, education issues. Because of the increasing demand, | :02:05. | :02:08.
the Youth Enquiry Service has relaunched its website. It's hoped | :02:08. | :02:11.
more young people can access the services remotely by simply logging | :02:11. | :02:16.
on. And this is it. It's hoped this funkier, more interactive site will | :02:16. | :02:19.
connect better with an internet savvy generation so that more | :02:19. | :02:27.
troubled youngsters can benefit from it. | :02:27. | :02:31.
A rare baby bird has been savaged and killed by a dog at L'Eree Bank | :02:31. | :02:35.
in Guernsey, one of the island's most important nesting grounds. | :02:35. | :02:37.
It's prompted the Environment Department to issue a fresh warning | :02:37. | :02:41.
to dog owners to keep their animals under control. This report by Emma | :02:41. | :02:47.
Thomas does contain images which could be upsetting to some. | :02:47. | :02:51.
A haven for birds. An important nesting ground. But humans are | :02:51. | :02:55.
taking their toll. This was a baby oystercatcher, four or five weeks | :02:55. | :03:01.
old, before it died. Judy Down told me she saw it being savaged by | :03:01. | :03:08.
someone else's dog. She's angry the animal wasn't on a lead. It had the | :03:08. | :03:11.
oystercatcher chick in its mouth at that point and shook it violently | :03:11. | :03:15.
from side to side. I shouted at the dog and it actually dropped the | :03:15. | :03:19.
chick at that point, which flapped a couple of times on the ground. | :03:19. | :03:23.
And unfortunately died. Experts say it was too young to have mastered | :03:23. | :03:26.
the art of flying and would have been powerless to escape. | :03:26. | :03:31.
Oystercatchers are wading birds. Not endangered, but rare on | :03:31. | :03:34.
Guernsey's west coast. There's thought to be only ten nesting | :03:34. | :03:39.
pairs in the island. It's an offence to kill or injure a wild | :03:39. | :03:42.
bird. But getting a conviction can be difficult and conservationists | :03:42. | :03:46.
say this kind of thing is happening all too often across the island. | :03:46. | :03:51.
was clearly an accident. But an avoidable one. There are vulnerable | :03:51. | :03:55.
birds in the area and signs highlighting that. We would ask dog | :03:55. | :04:01.
walkers to remember that wildlife does need protecting. This site is | :04:01. | :04:05.
internationally recognised for the precious wildlife it attracts. The | :04:05. | :04:11.
Environment Department says dogs should not be walked here. | :04:11. | :04:13.
Conservationists say three other breeding pairs have been | :04:13. | :04:16.
unsuccessful, and this incident could have taken away the only | :04:16. | :04:24.
chick to have fledged. Jersey Police are still looking for | :04:24. | :04:28.
two young men, following an alleged assault on a five year old boy in | :04:28. | :04:31.
Grands Vaux. The police are still patrolling the Nicholson Park area | :04:31. | :04:34.
after the child said he was assaulted by the men on Tuesday | :04:34. | :04:38.
afternoon. One of them may have been wearing a hat and the other | :04:38. | :04:41.
wasn't wearing a shirt. They're asking any witnesses to come | :04:41. | :04:44.
forward. Are there enough women in Guernsey | :04:44. | :04:50.
politics? One former deputy doesn't think so, and wants to see a | :04:50. | :04:53.
certain number of seats in the Island's government set aside for | :04:53. | :04:56.
females. Penny Elderfield has this report. | :04:56. | :05:00.
Just some of the women that make up Guernsey's government. With eight | :05:00. | :05:03.
female politicians, including two who've made it to a minister | :05:03. | :05:08.
position, the States is by no means a male only environment. But they | :05:08. | :05:12.
are a little out numbered, and now it's being suggested a third of the | :05:12. | :05:16.
seats should be reserved just for women candidates. | :05:16. | :05:19.
You would gradually build up a corps of women that, in fact, in | :05:19. | :05:23.
time, would show the electorate that women can do this job just as | :05:23. | :05:33.
:05:33. | :05:34. | ||
well as men. And show women voters they could do it just as well as | :05:34. | :05:38.
any men. And in time, it would become more normal to see women | :05:38. | :05:45.
sitting in the States, doing jobs in the States. There are many | :05:45. | :05:49.
reasons why we may not get the number of women standing for the | :05:49. | :05:52.
States that some would like to see. But is it really necessary to | :05:53. | :05:57.
change way Guernsey elects its government to make it happen? | :05:57. | :06:01.
should we make a rule to guarantee women will be elected? That is up | :06:01. | :06:06.
to the people who are voting to put the person, be it a man or woman, | :06:06. | :06:09.
they believe will represent them with honesty and integrity. With an | :06:09. | :06:12.
election looming, it's unlikely the States would make any changes at | :06:12. | :06:15.
this stage. But, if enough female candidates stand, there's nothing | :06:15. | :06:24.
to stop the voters making that decision. | :06:24. | :06:27.

What do you think of customer service in Jersey? That's the | :06:43. | :06:46.
question at the heart of a new awards scheme designed to recognise | :06:46. | :06:50.
the island's most helpful and friendly workers. The 2011 Jersey | :06:50. | :06:53.
Customer Service Awards will be given out in seven categories | :06:53. | :06:58.
including: Best Team, Best Self- Employed Person, and States Worker. | :06:58. | :07:02.
Edward Sault asks: Are we being served? | :07:02. | :07:06.
That green goes so well with madam's eyes. | :07:06. | :07:09.
Are You Being Served's Mrs Slocombe may best be known for her brusque | :07:09. | :07:12.
yet memorable approach to customers making audiences laugh. But it | :07:12. | :07:21.
seems customer service in Jersey is no longer a laughing matter. | :07:21. | :07:27.
Thank you very much. We have all had service in shops in the island | :07:27. | :07:30.
where we have either been treated impeccably or left invisible. There | :07:30. | :07:34.
is a new scheme designed to promote good service in the island. Claire | :07:34. | :07:39.
is responsible. Why are you doing this? We thought it was a good time | :07:39. | :07:42.
to reward people doing good service. So many people are complaining | :07:42. | :07:47.
service is not good enough, but there are some really good guys. We | :07:47. | :07:52.
wanted to reward them and give an extra trophy for it. Is service | :07:52. | :08:02.
really that the awful here? No, it isn't. People are very proud of | :08:02. | :08:07.
working in Jersey. That is why we want to give them a reward for it. | :08:07. | :08:15.
What do the punters think? What do you think of the customer service | :08:15. | :08:21.
in Jersey? It is very good. Probably better than at home. We | :08:21. | :08:30.
would expect that on holiday. am from America, it is Devon League | :08:30. | :08:37.
the event, it is good but could use some improvement. I think we need | :08:37. | :08:42.
to leave the final word to the Queen of customer service. Do you | :08:42. | :08:50.
think I should wear it up or down? Down. | :08:50. | :08:54.
One of Guernsey Police's most ferocious officers is due to retire | :08:54. | :08:58.
at the end of the month. He goes by the name of Rebel, and he's been | :08:58. | :09:01.
sniffing out criminal activity in the island for the last six years. | :09:01. | :09:05.
Before he leaves the force for life on civvy street, Mike Wilkins has | :09:05. | :09:15.
:09:15. | :09:22. | ||
Rebel has done it again. I think he has found the evidence. He has been | :09:22. | :09:26.
serving the police force for six years, one of the most dedicated | :09:26. | :09:33.
officers. I am pleased to say he is now being well handled by his dog | :09:33. | :09:40.
handler. What is revel macro like to work with? Fantastic, a real | :09:40. | :09:46.
character. Really friendly, almost all the time but he can turn into | :09:46. | :09:55.
aggressive mode when he needs to. He is after all an attack dog and | :09:55. | :09:58.
like many in this world he has to multi-tasking. Finding evidence is | :09:58. | :10:08.
:10:08. | :10:09. | ||
one of the things he does. I sometimes find myself -- myself | :10:09. | :10:19.
:10:19. | :10:20. | ||
in difficult situations and this is I am feeling the full force of | :10:20. | :10:27.
Guernsey Police. I think I have had enough. I will let go now. There we | :10:27. | :10:37.
:10:37. | :10:37. | ||
go. Survive that, a controlled attack. You can feel the force even | :10:37. | :10:45.
with that protective padding. Obviously, a highly trained dog. | :10:45. | :10:49.
Some people will be thinking, when they retire, are they safe to go | :10:49. | :10:55.
back into the community. Most police dogs are safe. There will be | :10:55. | :11:00.
the odd one or two. He is entirely safe, I am happy he will not attack | :11:00. | :11:05.
anybody. This is certainly one rebel who has | :11:05. | :11:15.
:11:15. | :11:19. | ||
The Now it's time for the weather. Hello, good evening. We have some | :11:19. | :11:23.
showers and even some brighter weather in the afternoon. After | :11:23. | :11:28.
this morning's rain, a chance to dry out. Some of the rain was | :11:28. | :11:33.
intense last night and this morning. The good news is that is moving out | :11:33. | :11:40.
of the way and it will become dry with light winds. A new area of low | :11:40. | :11:46.
pressure is approaching by lunchtime on Saturday. Giving the | :11:46. | :11:55.
risk of showers. That was the rain earlier today. With intense bursts. | :11:55. | :12:01.
Bat has no doubt of the way. Overnight, it is a dry story. Some | :12:01. | :12:09.
light showers. A cloudy day, temperatures down to 13 Celsius. | :12:09. | :12:15.
Tomorrow, a lot of cloud to start the day but it should clear giving | :12:15. | :12:23.
sunny spells, up to 21 Celsius. Winds from the north west. In the | :12:23. | :12:32.
early evening, the shower risk returns. This is the coastal waters | :12:32. | :12:42.
:12:42. | :12:54. | ||
forecast. Showers by the evening. And, of the times of high water. | :12:54. | :12:58.
The forecast as we move into Saturday and Sunday, certainly | :12:58. | :13:04.
cooler, down to 18 Celsius. There is the risk on Saturday in the | :13:04. | :13:08.
afternoon of more persistent rain from the South briefly. Plenty of | :13:08. | :13:16.
The fog and wet weather in Alderney this morning disrupted the Alderney | :13:17. | :13:19.
Week schedule. One victim was the ever popular man-powered flight | :13:19. | :13:23.
competition. Here's some pictures from last year's event. This year's | :13:23. | :13:27. |
