A Jersey teenager is seriously injured after an attack by a polar

bear in the Arctic. We speak to Patrick Flinders' father. I said,

:00:21.:00:27.

do not tell me he is dead. He said, he is injured. I said, that is good

:00:27.:00:31.

enough for me. Olympic dreams, but find out what

:00:31.:00:34.

this Channel Islander has to get over before she even gets to the

:00:34.:00:36.

Olympics. And closer to home, Guernsey

:00:36.:00:39.

football club prepare to launch their first campaign in the English

:00:39.:00:49.
:00:49.:00:54.

It Jersey teenager has been seriously injured trying to save a

:00:54.:01:00.

friend from a polar bear attack. 16-year-old Patrick Flinders was

:01:00.:01:03.

one of three Channel Islanders on a trip to the Arctic, organised by

:01:03.:01:10.

the British Schools Exploring Society. A polar bear attacked one

:01:10.:01:13.

group this morning as they camped, killing one 17-year-old boy and

:01:13.:01:19.

injuring four other people including Patrick.

:01:19.:01:23.

Training for the trip of a lifetime. Patrick Flinders pictured before he

:01:23.:01:26.

set off to explore the Svalbard Islands, off the north coast of

:01:26.:01:35.

Norway. Little did Patrick and his team know what lay in store. A

:01:35.:01:37.

polar bear attack early this morning which killed one teenager

:01:37.:01:43.

and seriously injured four others, including Patrick. At home in

:01:43.:01:46.

Jersey, Patrick's dad Terry could only watch the news roll in just

:01:46.:01:56.
:01:56.:01:56.

hours after getting the phone call every parent dreads. I said, do not

:01:56.:02:03.

tell me he is dead. He said, he is injured. I said, that is good

:02:03.:02:07.

enough for me. The polar bear attacked Patrick and

:02:07.:02:10.

his friends as they lay asleep in their tent. Patrick had famously

:02:11.:02:15.

boasted that he was not scared of polar bears before he set off. True

:02:15.:02:19.

to his word, he stood between the animal and a team mate, punching it

:02:19.:02:26.

to save his friend, before of the creature turned on him.

:02:26.:02:32.

He was trying to fend off the Polar Bear by hitting it on the nose. Why,

:02:32.:02:39.

I do not know. But he did. And the polar bear attacked him. With his

:02:39.:02:44.

right pop, across his face and his arm.

:02:44.:02:47.

The polar bear that attacked the group was eventually shot. Patrick

:02:47.:02:50.

is now in hospital in Norway where his condition is not to described

:02:50.:02:53.

as life threatening. Terry is hoping to have him home within a

:02:53.:02:59.

week. Patrick was not the only Channel

:02:59.:03:03.

Islander on the expedition. Herm teenager Richard Bailey was also

:03:03.:03:09.

there. He was not injured and has now been taken off the ice. The 17-

:03:09.:03:13.

year-old Kyle Gouveira from Jersey was on the trip as well. He was

:03:13.:03:16.

sent home early because he suffered severe frost nip in the extreme

:03:16.:03:26.
:03:26.:03:27.

Arctic conditions. I spoke to Kyle a little earlier and asked him how

:03:27.:03:34.

much training the group was given against polar bears. We had a

:03:34.:03:38.

training weekend a few months ago. We learnt about rifles, how to

:03:38.:03:48.
:03:48.:03:52.

clean them, how to fire them. We learnt about watching forebears.

:03:52.:03:56.

And we did some practice bear what is it do the night just to get a

:03:56.:04:06.
:04:06.:04:07.

feel. -- bear watches through the night. It could have been used. How

:04:07.:04:13.

do you feel about that? I am a little traumatised to think

:04:13.:04:18.

that it could have been me. I was lucky to be sent home. I had frost

:04:18.:04:25.

nip, but luckily I did not lose my fingers. The group that got

:04:25.:04:31.

attacked will be very scared, I am not sure exactly. Probably mixed

:04:31.:04:34.

emotions, and all of the other groups as well because there are a

:04:34.:04:39.

lot of groups, and they will be worried if it will happen to them.

:04:39.:04:43.

Do you have any there -- any regrets?

:04:43.:04:48.

I have no regrets and I thoroughly enjoyed it and I knew what the

:04:48.:04:55.

risks were. It is a freak accident. But I learnt so much.

:04:55.:04:58.

In other news today, up to ten people face losing their jobs at

:04:58.:05:01.

Jersey Pottery. The ceramics company, which employs 200 staff,

:05:01.:05:04.

is selling its main site which has been in the Gorey village since

:05:04.:05:09.

1946. The building will belong to Dandara Properties from spring next

:05:09.:05:13.

year. Jersey Pottery will close down its pottery making factory on

:05:13.:05:18.

site. Jonathan Jones, the director, says it is a shame but staff will

The London Olympics might be a year away but crunch time comes a lot

:05:43.:05:47.

sooner for one Channel Islands hopefuls. Badminton player

:05:47.:05:50.

Elisabeth Cann from Jersey has to breeze through the World

:05:50.:05:53.

Championships first. The competition starts on Monday and

:05:53.:05:58.

could gain Elizabeth a vital point for her Olympic qualifying campaign.

:05:58.:06:04.

Our correspondent has been to watch her train in Milton Keynes.

:06:04.:06:09.

Intensive training for England from just 13 years old. Elisabeth Cann

:06:09.:06:12.

is working up to the London Olympics but to have a chance of

:06:12.:06:15.

hitting a home victory there, she needs to smash some sets at the

:06:15.:06:25.
:06:25.:06:25.

World Championships. They are major championships and there there is a

:06:25.:06:32.

lot of ranking towards Olympic qualifying so it is important.

:06:32.:06:37.

that an indicator for 2012? Not so much an indicator but if you

:06:37.:06:46.

do well, I'd caused in your favour. It helps with your world ranking. -

:06:46.:06:50.

- it goes in your favour. England's number one singles

:06:51.:06:53.

champion and just claiming the team and individual bronze medals at

:06:53.:06:56.

last year's Commonwealth Games, the pressure is on for her. The titles

:06:56.:07:00.

are testament to her drive from a young age which she did not feel

:07:00.:07:08.

the Channel Islands could support. There are not the support structure

:07:08.:07:12.

has in place in the island, and you need other people to play. With a

:07:12.:07:16.

back injury now behind her, cutting a fighting form is still a mighty

:07:16.:07:25.

task but one she is tackling head- How important are the Olympics?

:07:25.:07:29.

That would be the absolute pinnacle of everything. Hitting the right

:07:29.:07:32.

shots will certainly bring her Olympic dream a step closer to

:07:32.:07:36.

reality. The most important development in

:07:36.:07:41.

Guernsey sport in the last century. That is how Guernsey FC's entry

:07:41.:07:43.

into the Combined Counties Football League Division One is being

:07:43.:07:51.

described. The first match of the season kicks off tomorrow.

:07:51.:07:54.

Training hard ahead of their first competitive match against Knaphill

:07:54.:08:01.

FC. Win or lose, the result will go down in history as Guernsey FC

:08:01.:08:05.

start a new chapter in local football. More than 1,000 fans are

:08:05.:08:09.

expected to fill the stands to witness it. Along with the support

:08:09.:08:18.

team that have helped them get there. There will be nerves. The

:08:18.:08:26.

whole place will be in -- gripped with excitement. We are waiting to

:08:26.:08:33.

say who gets there with the selection. But whoever gets a

:08:33.:08:39.

starting shirt, I think the support will be there. We are very excited.

:08:39.:08:43.

Based on the support we have had during the friendlies, I hope to

:08:44.:08:49.

see all of those new friends again. It is not only the players that

:08:49.:08:53.

have been putting in the effort ahead of the game. Work has also

:08:53.:09:01.

been taking place to make sure the pitches up to scratch.

:09:01.:09:08.

It is not just me doing it. We have had good comments were lately. We

:09:08.:09:13.

will see if the comments could coming as the season progresses!

:09:13.:09:15.

recent friendly matches are anything to go by, Guernsey should

:09:16.:09:19.

have plenty of home support and as the players will only get one

:09:19.:09:22.

chance to win the Scot's first ever competitive match, every chant will

:09:22.:09:32.
:09:32.:09:33.

be appreciated. The weekend is finally here. But in

:09:33.:09:38.

Alderney, every day has felt like Friday this week. There have been

:09:38.:09:48.
:09:48.:10:05.

par rates and parties. Emma Thomas This weekend is definitely the

:10:06.:10:15.

weekend to go to Alderney. There there are lots of free activities.

:10:15.:10:20.

This team are waiting for the raft race to begin.

:10:20.:10:25.

We are very serious about not coming first.

:10:25.:10:33.

There was serious cheating, mostly by the police.

:10:33.:10:38.

The lifeboat, pouring oil of her troubled waters. After a bit more

:10:39.:10:43.

cheating, and a lot of scrambling, the pirates were first over the

:10:43.:10:47.

line. We did a lot of work for this. We

:10:47.:10:53.

all took 10, tying a rope, topping the water melon to throw at the

:10:53.:11:01.

lifeboats. It was hard work but we got there.

:11:01.:11:06.

What does it feel like to win? was great.

:11:06.:11:12.

The population of old and a doubles during the festival. Here are the

:11:12.:11:22.
:11:22.:11:47.

I want to be in that raft race next year. Now let's get a look at the

:11:47.:11:56.

We can expect some rain in the form of showers on Saturday and Sunday.

:11:56.:12:00.

There may well be more persistent rain tomorrow afternoon, coming up

:12:00.:12:08.

from the South. Looking at the big picture, there are areas of low

:12:08.:12:15.

pressure surrounding, and no sign of things settle in. This high

:12:15.:12:21.

pressure ridge will not stay and deliver -- these areas of low

:12:21.:12:29.

pressure will generate showers. Perhaps even more persistent rain.

:12:29.:12:33.

Through Sunday, after a fine start, you will see a scattering of

:12:33.:12:41.

showers. Overnight, fairly quiet. One or two showers but mainly dry

:12:41.:12:46.

with quite a lot of cloud. Temperatures down to 13 or 14

:12:46.:12:51.

degrees. There will be some brightness tomorrow, and perhaps in

:12:51.:12:55.

the middle of the afternoon the risk of more persistent rain before

:12:55.:13:00.

the sunshine comes back out. 19 degrees will be the highest

:13:00.:13:10.
:13:10.:13:14.

temperature. Here is the coastal waters forecast. Times of high

:13:14.:13:24.

water now. Messy conditions for surfers, up to around two are three

:13:24.:13:34.
:13:34.:13:34.

feet. Continuing risk of showers for Sunday. Increasingly breezy

:13:34.:13:39.

with some had -- some heavy showers and the risk of some thunder in the

:13:39.:13:46.
