Good evening and welcome. Tonight we have the latest on the multiple | :00:11. | :00:16.
stabbings in St Helier as the police start piecing together why | :00:16. | :00:24.
, were murdered. We have got six victims who met their deaths there | :00:24. | :00:29.
yesterday afternoon and me and my staff are working hard to establish | :00:29. | :00:34.
the facts bulls star up plus a community in shock as friends and | :00:34. | :00:38.
neighbours tried to come to terms with the horror. It is really sad | :00:38. | :00:43.
what has happened. It has never happened in Jersey before. It is | :00:43. | :00:53.
| :00:53. | :01:00. | ||
especially sad because it is Polish Police in Jersey are still trying | :01:00. | :01:04.
to piece together how six people, three of them children, were killed | :01:04. | :01:08.
in a knife attack in St Helier yesterday. Police were called to a | :01:08. | :01:13.
flat in Victoria Crescent just after 3 o'clock in the afternoon. A | :01:13. | :01:17.
30-year-old man has been arrested and is in hospital after undergoing | :01:17. | :01:22.
surgery. Police confirmed two families were involved. Edwards | :01:22. | :01:28.
told is that the scene. What is the latest? There is still shock and | :01:28. | :01:31.
disbelief in this neighbourhood as residents and the police come to | :01:31. | :01:36.
terms with what happened. Victoria presence in Upper Midvale Road in | :01:36. | :01:40.
St Helier remain sealed off tonight as the police and local strike to | :01:40. | :01:44.
piece together yesterday's shocking events. The it should have been | :01:44. | :01:50.
acquired, summer's Sunday afternoon, but just after 3 o'clock the | :01:50. | :01:54.
relative calm and tranquillity of this leafy part of St Helier was | :01:54. | :01:58.
transformed into an horrific crimes in. I was just finishing the garden | :01:59. | :02:02.
and my father and I were sitting out here and we heard these | :02:02. | :02:07.
children screaming. It was real screening. He said to me, what was | :02:07. | :02:12.
that? I said it was children screaming. It was not like a | :02:13. | :02:18.
playful scream. They were really screaming. Today the police | :02:18. | :02:20.
described the traumatic scene emergency services came face-to- | :02:20. | :02:28.
face with. Paramedics and police officers as they arrived treated | :02:28. | :02:38.
| :02:38. | :02:38. | ||
some of victims outside Victoria Crescent on the present itself, and | :02:38. | :02:42.
the other victims were found inside the premises. There were initially | :02:42. | :02:47.
two who were found outside and four inside. As the police try to piece | :02:47. | :02:51.
together what happened, today they confirmed that one of the families | :02:51. | :02:57.
involved was of Polish origin. Indications are that one of the | :02:57. | :03:01.
families was Polish. I am not in a position to elaborate further on | :03:01. | :03:06.
the relationships between either the suspect or the victims. | :03:06. | :03:12.
Hopefully, you understand, it is important that we make contacts | :03:13. | :03:20.
with the broader family. I do not want them hearing about this, with | :03:20. | :03:24.
the greatest respect, through the media. I wanted to hear about it | :03:24. | :03:27.
from my staff will start those living in this neighbourhood say | :03:27. | :03:30.
they have been deeply affected by the events that have unfolded on | :03:30. | :03:35.
their doorstep and they are shocked. This is a very quiet, happy | :03:35. | :03:39.
neighbourhood. For something like this to happen is really shocking. | :03:39. | :03:47.
Really shocked, really sad. I think everyone I know it like families | :03:47. | :03:51.
and things like this had never happened in Jersey and I am still | :03:51. | :03:57.
shaking, it is unbelievable. I knew them because they were shopping | :03:57. | :04:02.
here and I knew them over the years because it is a small community. | :04:02. | :04:08.
Everybody knows everybody. This lunchtime two recovery trucks | :04:08. | :04:11.
arrived at the scene on Upper Midvale Road. They took away a car | :04:11. | :04:17.
covered in silver sheeting for further investigations. Not far | :04:17. | :04:20.
away flowers were laid to remember those who lost their lives here so | :04:20. | :04:26.
tragically. Do we know any more about the | :04:26. | :04:32.
victims this evening? Yes, details have been emerging throughout the | :04:32. | :04:36.
day about the six people who were killed yesterday afternoon. The six | :04:37. | :04:41.
victims were from two different families. The first family, her | :04:41. | :04:44.
mother and her two young children and the women's father are believed | :04:45. | :04:49.
to be Polish citizens will stop the second, a mother and daughter, are | :04:49. | :04:53.
mixed Jersey and Polish citizens. None of the names have been | :04:53. | :04:59.
released. The police still have somebody in custody? Yes, we | :04:59. | :05:02.
understand the man under police guard in Jersey General Hospital is | :05:02. | :05:06.
to be questioned over the murder of his two children, wife and father- | :05:06. | :05:13.
in-law, along with a family friend and her daughter. A 30-year-old man | :05:13. | :05:16.
has been arrested, but the police have not yet been able to question | :05:16. | :05:23.
him. As the police continue their investigation, the community is | :05:23. | :05:27.
trying to deal with what has happened on the streets of St | :05:27. | :05:31.
Helier. Shock and shame are two emissions that are emerging among | :05:31. | :05:36.
many people. Churches have been held in special services today to | :05:36. | :05:41.
help islanders cope with the trauma of the event. | :05:41. | :05:44.
As Jersey's community tries to come to terms with what has happened, | :05:44. | :05:50.
the island's gentle way of life feels tense, emotions are raw, and | :05:50. | :05:55.
today people look on searching for answers, but all there is his death, | :05:55. | :06:00.
shock and disbelief. It is really sad what has happened. It has never | :06:00. | :06:05.
happened in Jersey before. It is especially sad because it is Polish | :06:05. | :06:14.
people and children. And the youngest one was two years old. | :06:14. | :06:21.
This is really unacceptable. It is just a terrible tragedy. There is a | :06:21. | :06:26.
book of condolence at the town hall which some hope will help numb the | :06:26. | :06:30.
pain. The stabbings are being reported around the world and for | :06:30. | :06:32.
the Polish community the brittle headlines have prompted an | :06:33. | :06:38.
outpouring of grief and anger. On Polish websites Polish people in St | :06:38. | :06:41.
Helier are talking about the shame it is bringing their community, | :06:41. | :06:46.
about the anger that so many people have been killed, and that is why | :06:46. | :06:51.
Jersey's chief of police call for calm today. Such an incident will | :06:51. | :06:56.
raise tensions locally and I appeal to everyone to remain calm and | :06:56. | :07:00.
dignified and allow my officers to continue with what is a complex, | :07:00. | :07:04.
demanding and very difficult investigation. In the Polish | :07:04. | :07:08.
delicatessens, discussion turns to discuss as they contemplate the | :07:08. | :07:16.
horrific events that took place. are in shock about what happened. | :07:16. | :07:20.
In Jersey something like this has never happened. It is a shame it | :07:20. | :07:28.
for the Polish people. I am in shock as well. I do not know what | :07:28. | :07:37.
he is doing. The Polish community is terrified and ashamed, a shames | :07:37. | :07:41.
interestingly because they were Polish, because that person was | :07:41. | :07:47.
Polish, and because there are about 5000 Polish people in Joseph. We | :07:47. | :07:52.
want to be accepted. How can a winded community begin to hear | :07:52. | :07:57.
itself? Is it too early? I am sure they will fill this personally and | :07:57. | :08:03.
this sense of shame as well as deep sorrow that this all happened among | :08:03. | :08:06.
people who as Catholic Christians uphold the value of life and the | :08:06. | :08:14.
dignity of the human person. community gets behind bringing a | :08:14. | :08:19.
sense of closure to the suffering families and friends and offer | :08:19. | :08:23.
support in the way of counselling or anything else. In the weeks and | :08:23. | :08:30.
days ahead, which will continue to be difficult, but also we should | :08:30. | :08:35.
let the police handled this matter. The horror of six deaths on this | :08:35. | :08:39.
holiday island is still sinking in and for many here it will be | :08:39. | :08:47.
something they will never forget. These events have shocked everybody | :08:47. | :08:50.
and the fact three children were killed has added to the sense of | :08:50. | :08:55.
horror, but for friends, neighbours and those first on the scene it | :08:55. | :08:58.
must have been a particularly difficult time. Earlier, Boyd | :08:58. | :09:03.
Bennie, the director of Jersey's Samaritans came into the studio, | :09:03. | :09:08.
and I asked him how the paramedics and police could have been affected. | :09:08. | :09:11.
It must have been very distressing and sometimes people who have been | :09:11. | :09:17.
in very distressing situations like that have flashbacks occurring | :09:17. | :09:20.
afterwards that may disturb their pattern of sleep. That is why it is | :09:20. | :09:25.
very important to be able to talk to someone. The Samaritans are | :09:25. | :09:28.
always there on the end of the phone. We have had reports from | :09:28. | :09:33.
neighbours who heard the children screaming. What would you say to | :09:33. | :09:39.
them? They must have a great sense of helplessness I suppose. | :09:39. | :09:42.
helplessness sometimes makes people very anxious. They feel they should | :09:42. | :09:46.
have done something, could have done something, or perhaps they | :09:46. | :09:51.
feel worried about their own safety. Again it is very important to be | :09:51. | :09:55.
able to talk to someone and offload some of that stress and anxiety, | :09:55. | :10:00.
which is what the Samaritans do a. His is something that happens | :10:00. | :10:04.
immediately, or does it take a while for the shop and the horror | :10:04. | :10:09.
to sink him? It can take a little while. It can take days, maybe even | :10:09. | :10:16.
longer. Although there will be help, a lot of agencies, immediately | :10:16. | :10:21.
after the event, those made tend to disappear after a while and that is | :10:21. | :10:25.
when it is important to know there is still someone who people can | :10:25. | :10:30.
talk to and the Samaritans are always there. Boyd Bennie from the | :10:30. | :10:35.
Samaritans. Turning to today's avenues and a Guernsey man is | :10:35. | :10:38.
recovering in hospital after being involved in a crash at the | :10:38. | :10:44.
weekend's sand racing. This fitted captured the moment that NIgel | :10:44. | :10:47.
Ozanne's car spun out of control and turned over on Saturday | :10:47. | :10:51.
afternoon. He is not thought to be in a serious condition. Organisers | :10:51. | :10:57.
say it lessons will be learnt. we deal with a series accent -- | :10:57. | :11:01.
accident like this one, they will be a debriefing once we speak to | :11:01. | :11:06.
Nigel to see what he has to say about it. He was the closest to the | :11:06. | :11:11.
scene. We will be speaking to him and if there is anything that needs | :11:11. | :11:16.
to be changed or amended to the rules, we will be doing it. | :11:16. | :11:19.
Residents near Guernsey's airport have the opportunity to learn more | :11:19. | :11:26.
about the plans for the runway. Dropping Sassoon's are being held. | :11:26. | :11:30.
The public have less than a fortnight to have their say. | :11:30. | :11:35.
The RNLI is urging people in Jersey not to use distress flares unless | :11:35. | :11:40.
there is a real emergency. Lifeboat crews were called on Saturday night | :11:40. | :11:44.
after flares were seen on the north coast. Nothing was found following | :11:44. | :11:53.
an extensive search. Now, the There is some unsettled and wet | :11:53. | :11:57.
weather in the forecast for the week ahead. It does not mean it | :11:57. | :12:02.
will rain all the time. We have had high pressure today, but to the | :12:02. | :12:08.
west this low-pressure is moving in. Overnight tonight we will see some | :12:08. | :12:12.
rain arriving. Tomorrow it will bring in some moist air and some | :12:12. | :12:16.
drizzle throughout the day. By Wednesday there is a bit of | :12:16. | :12:20.
uncertainty over what this weather front is going to do. It still | :12:20. | :12:24.
looks fairly cloudy with a risk of some rain fall in the middle of the | :12:24. | :12:29.
week. Tonight is as much milder, but with a lot of cloud around and | :12:29. | :12:34.
outbreaks of rain. Fairly light winds from the south-west by the | :12:34. | :12:42.
end of the night. Pretty mild. A grey and a damp start to the date | :12:42. | :12:46.
tomorrow. The main area of rain moves away fairly quickly. Try for | :12:46. | :12:55.
most of us in the afternoon. There will be a few spots of drizzle. Out | :12:55. | :13:05.
at sea the winds are from the south-west. The times of high | :13:05. | :13:15.
| :13:15. | :13:27. | ||
The surf is generally choppy. After a fairly dab day tomorrow we still | :13:27. | :13:31.
have a fair amount of cloud around for Wednesday and arrest of some | :13:31. | :13:35.
rain later on in the dead. By Thursday we will see some | :13:35. | :13:39.
brightness, although still the chance of a shower. By Friday it | :13:39. | :13:49.
| :13:49. | :13:52. | ||
will become one again. -- warmer again. Back to our main story and | :13:52. | :13:56.
the death of six people in a stabbing incident in St Helier | :13:56. | :13:59.
yesterday it will stop Mike Wilkins has been following the story. What | :13:59. | :14:04.
is the latest? It has been a fast developing story ever since we got | :14:04. | :14:08.
word of the rising numbers of dead. The police told us that Jersey is | :14:08. | :14:13.
one of the safest places in the Western world, but that is little | :14:13. | :14:16.
comfort for friends and family who are coming to terms with their | :14:16. | :14:20.
losses, especially when so many of the victims were young. Murder in | :14:20. | :14:25.
the Channel Islands is rare. There has not been a murder in Jersey for | :14:25. | :14:29.
seven years, so to get six in one afternoon is beyond belief. There | :14:29. | :14:39.
| :14:39. | :14:40. | ||
will be a special, a Catholic Mass on church on Thursday. If you would | :14:41. | :14:50.
