Good evening and welcome to the BBC in the Channel Islands. Here are

:00:09.:00:14.

the top stories tonight: The police enquiry into Sunday's stabbings

:00:14.:00:18.

continues as the last victims are removed from the former family home

:00:18.:00:23.

in St Helier. Plus friends talk about their shock that this once

:00:23.:00:31.

Apart so violently. He was a calm, quiet guy and I never saw him lose

:00:31.:00:39.

his temper. I know he loved his children. And in Guernsey we take a

:00:39.:00:49.
:00:49.:00:58.

look at the proposals to increase Good evening. The last two victims'

:00:58.:01:02.

bodies of Sunday's multiple stabbings have been removed from

:01:02.:01:07.

the building today. Meanwhile, the main suspect, the man suspected of

:01:07.:01:11.

stabbing six people to death, has been named locally. He is being

:01:11.:01:15.

treated in hospital where he is under arrest and under armed guard.

:01:15.:01:19.

Mike Wilkins reports on an island trying to come to terms with the

:01:19.:01:23.

shocking events. Two days after they were stabbed to

:01:23.:01:27.

death some of the bodies were removed from the apartment. It came

:01:27.:01:31.

as a surprise to many who had assumed it had happened days ago.

:01:31.:01:36.

As each painful day passes a clearer picture is emerging of what

:01:36.:01:40.

actually happened and the human cost. This is a tender glimpse of

:01:40.:01:45.

what appeared to be the perfect family. But this union of Lubbock

:01:45.:01:49.

was to be brutally destroyed at the end of a knife. The police are

:01:49.:01:52.

still waiting to question the man they suspect of stabbing to death

:01:52.:01:58.

the six people. The 30 year-old Polish man has been named locally

:01:58.:02:01.

as Damian Rzeszowski. His wife Izabella and their daughter and

:02:01.:02:05.

their toddler were among those killed, along with his father in

:02:05.:02:11.

law. One of Izabella's best friends, Marta De La Haye and her five-year-

:02:11.:02:16.

old daughter Julia were also killed. Dominika was a friend and she says

:02:16.:02:21.

she cannot believe that children are gone. I looked at the pictures

:02:21.:02:25.

of those children because I knew them. I knew her little boy because

:02:25.:02:32.

he was the same age as my boy and I knew the daughter as well. They

:02:32.:02:38.

were like children, they are innocent. They were little angels

:02:38.:02:46.

they bring a shine to your home. It is just... I am just horrified.

:02:46.:02:50.

Meanwhile reports that Izabella was pregnant by another man have been

:02:50.:02:54.

ruled out by Jersey police following her post mortem. The

:02:54.:02:58.

police chief has been reassuring islanders and signing a book of

:02:58.:03:08.
:03:08.:03:10.

condolence. Going back over my career of 31 years, there was an

:03:10.:03:14.

extreme murder case several years ago, but it is a very unusual event

:03:14.:03:19.

on Jersey. Jersey is a wounded community and this holiday island

:03:19.:03:24.

will never quite be the same. As details emerge about the

:03:24.:03:28.

families involved, the island is trying to come to terms with the

:03:28.:03:32.

events. A special Mass has been held in Polish for the deeply

:03:32.:03:42.

affected community. In troubled times Polish people

:03:42.:03:52.

have been turning to their fate for comfort. Words to ease the pain can

:03:52.:03:56.

only go so far as people look on searching for answers. The Catholic

:03:56.:04:02.

Church of Our Lady in St Martin has put on a special Polish mass to

:04:02.:04:06.

commemorate the mothers, children and grand parent who lost their

:04:06.:04:10.

lives in the brittle knife attacks in St Helier. It is hoped a few

:04:10.:04:14.

moments of song and prayer will help the horrors to start to sink

:04:14.:04:21.

in and to enable the Community to begin to grieve. But for many it is

:04:21.:04:26.

all just too much as words and Hames contrast to the stark

:04:26.:04:31.

brutality so extraordinary on a small island communities such as

:04:31.:04:37.

Jersey. I am very sad and I want to tell all the Polish people my hard

:04:37.:04:42.

and my soul are with them. They it is not enough to say it is very sad

:04:42.:04:50.

because I do not understand it at all, what happened and why? Making

:04:50.:04:56.

sense of the events may come later as more details emerge. For now a

:04:56.:05:00.

tight-knit community remains closer than ever, paying respect and

:05:00.:05:07.

tributes to those who are no longer with us.

:05:07.:05:12.

Mike Wilkins is in the studio. As was mentioned, it is a very

:05:12.:05:17.

difficult time before the community. As you can imagine as the police

:05:17.:05:21.

are continuing with their house-to- house enquiries, supporting the

:05:21.:05:25.

forensic teams, the public could be feeling and wrestling with all

:05:25.:05:30.

kinds of emotions at the moment. The health and social services

:05:30.:05:33.

department has set up a dedicated counselling helpline and the

:05:33.:05:37.

Samaritans have also offered their support. Earlier we spoke to one of

:05:37.:05:40.

the island's consultant psychologists. He said people

:05:40.:05:46.

should not be feeling alone with their thoughts at the moment.

:05:46.:05:50.

get a whole range of different reactions. Whatever you are going

:05:50.:05:55.

through his normal. For some people they might have no reaction, for

:05:55.:05:59.

other people they might not be sleeping, they are distressed and

:05:59.:06:03.

upset. The important message is that is a normal process and they

:06:03.:06:09.

should not be worried about it. we have any ideas when the suspect

:06:09.:06:14.

might be question? The doctors have told the police it could be weeks

:06:14.:06:17.

before Damian Rzeszowski will be well enough to face questioning.

:06:17.:06:22.

Meanwhile, the Polish consul will be coming to Jersey on Thursday.

:06:22.:06:26.

Monika Panasiuk will be meeting the authorities and offering support to

:06:26.:06:32.

some people who may be feeling confused, upset and angry. The mike,

:06:32.:06:37.

thank you very much. Turning now to other news today and

:06:37.:06:42.

three men have appeared in court accused of rape in Guernsey. The

:06:42.:06:45.

incident is said to have occurred at a private residence on the

:06:45.:06:51.

island on Sunday morning. The men, aged 27, 29th and 39, are accused

:06:51.:06:56.

of unlawful sexual intercourse with a woman in her twenties. Two of the

:06:56.:06:59.

men face charges of indecent assault and one is accused of

:06:59.:07:04.

attempted rape. All three have remanded -- been remanded in

:07:04.:07:09.

custody. The man who was in charge of Jersey

:07:09.:07:13.

police or part of the island's historic abuse investigation was

:07:13.:07:16.

questioned by a Scrutiny Panel today. David Warcup believes a

:07:16.:07:20.

recent report into financial management of the investigation

:07:20.:07:24.

lacks objectivity. There review hopes to establish whether senior

:07:24.:07:28.

investigating officer, Lenny harbour, was not involved in the

:07:28.:07:32.

report into the financial planning of the investigation. The panel say

:07:32.:07:37.

they are starting to get answers. As you enter be different witnesses

:07:37.:07:41.

you get another piece of the picture. You have to reconcile with

:07:41.:07:45.

what they say to people who have spoken to as previously, or with

:07:45.:07:50.

written evidence. It does not fall into place like a jigsaw puzzle.

:07:50.:07:55.

There are some jarring edges to the different pieces of evidence.

:07:55.:08:00.

Parents in Guernsey could be allowed up to six months' maternity

:08:00.:08:04.

leave if the findings of a new report accepted. The UK allows up

:08:04.:08:09.

to one year's leave, but the report says what they have come up with

:08:09.:08:14.

for Guernsey is a sensible compromise.

:08:14.:08:18.

Angelica wants a little brother or sister. But her mum cannot afford

:08:18.:08:23.

the cost or the time off work. have to be responsible for that

:08:23.:08:28.

child and the bonding of the child as well. If you put them in a

:08:28.:08:33.

nursery, you do not get that precious time with them. If I have

:08:33.:08:38.

another child, I want to bond with them. At the moment Guernsey women

:08:38.:08:43.

have no legal right to burn -- maternity leave, but the

:08:43.:08:48.

consultation document has a list of benefits that may be introduced. It

:08:48.:08:53.

includes increasing maternity allowance to 180 a week.

:08:53.:09:00.

They could get as much as six months off. I do not they -- think

:09:00.:09:04.

they should have it as a right, but nobody should be forced back to

:09:04.:09:09.

work. I think it will put a lot of young people out of work.

:09:09.:09:13.

Definitely. The rest of the world has some sort of scheme in place

:09:13.:09:17.

and the fact Guernsey does not put it behind the times. Hunter Adam

:09:17.:09:23.

told me changes are necessary. Guernsey thought they should be

:09:23.:09:31.

part of the UN Convention for equality and lack of discrimination

:09:31.:09:35.

against women. Part of that is when women are pregnant and maternity

:09:35.:09:41.

benefits. The consultation finishes at the end of September. For

:09:41.:09:47.

Angelica her wishes for a brother or sister may take a bit longer.

:09:47.:09:57.
:09:57.:09:57.

The weather is a little unsettled across the Channel Islands. We may

:09:57.:10:01.

have some dry, bright and warm weather tomorrow, then all change

:10:01.:10:06.

again as we see some cloud on Thursday. The reason, this area of

:10:06.:10:11.

low pressure and this is strung out through the Channel. That will be a

:10:11.:10:16.

problem over the next few days. Overnight and tonight it moves to

:10:16.:10:21.

the north, which brings us warm air and sunshine. But on Thursday it

:10:21.:10:27.

drops back down again and it will bring us some patchy rain. It is so

:10:27.:10:33.

close by, I do not think things are going to change particularly fast.

:10:33.:10:37.

Some mist forming overnight and towards daunt you may get some fog

:10:37.:10:42.

patches forming. Tamara is the mystique and Gray's dark, but it

:10:42.:10:46.

will brighten up and the sunshine will come through that cloud. In

:10:46.:10:51.

the afternoon there is some sunshine to enjoy as well. It is

:10:51.:10:59.

quite humid air. The coastal waters forecast has the winds easterly for

:10:59.:11:09.
:11:09.:11:09.

tomorrow. The visibility improves as the mist and fog move out of the

:11:09.:11:19.
:11:19.:11:22.

way. Most of our surfing beaches will be relatively quiet. The

:11:22.:11:26.

forecast for Thursday is rather cloudy with a risk of some patchy

:11:26.:11:30.

rain. On Friday the weather front moves out of the way so that it

:11:30.:11:35.

brightens and we should see some sunshine for much of the day. All

:11:35.:11:39.

those Saturday is warm and dry, there is a possibility of a few

:11:39.:11:43.

showers turning up, particularly later in the day and into the early

:11:43.:11:53.
:11:53.:12:00.
