the Conservative Party Conference to find out how the Channel Islands

can help the UK out of recession. Also tonight - over schedule and

over budget, but will a new youth centre really get youngsters off

UK politicians have often criticised the Channel Islands tax

affairs, but ministers are hopeful of a breakthrough at the

Conservative Party Conference. Jersey's Deputy Chief Minister has

been in Manchester this week, raising the profile of the Channel

Islands. He says its time the Islands showed a united front to

help the UK out of recession. Our political editor Martyn Oates is

there. The annual conferences of both the

governing parties here in the coalition in the UK have attracted

interest from the States of Jersey this year. The need to TT from Mr

was with to Liberal Democrats in Birmingham a couple of weeks ago

and he joins in nets at the Conservative conference. I gather

that you managed to speak. This is the first time that the government

of Jersey is attending the Conservative conference and we

secured a speaking slot fought Senator Freddie Cohen, an

opportunity to explain what Josie tells, racing our profile and

perhaps giving advice on fiscal management to some of the

Conservative MPs. Judge see Agassi have a good storyteller by the way

we run our economies -- jersey and Guernsey. I understand you have

been talk about how plans for impact -- for economic growth could

impact on the UK. The UK has a big problem but debt, we did have that

in either Jersey or Guernsey. But certainly in Jersey we need to get

the economy going. I was that when the proposals by the Chancellor for

credit easing, at ways of getting money into businesses. If we can do

anything to assist businesses in Joseph and we will be learning

lessons from what the UK chancellor has been talking about. There is

the slightly vexed issue of the VAT loophole, which the Chancellor has

indicated he is minded to close. What is your view on that? I think

the Jersey UK relationship is about using businesses and creating

business that benefits both our economies. As the Chancellor said

in a recent question, Josie should not be using kinks in that tax code.

We have a great future we need be building business that benefits

Jersey but also is not harmful to the UK. This is your first time to

come to the conference. Key thing to will be back in future years? --

do you think. By thing this has been a valuable experience. We have

raised only profile of Jersey but I think we need to do more. I have no

doubt that the county chief minister has been attending the

conference was some years. He is on board any not here this week but

certainly we need to join Channel Island approach, raising awareness

of what the Channel Islands can do, working with the UK, to get the

benefit for both our communities. That sounds like it might be the

beginning of a new small tradition. The Jersey rugby player James

Ellershaw has been in what's being described as a serious car accident

in the UK. It's reported the 29- year-old prop forward, who joined

the island side from Old Albanian this summer, has multiple injuries

This afternoon, we received this Statement from Bill Dempsey, the

chairman of the Jersey Rugby Football Club. He says, "Everyone

at Jersey RFC has been shocked and saddened by the news about James,

and our thoughts are with him and his family. We are anxiously

awaiting more news on his progress, and hoping that the next bulletins

are positive ones - we wish James a swift and full recovery." A

teenager has been sentenced to three years and five months youth

detention after holding up a petrol station. Rhys Mourant went into the

Co-op En Route petrol station in St Martins in June of this year. He

brandished a knife but ended up leaving empty-handed.

A 23-year-old man has been arrested and released by police in Jersey

after an alleged incident involving a 46-year-old woman in the early

hours of this morning. Jersey Police and forensic officers have

been carrying out enquiries around Harve des pas in St Helier - but

they're still trying to establish exactly where the incident took

place and want witnesses to contact them.

It's been widely reported that French business tycoon Bernard

Tapie has agreed to buy troubled online gambling operator Full Tilt

Poker. Full Tilt had its gaming licence revoked by Alderney

Gambling Commission last week, following charges in the US

relating to money laundering and fraud. The agreement, which should

see tens of millions of pounds in frozen player accounts being

refunded to customers, will only happen if certain conditions are

met. The first of which is a favourable resolution with the

After years of delays, a former pub in Guernsey is close to reopening

as a youth centre. The Caves de Bordeaux in St Peter Port was

bought by a charity in 2008. But will it really get youngsters off

the streets? Mike Wilkins has been to see how it's shaping up.

With just weeks until it's due to open, it's fair to say the man

behind this re-development is in an optimistic mood. Despite the

current state of the building, this former pub is scheduled to open as

a youth centre next month. And when it's already cost �800,000, there's

a lot at stake. Certainly here in this part of town there's a great

need for some work for your people to gather and to receive some

support and access to those areas that the island can help them

perhaps improve their opportunities with. The ground floor will be a

youth cafe, while the first floor more of a chill-out zone and

learning corner, but do youngsters feel it's really needed? This best

young people during half term, and there's certainly some scope for

them to leave their mark. The owners of Guernsey's Old

Government House Hotel have bought another hotel in the island. The

Duke of Richmond Hotel has been taken over by the Red Carnation

Group, who operate a number of luxury hotels around the world.

They plan to spend a couple of million pounds renovating the

establishment and incorporating a new restaurant. Looking at a hotel,

although there are some great people here, one has to say it has

been a fair bit of work doing to it. For example, none of the bedrooms

have air conditioning in them and that is a requirement now for a

good for might star hotel. It needs love and care, which we will

certainly put into it. Now, sorry if you're having your

dinner - but how do you get rid of your rubbish? There's a new scheme

being launched to find out what ends up in your dustbin and if

you're throwing them out responsibly. People in Jersey have

been trawling through your bin bags and so far have found lawnmowers,

ironing boards and microwaves. Beckie Williams spent the day down

at the rubbish dump to find out more.

Ever wondered where your rubbish ends up? Well, this is the answer!

Here at La Collette it's processed and later burnt in the incinerator.

But now, for the first time, the government is finding out exactly

what you're throwing away by looking through old bin bags. So

are they curious or are they turning into big brother? There is

a mite said there which is not unique teachers see, that the

dustmen a great, they take everything. Unfortunately, we have

tried to change that mindset, which is a big chop. We don't want people

leaving electricals and green waste out with their rubbish. And here

they've found things like electrical appliances and batteries,

even a wedding dress, all of which should be disposed of separately

from household waste. Now, this is the heart of the operations here,

where the rubbish is sorted and then burnt. But for the incinerator

to run efficiently, islanders are being asked to only put certain

types of waste in their bin bags. That means no glass, no metals and

no old electricals. I didn't know that you can put old and broken

electricals into the bin bag but I do know. If I have old electrical

things then I put it in the bin. can't put class in. Everything has

to be burnt. So, whilst bags here continue to be processed, the

message is to separate your waste to make life easier for those who

The weather is certainly looking and feeling more tumble for the

week ahead. Some wetter weather around. We will see some act breaks

of wet weather tonight. The next weather front will move in from the

West. That will bring rain later on in the day. Also some much cooler

air for the rest of the week. Generally quite unsettled and some

fairly strong winds to come as well. Tonight's generally cloudy with

some outbreaks of rain. The wind coming up from the south-west but

still fairly mild. First thing tomorrow morning, any rain around

should clear away fairly quickly. Then we should see some brighter
