Hello, welcome to BBC Channel Islands. Here in the Channel | :00:05. | :00:08.
Islands: Cleared for take-off - controversial plans for Guernsey's | :00:08. | :00:12.
runway are given the green light. The final push - with hours to go | :00:12. | :00:18.
until polls open, candidates attempt to impress. And happy | :00:18. | :00:21.
birthday, Bergerac - we look back at 30 years of the drama that put | :00:21. | :00:31.
:00:31. | :00:37. | ||
Good evening. It's been controversial from the very | :00:37. | :00:40.
beginning but now plans to upgrade the runway at Guernsey airport have | :00:41. | :00:44.
been given the go-ahead. The proposals were approved today, | :00:44. | :00:49.
meaning work can start next year. Penny Elderfield reports. | :00:49. | :00:52.
Planes have been taking off here for decades, but the authorities | :00:52. | :00:57.
say if that's to continue, major work is needed on the runway. And | :00:57. | :01:01.
it doesn't come cheap. These plans have just been approved, and at a | :01:01. | :01:04.
cost of 80 million it's the biggest project ever to be | :01:04. | :01:09.
undertaken by the States. delighted, albeit there are | :01:09. | :01:13.
conditions attached to the application. That is what we have | :01:13. | :01:21.
to do now, work with the contractors and the conditions. | :01:21. | :01:25.
Work with the environment to process conditions and it is what | :01:25. | :01:29.
we will be doing from tomorrow, it will take time, but we will get | :01:29. | :01:32.
through it. The decision followed months of consultation, where | :01:32. | :01:35.
critics had the chance to voice concerns. But concerns the | :01:35. | :01:37.
proposals go against the Island's planning laws remain, meaning this | :01:37. | :01:45.
isn't the end of the story. only next stage would be to call | :01:45. | :01:52.
for a judicial review on whether not that the board of the | :01:52. | :01:55.
Environment Department was entitled to approve the scheme. In other | :01:55. | :01:59.
words, or whether the applied with the legislation. | :01:59. | :02:03.
Work at the airport could now start as soon as next year, but as the | :02:03. | :02:06.
threat of a legal challenge remains, we still don't know for sure | :02:06. | :02:12.
whether it will. Armed Guernsey police officers are | :02:12. | :02:15.
attending an incident at a housing estate in Castel. Police were | :02:15. | :02:20.
called to the scene at Les Genats this afternoon. Access to the | :02:20. | :02:24.
estate is currently blocked. We'll bring you more details in the news | :02:24. | :02:28.
at 10:25pm. Channel Television is being sold to | :02:28. | :02:32.
ITV plc for an undisclosed sum. The station was one of a handful still | :02:32. | :02:36.
outside the ITV network. It's been owned by the Yattendon Group since | :02:36. | :02:40.
2001 and next year will celebrate 50 years of broadcasting. But | :02:40. | :02:49.
management say the change won't affect output. You will not see any | :02:49. | :02:54.
difference at all, it is business as usual. We're proud that we run a | :02:54. | :02:58.
strong regional service here and ITV have indicated they support | :02:58. | :03:02.
that regional service and do not see any significant changes taking | :03:02. | :03:09.
place. We see it as a positive move. Her Now, there's just hours to go | :03:09. | :03:12.
until Jersey goes to the polls for its elections. With the countdown | :03:12. | :03:15.
well and truly on, the last Senatorial hustings was held last | :03:15. | :03:18.
night in St Helier and hundreds turned out to grill the 13 | :03:18. | :03:20.
candidates going for the four available seats. Amy Harris was | :03:20. | :03:30.
:03:30. | :03:33. | ||
A sea of faces and standing room only. They even listened from | :03:33. | :03:40.
outside the door as question time came to town. It was the last stop | :03:40. | :03:42.
on the Senatorial campaign trail and the last opportunity for voters | :03:42. | :03:52.
:03:52. | :03:53. | ||
to hear from the 13 candidates going for four seats. I'm keen to | :03:53. | :03:58.
hear about immigration. Immigration. We must stop wasting money, it's | :03:59. | :04:06.
got to be done. We don't want extra taxation. Issues covered ranged | :04:06. | :04:15.
from housing to car parking to education. What do you think about | :04:15. | :04:25.
three schools? I think they will not be very appropriate for infants. | :04:25. | :04:30.
I do not know enough about the three school concept to give you an | :04:30. | :04:39.
educated dancer but I have to be persuaded. Schooling has already | :04:39. | :04:43.
complicated enough and free schools have caused a lot of discord and | :04:43. | :04:51.
our communities. So did parishioners like what they heard? | :04:51. | :04:55.
There's a broad cross-section of opinion. There are some who are | :04:55. | :04:59.
clearly not going to go very far and it will be a dreadful choice | :04:59. | :05:06.
with four rather than six. Tonight has changed my view on some of the | :05:06. | :05:11.
candidates. I found it extremely interesting and it will be hard to | :05:11. | :05:14.
choose between candidates. But what do the candidates hope they got | :05:14. | :05:21.
across? I hope people will remember I have already got things done that | :05:21. | :05:26.
people have been asking for for many years. I bring commonsense and | :05:26. | :05:30.
balanced judgment to all the decisions I make. I try to take as | :05:30. | :05:36.
many people with meet in taking good can -- decisions on behalf of | :05:36. | :05:40.
the community. I think there should be a referendum on the change of | :05:40. | :05:46.
the constitution. I think the Constables should look after parish | :05:46. | :05:50.
matters and there should be detailed legislation if they do not | :05:50. | :05:55.
agree with that. I am in favour of constitutional reform. The current | :05:55. | :06:00.
system is just not working. We have to change from the three different | :06:00. | :06:06.
members, and go for just one type of member and everyone after that | :06:06. | :06:12.
should fall into place in a better system. Of all the candidates, I'm | :06:12. | :06:16.
the one with a platform to build a fairer and greener future for us | :06:16. | :06:21.
and our children. They should take away that I am intelligent, capable | :06:21. | :06:25.
and represent them better than they have been before. So that's it, the | :06:25. | :06:28.
big clear up after the last Senatorial Hustings here in St | :06:28. | :06:32.
Helier. All the 13 candidates can do now is hope that they've done | :06:32. | :06:39.
enough so that people will vote for them on election day. | :06:39. | :06:41.
And here they all are, the 13 candidates wanting your vote | :06:41. | :06:46.
tomorrow for the role of senator. There's more on the election and | :06:46. | :06:49.
all of the candidates for Senator, Deputy and Constable on the BBC | :06:49. | :06:58.
Jersey website. The star of the hit TV drama | :06:58. | :07:01.
Bergerac says the Channel Islands should invest in becoming a | :07:01. | :07:05.
location to shoot films. John Nettles was in the islands recently | :07:05. | :07:10.
to celebrate three decades of the BBC drama, set in Jersey. Meanwhile, | :07:10. | :07:14.
those that starred on the show have been sharing their memories of what | :07:14. | :07:24.
:07:24. | :07:34. | ||
This is an iconic landmark from the opening titles of the programme, | :07:34. | :07:37.
but it almost started as something entirely different. The creator | :07:37. | :07:40.
Robert Banks Stewart had wanted to film a comedy set in the Channel | :07:40. | :07:43.
Islands, before the days of 'Allo 'Allo but TV bosses weren't having | :07:43. | :07:52.
it. He said we cannot do it because it is insulting to people. The | :07:52. | :07:56.
Channel Islands had been occupied. And with a love of Jersey at the | :07:56. | :08:03.
back of his mind - Bergerac was born. What a great place to make a | :08:03. | :08:12.
series. I had done a shoestring and got the BBC last, prizing me away | :08:12. | :08:17.
from the back streets of London. I thought, if I do it well and it's a | :08:17. | :08:22.
good drama, that's how it came to be Jersey. With the first episodes | :08:22. | :08:27.
filmed, the wait for screening and what the public thought was tense. | :08:27. | :08:32.
When it hit the screen on Sunday night, it got around 15 or 16 | :08:32. | :08:39.
million viewers. I went out and got very drunk. That was when it became | :08:39. | :08:43.
a pleasure to do. And as members of the cast and crew got together to | :08:43. | :08:46.
celebrate three decades of the hit BBC show, it's clear it's left | :08:46. | :08:55.
lasting memories. I think what is fantastic about the programme is it | :08:55. | :08:59.
keeps its viewers say. You know you're going to get beautiful | :08:59. | :09:06.
scenery, the plot resolved and you know right will win over wrong. | :09:06. | :09:10.
Very rarely in one's area have I read something and thought, wow, | :09:11. | :09:16.
what a script. My character had all these disguises and some even | :09:16. | :09:20.
people on the crew did not recognise me. It was such fun to | :09:20. | :09:28.
come here every year. I think what they ought to do now is the should | :09:28. | :09:36.
retire to Jersey. Bergerac himself thinks the Channel Islands has what | :09:36. | :09:41.
it takes to shine on the screen. The islands should get themselves | :09:41. | :09:47.
together to a Ford affirm -- Film Company's tax breaks or some kind | :09:47. | :09:50.
of financial arrangement whereby they could save money to bring | :09:50. | :09:54.
productions here. They would bring productions here and along with | :09:54. | :10:02.
that a lot of money. Millions of pounds. But could the show come | :10:02. | :10:11.
back? As an old man? I could come back as a cold case detective. | :10:11. | :10:17.
tried to bring back a series where it would be revealed that Bergerac | :10:17. | :10:27.
had a daughter. We somehow could not persuade at either ITV or BBC. | :10:27. | :10:30.
Three decades on, it's apparent Bergerac still holds a place in the | :10:30. | :10:34.
hearts of those who starred on it and those who live in the islands - | :10:34. | :10:42.
but let's leave Jim to have the last word. | :10:42. | :10:45.
That was a joy to put together and thanks to all the cast and crew who | :10:45. | :10:53.
took the time to talk to me. Now, took the time to talk to me. Now, | :10:53. | :10:58.
it's getting a bit colder. David has the forecast. The coal there | :10:58. | :11:00.
has arrived across the Channel Islands and they will be more of | :11:00. | :11:06.
that across the next two days. Quite a blustery evening tonight | :11:06. | :11:10.
with showers probably continuing. For much of tomorrow, the risk of | :11:10. | :11:14.
showers with some sunshine between those showers. On Thursday and | :11:14. | :11:20.
Friday, high pressure moves in settling things down. There is a | :11:20. | :11:24.
change in one direction and they will see temperatures rise again, | :11:24. | :11:30.
perhaps as much as 15 Celsius. Over night tonight, up into single | :11:30. | :11:36.
figures with some clear sky and temperatures as low as nine Celsius. | :11:36. | :11:39.
Still that north-west breeze which will continue to give a showers and | :11:39. | :11:44.
to the morning. Into the afternoon, showers will become more isolated | :11:45. | :11:51.
with the chance of some sunshine in the afternoon. Feeling colder than | :11:51. | :11:58.
that because of the brisk north- west wind. Here is our coastal | :11:58. | :12:04.
waters forecast. Visibility is good falling to moderate in those | :12:04. | :12:14.
:12:14. | :12:17. | ||
showers. For a sufferers, both beaches will be choppy with the | :12:18. | :12:26.
biggest waves likely to be around at three or four feet. Looks quite | :12:26. | :12:31.
good for the weekend with temperatures looking a little bit | :12:31. | :12:37.
higher and later winds on Thursday. By Friday, winds becomes south- | :12:37. | :12:42.
westerly. Sunny spells and temperatures up to 15 Celsius. On | :12:42. | :12:49.
Saturday, 16 Celsius is possible with warm air from the south. Here | :12:49. | :12:55.
with warm air from the south. Here is the summary. With just hours | :12:55. | :13:00.
until polls open in Jersey, make sure you join us here on the | :13:00. | :13:04. |
