census shows a rising population and double the number of unemployed.

Across the water, Guernsey boots for proposals to control its

population including changes to housing. And the grieving father

If you live in Jersey you will remember filling in a census form

in March. The results have been published. The island's population

has increased by 10,000 in the past decade. But can you guess how many

car and 11 the island? Would it surprise you if I told you

it was edging towards 100,000? 97,000?

That is not bad. Do you think too many people are moving here?

No, that is not bad. 90,000. Would it surprise you if I

said it is 100,000? Or yes!

The man in charge says he does not yet know what he will do about it.

It is too early to draw conclusions. There are many reasons for people

to join our community. Retirement, moving back because of what is

happening in the economy elsewhere in the world, until we know the

exact details and characteristics underlying these numbers we should

not be drawing conclusions. Let's take a closer look. There are

comely 97,857 people living here. - - currently. That is a 10% rise in

10 years. The reasons are simple, more berths than deaths and the

rise in immigration. Only 1,300 of the 2569 out of work are registered

as unemployed. In the next few weeks more detailed information

will be released about the population. Politicians say that

then that they can make better plans for the future.

Guernsey's open market is open for business. That is the message from

the Chief Minister. There were suggestions it could be scrapped as

part of the population review. It sent shivers down the spines of

estate agents. But a new report could bring relief. There will be

changes, but only to return the open market to its original

intentions. How does Gells a balance the needs of European human

rights, demands of employers car, and an ageing population? Well,

there are no easy answers. It is being described by some as the

greatest challenge facing the island. It is being worked on by

the population Policy Group. It has laid out a framework with a general

proposal to take to the States to help steer them in the right

to raise money for charity over Christmas. It is already proving

popular. We sent our reporter to film these pictures. All the money

raised is going to Jersey Hospice. People are very intrigued. Things

are flying out the door. It takes �6,000 per day to run the hospice
