Hello and welcome. A safe place to live or a crime | :00:11. | :00:17.
ridden island? The Guernsey public have their say on community safety. | :00:17. | :00:20.
Plus as many of us get into debt to pay for Christmas, lessons for the | :00:20. | :00:25.
young to avoid the financial pitfalls. | :00:25. | :00:28.
And how the memory of a friend is spurring these people on to walk 44 | :00:28. | :00:38.
| :00:38. | :00:48. | ||
People in Guernsey want to see more police on the streets. That is | :00:48. | :00:54.
according to findings from Community Safety Survey. Drugs, | :00:54. | :00:58.
being attacked and burglary were other issues that people felt were | :00:59. | :01:01.
problems for the island. But some people feel that perception and | :01:01. | :01:04.
reality do not always go hand in hand. | :01:04. | :01:10.
Drugs, the root of all evil? Most people in Guernsey thinks so. The | :01:10. | :01:12.
latest findings from the Community Safety Survey reveal that people | :01:12. | :01:17.
are using, dealing or importing drugs, are considered to be the | :01:17. | :01:22.
biggest problem on the island. But people's perceptions are not | :01:22. | :01:26.
necessarily indicative of the true crime rate. The fact that drugs are | :01:26. | :01:30.
also commonly considered to be among the community could be a | :01:30. | :01:34.
concern to the authorities. There is a drug problem on the island and | :01:34. | :01:40.
we have to address it. But I do not think it is as bad as other crimes. | :01:40. | :01:44.
The crime I have concerned about is the crime of domestic abuse in | :01:44. | :01:50.
Guernsey. That can really harm families, individuals. When you | :01:50. | :01:56.
look back over the last 10 years, though very serious crimes have | :01:56. | :02:00.
happened in domestic situations. When it comes to the problems that | :02:00. | :02:10.
| :02:10. | :02:17. | ||
the public feels our most To tackle these kind of problems | :02:17. | :02:20.
the majority of respondents said they wanted to see more police on | :02:20. | :02:25.
the beat. Policing is not just about visibility, there are many | :02:25. | :02:28.
occasions where we do not want to be visible in the way that we | :02:29. | :02:34.
tackle criminality. That is an important message. Many elements of | :02:34. | :02:38.
policing are invisible but they are equally important. We should not | :02:38. | :02:42.
just get focused on a simplistic view that if you throw money at | :02:42. | :02:46.
policing and have lots of neighbour were policing officers, everything | :02:46. | :02:51.
will be all right. It is not. some issues were highlighted as a | :02:51. | :02:55.
cause for concern, the majority of people said that when it came to | :02:55. | :02:58.
community safety, they were not very worried at all were not | :02:58. | :03:03.
worried at all about anything. is a fantastic place to live. What | :03:03. | :03:08.
we need to do is small isolated incidents, we should not allow them | :03:08. | :03:13.
to be blown out of proportion. Perception and reality can | :03:13. | :03:16.
sometimes be two very different things. At a time when some of the | :03:16. | :03:20.
public feels threatened and the a authorities maintain that Guernsey | :03:20. | :03:28.
is one of the safest places to live, there is no time to be complacent. | :03:28. | :03:31.
Jersey's former chief minister believes that the number of states | :03:31. | :03:35.
members could be reduced significantly. Terry Le Sueur has | :03:35. | :03:39.
called for a smaller government with fewer Constable's or diabetes, | :03:39. | :03:47.
but more politicians elected on an island wide mandate. | :03:47. | :03:51.
In a state you need both people with an island wide mandate and | :03:51. | :03:56.
people with a parish mandate. I think the emphasis increasingly is | :03:56. | :04:02.
on the island wide mandate, so my suggestion was to increase the | :04:02. | :04:05.
number of senators, rather than decrease them. | :04:06. | :04:11.
After four years, covered in scaffolding, work to repair the St | :04:11. | :04:16.
James's Church in St Helier will start early next year. Varied that | :04:16. | :04:20.
-- there is proposals have been decline since 2007. Work is | :04:20. | :04:24.
expected to be completed by next summer. There are plans to sell the | :04:24. | :04:28.
La Motte Centre to pay for the building work and move the youth | :04:28. | :04:32.
club to St James's. An increase in the number of people | :04:32. | :04:37.
in Guernsey needing help with debt is expected in the new year. The | :04:37. | :04:40.
Citizen's Advice Bureaux says it is likely to get more inquiries after | :04:40. | :04:45.
Christmas due to the current economic crisis. Various | :04:45. | :04:48.
initiatives are under way to try to prevent people from getting into | :04:48. | :04:54.
debt in the first place. This may look like a typical | :04:54. | :04:58.
classroom scene, but Catherine is not a teacher. In fact, she is a | :04:58. | :05:06.
debt adviser. And for the past few months she has been going to | :05:06. | :05:09.
schools in Guernsey to talk finances. The idea is that young | :05:09. | :05:14.
people should learn about budgeting early on and therefore avoid | :05:14. | :05:18.
getting into trouble later. It is an important live scale and at the | :05:18. | :05:22.
earlier that and people think about managing money, the better. When | :05:22. | :05:26.
they go out into employment and university, they will have to | :05:26. | :05:36.
| :05:36. | :05:37. | ||
manage their own money. The lessons may have proved a success with the | :05:37. | :05:41.
school, there are more planned in future, but what do the pupils | :05:41. | :05:50.
think? It is very useful. You do not understand how much work goes | :05:50. | :05:56.
into you Piet -- your parents paying for a holiday. I will not | :05:56. | :06:01.
buy things over the top that I do not need. It is very important | :06:01. | :06:04.
because if you learn very young, you will remember when you are | :06:04. | :06:10.
older. If you start saving now, you'll have money for later and the | :06:10. | :06:13.
things you want to buy. We all have lessons to learn in life, but | :06:13. | :06:17.
staying out of debt is hope for the one that these teenagers will have | :06:17. | :06:23.
mastered. You are watching the BBC and the | :06:23. | :06:28.
Channel Islands. Later in Spotlight, how one a lady is still celebrating | :06:28. | :06:38.
| :06:38. | :06:42. | ||
Christmas with her 1960s fairy Now, do you fancy walking 44 miles | :06:42. | :06:46.
this weekend? A group of determined people will be doing exactly that | :06:46. | :06:51.
to raise money and awareness of skin cancer. For the 10th year, a | :06:51. | :06:55.
group of walkers will pound the island's path and roads in memory | :06:55. | :07:05.
| :07:05. | :07:05. | ||
Walking the for hope, and battling for wintry weather. But for these | :07:05. | :07:08.
islanders that is not stopping them. They have a very special reason for | :07:09. | :07:15.
doing this. It is something that is very close to all of their hearts. | :07:15. | :07:20.
Peter contracted melanoma and he died of skin cancer. He died within | :07:20. | :07:25.
about six months of contracting it. He was just a very good man. He was | :07:25. | :07:29.
great with kids and he loved my children. We are doing in his | :07:29. | :07:33.
memory. He liked walking and he would have liked to have done | :07:33. | :07:38.
something like this. We would talk about this kind of thing over a | :07:38. | :07:41.
couple of beers on Friday nights and I felt that we should do in his | :07:41. | :07:47.
memory. The crispers walk is now in its 10th year and has increased in | :07:47. | :07:51.
popularity since its humble beginnings. -- the Christmas walk. | :07:51. | :07:56.
The it has come a long way in terms of participation. We had nine the | :07:56. | :08:00.
first year and it has built up and after about four or five years we | :08:00. | :08:05.
had over 100 people doing it. This year we have around 185 people | :08:05. | :08:12.
taking part in total. 125,000 has been raised so far in the past | :08:12. | :08:17.
decade. We try and get as much as we can from the people | :08:17. | :08:23.
participating in the walk. They need the money to help them keep | :08:23. | :08:29.
going. We are pleased to play our little part in achieving that. | :08:29. | :08:35.
Walkers set off a for the 44 mile challenge from here at Ouaisne on | :08:35. | :08:40.
Saturday morning. For these four walkers it is a way of keeping a | :08:40. | :08:47.
friend's memory alive. Let's hope the weather stays good | :08:47. | :08:50.
for them. Guernsey's Christmas ice-skating | :08:50. | :08:56.
rink is now open to the public. It has been under construction in St | :08:56. | :09:04.
Peter Port's Market Square. The ice rink in parade his guard -- Parade | :09:04. | :09:09.
Gardens in St Helier opened as well this evening. Instructors will be | :09:09. | :09:15.
there to help people unsteady on their feet. I will teach you to | :09:15. | :09:21.
stand up and to skate round safely. If you escape before, I can teach | :09:21. | :09:28.
you to go backwards and turn around. -- if you skated before. | :09:28. | :09:33.
Are you still stuck for present ideas this Christmas, do you know a | :09:33. | :09:37.
sports fan who would love tickets for sports events? Or perhaps | :09:37. | :09:41.
someone who would like an iPad 2? Those are just a few of the things | :09:41. | :09:46.
that you can go for in the Christmas charity auction on BBC | :09:46. | :09:54.
Radio Jersey this Sunday. One of the organisers joined the earlier. | :09:54. | :09:59.

on the BBC does the website. -- BBC Hello. Some clear sky tonight | :12:04. | :12:08.
across the Channel Islands means of a potential for a bit of frost here | :12:08. | :12:13.
and there. Not an especially hard frost, but for the two larger | :12:13. | :12:17.
island of Guernsey and Jersey, temperatures will be close to | :12:17. | :12:23.
freezing. Behind this weather system or we will find a light | :12:23. | :12:28.
winds and cold air. Much of the day tomorrow will be fine and dry. But | :12:28. | :12:33.
then the change comes as weather fronts sweeping for Sunday. | :12:33. | :12:37.
Saturday it will be the better day. Looking at the detail for this | :12:37. | :12:41.
evening and overnight, some patchy cloud, but mostly that will fade | :12:41. | :12:46.
away. Overnight temperatures will be down close to freezing. Winds | :12:46. | :12:51.
light and from the north. Tomorrow morning, find in places, frosty | :12:51. | :12:55.

Temperatures will be eight or nine degrees. Fairly light winds | :13:00. | :13:10.

of high water. For our surface, I think that the surf will clean up | :13:20. | :13:29.
quite nicely for the weekend. There will be reasonable waves as well. | :13:29. | :13:33.
The outlook for Sunday is a lot more cloudy. It may be briefly | :13:33. | :13:37.
chilly on Saturday night. Cloud will roll in to lift the | :13:37. | :13:42. |
