Hello. Good evening. Welcome to the programme. Tonight's top stories: | :00:07. | :00:16.
Government funding for sport is reinstated, but reduced. | :00:16. | :00:18.
Plus: The charity celebrating 125 years | :00:18. | :00:21.
of helping islanders with sight problems. | :00:21. | :00:25.
Later in the programme, find out how I try and steal the Guinness | :00:25. | :00:35.
:00:35. | :00:40. | ||
World Record from this man. There's been a U-turn on government | :00:40. | :00:44.
funding for sports clubs in Jersey. Last week's announcement that | :00:44. | :00:47.
states money would be cut by 80% caused outcry among the clubs, who | :00:47. | :00:52.
claimed they'd be unable to compete abroad. So today, Jersey's | :00:52. | :00:54.
education department agreed to give the sports council a one-off | :00:54. | :01:01.
payment of 120,000 to cover 2012. But there's no guarantee of any | :01:01. | :01:09.
future funding. Beckie Williams reports. | :01:09. | :01:13.
These are some of the people that would have been affected by the cut. | :01:13. | :01:16.
But today they were told they will still be subsidised to play matches | :01:16. | :01:26.
:01:26. | :01:27. | ||
off the island. It does help relieve the burden on the parents. | :01:27. | :01:32.
It is very important. Due think it is time we started thinking about | :01:32. | :01:37.
where we play a our matches? It is very important that children from | :01:37. | :01:40.
Jersey get off the island to play and experience different conditions. | :01:40. | :01:44.
You learn a lot more about people when you take them away. | :01:44. | :01:48.
Last year, the Sports Council were given 176,000. That was due to be | :01:48. | :01:51.
cut to 38,000. But now that's been changed to a one-off payment of | :01:51. | :01:58.
just 122,000. The Sports Council will decide how best to divide the | :01:58. | :02:08.
:02:08. | :02:09. | ||
money between each club. It will go towards helping people to travel. | :02:09. | :02:17.
We would have liked more, but we understand the situation to which | :02:17. | :02:23.
the departments are in. We could not maintain the 176,000 that we | :02:23. | :02:27.
had. We will do the best we can with what we have got. I am sure | :02:27. | :02:34.
most people will be very great views. -- great fault. | :02:34. | :02:42.
But the one-off payment means cuts will inevitably be made elsewhere. | :02:42. | :02:46.
I will have to be very careful with what I do. I am committed to | :02:46. | :02:50.
finding this money. I will do it. So today's announcement is good | :02:50. | :02:53.
news in the short term for Jersey sportsmen and women, but the | :02:53. | :02:56.
minister will be looking elsewhere in his departments to make cuts. | :02:56. | :02:59.
A woman who's been missing for nearly two months in Jersey has | :02:59. | :03:02.
been found. The police found Margarida Nascimento de Ascensao in | :03:02. | :03:06.
an abandoned property near her St Saviour's Road home. She's being | :03:06. | :03:09.
treated in hospital, where her condition is not thought to be life | :03:09. | :03:13.
threatening. Police have been concerned for her welfare. | :03:13. | :03:16.
Talks to secure future bus services in Guernsey are still on track, | :03:16. | :03:18.
according to the Environment Department. The current contract | :03:18. | :03:22.
with Island Coachways runs out at the end of next month. London-based | :03:22. | :03:28.
company HCT look set to take over. Environment says it has taken | :03:28. | :03:31.
longer than expected, but it's certain a final agreement will be | :03:31. | :03:38.
reached soon. 300,000 is being spent restoring | :03:38. | :03:42.
an 18th Century farm in Jersey. Les Cotils farm in St Helier was | :03:42. | :03:45.
bequeathed to the National Trust for Jersey, and is one of 20 | :03:45. | :03:48.
properties it looks after. The Trust says the farm is an important | :03:48. | :03:55.
part of the island's heritage which should be preserved. | :03:55. | :04:00.
It is important. It is a typical example of a Jersey farmhouse. It | :04:00. | :04:05.
is not very grand, but it is middle of the road and it is in this | :04:05. | :04:10.
beautiful setting. We are very fortunate that we own a lot of the | :04:10. | :04:14.
land around the farm so we can not only protect the buildings, we can | :04:14. | :04:17.
protect the setting of the farm and its history. | :04:17. | :04:19.
Jersey's Blind Society will be celebrating its 125th birthday | :04:19. | :04:21.
tomorrow. It's Jersey's oldest charity. Throughout that time, | :04:21. | :04:24.
they've been helping islanders of all ages cope with visual | :04:24. | :04:27.
impairments. Many older people rely on their services, but young people | :04:27. | :04:31.
are affected, too. When Emilie Ormsbey's vision started failing | :04:31. | :04:35.
badly six months ago, the society was there to help her carry on with | :04:35. | :04:43.
normal life. Rachel Royce reports. Emilie Ormsbey needs more help than | :04:43. | :04:48.
most when it comes to choosing the dress for her wedding day. Since | :04:48. | :04:52.
the age of 10, she's suffered from poor vision. Then suddenly, six | :04:53. | :04:56.
months ago, her sight got much worse. All she sees now is blurry | :04:56. | :05:01.
shapes. She must rely on others to tell her what looks good. At first, | :05:01. | :05:04.
she became very depressed by the loss of her sight, but then decided | :05:04. | :05:12.
to do something positive. When I left school at 18 and found there | :05:12. | :05:18.
was not anything around for support for people that I was aware rather | :05:18. | :05:23.
with a vision impairment. Last year, I was very depressed and very upset | :05:23. | :05:31.
about being vision impaired. I decided to do something about it. I | :05:31. | :05:35.
contacted the Blind Society and after speaking to them, I said that | :05:35. | :05:40.
I would quite like to set up a support group for people call art | :05:40. | :05:46.
my age, younger, older, who are not elderly with a vision impairment. | :05:46. | :05:49.
Sarah Shaw is a community worker with the society. She helps the | :05:49. | :05:52.
visually impaired with whatever they might need. From getting the | :05:52. | :05:55.
right benefits to finding a talking watch. She helped Emily get her | :05:55. | :05:59.
self-help group off the ground. They will get emotional support by | :05:59. | :06:04.
being able to talk to each other, social opportunities are a rising, | :06:04. | :06:10.
and also, as we have said, pressure group. They can decide how things | :06:10. | :06:15.
can be done it better in the community to support those people | :06:15. | :06:20.
with visual impairment. You look gorgeous. | :06:20. | :06:23.
The group was set up just before Christmas and is already | :06:23. | :06:26.
campaigning for a blind register in Jersey to make it easier for the | :06:26. | :06:29.
visually impaired to access services. For Emily, the group has | :06:29. | :06:33.
been a real tonic. But her wedding is now what she is focusing on. The | :06:33. | :06:36.
day when her husband can let her know how fabulous she looks in her | :06:36. | :06:43.
dress. You're watching the BBC in the | :06:43. | :06:49.
Channel Islands. Later in Spotlight with Justin and Victoria: | :06:49. | :06:53.
The team get in training with a month to go until the Sport Relief | :06:53. | :07:00.
Alderney Library plans to create its own version of the missing | :07:00. | :07:03.
final segment of the Bayeux Tapestry. The famous tapestry tells | :07:03. | :07:06.
the story of the conquest of Britain by William the Conqueror | :07:06. | :07:11.
and is about 20-inches high and 230-foot long. The final segment, | :07:11. | :07:15.
believed to be around 10-foot long, is thought to have frayed away. | :07:15. | :07:19.
Library staff want volunteers to help recreate it. They plan to | :07:20. | :07:28.
include the coronation of William. What we are doing is creating the | :07:28. | :07:33.
missing end to the Bayeux Tapestry. That end has never existed in | :07:33. | :07:37.
recorded history. We are trying to create something that it might have | :07:37. | :07:42.
been. We are throwing in a couple of a subtle references to the | :07:42. | :07:46.
Channel Islands. This was the beginning of the Channel Islands | :07:46. | :07:49.
connection to Britain. And if you're in Alderney and at a | :07:50. | :07:53.
loose end, so to speak, you're invited to pop into the library to | :07:53. | :07:55.
take part. Now, you may have heard of the | :07:55. | :07:57.
expression, a dicky ticker, referring to a weak heart. Well, | :07:58. | :08:01.
here's a story of a man from Guernsey with a very slow ticker. | :08:01. | :08:04.
But don't worry, he's in fine health and has a Guinness World | :08:04. | :08:09.
Record to prove it. Mike Wilkins went to meet him. | :08:09. | :08:13.
Like many of us, Martin Brady has a job which is challenging and at | :08:13. | :08:18.
times, stressful. But Martin's body has a knack of coping well. At just | :08:18. | :08:21.
27 beats per minute, Martin has the slowest resting heartbeat in the | :08:21. | :08:28.
world. He's held the accolade for six years, so I decided to see if | :08:28. | :08:32.
he's still got a slow ticker and took him back to the place where he | :08:32. | :08:41.
set the record, the Guernsey Chest and Heart Unit. Stay nice and | :08:41. | :08:44.
relaxed and still. And after just 10 seconds, we | :08:44. | :08:48.
discovered that his heart rate had increased over the last few years. | :08:48. | :08:52.
With all this excitement, it has gone up to 44. It is still quite | :08:52. | :08:59.
low. It is usually around 60. Some people are a little bit higher if | :08:59. | :09:04.
they are nervous. Not that we are terrifying. We are quite nice. | :09:04. | :09:08.
say it is a sign of good health, as long as you have got everything | :09:08. | :09:12.
checked out. It could be a sign of a problem, but I got checked out | :09:12. | :09:17.
and they said I was fine. I think it is a living on an Kinsley with | :09:17. | :09:21.
nice people, a nice Ireland. It works for me. | :09:22. | :09:25.
I'm always up for a challenge and decided to take on Martin, but had | :09:25. | :09:33.
an unpleasant surprise - high blood pressure. You will get booked in to | :09:33. | :09:39.
get it checked. He will be a little bit more relaxed and lying down. | :09:39. | :09:45.
People do not know. You are saying that my pulse is good, but my blood | :09:45. | :09:49.
pressure is too high. We'll look after Mike, don't worry. | :09:49. | :09:52.
And if anyone wants to know their pulse and blood pressure, then you | :09:52. | :09:55.
can visit the Guernsey Chest and can visit the Guernsey Chest and | :09:55. | :09:56.
Heart Unit for free. Let's get the weather forecast now. | :09:56. | :10:05.
Here's David. Good evening. The coal story continues. Little change | :10:05. | :10:10.
in that pattern for the rest of the week. However, there is a bit more | :10:10. | :10:15.
moisture around later tonight and tomorrow morning. The track of the | :10:15. | :10:20.
air coming along the English Channel and just clipping Jersey | :10:20. | :10:25.
with a few wintry showers over the last 12 hours a show -- the next 12 | :10:25. | :10:30.
hours or so. There is more moisture around overnight. That weather | :10:30. | :10:33.
front will get a little bit closer on Wednesday but that is as far as | :10:33. | :10:43.
:10:43. | :10:43. | ||
it will get. Looking at it in detail, quite a bit of clear sky | :10:43. | :10:48.
initially, but it will cloud over. By the end of the night, a few | :10:48. | :10:54.
flurries of snow possible, most likely across these areas. | :10:54. | :11:00.
Temperatures down to between one and minus one degrees Celsius. The | :11:00. | :11:05.
lowest in central parts of Jersey. Tomorrow, the risk of those showers | :11:05. | :11:10.
retreat westwards and we are into a fine day. Quite a lot of cloud for | :11:10. | :11:16.
most of the day. Quite a cold day. A brisk north-easterly breeze will | :11:16. | :11:23.
make it feel even colder. Looking at the Marine for cars, north | :11:23. | :11:28.
easterly force four or five. A few showers in the north, but mainly | :11:28. | :11:37.
good visibility. These are the times of high water. For most of | :11:37. | :11:43.
our surfing beaches, there is not a lot of surface. But maybe one or a | :11:43. | :11:46.
two feet. The out look for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Thursday, | :11:46. | :11:53.
bright and dry. Rather more cloud on Friday and staying dry on | :11:53. | :11:58. |
