Another rise in unemployment in Jersey but with record levels are | :00:16. | :00:19.
our Governments doing enough to get people back to work? Plus Guernsey | :00:19. | :00:22.
takes the battle against obesity to the supermarkets. And the bobbies | :00:22. | :00:26.
to beat - The UK police who are coming over in force to run the | :00:26. | :00:36.
:00:36. | :00:42. | ||
Jersey marathon. Once again unemployment in Jersey has risen to | :00:42. | :00:46.
a new high. At the end of last month 1,700 people were officially | :00:46. | :00:52.
actively seeking work. And the number of NEW people registering | :00:52. | :00:56.
with the States last month was the highest to date. Almost one in five | :00:56. | :01:00.
people looking for a job have been unemployed for more than a year. | :01:00. | :01:04.
And nearly one in three jobs seekers are under 25. The | :01:04. | :01:07.
Government say it's their number one priority but what are they | :01:07. | :01:11.
really doing about it? And are they achieving anything when the | :01:11. | :01:16.
unemployment statistic keeps rising. Rachel Royce reports. After seven | :01:16. | :01:22.
months of looking for work, Daniel McCormack has landed a job. He's | :01:22. | :01:26.
starting as a hall porter at the Palme Dor in St Helier after taking | :01:26. | :01:29.
part in a states scheme to help young people find work in the | :01:29. | :01:39.
:01:39. | :01:40. | ||
hosptiality industry. There I felt the have not really given the young | :01:40. | :01:44.
ones at chance because they would rather hire people who have got | :01:44. | :01:54.
:01:54. | :02:01. | ||
experience. That is what I was binding. -- binding full -- finding. | :02:01. | :02:04.
He's not the first person to land a job this way - the hotels | :02:05. | :02:07.
receptionist spent a month on a return to work scheme. The | :02:07. | :02:09.
unemployment figures are getting worse but ironically the latest | :02:10. | :02:12.
figures have risen partly as a result of people registering for | :02:12. | :02:21.
the governments schemes. More people are registering because they | :02:21. | :02:26.
see the schemes we are running and want to take the jobs that were | :02:26. | :02:36.
being offered. They are still vacancies in the Jersey that some | :02:36. | :02:41.
employers say they are struggling to fill. Some say it is because of | :02:41. | :02:49.
an island economy not having enough people to fill every job. Others | :02:49. | :02:59.
:02:59. | :03:01. | ||
say it is because people are too fussy. What's the best way to help | :03:01. | :03:03.
unemployed people get back into work? Well in Guernsey the States | :03:03. | :03:07.
are bringing in the experts. Social Security has teamed up with local | :03:07. | :03:09.
recruitment firm, Personnel Appointments and Advantage HR to | :03:09. | :03:12.
offer more support for job seekers. With the number of people out of | :03:12. | :03:15.
work also on the up in recent months, it's hoped it will help | :03:15. | :03:23.
reverse that trend. They will be working with jobseeker's to help | :03:23. | :03:28.
match them to vacancies. They will also be working with employers and | :03:28. | :03:34.
in some cases setting in on interviews to give feedback to the | :03:34. | :03:39.
jobseeker's to improve their chances next time around. Well what | :03:39. | :03:42.
do you think? Are you an employee looking for work and finding it | :03:42. | :03:45.
difficult? Or are you an employer searching for staff and having no | :03:45. | :03:49.
luck? Well we'd like to hear from you - just get in touch with us at | :03:49. | :03:52.
[email protected] or search for us on facebook and twitter - at bbc ci | :03:52. | :03:55.
news - and leave your comments. Meanwhile money left unspent by | :03:55. | :03:58.
government departments in Jersey will be used to help islanders find | :03:58. | :04:05.
work. 40 Million was left at the end of last year. The cash will | :04:05. | :04:07.
also be spent on bowel cancer screening and improvements to | :04:07. | :04:10.
states housing - like here at Le Marais and Le Squez. Are | :04:10. | :04:13.
supermarkets doing enough to help tackle the growing problem of | :04:13. | :04:17.
obesity? Well Guernsey's Director of Public Health says it's not been | :04:17. | :04:21.
plain sailing getting all the big stores on board. And he's calling | :04:22. | :04:27.
on the private sector to do more. Penny Elderfield reports. Whether | :04:27. | :04:30.
it be because of too many fatty foods or because we're less active. | :04:30. | :04:34.
The stats show we're getting heavier. With 20% of people in | :04:34. | :04:43.
Guernsey now thought to be obese. The problem is the States budget | :04:43. | :04:45.
for tackling the problem isn't growing. So is more outside help | :04:46. | :04:55.
the answer? There is plenty that the private sector can do, | :04:55. | :04:59.
retailers and supermarkets should work with the State sector to try | :04:59. | :05:04.
to encourage people to eat healthily. One strategy we had was | :05:04. | :05:09.
successful with some retailers but other retailers such as large | :05:09. | :05:13.
supermarkets were not interested at all in working with us which was | :05:13. | :05:18.
disappointing. So what more could stores do to help make customers | :05:18. | :05:26.
make the right choices? The Co-op says "It's have been working with | :05:26. | :05:29.
the States and specifically the Health Promotion unit in Guernsey | :05:29. | :05:32.
for a few years now. It is an excellent ongoing relationship that | :05:32. | :05:35.
we would like to develop further in the future." Marks and Spencers | :05:35. | :05:38.
says it also works with the States to put on various sporting events, | :05:38. | :05:41.
but says it would be keen to explore more options too. And | :05:41. | :05:45.
Waitrose says: it's committed to helping our customers lead a | :05:45. | :05:48.
And worked closely with the Health Promotion Unit during 'Weight Wise | :05:48. | :05:51.
Week'. Ssupplying stock to help spread the message of a good | :05:51. | :05:54.
balanced diet. So it seems the stores are willing. So perhaps | :05:54. | :05:57.
there is scope for more help in future to get that message out | :05:57. | :05:59.
there. Because if the Island doesn't... Obesity is a problem | :05:59. | :06:07.
that could cost a lot more to fix further down the line. A Jersey | :06:07. | :06:09.
politician has changed his proposal to scrap free health prescriptions, | :06:09. | :06:14.
after objections from islanders. Deputy Geoff Southern said charging | :06:14. | :06:17.
all islanders for the service could provide more health support for | :06:17. | :06:20.
less well-off people. But he's now re-written it to exclude those aged | :06:20. | :06:30.
:06:30. | :06:31. | ||
65 or more, and those suffering from chronic illnesses. It is due | :06:31. | :06:37.
to be debated by the States in April. It is still worthwhile and | :06:37. | :06:47.
:06:47. | :06:54. | ||
still allows free access to D P's. -- GPs. You're watching the BBC in | :06:54. | :06:57.

The former owner of an animal sanctuary speaks out after she ran | :07:00. | :07:04.
out of money and had to re-home all her animals. Guernsey FC remains at | :07:04. | :07:07.
the top Combined Counties League division 1 after a 2-1 win over | :07:07. | :07:10.
London side South Kilburn. Fog put the match in doubt and the kick off | :07:10. | :07:13.
was pushed back to 7pm. Chris Mauger scored the winning goal 3 | :07:13. | :07:16.
minutes from time. Cricket - and Guernsey offspinner Gary Rich is | :07:16. | :07:25.
stepping down from the island cricket squad. The 47-year-old | :07:25. | :07:28.
announced his retirement just ahead of Guernsey's game against the | :07:28. | :07:32.
Cayman Islands in Singapore yesterday. Guernsey were victorious | :07:32. | :07:35.
by a single run, and took third place as a result. Police Officers | :07:35. | :07:39.
from the UK are coming over for the Jersey Marathon in October. It's | :07:39. | :07:49.
:07:49. | :07:51. | ||
not to police the event but to compete. Every year the force have | :07:51. | :07:55.
an inter force competition within an arranged marathon. And were | :07:55. | :07:58.
persuaded by Jersey's very own chief of police to come here. | :07:58. | :08:05.
Here's Emma Chambers. When he's not in charge of Jersey's police force | :08:05. | :08:08.
Mike Bowron runs. He's so passionate about it he runs to work | :08:08. | :08:12.
every day so it won't surprise you he's not shy of a marathon or two. | :08:12. | :08:15.
Now he's persuaded the UK police force to hold their inter-force | :08:15. | :08:22.
marathon in Jersey. I am chair man of the British police athletics | :08:22. | :08:30.
session. We always hold a force marathon and this year it will be | :08:30. | :08:39.
on Jersey. The police force competitions have been going on now | :08:39. | :08:48.
for over 30 years. They've competed in marathons all over the UK - but | :08:48. | :08:57.
it'll be the first time they've come to the Channel Islands. We are | :08:57. | :09:01.
going to have a real quality of runners we have never had in the | :09:01. | :09:07.
Jersey marathon before. I am hoping we may be able to produce the | :09:07. | :09:12.
winner of both the men's and women's. I am hoping to get some | :09:12. | :09:22.
:09:22. | :09:23. | ||
really good athletes over. So the race is on - well it will be on | :09:23. | :09:25.
Sunday 7th October for all those competing in this year's Jersey | :09:25. | :09:30.
Marathon. Whether it's for fun or for a personal challenge - there's | :09:30. | :09:33.
still plenty of time to enter. There could more travel delays to | :09:33. | :09:37.
and from the Channel Islands over the next couple of days because of | :09:37. | :09:40.
the weather. This was St Aubin in Jersey - taken from St Helier this | :09:40. | :09:46.
evening as the mist set in. But as well as causing many flights to be | :09:46. | :09:51.
cancelled, last week's fog delayed about 160,000 items of mail. And | :09:51. | :09:54.
Cineworld in Jersey had to cancel some screenings of new films which | :09:54. | :09:57.
they were unable to fly into the island. Jersey's Met Office is | :09:57. | :10:00.
warning the fog and low cloud may return, though they don't expect | :10:00. | :10:10.
:10:10. | :10:10. | ||
flights to be as heavily affected as last week. The man in the know | :10:10. | :10:16.
who can tell us what is going on is here. After last week's visibility | :10:16. | :10:22.
problems sadly the mist and fog is back again. Overnight tonight and | :10:22. | :10:28.
early tomorrow morning there will be a lot of cloud with nest around | :10:28. | :10:34.
the coasts and a hill fog. If you are travelling, particularly on | :10:34. | :10:40.
flights between Jersey and Guernsey there is a possibility of | :10:40. | :10:45.
visibility issues tomorrow morning. High pressure dominates the weather | :10:45. | :10:50.
for this week. This weather front will introduce a bit more moisture | :10:50. | :10:56.
into the area overnight. Tomorrow deal low-pressure will remain the | :10:56. | :11:02.
year. On Wednesday we will get south-easterly winds which is dry | :11:02. | :11:10.
air year so the potential of more breaks in the cloud and an easing | :11:10. | :11:15.
of the mist and fog. Tomorrow it will be misty and the day. It may | :11:15. | :11:21.
well brighten up a little bit into the afternoon. The maximum | :11:22. | :11:29.
temperature will be around 11 degrees. The coastal waters | :11:29. | :11:39.
:11:39. | :11:47. | ||
forecast is moderate to poor would Wednesday is brighter and a boat | :11:47. | :11:52.
there will be some morning mist it will left and we should see some | :11:52. | :12:00.
sunny spells. -- it will left. By Thursday the will cloud will return | :12:00. | :12:04.
and the mist might again caused some problems by the end of the | :12:04. | :12:14.
