Good evening. Welcome to BBC Channel Islands. Coming up... | :00:05. | :00:08.
Lost in translation - why politicians are failing to | :00:08. | :00:13.
communicate with the public just weeks before an election. | :00:13. | :00:16.
Also tonight... Spending money to make money - the | :00:16. | :00:21.
businesses investing heavily to draw in tourists this summer. | :00:21. | :00:24.
And, by the book - we visit a little community library with big | :00:24. | :00:34.
:00:34. | :00:41. | ||
How much communication do you want from your politicians? Well, | :00:41. | :00:44.
Guernsey State has been criticised for failing to keep the public | :00:44. | :00:48.
properly informed. A report out today says better communication is | :00:48. | :00:52.
the only way to ensure islanders are engaged with local politics. | :00:52. | :00:55.
And as there is a general election just around the corner, that's more | :00:55. | :01:04.
important than ever. The day when the island gets its | :01:04. | :01:08.
say on who's in charge. A day that is happening next month. And after | :01:08. | :01:11.
putting in the effort to convince the public to vote, figures out | :01:11. | :01:18.
today show 29,500 have done just that. But now it's about getting | :01:18. | :01:26.
them to turn up on polling day. That message must go on and we must | :01:26. | :01:29.
keep awareness of the date, 18th April, and make sure those that | :01:29. | :01:34.
have registered go on to use that and vote. But the real challenge is | :01:34. | :01:38.
and getting people to engage on that one day every four years. It's | :01:38. | :01:41.
about making sure the public want to know what's going on here every | :01:41. | :01:44.
single month. Engaging with the public is something the States are | :01:44. | :01:48.
doing very well, according to a report out today. So, what needs to | :01:48. | :01:57.
change? There could be a presumption to publish. When you're | :01:57. | :02:01.
writing of limitation, you know the public will see it. Meetings are | :02:01. | :02:04.
open to public. We know there will be more publicly wings, and things | :02:05. | :02:08.
like that. What is key is getting people to do more than just float. | :02:08. | :02:13.
It should be continued involvement. And things that it will be up to | :02:13. | :02:16.
the next government to introduce. After, of course, the public have | :02:16. | :02:26.
:02:26. | :02:27. | ||
decided who will be part of it. A 37-year-old man has been told to | :02:27. | :02:29.
leave the Jersey after admitting two charges of breaking and | :02:29. | :02:32.
entering. Elvio Plinio Rodrigues Milho appeared in the Magistrates' | :02:32. | :02:34.
Court charged with two counts of robbery in February. Milho, | :02:34. | :02:37.
originally from Madeira, has been bound over to leave the island for | :02:37. | :02:39.
three years. A surge in hits on the Jersey | :02:39. | :02:43.
Tourism website at the start of this year brought high hopes of a | :02:43. | :02:46.
bumper summer season. It was mainly thanks to new TV adverts, but that | :02:46. | :02:50.
interest has so far failed to translate into bookings. The | :02:50. | :02:53.
island's tourism industry is stepping up its battle for business, | :02:53. | :02:55.
looking to new markets and investing in new style | :02:55. | :03:05.
:03:05. | :03:07. | ||
accommodation. As you can see, we have built these 12 beautiful | :03:07. | :03:12.
cottages. They are for the self catering market. They are top of | :03:12. | :03:18.
the range, luxury five-star accommodation. Going to one of the | :03:18. | :03:22.
four-bed room cottages and make our way to the lounge and to the | :03:22. | :03:26.
outside terrace area... La Place Hotels is just one company | :03:26. | :03:28.
investing heavily in its accommodation, aiming firmly at a | :03:28. | :03:37.
high end of the market. Last year we found we had a huge increase in | :03:37. | :03:44.
the German market in the hotel. There was a demand their that they | :03:44. | :03:49.
wanted self-catering. We are now going to attack the European market, | :03:49. | :03:56.
in particular, to Germany to build into the travel market via | :03:56. | :04:02.

island continues to advertise to its traditional audience, the UK, | :04:07. | :04:10.
but is now also focusing new investment in markets further | :04:10. | :04:16.
afield. Brighten up your day in the warmest place in the British Isles. | :04:16. | :04:20.
We think the potential growth areas will be no order Europe, Germany | :04:20. | :04:27.

looking to Scandinavia as well, with a new charter flight from | :04:32. | :04:37.

to Jersey Tourism. It's understood Guernsey Football | :04:51. | :04:53.
Club will lose their three points awarded for Saturday's win against | :04:53. | :04:56.
Hounslow. Guernsey won 2-0 on Saturday, but according to a | :04:56. | :04:58.
statement from the Guernsey Football Association, Kieron Mahon, | :04:58. | :05:01.
who played the full 90 minutes in Saturday's match at Footes Lane, | :05:01. | :05:04.
was serving a two-match ban following a game he played for | :05:04. | :05:11.
Northerners AC on 10th February. Guernsey FC say they were unaware | :05:11. | :05:14.
of this that the time but have since reported the incident to the | :05:14. | :05:18.
Combined Counties League. Rugby, and Jersey staged a second- | :05:18. | :05:21.
half comeback to beat Blaydon 28-7 at St Peter's at the weekend, | :05:21. | :05:25.
making it 18 wins in a row. Guernsey beat Thanet Wanderers 56- | :05:25. | :05:31.
21 to stay top of the London One South League. They face Dover at | :05:31. | :05:36.
home next Saturday. Registration for the Jersey and | :05:36. | :05:40.
Guernsey Itex walks are now open. Thousands take on the challenge of | :05:40. | :05:44.
the year to raise money for local charities. But if you're still | :05:44. | :05:47.
deciding whether to dig out your walking shoes for the round the | :05:47. | :05:50.
island walks, Emma Chambers has been to see who you'll be raising | :05:50. | :05:58.
money for this year and how they will benefit. | :05:58. | :06:01.
Here we go again, will I ever get a tea-break? | :06:02. | :06:04.
The washing never stops at the Jersey Cheshire home. They give | :06:04. | :06:07.
round-the-clock care for 25 residents, which means these are | :06:07. | :06:10.
going round the clock to. But after 18 years, it's time for these | :06:10. | :06:13.
machines to be replaced. Thanks to the Itex walk, the home can now | :06:13. | :06:21.
afford it. The home is the 30 years old, so this is the second lot of | :06:21. | :06:26.
equipment we have replaced. It will update in many ways. It will be | :06:26. | :06:29.
male -- more eco-friendly and more water friendly, it will use less | :06:29. | :06:32.
detergent and did various jobs that cannot be done with existing | :06:32. | :06:37.
machines such as sterilising and sluicing. A great improvement and a | :06:38. | :06:41.
better service for the residents, and easier for the staff to work | :06:41. | :06:45.
with. So if you want to help, registration is now open for the | :06:45. | :06:49.
Jersey and Guernsey Itex walks. is a very friendly walk. Therefore, | :06:49. | :06:53.
the amount of support you will get from other walkers is superb. The | :06:53. | :06:58.
age read she is very wide as well. People in their seventies and | :06:58. | :07:03.
eighties were doing it last year. It is just a really good day and a | :07:03. | :07:05.
very good cause. Residents at the Jersey Cheshire | :07:05. | :07:11.
home have already seen how much Itex walkers can help them. | :07:11. | :07:17.
wonderful example of Itex support is they gave Bath sufficient money | :07:17. | :07:24.
to replace our minibus, which also takes wheelchairs and has a | :07:24. | :07:28.
hydraulic ramp on the back. We have had money before from Itex and it | :07:28. | :07:32.
has been well appreciated. you've decided to take on the Itex | :07:32. | :07:35.
challenge, you will be helping the home tackle their everyday | :07:35. | :07:37.
challenges as well as many other charities across Jersey and | :07:37. | :07:47.

Guernsey. A new library has opened in | :07:49. | :07:53.
Guernsey today, but this one is the first of its kind. It is free to | :07:53. | :07:56.
use, costs the taxpayer nothing and is open to everyone. Mike Wilkins | :07:56. | :08:03.
went to look around Guernsey's first ever community library. | :08:03. | :08:09.
This is just one of 1,300 books that have been delivered to the St | :08:09. | :08:13.
Martin's parish hall. It is the first community library in Guernsey. | :08:13. | :08:20.
The man who has put it all together is over here. What prompted you to | :08:20. | :08:26.
come up with this idea? It was one of there's little ideas that was in | :08:26. | :08:31.
the back of the head. Initially, last October and November, the idea | :08:31. | :08:36.
was to have a couple of bookshelves in the lobby of the Constable's | :08:36. | :08:42.
office and maybe have about 150 books. The public responded in a | :08:42. | :08:48.
typical Guernsey way. Before we knew it, we have 1,300 books and a | :08:48. | :08:54.
library in the lottery -- lobby became a library in the parish hall. | :08:54. | :08:59.
This morning, we had another 200 books delivered. Wonderful! Is this | :08:59. | :09:05.
a sign of bigger things to come? will could be. The library have | :09:05. | :09:08.
been in touch with us and we have been talking to them over the last | :09:08. | :09:12.
couple of weeks. They are interested in creating a set | :09:12. | :09:18.
Martyn's branch of the main library. -- Saint Martins. Initially we, we | :09:18. | :09:24.
will see how this works. If it becomes a resounding success then | :09:24. | :09:27.
maybe in a few months' time, we could have a saint Barton's branch | :09:27. | :09:33.
of the library. -- Saint Martins. I'm going to see what I can | :09:33. | :09:43.

Good evening. A cold night in store across the Channel Islands. | :09:46. | :09:50.
Temperatures getting into single figures, possibly three degrees | :09:50. | :09:55.
tonight for the larger islands. Briefly, some frost but for most of | :09:55. | :09:59.
us, temperatures around four or five degrees. The north-west wind | :09:59. | :10:04.
stays with us. No pressure to the east of the English Channel. That | :10:04. | :10:08.
made slowly away. High pressure with us for the rest of tonight and | :10:08. | :10:13.
tomorrow. Things change on Wednesday and a couple of weather | :10:13. | :10:16.
systems will come through on Wednesday, bringing rain. It could | :10:16. | :10:22.
be wet and windy there on Wednesday before back clears on Wednesday | :10:22. | :10:26.
afternoon and evening. This evening and overnight, clear skies so | :10:26. | :10:32.
rapidly, but temperatures will get into single figures. -- the | :10:32. | :10:37.

In the sunshine, feeling pleasant. The wind will be north or north- | :10:46. | :10:53.

For the rest of the week, Wednesday could be quite a damp day and windy | :11:21. | :11:25.
as well with outbreaks of rain. A brisk south-westerly breeze. The | :11:25. | :11:29.
rain will clear by early evening and then Thursday and Friday, both | :11:29. | :11:34.
there is relatively quiet. The winds drop, the sun will be out and | :11:34. | :11:40. |
