Storm-force winds rage around the island. UK and French energy

:00:22.:00:32.
:00:32.:00:52.

But and we have the sport. -- And we. Beachfront businesses in parts

:00:52.:00:55.

of Jersey couldn't open this morning after they were hit by sand

:00:55.:00:58.

storms. Overnight gales piled sand from the beach against buildings

:00:58.:01:00.

and across roads. Meanwhile in Guernsey, lifeboat crews had to

:01:00.:01:03.

rescue a French yacht after it ran into difficulty because of the bad

:01:04.:01:06.

weather. Forecasters say the weather is set to improve. Nafisa

:01:06.:01:16.
:01:16.:01:17.

Sayani reports. Sand everywhere. Staff at this Jersey cafe had to

:01:17.:01:21.

shovel their way in to work this morning after they found a wall of

:01:21.:01:25.

sand blocking the door. It was a wall of sound totally covering the

:01:25.:01:30.

door, you cannot get in. The San was everywhere. Unbelievable. We

:01:30.:01:35.

have never not been able to open the door, we can open it every day.

:01:36.:01:40.

But unfortunately cannot open today. And up the road at this wine shop,

:01:40.:01:45.

the breeze brought the beach to the car park. Amazing. We turned up to

:01:45.:01:49.

work but it was like we should have arrived on camels. Half the beach

:01:49.:01:53.

was in the car-park. We could not park anywhere. It is even round the

:01:53.:02:00.

back of the shop. In Guernsey, trees came down and authorities had

:02:00.:02:03.

to rescue this French yacht that ran into difficulty during the

:02:03.:02:10.

stormy weather. And in Alderney the owner of this yacht is in for a

:02:10.:02:13.

shock after it was wrecked and washed up on Braye Beach over the

:02:13.:02:15.

weekend. Authorities across the islands say they coped well with

:02:16.:02:19.

the conditions and remain prepared. We have had sand, over in the past

:02:19.:02:23.

but not in these quantities. I think it is because of the high

:02:23.:02:28.

winds we have had which have made it terrible. But while businesses

:02:28.:02:31.

have been working hard to clear up the mess, for some it's just an

:02:32.:02:37.

excuse to play. And Emily is here with the forecast later in the

:02:37.:02:44.

Could more volunteers be the answer to raising reading standards at

:02:44.:02:47.

Guernsey's primary schools? It was a key point raised in a recent

:02:47.:02:50.

report looking at primary education in the Island but is something

:02:50.:02:53.

that's already happening at some local schools. So how much of a

:02:53.:03:03.
:03:03.:03:06.

difference has it made? Penny A fan of dinosaur and shipwreck

:03:06.:03:10.

books, John is just one of a number of pupils at Amherst who gets extra

:03:10.:03:16.

help reading thanks to these volunteers. I think they are quite

:03:16.:03:21.

nice because when we get stuck on a word they help us spell it.

:03:21.:03:28.

really like when I get stuck on tricky words. Then they help me.

:03:28.:03:34.

They normally just help Bass with the first word and then help us for

:03:34.:03:38.

the other words. Staff from a local finance company, they've been

:03:38.:03:42.

helping out here each week for the last few years. Now it is

:03:42.:03:45.

established it is easy to run. We turn up each week, the children

:03:45.:03:50.

read to us, we go back to work. It is amazing to see the development

:03:50.:03:53.

from the first term to the end of the third term. The children love

:03:53.:03:57.

it and I find a delightful to see children picking up books, reading

:03:57.:04:02.

so enthusiastically and feeling like to are part of it makes you

:04:02.:04:09.

feel quite special. At the end of the first year of the project were

:04:09.:04:16.

exceeded the target we had got for reading by 13%. The second year 60%

:04:16.:04:20.

of children in year two had made accelerated progress, so that is

:04:20.:04:26.

almost double what we had hoped they would make. That has continued.

:04:26.:04:34.

We are still seeing improvements. We are delighted. The pressure is

:04:34.:04:37.

on to improve reading standards across the Island's schools,

:04:37.:04:39.

including here at Amherst. So could more outside help inside the

:04:39.:04:47.

classroom be the answer? Could a new energy cable be built between

:04:47.:04:50.

Alderney, France and the UK? A group of UK and French politicians

:04:50.:04:53.

have been in the northern isle today to learn more about

:04:53.:04:56.

Alderney's renewable energy industry and how they can be a part

:04:56.:05:03.

of it. David Earl reports. everything goes to plan, lectricite

:05:03.:05:06.

de France plans to deploy a group of underwater turbines in the Bay

:05:06.:05:16.
:05:16.:05:20.

of St Malo later this year. -- Electricite. It will be the largest

:05:20.:05:23.

project of its kind and will be used to feed marine renewable

:05:23.:05:25.

energy into the French electricity grid. The 800 tonne turbines are

:05:26.:05:29.

manufactured by an Irish company Open Hydro which has a a 20% stake

:05:29.:05:31.

in Alderney Renewable Energy. ARE hopes to export renewable energy to

:05:32.:05:34.

the United Kingdom, which is struggling to meet its commitment

:05:34.:05:44.
:05:44.:05:50.

to generate 20% of its energy needs by 2020. The problem is that the

:05:50.:05:52.

Island needs an underwater cable connecting it to both France and

:05:52.:05:55.

the French delegation, headed by the President of the Conseil

:05:55.:05:58.

General de la Manche, Jean Francois Le Grand, was equally enthusiastic.

:05:58.:06:01.

We have been talking about how we might harness the two together. It

:06:01.:06:11.

is a really exciting project. here today to meet the UK minister

:06:11.:06:16.

of energy because we have common projects between Alderney and lamb

:06:16.:06:23.

monde about tidal turbines power and we are very interested by this

:06:23.:06:33.

project. -- La Manche. Clearly the "entente cordiale" generated at

:06:33.:06:36.

today's historic meeting bodes well for the future of renewable energy

:06:36.:06:46.
:06:46.:06:48.

here in Alderney. It's still unclear why two thirds of houses in

:06:48.:06:50.

Guernsey were left without electricity last night after the

:06:50.:06:53.

undersea cable to Jersey failed. Homes in St Peter Port, St Martins,

:06:53.:06:56.

the Western Parishes and the Vale were without power for around half

:06:56.:06:59.

an hour from just before 7pm. Guernsey Electricity started a

:06:59.:07:02.

backup generator and the lights were back on by 7.30pm. They're now

:07:02.:07:06.

investigating the cause. Pat Dubras, a stalwart of Jersey's amateur

:07:06.:07:13.

dramatic scene has died. In an online tribute she's been described

:07:13.:07:17.

as a driving force in the amateur theatre world, and a true lady of

:07:17.:07:20.

the theatre who'll be sadly missed. She died at Jersey Hospice Care

:07:20.:07:24.

yesterday. A 15-year-old boy is in hospital after an accident with a

:07:24.:07:27.

car on Mont Millais. Jersey Police got a call just after 3.40pm this

:07:27.:07:31.

afternoon that a pedestrian had been hurt outside JCG. And up to 30

:07:31.:07:34.

dockworkers are at risk after George Troy and Sons has gone into

:07:34.:07:37.

liquidation. They're the only firm with a Stevedores license.

:07:37.:07:39.

Politicians in Jersey are now worried what will happen to the

:07:39.:07:42.

Island's freight service. Jersey will be playing European football

:07:42.:07:45.

next season after a dramatic win in the FA inter league cup final. They

:07:45.:07:48.

beat the Isle of Man and will now represent England but they were

:07:48.:07:51.

just seconds away from defeat, as Ian Kelly reports. The pre-match

:07:51.:07:55.

talk was all about the pitch. This may look like grass but it's a

:07:55.:07:58.

actually plastic, the first time an artificial surface has been used

:07:58.:08:08.
:08:08.:08:09.

for a FA final. Would the crowd and the pitch give the Isle of Man the

:08:09.:08:16.

ultimate home advantage? It was the Isle of Man, playing in Jersey's

:08:16.:08:19.

usual red colours, who took the lead. An unfamiliar pitch, an

:08:19.:08:26.

unfamiliar kit, maybe this wasn't going to be Jersey's day. It took a

:08:26.:08:29.

couple of fine saves from Craig Fletcher to keep Jersey in the game.

:08:29.:08:35.

But time was quickly running out. Into the last minute of injury time

:08:35.:08:40.

and it was time for route one football. They say the game isn't

:08:40.:08:45.

over until it's over. Suddenly a lifeline. The scores level, extra

:08:45.:08:51.

time was called for. Jersey seemed to be getting the measure of the

:08:51.:08:55.

pitch. This clumsy challenge gave them a penalty. If Jack Canon was

:08:55.:09:05.
:09:05.:09:10.

An eye for goal and for the camera. The Isle of Man tried to summon the

:09:10.:09:16.

energy for a fight back but this was Jersey's day. So long

:09:16.:09:19.

overshadowed by the success of their island's rugby team, now it

:09:19.:09:29.
:09:29.:09:34.

was their time to celebrate. We knew we were down to the last

:09:34.:09:38.

couple of minutes but always said we have belief, hunger. This is all

:09:38.:09:43.

the players want. We want to play in front of big crowds. I was not

:09:43.:09:47.

happy with the artificial pitch when it was announced but it is a

:09:47.:09:54.

good service. We would have rather be played on grass but no excuses.

:09:54.:09:56.

I can't take away the character and determination the players showed

:09:56.:10:05.

today. These players will be pulling on the England shirt in San

:10:05.:10:12.

Marino in the autumn, living every amateurs footballer's dream. And if

:10:12.:10:15.

the pitch happens to be artificial, well, they'll take it in their

:10:15.:10:25.
:10:25.:10:27.

Rugby - Jersey rounded off their greatest ever season with a 23-8

:10:27.:10:29.

win over Fylde, before being presented with the National One

:10:29.:10:39.
:10:39.:10:44.

Edward Sault was there. atmosphere at St Peters on Saturday

:10:44.:10:47.

was simply electric as a bumper crowd came to support the team who

:10:47.:10:52.

had rounded off a perfect season. Jerseys celebrating their win, it

:10:52.:10:57.

should be great for the whole community. We're very proud. Pretty

:10:57.:11:07.
:11:07.:11:08.

excited. It will be a good game. And it was, despite a determined

:11:08.:11:11.

Fylde side, Jersey's 23-8 win was built on defence. Two penalties, a

:11:11.:11:15.

penalty try and conversion took the halftime score to 13 -0. Ross

:11:15.:11:18.

Broadfoot's kicking and another penalty try increased Jersey's lead

:11:18.:11:27.

to 23-3. We had to be on form today and for the Le -- first 20 minutes

:11:27.:11:30.

we were under pressure. I thought we played really well, especially

:11:30.:11:39.

in defence. But no time to rest. have a big weekend next weekend so

:11:39.:11:43.

another week of hard work, then a few weeks off before we get

:11:43.:11:46.

together on June 4th and prepare for next season. A lot of work

:11:46.:11:54.

ahead. And for Steve O Brien this was his last match and one that was

:11:54.:11:57.

clearly emotional. I have been lucky to play with some wonderful

:11:57.:12:02.

players since I have come to the island. Great guys. It continues

:12:02.:12:12.
:12:12.:12:29.

now. But this was the moment the Guernsey and Jersey's rugby and

:12:29.:12:32.

football teams have had a triumphant season. They'll of

:12:32.:12:35.

course face each other in the Muratti final and Siam cup next

:12:35.:12:38.

week. But this was the perfect round off to a spectacular season

:12:38.:12:41.

of Channel Island sport. So let's see what the weather brings next,

:12:41.:12:51.
:12:51.:12:51.

More settled and dry weather to come in the week ahead. It will

:12:51.:12:55.

turn dry and warm Faure time in the middle of the week ahead. It has

:12:55.:13:00.

been low pressure dominating the weather. This area has made its way

:13:00.:13:03.

south West woods. It becomes more settled by the end of the day

:13:03.:13:07.

tomorrow with just a few shells around and by the time we get to

:13:07.:13:11.

Wednesday some high pressure is starting to influence whether, so a

:13:11.:13:15.

greater chance of sunshine and to budget will respond to that. It

:13:15.:13:20.

will be warmer air during the day. Tonight there is still heavy rain

:13:20.:13:28.

and strong winds for a time. They he's off later in the night.

:13:28.:13:34.

Temperatures are milder overnight. It will be a wet start to the day

:13:34.:13:38.

tomorrow but the rain should quickly clearer way, followed by

:13:38.:13:42.

the chance of a couple of showers in the afternoon with winds coming

:13:42.:13:52.
:13:52.:13:53.

in from the south or south-east. Rain and the risk of showers

:13:53.:14:03.
:14:03.:14:17.

generally, moderate disability at The water looks pretty flat for

:14:17.:14:23.

surfing. In terms of sunshine it should improve towards the middle

:14:23.:14:28.

of the week. Wednesday looked dry with sunny spells and it should

:14:28.:14:32.

feel pleasantly warm. Similar day through Thursday but unsettled

:14:32.:14:42.
:14:42.:14:45.

Guernsey's Chief Minister hustings get underway at 7pm this evening at

:14:45.:14:48.

the grammar school, ahead of tomorrow's election. We'll have the
