A former Guernsey tennis coach has gone on trial in Guernsey today | :00:51. | :00:55.
accused of indecently assaulting two young girls. Jose Felix Alvarez | :00:55. | :01:00.
faces six charges relating to alleged incidents during the 1990s. | :01:00. | :01:05.
Mike Wilkins was in court. Arriving at Court this morning | :01:05. | :01:08.
wearing sunglasses and a black suit, the well-known tennis coach Jose | :01:08. | :01:10.
Felix Alvarez, who is accused of indecently assaulting two of his | :01:10. | :01:17.
pupils. Today, here at Guernsey's Royal Court, Advocate Calderwood | :01:17. | :01:21.
set out the prosecution's case in his opening statement. 47-year-old | :01:21. | :01:23.
Jose Felix Alvarez faces six charges of indecently assaulting | :01:23. | :01:31.
two young girls during their tennis lessons in the 1990s. Mr Alvarez | :01:31. | :01:36.
denies the charges. Reporting restrictions were imposed today, | :01:36. | :01:40.
banning the media from repeating much of the evidence heard. This | :01:40. | :01:43.
afternoon the court heard from the first alleged victim and more | :01:43. | :01:45.
prosecution witnesses are expected to give evidence tomorrow before | :01:45. | :01:50.
the defence begins its case. The trial is expected to last a | :01:50. | :01:56.
fortnight. Guernsey's politicians have | :01:57. | :02:01.
rejected plans to freeze their own pay for four years. It means their | :02:01. | :02:05.
salaries will go up in line with average earnings. Our reporter | :02:05. | :02:08.
Penny Elderfield was following the debate and joins me now live from | :02:08. | :02:11.
our Guernsey newsroom. Penny, firstly, why was this pay freeze | :02:11. | :02:19.
even a possibility? Since the current pay deal was | :02:19. | :02:21.
agreed, there's been an election. The thought was that a new | :02:21. | :02:25.
government might take a new stance on how much they should get paid. | :02:25. | :02:28.
So, a group of deputies brought forward plans that would have seen | :02:28. | :02:33.
their pay frozen till 2016. Arguing if the public were facing tough | :02:33. | :02:43.
times, they should all take a hit, too. In the private sector we have | :02:43. | :02:52.
had pay freezes, job losses, pay cuts. It is time that the link to | :02:52. | :02:55.
automatic pay increases in the public sector, which include | :02:55. | :02:59.
deputies, should be broken. large majority of the States were | :02:59. | :03:03.
against freezing their pay, why? The key argument was that in order | :03:03. | :03:06.
to attract a good range of candidates from a range backgrounds, | :03:06. | :03:09.
the salary has to remain attractive and be enough to allow people to do | :03:09. | :03:14.
it as their full-time job. Others said by sending out the message pay | :03:14. | :03:16.
freezes were acceptable, the private sector might take that on | :03:16. | :03:21.
board at a time when the States want to get the economy moving. And | :03:21. | :03:25.
then there were those that just didn't think this was a debate the | :03:25. | :03:33.
States should be having at all. is totally inappropriate. No | :03:33. | :03:39.
organisation should talk about its own day. Independent investigation | :03:39. | :03:45.
should be set up. So, the result of today's decision is that their | :03:45. | :03:49.
salary will go up each year in line with average earnings locally. But | :03:49. | :03:51.
that also means that if that figure doesn't increase, neither will | :03:51. | :03:59.
their pay. Sports in Jersey will get an extra | :03:59. | :04:02.
100,000. It's to help the Island Games team get to the Bermuda Games | :04:02. | :04:05.
next year and invest in sport before the Games come to Jersey in | :04:05. | :04:08.
2015. It comes after concerns about the original travel costs, | :04:08. | :04:16.
estimated at 2,000 per athlete to get to Bermuda. More details have | :04:16. | :04:19.
emerged about a proposal for Jersey's Government to buy land at | :04:19. | :04:22.
Plemont. The Chief Minister wants to spend 8 million of public money | :04:22. | :04:25.
on the former Pontins holiday camp site and sell it to the National | :04:25. | :04:33.
Trust for Jersey for 2 million. They want to return the land to | :04:33. | :04:36.
nature. The proposals come as an independent inquiry is underway | :04:36. | :04:39.
into plans to build homes on the site, but the architect behind | :04:39. | :04:42.
those plans says its owners want 14 million if they are to sell. | :04:42. | :04:44.
Rubbish isn't usually a star visitor attraction, but for | :04:44. | :04:50.
businesses in Jersey, this week, it is! They're getting a rare look | :04:50. | :04:53.
inside the island's incinerator in a bid to make them think twice | :04:53. | :04:56.
about what they do with their waste. Our reporter, Nafisa Sayani, joined | :04:56. | :05:02.
them. It's a familiar sight on Jersey's | :05:02. | :05:05.
landscape, but ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at the | :05:05. | :05:09.
island's incinerator? Well today, its doors have been opened to local | :05:09. | :05:15.
businesses so they can find out. As Eco-Active firms, they're leading | :05:15. | :05:18.
the way when it comes to recycling schemes and they have been invited | :05:18. | :05:21.
on a tour of the waste site, which is normally restricted to the | :05:21. | :05:31.
:05:31. | :05:32. | ||
public. I just came because it is curious. You see this huge block | :05:32. | :05:36.
being built and you want to understand a bit more about it. | :05:36. | :05:42.
Seeing what it is being used for us quite reassuring. This tour is one | :05:42. | :05:45.
of a number of events happening during Recycle for Jersey Week, | :05:45. | :05:48.
aimed at spreading the recycling word. Bosses have even drafted in | :05:48. | :05:52.
the help of this handsome fellow. Known as Mr Robot and made of old | :05:52. | :05:55.
household appliances, he's been out and about all over the island. With | :05:55. | :05:59.
plans to make Recycle for Jersey Week an annual event, this could be | :05:59. | :06:02.
just the push needed to get the whole island all fired up about | :06:02. | :06:05.
waste. Generally we are becoming more and more aware of for Social | :06:05. | :06:08.
responsibility and we have got to continue. There was so much more | :06:08. | :06:12.
that be can do. We think it is important to start young and | :06:12. | :06:15.
hopefully it will become a lifestyle change and people will | :06:15. | :06:22.
just get into the habit of making good recycling decisions. With | :06:22. | :06:25.
plans to make Recycle for Jersey Week an annual event, this could be | :06:25. | :06:28.
just the push needed to get the whole island all fired up about | :06:28. | :06:38.
waste. You'll can see all of the publicly-owned Channel Islands oil | :06:38. | :06:42.
paintings in a new catalogue. It's been published by charity, the | :06:42. | :06:44.
Public Catalogue Foundation, which is putting together all the oil | :06:44. | :06:47.
paintings in public ownership in the UK. The Channel Islands volume | :06:47. | :06:50.
contains around 1,800 paintings on display and in storage. It's taken | :06:50. | :06:53.
three years to put together by islander Anne Binney with the help | :06:53. | :06:56.
of Fred Hohler, the founder of the charity. They believe it's an | :06:56. | :07:06.
:07:06. | :07:10. | ||
important record. It shows the history of the islands | :07:10. | :07:13.
before photography. We have wonderful landscapes and portraits | :07:13. | :07:23.
:07:23. | :07:26. | ||
from the early-day -- early days. It shows the scale of a lot of | :07:26. | :07:32.
local artists. The Channel Islands have kept all of their paintings in | :07:32. | :07:37.
their galleries, so what you're looking at is a family album. He is | :07:37. | :07:43.
a family photograph album and it tells this story of these islands. | :07:43. | :07:48.
I know of no other catalogue that has that story telling effect | :07:48. | :07:56.
uniquely within its covers. The poor weather has had an impact | :07:56. | :07:59.
on apple crops in Guernsey not good news if you're a local cider | :07:59. | :08:02.
company. But if you've got surplus supplies in your own garden perhaps | :08:02. | :08:05.
you can help. Oliver Farrimond reports. | :08:05. | :08:10.
Ripe and ready for pressing. But whilst the sun's out today, the | :08:10. | :08:16.
lack of it this year has had an impact here. And this is one of the | :08:16. | :08:24.
worst crops for years. It warned done, then went cold, was damp and | :08:24. | :08:30.
windy. Consequently, the blossoms did not set. That means it will be | :08:30. | :08:36.
able to make less cider. It'll be quite a balancing act keeping | :08:36. | :08:41.
everybody supplied next year. It does make my job more difficult. | :08:41. | :08:44.
For the last few years apple supplies have been topped up by the | :08:44. | :08:48.
public. Trading their own crop in for cash or the final product. And | :08:48. | :08:52.
the owners will be hoping for more than usual to make up the shortfall. | :08:52. | :08:56.
We have seen more people because we have been publicising it this year, | :08:56. | :09:00.
but what smaller quantities. Hopefully we will get about 10 tons | :09:00. | :09:06.
of apples. Ready to press, the next lot of apples it may not have been | :09:06. | :09:09.
the best of seasons. But everyone here will be hoping for a more | :09:09. | :09:14.
fruitful one next year Finally, a baby gorilla's been born at Durrell | :09:14. | :09:19.
wildlife park for the first time in nearly a decade. Mum, Hlala Kahilli, | :09:19. | :09:24.
gave birth this morning, which is dad Badongo's birthday. It's the | :09:24. | :09:27.
first offspring for the pair and was due in November, so it's early | :09:27. | :09:34.
arrival this morning came as a surprise to keepers. | :09:34. | :09:40.
We came in this morning and we found the mother with the infants | :09:40. | :09:46.
doing well. It was amazing for us. It is earlier than we expected, but | :09:46. | :09:49.
we obviously got our calculations a little bit wrong and missed the | :09:49. | :09:55.
meeting with her. It is fantastic news. We're really, really pleased. | :09:55. | :10:00.
There are more pictures of that arrival on good Jersey pictures | :10:00. | :10:10.
:10:10. | :10:10. | ||
There is the chance of a few showers around tomorrow. It will be | :10:10. | :10:17.
breezy, as well. That changed tomorrow as this weather front is | :10:17. | :10:21.
weakening as it heads across us and it will bring some showers for a | :10:21. | :10:24.
time. At the time we get to Saturday to a weather front has | :10:24. | :10:28.
cleared away. We should see some sunshine for the weekend. For | :10:28. | :10:33.
tonight, there is a fair amount of cloud around overnight. It will be | :10:33. | :10:38.
dry initially tonight's, but in the early hours of the morning we might | :10:38. | :10:42.
start to see the Roger hour creeping in. The wind will increase | :10:42. | :10:46.
overnight. Temperatures will be no law than 12 degrees. First thing | :10:46. | :10:50.
tomorrow morning it will still be quite cloudy. There will be the | :10:50. | :10:55.
chance of some brighter spells, but by the end of the they think we | :10:55. | :11:00.
will be seeing the showers moving. It'll be breezy from the west and | :11:00. | :11:07.
south-west. We too have the isolated showers, but generally | :11:07. | :11:17.
:11:17. | :11:38. | ||
Towards the weekend will see some fine and dry weather. I think on | :11:38. | :11:42.
Saturday we will will see a good deal of clear proof -- clear blue | :11:42. | :11:50. |
