We join Liberation Day celebrations around the islands as young and old

remember the end of the occupation. Fantastic. It is my third time of

being here. The emblem of freedom. A poignant

day for the Guernseyman in this iconic photograph.

Also tonight, remembering Antoine. Why the family of a child who died

of a brain tumour are raising Thousands of people in the Channel

Islands have been celebrating the day Jersey and Guernsey were freed

from German occupation 68 years ago. Crowds gathered in St Helier and St

Peter Port to mark the end of five years of German rule on the 9th of

To many, this is the side of Liberation Day that matters the

most. By 10 o'clock, crowds packed out Jersey's Liberation Square to

mark one of the most important days in the history of the Channel

Islands. Happy Liberation Day. meet in the name of God who made us

at who knows us... It was a chance to remember, and to reflect on the

day, 68 years ago when Jersey was finally freed after five years of

German occupation. The was see that the order people, those who were

there, it is very emotional for them. This was one of the

particularly emotional moments, as Liberation Day was re-enacted

decades on. And then, what a moment for this team of cyclists who had

pedalled to Bad Wurzach in Germany and back to bring a message of

goodwill to the crowd. Take you all, I send my sincere or gratings and

best wishes on your Liberation Day. -- by sincere gratings. I know this

will be celebrated in the most honourable way. And similar scenes

here in Guernsey. We are leading the parade with our banks. We have

done it before and we are very proud of it. It is great to get the

youngsters involved as well. This is a serious part of Liberation Day.

It is a great honour to be here. And crowds quickly gathered to

watch this important part of the day.

But as well as being a chance to remember, Liberation Day is also a

chance to celebrate. And for people It is our day. It is Guernsey's day.

It is Liberation Day. And the Islands certainly know how to throw

a party. It helps to keep history alive it was stop and what the

older people did for us as well. It is so special. If the children know

about it, it is keeping it alive. It is a time for remembering the

war, basically. And having a good time.

In Jersey too, the celebrations carried on into the afternoon. A

chance to rejoice and remember this signifcant day 68 years ago when

the Channel Islands were set free. Despite the passing of time, for

some who endured the Occupation, the memories remain vivid. Charles

Langlois was a teenager in Guernsey when the Germans occupied his

island. Mike Wilkins spent the day with Charles to find out what

For the young man in this photograph, almost seven decades on,

the headlines may have changed, but the affection he feels for the

liberating force who gave him his freedom remains the same. To see

them, Shaw was just unbelievable. I know that everybody says the same,

but it is something you cannot forget. After a quick cup of tea

this morning, Charles was determined to find his grandson who

was on parade today. You expect to see the old people down here, but

it is surprising to see the young ones as well. Very smart. Aren't we

the lucky ones? They look very smart. Congratulations. We have to

remember what people went through. Especially the people who were here

during the operation, like my grandfather. It does you good.

Youngsters have such a bad image, we all -- we tend to say... It will

not be a quiet night for the neighbours. But we will keep their

cancer in Jersey are getting more support thanks to a local couple

who have raised more than �100,000. Paul and Anne Willing set up the

Antoine Trust after they lost their seven-year-old son to the disease

last year. Since then, they have helped fund a new specialist

children's cancer nurse for Jersey's General Hospital. Nafisa

Sayani went to meet them. Nobody can describe what it is like to

lose a child. But to go through the years of treatment, whatever the

outcome, the uncertainty and, to be honest, the misery of going through

that process is something you just can't describe. So anything that

can be done to alleviate that and improve the level of care for both

the children and their families is something that we are very keen to

explore. Antoine Willing was diagnosed with a brain tumour just

after his fifth birthday. For him and his parents, that meant regular

trips to and from Southampton Hospital for cancer treatment.

Nobody can describe what it is like Antoine died last April after two

years fighting the disease. In his memory, his parents set up the

Antoine Trust. From donations to the charity, they have funded a

specialist nurse at Jersey General Hospital to co-ordinate care

between the UK and here. Primarily, a lot of the care is done in the UK,

so it's important to bridge that gap between us here in Jersey and

the UK and develop close working and professional relationships

between the two centres. Then at least, when the families are going

over, they have got names, they have got points of contact, they

have got references. That extra support has come too late for Anne

and Paul, but knowing there will be more help for other young cancer

patients and their families brings Good evening. Tomorrow, it will

remain breezy. Still on the cool side. This area of low pressure has

been quite a deep one for the time of year. It is moving out of the

way tonight, moving into the North Sea. Further weather systems will

bring outbreaks of rain into the end of the day. Saturday is a bit

more straight forward with a mix of sunshine and showers. Some more

persistent rain for a time tonight. That will fade away and it will

become largely dry. The wind will start to drop. Tomorrow, a risk of

showers. Later in the day, some more persistent rain could move

across the area. It is a West or south-westerly Force 5 up. Showers
