Good evening. Coming up this evening. | :00:13. | :00:16.
We join Liberation Day celebrations around the islands as young and old | :00:16. | :00:21.
remember the end of the occupation. Fantastic. It is my third time of | :00:21. | :00:25.
being here. The emblem of freedom. A poignant | :00:25. | :00:27.
day for the Guernseyman in this iconic photograph. | :00:27. | :00:33.
Also tonight, remembering Antoine. Why the family of a child who died | :00:33. | :00:43.
:00:43. | :00:45. | ||
of a brain tumour are raising Thousands of people in the Channel | :00:45. | :00:48.
Islands have been celebrating the day Jersey and Guernsey were freed | :00:48. | :00:52.
from German occupation 68 years ago. Crowds gathered in St Helier and St | :00:52. | :00:56.
Peter Port to mark the end of five years of German rule on the 9th of | :00:56. | :01:06.
:01:06. | :01:08. | ||
To many, this is the side of Liberation Day that matters the | :01:08. | :01:11.
most. By 10 o'clock, crowds packed out Jersey's Liberation Square to | :01:11. | :01:14.
mark one of the most important days in the history of the Channel | :01:14. | :01:24.
:01:24. | :01:30. | ||
Islands. Happy Liberation Day. meet in the name of God who made us | :01:30. | :01:37.
at who knows us... It was a chance to remember, and to reflect on the | :01:37. | :01:40.
day, 68 years ago when Jersey was finally freed after five years of | :01:40. | :01:47.
German occupation. The was see that the order people, those who were | :01:47. | :01:53.
there, it is very emotional for them. This was one of the | :01:53. | :01:56.
particularly emotional moments, as Liberation Day was re-enacted | :01:56. | :02:05.
decades on. And then, what a moment for this team of cyclists who had | :02:05. | :02:08.
pedalled to Bad Wurzach in Germany and back to bring a message of | :02:09. | :02:14.
goodwill to the crowd. Take you all, I send my sincere or gratings and | :02:14. | :02:24.
:02:24. | :02:24. | ||
best wishes on your Liberation Day. -- by sincere gratings. I know this | :02:24. | :02:31.
will be celebrated in the most honourable way. And similar scenes | :02:31. | :02:38.
here in Guernsey. We are leading the parade with our banks. We have | :02:38. | :02:43.
done it before and we are very proud of it. It is great to get the | :02:43. | :02:50.
youngsters involved as well. This is a serious part of Liberation Day. | :02:50. | :02:56.
It is a great honour to be here. And crowds quickly gathered to | :02:56. | :03:03.
watch this important part of the day. | :03:03. | :03:07.
But as well as being a chance to remember, Liberation Day is also a | :03:07. | :03:17.
:03:17. | :03:24. | ||
chance to celebrate. And for people It is our day. It is Guernsey's day. | :03:24. | :03:28.
It is Liberation Day. And the Islands certainly know how to throw | :03:28. | :03:36.
a party. It helps to keep history alive it was stop and what the | :03:36. | :03:40.
older people did for us as well. It is so special. If the children know | :03:40. | :03:46.
about it, it is keeping it alive. It is a time for remembering the | :03:46. | :03:53.
war, basically. And having a good time. | :03:53. | :03:56.
In Jersey too, the celebrations carried on into the afternoon. A | :03:56. | :03:59.
chance to rejoice and remember this signifcant day 68 years ago when | :03:59. | :04:05.
the Channel Islands were set free. Despite the passing of time, for | :04:05. | :04:07.
some who endured the Occupation, the memories remain vivid. Charles | :04:07. | :04:10.
Langlois was a teenager in Guernsey when the Germans occupied his | :04:10. | :04:13.
island. Mike Wilkins spent the day with Charles to find out what | :04:13. | :04:23.
:04:23. | :04:31. | ||
For the young man in this photograph, almost seven decades on, | :04:31. | :04:34.
the headlines may have changed, but the affection he feels for the | :04:34. | :04:42.
liberating force who gave him his freedom remains the same. To see | :04:42. | :04:47.
them, Shaw was just unbelievable. I know that everybody says the same, | :04:47. | :04:52.
but it is something you cannot forget. After a quick cup of tea | :04:53. | :04:55.
this morning, Charles was determined to find his grandson who | :04:55. | :05:01.
was on parade today. You expect to see the old people down here, but | :05:01. | :05:11.
:05:11. | :05:11. | ||
it is surprising to see the young ones as well. Very smart. Aren't we | :05:11. | :05:21.
:05:21. | :05:22. | ||
the lucky ones? They look very smart. Congratulations. We have to | :05:22. | :05:26.
remember what people went through. Especially the people who were here | :05:26. | :05:32.
during the operation, like my grandfather. It does you good. | :05:32. | :05:42.
:05:42. | :05:54. | ||
Youngsters have such a bad image, we all -- we tend to say... It will | :05:54. | :05:57.
not be a quiet night for the neighbours. But we will keep their | :05:57. | :06:07.
:06:07. | :06:15. | ||
windows closed and hope for the best. You can see more photos from | :06:15. | :06:17.
the Liberation Day celebrations around the islands on our Facebook | :06:17. | :06:23.
Page. Just search for CI News. Families of children diagnosed with | :06:23. | :06:26.
cancer in Jersey are getting more support thanks to a local couple | :06:26. | :06:30.
who have raised more than 100,000. Paul and Anne Willing set up the | :06:30. | :06:32.
Antoine Trust after they lost their seven-year-old son to the disease | :06:32. | :06:35.
last year. Since then, they have helped fund a new specialist | :06:35. | :06:37.
children's cancer nurse for Jersey's General Hospital. Nafisa | :06:37. | :06:40.
Sayani went to meet them. Nobody can describe what it is like to | :06:40. | :06:44.
lose a child. But to go through the years of treatment, whatever the | :06:44. | :06:47.
outcome, the uncertainty and, to be honest, the misery of going through | :06:47. | :06:49.
that process is something you just can't describe. So anything that | :06:49. | :06:53.
can be done to alleviate that and improve the level of care for both | :06:53. | :06:56.
the children and their families is something that we are very keen to | :06:56. | :06:59.
explore. Antoine Willing was diagnosed with a brain tumour just | :06:59. | :07:02.
after his fifth birthday. For him and his parents, that meant regular | :07:02. | :07:04.
trips to and from Southampton Hospital for cancer treatment. | :07:04. | :07:14.
:07:14. | :07:24. | ||
Nobody can describe what it is like Antoine died last April after two | :07:24. | :07:27.
years fighting the disease. In his memory, his parents set up the | :07:27. | :07:30.
Antoine Trust. From donations to the charity, they have funded a | :07:30. | :07:32.
specialist nurse at Jersey General Hospital to co-ordinate care | :07:32. | :07:40.
between the UK and here. Primarily, a lot of the care is done in the UK, | :07:40. | :07:44.
so it's important to bridge that gap between us here in Jersey and | :07:44. | :07:46.
the UK and develop close working and professional relationships | :07:46. | :07:49.
between the two centres. Then at least, when the families are going | :07:49. | :07:52.
over, they have got names, they have got points of contact, they | :07:52. | :07:55.
have got references. That extra support has come too late for Anne | :07:55. | :07:58.
and Paul, but knowing there will be more help for other young cancer | :07:58. | :08:08.
:08:08. | :08:11. | ||
patients and their families brings Good evening. Tomorrow, it will | :08:11. | :08:20.
remain breezy. Still on the cool side. This area of low pressure has | :08:20. | :08:24.
been quite a deep one for the time of year. It is moving out of the | :08:24. | :08:33.
way tonight, moving into the North Sea. Further weather systems will | :08:33. | :08:37.
bring outbreaks of rain into the end of the day. Saturday is a bit | :08:37. | :08:42.
more straight forward with a mix of sunshine and showers. Some more | :08:42. | :08:47.
persistent rain for a time tonight. That will fade away and it will | :08:47. | :08:55.
become largely dry. The wind will start to drop. Tomorrow, a risk of | :08:55. | :09:05.
:09:05. | :09:07. | ||
showers. Later in the day, some more persistent rain could move | :09:07. | :09:15.
across the area. It is a West or south-westerly Force 5 up. Showers | :09:15. | :09:25.
:09:25. | :09:38. | ||
of and then fares. Generally good The outlook is unsettled. We will | :09:38. | :09:44.
see further outbreaks of rain. On Saturday, there could be a lot of | :09:44. | :09:48.
dry weather around after some showers first thing. On Sunday, | :09:48. | :09:52. |
