Good evening. Parents fight back — anger at plans to close two Guernsey | :00:09. | :00:20.
primary schools. It would have made life difficult for the children. Why | :00:20. | :00:26.
would the education give a dam? Open the door to skilled workers — | :00:26. | :00:30.
the calls from business leaders to boost Jersey's economy. | :00:30. | :00:37.
And where can you find at first hand a Skullsplitter and a Bobby Dazzler. | :00:37. | :00:42.
I will tell you later in the programme. | :00:42. | :00:51.
Good evening. Parents have reacted angrily to news two primary schools | :00:51. | :00:52.
in Guernsey could close. Under Education's plans, St | :00:52. | :01:06.
Sampson's Infants would shut next year, and St Andrews Primary the | :01:06. | :01:09.
year after. It's not the first time the schools have faced the threat of | :01:09. | :01:13.
closure, and parents intend to put up a fight again. As Penny | :01:13. | :01:15.
Elderfield reports. Lessons as usual for pupils at St | :01:15. | :01:23.
Sampson's Infants. For the parents though, it's time to start | :01:23. | :01:26.
campaigning. And if one word could sum up how many feel today on | :01:26. | :01:29.
hearing the news this school could close next September, it's... | :01:29. | :01:39.
Gutted. Not really much else that can explain it. He hasn't even done | :01:39. | :01:47.
a whole day. Why men and we told this would happen? We could have | :01:47. | :01:51.
sent him to eight different school. They didn't want people to do that | :01:51. | :01:54.
because it would make life difficult for them. Never mind making it | :01:54. | :02:01.
difficult for the children. For St Andrews Primary the plan is to shut | :02:01. | :02:10.
it gradually by 2015. It is very disappointing that we are again | :02:10. | :02:15.
facing closures. We have got to focus on the needs of our children | :02:15. | :02:19.
and continue to ensure we offer the best education possible. The problem | :02:20. | :02:23.
Education faces is that empty seats still cost money and there are more | :02:23. | :02:26.
than 500 surplus places across the Island's schools. And it's estimated | :02:26. | :02:29.
closing St Sampson's Infants, and St Andrews could save up to £800,000 a | :02:29. | :02:35.
year. But the department says it's not just about the money as there | :02:35. | :02:39.
are benefits to moving to just having bigger schools which take two | :02:39. | :02:48.
or three forms each year. If you are going to close the skills you have | :02:48. | :02:55.
to think about... If you look at the UK there are closures going on all | :02:55. | :03:00.
the time. You don't close their larger skills because for all sorts | :03:00. | :03:04.
of reasons, you actually get better outcomes. But that means looking at | :03:04. | :03:08.
the numbers — others could be in threat further down the line. Forest | :03:08. | :03:11.
Primary and La Houguette are all on the list to be looked at in years to | :03:11. | :03:15.
come. And the Island's Catholic schools could be merged. But for St | :03:15. | :03:19.
Sampson's and St Andrews this isn't the first time they've overcome the | :03:19. | :03:24.
threat of closure. So why will this time be any different? I can't | :03:24. | :03:33.
predict any more than you can. There will be a lively debate and it will | :03:33. | :03:39.
be intense. We will know the answer on the 1st of November at the | :03:39. | :03:41.
latest. Education is expecting parents to make a bit of noise about | :03:41. | :03:46.
this. And from talking to them here today, that's exactly what they're | :03:46. | :03:53.
going to get. Well lots of comment from you on | :03:53. | :03:57.
this one, as you'd expect, on our Facebook pages. Darren Lilley | :03:57. | :04:00.
writes, "This is everybody's chance who are against this to speak to | :04:00. | :04:03.
their Deputies and let's see how they listen to you." Alexander Cross | :04:03. | :04:07.
says, "You know what, when an island like Guernsey can't keep enough | :04:07. | :04:09.
schools open things are getting pretty dire!" And this one from | :04:09. | :04:15.
Josephine Reeve — "There are plenty of schools in Guernsey! Too many | :04:15. | :04:18.
really, there is so much room for rationalisation." Well, thanks for | :04:18. | :04:24.
those and keep them coming in. In other news today, EasyJet has | :04:24. | :04:27.
been in Guernsey to discuss flying to the island. The airline bought | :04:27. | :04:30.
Flybe's Gatwick slots and is starting up flights from the London | :04:30. | :04:33.
airport to Jersey. They say they've been assessing Guernsey Airport as | :04:33. | :04:36.
part of their on—going consideration of operating flights to the island. | :04:36. | :04:41.
Flybe is axing the Channel Islands to Gatwick routes next March. | :04:41. | :04:46.
A 32—year—old Guernsey man has been given a three year jail sentence for | :04:46. | :04:50.
possession with the intent to supply a class B drug. Daniel Edward Lilley | :04:50. | :04:55.
pleaded guilty to the offences at the Royal Court. Lilley was found | :04:55. | :04:58.
with a total quantity of cannabis resin with a street value of between | :04:58. | :05:02.
£33,000 and £42,000. He was arrested in March. | :05:02. | :05:08.
A new company is planning to launch a freight service between the | :05:08. | :05:11.
Channel Islands and the UK. CI Lines has announced it's launching a | :05:11. | :05:14.
load—on, load—off freight service to replace Huelin Renouf which fell | :05:14. | :05:18.
into administration. CI Lines hopes to use one of the vessels previously | :05:18. | :05:23.
used by Huelin Renouf. Business leaders in Jersey are | :05:23. | :05:26.
calling for a review of immigration controls to allow an influx of more | :05:26. | :05:31.
skilled workers. It comes as The Financial Times publishes a special | :05:31. | :05:36.
report into the island's economy. The five page spread suggests the | :05:37. | :05:40.
key to growth is to encourage different types of business to the | :05:40. | :05:43.
island. Earlier I was joined in the studio by Kevin Keen from the | :05:43. | :05:46.
Institute of Directors which is calling for this review. I asked him | :05:46. | :05:50.
what type of workers he thinks are needed? We want to see the economy | :05:50. | :06:01.
diversify. We want new sectors and editable sector is the one that | :06:01. | :06:05.
everyone is focusing on. We have to allow some new people to come in to | :06:05. | :06:11.
get that sector going. Why can't local people do those jobs and grow | :06:11. | :06:17.
those industries? Most employers, perfect get local people, they would | :06:17. | :06:21.
but then reality is they need new skills. What are the sticking points | :06:22. | :06:36.
in the current system? I think the problem as it risks being hijacked | :06:36. | :06:40.
by election year and white politicians focusing on the topline | :06:40. | :06:44.
number rather than the working population. We have an ageing | :06:44. | :06:48.
population which is part of the reason. We are all living longer | :06:48. | :06:51.
which is great news but it means that there will be less people doing | :06:51. | :06:56.
the work. If we focus on their working population rather than the | :06:56. | :07:00.
topline, that is what we need to look at. Kevin Keen speaking to me | :07:00. | :07:03.
earlier. You're watching the BBC in the | :07:03. | :07:07.
Channel Islands. Later in Spotlight with Justin and Natalie, beef and | :07:08. | :07:10.
gravy replaces raspberry ripple at this ice cream parlour which caters | :07:11. | :07:15.
for dogs. Guernsey FC's FA Cup tie with Dover | :07:15. | :07:19.
Athletic will now take place at Lancing Football Club near Brighton. | :07:19. | :07:22.
The match was due to be played in Guernsey but clashed with a Guernsey | :07:22. | :07:26.
Rugby Club fixture. Kick—off is at three o'clock next Saturday. | :07:26. | :07:30.
Jersey Rugby Club face Bedford at St Peter tomorrow. The island side will | :07:30. | :07:35.
be hoping they can improve on a 41—27 loss against Plymouth Albion | :07:35. | :07:39.
last weekend. The game starts at 3pm tomorrow and there'll be coverage on | :07:39. | :07:44.
BBC Radio Jersey. Real ale enthusiasts have the chance | :07:44. | :07:47.
to try more than 100 different beers and ciders in Jersey this weekend. | :07:47. | :07:51.
The Jersey Beer Festival attracted around 1,000 islanders on its first | :07:51. | :07:55.
day yesterday. Our reporter Amy Harris has been to find out what all | :07:55. | :08:00.
the fuss is about. Where can you find a Top Sy, a Bobby | :08:00. | :08:05.
Dazzler and a Risky Blonde? Well, they're all ales available here at | :08:05. | :08:09.
the Jersey Beer Festival. And hundreds are expected to descend on | :08:09. | :08:12.
this tented bar this weekend, including this lot who popped by for | :08:12. | :08:24.
a lunchtime tipple. I am not really a hero drinker so I have not got to | :08:24. | :08:27.
the point when I will try anything yet but I will later. I like to try | :08:27. | :08:33.
different beers from different parts of the country. Lager is quite | :08:33. | :08:43.
boring. Over 8000 people are expected to turn up this weekend. | :08:44. | :08:47.
Jon le Sueur's one of the organisers. So, Jon, what do you | :08:47. | :08:50.
think draws the crowds, it's not just a pub in a tent, is it? It is | :08:50. | :08:58.
about the choice we offer. The explosion of real ale in the UK has | :08:58. | :09:04.
led to many more brands. The beers we have here you will not see any | :09:04. | :09:10.
local pubs. Pouring the pints this lunchtime, we met Ian Ferguson. He | :09:10. | :09:14.
says despite the exotic incomers, the local brews are going down well | :09:14. | :09:22.
with tourists. They have a different market. Many overseas visitors and | :09:22. | :09:33.
it is holding its own. So whether your tipple is a Fox, a | :09:33. | :09:36.
Skullsplitter or a First Hand, the advice is to get down here early as | :09:36. | :09:40.
the favourites might run out — I might just have a little taste now | :09:40. | :09:50.
then. Could I have a keep calm please? | :09:50. | :10:01.
Let's see if those are real ale drinkers will be sheltering in the | :10:01. | :10:04.
tent or enjoying the sunshine. There will be eight good deal of | :10:04. | :10:32.
cloud around over at the weekend. It is this week and warm front moving | :10:32. | :10:36.
east words that will usher in the low clouds and coastal fog. As we | :10:36. | :10:49.
look towards Sunday at us a similar picture but Monday could turn right. | :10:49. | :10:58.
This evening, as the night wears on eventually we will see an increasing | :10:58. | :11:05.
amount of low cloud from the West. We will find that by tomorrow | :11:05. | :11:08.
morning there could be patchy drizzle about. A dam start to the | :11:08. | :11:21.
day. Tomorrow it is all about how things brighten up, or not as the | :11:21. | :11:28.
case may be. I think we will continue with a lot of Mark. At | :11:28. | :11:37.
least the cloud base shows signs of breaking from time to time to give | :11:37. | :11:47.
way to brighter spells. Temperatures tomorrow, about 18 or 19 Celsius. If | :11:47. | :11:55.
the Sun breaks through it could rise to 20. A picture on Sunday but with | :11:55. | :12:03.
drier air on Monday and Tuesday we will see more Sunday, temperatures | :12:04. | :12:09.
getting up to the low 20s. Join me again at ten 20 5pm | :12:09. | :12:12.
tonight. —— 10:25pm tonight. around 550 serving personnel and | :12:12. | :12:47.
veterans took part in the parade to celebrate the 50th anniversary of | :12:47. | :12:51.
the Naval service been granted the Freedom of the City. | :12:51. | :12:59.
At 1pm sharp, the first round of a 13 gun salute echoed across the | :12:59. | :13:10.
city. The band of her Majesty 's MAC Royal Marines led the parade from | :13:10. | :13:15.
the Royal Citadel. Today's event as a celebration of 50 years since it | :13:15. | :13:21.
was granted the Freedom of the City. It gives them the privilege to march | :13:21. | :13:25.
them with colours flying and bayonets fixed. Back in September | :13:25. | :13:31.
1960 three, 1000 spa so now exercise that right, a little over 50% were | :13:31. | :13:37.
on parade today. The Freedom of the City was given to the Plymouth | :13:37. | :13:41.
command, we are now not Plymouth command, it recognises the changing | :13:41. | :13:46.
shape. You'll notice there are Royal Marines here, it is recognising the | :13:46. | :13:49.
whole of the Naval service. The units marched down Royal Parade | :13:49. | :13:58.
and around Derry's crossed before assembling in Armada Way. | :13:58. | :14:08.
They were inspected by flag officer Ray Admiral Penn key and the Lord | :14:08. | :14:13.
Mayor of Plymouth before the presentation of a silver casket | :14:13. | :14:20.
reaffirming the Freedom of the City. It is an honour for me to accept on | :14:20. | :14:26.
behalf of the officers, sailors and Royal Marines of the Naval service | :14:26. | :14:31.
based here in Plymouth, the freedom of this great city, conferred again | :14:31. | :14:36.
some 50 years after it was originally granted to our forebears. | :14:36. | :14:44.
It is not often that we see such a big parade. They all turned out | :14:44. | :14:50.
looking so smart, just as the Navy would, we are so ploughed of them | :14:50. | :14:55.
here. I have lived here all of my life. Plymouth does it so well. I | :14:55. | :15:00.
think it is a wonderful day for Plymouth. We owe a lot to the Navy | :15:00. | :15:06.
and I think they owe quite a bit to us. The close association between | :15:07. | :15:12.
Plymouth and the Royal Navy has endured for hundreds of years, both | :15:12. | :15:17.
the city and the senior service have seen their share of tough times. | :15:17. | :15:22.
This honour may be ceremonial, it is also being raised as a signal to | :15:22. | :15:26.
those in power at the relationship is still as strong as ever. | :15:26. | :15:31.
There's a very special visitor to Torbay this weekend. HMS Protector | :15:31. | :15:37.
is anchored up and members of the public are being invited out to sea | :15:37. | :15:41.
to have a look around and see what life is like on board. But as John | :15:41. | :15:46.
Ayres explains, this naval ship is not like any other. | :15:46. | :15:50.
You may not recognise it at first glance. She is read because she is a | :15:50. | :15:55.
icebreaker. The colour makes her easily seen. The protector is the | :15:55. | :16:01.
ice patrol vessel. We primarily go to Antarctica, but it could be any | :16:01. | :16:06.
ice. Primarily, Antarctica where we are there to provide a sovereign | :16:06. | :16:10.
presence in the territories. We support the British Antarctic survey | :16:10. | :16:16.
and also conduct of research and survey to improve safety navigation. | :16:16. | :16:21.
She is anchored up here and members of the public are being invited to | :16:21. | :16:27.
go aboard and meet the crew. HMS protector is doing operational sea | :16:27. | :16:31.
training along the south coast and helping with recruiting. The ship is | :16:31. | :16:36.
a different colour and the crew were different kit. —— were different | :16:36. | :16:37.
kit. It is a bit of a change. It is hard | :16:37. | :16:49.
at first, but the community on board is fantastic and everyone is in the | :16:49. | :16:54.
same situation and in the same boat. Everyone helps each other out. In | :16:54. | :17:00.
the galley, preparations are being made a cocktail party for invited | :17:00. | :17:05.
guests. Members of the public will be able to see what goes on for | :17:05. | :17:10.
free, but it is ticket only, available from centre in Torquay. | :17:10. | :17:14.
It will be interesting. Time for the sport now and we go | :17:15. | :17:22.
back to the Tour of Britain and Dave's been at the finish of the | :17:22. | :17:28.
Devon stage at Haytor. The Devon stage was won by Simon | :17:28. | :17:35.
Yates of team Great Britain with Bradley Wiggins just retaining the | :17:35. | :17:40.
overall leadership. From Cornwall and from Devon we will be joined by | :17:40. | :17:49.
Mr Barker and Chris from team Great Britain. How did you get on? I had | :17:49. | :17:56.
an easy day, I didn't feel great and we have been doing a key role, so | :17:56. | :18:00.
Ian Wilkinson was in the break, great farce, he made sure that | :18:00. | :18:05.
everyone knows we're the race. I just wrote the finish. What was the | :18:05. | :18:10.
problem? It was too fast. I track too fast? Were the best domestic | :18:11. | :18:21.
—based team and that is a big achievement for us. Everyone is | :18:21. | :18:30.
enjoying the race. Absolutely. You are with your young son, Chris, what | :18:30. | :18:40.
was its like to day? It was a stage that I was a little apprehensive of. | :18:40. | :18:46.
I went to the stage in Sidmouth and knew what was this stage. I knew | :18:46. | :18:54.
that I looked myself there, I could be a key to the finish. I am more of | :18:54. | :19:01.
a sprinter, so I am looking forward to the weekend where we have flatter | :19:01. | :19:07.
stages. What was the king of the mountain like? We did it in training | :19:07. | :19:13.
not so long ago. It was just as bad then as it was today. It is tough. | :19:13. | :19:18.
It is a long way to the top. It makes you feel a lot hotter than it | :19:18. | :19:26.
really is. There is nothing to cool you down. We wish you the very best | :19:26. | :19:30.
of luck. Thank you for joining us. We'll Yeovil Town become the first | :19:30. | :19:35.
team to beat Queens Park Rangers this season? The championship | :19:35. | :19:39.
leaders visit Somerset with wins under their belt. The Glovers | :19:39. | :19:45.
haven't with a terrific jolt Grant goal. It'll be interesting at St | :19:45. | :19:51.
James's Park next city face Newport County who have also started well. | :19:51. | :19:57.
Plymouth Argyle have a difficult game against Scunthorpe United. | :19:57. | :20:02.
Torquay manager is desperate for his first home win of the season when | :20:02. | :20:05.
Cheltenham town provide the obstacle. | :20:06. | :20:11.
The weekend rugby kicks after night with both the Cornish Pirates and | :20:11. | :20:14.
Plymouth Albion looking to follow up their wins. | :20:14. | :20:19.
Plymouth Albion are favourites to beat Moseley. After getting their | :20:19. | :20:25.
first win of the new season, Exeter Chiefs go to London Irish on | :20:25. | :20:30.
Saturday with wealth —— Welsh international hoping to add to his | :20:30. | :20:33.
tries from last weekend. Finally, you may remember we feature | :20:33. | :20:43.
him recently in training to swim the English Channel for the children's | :20:43. | :20:47.
Hospice, he has been given the green light to go from Dover this Sunday. | :20:48. | :20:51.
The 24—year—old hopes to complete the achievement in 12 hours. We wish | :20:51. | :20:55.
her the best of luck. We certainly do, because she has | :20:55. | :21:00.
tried before, but hopefully everything will go well this time. | :21:00. | :21:06.
Good luck Jazz. What is your favourite flavour of ice cream? When | :21:06. | :21:15.
I was on holiday, I had high Nico ice cream which was very nice. | :21:15. | :21:19.
How about roast chicken with gravy, cheese and dog biscuits and beef and | :21:19. | :21:22.
gravy? No, that's does not appeal to me. —— | :21:22. | :21:29.
that's does. An ice—cream maker in Cornwall has come up with the new | :21:29. | :21:35.
flavours for dogs and as Eleanor Parkinson's been finding out, they | :21:35. | :21:39.
are lapping them up. Mabel tucks into her favourite ice | :21:39. | :21:44.
cream, roast chicken flavour, her owner came up with the idea of | :21:44. | :21:47.
canine ice cream, Mabel can choose between various flavours. The ice | :21:47. | :21:52.
cream is made by Denise's son who learned how to make it in Italy. | :21:52. | :21:56.
We wanted to have ice cream that would be gentle on the dark's | :21:56. | :22:00.
tummies, so we thought we would swap the clotted cream and the rich cream | :22:00. | :22:05.
or yoghurt. From the restaurant, we had gourmet Roast beef and they | :22:05. | :22:11.
always have a stock running of marrow and bones, so we folded that | :22:11. | :22:16.
in between the ice cream. The customers are queueing up, first in | :22:16. | :22:21.
line with this greyhound. The money race from the ice cream system to a | :22:21. | :22:28.
charity which we home stocks. We cannot thank her enough. It is | :22:28. | :22:33.
hugely not also appeals to all dog owners, but it couldn't have come at | :22:33. | :22:40.
a better time for us. It is a perfect day for an ice cream and I | :22:40. | :22:47.
am going to take this type of cheese and biscuits flavour down to the | :22:47. | :22:48.
beach to see what the dogs there think. Does your doglike ice cream? | :22:49. | :22:53.
What about cheese and biscuit ice cream? Baxter is an immediate ban. | :22:53. | :22:59.
This dog is a little wary at first, but then tucks in. | :22:59. | :23:03.
The Labrador, well, he just dives in and it gets a bit messy. Back at the | :23:03. | :23:09.
ice cream parlour, not surprisingly, the biggest fan is | :23:09. | :23:13.
Mabel. With every flavour on tap, it is a dog's life. | :23:13. | :23:19.
Lots of wagging tails there, it seemed to go down well. Let's have a | :23:19. | :23:25.
look and see if it is ice cream weather this weekend? | :23:25. | :23:25.
A lot of dry weather through the course of the weekend. There will be | :23:25. | :23:35.
some drizzle around. It is worth noting that this dry spell of the | :23:35. | :23:42.
nine high pressure is going to last for a number of days to come with | :23:42. | :23:45.
temperatures on the rise, particularly as we get into the | :23:46. | :23:50.
first part of next week. Let's take a look at the wider view as we go | :23:50. | :23:51.
through the into Saturday. Gets a hill fog | :23:51. | :23:59.
conditions and some coastal low cloud and some patchy drizzle, but | :23:59. | :24:04.
you will notice that signal and the latter half of Saturday for things | :24:04. | :24:09.
to brighten up. On Sunday, things will turn back to square one with | :24:09. | :24:13.
extensive low cloud and more particularly across the southwestern | :24:13. | :24:17.
peninsula is. Through the course of this evening, it has been a fine | :24:17. | :24:22.
enough afternoon for many of you, but that of low cloud spreads in. | :24:22. | :24:28.
You will get hill fog even over moderately high ground and some | :24:28. | :24:31.
patchy drizzle here or there. Things continue, it is going to continue | :24:31. | :24:35.
eastwards through the night and by the time we are through .Mac seven P | :24:35. | :24:43.
M —— 7am tomorrow morning. It will see 14 sources for some, a similar | :24:43. | :24:49.
story out in the Isles of Scilly. Double figures I think that the vast | :24:49. | :24:55.
majority, if not all. It will be quite a clammy start, a lot of low | :24:55. | :25:00.
cloud and coastal fog of high —— will hang on. | :25:00. | :25:05.
Some Southern district around Devon, come further around the | :25:05. | :25:10.
western periphery here, we continue with the low cloud and the fog. | :25:10. | :25:16.
Weather it brightens up will be a matter of some doubt. That will be | :25:16. | :25:21.
reflected in the temperatures. Where it does write an app, you could | :25:21. | :25:25.
quite easily be getting up to 20, maybe even 21 Celsius. Conversely, | :25:25. | :25:32.
more like mid—teens for some. That will be when you're stuck under the | :25:32. | :25:37.
dollar conditions. But you should see some fleeting brightness. We | :25:37. | :25:41.
shall see. Looking beyond that, as we go into Sunday, it is a broadly | :25:41. | :25:45.
similar pattern with dry weather. This area of high pressure into | :25:45. | :25:50.
Monday slips a bit further eastwards and interned the winds will be back. | :25:50. | :25:55.
That means drier air starting to feed in from that direction out of | :25:55. | :26:00.
France and interned that will start to lift the cloud. For a fair number | :26:00. | :26:05.
of us, it will be more generally sunny by Monday, compared to the | :26:05. | :26:10.
weekend. He is a summary. —— here is a summary. All other smaller less in | :26:11. | :26:17.
the same boat as we go through the next few days. Notice the | :26:17. | :26:21.
brightening up as we go into next week. I would be surprised if we see | :26:21. | :26:25.
some places with the low 20s. Now a chance to remind you that | :26:25. | :26:32.
we've launched our search for our Unsung Sporting Hero of 2013. Do you | :26:32. | :26:36.
know someone who voluntarily gives up their time to encourage others to | :26:37. | :26:41.
participate in sport? If you do, now is the time to nominate them for the | :26:41. | :26:46.
BBC Sports Unsung Hero Award which is in its tenth year. There are two | :26:46. | :26:51.
ways of nominating — you can either go to our website | :26:51. | :26:52.
bbc.co.uk/unsunghero or you can call 0845 308 8000 to ask for a | :26:52. | :26:58.
nomination form to be posted to you. Calls cost up to 5p/min from most | :26:58. | :27:05.
landlines and calls from mobiles may cost considerably more. Full terms | :27:05. | :27:06.
and conditions for the awards are on the website. | :27:06. | :27:06.
We will leave you tonight with a look back at the parade through | :27:06. | :27:25.
Plymouth and the band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines. Goodnight. | :27:25. | :27:30. |
