Good evening. Welcome to BBC Channel six. On BBC | :00:00. | :00:08.
Good evening. Welcome to BBC Channel Islands. Coming up on tonight's | :00:09. | :00:13.
programme. Taking flight. Flybe pulls out of Jersey and Guernsey | :00:14. | :00:17.
with dozens of job losses. Plus getting creative. Top politicians | :00:18. | :00:19.
discuss getting young people into work. It's about building | :00:20. | :00:27.
relationships. It's about speaking to people who are operating in that | :00:28. | :00:33.
sector. And singing, dancing and a spot of head`shaving for Pudsey! We | :00:34. | :00:38.
join all the fun of Children in Need. | :00:39. | :00:48.
Flybe has announced it's closing its bases in Guernsey and Jersey with | :00:49. | :00:54.
the loss of nearly 50 jobs. It will mean no planes or people will be | :00:55. | :00:58.
based in the islands from March next year. The airline hasn't yet | :00:59. | :01:01.
clarified what impact there will be on flights. Earlier this year they | :01:02. | :01:04.
announced they would stop all flights to Gatwick. Mike Wilkins | :01:05. | :01:08.
reports. Despite Flybe's profits increasing, staff numbers will soon | :01:09. | :01:13.
be falling. Nationally, the company are cutting 500 jobs, nearly 200 of | :01:14. | :01:18.
them are thought to be pilots. Locally, the bases in Guernsey and | :01:19. | :01:22.
Jersey will close at the end of March. 35 jobs will be axed in | :01:23. | :01:25.
Jersey and 12 in Guernsey. Today the Pilots' union said it's | :01:26. | :01:48.
still unclear how island routes will be affected. What I think is that | :01:49. | :01:58.
the islands will be covered. I guess, from Southampton and some of | :01:59. | :02:04.
the other areas that Flybe fly to, there will be services but, quite | :02:05. | :02:10.
what time of day they go, and how frequent, is a matter for the | :02:11. | :02:13.
company. Today there is no news on how routes will be affected by this | :02:14. | :02:16.
latest announcement. But with what's thought to be nearly 200 fewer | :02:17. | :02:19.
pilots, the airline will struggle to service its current schedule. A UK | :02:20. | :02:27.
Cabinet Minister has pledged to look again at LVCR in a bid to get | :02:28. | :02:31.
islanders back into work. Teresa Villiers was speaking at a | :02:32. | :02:34.
conference held in the Channel Islands this week to about youth | :02:35. | :02:36.
unemployment. It's the 21st such meeting of the British Irish Council | :02:37. | :02:40.
but can these high`level talks help tackle the high level of joblessness | :02:41. | :02:43.
among young people in Jersey in Guernsey? Nine political | :02:44. | :02:47.
heavyweights bashing around ideas for two days about getting young | :02:48. | :02:54.
people working. No knock`out result. But a lot of familiar mood music. | :02:55. | :03:03.
The challenges that we face are common across all administrations. | :03:04. | :03:05.
They are certainly different in scale but youth unemployment is | :03:06. | :03:09.
issue for all of us. Cautiously optimistic was that term around the | :03:10. | :03:13.
table today about the economic prospects for the future. But on the | :03:14. | :03:17.
big economic issues where Britain could help the Channel Islands, no | :03:18. | :03:23.
promises. A big employer in the Channel Islands was our fulfilment | :03:24. | :03:27.
industry and your government removed the VAT relief which made it | :03:28. | :03:32.
possible. Guernsey is now trying to restore it. Is your government | :03:33. | :03:38.
perceptive to that? We will consider seriously any proposal put to us, | :03:39. | :03:41.
offering tax advantages, reductions, it's difficult. But I will take on | :03:42. | :03:48.
board what you say, and I suppose it will be public considered by the | :03:49. | :03:53.
Treasury. So no commitment today for young people but talks have been | :03:54. | :03:59.
about jobs for the future in creative industries such as film, | :04:00. | :04:05.
television and digital media. It's about building relationships, | :04:06. | :04:08.
speaking to people who are operating in that sector. We have got our | :04:09. | :04:15.
fibre`optic roll`out, which willing carriage IVT creativity. But it's | :04:16. | :04:19.
also about treating traditional industries and make sure they are | :04:20. | :04:24.
supported and move into the future. This is the 21st meeting of the | :04:25. | :04:29.
British Irish Council. It will take some very creative thinking and | :04:30. | :04:32.
decisive action to put any of the shared ideas into policy and | :04:33. | :04:37.
practice. An inquest into the death of a cyclist has called for better | :04:38. | :04:41.
signage on the road. Paul Channing was killed after coming off his bike | :04:42. | :04:45.
and falling under a car on Beaumont Hill in May. Witnesses told the | :04:46. | :04:48.
hearing he wouldn't have known there was traffic coming up on a bend. The | :04:49. | :04:51.
Deputy Viscount is asking the authorities to look at putting up | :04:52. | :04:57.
warning signs on the road. The new day care centre at Jersey Hospice is | :04:58. | :05:00.
open. The ?2 million building at Clarkson House has a coffee shop, | :05:01. | :05:04.
garden, an arts and crafts area, lounge and treatment rooms. It's | :05:05. | :05:07.
called the King's Centre, as a tribute to to the late Jurat Jean | :05:08. | :05:10.
King, who was a founder of the charity. We have massage therapy. A | :05:11. | :05:22.
hairdresser. What else? Lots of food! Lots of tea and coffee and | :05:23. | :05:30.
lunch! It's wonderful. Now, have you got that Friday feeling? Thousands | :05:31. | :05:36.
of people around our islands who have spent the day putting the fun | :05:37. | :05:40.
into fundraising for Children in Need. We've seen sponsored | :05:41. | :05:41.
leg`waxes, record`breaking hot`dog`eating. Street circus acts | :05:42. | :05:44.
and lots of singing and dancing around with the famous bear. In a | :05:45. | :05:48.
moment, the Jersey highlights, but first Penny Elderfield has a round | :05:49. | :05:53.
up from Guernsey. Not the healthiest start to the day, but a tasty one. | :05:54. | :06:04.
And helping to fill up the bucket for children in need. A bit of a | :06:05. | :06:13.
tradition to come down here and support Children in Need. It's a | :06:14. | :06:17.
great cause. The guys have been here early this morning so it is a quick | :06:18. | :06:20.
break before they go back to work. They always do they rolls down here | :06:21. | :06:24.
for Children in Need, so it's a diversion before work. I've always | :06:25. | :06:31.
supported BBC Children in Need. In the old days, I used to answer the | :06:32. | :06:34.
phones, which was good fun. And fun was really the word of the day. With | :06:35. | :06:42.
schools around the island in party mode. | :06:43. | :06:50.
With Malteser eating competitions. VIP appearances. And some crazy | :06:51. | :07:02.
hairstyles. We crimped it last night and then we backcombed it this | :07:03. | :07:08.
morning and dyed it. Do you like having crazy hair at school? Yes, | :07:09. | :07:15.
it's fun and unusual, too. From crazy hair. To no hair. And some | :07:16. | :07:17.
more painful ways of raising cash. When we got to the back of the legs, | :07:18. | :07:32.
it started hurting so I don't think I will do it again. First and last, | :07:33. | :07:37.
I think. I was in a meeting and I had been put up by eight people | :07:38. | :07:42.
saying, thank you bring much for doing it, and I was not in a | :07:43. | :07:47.
position to say no. So lots of ways of raising, hopefully, a lot of | :07:48. | :07:48.
money for Children in Need. Meanwhile, in Jersey. We're doing a | :07:49. | :08:03.
cake sale, so the children are making cakes all week and we are | :08:04. | :08:06.
ringing the teddy bears for a picnic and we have learned the Pudsey song. | :08:07. | :08:12.
We tried to tell them what Pudsey does to raise money for children not | :08:13. | :08:16.
as fortunate as them, and some children don't have lovely toys to | :08:17. | :08:20.
play with, so they are excited about helping children not as well off as | :08:21. | :08:25.
them. BBC Jersey took over the radio station today, and attempted a hot | :08:26. | :08:31.
dog eating contest. And, not very successfully. The BBC team had a go | :08:32. | :08:42.
at slack lining, with passers`by giving a donation. Local businesses | :08:43. | :08:50.
were busy raising money in their own way. The branch staff have had a | :08:51. | :09:01.
fantastic time organising verse, and really taking part, they have | :09:02. | :09:06.
dressed up as children, and all sorts of guises. They have been | :09:07. | :09:11.
baking cakes to sell to the clients. Donations for a raffle, and we have | :09:12. | :09:15.
had a baby competition in respect of spot the baby in the photos. All day | :09:16. | :09:21.
we have been inviting members to do a onesie work`out and throughout the | :09:22. | :09:26.
day, every hour, we have selected a different challenge. Yes, I have had | :09:27. | :09:36.
to come pleat all of them so far, so that's been pretty tiring but fun, | :09:37. | :09:41.
as well `` complete. A big thank you to everyone who has donated so far. | :09:42. | :09:47.
You really are heroes. Well done to everyone who was given the time and | :09:48. | :09:51.
money for Children in Need. Much more coming up later. Time now for a | :09:52. | :09:53.
look at the weather. Good evening. Whatever you are | :09:54. | :10:01.
doing, I think the weather will be relatively kind across the island. | :10:02. | :10:07.
There is a chance of a fairly low temperature overnight tonight. The | :10:08. | :10:12.
wind will fall light and the temperatures will be well into | :10:13. | :10:15.
single figures, but it gives us a reasonable day tomorrow. Fine and | :10:16. | :10:19.
dry and cloudy at times. Briefly some sunshine in the middle of the | :10:20. | :10:23.
day. Some cloud floating past in the last couple of hours, but, for the | :10:24. | :10:28.
most part, enough clear sky tonight to get the temperature is fairly | :10:29. | :10:32.
low. High pressure in charge, not changing through the weekend. This | :10:33. | :10:36.
weather system will bring rain but not until Monday before it gets to | :10:37. | :10:41.
us. It's across the Midlands on Sunday, and then slowly sinking | :10:42. | :10:45.
southwards during Sunday night and Monday. Overnight tonight, we have a | :10:46. | :10:48.
rift north`easterly breeze which will have the temperatures | :10:49. | :10:55.
plummeting to 5`6. Easterly wind tomorrow. Fairly light. A lot of | :10:56. | :11:02.
cloud. Briefly in the day, sunny spells but it won't last. A lighter | :11:03. | :11:09.
wind than recently. 11 degrees, the maximum temperature. There is the | :11:10. | :11:18.
coastal waters forecast. Times of high water. | :11:19. | :11:30.
Now let's look further ahead because there is a big change coming our way | :11:31. | :11:36.
as we move into next week. Sunday, rather cloudy and a similar weather | :11:37. | :11:39.
pattern. Monday, cloudy without rakes of rain much later in the day | :11:40. | :11:45.
and then showers developing on Tuesday. And from Tuesday, very much | :11:46. | :11:51.
colder air arriving and we could see that a frost developing on Tuesday | :11:52. | :11:55.
and Wednesday. Have a nice weekend. That's it from the BBC in the | :11:56. | :11:59.
Channel Islands. Time to join our Spotlight colleagues for their | :12:00. | :12:05.
Children in Need special. . Here's James and Rebecca. | :12:06. | :12:16.
studio tonight. It is time to start the count down to this evening's | :12:17. | :12:22.
fundraising Party For Pudsey. Rebecca Will is in Falmouth along | :12:23. | :12:25.
with BBC Radio Cornwall's James Churchfield. | :12:26. | :12:30.
Welcome to the National Maritime Museum borrower Party For Pudsey. So | :12:31. | :12:32.
many people gathered for this wonderful occasion. The party has | :12:33. | :12:39.
already started. There are hundreds of people with us. Let us give you a | :12:40. | :12:44.
quick tour of what will be your home for the next few hours. Pudsey is | :12:45. | :12:49.
already making himself at home. You can see some of the people that have | :12:50. | :12:53.
come along to the party. Ie looking forward to it? `` are you looking | :12:54. | :13:07.
forward to it? ALL: Yes! We have our fundraisers here. People | :13:08. | :13:11.
who have been doing amazing things. We will hear from some of them a | :13:12. | :13:16.
little bit later on. And we have very amazing Children In Need | :13:17. | :13:22.
choir. 200 voices will be joining with over 1500 other singers in the | :13:23. | :13:26.
main Children In Need programmes singing a very special song. We have | :13:27. | :13:31.
heard it in rehearsal this afternoon. We will have a taster, | :13:32. | :13:37.
you will not want to miss it. You have been filling out all of the | :13:38. | :13:40.
stops fundraising right across the region. Some wonderful and wacky | :13:41. | :13:46.
things have been happening. Let us find out what you have been doing | :13:47. | :13:54.
across the South West. It is fortunate that we have Children In | :13:55. | :13:58.
Need day today, so I can wear my usual attire! | :13:59. | :14:13.
I cannot quite believe I am doing this. This is crazy! # Everybody's | :14:14. | :14:53.
got a dream. # What do you say, are we making history? # We are only | :14:54. | :15:02.
young is we seize the night. # Tonight we own the night. # Tonight | :15:03. | :15:17.
we own the night. Writes now she is raising money by | :15:18. | :15:18.
being a goalkeeper for charity. # I got something to say. | :15:19. | :15:43.
# May your hearts be full of your dreams tonight. | :15:44. | :15:51.
# May we sing and dance tiil we lose our minds. | :15:52. | :16:02.
# We are only young if we seize the night, tonight we own the night. | :16:03. | :16:16.
It's all four a good cause, isn't it! | :16:17. | :16:25.
Every year we are astounded by the links that you go to to raise money | :16:26. | :16:29.
for children in need. To everyone, we give you a very hearty thank you. | :16:30. | :16:33.
If you have raised money, if you have given money. It really will | :16:34. | :16:37.
make a difference to the lives of children here in the South West. | :16:38. | :16:45.
None more so than the call. She uses a children's hospice in the region. | :16:46. | :16:53.
Her mum tells us the story. Nicole is born `` Nicole was born as | :16:54. | :17:07.
a normal child, but then we discovered she had a rear syndrome. | :17:08. | :17:14.
She is just Nicole. She just does not speak. The most often question I | :17:15. | :17:20.
get is, how do you know when she is annoyed? You just know. She does not | :17:21. | :17:25.
really display pane, she does not smile, but we just embrace her. | :17:26. | :17:33.
She's our little girl and we all love her. All of the children love | :17:34. | :17:39.
her. People do not realise that nobody else can look after these | :17:40. | :17:43.
children. They have got such specific needs. Everything has to be | :17:44. | :17:48.
done right, there is no room for errors. This is what these places | :17:49. | :17:53.
are for. There is nobody else they are out of ours who you can phone to | :17:54. | :18:00.
say, I am in a mess. Can you help? Of course we can help. The children | :18:01. | :18:05.
think it is a big holiday once they get here. The sibling team are | :18:06. | :18:09.
brilliant. You cannot ask for a better people. She is treated as a | :18:10. | :18:15.
normal person here. None of the children staying at her, and it is | :18:16. | :18:19.
nice to see the siblings all playing together. And they are all relaxed. | :18:20. | :18:26.
They are all happy. But ultimately you know that it is not going to | :18:27. | :18:36.
have a happy ending. So we now know we can come here with her child when | :18:37. | :18:41.
that happens. When that happens, we can come here, spend our last time | :18:42. | :18:46.
together in a place that is happy and with the sibling team, most | :18:47. | :18:51.
importantly, that can support the call's siblings, because they are | :18:52. | :18:55.
the most important. `` Nicole's siblings. Getting them to deal with | :18:56. | :19:00.
what is going to happen. That reason alone is why these places should be | :19:01. | :19:09.
here. I think they are amazing places because when you come in you | :19:10. | :19:14.
do not know that any of that is there, you do not know that sad is | :19:15. | :19:20.
happening here. People always say, can we help you? This is how you can | :19:21. | :19:25.
help us. You can donate. That is how you can help. That is the difference | :19:26. | :19:34.
your fundraising makes for Children In Need, helping people like | :19:35. | :19:38.
Nicole's family, making a real difference to their lives. We have | :19:39. | :19:44.
some checks here, plenty of people out and about. Where are you from | :19:45. | :19:50.
and what have you done? We are dressed up in Wix, `` in wigs and | :19:51. | :20:07.
Wellington boots. ?868.11. How did you read that? We had peak sales, | :20:08. | :20:17.
face painting. We also had the staff in stocks. I bet that was fun! This | :20:18. | :20:33.
is 1500 p from B and Q in Cornwall. We have had raffles, cake sales, all | :20:34. | :20:45.
of the staff in fancy dress. You get depressed Pudsey's stomach. Nothing | :20:46. | :20:55.
has happened! Never mind. Well done to everybody, fabulous effort for | :20:56. | :21:00.
fundraising for Children In Need. I'm here with very amazing | :21:01. | :21:03.
children's choir. You looking forward to your singing this | :21:04. | :21:11.
evening? I probably better not get them to scream to lately because | :21:12. | :21:14.
they will lose their voices. Is this your first time saying with a big | :21:15. | :21:20.
choir like this? It is one of my first time is doing this live on TV. | :21:21. | :21:26.
How much preparation has there been? There have been a lot of | :21:27. | :21:29.
rehearsals today, it has been quite tough. But it is all for a good | :21:30. | :21:37.
cause. What is it been due to be taking part? It is a really good | :21:38. | :21:42.
cause and I am so pleased to be supporting it. I am so glad that it | :21:43. | :21:48.
is going to be on TV. Last year it was the third highest point that | :21:49. | :21:53.
people paid money out. You will really make a difference, I am sure. | :21:54. | :22:02.
How does it make you feel to be here with so many young people? It makes | :22:03. | :22:05.
me really happy that we may be helping lots of people. Did you have | :22:06. | :22:12.
to be coerced into taking part, as a boy? I really wanted to do it, | :22:13. | :22:21.
because I love singing. What does it mean to you to take part? It means a | :22:22. | :22:25.
lot to me, because I am really excited. It really is something very | :22:26. | :22:31.
special. Make sure you join us for that. Now back to the studio to take | :22:32. | :22:34.
a look at the weather. I did make a promise to Pudsey that | :22:35. | :22:52.
I would start with Barmouth. `` Falmouth. Although we have a cover | :22:53. | :22:58.
of cloud now, by midnight or just after we're going to get | :22:59. | :23:00.
temperatures fairly close to freezing. For the next few days we | :23:01. | :23:05.
have a fairly quiet spell of weather, it is mainly dry. Some | :23:06. | :23:09.
frost and fog around and then turning very much colder next week. | :23:10. | :23:13.
Quite a big change for those drops in temperatures. There is the | :23:14. | :23:17.
satellite picture from earlier today. That cloud will thin and | :23:18. | :23:24.
break earlier today. `` later on. For much of the weekend, we do have | :23:25. | :23:29.
a weather system that comes in from the north`west, but that would be a | :23:30. | :23:33.
slow progress towards us. Not really arriving until probably overnight | :23:34. | :23:40.
and into Monday. He wrote the details. A lot of clear sky to the | :23:41. | :23:47.
