The headlines: An historic day for goodbye | :00:30. | :00:34.
The headlines: An historic day for Guernsey ` the island moves a step | :00:35. | :00:37.
closer to improving rights for its disabled people. It's a first step. | :00:38. | :00:41.
The flats once described as hell. Residents return after ?4 million of | :00:42. | :00:44.
investment. And why switching on Guernsey's Tree of Joy is a special | :00:45. | :00:56.
moment for seven`year`old Jake. Guernsey has moved a step closer to | :00:57. | :00:59.
equal rights for disabled people. Today deputies voted unanimously in | :01:00. | :01:02.
favour of adopting a Disability and Inclusion Strategy. Hundreds of | :01:03. | :01:05.
people gathered outside the States to show their support, as Mike | :01:06. | :01:08.
Wilkins reports. Cheers and smiles this morning from | :01:09. | :01:12.
people determined to make sure their voices are heard. I suffer with the | :01:13. | :01:20.
hidden disability which is not necessarily seen by people. I feel | :01:21. | :01:28.
people should be more aware of people in the same predicament as | :01:29. | :01:31.
myself. It is an overwhelming turnout. I want to be in support of | :01:32. | :01:43.
this. I really do think it matters. Behind me and all around me you can | :01:44. | :01:46.
see the strength for the strategy but it is still up to the people | :01:47. | :01:50.
inside the chamber 's to determine the ultimate outcome. | :01:51. | :01:56.
Under the strategy: New anti`discrimintion laws will be | :01:57. | :01:59.
drafted. Employment opportunities and accessibility will be examined. | :02:00. | :02:02.
More and better information will be made available for disabled | :02:03. | :02:03.
islanders, carers and employers. made available for disabled | :02:04. | :02:04.
islanders, carers and employers And made available for disabled | :02:05. | :02:04.
islanders, carers and employers. And islanders, carers and employers. And | :02:05. | :02:07.
the Island will sign up to the UN Convention on Rights for Disabled | :02:08. | :02:11.
People. Today is the first step on a long journey. There are still some | :02:12. | :02:18.
parts to be addressed. But it is a first step, let's start. I call it | :02:19. | :02:22.
these camp on my Everest and we are at base camp. But some still feel | :02:23. | :02:31.
the States will need to deliver on its promise. | :02:32. | :02:36.
The important aspect is to make sure this strategy is resourced. And that | :02:37. | :02:49.
other areas are also resourced. When 14,000 islanders are disabled, this | :02:50. | :02:52.
new strategy has the potential to help many people. | :02:53. | :02:54.
The challenge now is to keep the momentum going to ensure it passes | :02:55. | :03:04.
swiftly into law. It was once one of Jersey's most run down tower blocks, | :03:05. | :03:07.
now tenants are returning to La Colette flats after a ?4 million | :03:08. | :03:10.
refurbishment. Some described living in the old damp flats as hell, so | :03:11. | :03:14.
how have they reacted to their new homes? Tim Robinson went to find | :03:15. | :03:19.
out. Come on in. This is La Collette a | :03:20. | :03:24.
year ago. We met Paul Davey, who said living in this damp flat with | :03:25. | :03:31.
his family, was hell. This is where it was supposed to be fixed before. | :03:32. | :03:37.
The damp issue for me, is a big concern, mainly because of my | :03:38. | :03:40.
daughter, and the amount of times we've taken her to hospital, and | :03:41. | :03:44.
they've had to put her on steroids, because of her asthma, and this damp | :03:45. | :03:48.
is not helping ` now the weather's turning again. We really shouldn't | :03:49. | :03:51.
be here. The housing department has spent ?4 million renovating this | :03:52. | :03:54.
listed tower block, in an effort to make stories like that a thing of | :03:55. | :03:57.
the past. The walls were peeling a lot. Here everything has been sorted | :03:58. | :04:07.
now. One resident Frances Young was proud to show off her new flat. | :04:08. | :04:14.
Everybody had areas in their apartments that needed seeing to and | :04:15. | :04:18.
it was quite damp especially in this area. It is a complete | :04:19. | :04:28.
refurbishment. There are many more tenants still desperate to get out | :04:29. | :04:34.
of damp homes. Amy Ware's baby has to sleep in the lounge, next to | :04:35. | :04:38.
walls that are mouldy and cold. She says she's tried everything to get | :04:39. | :04:41.
her family moved. I do not know where else to turn. I have spoken to | :04:42. | :04:44.
the Minister and everybody. I have got so many agencies involved in | :04:45. | :04:48.
lawyers, I do not know where to go now. It is heartbreaking. The | :04:49. | :04:53.
housing department wants to borrow ?250 million to renovate or replace | :04:54. | :04:56.
of hundreds more homes like Amy s. The States will vote whether to | :04:57. | :05:00.
allow that loan to happen in next weeks' budget. Tenants like Amy will | :05:01. | :05:07.
be watching that closely. Patients at Guernsey's Princess | :05:08. | :05:10.
Elizabeth Hospital could soon be banned from smoking anywhere on the | :05:11. | :05:11.
hospital grounds. At the moment, hospital grounds. At the moment | :05:12. | :05:14.
smokers can use designated shelters outside the building, but the health | :05:15. | :05:17.
department are working on a policy to protect staff and patients. | :05:18. | :05:20.
Similar plans are being considered in England. It's emerged that a | :05:21. | :05:27.
Jersey lawyer has appeared before the Magistrates Court charged with | :05:28. | :05:29.
assaulting a woman. Five days ago, Advocate Philip Sinel | :05:30. | :05:32.
was accused of grave and criminal assault dating back to 2006. His | :05:33. | :05:36.
case will be heard again in two weeks' time. | :05:37. | :05:40.
The top prize in this year's Channel Islands Christmas Lottery has | :05:41. | :05:42.
already passed last year's jackpot total. It's now worth ?695,000 with | :05:43. | :05:46.
more than three weeks to go before the draw. | :05:47. | :05:56.
Almost ?750,000 of taxpayer's money is being earmarked to try to keep | :05:57. | :05:59.
the world's largest hoard of Celtic coins in Jersey. They were | :06:00. | :06:02.
discovered by metal detector enthusiasts last year. The money's | :06:03. | :06:05.
been put aside to restore the treasure so it can go on display ` | :06:06. | :06:09.
and there's also a plan to reward the finders. Pam Caulfield reports. | :06:10. | :06:15.
70,000 coins ` one of the biggest hoards in the world. Discovered | :06:16. | :06:18.
right here in Jersey. And that's where the States wants it to stay. | :06:19. | :06:22.
It may never have been unearthed if it wasn't for this man and his | :06:23. | :06:30.
friend. It has been a pleasure in being part of finding the most | :06:31. | :06:34.
amazing board of iron age equipment ever. Of course we have to speak | :06:35. | :06:41.
about money later on. But for the moment, let's enjoy what we have got | :06:42. | :06:47.
and make the most of it. And to allow Jersey Heritage to restore and | :06:48. | :06:50.
display it ` the Treasury's set aside ?750,000 of taxpayer's money. | :06:51. | :06:56.
It should be properly looked after, properly unpicked by the Jersey | :06:57. | :07:02.
Heritage trust and we should get the maximum interpretation of what is an | :07:03. | :07:07.
exciting part of our history. There was an unexpected item and that was | :07:08. | :07:10.
why we have made a decision to withdraw it from the condition `` | :07:11. | :07:18.
contingencies. But its true value won't be known | :07:19. | :07:21.
until the coins are separated. Despite the Crown being the official | :07:22. | :07:25.
owners, there are promises to reward the finders of this great discovery. | :07:26. | :07:36.
You're watching the BBC on the Channel Islands. But its true value | :07:37. | :07:42.
won't be known until the coins are separated. Most people take to | :07:43. | :07:51.
crafts as they get older, find out why this lady has gone for a tattoo | :07:52. | :07:53.
instead. As we head towards December it's | :07:54. | :07:56.
almost time for the big Christmas lights switch`ons. Tomorrow, the | :07:57. | :08:00.
Tree of Joy will be turned on in Guernsey and every year a different | :08:01. | :08:03.
child is picked to do it. This year it's Jake Guy, a seven year old with | :08:04. | :08:07.
a life`limiting heart condition. Penny Elderfield went to meet him. | :08:08. | :08:10.
It was your first Christmas. The day before your surgery. Looking through | :08:11. | :08:17.
their old photos, for for Holly and Jake it's a reminder of just how | :08:18. | :08:20.
much he's been through over the years. | :08:21. | :08:22.
Now seven, he's already had several major heart operations and relies | :08:23. | :08:28.
100% on a pace`maker. And this year's been particularly tough. Very | :08:29. | :08:36.
hard. He was very unwell for six weeks. He had a line that went in | :08:37. | :08:43.
there and went to his heart. For him to have blood tests every two hours | :08:44. | :08:49.
was hard for him. You were very brave? You had a hard time in | :08:50. | :08:55.
hospital? Harder than you thought it would be? And on the news because he | :08:56. | :09:06.
was excited to tell me, he is turning on the lights on Guernsey's | :09:07. | :09:11.
tree of joy. What do you think it will be when you have turned the | :09:12. | :09:18.
lights on? Celebrity! And he will be the star of the show when his family | :09:19. | :09:21.
and friends come to watch and turn on the lights of the tree of joy. It | :09:22. | :09:33.
is all about guests for children. `` presents. You pick up a tag with a | :09:34. | :09:40.
child's name on it, you buy a present and you wrap it. It has to | :09:41. | :09:45.
be done by the 10th of December. For Jake, the important date is tomorrow | :09:46. | :09:50.
when he will get to do something he is very excited about. | :09:51. | :09:53.
Good luck to Jake. David has the weather forecast. What will it be | :09:54. | :10:02.
like for the switch on? It is not overly cold, temperatures have risen | :10:03. | :10:08.
a little bit. It is a little bit of a boring story to tell. Cloudy | :10:09. | :10:17.
tonight and cloudy tomorrow. At the moment the cloud is quite thick and | :10:18. | :10:21.
it is thick enough to produce some spit of light rain and drizzle. | :10:22. | :10:25.
First thing tomorrow there could be some mist around. Tomorrow it is a | :10:26. | :10:31.
cloudy day, there is little changed in that picture throughout the day. | :10:32. | :10:34.
We have a weather front that has come in from the North. The weather | :10:35. | :10:39.
pressure has weakened, there is cloud wrapped around it at the | :10:40. | :10:43.
moment. We will keep an eye on that of the next 24 hours. One weather | :10:44. | :10:48.
system that has moved on as rotten cold air. That cloud will be | :10:49. | :10:55.
sovereign through the day. `` has brought in. Note the wind direction | :10:56. | :11:02.
on Friday, it is a north`westerly direction. We will see light showers | :11:03. | :11:08.
which are quite isolated and fresh conditions. It should improve | :11:09. | :11:11.
visibility and get rid of this cloud and drizzle and mist. We keep it | :11:12. | :11:17.
grey and misty tomorrow morning. Overnight temperatures down as low | :11:18. | :11:22.
as seven degrees. Very light winds saw nothing to stir the error. | :11:23. | :11:25.
Tomorrow we have some spots of drizzle in the morning. `` stir the | :11:26. | :11:35.
error. `` the air. Temperatures getting up to 10 degrees, 50 in | :11:36. | :11:42.
Fahrenheit. Winds are variable throughout the morning then becoming | :11:43. | :11:45.
a northerly breeze. For though coastal waters forecast... | :11:46. | :11:51.
There is not a great deal for our servers. Here is the outlook, it | :11:52. | :12:07.
gets better as we head towards the weekend. 11 degrees, the top | :12:08. | :12:14.
temperature. And nice day on Saturday and then more cloud on | :12:15. | :12:16.
Sunday in the high`pressure comes back. That is it for me. The | :12:17. | :12:24.
headlines come on at eight o'clock. We go back to Justin and | :12:25. | :12:26.
play`off final win over Brentford at Wembley, has been placed on the | :12:27. | :19:00.
transfer`list. The 23`year`old Dubliner has failed to find the | :19:01. | :19:03.
target this season, with the Glovers struggling at the bottom of the | :19:04. | :19:05.
Championship standings. Wembley, has been placed | :19:06. | :19:07.
It was honours even in the 37th Devon derby between Torquay United | :19:08. | :19:10.
and Plymouth Argyle at Plainmoor last night. In a frantic opening, | :19:11. | :19:13.
United took the lead through Elliot Benyon despite Luke McCormick's | :19:14. | :19:16.
initial save. Soon after, Luke Young's free`kick was handled by | :19:17. | :19:19.
Nathan Craig in the penalty area and the resulting spot`kick was | :19:20. | :19:22.
converted by Reuben Reid for a one`all draw. Alan Gow also earned | :19:23. | :19:25.
Exeter City a 1`1 draw at Wycombe Wanderers with a late equaliser. | :19:26. | :19:33.
Now many of you will have been to a remembrance service earlier this | :19:34. | :19:36.
month and next year the day will hold even more significance. It'll | :19:37. | :19:41.
be the centenary of the Great War and one woman in Devon is hoping to | :19:42. | :19:44.
mark it in an unusual way. Yes, Cathy McAnespie runs a clock shop in | :19:45. | :19:48.
Exeter and wants to create the largest online archive of watches, | :19:49. | :19:51.
clocks and other timepieces associated with the war. Spotlight's | :19:52. | :19:59.
Andrea Ormsby has been to meet her. Time ticks loudly. She is passionate | :20:00. | :20:12.
about timepieces. A lot of it is working on older items which are | :20:13. | :20:25.
loved by their owners. She runs a watch repair and | :20:26. | :20:33.
restoration shop. She has another passion. Remembering those who | :20:34. | :20:42.
fought and died in the war. A lot of it stems from the experiences of my | :20:43. | :20:47.
grandfather. He was a prisoner of war. It is important to cherish | :20:48. | :20:54.
these memories and what they did for us. | :20:55. | :21:02.
When she found her grandfather's wartime watch an idea was formed. | :21:03. | :21:21.
This is to protect the glass. It is lovely, the fact it is still | :21:22. | :21:26.
running. I know what my grandfather went through and many like him. She | :21:27. | :21:39.
has set up an online archive for watchers associated with the war. `` | :21:40. | :21:47.
for timepieces associated with the war. | :21:48. | :21:57.
It was nice linking time with time for remembrance. | :21:58. | :22:04.
She hopes people will get in touch to share their stories in the run`up | :22:05. | :22:13.
to the centenary next year. Tattoos used to be the preserve of | :22:14. | :22:17.
ancient mariners but now they have become the ultimate in body fashion | :22:18. | :22:20.
accessories. BBC broadcaster David Dimbleby recently revealed that he'd | :22:21. | :22:24.
had one done at the age of 75. Well now a great grandmother from | :22:25. | :22:27.
Cornwall has topped that by getting her first tattoo in her 80s. Renee | :22:28. | :22:31.
Parker from Saltash is proof that you're only as old as you feel. | :22:32. | :22:34.
Spotlight's John Danks has been to meet her. | :22:35. | :22:50.
I and 84 and I had my first tattoo in April. A relative had one. I | :22:51. | :23:12.
thought it was a good idea. She says she has got to a stage where she | :23:13. | :23:26.
does not care what people think. There is not a lot of flesh on your | :23:27. | :23:37.
foot. What do the people of Saltash think | :23:38. | :23:45.
about it? If she wants one by not. If it makes it happy it is up to | :23:46. | :23:54.
her. I would not want that are to add my age. I just sit and look at | :23:55. | :24:18.
it. Seize the day. I like the tattoos you can wash | :24:19. | :24:28.
off. We have some quiet weather for the | :24:29. | :24:41.
next 24 hours. It is a cloudy day. It will not feel as cold as it has | :24:42. | :24:49.
felt over the last two days. There are a couple of weather fronts that | :24:50. | :24:54.
are keeping things cloudy. Then we have a definite change to writer and | :24:55. | :24:59.
easier conditions as we head to Friday. And breezy day on Friday. | :25:00. | :25:12.
The risk of a few showers. A lot of cloud as you can see from earlier | :25:13. | :25:18.
today. Staying cloudy overnight. This was earlier today. Lovely shots | :25:19. | :25:24.
of the Cornish coastline. The quiet conditions continue | :25:25. | :25:44.
overnight and through the day tomorrow. We will see some mist | :25:45. | :25:52.
forming here and there. Very light winds tonight and tomorrow. Tomorrow | :25:53. | :26:09.
will be a cloudy day will stop. For our surfers it has been | :26:10. | :26:32.
disappointing this week. Becoming quite windy as we move into | :26:33. | :27:18.
Friday. You as the Outlook. Friday a few showers. It is cooler as we head | :27:19. | :27:26.
into the weekend. High pressure coming back for the weekend. | :27:27. | :27:36.
That debate with the Chief con the and the police commissioner is about | :27:37. | :27:41.
to get underway. We will have a live update at ten to 85. `` chief cold | :27:42. | :27:45.
to. | :27:46. | :27:46. |
