Good evening. Come on up: Bus passenger numbers in Guernsey fall | :00:07. | :00:14.
for the fourth year in a row ` now the whole service is under review: I | :00:15. | :00:24.
would like to see some on those affairs, but until we have gone to | :00:25. | :00:27.
the state it is difficult. Plus ` we take a look round the new | :00:28. | :00:31.
cancer unit treating Channel Islands teenagers. | :00:32. | :00:34.
And 100 years on the High Street ` we find out the secret to this | :00:35. | :00:48.
Jersey jeweller's longevity. Bus use in Guernsey is down nearly | :00:49. | :00:52.
10% this year compared to 2012. It's the fourth year in a row that | :00:53. | :00:55.
passenger figures have declined. It's a trend which started when bus | :00:56. | :00:58.
fares went up, as Mike Wilkins reports. | :00:59. | :01:08.
Empty buses. And not even that many people waiting. Reflective of the | :01:09. | :01:12.
latest passenger figures ` which show a big decline in recent years. | :01:13. | :01:18.
Compared to 2012 there's been a drop of 9%, with 1,269,706 bus journeys | :01:19. | :01:21.
more than 1.25 million bus journeys so far this year. That's 241,250 | :01:22. | :01:28.
fewer than fout years ago But that's when prices went up from 60 pence to | :01:29. | :01:32.
a pound, and bus use started to come down. In 2010 they went up. Figures | :01:33. | :01:44.
have drop down since then. If you put fares of, passenger numbers | :01:45. | :01:48.
job. I would like to see some movement on those affairs, but until | :01:49. | :01:51.
we have gone to the state it is difficult. Environment is looking at | :01:52. | :01:56.
whether it would be viable to reduce fares, or even introduce a free bus | :01:57. | :02:00.
service. But what do the bus users think could get more people on | :02:01. | :02:06.
board? Punctuality and rival to you. Make sure you have enough drivers do | :02:07. | :02:11.
the job, and make sure your boss is a service without breaking down. | :02:12. | :02:17.
These are very basic stuff. Then the next stage would be things like bus | :02:18. | :02:21.
shelters. Don't that the present standing around waiting for the bus. | :02:22. | :02:27.
This is also very basic stuff. The entire bus service is under review. | :02:28. | :02:31.
But the reality is that running something that's affordable, and | :02:32. | :02:34.
meets the needs of everyone, will always be a challenge. | :02:35. | :02:41.
The bus operator CT plus has sent us a statement. They say that "A debate | :02:42. | :02:44.
about what is needed for Guernsey residents will help focus on what is | :02:45. | :02:46.
important to people... The trial of a man accused of | :02:47. | :03:04.
murdering a young Guernsey woman in India has been adjourned. Sarah | :03:05. | :03:07.
Groves was stabbed to death in April whilst staying on this houseboat in | :03:08. | :03:10.
Kashmir. A Dutchman, Richard De Wit denies murdering her. The court | :03:11. | :03:13.
convened this morning but was told the witness, one of the sons of the | :03:14. | :03:17.
houseboat owner, was ill, and could not attend. The trial is due to | :03:18. | :03:20.
resume next month. Money raised in Guernsey and Jersey | :03:21. | :03:24.
has led to the opening today of a brand new teenage cancer unit at | :03:25. | :03:26.
Southampton Hospital. Until now Channel Island teenagers with cancer | :03:27. | :03:30.
had to share adult wards, often with very elderly patients. From today | :03:31. | :03:33.
they'll have their own unit, thanks in part to donations totalling | :03:34. | :03:35.
almost ?900,000 from islanders. Tim Robinson reports. | :03:36. | :03:40.
This is where Channel Island teenagers with cancer will be | :03:41. | :03:43.
treated from now on. Southampton's new cancer unit, designed by | :03:44. | :03:46.
teenagers for teenagers ` is fit for royalty ` in stark contrast to what | :03:47. | :03:54.
faced young cancer patients before. It is a huge leap from the wrist | :03:55. | :03:57.
facility it is replacing. Calvin Haycock from Jersey was treated for | :03:58. | :04:00.
Leukemia in Southampton when he was 14 ` and had to share a ward with | :04:01. | :04:04.
much younger children. There was a lot of babies that were being | :04:05. | :04:08.
treated, and you know it just it makes you feel really out of place | :04:09. | :04:12.
and there's noone there even your own age to just talk to, or not | :04:13. | :04:15.
anything suitable for you to interact with. It's all just child's | :04:16. | :04:19.
toys and teddies and it just doesnt really suit for somebody my age. | :04:20. | :04:27.
And, if like Calvin, you have to stay in Southampton for 48 weeks of | :04:28. | :04:30.
painful treatment in a year, being in the right place makes a big | :04:31. | :04:33.
difference. He helped raise money for the unit, and has seen its | :04:34. | :04:37.
impact first hand. It's just so much better, it's just incomparable, it's | :04:38. | :04:40.
really colourful, its modern, there's actual beds in your room so | :04:41. | :04:43.
your friends can stay overnight, and I think that's one of the the bits I | :04:44. | :04:47.
missed most, because I had to go away. It's so hard not having your | :04:48. | :04:54.
mates there. A third of the cost of the unit was raised in the Channel | :04:55. | :04:57.
Islands. And charities say people should be proud of their | :04:58. | :05:01.
contribution. We've raised ?880,000, which has gone towards just purely | :05:02. | :05:05.
driven to make sure this unit is up and running, and without the people | :05:06. | :05:08.
of Jersey, we wouldn't have been able to do this. They've been so | :05:09. | :05:11.
generous, and we would like to personally thank them for all their | :05:12. | :05:15.
contributions and to keep going as well. Because units like this are | :05:16. | :05:19.
not cheap ` it will cost over ?1000 a day to run. But that money will | :05:20. | :05:23.
help these youngsters keep smiling through their treatment. | :05:24. | :05:28.
You're watching the BBC in the Channel Islands. Later in Spotlight | :05:29. | :05:33.
with Justin and Natalie. Fancy a pint with your book? The | :05:34. | :05:41.
pubs turning into libraries. With many local shops struggling | :05:42. | :05:44.
against the larger UK franchises and online stores, it may be surprising | :05:45. | :05:47.
to hear a Jersey jewellers is celebrating it's 100th birthday | :05:48. | :05:51.
today. Letto's was launched in 1913 and is still trading on the same | :05:52. | :05:55.
street by the same family. Emma Chambers reports. | :05:56. | :06:00.
Celebrating 100 years today. This shop in St Helier is one of the few | :06:01. | :06:04.
family run jewellers still left in Jersey. Keen watchmaker Henry Letto | :06:05. | :06:09.
opened the business in 1913 and while so much has changed along this | :06:10. | :06:20.
street his family has kept it going. I started here in 1945. I broke up | :06:21. | :06:33.
the summer holidays and I said I'm not going back to school. The | :06:34. | :06:36.
business has gone from one Letto generation to the next. Today Kath's | :06:37. | :06:40.
Nephew ` Henry's grandson ` runs the shop. It is all change, it is bigger | :06:41. | :06:48.
stores and developments, which I suppose is for the best. There is | :06:49. | :06:53.
still room for small and personal businesses like ours, family run, | :06:54. | :06:57.
and local people love that. It's thought there are only three of | :06:58. | :07:00.
these family run jewellers still trading. An achievement Kath says | :07:01. | :07:08.
her father would be proud of. He would be on top of the world. We | :07:09. | :07:12.
would have a party for our 50th anniversary, and that was for the | :07:13. | :07:21.
staff, and it was lovely to see him. He was so proud to think he had | :07:22. | :07:26.
done it. Not only has this shop been owned by various generations ` but | :07:27. | :07:30.
it's also served many and hopes to continue in the future. | :07:31. | :07:37.
With Christmas soon upon us, this week, we're featuring festive songs | :07:38. | :07:40.
and carols performed by choirs from around the Channel Islands. | :07:41. | :07:45.
Tonight's is Slade's Merry Xmas Everybody performed by Jersey's | :07:46. | :07:48.
Parklife choir, which was set up to help people with alcohol and drug | :07:49. | :07:49.
dependencies. so here it is Merry Christmas, | :07:50. | :08:23.
everyone is having fun. What will your daddy do when he sees | :08:24. | :09:09.
your mother kissing Santa? So here it is Merry Christmas, everybody is | :09:10. | :09:20.
having fun. Luck to the future, it's only just be going. | :09:21. | :09:35.
Merry Christmas to you. The weather is still not looking to Kurds. It is | :09:36. | :09:48.
wet and wild out there we have some stormy weather. Tomorrow beaches | :09:49. | :09:54.
strengthening wind. Possible disruption. Some rain arriving | :09:55. | :10:00.
tomorrow. The heaviest will be after dark, with the only positive | :10:01. | :10:06.
tomorrow is it will be mild. It is the strength of the win to take | :10:07. | :10:09.
notice of, particularly tomorrow afternoon. Do keep upto date of any | :10:10. | :10:17.
update on travel disruption. For today, we'll still has cloud web us. | :10:18. | :10:25.
This area of cloud. We some rain lingering with this weather fronts. | :10:26. | :10:29.
That does clear away into night. It looks fairly quiet, not too bad this | :10:30. | :10:34.
thing tomorrow. We have the next weather systems living in. It will | :10:35. | :10:39.
move across us bringing some heavy rain. By the time getting midday on | :10:40. | :10:45.
Thursday, that a weather front has cleared, so we are left with drier | :10:46. | :10:50.
and brighter conditions. It'll be quite breezy. Tonight, the last of | :10:51. | :10:56.
the rainbow clear away, into the evening it will be fresh. By the end | :10:57. | :11:03.
of the night, temperatures no lower than seven or eight degrees. You | :11:04. | :11:10.
might catch some brightness first thing tomorrow. Drive for the | :11:11. | :11:14.
morning as well. In the afternoon, the cloud increases and we will see | :11:15. | :11:20.
some outbreaks of rain. These are the average wind speeds. The gusts | :11:21. | :11:24.
will be stronger than that. It is looking very wet and windy for the | :11:25. | :11:28.
end of the day and ended tomorrow evening. Temperatures tomorrow will | :11:29. | :11:32.
reach ten or 11 degrees. The southerly winds will be of the gale | :11:33. | :11:39.
force eight, with some rain later. Good visibility will become moderate | :11:40. | :11:40.
too bad. Wet and windy to end the day | :11:41. | :11:58.
tomorrow, but that does clear for Thursday. Brighter conditions on | :11:59. | :12:01.
Thursday. Friday looks mostly dry and bright, but Saturday looks wet | :12:02. | :12:11.
and windy. That is it from me now. We will be back at 10pm. We can join | :12:12. | :12:15.
spotlight now. patchy trade. It is not yet clear | :12:16. | :12:23.
whether it will be a merry Christmas for the region's High Street. The | :12:24. | :12:35.
fair tonight is hosting an event for people and businesses who get | :12:36. | :12:39.
together on Twitter to meet up in real life. Tonight it is business | :12:40. | :12:46.
orientated, it is based around Devon Hour, a community for businesses in | :12:47. | :12:51.
Devon. The founder joins us now. How important is social media? It is | :12:52. | :12:57.
becoming really important. A lot of people are using social media | :12:58. | :13:02.
everyday. More and more businesses in Devon are signing up to it | :13:03. | :13:07.
everyday. It is really important. You have 7000 members. How are you | :13:08. | :13:14.
helping business? We have a pop`up gallery, a group of artists who came | :13:15. | :13:20.
together on Devon Hour and they set up a pop`up gallery. They have got | :13:21. | :13:26.
one in Exeter at the moment. Some fantastic artist. Good for artists | :13:27. | :13:34.
and good for the cafe. There are so many people involved. How important | :13:35. | :13:40.
do you think social media will be in the future? I think it will be | :13:41. | :13:46.
really important. People need to remember that the younger generation | :13:47. | :13:51.
are always on social media. If they are looking for products they will | :13:52. | :13:58.
look for it online. Thank you. If you're interested in Devon Hour, it | :13:59. | :14:05.
on Twitter. So we've seen a mixed picture of the economy, with signs | :14:06. | :14:09.
of recovery there in Exeter, but a battle to find enough apprentices to | :14:10. | :14:12.
fill vacancies. Meanwhile there are calls for more young people in the | :14:13. | :14:16.
South West to take up career opportunities in the Agricultural | :14:17. | :14:18.
and food industries. A three day farming course is being run for | :14:19. | :14:22.
teenagers who are not in education, employment or training so they can | :14:23. | :14:25.
get a taste of what the Agricultural industry has to offer. Johnny | :14:26. | :14:32.
Rutherford reports. Learning how to get stuck in and get your hands | :14:33. | :14:36.
dirty. These teenagers are experiencing farm life as part of a | :14:37. | :14:44.
course at this farm. These young people who are not in employment or | :14:45. | :14:49.
education sometimes can be going around feeling down and dismal | :14:50. | :14:52.
feeling they do not have much hope, and what I hope is that we will be | :14:53. | :14:57.
able to give them a taste of the things available in the role | :14:58. | :15:02.
professions and also inspire them. They may not have had the best art | :15:03. | :15:05.
and life, but that does not mean they are doomed to failure. He said | :15:06. | :15:15.
he started farming after leaving school without qualifications and | :15:16. | :15:18.
today was inspiring youngsters that it is about having a positive | :15:19. | :15:23.
attitude. The idea is to give them experience in the industry. These | :15:24. | :15:28.
are booming industries, very important to the economy. It is | :15:29. | :15:36.
giving them a chance to get involved in this sector. As part of the | :15:37. | :15:43.
experience, this jury at `` the students will gain a qualification. | :15:44. | :15:49.
I applied for an apprenticeship, what better chance to get first`hand | :15:50. | :15:54.
experience? I do not want to be behind a desk, I want to be out and | :15:55. | :16:00.
doing something. It is hoped this taster will point them towards a | :16:01. | :16:05.
career in farming. The pub and the library have been at the heart of | :16:06. | :16:09.
community life in the South West for generations, but both have had to | :16:10. | :16:12.
struggle for survival in recent years. Well in Cornwall the two are | :16:13. | :16:16.
joining forces Yes two pubs in the county are offering customers the | :16:17. | :16:19.
chance to borrow a book alongside their favourite tipple. Spotlight's | :16:20. | :16:22.
David George has been to one of them near Redruth. Starr is a cosy and | :16:23. | :16:34.
comfortable pub with a good of ales and authors. Pubs have been | :16:35. | :16:38.
diversifying as restaurants and post offices for years, but this is the | :16:39. | :16:42.
first time a full library service has been offered with the wines and | :16:43. | :16:55.
beers. This is a famous author. It is a brilliant idea. The nearest | :16:56. | :17:02.
main library is in Redruth, which is two or three miles away. The local | :17:03. | :17:08.
bus service has been cut back dramatically and it does not work as | :17:09. | :17:12.
well as it used to, so it is much better for your `` for local people | :17:13. | :17:17.
to come here. It is a new chapter and the landlord says the longer | :17:18. | :17:22.
opening hours make it ideal. It is picking up every day. People think | :17:23. | :17:27.
it is a good idea. We have signed up new members. We have lent out more | :17:28. | :17:36.
books. There is not a mad rush, but it is starting to get used. It | :17:37. | :17:51.
speaks volumes. This may not be everyone's joys of reading, but | :17:52. | :17:54.
locals here can choose what ever books they like and they will be | :17:55. | :17:59.
delivered here by the library service straight to the pub in a few | :18:00. | :18:04.
days. Cornwall has not yet closed any libraries but budget cuts mean | :18:05. | :18:07.
that the service is under review. The council says the scheme is | :18:08. | :18:13.
simply a way to make books more accessible to more people. It's a | :18:14. | :18:20.
tradition thousands of us sit down to enjoy every Christmas Eve ` | :18:21. | :18:22.
Carols from King's College Cambridge. The service is based on | :18:23. | :18:25.
the traditional Nine Lessons and Carols ` which tells the story of | :18:26. | :18:29.
Jesus's birth. Most people assume it had its origins in the University | :18:30. | :18:32.
College, but in fact, it was created in Cornwall and as Nick Beake | :18:33. | :18:36.
reports it's being staged once again tonight at Truro Cathedral. The eyes | :18:37. | :18:53.
of millions are on the soloist who has the nerve wracking honour of | :18:54. | :18:58.
starting at off. The choir here have made this festive spectacle their | :18:59. | :19:03.
own, but it was Cornwall in 1880 that started this most British | :19:04. | :19:08.
Christmas tradition and today's choir at Truro Cathedral are | :19:09. | :19:12.
bringing the first service back to life. This is one of the orders of | :19:13. | :19:30.
service from 1880. It is a curious mix, some pieces are more like | :19:31. | :19:42.
musicals. I know from reading articles from the press that this | :19:43. | :19:48.
type of singing was not distinguished in churches in | :19:49. | :19:56.
Cornwall at the time. Let us see what happens. They may not have | :19:57. | :20:05.
recognised this vocal warm up back in 1880, but probably this one. They | :20:06. | :20:12.
practised 12 hours awake and learning these old pieces has been | :20:13. | :20:16.
rewarding and challenging. `` a week. We have to pronounce things | :20:17. | :20:24.
properly and there are odd gaps in the words. I have got a solo. For | :20:25. | :20:33.
others, this is not a time for pulling out all the stops, in fact | :20:34. | :20:38.
he is raining it in for a more accurate but Tory and sound. That | :20:39. | :20:44.
will be authentic. It is a bit like having a souped up car. `` Victorian | :20:45. | :21:02.
sound. From the house of beer to the house of God, but research suggests | :21:03. | :21:06.
that the service was a bit like a Christmas present to some very | :21:07. | :21:10.
disgruntled local people who had had their houses knocked down to make | :21:11. | :21:14.
way for the new cathedral. They will be hoping there is no rebellion in | :21:15. | :21:19.
the air tonight with up to 1000 people expected here to celebrate | :21:20. | :21:24.
this often forgotten Cornish invention. | :21:25. | :21:36.
It is time for the weather. Good evening. We have got some stormy | :21:37. | :21:47.
weather with us for tomorrow, more rain, possibly quite torrential, | :21:48. | :21:53.
strengthening winds, it will be quite mild tomorrow, but we do have | :21:54. | :21:58.
a warning out from 3pm tomorrow for the strength of the wind, gusting up | :21:59. | :22:11.
to 60 mph. Earlier on today, you can see that we were in between two lots | :22:12. | :22:18.
of cloud, but tonight it does not look too bad. By the time we get to | :22:19. | :22:23.
tomorrow, we have a weather front moving in bringing in moderate | :22:24. | :22:28.
outbreaks of rain, but this low pressure system will bring | :22:29. | :22:35.
torrential rain tomorrow evening. By Thursday lunchtime, that weather | :22:36. | :22:40.
front will clear and there will be showers, some cooler conditions as | :22:41. | :22:45.
well. Back to today, showery rain continuing for parts of Cornwall and | :22:46. | :22:50.
Devon. Some bright weather as well, this is how it looked earlier | :22:51. | :22:59.
today. Relatively calm conditions. To make the most of the calm | :23:00. | :23:02.
weather, it will turn stormy tomorrow. `` do make the most. If | :23:03. | :23:11.
you did see the sunshine, you are lucky. We will all have more cloud | :23:12. | :23:17.
tomorrow. For tonight, the last of the showers will clear away and we | :23:18. | :23:21.
will have some dry and clear weather. Moving into the early | :23:22. | :23:26.
