The Channel Islands Air Search has announced it will have to buy a new | :00:09. | :01:03.
aeroplane to replace the Lion's Pride, which crashed in Jersey in | :01:04. | :01:07.
November. The rescue charity had hoped to be able to repair the | :01:08. | :01:10.
aircraft but says the potential price of those works makes it more | :01:11. | :01:14.
cost effective to buy a brand new rescue aircraft in 2015. Tim | :01:15. | :01:18.
Robinson reports. This was the scene when the Lion's | :01:19. | :01:21.
Pride crash`landed on a dark and stormy night, just yards from a | :01:22. | :01:26.
clifftop. The plane had been inadvertanly flying on the wrong | :01:27. | :01:29.
fuel tanks. They ran out and its engines cut out over the sea at low | :01:30. | :01:34.
altitude. At first people were relieved its five crew and | :01:35. | :01:37.
passengers walked away with their lives. But almost immediately | :01:38. | :01:40.
thoughts turned to the damage done to this vital tool in the Channel | :01:41. | :01:45.
Islands' search and rescue armoury. Engineers painstakingly dismantled | :01:46. | :01:47.
and removed the plane and specialists began assessing whether | :01:48. | :01:52.
it could be repaired. Six weeks of investigation showed the potential | :01:53. | :01:55.
repair bill is so expensive the charity decided it's actually better | :01:56. | :02:00.
off buying a brand`new aircraft. That will happen in three stages. | :02:01. | :02:05.
From about a month's time cover will be provided by a temporary Islander, | :02:06. | :02:08.
like the one which crashed, but without the specialist search | :02:09. | :02:12.
equipment. Four months later they'll borrow a used Islander with that | :02:13. | :02:16.
search equipment to tide them over. But that aircraft can't be the | :02:17. | :02:19.
long`term solution because it has more flying hours ` like miles on | :02:20. | :02:23.
the clock for a car ` than the plane that crashed. So the charity will | :02:24. | :02:27.
raise money to buy a brand new Islander in 2015, which it hopes to | :02:28. | :02:33.
use for the next 30 years. All that will be extremely expensive and will | :02:34. | :02:36.
require a big contribution from islanders if this rescue plan is to | :02:37. | :02:44.
get off the ground. Earlier I spoke to the founder of | :02:45. | :02:47.
Channel Islands Air Search, Roger Dadd, in our Guernsey Studio. I | :02:48. | :02:51.
began by asking him how much a new aircraft will cost and if the | :02:52. | :02:57.
charity could afford it. We are very confident we can raise the sum | :02:58. | :03:01.
because the response on behalf of the public of all of the Channel | :03:02. | :03:07.
Islands has been fantastic. The basic aircraft is ?1.25 million but | :03:08. | :03:12.
that is only the beginning of the story because we had to put special | :03:13. | :03:18.
equipment on board, and that has yet to be settled. How much have you | :03:19. | :03:26.
raised so far? I can't tell you that. We are in the process of | :03:27. | :03:30.
looking at it and we will have answers towards middle of January. | :03:31. | :03:36.
It is a month since the incident in Jersey. How are the crew coping now? | :03:37. | :03:43.
Everybody has settled back down again, we are just focusing on the | :03:44. | :03:47.
new decision, which is not to proceed with the old aeroplane and | :03:48. | :03:54.
be very expensive repairs but getting a new aircraft and the | :03:55. | :03:57.
interim measures to get `` to keep this going. Are islanders vulnerable | :03:58. | :04:03.
until those aeroplanes come into service? No, there is a temporary | :04:04. | :04:11.
measure whereby the Brecon helicopter will operate and use some | :04:12. | :04:17.
of our crew's observers, so there is a degree of cover. It is not as | :04:18. | :04:22.
extensive as we would be providing in the long`term but at least there | :04:23. | :04:27.
is something there. Average household bills for rubbish | :04:28. | :04:30.
in Guernsey will double in the next three years under plans announced | :04:31. | :04:33.
today. Charges for collection and processing of waste could go up to | :04:34. | :04:36.
around ?4 a week ` that's around ?200 a year. The parishes will stay | :04:37. | :04:40.
involved but people will have to buy special bags. The States will meet | :04:41. | :04:44.
in January to decide on the proposals to focus on re`cycling | :04:45. | :04:49.
rather than landfill. What we are moving to is a waste | :04:50. | :04:53.
management system where we do our bit by the planet, we reuse and | :04:54. | :04:59.
recycle, but we also we divert as much waste from the end solution, so | :05:00. | :05:07.
the extra cost is to make sure we can do the job properly. | :05:08. | :05:11.
The French government has announced Jersey is no longer on its tax black | :05:12. | :05:15.
list. In August, the island was placed on a French list of | :05:16. | :05:17.
jurisdictions considered as "non`cooperative" when it comes to | :05:18. | :05:21.
exchanging tax information. Jersey's Chief Minister, Senator Ian Gorst, | :05:22. | :05:24.
says the change has come after efforts by the States to meet | :05:25. | :05:27.
criteria set by France. Jersey is the first place in the | :05:28. | :05:30.
British Isles to ban a psychoactive drug. Ethylphenidate, which goes | :05:31. | :05:33.
under the street name "magic crystals", has been made illegal in | :05:34. | :05:36.
the island. There'll be a one week amnesty for people to hand the Class | :05:37. | :05:40.
B drug to police. Youngsters have been warned of the harmful affects | :05:41. | :05:43.
of so`called legal highs since the death of 16`year`old Max Blandin, | :05:44. | :05:46.
who's believed to have been using them. The health service say they're | :05:47. | :05:49.
becoming more available and this particular one is one of the most | :05:50. | :05:55.
toxic ever seen in Jersey. The drug is chemically similar to | :05:56. | :05:59.
amphetamines but several times more potent so it's come down affect our | :06:00. | :06:07.
very severe, leaving users paranoid and irrational. In some cases they | :06:08. | :06:13.
might actually suffer from full`blown psychosis. | :06:14. | :06:17.
An ?8 million revamp of one of Jersey's oldest hotels has begun. | :06:18. | :06:20.
The Southampton Hotel and nearby bar are being turned into offices and a | :06:21. | :06:23.
restaurant. Built in the 19th century, developers say it will be | :06:24. | :06:26.
returned to its former glory, as most of the original facade will be | :06:27. | :06:30.
saved. It should take a year and a half to complete. | :06:31. | :06:37.
One of Jersey's top football players is calling for the island to follow | :06:38. | :06:41.
rivals Guernsey FC and enter an English league. Former captain Luke | :06:42. | :06:44.
Watson says the sport is in danger of becoming stale in Jersey and | :06:45. | :06:47.
playing more fixtures on the mainland could be the answer. So | :06:48. | :06:51.
could we soon see a Jersey FC and will that draw the crowds to | :06:52. | :06:54.
Springfield? Pam Caulfield reports. Making history in San Marino. | :06:55. | :07:00.
Representing England, Jersey made its mark on an international stage | :07:01. | :07:05.
in 2012. At the time officials wanted that legacy to continue. | :07:06. | :07:13.
I believe the Jersey FA should be getting behind these guys. If you | :07:14. | :07:19.
have young players in the island, they should aspire to this. | :07:20. | :07:22.
It was suggested then that Jersey should join an English league. But | :07:23. | :07:25.
it's not happened, and the player who captained the side through the | :07:26. | :07:31.
tournament believes now is the time. Jersey team playing in the UK league | :07:32. | :07:35.
week in, week out, would be what I would want to see. I feel personally | :07:36. | :07:39.
that foot will over here has become a bit stale. `` foot Pole. There has | :07:40. | :07:51.
been no real progression and I think it is time to step up and match what | :07:52. | :07:55.
Guernsey is doing across the water. And by following Guernsey's lead | :07:56. | :07:57.
they hope that Springfield could become more like Footes Lane, with | :07:58. | :08:01.
more matches, bigger crowds and a better atmosphere. | :08:02. | :08:10.
The benefits, obviously you are testing yourself out every single | :08:11. | :08:14.
week against players you don't know so it is a higher level and an | :08:15. | :08:22.
unknown quantity. Before you knew a player's weaknesses and strengths, | :08:23. | :08:26.
now you are stepping out into the unknown every week. | :08:27. | :08:30.
That success has come after years of hard work and dedication and funding | :08:31. | :08:35.
but those behind a future Jersey FC feel it is worth the effort to | :08:36. | :08:42.
improve sport within the island and rich in the rivalry with teams | :08:43. | :08:50.
outside it. With Christmas soon upon us, this | :08:51. | :08:53.
week we're featuring festive songs and carols performed by choirs from | :08:54. | :08:55.
around the Channel Islands. Tonight's comes from Les Beaucamps | :08:56. | :08:57.
School in Guernsey. # Candlelight burning bright, | :08:58. | :09:16.
flickering and shimmering # Set the world aglow upon this dark and | :09:17. | :09:24.

Congratulations to the school and all of the quires that have taken | :10:04. | :10:10.
part this week. `` choirs. More unsettled weather across the | :10:11. | :10:26.
weekend. We have some rain with us tomorrow, some strong winds | :10:27. | :10:30.
overnight, particularly first thing. Rain will be quite heavy at times | :10:31. | :10:35.
and we have already seen quite a bit of rain through the week. There is | :10:36. | :10:41.
possible disruption with the strong winds and heavy rain. Keep up with | :10:42. | :10:49.
your ABC radio stations for the latest. `` TBC. `` BBC. The rain | :10:50. | :11:01.
does eventually clear. On Sunday it is still looking quite windy. We | :11:02. | :11:04.
will have some showers through the day as well. Tonight it is dry at | :11:05. | :11:10.
first but this rain arrives after midnight, some heavier downpours | :11:11. | :11:14.
into the early hours, which is when the south`westerly winds start to | :11:15. | :11:19.
peak. A mild night, with temperatures no lower than eight | :11:20. | :11:24.
degrees. We will have some stronger gusts of wind. The winds easing for | :11:25. | :11:32.
a bit in the afternoon but still some fresh winds and we see the rain | :11:33. | :11:38.
clearing towards tomorrow evening. Temperatures still fairly mild, up | :11:39. | :11:39.
to 11 or 12 agrees. Some unsettled weather continuing | :11:40. | :12:09.
for the weekend. On Sunday we will see some sunshine along with showers | :12:10. | :12:14.
but Monday and Tuesday we expect more heavy rain and further strong | :12:15. | :12:15.
winds. Salcombe. A dog died after eating a | :12:16. | :12:58.
similar substance on a beach in Cornwall. | :12:59. | :13:01.
Coming up later a Christmas carol from a Cornish Choir. Also still | :13:02. | :13:08.
ahead on Spotlight tonight. A dazzling display ` the festive | :13:09. | :13:14.
lights with a very special purpose. We will be meeting this young lady, | :13:15. | :13:19.
who for the past three years has broken world, European and British | :13:20. | :13:24.
powerlifting records. Volunteers are being called into the | :13:25. | :13:27.
Royal Cornwall Hospital to help support patients and staff in the | :13:28. | :13:29.
hospital's busy emergency department. They spend time on | :13:30. | :13:32.
non`clinical duties, freeing up nursing staff to concentrate on | :13:33. | :13:35.
medical care and emergencies. As Eleanor Parkinson reports, it's | :13:36. | :13:45.
being hailed a big success. This man was brought in to the department | :13:46. | :13:50.
after his pacemaker gave him programme `` problems. A volunteer | :13:51. | :13:57.
gets him a cup of tea and stays for a chat. I thought that was | :13:58. | :14:01.
excellent. I have been in for a long time this morning. There are lots of | :14:02. | :14:07.
areas of inaction and short bursts of people dealing with you. Suddenly | :14:08. | :14:12.
you are left on your own again. This was a nice diversion. They really | :14:13. | :14:19.
like it. Not all the staff have enough time to sit with patients. It | :14:20. | :14:26.
can be daunting coming into and emergency department on your own and | :14:27. | :14:32.
they really appreciate it. Nurses the volunteers do some of the caring | :14:33. | :14:35.
work they do because they are busy with emergencies. Little things like | :14:36. | :14:41.
a cup of tea and a chart, things which are very important to the | :14:42. | :14:45.
patient. We do not get the time to do them. It really does make their | :14:46. | :14:55.
experience so much better. I think it helps with the atmosphere in any | :14:56. | :14:58.
department but especially the emergence and departments. They know | :14:59. | :15:03.
these are people who have the time and the interest, they choose to be | :15:04. | :15:08.
there, they are not paid to be there so they really want to help. There | :15:09. | :15:14.
are more than 500 volunteers in the trust. The trust says if anyone | :15:15. | :15:20.
thinks they have skills to offer, they get in touch. `` they should | :15:21. | :15:26.
get and Hutch. Time for the sport now and Dave has | :15:27. | :15:29.
a powerful story coming up, haven't you? Absolutely. But I will keep you | :15:30. | :15:34.
waiting. Exeter Chiefs seek their first win | :15:35. | :15:37.
in six games when rugby's Premiership resumes this weekend. | :15:38. | :15:40.
After a tough run of late, including two ordeals against the European Cup | :15:41. | :15:43.
holders Toulon, the Chiefs are looking forward to getting back into | :15:44. | :15:46.
the groove against lowly Newcastle Falcons at Sandy Park tomorrow. | :15:47. | :15:59.
Gareth Steenson returns from injury, bring in Ceri Sweeney or will they | :16:00. | :16:03.
stick with the promising Henry Slade? It is great to make that | :16:04. | :16:09.
competition. There are no questions that all three of them could run a | :16:10. | :16:15.
game in the premiership. Yeovil Town begin their festive programme aiming | :16:16. | :16:18.
for a fifth game without defeat in the Championship. After gaining a | :16:19. | :16:24.
valuable point at Barnsley, the Glovers try to crawl out of the | :16:25. | :16:27.
bottom three by beating Blackburn Rovers at Huish Park. The League Two | :16:28. | :16:31.
ball starts rolling tonight at St James' Park where Exeter City look | :16:32. | :16:34.
to follow up their win at Accrington with another against Chesterfield. | :16:35. | :16:37.
After two straight defeats, Plymouth Argyle hope to find the knack of | :16:38. | :16:40.
scoring against Bury at Home Park, while bottom`of`the`table Torquay | :16:41. | :16:43.
United, buoyed by their win over Southend last week, attempt the same | :16:44. | :16:50.
at Dagenham and Redbridge. She's been described as the | :16:51. | :16:53.
strongest school girl in Britain. 17`year`old Shahar Head from Newton | :16:54. | :16:56.
Abbot is the world drug`free powerlifting champion, coming first | :16:57. | :16:59.
in her age category and second overall. I visited her at her gym. | :17:00. | :17:13.
Hello there. You are supposed to be the strongest schoolgirl in Britain | :17:14. | :17:19.
but with visual powerlifting gear. I've just come from college where | :17:20. | :17:26.
I'm studying. I have to change. Alex Deeterlee has powered her way | :17:27. | :17:29.
Finally, Plymouth Raiders have the chance to avenge their BBL Cup | :17:30. | :17:32.
semifinal defeat by Leicester Riders when they face | :17:33. | :17:39.
not bad for a girl who was bullied at school. I used to get bullied at | :17:40. | :17:46.
school so I decided to change. Someone told me to try lifting | :17:47. | :17:53.
weights. I loved it ever since. I never knew about it before. It took | :17:54. | :17:59.
me by surprise. Powerlifting is different from weightlifting. There | :18:00. | :18:03.
are no disciplines like the clean and jerk and snatch. Instead they | :18:04. | :18:09.
have the deadlifts in which she lifted 170 kilos to get the world | :18:10. | :18:16.
title. There is the squat lift where she lifted 23 stones. And the bench | :18:17. | :18:24.
press four which she registered 18 kilos. I never expected to get far | :18:25. | :18:30.
as I have in such a short space of time. The training is intense and | :18:31. | :18:35.
very hard. It is a long journey with injuries. I am completely surprised | :18:36. | :18:45.
by how well I have done. Some federations have tried to get into | :18:46. | :18:48.
the Olympics but claimed there are too many power spots in the | :18:49. | :18:52.
Olympics, but hopefully one day. That is your lot, I need a break. So | :18:53. | :19:01.
did I, after matching her pound for pound full top `` pound. Plymouth | :19:02. | :19:11.
Raiders have the chance to avenge their semi`couple `` semifinal | :19:12. | :19:16.
defeat at the pavillion this Sunday afternoon. Enjoy your Christmas | :19:17. | :19:23.
shopping. Thank you very much. | :19:24. | :19:26.
Now, every year some people go all out to have the best display of | :19:27. | :19:29.
Christmas lights in the neighbourhood ` and you either love | :19:30. | :19:33.
them or hate them! Well, this year, one young man from Braunton in North | :19:34. | :19:36.
Devon, has pulled out all the stops and is raising money for charity at | :19:37. | :19:40.
the same time. Spotlight's North Devon reporter, Andrea Ormsby, has | :19:41. | :19:45.
the story. It has been weeks in the planning | :19:46. | :19:50.
and now it is dazzling the neighbours and they love it. I | :19:51. | :19:55.
planned it all out first, it took me three weeks altogether. Endless | :19:56. | :20:05.
night, and most evenings. It took me a while. I have had a few comments | :20:06. | :20:11.
like it is brilliant and well done. I have had if few donations. It is | :20:12. | :20:17.
the creation of Josh will Lidl to raise money for a new chemotherapy | :20:18. | :20:22.
units. `` Josh Liddall. Both his grandparents died off cancer. I | :20:23. | :20:30.
think it is a great idea. It is the best thing he could have done. We | :20:31. | :20:35.
really are proud of him. It is brilliant. You know where you are | :20:36. | :20:40.
coming, round the corner. You must be proud of him? Oh yes, very proud | :20:41. | :20:45.
and I think his grandfather would have been very crowded as well. `` | :20:46. | :20:54.
very proud. We have a river of lights here. We have bested penguins | :20:55. | :21:07.
seem. `` festive penguin seen. Next year he plans to go bigger and | :21:08. | :21:12.
better and in the future watch out King of Christmas lights, you have | :21:13. | :21:16.
competition. Spectacular. Didn't he do well. | :21:17. | :21:23.
Please do share your Christmas lights pictures with us. Dean from | :21:24. | :21:26.
St Dennis in Cornwall sent this one in earlier. Thank you. You can share | :21:27. | :21:34.
yours on our facebook page, that's facebook.com/bbcspotlight. We look | :21:35. | :21:43.
forward to seeing them. This is my last programme before Christmas so I | :21:44. | :21:46.
want to thank everyone who sent in Christmas cards and gifts, very kind | :21:47. | :21:51.
and generous and much appreciated. Now for the weather. If you have | :21:52. | :22:00.
outdoor decorations, make sure they are securely fastened because we | :22:01. | :22:05.
have strong winds. We have more unsettled weather across the | :22:06. | :22:10.
weekend, so it will be windy and there will be rain and showers. We | :22:11. | :22:16.
start off with a weather warning from the Met Office for the rain | :22:17. | :22:23.
tonight. Strong gas when as well. It is especially their heavy rainfall | :22:24. | :22:28.
to watch out for the top `` strong gusts of wind. Flood alerts are out | :22:29. | :22:37.
for rivers around the region. Keep an eye on the Environment Agency | :22:38. | :22:44.
website. This is the satellite picture from earlier on. You can see | :22:45. | :22:49.
this huge patch of cloud moving end during the day which is associated | :22:50. | :22:55.
with an area of low pressure. We will have heavy rainfall, peaking | :22:56. | :22:59.
