Good evenings, the headlines. This Monday night. Trees down, ferries

:00:07.:00:15.

cancelled and flights disrupteds as severe gale force winds sweep across

:00:16.:00:19.

the Channel Islands Although the ferries are running behind schedule

:00:20.:00:23.

because of the weather, the good news is that everybody is going to

:00:24.:00:27.

travel to where they want to go and the turkeys will be on the table for

:00:28.:00:30.

Christmas. Here is the deep area of low pressure which has brought us

:00:31.:00:35.

the heavy rain, and strong winds once again, which will continue for

:00:36.:00:38.

a time through this evening and the first part of tonight. Join me later

:00:39.:00:43.

for the full forecast. Also coming up in the programme

:00:44.:00:48.

Full mark, the top institutions keen to make a university in Guernsey and

:00:49.:00:56.

Alderney reality TfL. And... # Tonight we celebrate. #

:00:57.:01:02.

The Guernsey school helping us get into the Christmas spirit.

:01:03.:01:13.

Christmas week in the Channel Islands has begun with widespread

:01:14.:01:19.

disruption as gale force weather has battered Guernsey and Jersey, trees

:01:20.:01:25.

are down and air and sea passengers face delays and cancellation, it

:01:26.:01:29.

comes as forecasters are issued a read warning, the most serious.

:01:30.:01:36.

A victim of the storm. This tree simply couldn't stand up to the high

:01:37.:01:41.

winds and torrential rain battering the Channel Islands. This was Jersey

:01:42.:01:46.

this afternoon. No surprise that sea and air passengers trying to get

:01:47.:01:53.

away for Christmas face disruption, with severe gale force winds

:01:54.:01:58.

expected ferries were cancelled They have been disrupted, although

:01:59.:02:03.

the conventional ferries are running behind schedule because of the

:02:04.:02:06.

weather, the good news is that everybody is going to travel to

:02:07.:02:09.

where they want to go, and the turkeys will be on the table for

:02:10.:02:14.

Christmas. That is because the main freight carrier battled the

:02:15.:02:16.

conditions and made it in. Much to the relief of shoppers on

:02:17.:02:21.

the busiest food shopping day of the year.

:02:22.:02:24.

The shops are full, there is plenty of stock, there is no need for

:02:25.:02:27.

anybody to panic. It is OK. Clearly the boat that was due in this

:02:28.:02:32.

afternoon has been rescheduled until tomorrow morning, and weather

:02:33.:02:36.

dependent that should be arriving at 6.00 in the morning, so the food

:02:37.:02:40.

should be on the shelves tomorrow morning. Tomorrow's delivery is

:02:41.:02:43.

stock we are bringing in for post Christmas, so most of the stock we

:02:44.:02:47.

have for Christmas now is in the islands, so everyone should be fine.

:02:48.:02:51.

Forecasters say the conditions are likely to last through today and

:02:52.:02:54.

overnight. The result of a rapidly deepening

:02:55.:02:58.

low pressure in the Atlantic. This weather is almost as bad as it can

:02:59.:03:03.

get, we have issued a red severe weather warning, which takes into

:03:04.:03:08.

account storm force ten winds with, gusts to 80mph. We would normally

:03:09.:03:13.

expect to issue one less frequently than once a year.

:03:14.:03:16.

So, although Christmas week has started wet and windy, the good news

:03:17.:03:20.

is the weather in the Channel Islands is set to improve by

:03:21.:03:27.

Christmas Day. And BBC Guernsey and radio Jersey

:03:28.:03:30.

will have the latest travel information for you from 6.00

:03:31.:03:35.

tomorrow morning and Emily will have a full forecast later. More news now

:03:36.:03:39.

and a man has been charged with robbery after Guernsey police

:03:40.:03:43.

travelled to the UK to arrest him. Shaun Ogden from Eastbourne is

:03:44.:03:48.

accused of stealing ?140 from Union Street Stores in March. He was flown

:03:49.:03:52.

back to the island yesterday and appeared in court this morning.

:03:53.:03:57.

Jersey's bailiff has extended his appeal for victims of the Philippine

:03:58.:04:01.

typhoon. People can donate to the end of February. Nearly 93 thousand

:04:02.:04:08.

Nick Brown has been raced for islanders. And bus user in Jersey

:04:09.:04:13.

were treated to a free journey course si of the island transport

:04:14.:04:19.

initiative: It saw an extra 160 passenger use the bus service than

:04:20.:04:24.

the previous Sunday, LibertyBus say they would consider doing it again.

:04:25.:04:29.

This initiative, TTS paid for to cover the service, yesterday, so we

:04:30.:04:35.

will do it any time TTS want to support the local business, support

:04:36.:04:38.

the local community, you know, this is about us working in partnership

:04:39.:04:42.

with TTS, working in partnership with the island of Jersey.

:04:43.:04:47.

You are watching the BBC here in the Channel Islands. Plenty more still

:04:48.:04:51.

to come, including Spotlight with Justin and Natalie. Given just 0%

:04:52.:04:55.

chance of survival, the triplets defying the odds to celebrate

:04:56.:05:05.

Christmas. First the organisation wanting to

:05:06.:05:08.

create a university in Guernsey and Alderney have been approached by top

:05:09.:05:12.

institutions keen to award the degrees. That is according to the

:05:13.:05:16.

woman behind the ambitious plans. The project could see 2 thousand

:05:17.:05:21.

sthueants based in the islands. `` students. Guernsey could be

:05:22.:05:27.

featuring in its own prospectus if plans to establish a university

:05:28.:05:31.

become a reality. People can study for degrees in both Guernsey and

:05:32.:05:35.

Jersey but this proposal is to provide a privately run facility in

:05:36.:05:39.

Guernsey and Alderney for up to 2,000 students. It is aiming of the

:05:40.:05:44.

of Russell Group standards, similar to what is on offer at Oxford. Those

:05:45.:05:50.

behind the scheme claim there is a lot of interest In 2014, starting in

:05:51.:05:56.

January, we will be moving the university forward in every respect.

:05:57.:06:00.

One of the them things for us, is that we are being approached by high

:06:01.:06:05.

level university, from across the world. The States hasn't been asked

:06:06.:06:10.

to provide any funds, but has agreed to support and encourage the not for

:06:11.:06:13.

profit project, which is due to begin in October.

:06:14.:06:16.

But concerns have been raised over the impact on housing stock and

:06:17.:06:21.

public service, as well as the island's reputation should the

:06:22.:06:24.

university fail. There is a long way to go yet, and

:06:25.:06:29.

reputation risk must be at the forefront of my minds, any new

:06:30.:06:33.

business coming to Guernsey will have a risk, so I feel our job is to

:06:34.:06:39.

make sure it is a minimal risk. They are looking for funding from local

:06:40.:06:45.

high net worth individuals and businesses in Guernsey na, are

:06:46.:06:49.

better at assessing risk and putting their money in than with the States

:06:50.:06:53.

are Ikely to be. The States are not being asked for money any way.

:06:54.:06:58.

With ambitious plans to introduce postgraduate courses in October the

:06:59.:07:01.

woman behind the project says everything is on schedule.

:07:02.:07:05.

I would say we are on track, clearly there is work to be done, on

:07:06.:07:11.

immigration, and housing, and we are currently in discussion with those

:07:12.:07:14.

departments. It is still unclear where it will be

:07:15.:07:19.

sited. Who will pay for it and when the first students will ab rive ``

:07:20.:07:24.

arrive. Those behind the scheme say they won't have to revise their

:07:25.:07:27.

plans and are determined to establish a high quality university.

:07:28.:07:35.

That is a story we will keep across here on the programme. Now the

:07:36.:07:38.

weather. We saw in Amy's report about the bad conditions that have

:07:39.:07:41.

been facing the Channel Islands throughout the course of the day.

:07:42.:07:46.

The latest details come from Emily Wood. We do still have heavy rain

:07:47.:07:51.

and strong winds with us for a time this evening. It looks like the

:07:52.:07:55.

winds will peak over the next couple of hour, with storm force winds

:07:56.:07:59.

possible, that is gusting up to 80mph. Saw some heavy rain for a

:08:00.:08:03.

time at first tonight as well, though after midnight it looks like

:08:04.:08:08.

the rain will start to clear and the winds will ease for first thing

:08:09.:08:13.

tomorrow morning. But do take care if you are out and about. Keep

:08:14.:08:17.

across your BBC local radio station for any further disruption into

:08:18.:08:21.

tomorrow morning. On the satellite picture from

:08:22.:08:26.

earlier, you can see this huge area of cloud which has swept in from the

:08:27.:08:30.

west. It is associated with a fairly deep area of low pressure, some

:08:31.:08:33.

active weather fronts in there as well. This waving weather front will

:08:34.:08:37.

bring heavy rain and the stronger winds for a time this evening. So as

:08:38.:08:42.

we go through the evening we will continue with the wet weather, into

:08:43.:08:46.

tomorrow and by midday the rain should have cleared. We will see

:08:47.:08:50.

showers and windy condition, but the winds won't be as strong. Then, for

:08:51.:08:54.

Christmas Day, we are looking at much lighter winds, still unsettled,

:08:55.:09:00.

a weather front nearby, a chance of showers but there will be some

:09:01.:09:02.

sunshine mixed in there. For tonight, we are still with the heavy

:09:03.:09:07.

rain, still these winds yet to peak. After midnight, the heaviest of the

:09:08.:09:11.

rain should clear, and although still windy, a snuers with us `` a

:09:12.:09:18.

few showers. Temperatures no lower than 8 C. For tomorrow, we will have

:09:19.:09:22.

a few showers with us through the day. Moving through quickly, a

:09:23.:09:27.

fairly brisk west or south`west wind, blustery winds with the

:09:28.:09:30.

shower, but through the afternoon we will start to see a few more drier

:09:31.:09:34.

and clearer spell, and still fairly mild air with us tomorrow,

:09:35.:09:39.

temperatures between nine and 1 C for tomorrow afternoon.

:09:40.:09:45.

We have some scattered locally squally showers, visibility

:09:46.:09:48.

generally good but locally poor The winds from the south`west that are

:09:49.:09:53.

force five to six but locally a force seven to gale force eight

:09:54.:09:57.

Particularly at first. Times of high water for tomorrow.

:09:58.:10:08.

Big waved and choppy or messy conditions. Further showers is and

:10:09.:10:16.

heavy rain Thursday and Friday. Not too bad for Christmas Day but

:10:17.:10:22.

take care in that bad weather. With Christmas on us we have been

:10:23.:10:29.

featuring festive songs and Carols. Tonight we come from Melrose in

:10:30.:10:34.

Jersey. That are singing one of their favourite songs from their

:10:35.:10:39.

Nativity. # Tonight we celebrate a baby king

:10:40.:10:44.

is born # Tonight we celebrate a saviour for

:10:45.:10:49.

us all # Jesus was born for us. #

:10:50.:11:09.

# Tonight we celebrate a gift from the Lord on high

:11:10.:11:19.

# Tonight we celebrate his love # We sing and shout

:11:20.:11:26.

# We let our praises out # Jesus the Son of God has been born

:11:27.:11:34.

had been tonight we celebrate a baby king is born

:11:35.:11:41.

# Tonight swell brat a saviour for us all

:11:42.:11:44.

# So we sing and we shout # And we let our praises out

:11:45.:11:51.

# Because Jesus Son of God has been born

:11:52.:11:54.

# Jesus Son of God has been born # Jesus the Son of God has been born

:11:55.:12:01.

for us. # APPLAUSE.

:12:02.:12:03.

Brilliant. If you have been affected by the bad weather we hope those

:12:04.:12:08.

children cheered you up. Thanks to our schools that have taken part in

:12:09.:12:12.

our festivities over the past week. That is it for now. Back at eight

:12:13.:12:16.

and at 10.25. Here is Simon and Natalie. Bye for now.

:12:17.:12:23.

a result of an attack, it costs the charity ?50,000 to replace.

:12:24.:12:27.

If you've just joined us ` welcome to Spotlight from the BBC. Still to

:12:28.:12:31.

come on our last full programme before Christmas.

:12:32.:12:35.

We've reported on them all year but a foodbank brings a special

:12:36.:12:43.

Christmas gift. God bless these guys. The kids love it as more

:12:44.:12:46.

because they have their little hats on.

:12:47.:12:50.

And from the new to the old ` a fresh sound to Christmas before we

:12:51.:12:54.

hear our final carol. Onto the sport and Dave's here with

:12:55.:13:02.

the final round`up before Christmas. First, football how did Yeovil get

:13:03.:13:09.

on Dave ` good news? I'm afraid not. Yeovil Town failed to stretch their

:13:10.:13:12.

unbeaten run in the Championship following a one goal loss to

:13:13.:13:16.

Blackburn Rovers at Huish Park. Jordan Rhodes struck in the second

:13:17.:13:19.

half to keep the Glovers next`to`the bottom of the standings. Again, they

:13:20.:13:23.

can count themselves unlucky after they twice hit the framework,

:13:24.:13:26.

leaving their manager a little frustrated.

:13:27.:13:34.

We are not too disappointed. We are not devastated. We are disappointed

:13:35.:13:41.

to have lost a point. They are still learning and we will keep going. In

:13:42.:13:45.

League Two, Aaron Downes gave Torquay United tail`to`tail

:13:46.:13:47.

victories to take them out of the relegation spots. This one at

:13:48.:13:50.

Dagenham and Redbridge with the centre`back scoring just after

:13:51.:13:53.

half`time. The Gulls now look for a hat`trick in Boxing Day's home duel

:13:54.:13:57.

with Bristol Rovers. There was a pick`me`up for Plymouth Argyle at

:13:58.:14:00.

Home Park against Bury. Keelan Lavery and Reuben Reid gave the

:14:01.:14:03.

Pilgrims a 2`1 winning result, the perfect tonic ahead of Boxing Day's

:14:04.:14:09.

test at second`placed Oxford. Exeter City's home form let them

:14:10.:14:12.

down again as leaders Chesterfield beat them two`nil on Friday night to

:14:13.:14:16.

leave them five points adrift of the play`off pack.

:14:17.:14:24.

There are moments when they out powered us. It doesn't happen too

:14:25.:14:32.

often but we have to make it doesn't happen going forward as often as it

:14:33.:14:37.

has done in the last week or two. Exeter Chiefs have gone up to fifth

:14:38.:14:40.

in rugby's Premiership with a hard`fought 16`3 win over Newcastle

:14:41.:14:43.

Falcons at Sandy Park. After three Gareth Steenson penalties put the

:14:44.:14:47.

Chiefs 9`0 ahead, the only try came from scrum half Haydn Thomas. He

:14:48.:14:50.

danced his way over to end Exeter's run of five defeats in a row in

:14:51.:14:55.

league and cup and set them up for Harlequins at Twickenham next

:14:56.:14:59.

Saturday. Penzance and Newlyn's Olympic and

:15:00.:15:01.

World Championship rower Helen Glover could be reunited with her

:15:02.:15:04.

Olympic pairs partner Heather Stanning from Yeovil. They won

:15:05.:15:08.

Britain's first gold medal at the 2012 London Games. Since then,

:15:09.:15:13.

Heather returned to her Army post and Polly Swann stepped into her

:15:14.:15:16.

shoes to achieve more success with Helen. But Glover found herself

:15:17.:15:21.

taking on more responsibility and now Stanning is back training

:15:22.:15:31.

full`time. Whether I wrote with Helen again or not, we will wait and

:15:32.:15:40.

see. `` whether I ride. She is a fantastic athlete and she definitely

:15:41.:15:45.

brings the best out of me. I am looking forward to training with her

:15:46.:15:49.

again. All it remains for me to say is have a lovely Christmas and a

:15:50.:15:56.

very happy New Year. Good luck to all our teams over the

:15:57.:16:00.

festive period. Now a family from Cornwall whose triplets were born

:16:01.:16:03.

thirteen weeks prematurely have recently celebrated their fifth

:16:04.:16:06.

birthdays. Parents Sam and Andrew Paciuszko from Truro were warned

:16:07.:16:09.

their children only had a thirty per cent chance of survival.

:16:10.:16:15.

Well they defied the odds and the triplets are proving to be quite a

:16:16.:16:19.

handful for mum and dad. John Danks reports. At birth, they were tiny

:16:20.:16:27.

and fighting for life. Now, five years on, they are big and

:16:28.:16:33.

absolutely full of it. Harry, Martha and EV weighed around ?2 when they

:16:34.:16:38.

were born. Due to a lack of beds, they spent weeks apart receiving

:16:39.:16:41.

specialist treatment at three different hospitals. They had a

:16:42.:16:48.

whole host of medical problems. Thanks to the medical staff, they

:16:49.:16:55.

are all here to tell the tale all fit and fighting well, other than

:16:56.:17:00.

coughs and colds. We filmed them after they were allowed home. I

:17:01.:17:05.

remember the first night with them being here. Two of them were still

:17:06.:17:09.

on oxygen so we were paranoid of what to do. We were doing things on

:17:10.:17:16.

our own for the first time. It was a bit scary. We revisited them again

:17:17.:17:21.

on their first birthday. Mum and dad now fully in the swing of childcare.

:17:22.:17:28.

It is a constant round of feeding, sterilising, changing. It is

:17:29.:17:34.

endless. They wouldn't have it any other way and now with the children

:17:35.:17:38.

attending schools, the normality of family life is something they

:17:39.:17:43.

cherish. Part of it seems a distant memory. Five years has flown past. I

:17:44.:17:48.

am so grateful for the help that we had. We are really lucky. It is hard

:17:49.:17:57.

work but, yes, we came out the lucky side of it. Now their birthdays or

:17:58.:18:02.

out of the way, they are turning their attention to that other

:18:03.:18:03.

special day in the calendar. More than 200 families in Cornwall

:18:04.:18:10.

who are struggling to buy food this Christmas will get a free Christmas

:18:11.:18:14.

meal this year, thanks to a local charity. The food bank in Camborne

:18:15.:18:17.

is delivering a turkey, mince pies and Christmas pudding to people who

:18:18.:18:20.

can't afford food or presents. Eleanor Parkinson reports.

:18:21.:18:26.

Volunteers have been busy for several weeks putting together the

:18:27.:18:32.

perfect Christmas meal. This year they are helping more than 200

:18:33.:18:36.

farmers who they say of facing a bleak Christmas. We have put the

:18:37.:18:43.

level at 200 and we have 227 but we could have done 500. It is a big

:18:44.:18:50.

problem but as you can see, we can't do any more. Each box will include

:18:51.:19:01.

the things that we all enjoyed. Actions `` a Christmas pudding,

:19:02.:19:05.

Christmas cake and chocolate is. Donations were still rolling in. 200

:19:06.:19:13.

Christmas puddings from a local company. Meals were complete with a

:19:14.:19:21.

Christmas turkey. We plan what we are going to eat and the nice things

:19:22.:19:26.

that we are going to do and for some families, that not possible. People

:19:27.:19:33.

ought to be able to worry a little less and enjoy themselves a little

:19:34.:19:38.

bit more. Chris and his family will be getting a meal. He is unemployed

:19:39.:19:49.

and a single parent. God bless these guys. They wear Christmas hats and

:19:50.:19:56.

it is bringing a smile to my children's faces. 60,000 people in

:19:57.:20:02.

the country will be relying on food banks over the festive period. This

:20:03.:20:06.

food bank will be doing all it can to make sure no one in their area

:20:07.:20:13.

goes hungry this Christmas. For every top ten Christmas songs,

:20:14.:20:18.

there is a poll of the worse. If you're not a fan of the Christmas

:20:19.:20:22.

tape in shopping centres, maybe we can bring you some chair. Well

:20:23.:20:27.

children at Broadclyst Primary School near Exeter have been in good

:20:28.:20:30.

voice singing a new Christmas song which has been written by a local

:20:31.:20:33.

composer. Johnny Rutherford has been along to hear the latest festive

:20:34.:20:35.

tune. # Gather round, tonight is the

:20:36.:20:52.

night. New music for new voices. The song has been written by local

:20:53.:20:57.

composers from Exeter. I was thinking about my grandchildren and

:20:58.:21:01.

wanted to write a song for them at Christmas. I got together with

:21:02.:21:06.

Hannah and we wrote this little tune. The children loved it, they

:21:07.:21:14.

sang it at their school and the schools have now taken it on.

:21:15.:21:27.

What is refreshing is they have thought about the lyrics. It is

:21:28.:21:37.

really exciting and we are thinking about what is happening but we are

:21:38.:21:40.

also thinking about people that don't get what we get on Christmas

:21:41.:21:48.

Day. It is part of joining hands to sing for love and peace. We should

:21:49.:21:57.

enjoy the time that we get to spend with our family. That so many other

:21:58.:22:04.

Christmas songs that are cheesy and all of the carols that come out so

:22:05.:22:09.

it has been a gift to put this into the carol concert programmes. You

:22:10.:22:19.

might hear more of this song in a future as touted as an American
