to British coastlines, with winds of up to 80 mph. That's all from | :00:00. | :00:07.
I welcome do Friday's BBC Channel Islands news. The top stories: | :00:08. | :00:15.
Forecasters issue a severe weather warning as islanders are told to | :00:16. | :00:20.
prepare for more storm damage. Southerly winds are bashing the | :00:21. | :00:23.
islands. Over the next two tow three hours the gusts of winds could be | :00:24. | :00:28.
around 60 or 70 miles per hour. I'll have all the details, later in the | :00:29. | :00:34.
programme. Calls for a screening programme ` as Guernsey's medical | :00:35. | :00:37.
experts admit up to 90% of chlamydia cases are going undetected. From | :00:38. | :00:40.
this, to this. The radical plans for a hotel destroyed by fire 10 years | :00:41. | :00:44.
ago. And the extraordinary efforts sailors on this warship ` affiliated | :00:45. | :00:47.
to Guernsey ` went to, to say three magic words. But are we Channel | :00:48. | :00:49.
Islanders really a romantic bunch? I'm not really what you call a | :00:50. | :01:01.
romantic person. But this is it once a year. I'll take her out | :01:02. | :01:12.
tonight and we'll enjoy ourselves. People across the island should | :01:13. | :01:15.
prepare themselves for more galeforce winds this evening as | :01:16. | :01:18.
Jersey Met issues yet another severe weather warning. In Jersey, there | :01:19. | :01:21.
could be more flooding and storm damage as strong winds and heavy | :01:22. | :01:24.
rain combine with high tide, which is just about now. In the past few | :01:25. | :01:30.
moments, Jersey Police closed Victoria Avenue and Havre des Pas | :01:31. | :01:33.
and inter`island flights were cancelled. Guernsey's coast roads do | :01:34. | :01:40.
remain open. Jersey's Transport and Technical Service Department are | :01:41. | :01:43.
asking people to secure items like scaffolding, and warning that boat | :01:44. | :01:47.
owners need to take action. Christina Ghidoni has been to | :01:48. | :01:50.
Jersey's harbour for us this evening. Zblts already incredibly | :01:51. | :01:56.
windy down here at the harbour. Sailings to the UK have been | :01:57. | :02:00.
disrupted today and tomorrow. And with winds of up to 70 miles per | :02:01. | :02:04.
hour expected this evening, boat owners are being asked to make sure | :02:05. | :02:09.
their boats are secure. Down here at the harbour with me is the Transport | :02:10. | :02:13.
Technical Services Minister, Deputy Kevin Lewis. What are the main | :02:14. | :02:17.
concerns? . Well, as we speak we have boat owners down here making | :02:18. | :02:22.
sure everything is stowed away and they are batoning down the hatches, | :02:23. | :02:27.
literally. We are going to be quite blowy tonight, force 9, possibly | :02:28. | :02:32.
force 10 gale. There will be over`topping on the sea rolls around | :02:33. | :02:37.
6. 30 P there will be a few spots where the tide will come over. TTF | :02:38. | :02:44.
are on standbi. We have our coastal and forestry team on standby, we | :02:45. | :02:50.
think we'll lose a few trees. If somebody sees a fallen tree or scoff | :02:51. | :02:54.
following what should they do? Contact the police, who will notify | :02:55. | :03:00.
TTS or the land over. In terms of the cost, ?#2b 00,000 has already | :03:01. | :03:05.
been spent on clean`up S there more money in the pot if there's damage | :03:06. | :03:10.
tonight? We have a contingency fund. We are just over ?200,000 at the | :03:11. | :03:14.
moment. We are not out of the woods yet. There are more storms coming | :03:15. | :03:22.
this week. With the strong winds expected tonight. The advice is only | :03:23. | :03:28.
go out if you have to. And you can keep up`to`date on the latest storm | :03:29. | :03:32.
and any damage it causes by listening to BBC Radio Jersey or BBC | :03:33. | :03:35.
Radio Guernsey. And in Jersey the police have set up dedicated numbers | :03:36. | :03:37.
for weather`releated emergencies. Radio Guernsey. And in Jersey the | :03:38. | :03:42.
police have set up dedicated They are 612015 and 612045. New figures | :03:43. | :03:53.
have revealed that 90% of cases of the sexually transmitted infection, | :03:54. | :03:55.
Chlamydia, go undetected in Guernsey. The news has now prompted | :03:56. | :04:00.
calls for a dedicated screening programme in the island for the STI | :04:01. | :04:04.
that can cause infertility and miscarriages. Mike Wilkins reports. | :04:05. | :04:12.
They're the health conditions which few talk openly about, sexually | :04:13. | :04:18.
transmitted infections. The number of cases of chlamydia diagnosed here | :04:19. | :04:23.
is at its highest for more than a decade. Guernsey's annual health | :04:24. | :04:28.
report says it is highly likely 10% of people sexually active between | :04:29. | :04:32.
the age of 16 to 25 are infected with chlamydia. It could be the tip | :04:33. | :04:36.
of the iceberg as many more go undetected. For us, looking at our | :04:37. | :04:41.
local data, we know we're underestimating the number of cases | :04:42. | :04:44.
in Guernsey. If we look at the numbers we diagnose and estimates | :04:45. | :04:48.
our rates of infection, we think we are missing about 75 to 09% of cases | :04:49. | :04:54.
in the 16`25`year`old age group And this is one of the reasons why we do | :04:55. | :04:59.
need a chlamydia screening programme. A sexual health strategy | :05:00. | :05:02.
is currently being drafted. It's hoping to encourage more people to | :05:03. | :05:05.
get themselves checked and it may soon be possible to do a will the | :05:06. | :05:09.
more of it from home. Well I'm in one of the clinic rooms | :05:10. | :05:13.
which for many people is quite an intimidating place. However, as it | :05:14. | :05:17.
currently stands, you can actually take the swab yourself in a toilet | :05:18. | :05:21.
down the corridor and hand it in at the desk. There are plans to roll | :05:22. | :05:24.
this out if the sexual health strategy is approved, so people will | :05:25. | :05:28.
be able to do this at home and then pop it in the post. Poor sexual | :05:29. | :05:33.
health is costly. Treating chlamydia and its knock`on effects costs the | :05:34. | :05:39.
island around ?100,000 a year. The health and social services | :05:40. | :05:41.
department says it will consider funding a screening programme, but | :05:42. | :05:44.
only once the sexual health strategy has been finalised. So, for now | :05:45. | :05:49.
sexually tramsmitted infections remain a significant issue for | :05:50. | :05:56.
Guernsey. Investigations into safeguardk in Jersey's Anglican | :05:57. | :06:00.
Church have cost nearly ?200,00 . The figure was revealed at the | :06:01. | :06:03.
General Synod this he can would ed the Church of England and the | :06:04. | :06:07.
Diocese of Win chest will split the cost. It's been more than ten years | :06:08. | :06:13.
since fire destroyed the Idlerocks Hotel on Gurney's south coast. Today | :06:14. | :06:18.
plans were revealed to transform the site into a five`star hotel. | :06:19. | :06:23.
Designed to be eco`friend li, it's architects behind the scheme claim | :06:24. | :06:29.
it could be the competition to claim the accolade of the channel island's | :06:30. | :06:37.
Best hoe. He September 2003, the hotel was destroyed by a fire. | :06:38. | :06:41.
Two`thirds of the roof collapsed. The bad luck didn't end there, | :06:42. | :06:46.
though. In 2012, another major fire broke out, causing the building to | :06:47. | :06:51.
be deemed unsafe and it was cordoned off to the public. | :06:52. | :06:56.
Burnt, neglected and crumbling, the Idlerocks Hotel has become an | :06:57. | :07:01.
eyesore but if this man is agreed t could be transformed. Permission was | :07:02. | :07:06.
granted back in 2012, for the ownsers to demolish the remains of | :07:07. | :07:10.
the burntout building and an architectural firm has now submitted | :07:11. | :07:14.
plans to transform the site into a five`star hotel. | :07:15. | :07:18.
This is a fantastic opportunity I think for Guernsey, in building a | :07:19. | :07:23.
tourism destination, and hotel. Of really high quality. | :07:24. | :07:28.
The open`planning meeting, we will also do a presentation, and it will | :07:29. | :07:32.
be at that point that the planning board will make the decision. The | :07:33. | :07:36.
new hotel is designed to blend into the natural environ mentd and where | :07:37. | :07:40.
possible, be eco`friendly. Introducing the green rooms and | :07:41. | :07:44.
walls, improves the bio`diverse yited of our site which offsets the | :07:45. | :07:48.
build and hotel itself. The decision is now in the hands of the environ | :07:49. | :07:53.
Environment Department and if the design is approved, work will take | :07:54. | :07:56.
two years and the project in total will cost in the region of ?20 | :07:57. | :08:13.
million. A Jersey`based physiotherapist heads to Sochi today | :08:14. | :08:16.
to work with the USA Men's Alpine Ski Team. Paul Frankham has spent | :08:17. | :08:20.
several years working with the team and he will decide who's fit enough | :08:21. | :08:24.
to race and who'll have to stay off the slopes during the Winter | :08:25. | :08:27.
Olympics. The team have remained in Europe for training until today | :08:28. | :08:30.
Excited just to go to Russia, you know. It is a new place for me. I | :08:31. | :08:33.
haven't been there. It is an interesting location down on the | :08:34. | :08:35.
coast of the Black Sea down there in the South. It is the Olympic Games. | :08:36. | :08:38.
The Olympic Games is the biggest and the best in sport. It's about as | :08:39. | :08:41.
good as it gets. I have grown up being so interested in sport, and to | :08:42. | :08:47.
be there in that intense environment is fantastic. I can't wait. | :08:48. | :08:52.
Good luck to Paul. David is with us. Evening. Here we go again, it seems. | :08:53. | :09:00.
Yes, but hopefully this will be quite the last one for a while, not | :09:01. | :09:10.
to say we won't see areas of deep pressure. At the moment, it is a | :09:11. | :09:13.
southerly galeforce wind. It'll veer round to become more south westerly. | :09:14. | :09:18.
Into the weekend, it is much brighter. The winds will drop, it | :09:19. | :09:21.
will be drier and yes, we will see sunshine. For the moment, we have | :09:22. | :09:25.
the threat of the gusts of winds up to around 60 to 70 miles per hour. | :09:26. | :09:29.
That will last until midnight. Gradually, ever so slowly, the gales | :09:30. | :09:36.
will drop. This is the culprit, this area of low pressure. It is slowly | :09:37. | :09:40.
moving away from us. Eventually it'll begin to ease the winds. The | :09:41. | :09:43.
winds will become more westerly through the day tomorrow. Then the | :09:44. | :09:47.
North westerly as we move into the evening. Sunday, we are diveen areas | :09:48. | :09:52.
of low pressure. With any luck, it is a chance it clear up some | :09:53. | :09:56.
sunshine, a chance of a few showersth dotted around. The shower | :09:57. | :10:00.
activity we have overnight will drop hefty bursts of rain every now and | :10:01. | :10:04.
then. The showers more isolated towards down to. Which gives us a | :10:05. | :10:08.
start it the day at least with some sunny spells. There may well be a | :10:09. | :10:11.
few showers around. They'll continue into the afternoon but all day, | :10:12. | :10:14.
through the day tomorrow, those winds will continue to drop, with a | :10:15. | :10:19.
top temperature of around nine or ten. | :10:20. | :10:21.
On it the forecast for the coastal waters. Lively overnight: | :10:22. | :10:31.
Then the times of high water, the important ones: | :10:32. | :10:40.
The winds are from a different direction tomorrow. For surfers | :10:41. | :10:47.
pretty big waves. Three to five feet and messy for most coastal | :10:48. | :10:50.
locations. The forecast, as we head into next week, is still quite | :10:51. | :10:55.
unsettled but you will note that the winds aren't anywhere as strong | :10:56. | :10:58.
Some sunny spells possible on Sunday and a small chance of a few showers | :10:59. | :11:03.
dotted around. There is some rain in the forecast as we move into Monday. | :11:04. | :11:07.
But it is light and patchy and swhid nt see too much. On Tuesday, apart | :11:08. | :11:11.
from a few showers, a mainly fine day with sunny spells. Actually it | :11:12. | :11:15.
improves next week. We just have to get through this really windy spell | :11:16. | :11:18.
of weather overnight and into tomorrow. Last night I promised you | :11:19. | :11:32.
the word for windy in Thai: HE SAYS THE WORD | :11:33. | :11:40.
You can't fail to have noticed that it's Valentine's Day, so what do you | :11:41. | :11:44.
do if you're far from your loved one? Well, the crew aboard | :11:45. | :11:48.
Guernsey's affiliated Royal Navy ship, HMS Daring, found a way to | :11:49. | :11:51.
send that special message. They ve been deployed for the last nine | :11:52. | :11:55.
months, so arranged themselves on the flight deck spelling out the | :11:56. | :11:58.
words, "I love you" for an aerial photograph. Guernseyman, | :11:59. | :12:00.
Sub`Lieutenant Max Barber, was part of it. He spoke to BBC Radio | :12:01. | :12:03.
Guernsey earlier IT WAS QUITE DIFFICULT. WE HAD THE HELICOPTER UP | :12:04. | :12:06.
FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES TRYING IT TAKE THE PHOTOGRAPH. BUT THE SHIP'S | :12:07. | :12:08.
COMPANY IS VERY EASY TO ORGANISE. WE drew it out on paper. | :12:09. | :12:11.
I was been in the Navy for two`and`a`half years. I managed to | :12:12. | :12:16.
spend three Valentine's day away. I have been dodging it a while. You | :12:17. | :12:20.
get used to it but miss your loveds ones more on days like this. Are we | :12:21. | :12:24.
a romantic bunch? We'll leave you now with some warm`hearted thoughts | :12:25. | :12:30.
from St Helier for thiscold winter's night. For now, goodbye. See you | :12:31. | :12:38.
soon. I'm not what you called a romantic person. This is it, once a | :12:39. | :12:42.
year, I do this, I take her out tonight and we'll enjoy so you | :12:43. | :12:48.
areselves. `` ourselves. It's nice, my husband bought me a | :12:49. | :12:53.
necklace. I don't enjoy it. But it is a an excuse to have a night in | :12:54. | :12:58.
and a Chinese. I is love Valentine's day. It is a shame the men aren t | :12:59. | :13:05.
organised. St Valentine's day is the peak of romanticism for me. Rowses. | :13:06. | :13:11.
It is a cliche. I'm single on Valentine's day. Not that I care. I | :13:12. | :13:15.
feel like it is Valentine's day every day to be honest with my | :13:16. | :13:19.
boyfriend. I don't think you should wait. | :13:20. | :13:20.
at College Road primary School, the Plymouth Raiders are spreading the | :13:21. | :17:58.
word that basketball is the sport to take up, but how difficult will that | :17:59. | :18:06.
be now? It does not queue in terms of what we are trying to build. We | :18:07. | :18:09.
have the Academy and University. There are lots dash`macro of | :18:10. | :18:27.
positives. Did you get lots of tips? I did. What makes it special | :18:28. | :18:37.
for you? You get to be with your friends and you get to be healthy | :18:38. | :18:44.
for life. Is it is a good sport? Yes! | :18:45. | :18:49.
The next generation of Raiders fans ending that report by Dave Gibbins. | :18:50. | :18:52.
And the big advantage for basketball in this weather is that's not | :18:53. | :18:56.
affected by it, so their match against Glasgow Rocks will go ahead | :18:57. | :19:07.
tomorrow night at the Pavilions. Now the weather may not be a | :19:08. | :19:11.
gardener's delight at the moment, but you may be surprised to hear | :19:12. | :19:14.
that hundreds of flowers are already in bloom. Every year gardeners at | :19:15. | :19:17.
National Trust properties count up the number of blooms and compare | :19:18. | :19:20.
them to the previous year. Both Saltram ,near Plymouth and | :19:21. | :19:23.
Trelissick near Truro have seen increases in the number in flower | :19:24. | :19:26.
this February, but there's been a decline at Cothele in Cornwall. | :19:27. | :19:29.
Although as Spotlight's Janine Jansen has been finding out, it's | :19:30. | :19:31.
still a beautiful early spring garden. It is a romantic time of | :19:32. | :19:35.
year and a time to think of flowers. Every year The National Trust sends | :19:36. | :19:37.
out its gardeners to record how many event types of flowers are blooming. | :19:38. | :19:40.
Here at Cothele, many are blooming, but the numbers are down. We have | :19:41. | :19:42.
noticed in the last few days, certainly since Monday, the crocuses | :19:43. | :19:46.
were coming through, showing a little bit of colour. When the sun | :19:47. | :19:51.
does come out, it is actually really warm. Talking to some of the other | :19:52. | :19:55.
head gardeners, they are saying the same thing. The flower count is down | :19:56. | :20:00.
on last year, but there is a lot on this showing around the gardens. | :20:01. | :20:07.
They have been just three frosts, but sunlight levels have been low | :20:08. | :20:10.
and the ground is saturated and certainly Cothele has not escaped | :20:11. | :20:16.
the storms. We have lost three or four relatively large trees that | :20:17. | :20:30.
have been fairly significant. This has been flowering well for several | :20:31. | :20:35.
weeks. The worry is that if we have the frost, they will be damaged. | :20:36. | :20:40.
That's why we are watching the oncoming weather, but there are | :20:41. | :20:51.
flowers to calm dash`macro to come. There is a survey being carried out | :20:52. | :20:58.
on social media to find out the most popular flower. First is the dream | :20:59. | :21:09.
rose, secondly the daffodil and is the snowdrop is third. The National | :21:10. | :21:12.
Trust opens its gardens to the public tomorrow. | :21:13. | :21:20.
Well it's Valentine's Day today and Janine mentioned flowers, romance | :21:21. | :21:23.
and the weather in her report there. So put it all together and you get | :21:24. | :21:27.
our next story. Yes, as the wind picked up and the rain came down on | :21:28. | :21:31.
this day dedicated to love, a bride braved the great outdoors and took | :21:32. | :21:49.
off for her wedding. Call sounds, no stranger to storms. Dash`macro Orson | :21:50. | :21:58.
's. The storms make it a little bit more romantic. We are happy and we | :21:59. | :22:02.
want to get married. The weather just adds a bit of adventure to the | :22:03. | :22:07.
day. The weather did not stop the bride`to`be waking the short walk to | :22:08. | :22:11.
the church. Whilst the couple tied the knot, the wind and waves were | :22:12. | :22:17.
loud enough to drown out any wedding bells. The bride and groom emerged | :22:18. | :22:24.
happily married. Memorable, adventurous. It was brilliant. It is | :22:25. | :22:30.
a day everyone will remember. A really good day. There will be no | :22:31. | :22:34.
wedding photographs on the beach today. As for the honeymoon, they | :22:35. | :22:42.
are going to wait until the summer. Our top story tonight is of course | :22:43. | :22:46.
the weather and an amber alert for wind is in place as well as severe | :22:47. | :22:53.
flood warnings. There are no trains in or out of Cornwall to night. That | :22:54. | :22:57.
is because of flood damage. And these pictures of Polish workers | :22:58. | :23:04.
sent by our cameraman. The seas are very, very high. Conditions are very | :23:05. | :23:19.
rough tonight. Let's get the forecast. Those pictures speak | :23:20. | :23:25.
volumes about how strong the winds are and how well this season. I have | :23:26. | :23:34.
been monitoring the boys that are out of seeing. The one off Brittany | :23:35. | :23:39.
had waves at nine o'clock this morning of around 20 feet. At the | :23:40. | :23:47.
moment they are above 45 feet. Perhaps not as large as that through | :23:48. | :23:50.
the English Channel, but with a southerly winds coming through, it | :23:51. | :24:00.
is possible. The highest gusts of wind we have seen so far as being | :24:01. | :24:07.
just under 80 mph. There will be further showers tonight. The wind | :24:08. | :24:14.
and shall activity will ease down. Let us go to the Isles of Scilly and | :24:15. | :24:19.
here in the old town beach, these ways that have been coming on shore | :24:20. | :24:29.
have been crashing over the houses. Expect more of the same. We still | :24:30. | :24:33.
have an ample warning, as we have just said, about the wind. Slowly | :24:34. | :24:41.
though, they will is later tonight. The culprit is an area of low | :24:42. | :24:47.
pressure that has been whipping up the wind. The arrows will change | :24:48. | :24:52.
direction during the night and will become a bit more westerly. There | :24:53. | :25:02.
are several severe flood warnings as well as multiple flood warnings | :25:03. | :25:06.
along the coastline and inland. There is the number you need to | :25:07. | :25:18.
call. That us look at the detail in the broader perspective because with | :25:19. | :25:20.
the area of low pressure across southern island, it will move | :25:21. | :25:25.
steadily during the night. It will move up towards the Northey and the | :25:26. | :25:30.
winds will drop. As we move through tomorrow night and into Sunday, we | :25:31. | :25:36.
have a ridge of high pressure coming other way. If anything, a quiet | :25:37. | :25:40.
night on Saturday and the winds could be light enough for a touch of | :25:41. | :25:49.
frost. This area of the low pressure is not the same animal. The winds | :25:50. | :25:58.
will not be as heavy and next week the low pressure will not be as | :25:59. | :26:03.
vicious. The showers to night are lively and the winds are gusty. | :26:04. | :26:07.
Bearing more westerly as the night progresses. Overnight temperatures | :26:08. | :26:12.
five or six degrees for most of us. Tomorrow morning clear spells in | :26:13. | :26:18.
between the showers and we should get some sunshine. There may be the | :26:19. | :26:26.
odd shower. By the time we get to the end of the day, look at that | :26:27. | :26:31.
dash no rain, largely clear skies, lighter winds and actually quite a | :26:32. | :26:38.
pleasant evening and a calm night,. Those are the temperatures we can | :26:39. | :26:43.
see generally. We might get to 10 degrees. As we move out to sea, the | :26:44. | :26:51.
forecast is quite lively. Across the answer silly we will have sales to | :26:52. | :26:58.
start with and the winds will drop. For those worried about the | :26:59. | :27:01.
coastline, these are the important times of high water. And some big | :27:02. | :27:14.
waves around as well. Dangerous conditions at sea. Quick look at the | :27:15. | :27:26.
coastal waters. To take care and have a good evening. It is a grim | :27:27. | :27:34.
picture out there tonight. Don't forget BBC Radio Devon and BBC Radio | :27:35. | :27:41.
Cornwall are on air tonight from seven o'clock with a special | :27:42. | :27:45.
programme. Have a great weekend. | :27:46. | :27:47. |
