The battle is not over ` unions vow me. | :00:07. | :00:08.
The battle is not over ` unions vow to fight on in their dispute with | :00:09. | :00:11.
Condor after two weeks of strike action by sailors in France. But | :00:12. | :00:24.
will Condor listen? We don't recognise the advice they had from | :00:25. | :00:32.
the union. We don't recognise that organisation and therefore any point | :00:33. | :00:38.
they have, we would suggest they provide to our company. | :00:39. | :00:41.
Also, Jersey experiences a record fall in house prices, but can | :00:42. | :00:48.
Islanders really afford to buy? Find out how you can knit your way into a | :00:49. | :00:50.
piece of art. This battle is not over. That's the | :00:51. | :01:02.
message from unions tonight about the dispute with Condor Ferries over | :01:03. | :01:07.
workers rights. A two`week strike, which halted services between the | :01:08. | :01:09.
Channel Islands and St Malo, was called off yesterday, after Condor | :01:10. | :01:13.
said it had agreed to offer the French sailors a better insurance | :01:14. | :01:18.
package. But the International Transport Workers Federation, who | :01:19. | :01:20.
organised the industrial action said today that they were taking | :01:21. | :01:23.
legal action as Condor was 'impossible to negotiate with'. | :01:24. | :01:29.
Well, as the war of words intensifies, passengers have finally | :01:30. | :01:33.
been arriving back in the Islands. Penny Elderfield reports: A short | :01:34. | :01:38.
wait at St Malo harbour this morning is nothing for these passengers | :01:39. | :01:41.
who've been waiting for two weeks to get to Jersey. | :01:42. | :01:49.
I haven't been able to get the jersey for the past two weeks. First | :01:50. | :01:53.
it was the weather and then the strikes. It was a forced holiday. We | :01:54. | :02:01.
had a trip planned for St Valentine's Day. We are a bit | :02:02. | :02:06.
unhappy and not best pleased. And finally, at around 10am French time, | :02:07. | :02:10.
the Condor Rapide bid au revoir to France, and bonjour to St Helier, | :02:11. | :02:13.
meaning the ferry link to France is back in time for the school | :02:14. | :02:17.
holidays. And in one case, a family emergency. I have come over | :02:18. | :02:25.
particularly for the birth of my first grandchild. My daughter`in`law | :02:26. | :02:32.
will have her baby at lunchtime I was desperately hoping it would be | :02:33. | :02:37.
back on and somebody is looking after me. Relief for passengers to | :02:38. | :02:41.
get back on board here, and relief for Condor that the striking crew | :02:42. | :02:44.
that have been on here for 14 days are no longer commandeering it. This | :02:45. | :02:48.
was where the dozen or so crew members lived whilst on board, | :02:49. | :02:51.
creating sleeping quarters here and even having a TV to watch the | :02:52. | :02:54.
Olympics. But now it's back to normality. And back in Guernsey | :02:55. | :02:58.
albeit a bit too late for those who had their half term plans disrupted. | :02:59. | :03:05.
And in fact many arriving today were simply day`trippers taking advantage | :03:06. | :03:08.
of the offer of a free trip. The boat may be moving again, but it | :03:09. | :03:11.
looks like relations between Condor and the union still have some way to | :03:12. | :03:16.
go. We have two look at some legal beings, because they are not in | :03:17. | :03:23.
compliance with the law, so it is not possible to access that. We need | :03:24. | :03:30.
to fight against the company to get what we want. It is important to put | :03:31. | :03:35.
this behind us and work together. We need to learn from the issues and we | :03:36. | :03:39.
have learned a few things already. We should mention that we don't | :03:40. | :03:45.
recognise the advice they had from the ITF union. We don't recognise | :03:46. | :03:49.
that organisation and therefore any comments they have not recognised. | :03:50. | :03:57.
ITF is ruling out further strike action at the moment, as it says | :03:58. | :04:00.
passengers have suffered enough And as the dispute moves on to the next | :04:01. | :04:03.
level, Condors' customers will be hoping they're left out of it. | :04:04. | :04:10.
Smoking in cars carrying children in Jersey should be banned, according | :04:11. | :04:13.
to the results of a public consultation. Almost eight out of | :04:14. | :04:17.
ten people who responded said they'd support a law banning it. There was | :04:18. | :04:21.
also support for making children's playgrounds smoke`free. The health | :04:22. | :04:23.
authorities have welcomed the findings, which will be used to form | :04:24. | :04:27.
the States' next Tobacco Strategy. Electricity prices in Jersey are | :04:28. | :04:33.
going up by 1.5% from April. It s to cover the costs of generating power | :04:34. | :04:36.
on the island. Jersey Electricity has been using the power station at | :04:37. | :04:40.
La Colette since last April, when an undersea cable from France was lost. | :04:41. | :04:51.
Hundreds of people gathered in Jersey this morning for a memorial | :04:52. | :04:54.
service for the former Lieutenant Governor Sir Michael Wilkes. Sir | :04:55. | :04:57.
Michael, who was the Queen's representative in the island between | :04:58. | :05:00.
1995 and 2000, died from cancer last autumn. The current LG, Sir John | :05:01. | :05:03.
McColl, was among the congregation at St Thomas' church. | :05:04. | :05:05.
Jersey is experiencing a record period of falling house prices, | :05:06. | :05:08.
according to new official figures. Since the last peak in 2009, average | :05:09. | :05:14.
prices have dropped about 6%. The average price of ?375,000 for a two | :05:15. | :05:17.
bedroom house last year was the lowest recorded since 2007. It's the | :05:18. | :05:24.
longest sustained fall in 30 years. A little earlier I spoke to Roger | :05:25. | :05:28.
Trower from Broadlands Estate Agents to find out who are the winners and | :05:29. | :05:34.
losers from this situation. That purchases are the winners. Not all | :05:35. | :05:40.
part of the markets have fallen back, but there are parts where they | :05:41. | :05:43.
were overcooked and they have come back to us, but not to the extent | :05:44. | :05:51.
that has been said with regard to the statistics. I beat you can prove | :05:52. | :05:56.
different things with the numbers. We have seen a falling off prices. | :05:57. | :06:06.
Can people afford to buy? We have had a lot of supply into the | :06:07. | :06:12.
market. Young people are looking to come into that level and should be | :06:13. | :06:16.
able to buy providing their family members help with deposits. The | :06:17. | :06:24.
banks are proven to be helpful. The States Housing Deposit Scheme gave | :06:25. | :06:27.
some people interest free loans to help them. What impact has that had? | :06:28. | :06:33.
It has had some, but the criteria for people to take up that deposit | :06:34. | :06:40.
scheme is quite tough. What we have always said is that when you're | :06:41. | :06:45.
buying a low price house, you want to buy it for the right money. If | :06:46. | :06:51.
people can get help to get on the ladder, all very well. You should | :06:52. | :06:58.
buy a home for a long time, not just for that reason to not make money. | :06:59. | :07:02.
Hopefully more and more people are looking at that lower price and | :07:03. | :07:06.
saying that is the house for the next ten years. What more needs to | :07:07. | :07:14.
be done? More help from the state. I would like to see the lower end of | :07:15. | :07:19.
duty for first time buyers, which would help enormously. | :07:20. | :07:27.
You're watching the BBC in the Channel Islands. Later in Spotlight | :07:28. | :07:30.
with Justin and Clare, find out why more than 1000 pasties have been | :07:31. | :07:33.
sent from Cornwall to flood hit Somerset Next. | :07:34. | :07:41.
Say hello to my little friend! Can you see him? We have not thought of | :07:42. | :07:45.
a name yet. This little prawn has been knitted for us by volunteers at | :07:46. | :07:49.
Jersey's Arts Centre. They're hoping to make thousands of knitted sea | :07:50. | :07:52.
creatures like this to form a soft sculpture at the Maritime Museum. | :07:53. | :07:56.
And they're calling on knitters and crocheters across the island to | :07:57. | :08:00.
help! Louise Walter went, needles in hand, to find out more. | :08:01. | :08:09.
It's a hobby enjoying a resurgence, and groups get together across | :08:10. | :08:20.
Jersey to chat, needles in hand But this is no ordinary knit and natter. | :08:21. | :08:24.
People here are making things to go into a permanent exhibition at the | :08:25. | :08:29.
maritime museum. And they're knitting all sea creatures great and | :08:30. | :08:39.
small. It is a fish as you can see, but I think it may grow into a | :08:40. | :08:52.
mackerel. You have two knitted from the side and you make it eventually. | :08:53. | :08:57.
But they need thousands of creatures to complete the knitted and | :08:58. | :09:00.
crotcheted reef. And with the museum opening at the start of April, the | :09:01. | :09:04.
Arts Centre needs as many hands on deck as possible, regardless of | :09:05. | :09:12.
skill level. We have been trying to contact as many knitters and people | :09:13. | :09:16.
who would like to be involved. We have ideas which are easy and some | :09:17. | :09:21.
abysmal, located. This lobster has been made by one of our knitters `` | :09:22. | :09:34.
some more complicated. I will feel happier when we are showered with | :09:35. | :09:43.
fish. If you fancy creating a creature to add to this scene, | :09:44. | :09:46.
there's free patterns and wool available at the arts centre. And if | :09:47. | :09:49.
you want to learn knitting and crotchet there's even a free event | :09:50. | :09:58.
to learn the skills. We had much fun with the knitters. When you knitting | :09:59. | :10:17.
one? I am not at admitting. `` knitting. We have had a bit of | :10:18. | :10:27.
sunshine today. It will be similar tomorrow. There is a bit of a | :10:28. | :10:31.
breeze. There will be showers and sunshine. Low pressure is in charge. | :10:32. | :10:38.
It is a long way from us. It is in the north of the island. One little | :10:39. | :10:45.
weather system we are keeping a close eye on. This is midday | :10:46. | :10:52.
tomorrow and it trickles past is overnight into the early hours of | :10:53. | :10:57.
Saturday morning. It could give some heavy rain with the risk of thunder. | :10:58. | :11:06.
The Rossum quite heavy showers this evening. This will die down. `` | :11:07. | :11:17.
there are. Every now and then we will get some sunshine. It is a | :11:18. | :11:23.
breezy day. Winds from the South West and cold a date than today Top | :11:24. | :11:29.
temperature of eight degrees. Let's look at the coastal waters. Force | :11:30. | :11:35.
five or six, and a drop in the second part of the day. These are | :11:36. | :11:41.
the times of high water. The surfers, the waves are not too | :11:42. | :12:05.
big `` for. For most of Saturday it is a reasonable day. Winds from the | :12:06. | :12:08.
South West and temperatures of 10 degrees. Rain overnight on Sunday. | :12:09. | :12:18.
That is it from now. support the North Devon Hospice | :12:19. | :12:27.
The annual sale of Dartmoor ponies at Tavistock has been a traditional | :12:28. | :12:30.
event for centuries. Now though, it's coming to an end. The town's | :12:31. | :12:38.
livestock market has taken the decision not to hold the sale in | :12:39. | :12:42.
October because it's no longer financially viable. A tradition | :12:43. | :12:46.
which has been taking place on Dartmoor for hundreds of years but | :12:47. | :12:50.
in recent times, the annual pony sale has been losing money rather | :12:51. | :12:55.
than making it. Lastly, only 14 goals were sold out of nearly 100. | :12:56. | :13:02.
It is a big decision, and it is not what we have come to easily. It is | :13:03. | :13:07.
said that history is finished in terms of ponies in the market. | :13:08. | :13:13.
Farmers like Phil are allowed to keep a certain number of ponies. | :13:14. | :13:19.
Those that can't be returned are sold at Tavistock. His family have | :13:20. | :13:22.
done this for generations but with this news, he feels it might be time | :13:23. | :13:28.
to stop keeping them altogether. There is no money in them at all. | :13:29. | :13:33.
The reason we're keeping them, my dad had them and his dad had a few, | :13:34. | :13:38.
as soon as these are gone, we have to seriously think about getting | :13:39. | :13:43.
them to a more manageable number or losing them altogether. Eight years | :13:44. | :13:49.
ago, farmers like Phil were getting around ?75 each for false like this. | :13:50. | :13:56.
Lastly, he only got ?10 each for the two resold. Charlotte has spent her | :13:57. | :14:02.
lifetime trying to save the Dartmoor fuel pony. Every year hundreds are | :14:03. | :14:05.
slaughtered because there is no market for them. She fears the loss | :14:06. | :14:10.
of the sale will be to fewer ponies on the moor. It is devastating. I | :14:11. | :14:16.
think pony herders themselves are wondering, where will it go from | :14:17. | :14:21.
here? It is part of our heritage. We used to be a marketing virtually | :14:22. | :14:25.
every big town, we were down to two and now we are down to one. This | :14:26. | :14:30.
side of the moor is no way of getting those ponies any more. She | :14:31. | :14:37.
is still waiting to see if the last remaining sale will take place this | :14:38. | :14:41.
year. The Hospice in North Devon says it | :14:42. | :14:44.
couldn't survive without its volunteers. There are around 130 | :14:45. | :14:48.
paid staff, but more than 500 volunteers who do a wide range of | :14:49. | :14:54.
jobs. The North Devon Hospice is celebrating its 30th birthday and | :14:55. | :14:57.
one of its major themes for the year is thanking the people who do so | :14:58. | :15:01.
much to help make it work. In the fourth of her series, our North | :15:02. | :15:04.
Devon reporter, Andrea Ormsby, looks at the work of one volunteer. This | :15:05. | :15:14.
man retired ten years ago. He had been the lorry driver and now he is | :15:15. | :15:17.
driving again, as a volunteer for North Devon Hospice. It certainly | :15:18. | :15:26.
helps me with my retirement. He drives patients to and from home for | :15:27. | :15:31.
outpatient visits. I spend a lot of time with the patients in the car, | :15:32. | :15:38.
and also in the hospice. There is no end of subjects that we talk about. | :15:39. | :15:42.
Whether it is to do with politics, the weather, or our own families, | :15:43. | :15:50.
really. We really become a part of their families. To begin with, he | :15:51. | :15:57.
was worried they wouldn't cope. Occasionally it is depressing but | :15:58. | :16:02.
you must accept that as part of the job. It's just great pleasure to be | :16:03. | :16:08.
able to help somebody through their illness and one of the greatest joys | :16:09. | :16:12.
I find doing this job is just hearing that people laugh when they | :16:13. | :16:18.
are in the daycare unit. When you hear them laughing so much, you know | :16:19. | :16:27.
that what you're doing is right. Meeting people who have honed their | :16:28. | :16:30.
skills of what quality`of`life they have left, it teaches you a lot. I | :16:31. | :16:36.
can see the change in philosophy of life. Cyril doesn't just drive for | :16:37. | :16:45.
the hospice, he is one available in tears who do gardening. I know the | :16:46. | :16:54.
gardening gives a lot of fish to our patients, on a nice sunny day like | :16:55. | :17:04.
today, they can seal the flowers `` see all the flowers. Smell the | :17:05. | :17:08.
pollen. Sometimes we get bees, butterflies. It also gives them a | :17:09. | :17:14.
great pleasure. The pleasure I get in gardening obviously gives the | :17:15. | :17:19.
patient is much pleasure as I get. In this 30th birthday year, there is | :17:20. | :17:22.
a big thank you to everyone who does so much to help. Our theme for 30th | :17:23. | :17:30.
anniversary is thanks to you. A plethora of our community, the | :17:31. | :17:35.
staff, it is a big chance to say thanks to all our volunteers. | :17:36. | :17:40.
Without them, we wouldn't be able to operate. Sometimes I feel a bit | :17:41. | :17:46.
selfish mind doing it because it's helping me as much as it's helping | :17:47. | :17:51.
the patients. Because I often say to my self, what would I be doing? I | :17:52. | :17:55.
would be set at home, bored to tears. Of all the jobs I have done, | :17:56. | :18:01.
to find the best job I have done, I don't get paid for, what can you | :18:02. | :18:08.
say? It's great. The Cyril, the fear of retirement has been replaced by | :18:09. | :18:18.
the fulfilment of volunteering. And tomorrow in the final part of | :18:19. | :18:22.
her series, Andrea's been to meet a family who were helped through the | :18:23. | :18:26.
loss of a loved one, by the North Devon Hospice. | :18:27. | :18:28.
It was a big night for the south`west at the BBC Radio two Folk | :18:29. | :18:32.
Awards at the Royal Albert Hall last night. Folk superband, The Full | :18:33. | :18:35.
English, which features Seth Lakeman, won Best Group and Best | :18:36. | :18:38.
Album, while Devon's Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin scooped the Award | :18:39. | :18:46.
for best duo. Phillip Henry, Hannah Martin and | :18:47. | :18:49.
Seth Lakeman have all been regular guests on John Govier's Saturday | :18:50. | :18:55.
Show on BBC Radio Devon. Join him for more live performances from | :18:56. | :18:58.
local musicians this Saturday from 9am ` 1pm. Or listen on the BBC | :18:59. | :19:01.
iPlayer. Meanwhile, Plymouth musician Chris | :19:02. | :19:04.
Wood has been amongst the winners at the BRIT Awards last Night. His band | :19:05. | :19:07.
Bastille won best UK breakthrough act at the annual award ceremony. | :19:08. | :19:13.
And you can catch up with him on Saturday when he drums home his | :19:14. | :19:16.
support for Plymouth Argyle by making his debut as a guest in the | :19:17. | :19:19.
commentary box, that's alongside BBC Radio Devon's Gordon Sparks. | :19:20. | :19:26.
Now our reporter John Henderson is spending this week travelling the | :19:27. | :19:30.
Spotlight region to see the impact of the recent storms. Coastal | :19:31. | :19:33.
communities from the far west of Cornwall through to Dorset suffered | :19:34. | :19:36.
major damage following weeks of extreme weather. John's journey | :19:37. | :19:41.
started on Monday in Lamorna Cove. Today he's moved from South Devon up | :19:42. | :19:45.
to the village of Bucks Mills in North Devon. It feels like a long | :19:46. | :19:54.
way from anywhere but there moments where this is the reason 40,000 | :19:55. | :20:02.
people visit every year. This is lovely. I understand you are going | :20:03. | :20:05.
to show me something that isn't so nice. Indeed. Now they would have a | :20:06. | :20:12.
job getting onto the beach. The grade two listed slipway has gone. | :20:13. | :20:23.
Perfectly safe? The people in this tiny community e`mail the BBC about | :20:24. | :20:29.
the need to nominate the slipway and the historic lime kilns after they | :20:30. | :20:35.
were destroyed by storms. It has been unprecedented in terms of the | :20:36. | :20:40.
storm damage, but of course, it has happened before and the community | :20:41. | :20:43.
comes together as it has now and it will get rebuilt. This is the | :20:44. | :20:48.
beginning of the slipway commie conceive of the storm damage has | :20:49. | :20:53.
done over my shoulder. That wall is looking pretty precarious. From the | :20:54. | :20:59.
Heritage site to a holiday resort, one equally affected by wild | :21:00. | :21:05.
weather. Crazy golf at West Westwood home is a crazy assault course. John | :21:06. | :21:16.
Martin's nephew runs a tourist attraction, quite when it will | :21:17. | :21:19.
welcome back punters and putters St Clair. John has got enough to do | :21:20. | :21:23.
pull string the differences outside his own business, hammered by last | :21:24. | :21:30.
week's wave. It will be back up and running, it is a mammoth task to get | :21:31. | :21:36.
it ready. Easter we could probably get the go`karts ready but the | :21:37. | :21:40.
extreme crazy golf, as you call it, we don't know about that. For many | :21:41. | :21:46.
communities in North Devon and across the south`west, the race is | :21:47. | :21:50.
on to bolster their damaged sea defences before the next high tides | :21:51. | :22:10.
in March. A hundred years ago the humble pasty | :22:11. | :22:13.
kept Cornish tin miners going underground. These day they are a | :22:14. | :22:16.
handy lunchtime feast and now they are being used the feed the hundreds | :22:17. | :22:20.
of people trying to fight the flood waters in Somerset. More than 1,000 | :22:21. | :22:23.
pasties have been sent from Cornwall to Somerset ` branded as' Pasty | :22:24. | :22:27.
Aid'. The idea was the brainwave of a Cornish woman who now lives on the | :22:28. | :22:33.
Somerset levels. At this bakery, they are queueing for their lunch. | :22:34. | :22:36.
The pasties here are popular with the local people and visitors. But | :22:37. | :22:41.
not all these pasties are being bought and sold locally. Some of | :22:42. | :22:46.
them are going up to Somerset as Pasty Aid. This family run bakery is | :22:47. | :22:52.
one of the number who have sent pasties to the Somerset Levels, an | :22:53. | :22:55.
area that has been under floodwater four weeks. Not meals on wheels but | :22:56. | :23:06.
breakfast in a basket. Do you want your hot pasty? You are most | :23:07. | :23:10.
welcome! Compliments of Sarah, bless her heart! Thanks very much! Lovely | :23:11. | :23:21.
job! Well done. Take care. This is the woman who has made it all | :23:22. | :23:25.
happen. Sarah comes from Cornwall but now lives in Somerset. She rang | :23:26. | :23:29.
pasty makers in Cornwall who are more than happy to help. There is | :23:30. | :23:36.
not much I can do out here, I am a mum at home. I can make pasties and | :23:37. | :23:44.
my friends are happy to make them. It's really nice just to help | :23:45. | :23:49.
people. Plus, we have had lots of our own customers go on the strength | :23:50. | :23:54.
of this, people phoning up and saying, can I donate ?50 for as many | :23:55. | :24:01.
pasties as that will buy? So we ascended up more than the original | :24:02. | :24:08.
120. For the flood victims and those trying to help them, these are more | :24:09. | :24:12.
than much`needed warm food, they are a gesture of goodwill from Cornwall. | :24:13. | :24:20.
Time for the weather. Before I give it a forecast, I'm | :24:21. | :24:30.
just going to go back over how wet the winter has been so far. This is | :24:31. | :24:37.
more official statistics, it is now officially the wettest winter ever, | :24:38. | :24:43.
683 millimetres of rain, the average we have seen. The previous wet | :24:44. | :24:54.
year, wet winter, I should say, was 1990. It's not as stormy as it has | :24:55. | :24:59.
been, we have some sunshine every now and then. Tomorrow is a day when | :25:00. | :25:04.
we are going to get a mixture of both, some showers, it'll be breezy | :25:05. | :25:08.
and every now and then, the sunshine will shine. For the weekend, more | :25:09. | :25:16.
uncertainty and more unsettled, more persistent rain, but most of the | :25:17. | :25:21.
activity is towards the North`West of us. One line of showers, perhaps | :25:22. | :25:32.
more persistent rain, will trickle through the English Channel | :25:33. | :25:35.
overnight tomorrow and into Saturday. Then it is the next area | :25:36. | :25:42.
of low pressure, which will arrive on Sunday, although its eastward | :25:43. | :25:46.
progress will be erratic. Notice the ice bars are starting to get more | :25:47. | :25:52.
tightly packed. Gale force winds on Sunday. The breeze is blowing in a | :25:53. | :25:57.
pew showers, that will continue overnight, forming lines for a time. | :25:58. | :26:04.
But they do become more isolated and hopefully we will get some clear | :26:05. | :26:07.
spells. When that happens, we'll see temperatures tumble away. The | :26:08. | :26:12.
showers we have now have been quite lively. Once they died down, lengthy | :26:13. | :26:20.
clear spells will develop and turning quite cold overnight. | :26:21. | :26:25.
Temperatures cold enough for a touch of Frost. Most likely in sheltered | :26:26. | :26:33.
inland areas. For tomorrow, showers are always not far away, but they | :26:34. | :26:38.
will be some sunny spells in between those showers, even though they come | :26:39. | :26:42.
along every now and then, there is a chance of some dry weather for all | :26:43. | :26:49.
of us. Breezy and colder of today. `` than today. For the Isles of | :26:50. | :26:52.
Scilly: the wind direction, West or | :26:53. | :27:24.
south`westerly. Should be a fine day on Saturday, clouding over, more wet | :27:25. | :27:28.
weather, becoming increasingly windy on Sunday. | :27:29. | :27:35.
I am back in the late news at 10:25pm. Good evening. | :27:36. | :27:38. |
