Good evening. Guernsey's Colmerce and Employment Minister has defended

the island's finance industry after yet more criticism in a nathonal

magazine. Private Eye has ptblished fresh claims about the behaviour of

the Channel Islands Stock Exchange. The company was re`structurdd at the

end of last year. Previous ledia coverage of the company saw Deputy

Peter Harwood resign as Chidf Minister. Edward Sault reports. It

was following national medi` reports about his previous role as `

director of the Channel Isl`nds Stock Exchange and chairman of

Guernsey's financial servicds regulator that Peter Harwood

resigned. He said it was dud to the 'risk to the reputation' of the

office. The reason it is as I've stated, and I want to add to that.

Now the company he was a director of is facing further criticisms in the

latest edition of Private Exe. Private Eye's allegations, which the

BBC has not been able to verify include claims that CISX: "Was

riddled with at best gross incompetence and flagrant protection

of vested interests." That "current and previous directors and

executives have been indemnhfied against the legal costs of fighting

any GFSC imposed fines." "The 2 12 CISX accounts contained no lention

of the GFSC investigation, despite it being in process for months

before the accounts were signed off last year" These currently

unverified allegations are likely to cause further difficulties `t a time

when Guernsey and the islands' institutions would prefer not to be

in the media spotlight. Deptty Harwood wouldn't speak on c`mera

today but Guernsey's Ministdr for commerce and employment defdnded the

islands place as a financial instItution. I would not be being

honest if I did not say that it is unhelpful to Guernsey and it is

something that as a policy counsel and I as the minister do kedp a

close eye on. What we have to consistently demonstrate is how open

and transparent Guernsey is as a and our willingness to cooperatd with

international partners. The Channel Islands Stock Exchange is still

under investigation by Guernsey s Financial Services Commission. The

company was restructured towards the end of last year and is now called

the Channel Islands securithes exchange. They wouldn't comlent

and food shops in Guernsey `re being named and shamed. From todax, any

business that prepares food will have their new hygiene rating

eat and shop for food. A new hygiene star system is being introdtced The

best will be given five stars, and any with fewer than three stars will
